Dancing granny Dorian Cowen has become a YouTube sensation after entertaining thousands of fans at Coldplay’s Ricoh concert on 29th May, writes the Coventry Telegraph this week. The 81-year-old, who has worked as a waitress at the Ricoh Arena since it opened, caught the attention of the 40,000 crowd as she danced in the stands during the support acts. Pictures of Dorian, who says she has dancing in her bones, made it on to the big screen at the Ricoh concert. She attracted bigger cheers from the crowds than support act Robyn. A video of Dorian strutting her stuff was later posted on Youtube and had more than 2,500 hits in just a few days. Hundreds of people were talking about her on Twitter on the night of last week’s concert.

The grandmother-of-seven, of Glentworth Avenue, Whitmore Park, Coventry, said: "I loved every minute of it. I never have a break and we usually keep going but that day all the girls in my box were out dancing so I joined them and danced in between working. Everyone kept turning round to me so I started waving and everyone waved back. The whole crowd was waving so I started blowing them kisses. It was fantastic. I’m surprised so many people are even watching the video on Youtube. I don’t understand it. The clip doesn’t even show my good dancing. I had better moves than that."

The video for Princess Of China has been out now for 48 hours and it's time to find out what Coldplayers thought of it. So far we've received over 400 votes to our latest 0-10 sliding scale poll with some interesting results. If you haven't yet voted and commented, you can do so now at the PoC sub-forum. I loved it, it was visually stunning, Rihanna was brilliant with her gestures, and her ribbons /scarves. Chris was great too. It was more of a stream of consciousness experience, no plot necessary. I think the video fits the song, and makes it better. POC is not one of my favorite songs on MX but this video made me appreciate the song more, so it did it's job. I think it was brilliant. Now I watched the video three times as I think it does require multiple viewings. I think Coldplay has struck a difficult balance here between a simple indie video and a pop special effects video, which mirrors perfectly the collaboration between Rhianna and Coldplay. I love how the video describes the song perfectly. The scenes where they are both dressed differently and each stays with their clan, facing each other in battle and then the incredibly intimate scene forehead-to-forehead, opening their heart to each other and admitting how much they hurt. The video works great with these contrasts and in the end you can almost feel the glimmer of hope, of a future reconciliation, which is the spirit of the last part of MX. All in all, well done! if they wanted to make it like a really cheesy old chinese kung-fu film, it wouldn't been amazing. they could've had effects like the Knights of Cydonia video and had out of sync dialogue and singing. This video is just appalling. I would be a way better video director than the shit Coldplay hire. the first 30 seconds or so is just chris walking. for fuck sake, the next single's video better be above average [thanks kiwiboy527]

Uhm, I like it! Better than expected. It's definitely different and kind of dark, which is good. I like the effects looking purposely fake. (Someone mentioned Kill Bill - you can't compare the two but I get where they're comping from.) The ass flash isn't necessary but I don't mind it, it's Rihanna being Rihanna. Her and Chris both look great and have pretty good chemistry on screen. It's creative and fits the song well without being too predictable. (Edit: I must admit I had extremely low expectations, so 'better than expected' doesn't mean that much.) The song still sucks though.... Before more negativity kicks in in this thread: Watched it again and I still like it. Maybe it's because I couldn't give a shit. I know they're great as a band and that's what I love them for, their videos are not going to change that. I gave up getting angry with them for being 'commercial' about a year ago. At first, I thought the vid was ok. But after an afternoon of thought, I hate it. This is worse than the CB vid. It was TERRIBLE!!! Rihanna is a pompous bitch, and I feel sad for her because when she first got famous she was really sweet and innocent, but then her management figured out she'd get more PR acting like a stripper, which now has led to drugs and alcohol abuse. Some people are complaining about a lack of story... but isn't the video meant to be like a fake trailer for an imaginary film, like the trailers in Grindhouse? :L Probably won't change people's opinion, but I think part of the idea is that it's less of a story and more a series of random shots representing a wider, untold story. Sorta like the visuals in Plastic Beach by Gorillaz. Sky-pirates, giant plastic island, masked demon thing, etc. and no story. It's part of the wacky, colourful aspect of the era. I thought the video was alright. I mean, nothing really happens! there's no "story" at all, just some concept shots. Whoever talked Chris into doing this...hats off. i think the tabloids will have a field day with this though. Chris BARELY touches her...if it was any other collaborator there would be a lot more action. EVEN if the song's name is PRINCESS OF FUCKING CHINA it doesn't mean they HAVE to make a video about CHINA, because a music video DOES NOT have to do anything with the music... meh disappointed AGAIN! no real story behind it and with that behind the scenes video i was expecting it to be much more spectacular. its not even japanese OR chinese. they're just swinging around swords in the air (which by the way looks terribly done) and a lot more random things! a random music video for a very very random song. i'll pretend this PoC just never happened! one thing i will admit; its at least better than charlie brown. don't even get me started on that!! ETIAW by far the best mv of this era. you know what i hate?! when some people are so blinded by their love for the band that even if they came out one day murdering puppies you would justify it somehow. (they havent done anything that terrible here im just sayin). you cant compare PoC to their previous work because it has the name of a COUNTRY in the bloody title. its like naming a bond movie 007: Romania and then creating something about Poland!! raised eyebrows are inevitable. plus they've "tried" to go for an asian look anyway but got everything mixed up. so it does matter you see [thanks nvdmm]

Please bring Matt Whitecross here. He manages to realize all crazy Chris's ideas (but genious too!) and to make something as sweet and unpretentious as Paradise video. This video probably wouldn't have gone past Mr. Champion's seal of disapprovement. But when there's "the star", it's not for boys to decide. Anyways, gave it 5. Not a disaster by any means. It's ok. I mean, watch any Britney video and then turn on this. See the difference? But still: 1. Strange imagery - Japanese more than Chinese. Why doing that? I'm sure there will be plenty of stupid jokes on the Internet - "They even don't know the difference". I believe the boys do know the difference. So why mixing it all up? Strange decision. 2. Some long and quite boring shots. Seems that lack of story resulted in catching myself once or twice on thinking that they'd better do something else now. 3. Green screen. Well, had they done this all on location - how wonderful it would have looked. Computer graphics is not something to make you awe in year 2012. It's not necessarily bad, but not quite interesting. I'll start with the good things: there are some really beautiful visuals on the video, like the Rihanna with lots of arms and Chris walking on the desert. Now the rest: I was waiting for a plot the whole video, but nothing showed up! And some shots are quite cheassy (that blue moon scene is horrible). The boys should be there, it's not Chris Martin and Rihanna, it's COLDPLAY! And the most important is, it doesn't fit the song and the album, it's just completely out of place. I'm one of the few here that like the CB video, because it fits with it just right, POC just throws a lot of asian themes into pointless shoots of Chris and Rihanna "interacting". ok good things: Some awesome shots of Chris and cool scenery. the song is much better when put to some imagery, it distracts from the fact that the lyrics suck; Bad things: complete lack of plot. It could have been much much better if it had a cool story line. That's why Paradise and Strawberry swing worked so well- they had awesome imagery coupled with a good story. This video has cool shots, but they're so static- it's like the difference between seeing a beautiful animal (like say a snow leopard) stuffed and seeing it alive and moving. Without a good story, the video is nice to look at, but it doesn't do much else. All in all, it was alright (I think we can all agree it could've been much worse) but it's nothing special. I actually love this video. I love that cheesy samuri stuff so I love the purposely throw back styled effects. The desert and sets are really cool. While I don't care for Rihanna, I thought she played here part well and had some pretty good shots. Chris is totally cool in this video (Unshaven Chris always is). Embarrassing... You could tell they meant well, but everything about this video is extremely sloppy. Why did they even hire this good-for-nothing director. Chris he was so sexy. Great. That's what I care about actually. Riri she also did well. But I want to say... I'm glad that they didn't film kissing scene or something. This is enough fabulous. There's a little problem to me. The producer should use Chinese words for all the same/correct. Or this is just makes me unhappy and think they are not clever. There's so much different between Mandarin (Traditional Chinese) and simplified Chinese. People in Taiwan and HK use Mandarin. People in China and most foreigners use and learn simplified Chinese. A lot of words for simplified Chines, they simplified too much. They can't almost be recognized. A Chinese character can be recognized when you look it at first time. It is like when you see re- or dis- , you can probably know what it means. But they just cut them off. Mr. Mao's policy is shit. (Sorry if it offends you.) So, coldplayers you can watch the PoC again, and you will find they use two languages together. That's not RIGHT. They can't take care both of side at the same time. Every time the similar things happen, they will be the fight at the end due to the different culture. Many countries do business with China, yeah they can choose not to see this. I rated it a 9/10; I was really nervous about this video coming out , I gave the Charlie Brown video a 5/10 so I was hoping the POC video wouldn't be worse. I thought it was a creative video, I love the parts where Chris sings, I'm happy Rihanna is dressed ( hate the nails though). I actually liked the forehead touching scenes but I'm happy they didn't kiss. Strawberry Swing and LITii are still my all time fave Coldplay videos, POC video won't go in my worst category though, In my opinion the CB video is their worst. I don't get why some people think POC video is not creative, effort was put into it; there are costumes / acting. I feel like most if the ideas came from Chris and not Rihanna or maybe the director (but definitely not Rihanna or there would be less clothing). Anyway it's always good to try out new stuff, Coldplay is not afraid to test out new stuff or at least experiment, the next album may be different altogether. [thanks Rainystrawberry]

