It's no secret that Coldplay, one of the biggest bands in the world, has a lot of haters. However, in July of 2000, the band just released their debut album 'Parachutes' and had nowhere near the amount of fans they had today. In fact, Coldplaying.com was not launched until December of that year and even then, it only had a handful of members.

Parachutes received high praise from major critics and universal love from the press. In a contemporary review of the album, Michael Hubbard of musicOMH called it "an album of remarkable depth, especially when one considers the youthful ages of the band members." Coldplay had just begun a tour to accompany the album and would go on to perform in the United States, Japan, Australia and more. Self-esteem was high and it seemed nothing could bring down the spirit of the band. That was of course until Alan McGee came along!

Who is Alan McGee?

I asked myself the exact same question! Alan McGee was the former head of Creation Records, home of Oasis and many "uber-cool 90's bands". He also wrote the infamous "bedwetters" article during his time as a music blogger for The Guardian.

McGee begins with his frustration towards the current state of the music scene and goes on to express his love and hate towards certain artists. Within the first paragraph, McGee tears into Coldplay with a mere two sentences.

Coldplay could have easily passed off this comment as a cynical bid for attention, but considering McGee was a man so highly regarded in the indie world, this hit them hard. As a band who had just released their debut album and were no doubt paying a lot of attention to the press to receive feedback, this was tough. The comment was not even about the music, it was about who they were as people and it questions their “authenticity” – which, in the indie world, was the absolute measurement of worth.

Fast forward to 2002 and the world was eager to hear the second album from Coldplay, which is notorious for being extremely difficult. How was Coldplay going to live up to the standards of Parachutes while being under immense pressure? 

This feeling of pressure had worsened when Coldplay announced their Friday headline slot at Glastonbury Festival. The performance would very likely set up how the new album would be received. The intention was for the album to be out before Glastonbury. Recording ran later and later until it was obvious that wasn’t going to happen. If this show was a disaster, most discussion about the new record would be tainted by talk of their disappointing Glastonbury set.

The crowd, expecting Coldplay to kick off their set with the usual 'Don't Panic', were transfixed by the opening riff of the previously unheard 'Politik'! The set was defined by new music that had the crowd going bananas and also reworked live versions of previously recorded songs. 

The iconic set got people talking about Coldplay once again and defined the release of their second album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' which received even better reviews than that of Parachutes. Coldplay went on to tour the world to accompany the chart-topping album and released their Live DVD in 2003 to conclude the era of A Rush of Blood to the Head.

While Coldplay continued to shock the world with their ever-changing music style, Alan McGee remains particularly venomous towards the band. In 2010, McGee called for the Brit Awards to be abolished – and branded the year’s nominees “an embarrassment” to music-lovers.

It is also worth noting that Alan McGee insisted that rockers should retire at 40. Meanwhile, Chris Martin who recently turned 40, announced the band's new endeavour 'Kaleidoscope EP' which has failed to disappoint fans and critics and arguably lives up to those aforementioned "standards of Parachutes".

Chris Martin wears an impish grin, a cross between a kid just let out of school for the summer and a dog newly liberated from his kennel.

At first glance, the reason could be the french fries he’s scarfing down at an outdoor chicken eatery or perhaps his 9-year-old son Moses’s fresh flag-football team victory. But ask a few questions about Coldplay’s seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams, out Dec. 4, and the answer blossoms like a rose.

“That this is our job after 16 years of being together is simply a miracle, I’m so grateful for it and I don’t take it for granted,” says frontman and pianist Martin, 38, who recently sat down with USA TODAY along with guitarist Jonny Buckland, 38, bassist Guy Berryman, 37, and drummer Will Champion, 37.

“Sometimes we weren’t sure where we fit in (musically). But with this album, we’re embracing the fact that we don’t have to fit in anywhere,” Martin says. “We’re allowed to listen to (Beyoncé’s) Single Ladies, we’re allowed to listen to Champagne Supernova (by Oasis) or Good for You by Selena Gomez or the Pogues. It’s all OK.”

Q Magazine finalized their article by rating 'A Head Full Of Dreams' 4 stars out of 5. They praised the colour and energy of the album but were not fully convinced by some of Chris' lyrics.

Chris Martin appeared on two Australian radio stations during their Monday morning, chatting to them about a range of topics and while on the subject of Chris lending a helping hand to Ricky Gervais, Chris surprisingly revealed that Coldplay's previous history with the comedian goes back to when they were all working regular day jobs!

