I went to the Isle of Wight festival over the weekend and, maybe it was the heat, but as I stood there watching Coldplay, a thought occurred to me: is Chris Martin the new Elvis Presley? Let me qualify that.

Elvis was as much known for his magnetic personality and on-stage shenanigans as he was his incredible voice. You could not watch him perform without feeling immense affection for the cat-suited crooner as he leapt about the stage throwing karate chops and crooked high-kicks. He was quite amazingly personable.

Chris Martin has a similar ability. He is almost unique in his ability to interact effortlessly with the crowd and frequently engages, inbetween songs, in genuinely amusing, ad-libbed repartee rarely seen elsewhere.

So he may write a good song. He may hold a top tune. He may even play a range of instruments. But more, much more than that, is the good-natured warmth he radiates. And, in that, hey, one for the money, two for the show... he does it Elvis's way.

Little Moses Martin (born April 8) is one lucky guy: He gets a front-row seat for solo lullaby performances by his dad, singer Chris Martin.

In fact, both the Coldplay frontman (who's one of five kids) and wife Gwyneth Paltrow are "both very, very hands-on parents," says Rachel Waddilove, their 2-year-old daughter Apple's former nanny.

A Richard Nicholl shirt dress. He's a great new designer that we are championing in the shop. At the moment, due to my bump, it's not quite long enough to wear as a dress, hence these M&S city shorts underneath. I bought them before pregnancy but they still just about fit if I don't fasten the top button. My belt is by Camilla Staerk and my locket necklace is by Bing Bang. These Rupert Sanderson court shoes are my pièce de la resistance.

Heels and pregnancy, how is that?

Absolutely fine. These are as high as I can go and I always pack flat pumps in my bag so I can do a little swap. These are fine for 30-minute stints.

Coldplay is taking its "Twisted Logic" Tour Down Under next week.

The band's sold-out Australian tour in support of the its latest album "X&Y" kicks off next Friday, June 23rd, with a two-night stand in Brisbane. The outing wraps up July 7th in Perth.

A few days later, Coldplay completes the final leg of the Twisted Logic Tour with six shows in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.This past weekend, Coldplay made a triumphant to England when they played the Isle of Wight Festival. According to the band's official website, Coldplay's set was similar to the Twisted Logic tour, with a few changes thrown in the mix, including a cover of the Lou Reed classic "Perfect Day."

‘Thank you everyone for waiting for us’ are Chris Martin’s first words to the already fired-up Nokia Isle of Wight Festival revellers. Clearly, most people are actually here to see this English world-wide sensation anyway. But Chris and the other members in Coldplay don’t care. They know where they’re from and they also know who got them where they are right now; at the pinnacle of musical superstardom.

This is the culmination of three days of music in the sun – a festival experience you normally wouldn’t dare dream of in this country. No mud, no rain, lots of lobster-tinged punters who didn’t think suncream was a staple for a festival over here.

There’s no big fuss. Coldplay take to he stage, the audience is ready – flags bearing the band’s latest album’s title, ‘X&Y’ are being held up and pig and horse shaped balloons floating are off into the near night sky. And the odd inflatable ‘air guitar’, too. If you can spot a pair of available shoulders, now is the time to claim them and salute the boys on stage.

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has lashed out at Coldplay singer Chris Martin for disguising his posh accent to endear himself to fans.

The English trio are proud to be some of the few middle-class musicians in the mainly working-class rock scene, and refuse to alter their speech to appear more 'common'.

Chaplin says, "I remember seeing Chris Martin on television, and thinking, if I ever get on TV, I'm not going to start dropping my Ts and Gs. It would be like cutting out a piece of who you are just to please other people."

Supermodel Kate Moss and pop group Coldplay have pledged their support to a safety charity set up in memory of a British woman murdered in Japan.

Moss has recorded a message for The Lucie Blackman Trust and has been seen wearing a purple wristband in support of the charity, which gives advice to young people on how to stay safe at home and abroad. Coldplay dedicated a song to the charity at the Isle of Wight Festival.

The Trust was set up after Ms Blackman, a former flight attendant from Sevenoaks in Kent, vanished while working as a hostess in a nightclub in the Roppongi district of Tokyo in July 2000. Her dismembered body was found in a cave in Miura, a remote and secluded fishing village outside the city, in February 2001, after a seven-month search. Japanese businessman Joji Obara has been charged with murdering the 21-year-old and is currently on trial in a lengthy case being held in Tokyo.