4/10. I think I'm seeing more humour in this video than was intended - the Chris parts are very entertaining. I do like the visual quality of this video, although I could have done without Rihanna's red plastic thigh high boots, but I suppose it could have been worse... I will give it an 8. there was some really cool editing in the beginning, but some of the shots toward the end lasted too long. i'm not sure i understood exactly what the story was supposed to be... and i was expecting more sword fighting. it was like, Rihanna, you have a sword, use it! but she kinda looked bored the whole time anyway... on the other hand, the cinematography was very nice. and i love that they keep including credits in their videos. 1/4 of the video seems to be about Rihanna's butt accented by her PVC thigh highs; 1/4 'this scenery looks oriental themed, let's put it in'; 1/4 the most cheesy imagery ever (which is saying something considering I measured it up against the usual cheese-factor of Coldplay videos); 1/4 Chris being moody and brooding = One rather badly executed video. This really seemed like a more cinematic thing than a plot-driven video (ie moreso 'look! pretty pictures!'). Some scenes look cool but some scenes just look laughable with how ridiculously cliché they are. I'm not sure that was exactly the point with all the dark and edgy vibes I got from it either. I agree with a previous poster that the video actually seemed to decline the more it went on... I seriously did crack up with laughter once Chris and Rihanna began flying through the air, I mean really?! 3.5/10 because I am feeling gracious by awarding props for some of the better shots and the fact that I thought this was better than CB. Am I the only one who actually kinda liked it? I had SUPER low expectations for this video... I was scared it might be some slutty Rhianna shit video... I was honestly pleasantly surprised. I thought it was kinda cool...neat and interesting. I really don't like the song all that much but this video actually made me kinda like it some more. Also, I hated the CB video. I think we coldplay fans are spoiled as far as videos are concerned coldplay usually puts out really surprisingly good videos, most other bands put out really random shit. I dig. [thanks grim99]

Firstly to say I've been skeptical of the new poppy direction of the music videos this album (I'm not a big fan of Paradise at all and Charlie Brown was a bit meh in the end), but I really actually quite like this! Considering how bad I thought it was going to be..I actually thought it came out quite classy. There's some really great imagery in there and I like the credits at start and end, which I think fit better in the video than the Paradise and CB credits too. Plus I'm surprised more of the fangirls haven't been going crazy about how good Chris looks in this video! Prime contender for next James Bond I say! It's a fair point that the video lacks a plot, and doesn't really develop much as you reach the end, but I agree this is like a film trailer, and I like the fact it's based on the film House of Flying Daggers. I'm much happier that these recent videos don't just show the band singing and doing their thing, but that they actually have a deeper meaning to what the album means. The last 3 videos we've had (Paradise, Charlie Brown and now this) all show the 'story' of the album. Who cares if they're putting samurais and geishas in the video of a song with China in it. They're just having fun and so should we, I'm pretty sure they know which geographical region those come from. Looking forward to the next single/video release, whenever that may be. In my opinion, this is a meaningful video because of how during the fighting parts they show why they broke up and convey the meaning of 'all we ever seem to do is fight', to the desert parts of how much they still like each other and how the album ends. The plot was not well defined and it ended up being sort of random which is perfectly okay in a music video but it seemed here like they were trying for a plot but didn't quite get it. I couldn't put it off any longer and I watched... and to be honest, I hated it so much that I could barely finish it. Which is weird because I AM on the MX bandwagon and I like the actual song. but the whole video was so far from what I imagine Coldplay to be that I just HATED it. a lot. At the end of the day I think it was obvious that this video would be a typical Rihanna pop video style so i'm not that bothered, it goes with the song and that's the only good thing i can say about it really. Honestly i didn't like it ... I still like their old songs and videos . Violet hill was so simple and beautiful ... this one has so many electronic stuff and is forgetable i think if Chris martin Likes to make Coldplay a mainstream band and look like maroon 5 , they are just gettin worse and worse ... I don't know if its just because I'm a bigger fan than ever and on this message board more frequently, but their videos for this album are cheesy. I get scared when I'm about to watch, I do get a bit embarrassed for them...in live performances as well (not concerts). PoC video is better than CB; anything is better than CB like others have said. I am not liking Matt Whitecross anymore. I don't like the cuts and the final product is seems rushed and unfinished. I have really loved all their videos; they always seemed more comfortable. In the more recent videos, Chris has this strange look of being uncomfortable and unnatural and its freaks me out. I don't know why they include those shots. In PoC, he is SUPER hot despite a few of those odd shots. I have to say PoC is an improvement and kinda cool to watch visually. Nothing will ever be as good at The Scientist. I actually didn't care so much about the video because i don't even like the song because rihanna is in it ,but i have to say the video is really bad and i really hate when bands don't include all of their members in their videos. Anyway the video is so pop and it's not something that i thought coldplay could ever do, i'm really kind of dissapointed about this era but i still love coldplay and hope they don't turn onto something like maroon 5 or whatever. i don't even know if it's better than charlie brown but i think both are the worst videos they've ever made. my favourite video will always be talk. UPDATED! Despite the official release being brought forward to the early hours of Sunday (most likely as a result of the leak), it wasn't difficult to find a low-fi version of the video via a Google news search, the source being a Chinese website who leaked the video during Saturday 2nd June. The following websites have all reviewed the video based on the dodgy copy, before it was officially released. We'll see if we can find some reviews subsequent to the video's official release, but if you have seen it let us know at the PoC sub-forum now what you thought of it and don't forget to vote in the usual way on our latest 0-10 sliding scale poll!

Since hearing the song back in October we’ve had promo pics and tour editions of the video, and after waiting what seems like a lifetime, Coldplay have finally delivered the full video for their collaboration with Rihanna, “Princess of China.” Taking the China theme and running with it, we see full Geisha attire as well as martial arts battles between Rihanna and Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin.