Yes, the man who later went on to star as David Brent in the British comedy classic, 'The Office' employed a certain Mr Champion, as a doorman (at a bar)! The other members of Coldplay (as they weren't known back then) were working as cleaners! Chris reflected upon their long journey together and likened Ricky to "a naughty cousin".

For David Brent's latest film (currently being filmed), Chris Martin was asked to help make a song "sound like Coldplay", to which the Devonshire born singer obliged. The effort from Coldplay's singer was very brief though and is thought to be "20 seconds" worth of work.

On this momentous day, Marty McFly and Doc are due to arrive in their DeLorean, where they will be greeted by a sky full of cars! Not quite though. Flying cars are a distant dream while there aren't any hoverboards in sight (comon, segways don't count!). Chris Martin's good friend and comedian, Ricky Gervais has enlisted his fellow Brit for the new David Brent film soundtrack. The film is currently in the pre-production phase and is set to be filmed at the end of the year. As part of the musical backdrop, he will record many songs which have already been heard during the cult comedy classic, 'The Office'.

claxson on the Coldplaying multimedia forums has very kindly re-uploaded a bunch of old school Coldplay concerts (Audio recordings). The list is growing larger by the day and there are some real gems in there. Some haven't been seen since the time of the concert and go as far back as 1999!

We've been listening to the old school concerts and have picked out some of the highlights, placing them on our Youtube channel. These live renditions have a different feel to them from many other performances of the same song:

29th August 1999 - Reading Festival

One of Coldplay's very first festival performances, introduced by supportive DJ, Steve Lamacq. The band weren't on stage for long with a set length of three songs but they capped it off superbly with a rocking performance of 'Spies':

18th June 2000 - Manchester University

Throughout Coldplay's successful career so far, they've never forgotten their student roots and during the Parachutes-era, they put on a fine performance indeed. The small audience were vocal, with one fan constantly requesting b-side, 'Careful Where You Stand' (didn't get his wish though!). Another fan was correct when saying 'James Bond' during a cover of 'You Only Live Twice'. It's the limestone rock version of the James Bond theme tune for 'Tomorrow Never Dies' (1997)

07th October 2002 - NIA, Birmingham, UK

Contrary to the intro, this one was uploaded by Lukestar1991 (Download link here) and deserved a mention due to the special Chris and Jonny moment. Coldplay's lead singer was in a very talkative mood on that day in Birmingham, with shout outs to his guitar tech and comparisons of himself and Jonny to different classic combinations of people. One of the duo's he referenced was Charles and Eddie. The British rock outfit then went onto briefly cover the classic hit, 'Would I Lie To You?' at the end of their special song, 'Green Eyes':

24th March 2003 - Royal Albert Hall, London, UK

A special concert for Teenage Cancer Trust and all-round wonderful performance from Coldplay. 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' was one of the special moments during the show, in which Chris makes a witty remark and an apparent reference to controversial war in Iraq at the time, with the altered lyrics: "I'm gonna buy a gun and start a meaningless war". It's a strangely forgotten concert and some fans may have been under the impression that their 2014 show was the first at Royal Albert Hall. Here's the much needed refresher:

Old School Coldplay Concert Downloads

Before Coldplay's outstanding concert at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday, their frontman attended a talk on a whole range of spiritual subjects, including yoga, karma & tranquility meditation. Chris explained how the latter influences his concentration at live concerts, while we know the singer has been practicing Yoga for a very long time.

Christa, from our moderating team was in attendance at the New York talk and she gave us a summary of what happened:

"Ok, so I am going to do this is parts, have to leave for work in 15 minutes and still computing it in my head.

There were no cameras or videos or cell phones allowed and I go by the rules so sorry no pics or vids

The lecture was part of a series run by the Rubin Museum Entitled Karma: Cause, Effect, and The Illusion of Fate and this segment had speakers Yoga teacher extraordinaire Eddie Stern, who is known by everyone in NY and in all the yoga circles in the world and then of course there was Chris Martin. We were in a theater that seated about 150 ppl and there was a stage with chairs where they sat. Chris and Eddie came on and they were so comfortable together, so charming and hysterically funny. You forget how tall Chris is. They tried to be serious for a while..... They played so well of each other. Eddie asking Chris questions about his interpretation of his meaning of Karma and Chris was like, you are the expert, am I answering this right? ha! Eddi was always saying yes! perfect!

