Most of the artworks weren’t removed but I managed not to see them so I wasn’t spoiled!
As usual, I wrote my review during my first listening, putting everything that came to my head and then listened it again to see if I missed something.

Review time!! (Sorry if it’s too long…)

Track 1 : Drums, man’s voice… Great opening, really fast ( I mean, there’s no intro). Love the voice, melancholic… Then comes an acoustic guitar and an electric one with a little riff. And a bass line. The song turns up to a more happy mood, it started in a sad way with this voice… Really like it ! The voice is really really good !
Pop song, really pleasant, dreamy mood… Those 2 acoustic guitarsreally fits well together… A romantic song in a way. Really like it cause it’s not too mellow, or too cliché despite the lyrics.

I especially chose this song as it is a perfect starter song if you ask me. Wouldn't see it fitting somewhere in the middle of the mixtape. And of course the artist is just great. It's Josh Rouse with Nothing gives me pleasure. His songs are usually a bit more country like and more soothing, but this is from his early work. I love the way the rythm changes without you even noticing it.

Track 2 : great drums again and an acoustic guitar. Electric one also, reminds me a Coldplay song in a way. A man’s singing. Reminds me Patrick Watson, great voice, melancholic. Lyrics are too (« I still care for you… ») Love the rhythm which switches. The transition is really well done ! We move from a dreamy song to another one in the same mood which is slower. It moves me less than the previous one though. But I really enjoy it. And the strumming pattern of the guitar is awesome, powerful but simple, so as the drums. It really fits well !

This is one of my favourite songs of all time. Not because the lyrics themselves are so great but I aboslutely adore the atmosphere in it. I can see myself sitting there dirinking a glass of red wine listening to this music getting totally desperate and despressed. No worries though : it hasn't happend (yet) . And the voice tops it off for me. Saw Ray Lamontagne live once and when he started playing this song, something came over me that is indiscribeable.

Track 3 : Great beginning, folk guitars with reverb… Love guitars, so great there are that much in this mixtape. Here comes the voice. Or should I say the voices ! Sounds like choirs, with several voices singing at the same time, women and men… Really moving… The strumming pattern is really good again, there’s no drums, no bass line, so the guitar have the power, it leads the song… Like the electric guitar I think, with this little effect coming sometimes. Yeah, the voices are really awesome ! Oh and here comes a banjo I think, it’s great, it gives this lil bit dark song some light… But keeps it moving, it’s like it brought some hope… Really disturbing track, in a good way ! Really like it ! Here comes the banjo again at the end…

Ha! Here you didn't recognize him! It's Bon Iver. My favourite band, but not really my favourite song by them, but I knew a lot of people here knew them and I wanted to include the song least likely to be recognised and it is of course just a great song.


Track 4 : Piano beginning, electric guitar too with this little riff and effect. And the drums… Wow, disturbing ! That was slow but the drums took the song to a faster rhythm. And the piano follows, increases its rhythm. And the voice’s coming, woman, really brutaly, didn’t expect that ! That’s great, the drums keep on increasing, leading the track. I really love the switches of the rhythm, that’s brilliant ! I’m not a big fan of these kind of voices but I admit that it fits perfectly with this kind of songs, pop-rock. The transition was again really clever, it’s like this song wanted to prepare us to the takeoff of the mixtape cause it starts slowly, like the other ones, but then the rhythm increases. Wow, love that bridge, with the drums and piano in foreground and the guitar on background… And the voice coming again ! A powerful track I’d say ! It grabs you til the end ! I think it’s cause of the association of the voice and this rhythm that keeps on changing, really brilliant !

I totally agree with what you're saying about the voice and such but the music is just perfect for it. It's a quite unknown band but really worth checking out. This has to be my favourite song by them though. It's like you said: it grabs you till the end. And again I like the sudden rythm change after the intro.

