In 2003, "The Scientist" won multiple MTV Video Music Awards for Best Group Video, Best Direction, and Breakthrough Video. It was also nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Music Video: Short Form. The single cover features drummer Will Champion, art-directed by Sølve Sundsbø.

The music video for "The Scientist" was very popular with its reverse narrative. A similar concept was previously used for Spike Jonze's music video for The Pharcyde's "Drop" and "Weird Al" Yankovic's music video for Amish Paradise. Irish actress Elaine Cassidy is also featured in the video. It took Chris Martin a month to learn the lyrics backwards.

Many blockbuster acts will return. No. 1 bands like Radiohead and Coldplay will be working on new albums. Norman Mailer's new novel is a portrait of Hitler as a young boy, while Michael Chabon's alternate-history thriller is set amongst Yiddish-speaking Alaskans.

Some of the 2007's most anticipated albums come from established names. Coldplay is headed on a Latin American tour early this year to road test new material. The new album, which still has no title, could be ready in 2007 or early 2008, according to a spokeswoman.

Critical favorites such as Wilco, the Shins and Arcade Fire all have albums currently slated for the early part of the year, too. Live recordings of Wilco's new material have recently hit the Internet. Meanwhile, Axl Rose — the frontman of the power-ballad group Guns N' Roses — is trying to make a comeback with an album that has been delayed so many times that its title, "Chinese Democracy," sounds like a winking reference to another long-awaited-for development that's unlikely to arrive in the near future. But the album now has a release date: March 6, 2007.

LONDON - Classic hits by the Beatles and David Bowie will challenge the likes of Beyoncé, Coldplay and Leona Lewis for the No 1 spot when the singles chart opens up to golden oldies.

With Top of the Pops dead, and downloading mums and dads revitalising the music market, the Top 40 chart will undergo the most far-reaching change in its 54-year history on New Year’s Day. A “single” will no longer mean a physical item, be it vinyl — EPs count — or a CD, bought in stores. Any song from pop’s archive will qualify for the chart. The track must have been bought in the previous week, most likely through a download store such as iTunes. In three years downloads have doubled the UK singles market to 65.1 million units this year.

The most immediate effect is that the new chart is likely to be domination by the most recent celebrity to die.

Concert tours by the Rolling Stones, Barbra Streisand and country duo Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were among the top-grossing tours in North America in 2006, helping drive ticket revenue to a record $3.6 billion, according to Pollstar, the industry trade magazine.

The figure represents a 16 percent increase over 2005, when North American concert ticket sales totaled $3.1 billion, said Gary Bongiovanni, Pollstar's editor-in-chief.

Concert receipts for the top 100 tours of the year totaled $2.33 billion, up 12.6 percent from last year. "Not only did we set a record for gross revenues, but we did it by selling more tickets rather than more expensive tickets," Bongiovanni said.

Fans purchased 37.9 million tickets to the top 100 concert tours, compared with 36.3 million in 2005, according to Pollstar.

The average ticket price paid to attend a show on those tours was $61.45, up 8 percent over last year's average of $56.88, Bongiovanni said.

The average ticket price increase, which amounts to about $4.57, was similar to the increase seen between 2004 and 2005.

"That's a good sign for the business," Bongiovanni said.

The Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang" tour, which actually began in the fall of 2005, led all other concert tours this year with $138.5 million in gross receipts, Pollstar said.

The average Stones ticket was $136.63. The tour sold about 1.01 million tickets.

Streisand's tour ranked second, generating $92.5 million in gross sales. The average ticket price was $298.36.

The tour by McGraw and Hill earned $88.8 million in gross receipts, with the average ticket selling for $80.92.

Meanwhile, Madonna's tour racked up $85.9 million in gross ticket sales. The average ticket price paid to see the Material Girl was $183.76.

Country crooner Kenny Chesney's tour led all others in the number of tickets sold with 1.13 million. His tour pulled in $66 million in gross receipts, with the average ticket going for $58.34.

Among the other veteran acts that ended the year among the top 25 in sales receipts were Coldplay, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion and The Who.

According to a survey conducted by www.thebestof.co.uk, Coldplay can be found on #5 on the list of the UK's favourite bands.

More than 1,000 people took part in the survey, voting The Beatles as their favourite band, Sean Connery as their favourite actor and the Mini as their favourite car.The Beatles, good manners, and cups of tea are among 100 things that put the Great into Britain, says a survey. John, Paul, George and Ringo - the biggest selling pop group of the 20th century with 40 number ones in the UK alone - romped home as the nation's all-time favourite band.

Original James Bond Sean Connery is named top actor while the Aston Martin DB5 he drove in 1964 007 film Goldfinger is top sports car. Another Bond favourite, Dame Judi Dench, is top actress. Singer-songwriter Kate Bush, who in 2005 released her first album for 12 years, is voted favourite female pop star while Only Fools and Horses, starring David Jason, is leading TV comedy.

More than 1,000 people took part in the survey by website www.thebestof.co.uk, which recommends shops, restaurants and businesses. Best Of British boss Nigel Botterill said: "There is something unique about British life and these are the people and qualities that make it that way. "It was fascinating to see that good manners was still there as the number one quality in our culture. It goes hand in hand with good service."