Eddie began speaking with the history and meaning of Karma, Cause and Effect and taking responsibility for your Karma. Eddie spoke of Dogma later.

He also spoke of how there is Karma in Yoga. He asked Chris how/if he uses Yoga and meditation with concerts and Chris said he tries to calm himself before a show and center himself because with all the sound of the crowds you sometimes cannot hear yourself so you need to center yourself before and have quiet and one with yourself so you can be truly there for the audience and others. I am paraphrasing, I was writing in the dark on the back of pieces of paper i found in my handbag, forgot my notebook and I can hardly read my chicken scrawl ughhhh!

Chris did say jokingly he does yoga in his underpants with Eddie, Eddie looked at him and said, "Chris I do Yoga in my shorts"

Coldplay's GRAMMY winning track and second single from 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' has been voted as the fans favourite from said album.

The Coldplaying.com site wide poll had been running since 21st August and over 1,300 of you voted! 'The Scientist' ran 'Clocks' very close indeed, with 263 votes (20%) but the latter of Coldplay's timeless anthems secured first place, amassing 290 votes (22%).

Now, a look at how Clocks has evolved over the years, through Coldplay's live performances:

2003 - The Winning Formula

The live performance of Clocks was almost identical to the arrangement of the studio version. After all, the single was highly coveted, so why change anything? Clocks, Live in Sydney 2003 was a near perfect performance.

2006 - The Epic

As the X&Y era progressed, the live performance length of Clocks increased. Pretty much same old, until the astounding climax, where the award winning track descends into two minutes of madness. Full of pure piano bashing lunacy, and we LOVE it!

2008 - Glitz and Glamour

It wasn't a duet we were expecting but Alicia Keys teamed up with Coldplay during their Summer Sonic Japan show, in the Viva La Vida era. Such a Coldplay classic doesn't need another collaborator performing, surely? If anything though, Alicia added to it with her pianist skills. Add a hyper, sweating Chris to the equation and we're talking business!

2011 - LASERS!

The addition of the lasers for the Mylo Xyloto era, akin to those uses in the actual music video for Clocks complimented the song extraordinarily well! In the midst of all the fireworks and Xylobands, Coldplay still manage to keep the song simple and true, just like it was back in 2003. Near perfection.

2014 - Versatility

Clocks has so many strings to its bow and one of these was the sheer versatility of the song, when performed live. It had conquered stadiums worldwide but how would does it fair in a very intimate environment? Exactly the same! Clocks is a special song indeed and its cemented its place on the live setlist for 13 years. Will it continue to do so? Unless the band 'recharge it's batteries' like they've done with Politik, it won't go away anytime soon.

We've added a new site-wide poll, as we ask you, What's the best track on Coldplay's second album, 'A Rush Of Blood The Head'?. The highly rated record was unleashed on August 12th 2002, when the first copies were released in North America. LP2 hit European shelves two weeks later (as was often the case back then).

'Politik' and 'The Scientist' were the popular choices in previous polls but we haven't had one for this album in a while, so we'll really see what tracks have stood the test of time!

For every band, espicially those with a discography as large as Coldplay's, there are certain songs which fans remain critical of. 'Sheikwonder' in the Coldplaying community decided to make this a discussion and find out your 'Worst Coldplay Songs'. We've compiled the responses into a top 5 countdown.

Bear in mind, some of these songs have love/hate relationship with other fans, so they could top some fans favourite lists too.

Without further ado, here's the critical countdown (Chris, you might want to look away, now!):

#5 - Another's Arms

Described by 'a2iel' as "boring as hell except for the bridge guitar", while the very brunt 'howyousawtheworld' states: "there's a good song in there....somewhere, probably buried under the awful vocal melody and lyrics"

#4 - A Whisper

"A Whisper, always skip that song, its not good at all", 'Xylobryte7' remarks. The 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' track fell to last position within previous popularity polls on Coldplay's second album.

#3 - 'Paradise'

'Captain Crieff' finds the 'Mylo Xyloto' single to be very 'meh', while 'WeddingDom' can't stand the 'Para Para' and 'Whooohs' of the chorus!

#2 - 'A Sky Full Of Stars'

"A generic track wherein Guy, Jonny, and Will sound like an uninspired studio band", 'Lennyrott1' mentions. 'Archiderp' thinks "Avicii did a great job in EDM terms. But, it's not Coldplay. It would be better on an Avicii album. I would love to hear the Coldplay version untouched by Avicii though".

