Oasis and Coldplay tribute bands Noasis and Coldplace have embarked in a war of words with each other ahead of this Sunday’s outdoor Jedi Festival. The two tribute acts have followed in the footsteps of their idols, by both claiming they will steal the show at Southport’s Victoria Park, writes ItsGoodToBeFree.com.

Shane Crofts aka Chris Martin said, “We don’t like to blow our own trumpet, we leave it to the crowd to decide how good we are – but we have played all over the world. We’ve played with Bob Geldof in Malta and in the Dominican Republic. Noasis are bound to say they are better but we think that we are. There is a football cage at the festival so maybe we can decide it there.”

James Cropley aka Noel Gallagher hit back saying, “They can say they will steal the show but they won’t be successful. We will blow them out of the water. We don’t know who is headlining yet but put it this way; I wouldn’t envy anyone that’s on after us.”

Liam Gallagher has spoken many times about his distaste for Coldplay and lead singer Chris Martin. In 2003 he slammed Chris for restating his anti-war views at a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit show.

He said, “When Coldplay did this gig they banged on about the war, that’s wrong. Chris Martin shouldn’t be using this cause to bang on about his own views on the war. If him and his gawky bird want to go banging on about the war they can do it at their own gigs. That lot are just a bunch of knobhead students – Chris Martin looks like a geography teacher. What’s all that with writing messages about Free Trade on his hand when he’s playing. If he wants to write things down I’ll give him a pen and a pad of paper. Bunch of students. These gigs are about kids who have got cancer, they’ve got to fight a war every day of their lives. That’s what we’re all here doing this for.”

More on this at the Coldplay forum here onwards.

Pictures of Coldplay at Superpages.com Center, Dallas, TX, USA (21st July 2009)

Pictures by teknolust1 @ Flickr

Cruise, Reynolds and Gyllenhaal: Hot for Coldplay

The stars were shining at Coldplay's Saturday-night concert at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Spotted backstage coming and going throughout the show and at the VIP afterparty were Tom Cruise, Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ginnifer Goodwin and, of course, frontman Chris Martin's wife Gwyneth Paltrow, writes E! Online.

Meanwhile, director Jon Favreau hosted the Iron Man sequel wrap party last night for about 400 people at new celeb hot spot Playhouse in Hollywood. Favreau spent most of the night playing DJ. No surprise, but "he played a ton of Michael Jackson," according to one partygoer.

The flick's cast wasn't spotted at the bash, but that's no biggie. Big wrap parties are more for the crew than the stars. And remember last week how I told you that it appears Vanessa Minnillo is getting along just fine since her split from Nick Lachey?

Well, Mr. Lachey is doing OK, too. He was seen yesterday afternoon hanging with a group of four girls and two guys at the Water Club's pool in Atlantic City.
Oasis star Noel Gallagher has spent an amazing £1m on drugs and enjoyed every minute of it, he told an Italian newspaper and the 42-year-old also labelled Chris Martin from Coldplay an 'idiot' after he claimed not to have taken drugs and slammed the rival band and U2 for using concerts as stages for 'rock politics'. [discussion]

At the peak of the Britpop era, Noel and brother Liam's hedonistic excesses were well known and their partying was legendary. Gallagher once revealed he had taken cocaine at a Downing Street reception in a toilet reserved for the Queen.

In his interview with Corriere Della Sera, he said: "I look at Chris Martin who says he has never taken drugs in his life and I think he is an idiot. "Doing drugs is the most beautiful thing about being in a rock band. "Up until 1998 I must have spent £1m on drugs then I stopped because it is bad for your health, brain, life and for people around you. But while you use them - except for heroin which kills people and which I have never tried - as you lot (Italians) would say 'Mamma Mia'."

Turning to bands who used concerts to get across a political message, Gallagher stormed: "We get on the stage and play. I have been to loads of concerts where bands don't play they just talk about politics. At a U2 or Coldplay concert there is always a message about poor people or people dying from hunger. OK, but can't we just have a nice evening? Do we always have to feel guilty?"

Gallagher - who with the rest of Oasis met Tony Blair several times at the height of their fame - also spoke of his own political views and said: "I grew up with Labour in opposition. "I heard their policies on education and minimum wages and I thought they were right. Then they got into government and wow, I got to know them. Then as time passed they became like all the others - it was like when you find out Father Christmas doesn't exist. I don't vote any more - anyway it doesn't matter as nothing will change."

Oasis are due to play three concerts at Wembley Stadium this week and will end their current tour in Milan on August 30.

Coldplay at Rock Werchter Festival, Belgium (3rd July 2009):

Pictures by purefm @ Flickr

Chris Martin rules out solo career unless...

Chris Martin has ruled out launching a solo career. He insisted that he is committed to remaining in Coldplay and would only release a solo record under exceptional circumstances. "It would probably mean I've been dumped by my wife and I desperately need the money," he told The Sun.

