  1. HEAR ME OUT!!! Guys, Iโ€™ve been noticing a lot of disappointment and dissatisfaction from the snippet we got.. and while I understand where this comments come from, I think we have to give our guys the benefit of the doubt. First, weโ€™ve only heard 15 seconds from a -at least- 3 minute song, and yeah, itโ€™s pop, but pop โ‰  bad necessarily. Second, I get the felling, as it has been proven many times before, that this single is going to be the poppiest the album gets, itโ€™s a single for a reason, their most comercial sound to catch those casual listeners, and non fans. I also think this song is

  2. First off, Ive been on this forum since pre- X&Y release, but have been a lurker for the past couple album cycles and don't post much these days. But Ive followed the boys from the very beginning. So, its been a treat to say that Ive grown with them musically and in life. I always wished they'd had gone the full alternative/rock route, as their earlier stuff indicated that they would be pretty damn good at it! Look, I love Buckland's guitar, I think he's a subtle genius, and wish they would fully unleash him, i.e. One I Love(2003 Live). But Ive come to accept that they just aren't go

  3. I think we all have to consider the fact that Coldplay has changed since 2010. Those stadium-pop songs are now part of their identity because it was a choice they made a decade ago, or even with Viva la Vida. Imo, i like the fact that they made Everyday Life before because it reminds us that they still have this melancolic-soft rock vibe in their roots. They just chose to explore new horizons and I can't blame them for that. My two favorites albums are AROBTTH and Mylo Xyloto, I'm lucky to love both sides of their music ... But please if you're unhappy, remain respectful with their choic

  4. A lead (or follow-up) single is always the "pop-iest" sounding song on the record. Remember that. Think the following singles: Everyday Life: Orphans A Head Full of Dreams: AOAL/Hymn for the Weekend Ghost Stories: Magic Mylo Xyloto: ETIAW/Paradise Viva la Vida or DAOHF: Viva La Vida Don't lose hope based off 15 seconds people. I actually think the new sound is huge, in the best possible way.

  5. I think it's crazy that every album everyone says "oh no coldplay is pop", or "I hate the sound". Like I get that people can have opinions, but really the sound has been pop for a gazillion albums, and also overall their pop sound is pretty worked out what it is. I would imagine they aim for this to be Like Every Tear Drop is. Waterfall in terms of how pivotable it will be for them as a band to reveal. The clip is way to small to gage the overall feel of the track.

  7. I agree - let's not assume the quality of a song based on the first 15 seconds. Let's also not assume the quality of an album based off of 15 seconds of one of its songs! IMO Max Martin's probably just helped with one to two singles here and - since they're singles - they're bound to be the poppiest on the record. In case anyone's worried, Jon Hopkins might come back. Jacob Collier might help with some of the songs. The Dream Team, though not mentioned in the liner notes, are probably going to come back. Brian Eno might have a few says in this. I personally think the single's okay as it

  8. By the way, hi everyone! It's so good to see so many Coldplayers around and that the forums are so alive it's a great time to be around for everyone! I was mainly active on Twitter (which has gone mad after the Alien Radio FM project (who is following me on Twitter!!!!) and all the teasers came) so I literally forgot to check on the forums And of course I'm really looking forward to the release of their upcoming single on May 7 (of which most of us probably heard the 15 sec long snippet already).....

  9. I mean let's face it, in terms of poppy Coldplay I think Max Martin is light years ahead from how Stargate massacred AHFOD....