#1 - Princess Of China (Feat. Rihanna)

The band's controversial track with Rihanna is not a surprising choice, with endless criticism from fans on our messageboards, since the tune was unveiled in 2011. 'ColdplayingfromKansas' posted "The lyrics . . . they're so bad I just can't fathom how this made it onto the album. Plus Rihanna, ugh no".

Chris Martin on Piano or Guitar? It's a tough question but it's one which has been discussed within the Coldplay community. The lead singer of Coldplay has rocked out a countless number of stadiums across the world, with his guitar, during songs like 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face' and 'Charlie Brown'. He's also penned some of the band's greatest hits on the Piano, with the likes of 'Clocks' and 'Fix You'.

Based on the discussion, Piano is slightly ahead of Guitar in popularity! (Thanks to 'Spraycan Soul' for creating the topic adding up all of the responses)

While the generosity of Coldplay's lead singer has been on show lately, via his work with Global Citizen and Oxfam India, he has always being at the forefront of famous charity campaigns. Following the media spotlight on Chris Martin's trip to India last week, we've been chatting to Oxfam India, who teamed up with Coldplay's lead singer, to raise awareness on the pressing issue of global poverty. You can read the interview in full, below.

The Interview - with Oxfam India

Hi Oxfam India, thank you very much for your time to chat with

Coldplaying. We are so excited to hear about interesting stories and

insights from you about Chris Martin's last week visit.

We know that Chris has contributed at Oxfam for a long time, and he

finally visits India for the first time, perhaps? How did it feel when

he came to the country and made the contribution for Oxfam India?

Yes, Chris and Coldplay have been great supporters of Oxfam since Chris visited Haiti with us in 2002. We were so excited when we knew he was coming to visit an Oxfam project in India. We never thought he'd have time to visit our office and meet all the staff as well, it was a wonderful surprise for everyone

What was the engagement like and what kind of activities has he done

when he visited the community?

Chris was visiting an education project with our partner EFRAH. It helps the children of very poor slum dwellers to get access to education. These are mainly migrants from various parts of the country who are now living in this area as part of a resettlement colony. He met a lot of people who were living there and spent time with the children at an activity centre. They were singing and dancing for Chris and then begged him to do a song for them - he did two

We are so interested in hearing the further story he recently posted about the situation in Madanpur Khadar where Chris says, "The main source of income here is sorting through trash" on Facebook (https://goo.gl/TBdfmY)

The people who live there are the poorest of the poor with limited access to basic essential services. These are mainly migrants from various parts of the country who are now living in this area as part of a resettlement colony. They have no sanitation or water systems and most live by sorting through trash collected from across Delhi. They separate the waste into different types and sell it on for a pittance to be recycled.

According to your opinion, what do you like the most about Chris

apart from his music?

His commitment and his humour. Chris is very serious about his commitment to making the world a better place and makes time to talk properly to the people he visits. But he is not just serious, he is very funny and always making people laugh.

Will Chris have a regular visit in the future? Or does he always regularly visit to each country that has been partnering with Oxfam?

Chris and Coldplay have a very full schedule and country visits have to fit with all their other commitments. We are always happy to take him anywhere when he has the time.

What does he really care about according to your point of view? We feel that he is very inspiring to all of us not only his musical attitude but also as a human being. We think that he has got a high level of humanity.

Chris has always made it clear by his actions that, although music is obviously his focus, he cares about the world beyond and he does what he can to increase awareness of people living in poverty and to try to improve their lives

Koval Bhatia is the founder of 'A Little Anarky', a New Delhi based digital video agency. They have worked with many major brands including Ford, Nestlé and Harley Davidson among others. They are made up of a 20 plus team of "anarkists" but their founder Koval was lucky enough to be in attendance when Chris Martin performed at the Summer House Cafe. This marked the first time a member of Coldplay had played in India. We were fortunate enough to get a chance to interview Koval to get a first hand account of what happened when Chris Martin played in India for the very first time!

There are not many musicians, let alone celebrities, who do as much work for charity as the lead singer of Coldplay. Chris Martin signed up to be a curator of well renowned charity, Global Citizen earlier this year, when he made a determination of eliminating global poverty by 2030. A very big statement and since then, Chris has wasted no time in his hands-on approach. Joining forces with The Global Poverty Project, the British frontman had been touring India for the whole week, guided by famous actor, Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire). Their purpose is a good-will trip, focused on global poverty issues and meeting up with key government figures. We had no idea of the activity, until Chris shocked fans and performed in a tiny New Delhi cafe!