The epic video sees Martin storming up to a building, seemingly on a mission to find Rihanna, battling people on the way. Rihanna’s there waiting upon his arrival, giving her Geisha attire an S&M twist with PVC thigh high boots. The video shows the pair flying through the air with swords and fighting in the desert, as well as getting up close and personal...

MTV writes: Coldplay and Rihanna have been teasing their "Princess of China" video for a while now. On Saturday (June 2), the clip leaked ahead of its scheduled Monday release date. The trippy video is full of surreal images that play on the song's references to Asia, with Chris Martin and Rihanna donning all sorts of ninja and ninja-goddess couture. A desert, the sky and some ancient-looking Chinese palaces all serve as backgrounds. Martin and Rih Rih also do some sword-wielding and ninja kicks, for good measure.

In more emotional parts of the clip, Rihanna and Martin, playing star-crossed lovers, kneel in the desert, forehead to forehead, as they mourn the loss of their love. But the moving image soon turns violent as they float through the air and partake in a ninja battle. Much like the characters in the song, the onscreen characters are torn up about their dying love. And while the love story is at the center of the clip, Rihanna's look is also a standout as she appears in several forms: multi-armed goddess, heartbroken geisha and fierce warrior princess.

The official June 4 release date had been pushed back from May before leaking to the Net on Saturday, the same day Rihanna dropped some behind-the-scenes photos on Facebook. In the images, her hair is done up in a geisha bun and she wears long, fringe earrings. They're similar to shots she released back in March from the video shoot. "Her bit on our record is my favorite bit," the Coldplay frontman told MTV News last fall about Rihanna's feature on Mylo Xyloto. "When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we've been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music."

The clip is designed to look like a classic Asian martial arts film and features all the elements of one: a trip through the desert, a forbidden romance, sword fighting and gravity-defying combat. We get to see the full spectrum of Rihanna’s bizarrely beautiful costumes that were first got a glimpse of in the video’s stills, behind-the-scenes footage and tour promo clip for the song. From her heavily sculpted hairstyles to her talon-like nails (and multiple moving arms), it’s a truly stunning visual, whether RiRi is lounging on a silk chaise in PVC pants or sailing through the sky in flowing white robes and sandals.

Though the plot is a bit tricky to follow, the gist of it is this: Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Rihanna love one another … and also try to kill one another (this seems to be a common theme for the Bajan beauty, though this is far more artistic and romantic than anything she’s done with ex Chris Brown). Previous Coldplay.com announcement: We're pleased to report that Absolute Radio will be broadcasting Coldplay's Emirates Stadium show on Friday June 1st completely live. Absolute Radio will take you there as Geoff Lloyd packs up his headphones and heads backstage at the Emirates for this not-to-be-missed one-off Coldplay Hometime Show Special. Geoff’s been given exclusive access to the band and will be chatting to them just moments before they step on stage before Absolute Radio broadcast Coldplay’s entire set live and uninterrupted.

Geoff will also be giving away tickets for this sold-out gig in his Hometime Show in the days leading up to the concert. Geoff Lloyd’s backstage Coldplay Hometime Special will be broadcast live on Absolute Radio from 5pm on Friday June 1st. Coldplay’s set – completely live and interrupted from the Emirates Stadium will follow at 9pm. Rihanna On Chris Martin: "He's One Of The Best People I've Ever Met"; Ricky Gervais on Coldplay: "You have to applaud the band's attitude"

Rihanna has spoken exclusively to Capital FM about working with Coldplay on 'Princess Of China', and she described Chris Martin as "one of the best people" she's ever met. The singer, who features on Coldplay's new single 'Princess Of China', said she enjoyed hanging out with the band whenever they get together.

Speaking exclusively to Capital FM about her relationship with Chris, Rihanna said: "He is awesome. I only got to hang out with the band a couple of times, like at the Grammys. Chris Martin, he's one of the best people I've ever met, like, genuinely a great person, so sincere. I enjoy hanging out with them every time."

Coldplay and Rihanna recently shot the video for 'Princess Of China', which is expected to be unveiled imminently, and Coldplay are among the artists set to perform at Capital FM's Summertime Ball at London's Wembley Stadium next month. You can listen to Rihanna talking to Capital's showbiz reporter Kevin Hughes at the Capital FM website.

Meanwhile, Ricky Gervais has also spoken up for Coldplay, saying they do not deserve some of the criticism they receive, even if they aren't "the coolest band in the world". Comedian Gervais made the statement in the latest issue of Q, in which he shows his appreciation for big bands who play things "straight down the line". Chris Martin and Gervais have previous with the Chris appearing in an episode of the sitcom "Extras".

Discussing the band, Gervais said: "Coldplay. There's obviously a backlash against them." Adding: "When you meet them they're nice, funny, normal people who are trying to be excellent at something. You can only applaud that. You can dislike their stuff but you can only applaud that attitude, you know?"

Digital Spy have reviewed Coldplay's new single, Princess Of China - and have given it full marks - 5 stars out of 5. More discussion on this review is at the PoC sub-forum now. Read on for the review... [thanks Tash]

Digital Spy: Although Coldplay were on a mission to make Mylo Xyloto their most pop-oriented collection of material to date, we were still shocked when it was announced that they were to team up with Rihanna on a track. Partly because the band had never collaborated with another artist on one of their own albums, but mainly due to the Bajan star's raunchy club numbers seeming at odds with their dulcet tones.

However, it's a combination that prospers from their stylistic differences. "Once upon a time we burned bright/ Now all we ever seem to do is fight," RiRi purrs over an empyrean whirl of colossal beats and celestial synths, before Chris Martin joins in for a round of sky-soaring "ooohs". The result is the cheesecake of songs; two ingredients that on paper seems plain wrong, but in reality is wholly satisfying.

Just a few days ago, an Australian news site reported that Chris Martin had said the Rihanna duet was not a marketing ploy. Here's what they had to say:

With the release of their new single Princess Of China with Rihanna, don't expect Coldplay to be jumping on the "featuring" train again too soon. it was the song that dictated the pop star's involvement with the band, rather than a cynical marketing exercise to work with one of the most popular guest vocalists on the planet. The pair have finished shooting the video, which depicts both as futuristic samurais in a rather intimate scene in which they are singing head to head and Rihanna is caressing Martin's face. It is expected to premiere in the next week.

"I think the guest thing is something we will keep quite special," Martin said. "We were doing Neil Young's Bridge School benefit and went into the studio the day before to mess around and this song came out and our immediate thought was to give it to Rihanna."

But the band members liked it and decided to do an old-fashioned duet. "If a song says it belongs to someone, I don't think you have a choice," he said. Martin has also become rather enamoured of our Gotye and is jealous he didn't write that song, or Oasis's Wonderwall. "Gotye's song inspires jealousy in me," he said. "Just like Wonderwall. Both of them make you slightly angry you didn't write them because they are just that good. I'd give all three of my balls to have written them."

Another tongue-in-cheek interview from Chris Martin has hit the internet on the same day that Coldplay added a second Sydney show in November. Due to overwhelming demand, Coldplay will play a second show at the Sydney Allianz Stadium on Sunday, 18th November (the day after the previously announced show). Meanwhile, Chris told The Sun that the flashing Xylobands are "costing a fortune". Especially if people are going to do this to them. Read on for the full article...

Chris Martin has admitted that the gimmick is costing the band a fortune and the band have considered asking for them back at the end of gigs – but lawyers have warned that they risk being sued if they use the same wristbands.

Martin said: "Most of the money we’re earning on the tour is put into the wristbands. We have to figure out how to keep it going without going broke because it’s a crucial part of the concert."