"Hell would not only have to freeze over but be skated over and completely closed up. The Pope would have to declare it didn't even exist. I cannot think of anything worse."

Martin confirmed that he has already started working on the group's fifth studio album, but has found time to enjoy himself too. "The main thing I do on tour is write, then go watch The Wire," he said. "Maybe it's because I'm about to turn 33, but I just feel hungry to write all the time. I think the next album will be quite stripped down and based upon a story idea."

Coldplay were recently reported to be experimenting with a jazz and rave sound for their next record. Meanwhile, Lionel Richie says Coldplay are the act he would most like to collaborate with. The 'Dancing on the Ceiling' hitmaker says he is a massive fan of Chris Martin's band and they are top of his collaboration wish-list. He said: "I love Coldplay. Those are the guys I would most like to do something with."

Coldplay at the New Orleans Arena, New Orleans, LA (10 June 2009):

Pictures from the Times-Picayune

Coldplay most powerful Brits in Forbes 'Most Powerful Celebrity' List

They arrived on the list this year with a debut at the 15th spot, following a sold-out world tour and a smash hit album Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends.

The top ranking is based on income over the past 12 months as well as web references, press clippings, broadcast mentions and major magazine covers devoted to the celebrity, Forbes said.

Superstar actress and humanitarian advocate Angelina Jolie has unseated talkshow diva Oprah Winfrey as the world's most powerful celebrity. Oscar winner Jolie, 33, one half of the Hollywood golden couple dubbed Brangelina with Brad Pitt, earned $US27 million ($32.89 million) between June 2008 and June 2009. Her earnings and "famous face," Forbes said, were enough to dethrone media maven Winfrey, who earned $US275 million. Jolie, who came in third last year, is known for balancing her movie career and work as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency with her ever-growing six-child family with Pitt.

More discussion on Coldplay's inclusion is at the Coldplay forum here onwards [thanks mimixxx]

Chris Martin's virginity 'inspires' Kleerup

I could never listen to Travis or U2 but I heard a story that Chris Martin was always a really shy boy and didn't have sex until he was 21 or something.
Here is Oasis singer Liam Gallagher as you have never heard him before, digging out his soul and discussing fashion, Coldplay, Susan Boyle and the joys of Twitter in a startling face-to-face interview with CityLife journalist David Sue. Here's what he had to say about Coldplay in an interview with MEN CityLife, and in particular, their dress sense:

"These days, all the geezers in bands wanna look like women. Like, why's everyone in bands wearing braces? If you're gonna wear braces, try buying a pair of jeans that fit. The worst dressed band have got to be Coldplay. What are those uniforms about? My kids have got play outfits that are better than Coldplay's. I mean, if you're gonna win a Grammy Award, don't turn up looking like binmen! Disgraceful. Make a bit of effort, I say."

To illustrate this point, Liam has turned up for today's meeting looking like a walking billboard for his Pretty Green label; dressed head-to-toe in rakish mod attire (green parka, floral neckerchief, Sta-Prest trousers and blue desert boots) which he himself had a hand in designing.

"For me, music and fashion have always come together," insists Liam. "It was the Roses and the Mondays that first brought those things together for me. Before they came along, bands all looked like sweaty rockers, like Guns N' Roses, it was all very gloomy. But then The Stone Roses came along and brought this big splash of colour. It was the music and the fashion, it came as a package.

"With Pretty Green, it's all about my personal tastes. I'm not trying to make a massive statement about men's fashion and I'm definitely not gonna appear on TV with Gok Wan. I know Gok Wan pretty well, he's alright. I know him through the missus. But I won't be appearing on his show. Or Lorraine Kelly's. No chance."

More on this at the Coldplay forum here onwards.

Rolling Stone reports back from the legendary 'Guystock'

We rolled with Coldplay to Teterboro Airport in Jersey, hopped on the band's (modest) private plane, sucked down a few Becks', and rolled over to the Comcast amphitheater to watch Coldplay's gig.

We've seen the band play about a dozen times over the years (mostly while we were doing a Coldplay cover story a few years back), but the quartet were truly incredible in Connecticut. We've never seen a band engage the crowd like they did. They were running around the whole venue, playing a few songs towards the back of the shell, and racing up to the lawn to give a special treat for those in the cheap seats.

(Thanks to Vicki and Franksy for hookin' it all up!)

Guy Berryman at Cruzan Amphitheatre, West Palm Beach:

Pictures: SPIN

More photos from Coldplay's show in Camden, NJ (26th May 2009)

Pictures by jared polin

Brian Eno launches new Sydney music festival

Brian Eno's claims to fame include musician, producer and artist. Now he is hoping his latest work -- an art installation on the Sydney Opera House -- will encourage artists to tackle global warming, reports Reuters today.