Ms Blackman's father Tim Blackman, from the Isle of Wight, set up the Trust to provide an internet service which allows young people to arrange for a delayed mobile phone text message to be sent. The message raises the alarm if the person does not cancel it in time.

During last weekend's Nokia Isle of Wight Festival, Moss recorded a short video message saying: "Hi, I'm Kate Moss. Please stay safe and visit The Lucie Blackman Trust website."

Later, at the climax of the three-day event in Newport, Chris Martin of Coldplay dedicated the song Talk to the cause. Martin has been a regular supporter of the charity after meeting Lucie's father on a plane to Japan, when Mr Blackman was travelling to attend the Obara court case.

Mr Blackman said: "The aim of the video messages are to persuade young people to consider their personal safety when travelling.

"By asking people they respect to deliver that message it will hopefully have a stronger effect. With half a million youngsters heading off on a gap year shortly, it's important we use any method we can."

Other artists who have recorded messages for the charity's website, www.lucieblackmantrust.org, were Goldfrapp, The Kooks, Suzanne Vega and The Rakes.

Richard Ashcroft arrived by helicopter for his terrific set after enjoying the British Grand Prix. His dramatic entry surprised the crowd but not Richard - who had a premonition of his jet-set day while sharing a steam room with Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman.

Ditch the aviator shades and backwards baseball cap, Chris Martin - they're not cool and they're not clever. The Coldplay frontman and wife Gwyneth Paltrow went on stage to watch Ashcroft and Lou Reed.

Foul-mouthed stars nearly had their booze taken away. The sensitive souls running the backstage Artists' Bar threatened to close it down for bad language. They whined to organisers it was supposed to be a "family" environment. Rock and fucking roll!

Chris Martin thinks Peter Crouch could be responsible for Coldplay's first ever number one hit.

He has said that if England win the World Cup, he will write a song especially for the lanky striker. And Chris had a treat in store for his fans at the Isle of Wight festival last night - he did the Crouch robot dance live on stage.

Chris, who is married to screen siren Gwyneth Paltrow, has already written some special words for the beanpole footballer. The curly-haired singer incorporated the lyrics Get up off your sofa / Get up off your couch / Forget what you're doing / And do the Crouch! into the song Don't Panic, much to the delight of Coldplay and football fans.

Coldplay on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien' June 12.

Coldplay visits "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" tonight, June 12th. During this repeat episode, Coldplay performs a song off its latest album "X&Y." Other guests on Monday's program include Lindsay Lohan and Colin Hanks.

Coldplay have performed their only British concert of 2006, bringing the Isle of Wight Festival to a close.

The band played a crowd-pleasing set for almost 60,000 people, who had also been entertained by The Prodigy and the Foo Fighters during the weekend. The Download Festival, headlined by Guns n' Roses, also drew to a close. But rock band Korn played without their frontman Jonathan Davis on Saturday after he was taken to hospital.

The festival at Donnington Park, Leicestershire, said he was "unwell" and his place was taken by singers from other bands.Metallica and Tool were among the other rock stars on the Download line-up. Both events enjoyed scorching weather for the first big weekend of the UK's summer music festival calendar.Coldplay received one of the best receptions of the weekend at the Isle of Wight, playing songs from their three albums plus a cover of Lou Reed's Perfect Day. Chris Martin told the crowd they would release a single called Do the Crouch if England did well at the World Cup - before performing Peter Crouch's robotic dance. He also invited a young blonde woman to sit on the stage and sip champagne for two songs as "crowd member of the year".

The band, who had the world's best-selling album of 2005, are about to embark on a tour of Australia and Japan. Richard Ashcroft, Lou Reed and Maximo Park also entertained crowds at the Isle of Wight on Sunday. The festival has been growing steadily since it re-started in 2002. But organiser John Giddings said it would not expand any further.

"I don't want to make it any bigger," he said. "I could make it bigger but I think that's just more aggravation. I just want to make it a really enjoyable event on the music calendar. We're not looking to compete with Glastonbury. I think we're the warm-up for Glastonbury. I don't want a huge event. I want something that's cool, nice, sophisticated, enjoyable. I don't want it too crowded."

On Sunday morning, a police spokesman said: "The crowd have been very well behaved with only a few arrests for minor offences. The majority of the crowd are a real cross-section of people, which makes it a very family orientated event which has been very well run and very well enjoyed by all."