  10. You spilled the truth. I seriously don't get the hype about The Weeknd in general. Have you listened to his lyrics? It's sad that people stream and support such a misogynist artist. I mean i'm be no means music expert, but here's my comment. We can't argue, that a lot of the music these days feels generic. But the beauty of a song becoming big or relevant these days mostly lies in something else than just being an original artsy masterpiece. It's freakin TikTok era, where people have attention span of 5 seconds, so in order to make impact with a song, you need to do it in 5 seco

  12. I nominate those symbols as internet rabbit hole of the week. Someone suggested that each song on the new album may have one symbol assigned to it. The music of the spheres theory explains how the same geometrical concepts apply to both musical and cosmic harmony. Based on that, geometry could indeed be used to express or represent music. On social media there are five symbols that have been featured more prominently than the others been so far: The 3 stars, spiral, infinity, triangle and the orbit symbol. I focused on those 5 symbols for now. What Iโ€™ve found is that while they

  13. I think the beauty of working with Brian Eno is that he probably isnโ€™t a fan of Coldplay. Like, sure he likes them, but he probably isnโ€™t like drooling to listen to their stuff. So, with that mindset, he can tell them what needs to be worked on/tweaked. He isnโ€™t afraid to poke them. When you work with someone who has made millions on pop music and someone who is your biggest fan, youโ€™re not gonna get the best out of someone. JMO

  14. I think popularity alone doesn't make a song a masterpiece. Most songs that are very popular have catchy melodies, and usually they readily evoke emotions in many people. Other factors like branding and personality can help too. I don't even think that came about with social media, and it's happening in other arts too. Being artsy alone won't qualify a song as a masterpiece either. I think ultimately most people care more about how a song makes them feel than the actual composition. A true masterpiece like bohemian rhapsody will have that emotional impact and be easily palatable, and additiona

  15. I see your point, and I totally agree about how our attention span is steadily decreasing, it's something I've noticed as well. I would call a song like BL a huge commercial success, but still in no way a masterpiece just because it ticks all these boxes though. It's a matter of definition. I see no value in managing to appeal to the lowest common denominator. And to be honest i would also blame artists who cater to this lowest common denominator - they are a big part of this supply and demand chain for, let's call it, generic music. And yet a well-composed, original-sounding song with a

I feel there's possibility we're gonna receive some J-riff somewhere throughout the song, it'd suit well I think. But anyway, they know what they're doing. We want them to stay big and this catchy song will let them fill stadiums again. And since this is definitely the most poppy song on the album I'm not worried at all. Have you thought about possible collaborations on the album? There's gonna be definitely at least one

  20. I think the pre-chorus lyrics sound as they do because they are doubled by backing vocals of the For Love choir (in brackets). As for the bridge, I don't know. So yeah, overall the lyrics aren't great, but we'll have to wait see how they work within the context of the music.

  21. How's that possible.. but those pre-chorus and bridge lyrics really scares me to be honest

  22. It's not a country restriction, the link is accessible worldwide but it's unlisted, hence why you can't find it if you go to their page. They must have made it public by accident for a short period of time and some people saw it. I don't get why they don't just take the link down now though if they don't want us to hear it

  25. Btw, i really like the fact that with this snippet the direction of the song and its sound is pretty clear to predict. We know what to expect. Remember the AOAL preview? Holy Sh**, many thought it would be something rock, even similar to Violet Hill. Because of the guitar and heavy drums near the ending. The song turned out to be totally different, which was a big letdown on the very first listen. Though, i do like it a lot now. As for Higher Power, i assume we will be surprised too. But in a good way this time around.

  26. So the first 15 seconds of higher power. it sounds really good for a small section. when I remember the album A Head full of Dreams, where we heard a small excerpt from AOAL of Jonny's guitar riff everyone was very excited about that and then in tourned out to be a middle class pop song. I like that 80's style a lot. Generally you have to say Coldplay just wants to be successful with this album and cause a stir in the music industry, as they wanted with A Head full of Dreams. For me, it's not about supplying old and new players, but Coldplay always wants to have a say in the current music indu

  27. I usually agree with you. This time I'm mixed. The music is definitely generic 80s but that Will beat is growing on me and I'll take generic 80s over the sound of any other decade. I love 80s music. I actually think the lyrics are somwhat unique. Saying you're lucky to be alive at the same time as someone else isn't a sentiment often expressed in pop music. That's too deep. Usually they just say they're lucky to be with the person. I like the higher power lyric. Rather than being sappy and cliche by saying they have magic (and I hate Magic) they're almost saying the person is God-like whi

  28. Very underwhelming 15 seconds indeed. But they seem to have so much confidence that it will be a big hit that I'll give them a chance on this one.