The band have been touring their latest album 'Mylo Xyloto' since October last year, and have handed out colourful glowing wristbands to every member of the audience ever since. But, while the wristbands give the crowd and incredible pulsating glow of colour, they've also left a bit of a hole in Chris Martin and co.'s collective pocket. Chris said: "You have to clean everything in case someone picks up herpes or TB. Our lawyers told us we’d get sued, and having been sued a few times we’re not keen on that."

Chris Martin also discussed mobile phones at concerts – admitting that people sending text during gigs irks him. He said: "The only thing I fear is texting. If they are texting they are not enjoying the music."

Ahead of the general sale tomorrow for Coldplay's Australasian tour Coldplay's Jonny Buckland has revealed that their 'Mylo Xyloto' tour dates will be as 'interactive' as possible – and that their fans will feel like they're 'part of something' when they watch the band perform this year, Stereoboard writes in another preview article taking exerpts from the New Zealand Herald interview posted earlier.

Stereoboard continue: The band's latest album 'Mylo Xyloto' has seen the band earn even more success across the world, and they'll be touring throughout the year. Explaining the album, Buckland told the New Zealand Herald that the record was the 'most visual' they'd ever made – and they want their forthcoming shows to reflect that. "The idea was to make the most visual album we'd ever made, to think of it visually, so every song had a place and almost filmic quality, Buckland told the paper. "So it is more of a sort of conceptual album, and all that sort of rubbish."

He continued on to talk about the tour, saying: “'Interactive' is a horrible word, but when you go to see it, it feels like you are part of something. You're not just going to look at four idiots up on stage, you really feel like you're stepping into something, like you're in something.”

He finally added that although they band have had an extremely busy touring schedule since the release of the album, they still look forward to every show. "It does seem a little bit scary when you first look at it. But once you start doing it it's great because we genuinely love touring, travelling, and playing - you know, it's a good life."

Bauer Radio has teamed up with Coldplay to broadcast extensive coverage of the Sunderland show taking place on 7th June, according to various sources today. Stations on the Bauer Place and Passion portfolios will combine for Coldplay: In Demand, offering band interviews and coverage of the live performance from the Sunderland Stadium of Light date. On June 14, Coldplay: In Demand will see Bauer Radio devote a two-hour block to Coldplay programming on the night across 20 of its Place and Passion stations, which reach a combined UK audience of 6.4m people. The programming will start with exclusive band interviews from 8pm (bespoke versions for English and Scottish audiences), interspersed with classic Coldplay hits selected by the band and fans.

Between 9pm and 10pm, Coldplay: In Demand will feature an hour of the selected live tracks from the band's sold out show at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, due to go ahead on June 7. Alongside the radio content, Bauer Radio will launch the Coldplay: In Demand website, offering streaming of the live gig content to listeners from midnight on June 15th.

"Coldplay are one of the world's biggest bands, with over 50 million worldwide sales, so we're excited that our unique and exciting evening of programming will connect Coldplay fans across the whole of the UK, harnessing the power of our Portfolios to engage audiences with real 'appointment to listen' radio," said Ric Blaxill, the music & content director at Bauer Radio. "We are really proud of our ability to deliver quality live music experiences to listeners, whether through arena events, intimate gigs or broadcasts like this one which follows in the footsteps of similar deals with U2, Rihanna, Lily Allen, Kings of Leon and The Script."

Kevin McCabe, the senior vice president of promotion & publicity at Coldplay's label EMI Music, added: "Bauer have always been strong supporters of Coldplay throughout the years, so we are delighted to be able to build on that relationship to create something special for all their listeners with a band that are at the top of their game right now."

The campaign will be aired on Bauer Place stations - Key 103, Radio City, Rock FM, Hallam FM, Viking FM, Radio Aire, Metro Radio, TFM, CFM, Clyde 1, Forth One, Cool FM, Northsound 1, MFR, Radio Tay, Radio Borders and West FM; as well as Passion portfolio stations Kerrang!, Q and The Hits.

Full of the stadium grandeur you might expect from the likes of Coldplay, Chris, Jonny, Will and Guy dazzled at an explosive show at France's Stade Charles Ehrmann in Nice last night, writes Gigwise, as Coldplay edge closer to the UK dates with last night's show in France.

Supported by Marina and the Diamonds and current UK chart topper Rita Ora, the band staged a show packed full of confetti explosions, laser shows and plenty of onstage lunacy from frontman Martin. Meanwhile, organisers at Coventry's Ricoh Arena have issued a travel warning for next Tuesday's concert (29th May), as fans are urged to allow plenty of time to reach the stadium since there will be changes to usual transport arrangements around the site.

Via Coventry Observer: "We are encouraging Coldplay fans to start planning their journeys now rather than making last-minute arrangements on the day," said Vaughan Pollard, deputy safety officer at the Ricoh Arena. "All taxis will be directed to Tesco’s car-parks within the Arena Shopping Park via signs that will be installed to indicate where they should go and we are asking everyone to respect that. People will be dropped off and picked-up in the same area in the car-park which is near the service road round to the left of Tesco’s so we are asking everyone to be patient because there will be plenty of taxis arriving regularly. This location also applies to private hire vehicles and drivers should have verification of customers’ details to show to stewards to gain access to Arena Shopping Park.

"We don’t want anyone to be dropped off or picked up on the A444 to avoid anyone being injured by other vehicles and Arena Shopping Park provides a safe drop off and pick-up point. There will be a shuttle bus service running from Coventry railway station and Pool Meadow bus station which will drop off passengers at the top of the underpass near the Ricoh and pick-up in the same place as usual, priced at £5 for the round trip."

The turnstiles will open at 5pm and concert goers are urged not to bring umbrellas, large bags or alcohol which are prohibited items and there is no storage space available but small bottles of water will be allowed. The usual park and walk sites will be in operation at Christ the King, Exhall Grange School, St Finbars FC and Holbrook Primary School, priced at £15. Bookings and directions are available from ricoharena.com. On-site car parking is also available at car parks A, B and C, priced at £20 plus booking fee which can also be booked by visiting ricoharena.com. The last train to London is 23.31 and the last trains to Birmingham New Street are at 00.10 and 01.13.

Coldplay won four awards at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards last night (May 20th) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Coldplay took home the gongs for Top Rock Artist, Top Alternative Artist, Top Rock Album and Top Alternative Album. More on these awards are at the Coldplay forum now.

Coldplay were also nominated for Top Rock Song (Paradise), Top Alternative Song (Paradise) and Top Duo/Group but didn't win these categories. Meanwhile, Adele was the big winner at the awards, taking home twelve major gongs at the ceremony, including Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album for 21.

LMFAO were also one of the night's top winners, taking home six awards - with Party Rock Anthem picking up the prize for Hot 100 Song Of The Year, with Red Foo stating: "This is a dream come true."

If there was an award for Most Swagger then Justin Bieber would have been victorious after a clown-and-geisha-assisted future-funk performance of Boyfriend, with the 18-year old also taking home the night's first gong for Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence, writes MTV UK. JB swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said: "I just want to say how much of a blessing it's been... the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody. I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position."

Julie Bowen took a moment out of the program early on to pay tribute to late Bee Gees member Robin Gibb, who died earlier in the day Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

The night also featured a touching tribute to recently passed disco queen Donna Summer by Natasha Bedingfield and a segment devoted to music legend Whitney Houston with a medley of her indelible hits performed by John Legend and Jordin Sparks.

Daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the Billboard Millennium Award on behalf of her late mother. "I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all," she said. "Not just when it was good, but when it was bad too ... thank you so much for showing that much love, because she deserved it."