Track 5 : Oh, electro beginning ! With synth and drums. Here comes the electric guitar, an electro effect backwards too. Rhythm is fast ! transition’s good again, it confirms what I thought, the previous one was the takeoff. The voice’s coming, little dark, with a little effect on the sound. Oh chorus is coming, weird, didn’t expect that. Some distortion guitar is in too. Don’t know why but there are a few chords that doesn’t fit well together in my ears. It’s kinda psychelic or mystic, don’t know. Oh, acoustic guitar’s coming. A really disturbing track. Don’t like it that much, maybe this dark, psychedlic side…

Well I know this song wouldn't be liked. Not that I think that it's a bad song, but I had to pick it because all other songs by them were 1) too long 2) too hard, which would make the song a misfit in the mix. Please don't let this song make you not like the band, they've got brilliant songs. I suggest you check out 'Lampshade', 'Jewel Drop' and 'Pursuit Of Misery'. There are many more songs to check out by this band, but if you don't like them after these, you're allowed to dislike them

Track 6 : Acoustic guitar picking beginning, sounds a lil bit latino. The other instruments come together, so as this man’s voice. Like it, reminds me Liam Gallagher in a softer way! Some violins backwards, that’s great. Love the drums, slow rhythm. A powerful song again, melancholic. Like the guitar riff at the end of the chorus. The bridge’s coming, some horn I think, really fits well with the instru ! A really cool song, quiet, great to think about your life when you need to.

Again, for me this song is about the atmosphere. Like you said : a song to think about life and such. I have the exact same feeling. Makes me somewhat philosophical when I listen to it, and it is of course a good song too with it's subtle additions and violins. Saw this band life just this weekend but they didn't play the song though

Track 7 : Folk guitar beginning, nice chords and strumming pattern ! Sounds dreamy, an electric guitar riff is coming, then a bass and drums… Really great intro ! Voice! Really like it !A soothing voice, a man. It sounds as if he doesn’t want to disturb the instruments, that’s funny ! Love the way of singing, the passion but this lil bit shyness also. That’s really moving ! Rhythm increases, but not that much, drums are taking a bigger part now ! They kinda let their place to the voice when it comes, really sweet ! An other disturbing track, in a great way ! Really like it ! The power increases, the voice becomes even more passionate, the instru becomes richer. Really clever way to put all these instrumental parts together ! This is a pretty long song. It ends kinda brutally. Really liked this one !

Aaaah. I'm very glad you liked this one as it is perhaps my all time favourite song as it represents my musical taste almost perfectly. The subtle intro, the climax, the voice, the passion. I discovered it recently but I'm so glad I did. I must say that the other songs by this band aren't really wow (except for 'The Balcony', that's a great song too), but they are worth checking out though. It's a relatively unknown band and they deserve every bit of attention.

Track 8 : Drums begin the track ! And then a man’s voice, sounds kinda retro ! But the voice is modern. Really nice mix ! A good pop rock song, all the ingredients are there, drums, guitars, bass, rock voice. Like the choirs background that are coming sometimes. The voice reminds me Noel Gallagher !
Haha like the end ! With this broken violin sounding (synth I think) ! Great pop rock song, more classical than the previous ones but really great !

This was a hard track to chose since I was doubting between 2 track and I eventually chose one which was actually a third option. So this actually isn't their best according to me. From what I've read as comments I think you'll like 'Another Radio Song' and 'For Real' by this band. Really check them out. I only like a brief selections of their songs but the ones I like, I think are brilliant.

Track 9 : acoustic guitar, starting with almost no silence with the previous one. I like the voice, pretty common though, and the bass backwards. A man’s singing. Some synth effects are backwards too, it adds to the song a mystic part. An instru part starts, lead by a synth, that gives a electro dimension to this track, really strange cause this song is almost only acoustic but it fits well ! Piano comes here. I admit I find the song a bit long, maybe cause the strumming pattern stays the same all along. An another melancholic song. Fading out at the end, as if we were falling asleep… Pleasant !

I only know one song of this artist and it was an easy pick. It's a really emotional song I think, but your comments on it are correct. It might get boring at the end. the beginning grabs you by the throat but indeed, it kind of slacks of after 2 minutes or so.