Another year has passed, and it's time to look back at the past 12 months and what has happened with and around Coldplay.

The year was filled with exciting gigs & events, break-up rumours and baby news.

Gigs

From January to April, Coldplay toured the United States with 32 concerts in total, including two amazing gigs at the Verizon Wireless Theater in Toronto which were supposed to be released on a Live DVD - after all, it has only been announced to be televised around the world in the time of Christmas and New Year. If you wish to add your support to the creation of a DVD, please sign our petition.

In June and July, the band performed 11 gigs in Australia, followed by 6 gigs in Asia.

Appearances and Events

On February 8, Coldplay performed 'Talk' live at the Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but unfortunately didn't take home any awards.

On February 14, Coldplay performed 'Talk' and scooped the awards for 'Best Single' and 'Best Album' at the Brit Awards. In his acceptance speech, Chris raised rumours of a possible break-up when saying: "This means so much to us, especially now. It's going to be a few years before you see us again."

On September 27, Chris Martin joined good friend Jay-Z on stage at the first ever hip hop concert at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London. He added his vocals for the chorus of "Heart of the City" and played the piano for "Dead Presidents". In addition, Chris' wife Gwyneth Paltrow joined the rapper on stage to provide backing vocals for "Song Cry".

On November 27, Chris Martin performed a solo session within the scope of a charity project at the Union Chapel in London. He covered two Bob Dylan songs, played a track by The Killers and introduced a brand new Coldplay song called 'Bucket For A Crown'.

Collaborations

Chris Martin collaborated with several artists this year:

During a jam session in February, a duet called 'Homecoming' was recorded with Kanye West [pictured]. The track is to be released on the rapper's upcoming album in early 2007.

To support a charity organisation for the victims of hurricane Katrina, Chris Martin joined R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe in the studio to record the track 'In The Sun'. The track was later released along with other versions on an exclusive iTunes EP.

Chris Martin co-wrote a song for Nelly Furtado's latest album 'Loose'. The track, called ''All Good Things (Come To An End)'' was also recorded with Chris' vocals for the chorus, but was only released as Nelly's solo version.

The track 'Beach Chair', recorded by Jay-Z and Chris Martin, made its way to the rapper's album 'Kingdom Come', released in November.

Within the year 2006, Coldplay split with their management and decided to only consult their US agent, Dave Holmes from now on; have started the building of their own headquarters in London and have gone back into the studio to record their 4th studio album.

In addition, several break-up rumours were floating around, stirred up by Chris Martin himself because of his controversial acceptance speech at the Brit Awards, and heated up by the fact that 3 of 4 band members have become daddies within the past 2 years and obviously were in need of some quality time with their families!

Baby Blabber

2006 saw the birth of not one, but three Coldplay toddlers:

On April 8, Chris Martin and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow welcomed baby boy Moses Bruce Anthony Martin into the world. He was introduced to the world by an exclusive photoshoot published in People Magazine just two weeks later.

In May, Will Champion and his wife Marianne welcomed a baby girl called Ava Champion into the world. It's their first child and they've kept the little girl undercover since then.

On September 17, Guy Berryman and his wife Joanna became proud parents of a baby girl as well: Nico Berryman. A few months earlier, Joanna has talked in an interview about her pregnancy and her husband.

2007

2007 is expected to be an even more exciting year - the guys are working on their 4th studio album and will play some intimate concerts in South America at the beginning of the year.

Coldplay will unveil a batch of new songs during a Latin American tour in February and March. The trek will begin with a Feb. 14-16 stand in Santiago, Chile, and will run through a March 3 show in Mexico City.

"Having received such a phenomenal response to their last Latin American trip in 2003, [the band] personally chose to return to the region," reads a post on Coldplay's website, which also lists details for ticket onsales. The new material is earmarked for Coldplay's fourth studio album, which is tipped for a late 2007 release via Capitol. It will be the follow-up to 2005's "X&Y," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.

Ricky and Nick from the Kaiser Chiefs will kick-start the special series by fronting the radio programme on January 2. They will be followed on consecutive days by the Editors, the Young Knives, Mike Skinner from The Streets, and The Automatic. Snow Patrol will take control on January 10, followed by Kelly O, Jamie T, and The View. The final shows will belong to The Zutons and Chris Martin on January 17 and 18.

Britain's music invasion may have happened 40 years ago but the current crop of musicmakers from across the pond are still making major noise if the Top Ten concerts of 2006 in Toronto are any indication. Half of the artists on the list hail from England -- including The Who, who were part of the original invasion.

Coldplay with Richard Ashcroft (March 22, Air Canada Centre): The first perfect concert of the year -- rated five out of five -- featured an exciting Brit-pop matchup that doesn't get much better, although the Arctic Monkeys opening for Oasis earlier in the week at the same venue came awfully close.