Katy Perry was handed the Spotlight Award for tying the record set by Michael Jackson of five #1 hits from the same album, for her handful of smashes from Teenage Dream. Some other men got a bit of attention as well, with an absent Lil Wayne beating out Chris Brown, Drake, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber for Male Artist of the Year.

Brown got his chance a bit later with a win in the R&B Artist of the Year category, Foster the People took Top Rock Song for Pumped Up Kicks, Coldplay were named Top Rock Artist, U2 Top Touring Act and an Icon Award for Stevie Wonder.

Among the night's other performers, Kelly Clarkson made the televised debut of her rocking ballad Dark Side and The Wanted were busy Chasing The Sun and saying they were Glad You Came above the sound of shrieks from their female admirers.

A topless Breezy rode his glowing BMX bike out for a high-energy lip-synched run through Turn Up The Music, while Usher got all gothic and mysterious with a flashy, Las Vegas-worthy, high-concept staging of Scream. Bieber's protégé Carly Rae Jepsen also took to the stage to sing her hit single Call Me Maybe, while Carrie Underwood stood her ground amid a sea of blowing fans during Blown Away.

In addition, the performance-heavy show had Linkin Park cranking up the flames for Burn It Down, Nelly Furtado sporting Big Hoops, Alicia Keys jamming with Icon winner Wonder, Perry doing a high-wire act in the virtual clouds during Wide Awake.

Coldplay will play at the Paralympic Games closing ceremony, marking the end of the London 2012 Games, according to various UK sources today. The announcement that the group will perform at the ceremony on September 9th has been made ahead of tomorrow’s milestone of 100 days to go until the start of the Paralympic Games. The band has been working with Kim Gavin, artistic director of the Olympic and Paralympic closing ceremonies, and Coldplay’s live show co-designer and Paralympic Games closing ceremony designer, Misty Buckley. They will play a set alongside a cast of almost 2,000 performers in the Olympic stadium, providing the soundtrack to a celebration of Britain’s rich culture of festivals.

Chris Martin was reported as saying: "Being asked to play at the closing celebrations for the Paralympic athletes in London is such a great honour for us. Kim Gavin and Misty Buckley are working hard to put on a spectacular Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony for the athletes and spectators in the stadium, and everyone watching around the world, and we are so happy to be involved. It will be one of the biggest nights of our lives and we’re very excited to try to create a performance for the last night of the games that will close London 2012 in style."

More than 1million tickets for the Paralympics also go on sale tomorrow at 11am. The Paralympic Games closing ceremony is called Festival of Flame and will see Coldplay perform a live and one off concert in the Olympic Stadium, broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 750m people. Mr Gavin said: "The closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games is essentially a celebration of the achievements of amazing athletic endeavour of Paralympians from around the world over the previous 11 days. What better way to demonstrate our respect and commitment to these athletes than by celebrating with Britain’s most internationally renowned band. Working with Coldplay for the closing ceremony will be a great way to close the Paralympic Games and audiences will have the chance to see and hear their music in a totally unique way. Our show will be a celebration of the UK as a centre for festivals, which is a fitting finale to the amazing festival of sport that is the London 2012 Games."

Tickets going on sale tomorrow include those to the Paralympic Games’ opening and closing ceremonies, and to all sports, including athletics, which has been the biggest seller so far. Last year’s sale of Paralympic tickets saw more than 1m snapped up by fans. Seb Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), said: "The London 2012 Paralympic Games are going to be spectacular. I am delighted that Coldplay are going to be helping us celebrate not only the end of a fantastic Paralympic Games, but also the end of a seven year journey.

With tickets back on sale tomorrow I can guarantee that whatever ticket you decide to go for that Paralympic sport will leave a deep and lasting impression on you. The athletes involved in the Paralympic Games are incredible sportsmen and women and I urge everyone to take this chance to be there and to form memories that will last a lifetime."

Coldplay and Rihanna have revealed a behind the scenes footage from the shoot of their 'Princess of China' video via the ColdplayVEVO YouTube account, but the video has since been made private, according to viewers this evening. However, this hasn't stopped the video from appearing on Perez TV via the Perez Hilton celebrity website (they like the trailer by the way).

Some of the behind the scenes shots include Rihanna and Chris Martin being hoisted in the air by wires as well as the Coldplay frontman brandishing a samurai sword, while Rihanna lays comfortably on a sofa in traditional geisha attire. The accompanying music video will see Chris Martin and Rihanna team up to create an "old kung-fu styled" movie, according to Rihanna in the backstage footage. Jonny, Will and Guy do not feature in the video, or the Behind The Scenes footage.

Expaining the concept of the video, Rihanna says: "The final concept is, like, a movie trailer to an old kung-fu film. how awesome is that, right?" adding, "I get to play a bad samurai bitch!"

The video for 'Princess Of China' is expected to premiere in full within the coming weeks.

It was revealed yesterday Coldplay had considered playing the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin (New Zealand), but ruled it out for logistical reasons - Dunedin airport's limitations could be another stumbling block to the city hosting top international music acts, it appears, according to the Otago Daily Times this weekend. [thanks Tash]

As we've heard in the last few days Coldplay will be touring stadiums down under on the Mylo Xylotour as they announced four dates in Australia and New Zealand. Asked yesterday if stadium representatives had tried to persuade Coldplay to play in Dunedin, Dunedin Venues Management chief executive David Davies said he had been "actively involved" with Coldplay's promoter over bringing the show to Dunedin, but after the promoter did some research, they decided to stick with just an Auckland show because of logistical issues.

Those were that the band's wide-bodied jet, which they used to transport their lighting rig, would be unable to fly fully laden out of Dunedin International Airport. A representative of Coldplay's Australasian promoter, Chugg Entertainment, could not be reached for comment yesterday, and Coldplay's New Zealand publicist referred questions to Chugg. But Dunedin International Airport chief executive John McCall said while he did not know what kind of jet Coldplay used, there were limitations at Dunedin because of the airport's runway.

A fully laden Boeing 747, for example, could not take off from Dunedin because the runway was too short. In fact, the same was true of most New Zealand airports, apart from Auckland and Christchurch, Mr McCall said. Top international acts reported to use Boeing 747s for transporting equipment include U2, Lady Gaga and Madonna. Mr Davies said Dunedin would not get every show that came to New Zealand, but stadium acts always presented an opportunity which would be pursued. Chris Martin stayed in Dunedin in 2003 while his then soon-to-be wife Gwyneth Paltrow was filming the biopic Sylvia.

More details of Coldplay's Australian tour in November are emerging ahead of the official announcement expected, according to sources including the Herald Sun, the Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail and the NZ Herald today.

Dates cited by these sources include Auckland (November 10th), Melbourne (13th November), Sydney (November 17th) and Brisbane (November 21st), with additional dates in these cities to be tagged on depending on demand. Coldplay are officially stadium rockers. Ending months of speculation, Coldplay will perform at Sydney's Allianz Stadium on November 17. Tickets start at $99 and go on sale May 25 at 9am from Ticketek (ticketek.com.au). The tour takes in the biggest venues the band has headlined in Australia so far. Frontman Chris Martin said band members were itching to return Down Under. "It's such a special place for us," Martin told Insider. "These venues are pretty huge, the Aussie crowds are always incredible and we'll be bringing everything we've got. It's going to be big."

The opening acts have been hand-picked by Coldplay, including Melbourne band the Temper Trap and US band the Pierces, whose album was produced by Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman. Coldplay's current tour, in support of No.1 album Mylo Xyloto, has been super-sized to fit into stadiums. The band perform several tracks on a catwalk adjacent to the main stage, as well as continuing their concept of a pop-up near the rear of each venue. Every member of the audience is given a special LCD wristband when they enter the venue. The wristbands, featuring a plastic box with the Coldplay logo, illuminate during the concert and become part of the show's hi-tech lighting display.