Track 10 : Starting with piano, synth effects. A man’s voice, with some« broken » thing, starts the track. Drums come ! really like the voice, I’m pretty sure I heard it before but where ??? … Or maybe cause it sounds a bit like Kings of Leon… There, the song takes off, thanks to the drums and the bass line which came. Really love the voice, especially the way he hits the high notes, always with this broken thing, it makes me melt ! Power increases, with the bridge which is well done ! The chorus is great too, melody stays in the head, I’m starting to sing along
Really loved this one !!

Cherry Ghost ! Loved their first album and they just released a second one. It is said that the second albums is better than their first so if you're planning on checking them out, maybe you should check out the second album first even though I didn't listen to it yet. Again, really glad you like it, because I'm having a hard time finding people who love it the way I do. Think I found someone now

Track 11 : Starts fastly, with drums at a high rhythm. Voice and piano come. Broken voice again, like it ! Less than the previous one though. Sounds a bit dark, as the lyrics. Seems like the guy is desperate. Oh, chorus comes and the rhythm switches, it sounds less dark. And then we’re back at the verse. Like the piano riff. But that change of rhythm and mood in the chorus kinda disturbs me…
Some violins are coming during the bridge, a great instrumental part. This bridge is good. But then comes the chorus… I don’t know why it disturbs me… That’s too bad cause I like the rest of the song although it’s a bit dark but the chorus disturbs me too much to enjoy it.

I was kind of devestated that you didn't like this one. It's my favourite song by a Belgian artist and I think the chorus is great. Makes me want to lose control for some reason. But tastes aren't arguable I guess. I'm hoping it just has to grow on you

Track12 : Drums, bass, piano. All in low notes, electric guitar riff. Transition is good cause it’s another dark track. The voice is great, man’s one. Chorus is great too, less dark, love the electric guitar strumming on background. This piano riff during the verses is dark, it gives all the dimension to this song in my opinion. Really enjoying this one. Electric guitar riff with some little bends during bridge following the piano notes sometimes is awesome ! Reminds me the previous one, with this dark side that disappears a bit during the chorus in a better well done way in my opinion. Really liked this one ! I was a bit frustrated beacause of the previous track but this one definetly erase this feeling

Another Belgian group. I knew you were going to like this as I stalked you a bit to find out your tastes and you seemed kind of jazzy to me. And this one fits that profile perfectly I think. Another great song by them is Envoi. Really popular here in Belgium and it just is a great song too. Saw them live this weekend too but I really don't like the group as human beings.

Track 13 : Piano starting, we’re leaving the dark side ! Sweet piano riff, like it ! Voice is coming, sounds retro, like it too ! A bit melancholic but not dark. Bass comes. Then drums, electric guitars, that starts brutally ! Great ! The singer becomes more passionate, less melancholic, as if he woke up to fight for what was disturbing him at first ! The chorus is great too ! Wow, after a little quiet moment, rhythm switches again to become really fast, really rock ! Didn’t expect that ! Well done ! Head is shaking and foot is tapping ! Easily imagine that during a gig, really powerful ! Ends brutally !

I have to disappoint you: you'll never see this song performed live at a gig because the band quit a couple of years ago. They only released 1 album but if you liked this song, you certainly have to check it out. The rest of their songs is a bit harder, but always with strong melodies.

Track 14 : Folk guitar is begining the track with reverb effect, some effects on the back ground. Voice is coming, sounds like Joshua Radin. Yeah now I’m sure it’s him ! Really like his voice and his work although I think it’s a bit too mellow for me if I listen an entire album. Violin is here, which makes the song even more melancholic. This song is sad, like a goodbye… Don’t listen to it if you just broke up LOL ! Good song in this genre, I like it ! Although, as I said, it’s a bit too mellow for me.

I understand what you said about the mellowness. There had to be one that corssed the 'mellowness' border. Glad that it was this song then Just lovely little song to listen to. Wanted a song by this artist and this one was the shortest, so it was an easy choise . He's got better songs though, but I think you'll find them as mellow as this one.

Track 15 : Acoustic guitar at the beginning ! Reminds me « kiss me », maybe the strumming pattern at the beginning lol ! The voice is coming, a young man I assume. The song really starts, drums, bass line, electric guitars, piano. A pop « easy listening » song, sounds pretty good to me. Can easily be heard on a tv show ! The bridge is good, like the way it’s brought. Haha yeah, I have lots of images coming from various tv shows ! Ends with a last strum on guitar, as a lot of songs of this genre do. Good one, appreciated it !

