The organisation behind the Brit Awards, the BPI, has a habit of portraying the Brits as a lovable but wayward pubescent. In the weeks before the show (next year's will be held on February 14) it always issues statements claiming that the Brits are synonymous with unscripted craziness - you just never know what will happen at the so-called music industry Oscars! Remember Jarvis v Jackson? Remember when implacable political opponents Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba and John Prescott came face to face, and Nobacon did what any self-respecting anarchist would do? Must-see television, miss at your peril, etc.

It's all a smokescreen to obscure the fact that the Brits haven't gone off-piste in years. Nobody has so much as lobbed a vol au vent at host Chris Evans, let alone properly misbehaved. Not even the Kaiser Chiefs, who won three awards this year - so much for predicting a riot. And the Brits' other supposed big draw, one-off performances by unlikely duos, has become a stunt whose weakness was epitomised in 2006 by the pairing up of - wait for it - Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield.

Viewers' indifference was reflected in the ratings, which dropped to 4.6 million this year, despite performances by Coldplay and Kanye West. Part of the blame can be pinned on the surfeit of competing music awards programmes, from the NMEs to the Mobos. But the real problem for the Brits is the perception that they're stodgy and corporate. They can hardly deny it, given that their website is titled 'the Brit Awards with MasterCard'.The BPI's response was to announce yesterday that the 2007 awards would be the first in 20 years to be broadcast live. Viewers will see it as it happens, rather than an edited version 24-hours later, and you just know the organisers are praying that some pop star (James Blunt?) will be headbutted by another (a Sugababe, with the will of the entire nation behind her?) right on stage.

But it's just not going to happen. The people who win Brits these days aren't the applecart-upsetting type. If only Coldplay or Keane DID act up now and then. Keane, who won in 2005 and could win again in 2007, may have trouble in their ranks at the moment, with their frontman Tom Chaplin admitting to a drink and drugs problem, but they're not going to trash Earl's Court. The indignation that inspired Jarvis Cocker and Nobacon simply doesn't fire up the current batch of stars, who also seem to lack the appetite for comedy confrontations such as the off-stage row between So Solid Crew and Westlife a few years ago.

If the BPI wants fireworks, it'll have to resort to nominating alleged enemies Charlotte Church and Girls Aloud - but there's a problem there, too. The pop category has just been dropped (along with rock and urban), apparently because of the dearth of viable candidates. So who's going to supply the big "moment" now?

Some jerk is trying to sell the Mince Spies Cd & 4 Coldplayground fanzines for a ludicrous £1,800! That's like a zero too much! There's no starting bid, that's a buy it nowprice and absolutely unbelievable. He seems to think that it's an investment and the price will go up. I very much doubt it will ever reach this price in value, so please don't think this is a good pension idea.

The Cd has been known to fetch anywhere between £100-200 and the fanzines may reach £10 a piece so the guy is trying to rip someone off to the tune of £1500+.

Ebay is great for finding rarerities but Mince Spies is a remix of Yellow and a radio recorded performance that you can probably get elsewhere. If there was a realistic reserve and an auction I wouldn't be so appalled. There, my rant is over!

While Chris Martin supports Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner, the frontman of the band, isn't so friendly.

In a Serbian Newspaper "Glas javnosti" an article about Artic Monkeys was published yesterday. In the conclusion you could find the following statement by Alex Turner:

"Why should we care about radios and 'round-the-clock moralists? We created our name on the Internet. Both newspaper and radio understood what's happening years after. It's disgusting being a band which plays the same thing all the time and doesn't bother anyone. Like Coldplay. I would commit suicide if I were in Coldplay."

Christina Aguilera has broken the music industry sales drought. Her number one debut with 'Back To Basics' has generated around three times the sales of a number one record has been worth in the last few months.

'Back To Basics' sold around 15,000 units last week in Australia and finished a long way in front of Pink's 'I'm Not Dead' which did around 5800 units.

James Blunt 'Back To Bedlam' is the longest performer in the Top 20 with 56 weeks on the chart and Coldplay can claim the longest charting album in the Top 40 with 'X&Y' hitting 61 weeks on the chart this week.

The good Aguilera result is probably little consolation for a bleeding industry which recorded its all time worst ever number one seller only a week ago when the High School Musical soundtrack topped the honours with just over 5800 sales.

The last month also saw the number one DVD outselling the number one album, a thumping that came from a 10 year old title in Pink Floyd's 'Pulse'.

While the weekly sales figures have been on the nose, certain artists have been having bona -fide hits regardless. The Veronica, Eskimo Joe, James Blunt, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chris Isaak have maintained dominance in the Top 10 ever since their latest albums were released.