Fans will see pop star Rihanna, who duets with Martin on the new Coldplay single Princess of China, perform on video screens during the concert. The concert doubles as a veritable greatest hits affair with Coldplay classics like In My Place, Fix You, The Scientist, Yellow, Viva la Vida, God Put a Smile On Your Face, Clocks, Paradise and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall featuring in the overseas set lists.

Last year's single Paradise has become their biggest seller to date in Australia, reaching sales of 280,000 (four times platinum). Since their 2000 debut Parachutes, Coldplay have sold over 1.2 million copies of their five albums in Australia. Coldplay's last tour here was in 2009 supporting their Viva La Vida album, although the band made a fleeting visit last year to play the Splendour In The Grass festival.

The band will only play east coast dates in Australia, which is set to disappoint fans in Adelaide and Perth. Their November schedule includes the possibility of second dates in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney depending on demand.

The Australasian tour starts with a show in Auckland on November 10. A Coldplay presale for Visa card holders starts on May 17 (see visaentertainment.com.au for full details).

The big Coldplay news this morning from Absolute Radio is that Coldplay's first concert at the Emirates Stadium in London on Friday 1st June will be broadcast live and uninterrupted on Absolute Radio. Coldplay.com reports: We're pleased to report that Absolute Radio will be broadcasting Coldplay's Emirates Stadium show on Friday June 1st completely live. Absolute Radio will take you there as Geoff Lloyd packs up his headphones and heads backstage at the Emirates for this not-to-be-missed one-off Coldplay Hometime Show Special. Geoff’s been given exclusive access to the band and will be chatting to them just moments before they step on stage before Absolute Radio broadcast Coldplay’s entire set live and uninterrupted.

Geoff will also be giving away tickets for this sold-out gig in his Hometime Show in the days leading up to the concert. Geoff Lloyd’s backstage Coldplay Hometime Special will be broadcast live on Absolute Radio from 5pm on Friday June 1st. Coldplay’s set – completely live and interrupted from the Emirates Stadium will follow at 9pm. At 11pm there will be an Absolute Radio 00s special hosted by Pete Donaldson featuring some of Coldplay’s classic tracks.

Tinie Tempah has given an update on his progress in recording his second studio album and has revealed that Coldplay's Chris Martin has been "a big influence" on the record, according to the NME this week.

Speaking about the album in this week's NME, which is on UK newsstands and available digitally now, the rapper [pictured] said that his new record has a "progressive quality" and features a number of high-profile guests. Asked if Dizzee Rascal and Chris Martin feature on the follow-up to 'Disc-Overy', Tinie replied: "Everybody who I've said before and who you've mentioned I've been in with, whether they've vocal-ed something or listened to something or even mentored. Chris Martin has been quite an influence on this album."

Then asked if the record sounded at all like Coldplay, the rapper said: "It's definitely a lot more progressive in the quality of the sound. I've been listening to Lykke Li and Lana Del Rey, the dynamics of the sound, how big and anthemic it gets."

Meanwhile, B.O.B. has been given advice from Chris Martin for his second album, according to the Khaleej Times this week. B.O.B’s 2010 Debut launched hits that co-starred Bruno Mars, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Hayley Williams of Paramore. So for his second album, the rapper wanted to feature his many talents without assists from famous faces. Then he bumped into Coldplay's Chris Martin. “I ran into Chris Martin in a studio in New York and I was like ...’I don’t really want features on my project.’ And he was like, ‘Why the (expletive) not? Like, what? Like, why? What is the reason behind purposely not having features?’”

The 23-year-old says he’s a Coldplay fan and found himself rethinking his original plan. But B.o.B also wondered why Martin would advise him to do collaborations when his band rarely does so. “I’m thinking like, ‘Coldplay, you don’t need a feature. You’re Coldplay.’ At the same time, I kind of understood what he was saying the more I progressed because it’s really just about the music,” B.o.B said. “It’s an art form.”

Now Strange Clouds, released this week, has guest appearances from Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Ryan Tedder, T.I. and Trey Songz. It’s the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated, gold-selling B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, which includes the top 10 hits Nothin’ on You, Airplanes and Magic.

Finally, Live Nation has filed trademark infringement papers against 11 defendants selling unauthorized merchandise at the Hollywood Bowl venue, according to website Hollywood Patch. The concert company behind last week's three Coldplay shows at the Bowl was asking a federal judge to outlaw sales of counterfeit band T-shirts and other merchandise in the area.

Live Nation Merchandise Inc., a unit of the concert company created by the 2010 merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, filed trademark infringement papers against 11 unidentified defendants in connection with unauthorized souvenirs likely to be sold near the venue where Coldplay were set to perform May 1, 2 and 4.

In the complaint, Beverly Hills-based Live Nation contends that unlicensed T-shirts, hats and jerseys bearing Coldplay's trademarks are usually of such poor quality that they could damage the company's reputation. Live Nation wants U.S. District Judge Audrey B. Collins to order that "the state police, local police or local deputy sheriffs, off-duty officers of the same, and any person acting under their supervision" shall "seize and impound any and all infringing merchandise bearing any or all of the group Coldplay's trademarks."

The order would be in effect six hours before and after any performance of the band within a 10-mile vicinity of venues where Coldplay is performing on its current tour. Live Nation also seeks damages, litigation costs and attorney fees.

'99 Problems' blasted from the speakers at the Hollywood Bowl, and the audience turned toward the stage, anxious to see if Jay-Z was going to walk out with a microphone. Screens flashed, telling audience members to put on the wristbands they were handed upon entry. The lights went out. Yes, this was Coldplay’s welcome to the stage at the May 2 Los Angeles show for the Mylo Xyloto tour, and it set the tone for the entire performance: high energy, adrenaline filled, pulse-pounding entertainment. Simply put, a rush of blood to the head. For those who have never attended a Coldplay concert, it is quite possibly one of the most enjoyably exhausting experiences of a lifetime...

Watching Chris Martin, the lead singer, jump around on-stage for 90 minutes could make concert-goers tired for him. But he appeared unfazed, staying true to the motto he stated at the beginning of the show: that the audience has taken the time and effort to come see the band, and for that they deserve to see the band at its best. It didn’t disappoint.

The show, which was as much designed for the as it was for the ears, featured pyrotechnics and neon lights on stage. Laser beams flashed over smoke released from the sides of the amphitheater, creating the illusion of clouds moving above the audience’s heads. Inspired by graffiti and street art, many songs were accompanied by projected images, giving the appearance of graffiti being drawn on the dome of the Hollywood Bowl stage, reminiscent of the “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” music video.

Perhaps the most inspiring part of the show, however, was the Xylobands given to each of the audience members when they entered the concert venue. A simple grosgrain wristband that, upon activation, lit up and flashed in pitch black, creating a sea of color. The bands were programmed to serve as accompaniment to the music. Not only did the Xylobands make for a visual display but also created a sense of audience involvement, making audience members feel as though they were up on stage next to the band; a true part of the show. The sheer anticipation of the bracelets lighting up built a powerful energy in the stands.

Beyond the consuming imagery that had an almost transporting quality, the showmanship was equally impressive. Though songs are always a little altered live compared to the recorded album, there was no attempt by the band to eliminate some of the more challenging parts of their music.

Martin hit the high notes in “Up in Flames” perfectly, played piano beautifully for “The Scientist” and even took on the guitar for “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face.” Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion all backed the lead singer with the same intensity one feels when listening to the band’s music on an iPod. With no shortage of thrills, these guys know how to put on a show.