Glad you didn't find this one to mellow . One of my favourite Belgian artists and this song just never tires me. I could listen to it for hours. But I see your point on the TV show stand, but let's not forget that Coldplay music also appears in TV shows so I'm not taking this as a bad comment

Track 16 : Starts with an acoustic guitar and drums. Drums stop. An electric guitar comes. And then the drums come back. The voice is coming… OH YEAH, Bon Iver’s singer ! LOVE JUSTIN VERNON’S VOICE ! Just outstanding ! Really like this song, sounds like a great ending. Really dreamy one, not melancholic or sad, just dreamy, maybe a bit nostalgic. But really dreamy, as if you were laying on the grass, watching the sky… Don’t have anything to say anymore, love this one, tells us that the mixtape is ending… Oh and love the xylophone or something ending the track

Woot!!! Of all the people on this forum I catch someone who understands the true genius of Justin Vernon . I know I recomended you a lot of stuff and of course you should check them all out but if you plan on only checking out a few make sure you check out Justin's 2 solo albums ('Self Titled' and 'Hazelton'). You'll discover so much more of him. My appreceation for this man rose about 10000% after hearing those songs. You'll thank me for this tip, I swear!

So, I have to say a big thank you for my mixtape maker ! Most of the songs are quiet, some music I love to listen too ! What I liked was the originality of the tracks. One more time, this has pushed away the musical bounds I have, made me explore and dig some new ways to this kind of quiet music I always loved. I easily imagine myself listening it again and again, by night, to calm down or simply to think…
Another great thing is that I didn’t know any of the songs, although I recognized 2 artist. I’m really looking forward to discover more of these bands !

I'd like to thank you for putting so much effort into listening and reviewing my first ever mixtape (sorry about the cover art that was still there). It's not too long at all! I loved reading it whilst listening to my mixtape and you were right about most things. I think we have much in common about music (we also have the same day of birth btw! September 7 rules ! )

You were a though customer as I barely had something to base myself on (I stalked you a bit but I could only find your previous mixtape). But I'm really glad that you didn't totally dislike it and I really hope that's you'll listen to some to the songs from time to time, or that I made you discover at least 1 new artist/song. I'm sorry that I couldn't really give you varied music, I tried as much as I could but that mixtape just represents my musical taste and I couldn't give you what I don't have or love right?

Track 3:

This one got me hooked right from the off, mostly cos that driving guitar riff sounds a lot like
Tame Impala (altho minus the heavy TI reverb) Then the vocal comes in and it sounds like something from the 90s, kinda britpoppy. Catchy. The guitar, hmmm I love the guitars in this.
I'd be interested to learn more about this band.

Track 4:

Change of pace now, slightly more dull than previous tracks, but still quite good. The guy's vocal kind of drones a little. This has a pre-Britpop feel to it, like a Joy Division feel, that sort of era. Not a bad track, but not really great either.

Track 5:

The Kooks, yes? I have both their albums but have barely played them, so I don't know this track. Nice, short, harmless little acoustic number about the seaside. Sweet.

Track 6:

Starts mellow, but builds and adds layers as it grows. I like the changes throughout this track.
Interesting lyrics. Nice use of xylaphone. Pace picks up and another vocal pops up. Boy and girl. It's cute. "So, we will become a happy ending". Whoa sudden ending.

Track 7:

Hmmmm spoken vocal at the beginning and I'm worried it's a rap song, but then a cool guitar kicks in and it's gone all indie. Bit of an unusual one. Not bad, I kinda like it.

Track 8:

I confess I saw the artwork for this just after d/loading, but I think I'd have clocked Jack White even without the spoiler. White Stripes, no? Again, I have this album but never pay it much attention, so I don't know this song but the piano sounds almost exactely like My Doorbell, so I'm left with that song stuck in my head rather than this one ("I'm thinking about my doorbell, an' when ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it"). It's a decent enough track. I'm not a big fan of his voice tho.

