EMI showcases iconic vinyl artwork with Art Vinyl

EMI Music UK today announced a deal with innovative designer frame manufacturer Art Vinyl to sell vinyl copies of a selection of its classic albums presented in a special ‘frame plus vinyl’ package.

Creating a value around the visual aspect of album artwork, the deal extends the concept of record sleeves as art in their own right. Classic albums from the likes of Pink Floyd, Coldplay, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Gorillaz and Blur are available to purchase now, just in time for Christmas.

Hello Chris. How are things?

Well, it's quite a nerve-wracking time, but it's also tremendously exciting. We've finished the album, it's been released, we've decided what some singles are and we're in the process of making videos. We've also finished planning our actual tour concert, which is a good feeling.

How much do the band control that planning?

A thousand percent. We think about where we're gonna play and what mix of old and new songs we'll have. We think about reinterpreting songs and how we can make the journey of a concert as exciting as possible. And basically we try to make something that's as entertaining as any other night out; we are trying to compete with Cats and Starlight Express. Our one goal is to make sure that people who spend their money get entertained. We think about that a lot. We think about how every song looks and what the ideal place to be is and who will see this best from which place. We probably get a bit too obsessed with it, to be honest.

Color me cautiously intrigued.

So, Coldplay are well on their way to completing their fourth album. The band's note promises that "the music still has integrity". Talk about a way more radical departure than anything Timbaland [pictured] could've cooked up...

That's about all we get for now, aside from some references to "dense" sound and "so many melodies and colours packed into a relatively short space (42 mins)". It's real and honest. It's light on details.

Sounds like the possible Timbaland collaboration that EW.com reported in February hasn't materialized. Despite all that, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing what Coldplay's got in store for LP4 — especially since the band has indicated that they're interested in switching up their familiar sound this time around.

And now that Radiohead themselves have already released by far the most awesome early-Radiohead throwback ever, the competition's looking pretty stiff for Chris Martin and his merry crew of dudes who really, really like The Bends. They've got a lot riding on this one, considering how their world-beating success started to curdle into an only partially-deserved backlash on their last effort.

Still, it's hard to be disappointed when the band's been working instead with a producer as legendary as Brian Eno (Roxy Music, U2) — no slouch in the experimental-genius department. I guess Chris Martin's taste for hip-hop only runs so far. There's no posturing or bombast." Wait, no posturing or bombast? On a Coldplay record?! So what can we glean from their recent announcement?