The Veronicas is the greatest stayer in the Top 10, clocking up its 44th week and still maintaining a spot at number 8.

The Top 100 album this week from Kelly Clarkson sold just 471 units. To get a Top 40 single in Australia this week, just 341 units would get you there and the Number 100 single was worth just 77 sales.

BBC Radio 1's "Live Lounge" will join the radio-show-compilation ranks when it releases an eponymous double disc set on September 18 in the UK, according to a report from NME.com.

In addition to "Live Lounge" in-studio performances of standards like Outkast's "Ms. Jackson" and Basement Jaxx's "Romeo", the compilation also features a number of covers, including Franz Ferdinand's version of Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For", Embrace's cover of D12's "How Come", and-- just what we all needed-- another cover of "Hey Ya", this time by "Pop Idol" winner Will Young.

One evening last week my friend and I were walking around the West Village when he ran into a friend of his who was talking to Ed the neighborhood homeless guy. Everyone in the W. Village knows Ed, who used to sleep outside Chris and Gwyneth's apartment and who clued me in on their move a couple years ago (which I dutifully posted on this site. Just to remind you all, I had spotted Chris and Gwyneth across the street near their brownstone and just as I did Ed walked by and muttered, 'That's Chris, he's my friend. They're moving on Wednesday.")

So back to last week. Since my friend was talking to his friend, I talked to Ed. We chatted about his new hot pink bike (I offered him some black spray paint, but he likes the pink) and then the conversation turned to celebrities. I mentioned Chris and Gwyneth & asked him what they were like. He said Gwyneth was reserved but Chris was his buddy. "He used to sit with me and talk for a couple hours at a time. We'd just shoot the shit. I had no idea who he was. Months went by and then people started to notice and I said, 'Are you somebody? Should I know you?'"

Anyway, I thought that was a cool story. Obviously Gwyneth landed a super decent guy who took a ton of time to get to know our neighborhood homeless guy.

THE actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, the Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, arrived in Scotland yesterday for the wedding of their daughter Apple’s godfather.

Paltrow, 32, who has starred in Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr Ripley and Sylvia, wore a light pink jacket and dress and appeared relaxed and happy as she carried her 14-month-old daughter into the church.

The toddler, wearing a white dress, almost stole the bride’s thunder as she ran up and down the aisle. The actor Simon Pegg, 35, who appeared in the British horror comedy Shaun of the Dead and Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People, married the East Kilbride-born Maureen McCann, 35, who works in public relations, at St Simon’s Catholic Church in Glasgow’s west end.

Fran Healy and Dougie Payne, from the rock band Travis, and the Little Britain comedian David Walliams were among the many celebrities who attended the 30-minute service.

Other guests included the television actresses Tamzin Outhwaite and Katy Carmichael, and Kelly Macdonald, who shot to fame in the British films Trainspotting and Gosford Park.

Martin’s fellow Coldplay members Guy Berryman and Jonny Buckland, and the stand-up comic Bill Bailey, were also at the service.

About 100 people attended the wedding ceremony, which was delayed by almost an hour when the zip on the bride’s wedding dress burst and had to be mended. The best man Nick Frost calmed Pegg’s nerves and joked with guests that he might have to marry his friend instead.

Speaking to reporters outside the church, Frost said: “I’m really not very nervous because I know I’m organised and I had the rings. It’s great to see the two of them marry.”

The guests celebrated the wedding in Glasgow last night.

VH1 Classic has acquired the exclusive U.S. TV rights to the final episode of the BBC’s long-running music series Top of the Pops, which aired in the U.K. at the end of last month.

The one-hour special features performances by Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Beyonce, Jackson 5, David Bowie, Wham, Sonny & Cher, Coldplay, Robbie Williams and the Spice Girls.

It also includes rare footage never before seen in the U.S. of The Bee Gees, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Cliff Richard, John Lennon, Rod Stewart, ABBA, Status Quo, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Elton John, Frankie, Eurythmics, Bryan Adams, Wet Wet Wet, Bros, Nirvana, Oasis and U2, among others. Many of these artists and bands released first, second or third albums last year, bringing freshness to the airwaves, bodies to the dance floor and real vitality to various strains of rock, pop, rap and soul.

8. Coldplay, “X & Y” (Capitol)

“X & Y” found Coldplay showing real progress in 2005. The album is anthemic and atmospheric in equal parts, recalling the early work of U2 and Echo & the Bunnymen.