Track 9:

Slight change of genre, on one hand feels like an Owl City-esque radio-friendly pop song, on the other hand it has shades of Michael Buble in places. Young sounding vocal. Nice, little pop song, I like it, but not sure I'm that bothered to hear more from this artist.

Track 10:

Style and vocal sounds familar. Is this Hot Chip?? Reminds me of that One Life Stand song. Quite dance-y but has nice piano/strings. Not sure I care much for the guy's vocal, but it's quite a good track. Not something I'd usually go for. Feels like it'd make a good workout track.

Track 11:

Another nice upbeat track. Great plinky, plonky Jools Holland style piano. Again, not sure I care much for the vocal, his voice seems a bit weak/dull compared to the upbeat music. Good track tho, not bad.

Faves: 3, 2 & 6 in that order

Overall, nice and guitar heavy; a very alternative vibe but with some acoustic and electronic-y stuff in too. Good, interesting mix. I liked it. Thank you mixtape maker, whoever you are

BTW, I saw your comment on the artwork and stuff previously! I'm so sorry about that! It wouldn't let me edit the rest of the info. My computer was all messed up (I actually bought a new one today). Received my mixtape, reviewing while I listen...with song information unfortunately. But that happened to me last time too, it's no big deal.

1) Motion City Soundtrack! I've been meaning to give them a listen. Pretty good, poppy and catchy. Good start.

2) Oooh I like the intro! Nice strings! If I didn't know better I'd say it sounds like vuvuzelas. But much more pleasant. Never heard of this band but I think I might check them out now. They have a nice warm, thick sound.

3) Also a very warm sound...haha I just don't know how to describe it. I guess I suck at writing reviews. The singer has a really good voice though.

4) Ok so I cheated a little...I couldn't open it in iTunes so I looked it up on YouTube since I had the info. But I like it! It's kind of electronic-sounding, with a catchy bass line and some "Ah, ah ahs" that cut in and out, and some synth and distorted guitar later on.

5) Opens with acoustic guitar, female singer, then some light bass and backing vocals are added. Kind of sounds like Ingrid Michaelson a bit? Very mellow, with cute, romantic lyrics: "Be mine, Valentine." Aww.

6) "When I watch you, wanna do you, right where you're standing..." Heh. This is really good though, quite upbeat. Sounds a bit like The Strokes, but punkier.

7) Another upbeat rock song. I'm sh-sh-shaking. I like it.

8) Oh hey I've heard this song! I always thought it was the Black Eyed Peas but apparently not? Sounds like them though. Very upbeat, with a sort of hip hop-reggae beat. This is a very nice contrast to everything I've heard so far.

9) Same as #4, I had to YouTube it. Meh. Very catchy though, interesting lyrics..."You are the girl I've been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl," sung by a guy? Hm. The video is really interesting too if you haven't seen it. Pretty good overall.

10) Piano ballad? Oh, John Legend. Classic. I really like the lyrics. "We can destroy hunger, we can conquer hate. Put down your arms and raise your voice, we're joining hands today." How inspirational! iTunes recommends a playlist called Election Songs, lol.

11) My sister loves The Rocket Summer so I'm somewhat familiar with him. I like what I've heard so far and this is no exception. Very upbeat. It makes me happy.

12) Moby? I think I've heard this one before. I like it. Lots of strings, delicate piano, and atmospherics with a techno beat.

Overall, awesome job! Not a single song I dislike. I'll have to check out some of these artists. Thanks so much!

I had actually made this mix beforehand, but after doing some last.fm stalking , I found that there were two or three songs that you'd already heard before. So I had to change those. I also changed a few other songs and the order a little bit, just to make it flow a little better.

This one is by an Irish band who released their first album this year. I wanted to start it with something pretty catchy, and this song was perfect. Seeing as this was one of your favorites, you should definitely check out their album, you'd probably like it.

Track 2: Toning things down a notch from the previous track we hear an acoustic guitar picking, reminiscent to Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide". There are bittersweet sounding strings. Then comes in the drums which I found to be unexpected in I thought the song was going to only be acoustic. Still it fits well and the vocals work very well with this song. I particularly like the harmonies with the vocals in this song. This song is very similar sounding to Andrew Bird not just with the strings but also with the vocals as well. The song is also unfamiliar to me as well as the artist but I like the song!