Foo Fighters headlined the second night of the Nokia Isle Of Wight Festival this evening (June 10).

Dave Grohl led his band through a ear-shattering set that included monster rockers like 'Times Like These', 'DOA' and 'In Your Honour'.

Grohl, who had earlier watched performances by Editors and The Kooks was up for some inter-band banter with the other bands on the bill, jokingly taking on Primal Scream during his band's set. "There was some fine music on here today," Grohl told the crowd before playing 'Stacked Actors'. "Before we came on I went down to Primal Scream's dressing room to wish them luck. Mani said to me 'Good luck going on after us'. Well bro it's going on, this one goes out to those guys."Earlier Editors enhanced their live reputation with an assured and imaginative set.

Including 'Munich', 'Blood' and 'All Sparks', the band surprised fans by including new song 'Bones', reworking b-side 'You Are Fading' and covering Talking Heads' 'Road To Nowhere'.

"It's was a really interesting experience for us," said guitarist Chris Urbanowicz. "It's probably the most people we've ever played to in one place before.

They were then followed by Primal Scream who were introduced on stage by model Kate Moss.

Mixing tracks from their new album 'Riot City Blues' including 'Country Girl' and 'Suicide Sally And Johnny Guitar', the band also played firm favourites 'Rocks', 'Kill All Hippies' and 'Moving On Up'.

"You all right Isle Of Wight?" bassist Mani asked the crowd midway through his band's set. "You having a good time? Anyone got any drugs?"

The Nokia Isle Of Wight Festival continues tomorrow with Coldplay set to headline.

After a year of Brokeback this and Brokeback that, it seems like it's finally ok for hetero guys to bond again. In that vein, mates Chris Martin of Coldplay and Danny McNamara of Embrace recently gave each other manly slaps on the bum back.

First up, Martin endorsed Embrace's World Cup tune for England that had been scorned by others, including Richard Ashcroft and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness. McNamara basked in Martin's compliments:

"Chris likes it. I played it to him yesterday, actually. He'd already heard it because I'd sung it to him down the phone a while back, and he remembered it word for word, which is pretty cool. I suppose that means it's good to sing along to."McNamara returned the compliment right back to Martin. Some people have said Chris is a tad doltish. Not so says Danny:

"The perception of Chris is so far from the truth, it's hilarious. People think he's dull but he's the most exciting man I've ever met."

Very nice to see this kind of commradarie. Maybe these lads should take a camping trip....

Nelly Furtado has hailed Coldplay star Chris Martin for his impromptu songwriting skills, after he conjured a song out of nowhere for her new album Loose.

The pair joined forces to record the track All Good Things, which now features on the release as a solo number after Martin's voice was deemed too "rocky". But Furtado will never forget how the Clocks singer worked his magic on her disc - even though he insists his contribution was "shit".

"After we'd recorded it I asked him, 'Did you write that just now?' "And he said, 'Yes, of course - that's why it's shit.' He's so completely unaware of how great he is. So very humble."

More than 30,000 music fans will be heading to the Isle of Wight for its annual music festival this weekend with crowd pleasers Coldplay and Foo Fighters taking top billing.

Former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed, controversial dance group The Prodigy and Primal Scream are among the main acts taking part in the three-day event.

Also included in the line-up are Dirty Pretty Things, the new band set up by Carl Barat following the split of The Libertines after badboy rocker Pete Doherty was thrown out of the group.This year’s event is the fifth since the festival was relaunched 30 years after its heyday when it attracted up to one million people to the island.

The Isle of Wight festivals at the end of the 1960s were a series of legendary events featuring Bob Dylan, The Who, Free, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane and culminating in 1970 with 600,000 hippies descending on the island to see Jimi Hendrix perform his penultimate concert.

Since restarting the festival, world-renowned acts such as The Who, David Bowie, Robert Plant and REM have played. Ben Jones, DJ for Virgin Radio which is broadcasting this year’s sold out event, said the festival reawakened memories of the infamous 1960s festivals.

He said: “Glastonbury gets the credit for being the best UK festival, but if you go back to the original festivals then it was the Isle of Wight that people remember – it is immersed in rock ’n’ roll history. But English festivals are now synonymous with summertime as much as strawberries and cream – it's what we do and we are doing it more and more.”