Eno, who describes himself as a "non-musician," is curating Luminous, a new annual festival of music, art installations and talks organized by the Opera House as part of Sydney's music and light festival, Vivid.

As well as playing with other musicians in a series of three concerts, the former Roxy Music keyboard and synthesizer player has designed a lighting display to project onto the sails of the Opera House every evening during the May 26-June 14 festival. Eno said he hoped the events at Luminous, which include a discussion with environmental legal group Client Earth, would encourage artists to make people think about climate change.

"Artists have become so lazy in articulating their corner," Eno told Reuters in an interview at the Sydney Opera House. "But artists can create a sense of what is cool and what is not, what is acceptable, exciting, timely... I would like to see a future where artists think that they have a right to contemplate things like global warming."

Eno, 61, has become renowned for putting forward his views on issues ranging from war to the climate and for experimenting with both art and music. Over the years he has worked on albums with U2, David Bowie, David Byrne, Talking Heads and Coldplay. His eclectic and frequently ambient electronic music has appeared in films such as "Trainspotting," "Velvet Goldmine" and "Heat."

But he also likes to come up with new words to describe cultural patterns, acknowledging that at breakfast he invented a new word -- ontin, meaning the ostensible usage of something -- which he has already used a few times to much bewilderment.

Eno said he coined the term "ambient music" to describe a genre of low-volume music that modified people's perception of the surrounding environment and that had yet to be classified. "Sometimes you recognize that there is a category of human experience that has not been identified but everyone knows about it," said Eno. "That is when I find a term to describe it."

While his musical career has made him a celebrity, Eno studied art and has always pursued artistic ventures.

On show in Sydney is his work, "77 million paintings," which involved cutting up 300 of his hand-drawn images and projecting them in a gallery. The work has already been seen in Venice, Milan, Tokyo, London and San Francisco.

Eno said he wanted his art to make people stop and think. "I try to make things seductive and inviting enough for people to want to surrender themselves to them ... and stop being yourself for a little while."

Gwyneth Paltrow Picks Coldplay For Party Playlist

The A-list actress thought she had located a haven for her family and burst into tears when told that the furry vermin had taken up squatters rights there.

Eek, we'd have run for the Hollywood Hills. Typical of soft-hearted Gwyneth, 36, when she called in pest control she insisted that any rats were gently removed from the property and not harmed in any way. Ahh! She thought she had found the ideal home, until one of her advisers saw the rodents in the garden of the empty property.

A friend of the star tells the Mirror: "Gwyneth wanted everything to be perfect. She was so excited about moving to LA with the family and to be closer to her actress mum, Blythe Danner. It will be the first time in ages that she, Chris and the children will be living together as a family. "But her stomach turned at the thought of rats running around. She didn't want her homecoming ruined by those horrible creatures. She wanted to cancel the contract, but Chris calmed her down. Instead they searched for an expensive rat catcher - not just any old rat catcher. Being an animal lover, Gwyneth didn't want the vermin harmed, just removed."

The treatment worked and last week Chris and Gwyneth put the finishing touches to their summer retreat. The workers also loaded a guitar case, emblazoned with Chris's band name Coldplay, into a waiting lorry.

Gwyneth, 36, is going to spend the next few months in Los Angeles filming Iron Man 2.
Scots scientists have revealed that facial barcodes allow us to recognise celebrities like Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Human faces contain "barcodes" that help us recognise each other, Scots scientists have revealed via STV.

Experts at the University of Stirling claim that facial features - including eyes, lips and eyebrows - can be organised into black and white horizontal lines. The resulting codes operate much like the barcodes found on supermarket items, allowing people to recognise one another.

The scientists carried out the study by manipulating famous faces such as Chris Martin, actor Marlon Brando and Hollywood star George Clooney. They discovered that all the necessary information for identification is contained in the lines of the eyebrows, eyes and lips.

Professor Roger Watt, of Stirling University, and Dr Steven Dakin, of University College London, analysed a variety of natural images - such as flowers and landscapes - and found that faces are unique in conveying their useful information in horizontal lines. In one experiment the researchers turned the facial features of Godfather actor Marlon Brando into a barcode. They found that when his face is squashed or stretched, viewed from an angle or cast in shadows, Brando is still easily recognisable because the barcode representation remains relatively unchanged.

The researchers believe their discovery could improve face-recognition software and contribute to advanced CCTV cameras. The study may also help explain the human ability to see faces where they do not exist - for example in clouds or in flames.

Dr Dakin explained: "Exposed skin on our forehead and cheeks tends to be shiny whilst our eyebrows and lips and the shadows cast in the eye sockets and under the nose tend to be darker. The resulting horizontal stripes of information are reminiscent of a supermarket barcode. To improve face recognition software, we need to look towards biology and see how we have solved the problem.”

Coldplay and Brian Eno to record in zero gravity...