Young Bride - Midlake (The Trials of Van Occupanther)
I'm not a huge fan of Midlake, but when I first heard this song, I literally could not stop listening to it! I just love it.

Track 3: The song starts with some bells in the song. We then hear some horns and strings and the song has the feeling of an old-western Clint Eastwood movie right before two people are set to duel at high noon. The vocals sound very familiar, but I can't put my finger on who it is. What I like about the song is that is is layered very well and a lot is going on with the instrumentation and vocals. I also like how the tempo of the song changes, i'm a sucker for tempo/beat changes.

Guyamas Sonora - Beirut (The Flying Club Cup)
This is another one of my favorite songs, I just couldn't go without putting this on my mixtape. You should check out this album as well, I just think it's really great.

Track 4: From the vocals I can tell that this is a song by Bat for Lashes. Her voice is very distinct. I don't think I have heard this song before (I haven't listened to her new album). I really like how the song picks up and instruments get added in as it progresses. The mood of the song is animated with the drums giving the impression of walking but to me seems somewhat dark and the kind of song I think would be perfect for a late night drive.

Sleep Alone - Bat for Lashes (Two Suns)
I wasn't sure whether or not I should put this one in my mixtape seeing as you've listened to a lot of Bat for Lashes, but I'm glad you like it! It's definitely my favorite from Two Suns. I love the beat, and her voice sounds so beautiful

Track 5: The track starts off with guitar picking and synths. Drums come in that the bass drum reverberates in my ears. The vocals are extremely familiar, and it's on the tip of my tongue who this is. I especially love the harmonies of the "ooo's" during the chorus with a combination of and electric piano sounding instrument, beautiful yet haunting. Strings come in that are also extremely haunting. I really liked this song a lot!

Nature Springs - The Good, The Bad & The Queen (The Good, The Bad & The Queen)
This album was another of Damon Albarn's side projects, which is probably why the voice sounds so familiar to you. If you like Gorillaz, I'd definitely advise you to give this album a listen.

Track 6: A song that to me feels as though it would appear on some 1960 or 1970's sitcom initially. It has a very happy feel to it. Then some drums come in to make it feel more contemporary. The vocals sound familiar but work extremely well with the music. This is definitely a song that is perfect to listen to during the summer. It is very happy, yet counters the lyrics to the song that seems to express sorrow with the singer. The end of the song has only strings and laughter of children which really fits the mood of the song.

Maple Leaves - Jens Lekman (Oh You're So Silent Jens)
Pretty much all of his songs sound like they came straight from the 1960s/1970s. This one is probably my favorite of his that I've heard.


Track 7: The song starts with really strong drums with minimal amount of piano. The harmonies in the vocals are very nice! More instruments come in with acoustic guitar electric guitar and drums. The song builds up a little bit and more instruments are added in a keyboard or electric piano. The song to me has the feel of being in the desert or traveling on a horse or something. I really like the mood of the song and the arrangement of the song is great in that there are many things going on to listen to. [/b]

Cards & Quarters - Local Natives (Gorilla Manor)
I seriously love this band! It was hard choosing which song to pick, but I went with this one. I think it's so beautiful and I like the way it builds up. You should REALLY give their whole album a listen!

Track 8: Backwards sounding instruments start the song off with the sound of choirs. Initially this is the kind of song I imagine sigur ros writing. Then the song changes with drums added to the song and it picks up. Vocals come in and it sounds so amazing and full. The song to me has the imagery of really bright and colorful instruments. The vocals sound familiar and slightly reminiscent of james mercer of the shins. I love the fullness and openness of the song. It seems like the kind of song that just keeps going in the sense you can hear it out so far, and it's very deep in terms of distance... not sure if that makes sense. This is a really great song! One of my favorites in this mix!

Progress - Mutemath (Reset EP)
I'm really happy you like this song! It's one of my favorites, from one of my favorite bands. I think you'd like their self-titled album.

Track 9: Things calm down from the last song. An acoustic guitar is playing and vocals come in. It sounds like sufjan stevens. Not too much of a fan of sufjan's voice but I do quite like this song. I like how the song expands and is greeted with more instruments and is more full sounding. The harmonies within this song are very nice and the arrangement is really good too.

A Good Man Is Hard to Find - Sufjan Stevens (Seven Swans)
You're right, it is Sufjan. His voice does take some getting used to, but it's worth it I think. Not only is this song quite beautiful, but it's also based on a short story of the same name by Flannery O'Connor, which I think is pretty interesting.

Track 10: Song starts with an electric guitar with a wah-wah effect to it. Initially it sounds like something the flaming lips would write. But the vocals come in and it's definitely not them. The song yells out 1960's psychedelia, but still sounds contemporary. I feel I may have heard this artist before, the vocals sound very familiar like with a bunch of the songs on this mix so far, but perhaps I'm getting it confused. I really like this song! It has a very spacey feel to it, reminiscent of early pink floyd.

Solitude Is Bliss - Tame Impala (InnerSpeaker)
I needed something that was catchy and loud after all that quiet acousticness, so I went with this. I haven't really listened to Tame Impala much, but I like this song a lot, and I'm glad you did too!

Track 11: The song starts with an acoustic guitar and synths. It is very relaxed and laid-back. The vocals come in and hints of piano come in and out. The song sounds very dark in terms of mood. The drums come in and the tambourine definitely reverberates which fits very well with the song. With lyrics like "Rain down on me" "the sky above that shoots to kill", adds to the sadness/depressing feel of the song. Not as though it's a bad thing though. It's a very intense sounding song as it builds in intensity as the song progresses and gets close to the end. The vocals sound very desperate in that they are almost screaming out for help. The song is very dramatic, and the imagery I imagine is a war scene or a terrible scene that gets out of control. What a great song on many levels (arrangement, mood, intensity)

Thistle & Weeds - Mumford & Sons (Sigh No More)
Another band that I haven't given very much listen to, but I remember really liking this song and the intensity of it, so I had to put it on my mixtape.

Track 12: Song starts off more laid-back than the previous track. The vocals sound familiar. Could it possibly be M83? I do like the vocal harmonies and then how it builds with the guitar, drums and background harmonies. I really like how the song sort of explodes with guitar, drums and great harmonies. It also switches back and forth a little bit with being laid-back, and then more upbeat which is controlled by the drums.

Swimmer's Chant - Mew (No More Stories EP)
This is one of my favorite Mew songs. I love how I get this feeling of being under water whenever I listen to it.

Track 13: Song starts with violin, that sounds slightly humorous in the notes that are played. Then vocals come in as well as guitar and slightly drums. I like how the guitar and violin counteracts each other and don't seem to be synced or together, yet they work well together. It works well. I really like the chorus of the song as well as the arrangement with horns and synth. Then the song becomes more complex by adding more synths and drums. I enjoyed the song though I found the violin line a bit annoying over time

An Arrow in the Side of Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy (Has a Good Home)
What's interesting about this song is that it's basically a cover of a Mario Brothers song

Track 14: This song is very upbeat and with the drums seems like a song that would be sort of good to dance to. The vocals sound really familiar. I really love the chorus with the vocal harmonies that is so full sounding as well as the drums and arrangement underneath. The chorus is very catchy. I really like this song a lot... one of my favorites on the mix.

Look Kids - Apparatjik (We Are Here)
This is probably my favorite Apparatjik song. I wasn't sure whether I should put one of their songs on here or not, but I guess it's a good thing I did! I'm very happy that you like it

Track 15: The song starts with a synth, and a slightly strange female vocalist at first. I do get used to her voice fairly quickly though. Definitely a different sounding song with the drums and piano beat that seems like sort of like an African dance. I like the movement and pace of the song. The vocals seem at times slightly counterbalancing the drums or slightly off time, but it works extremely well with the song. I really like this song. To me it seems like it would be a great song to end an album.

Tonight - Lykke Li (Youth Novels)
I literally added this one at the last minute, haha. You might like the rest of her album, I think.

Track 16: The last track of the mix starts with an acoustic guitar and vocals on the left. These vocals sound really familiar, but I can't once again seem to put my finger on what artist this is. I like the rhythm of the guitars and then how the drums come in. A small thing I really like is how when the crash cymbal is hit it sort of sizzles. I also like the fuzziness and darkness of the bass. The song seems like there are a bunch of different parts in that instruments abruptly stop and the song continues. The chorus though is very catchy. I like how the tempo sort of changes when there's the piano vocals and tambourine, but then a drum kit comes in. With the lyrics of "I'd like to go home", and the feeling of the song with the music it seems like a good way to end the mix on.

Dirty Cartoons - Menomena (Mines)

I just discovered this band a few weeks ago, and I think they have an interesting sound. This is one of my favorite songs from their new album (which actually isn't to be released until a few weeks from now but shhhh). I thought it'd make a good closer. What's also interesting is that the first song on this mixtape has the lyric "come back home" and this one has the lyric "I'd like to go home," so it kind of links back to the beginning in a way. I honestly didn't do that intentionally though, hehe

Overall I really liked this mix a lot! Honestly there wasn't one song on the mix that I didn't like. The mix had many songs where the vocals sounded extremely familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Also I found that this mix was extremely drum heavy which I really liked a lot! The last thing that I really felt was great with the mix was that there was not one song I had heard before. So it was a treat to get to hear new music and it held my attention throughout. Also I feel that these songs will have me check out some new bands. I'd give this mix probably a 9 or 9.5/10. My favorites off hand were tracks 1, 5, 6, 8, 11, 14, 15. 1. kicks off with some delphic with some nice beats. very 80's. a nice opener to the mixtape. not a band i would normally listen to but so it was good to get some exposure to them.

3. i'm not a fan of athlete, but i know of a lot of people on here who would be. i find this song a little bit repetitive and i remember hearing it on the radio loads so i am a tad biased. they have nice little melodies an their chorus' are usually very strong so i would recommend fans of snow patrol/keane (and to a more developed sense elbow) to give them a listen.

4. next is an acoustic number centred around a layered vocal. folky but not amazingly inventive. still worth a listen though and if it's what you're into i'm sure they'll have more where that came from.

5. cold war kids quicken the pace a little. i've only heard hang me out to dry by these until now. strong track. vocals reminiscent of jack white. good musically. this song has some nice subtle touches and they work well as a band together.

6. placebo. very good song with bowie adding vocals too. another relatively slow track which fits nicely into the playlist. it's tricky to get placebo into a playlist as eclectic as this since they are different to the rest but you managed it almost seamlessly.

7. things speed up with the next track as it goes electro. edgy sound, i liked it. once again not something i would normally listen to but it was catchy and had a decent driving beat.

8. razorlight next. i'm biased again because i think johnny borrell should be kicked in the nuts but i know a lot of people on here would like them and i recommend it for fans of fratellis, kaiser chiefs, killers

9. sea wolf. not a band i have heard of before but the song itself sounded familiar. a band i will be looking into. the guitars reminded me a bit of the cure in places. very chilled out. enjoyed it.

10. next song is chilled out again with a high vocal. synthy with a faster paced chorus.

11. another slow song (not a criticism at all, i think i may have made the slowest playlist incidentally). more guitar based music and a little heavier than most of the songs before it (but not heavy in the great scheme of things at all). not the kind of music i would listen to but i know a lot of people on here who would like it.

12. the xx. keeping it chilled. another strong track. well produced music with pretty guitars. nice harmonising on the vocals too.

13. buble. someone i have heard a few songs by but don't enjoy, but once again there will be people on here who will like it, so when this becomes available for everyone to download don't let me put you off. it just isn't a genre i'm interested in.



overall a good playlist. some tracks on there i really like, a couple i really don't like (but that is because i'm stubborn. i know many people on here who will like it), and a solid middle ground. it was better than i expected since i am so hard to please and to get me interested in a few bands when you don't know me all that well (if at all) is impressive. i think there is a lot of things on here that many would want to listen to and there is something for everyone.

personally i give it a 7/10 though for a lot of others it would be an 8 or 9/10. i cannot imagine anybody giving it under 6/10 as it has something to please all and will likely contain something you have yet to hear.