  29. If it's not officially easily accessible, then probably there is a reason behind it. I have feeling it was a mistake and it shouldn't be available. So, please don't share links in here, especially the unofficial ripped ones.

  32. It reminds a lot to Birds, which is a favorite of mine from AHFOD. It also gives me a lot of summer vibes. I can also hear a bit of HLH at the end. If it is, it must likely have a nice instrumental bridge/part. Overall, it sounds nice Edit: The more I listen to it, the more I love it! It is just so optimistic and energetic, one of the reasons why I love Birds And MX overall. I can't wait for Friday to come!

  33. I hear Hurts Like Heaven and Birds. I'm not gonna give up on this song just yet because Hurts Like Heaven and Birds are great. I can hear the 80s influence, with some A-ha sprinkled in because we know they're A-ha fans. I just want to hear that classic Jonny Buckland guitar hook and solo... hopefully he's in there somewhere.

  34. I was fully aware we will be getting something really poppy immediately after seeing their new outfits. So im not disappointed at all. It's what could have been expected, fair enough. We are all going through really hard and strange times - thats why they defintely nailed it, after what we can judge from the snippet. It's all about about hope and looking forward to better and more shiny days. Thats what this song will deliver, for sure. As a side note: I'm pretty sure the new record will also please those who are more into the bands older stuff, with maybe 2 or 3 songs. But overall

  36. Seeing some of the industry reviews, they really expect this song to be a massive hit. I find it interesting how a band can write a song, and do all this promotion, under the assumption that the public will even like it, let alone expect it to be so huge it carries the band for months alone. I know there's so of a formula for making a pop hit, but to me it's still a huge gamble. Anyway, I really do hope this is a hit and a summer anthem. I know many fans don't like Pop Coldplay, but it's how the band stays relevant. Bring it on. My wallet is ready.

  37. So to amend my previous theory - each symbol represents a song - each sphere represents a release. They'll definitely be the artwork for the discs of the CDs and vinyls.

  39. I'm really torn on what to think about Higher Power. On the one hand I'm irrationally excited like never before for this new era. The buildup and the space and codebreaking themes and colour schemes etc are amazing, and the possibility all this could be tied in with the song being played from the ISS or something...!! On the other hand, every rational consideration tells me that musically, this won't be something I like. The MX era is my least favourite era, it's the one album and era I have least been able to connect to. And everything points to HP being a massive pop single, produc

  40. Maybe if Jay starts wearing that shirt more often, I'll start calling it The Buckland Symbol and drawing it all over everything. Or the Buck Signal maybe? Legend has it, if you shine the Bucksignal during a clear night in Camden, Jonny will show up and play any song you ask him to. Sometimes he'll even sing Don't Panic if you're lucky. But he'll only do this if you scare off the sheep that follows him around, eating his hats and selling his guitars on eBay. Then, before he leaves, he'll tell you a cool fact about space as thanks. Jon will wave goodbye before getting a running start

  41. There's no way they would go all out trying to promote a single and then disappear. They've changed the website and released that band photo from a few pages back that shows them in new outfits. They created a whole Kaotican alphabet that has something to do with the themes of this era, which looks quite a bit like the Klingon alphabet if you ask me ๐Ÿค” This is what I was thinking even before these extra symbols showed up. Every track on MX has a symbol. Ghost Stories is the same way, including the bonus tracks: Now what I'm wondering is if Higher Power is the first single

  42. If you click on it it redirects you to Coldplay YouTube page right? Don't think there is a special meaning behind it, indeed just a watermark.
    1 point
  43. I'm really sorry to burst your bubble again but I'm fairly sure there's nothing hidden in these YouTube videos. Its just the YouTube watermark that you can assign a picture to. Some videos don't have it because it can be turned off as well and that will just be a coincidence. The image/tweet from Kathryn refers to a troll I believe.