Both Coldplay's Chris Martin and Ashcroft, formerly of The Verve, are riveting performers and didn't disappoint in the first of two sold-out shows. Coldplay, in their third visit to Toronto in less than a year, obviously felt comfortable in our city, too, filming both ACC performances for a DVD. In March 2006, Coldplay’s Air Canada Centre show in Toronto was filmed in HD quality by more than 20 cameras. Director Hamish Hamilton has now crafted the footage into a 60-minute film which is being shown by TV stations across the globe (billed by some as ‘Coldplay - How We Saw The World’). As reported earlier, Coldplay have posted a special Christmas message on their official website, capturing the band dressed-up as Victorian gentlemen dancing to rave versions of their songs. This is now available from today to non-members.

The short black and white clip sees Chris Martin and co in full festive spirit, backed by a cheap dance mix of Coldplay tracks. It was shot last week and concludes with Martin [Jonny Buckland actually - ed.]announcing: "I predict that railways will be big in the future."

The video can be seen on the band's official website, which is also running a competition to win a shirt won by the Coldplay frontman during the group's world tour this year.

As previously reported, Coldplay will play a string of shows in South America next year, where they are expected to showcase songs from their forthcoming new LP.

The pioneer of digital music, today announced the winners of the "2006 Napster Awards," the first awards to honor artists and songs for accomplishments in digital music.

In contrast to other music industry awards, the Napster Awards are determined by the actual listening behavior of music fans who subscribe to Napster's industry-leading subscription service and play over one billion songs each year.

Presented to the artists and songs that enjoyed the highest number of plays in the service between December 1, 2005 and November 30, 2006, the Napster Awards illustrate that there is a significant difference between the music that sells the most and the music that's played the most when fans are in an unlimited access music subscription environment.

The 2006 Napster Award for "Most-Played Artist" went to singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, whose mellow acoustic grooves were a huge hit among Napster's half a million subscribers who played his music more than any other artist's. The Napster Award for "Most-Played Song" went to the pop/punk single "Dance, Dance" from Chicago's Fall Out Boy. Punctuating the difference between sales figures and subscriber plays, Jack Johnson, Napster's most played artist, was not recognized by the 2006 Billboard Music Awards which track sales and radio airplay and "Dance, Dance," Napster's most played song, was not among the top 10 tracks sold on iTunes in 2006.

Napster subscribers have on-demand, unlimited access to over 3 million full-length songs for one monthly fee without paying a dollar a track, so their listening activities are a measure of the songs and artists they actively chose to play most over the past year. Napster calculated the total number of plays of each song and artist in its vast catalog over the past year in each of the five countries where it offers its PC-based service to determine the recipients of the 2006 Napster Awards. Napster also created categories that go beyond the mainstream in order to reflect the diversity of music that fans chose when they had the freedom to discover, explore and enjoy without limits.

Underscoring that diversity and recognizing the importance of unsigned artists to Napster's subscribers, Napster is honoring Southern California Hip Hop artist Jadox for being the service's "Most Played Self Published Artist." Napster's massive database revealed that Scott Joplin was the most played artist whose last recorded release was the longest time ago, earning the ragtime legend a posthumous "Unstoppable Artist" award. Beeb bosses have enlisted the stars to help cover Zane Lowe's 7-9pm show while the DJ is on leave.

Ricky and Nick from the Kaiser Chiefs will kick-start the special series by fronting the radio programme on January 2. They will be followed on consecutive days by the Editors, the Young Knives, Mike Skinner from The Streets, and The Automatic. Snow Patrol will take control on January 10, followed by Kelly O, Jamie T, and The View. The final shows will belong to The Zutons and Chris Martin on January 17 and 18.

Grand Ole Party are currently in talks with Dave Holmes who, under the label 3D Management manages Coldplay and The Elected, among other bands.

Good news for European Coldplay Fans. The german TV Program "3Sat" will broadcast the Toronto 2006 Concert on January 1st, 2007. Air Time will be 1.30 am (CET -1). Looks like the broadcast will take approx. 1 hour (3Sat does not have advertising).

You can receive 3Sat on Astra Satellite (19,2 East) and on German cable networks. the channel is usually unencrypted, and broadcasts on digital transponder. The link you need is http://www.3sat.de/poparoundtheclock_index.html

3sat will broadcast several concerts on that day (U2, Depeche Mode, etc.).

Eskimo Joe's frontman Kav Temperley was recently seen wandering the streets of New York talking gibberish.

He hadn’t lost the plot, though an early flight to New York the day after a big night at the ARIA Awards didn’t help his state of mind. Rather he was reciting the lyrics to New York backwards as part of some technical wizardry for the song’s video. “I was ridiculously jetlagged, majorly hung over and had to learn how to sing backwards,” Temperley says. “It’s not easy, especially if your head isn’t quite there. Running around New York for a day listening to the same song backwards over and over didn’t help.”

Temperley didn’t uncover any satanic messages listening to his lyrical handiwork in reverse. “Most of them were just gobbledygook, like ‘hairy socially’,” Temperley says. The sing-backwards effect was used most famously in Coldplay’s The Scientist. Chris Martin did it so well he’s been known to repeat the trick on stage. “Weird twisted freak,” Temperley says. “It’s really hard.”