Social networks went absolutely wild for the spur of the moment performance. Many fans expressed their joy, especially those who were the lucky ones at the Summerhouse Cafe. There were tears too, as some fans, based in India were eager to see Chris live. And, the customary jokes:

An article on Buzzfeed, titled: '18 People Whose Faith In Life Was Shattered By Chris Martin’s Secret Delhi Gig' compiled the most interesting reactions to the impromptu gig.

The owner of the Summerhouse Cafe, where Chris performed was the most star-struck of them all. "It's been graced by god himself", says Anchit Kapil.

The chief executive of Kids Company has stepped down, after a UK government ultimatum which was proposed earlier on today, stating the withholding of £3 million, until the highly regarded Camila Batmanghelidjh stands down as the charity's chief executive. We understand that the government's ultimatum is related to financial mismanagement of public funds.

The charity has close ties to Coldplay, who have performed live shows at 'Under One Roof' a couple of times to raise profits for them. Chris & co hold the cause close to their hearts and they donate £1m annually. Despite this, Kids Company has been going through difficult times of late as their budget from the government was sliced in 2014.

We hope the change in leadership will have as little impact as possible on their daily activities of making a difference in children's lives.

The past 24 hours have been exuberant for many Coldplayers, as news broke of Chris Martin performing at a Cafe/Bar in New Delhi, India! Not only did footage of the intimate solo performance appear online but rumours of Coldplay appearing in India for the first time, were rife. It's believed that the British band could choose the Indian capital as a venue for their next tour. Here's a summary of everything we know, in a nutshell:

The surreal performance

Onto the shock performance, which left Indian fans completely bewildered in the Summerhouse Cafe. As mentioned, 'Viva La Vida', 'Fix You' & 'Paradise' were the trio of songs played inside the intimate room. Video company, 'a little anarky' filmed the 10 minute performance. First ever Coldplay concert in India?

Chris Martin announced, at the start of his surprise performance in New Delhi that it's the first time a Coldplay song has been played live in India but will he introduce the whole band to India in the near future? Coldplay's ambition to perform in unchartered territories across the world makes India a likely place for Coldplay to visit for their upcoming tour.

We received multiple sources, from the Summerhouse Cafe, which state Coldplay will perform in India, at the end of the year but there is no confirmation. We believe the NH7 festival in New Dheli is their most likely destination, should a concert materialize and the hosts of the Summerhouse Cafe 'spur of the moment' show, are the organisers of the festival. In addition, it was reported by @alittleanarky that Chris was 'scouting' for a future Coldplay show but that statement was later retracted.

We'll only know of a Coldplay concert in India for sure when the band announce future tour dates. The other country which is likely to host the British four piece is Brazil. Rumours are flying in left, right and center. The one concrete source comes from the president of the Gremio arena in Porto Algere. In an interview with the man in question, Eduardo Peña, he said they 'are in advanced negotiations with Coldplay'. Click here to view all of the current rumours.

Ahead of headlining Glastonbury for the first time on June 28th 2002, the nervous four piece, Coldplay were anticipating what was probably their most important live date in their careers. Publicly, opinions were split on the British band. Their first album, 'Parachutes' was a huge success but they had their critics, such as Alan McGee, who labelled the band as "bed-wetters". The band did not have any doubts in their ability though and so much so, they decided to perform a set with eight new songs. As if the pressure wasn't enough already!

And within a blink of an eye, Chris sat at his piano, Will behind his drum set, Jonny strummed his guitar, Guy readied his bass and all of the pressure, nerves and pre-conceptions were gone, as Coldplay delivered a fine and mighty set, as the crowd went 'bananas' for tracks off their new album, 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. There's a fine line between good and great. Their mental resolve had taken them up to greatness and it's stuck with them ever since.

During a Q&A session with Coldplaying.com, Coldplay's lead singer revealed that two music videos for hit single, 'Paradise' had been filmed then scraped! Hype Williams is believed to have been the director of at least one of those videos, before Mat Whitecross filmed the iconic video we all know and love, for the 'Mylo Xyloto' track.

'Paradise' is Coldplay's most successful music video, with almost 400 million Youtube views! The 2011 single was Chris Martin's favourite music video to film and this is why, according to the frontman:
