I wonder how Brian Eno let Chris Martin name songs like 'Hurts like Heaven' and 'Every teardrop is a waterfall'... Honestly they seems very umm... Pop sounding songs, not Rock.. Pop. I hope I am proved wrong on this one.

yeah those names are terrible, but saying "I wonder how Brian Eno let CM name songs bla bla bla" is like... I don't know, I don't like it. I mean I don't think Brian Eno has or should have that kind of power.

I'm pretty sure Eno has no say over anything like that actually...

I doubt Eno busies himself with the titles of Coldplay songs. While he has become essentially an unnamed member of U2 when he produces their albums, I think he's much more of a guiding presence with Coldplay. I'm a fan who likes his guiding presence, but I really doubt he's had much to do with those...those...atrocious song titles.
Someone mentioned in another thread that "Everything's Not Lost" is a particularly syrupy title and that these, comparatively, weren't that bad. However, I think there's a difference with a title like ENL where you're making a statement anyone would make and title like Hurts like Heaven or Every Teardrop is a Waterfall - dramatic similes that would never be uttered. I don't know - me hopes it was Chris pulling the persons leg. They do say they sometimes try to throw people off...

Not rock, how so?
"Hurts Like Heaven" is being used as a metaphor, I can deduce, and "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" is damn right poetic (LOL, maybe it's because I'm a woman). But we won't know the true meaning of the titles until we hear the complete lyrics. "Up With The Birds" sounds funny though. |

I like "Up With The Birds" over all of them!
![]() But I think Brian Eno controls the music, I think the guys control the titles and lyrics. |

At first I thought they sounded silly, but remember when we found out some titles for the last album? I thought Lovers in Japan sounded silly too, and look how wrong I was!
![]() I guess we can't really judge until we hear the songs. |

I think I figured it out!
![]() Ok so I think that the song titles are amazing, but not for Coldplay. I think they would be better for someone like Nelly Furtado or some other female pop artist! |

They are bloody awful titles....but I was dead against Viva La Vida as a title, last time around and it turned out to be great. That's not to say the same thing will happen this time.
The Every Drop is a Waterfall title is written on the wall though, so unfortunately I doubt it's a joke.

Quote: ![]() Yeah, I think they're just a bit much for Coldplay. I mean, I'm a guy and I love Coldplay, but these titles seem way too serious (in the wrong way) and (in regards to Up With the Birds) silly. I personally never felt any of the titles for Viva sounded dumb when I heard them. I found them intriguingly vague. I feel like the music that would accompany these songs would have to fit the titles perfectly. There's no room for Up With the Birds to be a serious piece of rock jamming. And Every Teardrop is a Waterfall would just have to be a tear jerker. I think one thing you can say about Coldplay titles, aside from Fix You and Everything's Not Lost, is that they are always detached enough from the song to sound cool by themselves - The Scientist, Viva la Vida, Clocks, Life In Technicolor, Violet Hill - they have their own auras. I mean, consider that people on Coldplaying are still hoping to hear Famous Old Painters simply on the fact that it has the name it does. But I'd be perfectly happy to eat my words if the songs turned out to be awesome.

Up With the Birds makes me think of this:
![]() i like the titles. i can see how many they could come across as "awful," but i have enough faith in Coldplay that i'm sure the songs themselves will be fine