Some very disappointed Coldplayers who paid top dollar to see Coldplay over the last few days at the Hollywood Bowl ended up getting the cold shoulder instead. People who found some of the tickets on Craigslist, Stubhub, eBay, and other Internet sites -- and paid in the $200-$400 range per seat -- were stunned and disappointed to find that the tickets were fakes. The three Coldplay shows were sellouts at the Bowl, and Hollywood Bowl COO Arvinv Manocha conceded it was a very unfortunate situation. "There was nothing we could do for these unlucky people who were bilked," Manocha said. "Because it was a sellout, there were no other valid tickets to be sold to them."

The takeaway for these and other fans? Stick with the safety of Ticketmaster, and don't be drawn into "too good to be true" ticket finds on other sites on the Internet, writes the Orlando Sentinel today. By avoiding third-party ticket vendors, fans should be able to avoid the cold reality of fake Coldplay tickets, and fraudulent scams for other shows as well. even though i got my ticket through a third party, it wasn't fake--thankfully! i feel so badly for all of you that were taken advantage of! Coldplay have covered the Beastie Boys' song (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) during the third of their three shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday night, in a tribute to founding member Adam Yauch [pictured] who died yesterday. It's not the first time Coldplay have covered this song - remember back in 2009 at the All Points West festival they did exactly the same thing. However, this time it was different as only 24 hours earlier on the 4th May 2012, Adam "MCA" Yauch passed away at the age of 47, following a long battle with salivary gland cancer.

The musician, director and Tibet activist was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in 2009. Yauch underwent surgery and radiation therapy but said in 2011 reports he was totally cancer-free were "exaggerated". Under the alias MCA, he formed part of the band that eventually became the Beastie Boys, selling 40 million albums worldwide with Mike D and Ad Roc.

The Beastie Boys started out as a hardcore punk outfit called The Young Aborigines in 1979 but switched to hip hop in 1984. Two years later they launched their critically-acclaimed debut album Licensed To Ill, which spawned the hit singles (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) and No Sleep Till Brooklyn. Fusing rock guitars with lo-fi hip-hop beats, Licensed To Ill was one of the first rap records to cross over to a mainstream audience - and the first to top the US charts.

But the band became equally well-known for their bratty, bad-boy personas. They were lambasted in the British press for their stage show, which featured giant inflatable phalluses and cage dancers. And, when they began to wear the Volkswagen emblem on chains around their necks, it reportedly led to a rise in vandalised cars. Their obnoxious behaviour undoubtedly started as an in-joke but became something of a self-fulfilling prophecy as their fame increased. Over the years, however, the Beastie Boys rehabilitated their image.

Their second album, Paul's Boutique, was retrospectively considered a masterpiece, its genre-bending sound collages paving the way for the likes of Beck and The Avalanches. Later records saw them play their own instruments and expand their horizons beyond hip-hop. In 1996, they released The In Sound From Way Out! - a collection of jazz and funk instrumentals, while the group collaborated with reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry on 1998's Hello Nasty.

But they are best remembered for their hardcore rap tracks - Sure Shot, Sabotage and the crossover hit Intergalactic. Yauch was the band's filmographer, directing several of their videos under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower. He also directed the band's concert movie Awesome... I Shot That, which stitched together footage from dozens of audience-members. The rapper grew up in Brooklyn, and was fascinated by electronics and explosives at a young age, building small home-made bombs from fireworks he had hoarded at home.

Aged 14, he removed himself from a Quaker school to join a public high school in New York. "I felt I was leading too much of a sheltered life," he told Rolling Stone in 1998. There he taught himself bass guitar, after discovering punk through The Clash's debut album. His new schoolfriends also introduced him to his future bandmates for the first time.

In addition to his rap career, Yauch was heavily involved in the Free Tibet movement, and co-organised several fundraising concerts in the 1990s. "I think that movies and CDs... they affect the way people think," he told PBS in 1997. "I know they've radically affected the way I think."

He revealed he had cancer in a salivary gland in his neck in July 2009, which led to the scrapping of a tour and an album - Hot Sauce Committee, Pt 1. In an email to fans later that year, he said the tumour had been removed and he was feeling "healthy, strong and hopeful".

Yauch travelled to a Tibetan community in Dharamsala in India after surgery. He told fans: "I'm taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors I've been eating a vegan/organic diet."

But in January 2010, he was forced to deny press reports that he was fully recovered. "I'm continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future," he said in a statement. The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month, but Yauch was not able to attend. On the night, The Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their performance to Yauch.

He is survived by his wife, Dechen Wangdu, and their daughter, Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

What an air-tight Technicolor delight Coldplay presented Tuesday night at the Hollywood Bowl, the British quartet’s first of three sold-out shows at the landmark amphitheater, followed by a headlining turn Saturday in Irvine at KROQ’s 20th annual Weenie Roast, writes the OC Register in another review of Coldplay's concerts at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night (1st, 2nd & 4th May). We knew something fairly spectacular was in store just walking into the venue, at which point scores of assistants clutching thick, DayGlo-colored wristbands approached every patron insisting each pick a color. I snatched a green one, scoffed a bit at its Twitter sponsorship scrawl, then secured it snugly, forgetting all about the memento while enjoying English electro-pop outfit Metronomy’s satisfying warm-up set. Where a watch face might go, these wristbands instead have a small plastic box with a smaller slit along one side. “Cool,” I thought as the lights went out and Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” yielded to John Williams’ theme from Back to the Future. “Maybe I’ll be able to shoot a laser beam from my wrist and feel like a real superhero.”

Why Coldplay would want to equip nearly 18,000 people with tchotchkes of such blinding potential, well, that I couldn’t figure out. Perhaps it would enable the crowd to virtually graffiti the Bowl’s shell in the same manner as the inside sleeve of the band’s fifth album, last October’s Mylo Xyloto. Not exactly – their gimmick was more smartly employed than that. Within moments of taking the stage, as the group’s current title-track instrumental gave way to its lead-off salvo, “Hurts Like Heaven,” most of these wristbands (some were duds) began to glow a rainbow of colors as far as the eye could see, illuminating the night and flashing in time to the music, electronically triggered by who-knows-what.

Atop the Bowl’s shell came huge blasts of fireworks, like you only get on the Fourth of July. As “Heaven” wrapped and the familiar strains of “In My Place” started to chime, so too did giant confetti blasters throughout the venue begin to coat the crowd in wide slips of tissue paper – some shaped as birds, others as flames. Two songs later, when frontman Chris Martin led his mates into first a rousing “Japanese Lovers” and then a Police-worthy call-and-response for “The Scientist,” enormous balloons (also stuffed with confetti) were launched into the amphitheater. Not just close to the stage, either: At every level of the Bowl, from the orchestra pit to cheaper seats high on the hill, these huge spheres could be seen bouncing above people’s heads. It was practically carnival-like after a while, the ticker-tape celebration of Coldplay’s Viva la Vida shows of four years ago taken to the nth degree. You’d think it would have been too much too soon, an overwhelmingly joyful launch establishing a level of exuberance that surely couldn’t be sustained for the rest of a 90-minute set.

Re-examining the show removed from its sudden impact, you realize there actually weren’t other tricks up Coldplay’s collective sleeves. The subtle shifts in mood (video screens switched to black-and-white) as well as position (the encore started with “Us Against the World” from a small makeshift stage in the middle of the venue) are stunts the group has handily pulled off before. Likewise, the fireworks finale for “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” though a sight to behold, merely piled on more of the same pyrotechnics.

Martin & Co. – Edge-y guitarist Jonny Buckland, anchoring bassist Guy Berryman, crucial linchpin Will Champion providing dynamic drumming (forceful like Dave Grohl one minute, nuanced like Stewart Copeland the next) – certainly recapture the thrillingly inspirational spirit that surges through the best of U2. For years now they’ve stamped it with their own similar-yet-distinct trademarks, particularly chant-worthy choruses with global appeal. But technological marvels they so far aren’t. Whenever a gleaming new zillion-dollar production from Bono’s gang hits town, I’m left gawking, wondering “how’d they do that?” during at least a half-dozen tunes. I know exactly how Coldplay pulled off its frenzied party at the Bowl, and that’s the genius of it: They’ve taken the same materials countless superstars have used over the years and fashioned something entirely fresh out of them, creating an interactive experience that engages seemingly every member of the audience to a fuller extent than any arena-level show has before.

Even more impressive is that all this artifice never obscures the music, only enhances it. I wasn’t wild about Mylo Xyloto when it dropped in fall – it seemed as much a confused comedown after another peak studio performance (2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends) as 2005’s sleek, sometimes soulless X&Y was to the band’s masterful monster A Rush of Blood to the Head from 2002. We Californian fans have had a long time to stew in the new material, while Coldplay has indulged only brief benefit sets locally (at Pauley Pavilion, at Club Nokia), always without the full-blown array they’ve been bringing to basketball halls from coast to coast.

The disc isn’t exactly improving as it sinks in; for every high-impact moment, whether over-the-top (“Paradise”) or minimalistic (“Us Against the World”), there’s another cut whose energy can turn sludgy from so much Eno-assisted glitter. Yet so much of that has been stripped away on stage. Right off the bat, “Hurts Like Heaven” sounded less like an iffy attempt at mainstream electro-rock and more like a storming anthem, powered by Champion pounding. “Major Minus,” instantly among the most U2-like creations in the Coldplay catalog, was doubly so in its charging rendition at the Bowl, while “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart,” which led an invigorating string of selections to finish off the main set, came devoid of synthetic wash and soared ever higher because of its reliance on good old-fashioned guitar-rock. In moments like that, you could detect what their new album might have become had they opted to fulfill a desire to get back to basics rather than chasing their next envelope-pushing whim.

On tour they’ve developed a convincing fusion of the two: What’s merely interesting on Mylo Xyloto (a concept album with a larval narrative about love among the futuristic ruins) has became positively commanding live, each new piece building from strength to strength. Even lesser or quieter passages, like a mid-set pairing of “Princess of China” (Rihanna joined via video) and the soulful ache of “Up in Flames,” came across grippingly. The finesse the group brings equally to new and older material speaks to both road-seasoning and perfectly blended chemistry: Martin’s tender falsetto has never sounded so spot-on and heartwarming; Buckland’s guitar lines have rarely been so seamlessly integrated. Many songs have been treated to blood transfusions, yet any twists – the lower-register lead-in for “Yellow,” the Springsteenian start to “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face,” an almost impossibly peppy pace for their greatest piece, the ballad “The Scientist” – never spoiled the overall feeling those well-established tracks need to convey. As with Martin’s once-spastic stage antics, now as controlled as his awestruck humility, all of these favorites have nestled into a power zone, surpassing their studio counterparts without sacrificing essential elements.

And oh those mighty singalongs! There are few bands on the planet so capable of ripping past people’s too-cool inhibitions to elicit immense cheer. Only for the Boss do L.A. crowds sing so ecstatically, and rarely will they do it at the Bowl. What a testament to the increasing magnetism of Coldplay, and what a rebuke to snoots who can’t see past their thesauruses long enough to hear a lastingly rousing hook when it grabs their soul. The entire thing was so effortlessly buoyant, it seemed to fly past like a lost helium balloon about to get sucked into the ether – yet it also reasserted what a tremendous force this band has become. Easily one of the best shows of the year. No matter how much the Black Keys killed at Coachella, it’s still a shame this wasn’t the fest’s super-happy opening-night explosion, like Arcade Fire on steroids.

Chris Martin has been suffering from tinnitus for a decade, according to various UK sources this morning, including the Daily Mail, Mirror and the Huffington Post. You can read more discussion on this story at the Coldplay forum now [thanks lutzno]

Chris, who blames the painful ear condition on listening to loud music as a teenager, is warning youngsters to avoid the same fate. He said the ringing in his ears and headaches had stabilised since he started protecting his ears. After doctors warned him the tinnitus could end his musical career, he began wearing earplugs at concerts and when he is performing.

He said: "Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don’t think about until there’s a problem. I’ve had tinnitus for about ten years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn’t got any worse – touch wood. But I wish I’d thought about it earlier. Now [the band] always use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try to protect our ears. You can use industrial headphones, but that looks strange at a party."

Chris Martin now makes sure his children, Apple, seven, and Moses, six, are protected from loud music at all times. Apple was pictured wearing giant ear defenders at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park in 2005. Chris is endorsing a campaign by Action On Hearing Loss – the new name for the RNID – to get people wearing earplugs at gigs and clubs. Fellow sufferers rapper Plan B and 80s popstar Gary Numan have also joined the campaign. Plan B, 28, said: "At first I thought it was trains rushing by as I live near a railway line. It’s caused by years of being subjected to loud music."

The condition is caused when hair cells in the ears are damaged by exposure to loud noise and cause a whistling, ringing or buzzing sound when there is none. Some sufferers hear a sound constantly, while for others it is intermittent. Gary Numan, 54, also revealed he was no longer able to mix music after damaging his ears during the peak of his career. He added: "I didn’t look after my ears and I’m in trouble."

Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the head or ears when there is no external source. Sufferers may hear it in one or both ears, in the head or somewhere above the head. The noise can be high, medium or low-pitched – whistling, ringing or buzzing. They may hear one noise or two noises and they can be continuous or come and go. Around half a million people have tinnitus serious enough to affect their quality of life. They have difficulty sleeping or it interferes with work and concentration.

It can happen when hair cells are damaged by exposure to loud noise so musicians are vulnerable. Tinnitus is related to anxiety and when someone is feeling stressed tinnitus can seem louder. Sufferers have good days and bad days. Some people find it difficult to adjust to living with the condition and should see their GP. Tinnitus isn’t a sign of something else but you should also get your hearing checked. Most importantly, avoid silence. Keep a radio on during the day or at night use a natural sound like waves on a beach. A ticking clock and relaxation exercises can also help.

As was predicted a couple of weeks ago, Stephen Fry has at long last been overtaken at the top of the UK celebrity twitter chart by Coldplay.

Despite joining the Twitter revolution only 74 days ago, Coldplay have amassed an amazing 425,000 followers, and currently sit 17th in the list of top Twitters. Back to the UK, there two new entries into the top five – Russell Brand eases into fourth place and Neil Gaiman has added almost 100,000 followers in a couple of weeks to get to fourth place.

Another big mover is Richard Bacon who has added 50,000 followers in the past two weeks – people who set up a Twitter account a couple of days ago were advised that he was one of the suggested people to follow, along with Al Gore, Perez Hilton and Miley Cyrus, so that might explain his sudden leap in popularity.

Further to the Italian balloons and crowns we told you about ahead of the Coldplay concert in Udine on Monday, and the yellow Coldplaying t-shirts that will be donned by over 100 people inside Wembley stadium, we have news of a new choreographed event in collaboration with Coldplayzone and Coldplayitalia that will turn Wembley into something never seen before - a stadium full of yellow glowsticks.

In the hope of distributing the glowstick bracelets in the queues before the venue we are asking you if you are attending either/both Wembley concerts to help out by purchasing a bulk supply of yellow glowsticks online and bring them with you.