1. Antony and the Johnsons, “I am a Bird Now” (Secretly Canadian)

New York-based cabaret singer Antony’s voice proved to be an acquired taste for some in 2005, but there is no mistaking the haunting beauty of “I am a Bird Now.” His choice in collaborators is top-notch as well — Devendra Banhart, Boy George, Rufus Wainwright and Lou Reed all put in guest performances.

2. Low, “The Great Destroyer” (Sub Pop)

Low turned up the volume considerably for their Sub Pop debut, moving beyond the hushed “slowcore” of albums past. Credit goes to producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) for bringing out the Duluth three-piece’s inner rock band.

3. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, “Naturally” (Daptone)

Soul siren Jones and her Dap-Kings tore it up in 2005. “Naturally” is deep funk in the tradition of the JBs, and guaranteed to get the party started.

4. The White Stripes, “Get Behind Me Satan” (V2)

Jack and Meg turned out one of the strangest and most compelling major-label releases of the year in “Get Behind Me Satan.” Bluesy rockers bump up against baroque experiments, giving the record eccentric charm to spare.

5. The City on Film, “In Formal Introduction” (Grand Theft Autumn)

Bob Nanna of Braid and Hey Mercedes fame launched his newest project, The City on Film, during the summer of 2005. The debut LP, “In Formal Introduction,” is a winning and often brooding rumination on life and love in the tradition of Jeff Buckley’s “Grace” and Billy Bragg’s “Back to Basics.”

6. Echo & the Bunnymen, “Siberia” (Cooking Vinyl)

“Siberia” is an especially strong addition to the Bunnymen’s already sturdy canon. Album highlights “In the Margins” and “Scissors in the Sand” bring to mind the sweeping beauty of the Bunnymen at their best, namely the brilliant early releases “Heaven Up Here” and “Ocean Rain.”

7. Amusement Parks on Fire, “Amusement Parks on Fire” (Filter)

Amusement Parks on Fire is a great name for a band. It conjures up images of carousel horses baking in extreme heat; a dozen candy colors melted together; children fleeing in terror. The music on the self-titled debut does the name proud — the perfect soundtrack to carnival nightmares.

9. The Mountain Goats, “The Sunset Tree” (4AD)

“The Sunset Tree” pairs John Darnielle’s quirky, autobiographical lyrics to tasteful arrangements for acoustic guitar, piano and strings, making it one of the finest pieces of indie pop produced in the last year.

10. The Judy Green, “Bird in the Teeth” (Screwtape)

Bird in the Teeth nimbly combines elements of acid folk, underground rock and the darker shades of Americana, making it one of the most auspicious debuts released in 2005.

11. Ester Drang, “Rocinate” (Jade Tree)

Taking aural cues from Brian Eno, Spiritualized and The Flaming Lips, the production on “Rocinate” (credited to Scott Solter) favors atmosphere above all else. Standout cuts like “Come Back Alive,” “Smoke and Air” and “White Lies” positively shimmer with jangly guitars, warm synth lines and the occasional horn or piano part.

12. The Ponys, “Celebration Castle” (In the Red)

The Ponys side-stepped the sophomore slump in 2005 by releasing their stunning second long player, a winning combination of NY punk, British post-punk and ’60s garage.

13. Depeche Mode, “Playing the Angel” (Sire)

With its analog synths and dark lyrics, “Playing the Angel” recalls some of Depeche Mode’s finest moments, namely 1986’s “Black Celebration” and 1990’s “Violator.”

14. Sigur Ros, “Takk…” (Geffen)

Another year brought another gorgeous, other-worldly offering from Iceland’s Sigur Ros. With its woozy atmospherics and lulling production, “Takk…” is the perfect soundtrack to the final moments before sleep comes down.

15. M.I.A., “Arular” (XL)

An exciting mash-up of garage, dancehall and tribal new wave (Bow Wow Wow, Grace Jones, Adam and the Ants), Arular was the dance floor champ in 2005.

16. Gorillaz, “Demon Days” (Virgin)

Damon Albarn & Co. turned in a striking effort in “Demon Days,” ruling the dance floor and airwaves with songs brimming with political unrest, personal crisis and millennial dread.

17. Sleater-Kinney, “The Woods” (Sub Pop)

A noisy, uneasy exploration of a country in crisis, “The Woods” found Sleater-Kinney in fiery form in 2005, more than earning all those Clash comparisons that rock journos are so fond of making.

18. Common, “Be” (Geffen)

“Be” found the former Chicago M.C. hooking up with Kanye West for an informed bit of crate-digging in 2005. 1970s soul informs most of the record, which recalls Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers at their creative peaks.

19. Louis XIV, “The Best Little Secrets are Kept” (Atlantic)

San Diego’s Louis XIV brought the glam in 2005, playing T.Rex-style hard pop with a Stones-like swagger.

20. “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” original soundtrack (Hollywood)

Released at the tail-end of 2004, the soundtrack to Wes Anderson’s spirited “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” brilliantly assembles ’60s avant-pop (David Bowie, The Zombies, Scott Walker), proto-punk/new wave (Iggy & the Stooges, Devo) and Seu Jorge transforming some of the aforementioned Thin White Duke’s best songs into Portuguese lullabies.

Don’t hate Chris Martin because he’s beautiful. Hate him because he’s insanely talented, incredibly successful, and married to a gorgeous movie star.

After all, Martin’s band Coldplay – for which he sings lead vocals – sold over five million copies of their 2000 release “Parachutes,” no small feat considering that was their debut.

Martin comes from humble beginnings, having been raised by a teacher and an accountant, and started out his college career studying ancient history. But everything changed once Martin met Will Champion, Guy Berryman, and Jonny Buckland – three lads with whom he would eventually form Coldplay.But rather than sit on his laurels madly spending cash, Martin uses his free time to promote a variety of important social issues – most notably Make Trade Fair, an organization dedicated to opening up the world’s borders. As for Martin’s personal life, he’s not the sort to behave flamboyantly in public or open up about private matters – but we do know that he’s married to Gwyneth Paltrow, with whom he has one daughter, Apple.

Ever mindful of overexposure, Martin has purposefully kept Coldplay out of the spotlight this year – but look for that to change later this year, which sees the release of the band’s highly anticipated third album.

You've got to hand it to Liam Gallagher and Chris Martin – they just can’t resist acting up for the cameras.

Oasis frontman Liam did his classic mad-fer-it gesture outside a London studio yesterday – while missus Nicole Appleton was busy recording with her All Saints bandmates. Coldplay’s Chris preferred a more direct approach – with his tongue firmly not in cheek – when out for a stroll on the capital’s streets.

Well, they certainly put a smile on my face.

Even though there was no Glastonbury this year, festival season has arrived bearing more offspring than ever before. Indeed, so cluttered is the festival calendar that it’s a wonder that anyone can remember what field they’re meant to be in from one weekend to the next – that’s why I, for one, have taken the radical step of staying at home. Still, I’ve not totally detached myself from the ‘brilliant’ pastime of rolling in six-inch-deep mud while Jools fucking Holland tinkles his ivories on the main stage at lunchtime.

Julian Temple’s Glastonbury film was released earlier this year to great critical acclaim, and DiS has three copies of the movie that’s kept me in the festival loop this summer, as well as its soundtrack, to give away to our readers. Featuring performances from The Velvet Underground, Björk, Radiohead, Coldplay and Billy Bragg, the 138-minute film documents the development of the festival from its roots, laid some 35 years ago, to the glossy, necessarily corporate beast of today.

Canadian singer Nelly Furtado has slammed old rumours she romanced British rocker Chris Martin before he met current-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

The I'm Like A Bird singer was briefly linked to the Coldplay frontman, but insists all they've ever been is friends and work colleagues.She says, "We used to be friends when we were doing our first albums in England. "Everyone thinks that's (the rumours are) true, but no, we were just friends."

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow pities journalists who make up stories about her, claiming they will be punished for their sins.

The Shakespeare In Love star is baffled by the constant fabricated reports about her personal life with husband Chris Martin and children Apple and Moses - but feels sure the perpetrators will get their comeuppance.

She says, "It makes me sad for the people who make it up because karmically, it can't be very good for them. It depresses me to think of people trying to sell papers by dredging up bad things. "People say, 'I read that you're exorcising your house for a ghost and you have a GPS satellite thing in your bag to watch your baby while she's sleeping,' and I think, 'Did you read this in a newspaper?'"

Given its smaller market share, Sony BMG’s hit-rich schedule could be good enough to add to its 24% album market share at the expense of UMG’s 31% share. EMI’s schedule looks as strong as its 9% album share, but a lot is riding on Janet Jackson, whether Coldplay remains on this year’s release schedule and its ability to develop to artists. WMG has some very promising titles that could help it surpass its 16% share but lacks the sure-thing blockbusters that fill UMG and Sony BMG’s schedule. The company is good, though, at scoring left-field hits.

EMI’s schedule has some hits and a few titles with an outside shot at breaking out: Janet Jackson, Coldplay, Beenie Man, Meatloaf, Chingy, Daz Dillinger, R.E.M. (IRS years compilation), Bob Seger, Trace Adkins, Bonnie Raitt, Daz Dillinger, Enigma, Celtic Women and Lenny Kravitz.

Wildcards: The Panic Channel (members of Jane’s Addiction), The Kooks, Sean Lennon, The Decemberists, The Summer Obession, Stacie Orrico, Over It.Indie labels have strong releases and should have a great summer and fall, most noteably Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti, Pitbull, Basement Jaxx, Bright Eyes and Yo La Tengo. Lil’ Jon should have an album out in September but no street date has been announced.

Listening to the reaction of teens who had attended a screening of Oliver Stone’s new “World Trade Center” movie, Paramount Pictures officials decided to make TV ads just for them.

The promos feature music from rock group Coldplay to get their attention, and have a slogan that relates the Sept. 11 terror attacks to their own lives.

“Every generation has a defining moment,” a voiceover in the ads intones. “This was ours,” words on the screen say.The film - opening nationwide tomorrow - recounts the 9/11 rescue of Port Authority Police Officers John McLoughlin and William Jimeno, the last men to come out alive from the Twin Towers’ ruins. It stars Nicolas Cage as McLoughlin and Michael Peña as Jimeno.

Paramount plans to donate 10% of the box-office receipts from tomorrow through Sunday to the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and three other 9/11-related charities.

The gut-wrenching subject matter has Hollywood wondering how big a box-office draw it will be, despite rave reviews. The first 9/11-themed film, “United 93,” rang up U.S. ticket sales of just $31.5 million.

Paramount test-screened “World Trade Center” in Minneapolis. Later, teens at a focus group spoke about their sense of personal connection to the movie. One girl used the phrase “defining moment” to describe 9/11.

“They said it was the most significant event of their lifetimes,” Gerry Rich, Paramount’s president of worldwide marketing, told the Daily News.

He kept TV commercials that were already in the can, but asked for new ones to make the movie’s $35 million marketing campaign more relevant to teens.

Rich and his colleagues listened to more than 200 music samples to find something that would sound right for a commercial airing on MTV. And the music had to be “respectful, yet insinuate hope, optimism and emotion,” he said.

They picked a snippet of melody from Coldplay’s song “Fix You,” which ends with the words, “Lights will guide you home.”

In contrast, the ads written for general audiences use orchestral music as background.

But they pack an emotional wallop anyway - with a rapid-fire barrage of dramatic moments.

Visually, the two spots also have notable differences. The teen-focused one includes an image of a trapped Officer Jimeno scribbling “I U” on a scrap of paper.

It also offers quick images of intimate moments with the wives.

The general audience ad contains a more complete linear recounting of the entire plot in 30 seconds.

Both kinds of commercials run on a broad array of broadcast and cable channels - though Paramount’s being careful to keep them off prime-time shows that younger children watch, and Saturday-morning kiddie programs.

Also, Paramount nixed billboards and other outdoor ads in the metro area - as well as Washington, where the Pentagon was attacked, and Boston, where doomed flights took off.

“It’s not just an ordinary movie,” Rich said. “We’re trying to be sensitive to the families, and people who were affected by the day.”

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed to friends that it’s not been all sunshine and joy since the birth of her son Moses in April.

For a start, Gwyneth and husband Chris Martin’s first child, daughter Apple, has not taken well to the arrival of her baby brother. Gwyneth was overheard telling friends that Apple is jealous of her younger sibling: “She’s fine but suddenly there’s another baby and everyone is talking about him and looking at him and she doesn’t really understand why.”

Gwyneth also added that she “didn’t think” she’d be having any more children: “It is such a lot of work. And I’ve been breastfeeding, which has been causing me problems. My breasts feel so sore.”And if the reality of motherhood wasn’t enough, Gwyneth revealed to the friends that she was considering having cosmetic surgery to polish up her figure because she’s had problems losing her pregnancy weight this time around. She told the group: “My stomach is rippling, my breasts don’t feel good. I’ve been trying to work out. I want to do something about it.”

The friends, who were lunching with Paltrow at a north London pub, were understanding and suggested Gwyneth travel to New York for the operation so she wouldn’t be spotted going into hospital in her new hometown of London.

Thousands of people crowded into Bitts Park in Carlisle yesterday for pop2thepark headlined by the Sugababes and G4.

The crowd cheered, danced and partied away to the support bands before the main stars came on stage after 4pm.

Next up was G4 who played Carlisle’s Sands Centre last year. Sporting jeans and black shirts the classic quartet burst into Elton John’s song Circle of Life. They also played Coldplay’s Yellow, and Frank Sinatra’s My Way and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
