Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Aniston have teamed up to dismiss rumours that the talk-show host and media magnate is going to stage a wedding for the former 'Friends' star.

Winfrey invited Aniston [pictured], rumoured to be close to tying the knot with fellow actor Vince Vaughn, to call into her show to mock media reports about the nuptials.

According to reports, Winfrey was going to throw an $8-million reception, featuring performances by Coldplay and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, at her Santa Barbara estate.During the telephone chat, aired yesterday, Aniston said: "It sounds like you're giving me Santa Barbara."

The former wife of Brad Pitt also ridiculed reports that she and Vaughn are house hunting. "I'm really good, I've got my house," said Aniston.

Winfrey had some ridiculing of her own to do. Recent reports have speculated she and long-time boyfriend Steadman Graham have split. Tabloid pictures showing the media mogul dropping Graham off at an airport purportedly proved the separation. "The photo they have, I was asking him: 'Are you sure you have your ticket?' but it said I was very angry that 'the tension between us could be felt by everyone in the vicinity'."

"If we ever do [break-up]," she told fans, "I promise, I promise the night it happens, if it ever happens, I will come on TV the next day and tell you."

During a recent sit-down with ChartAttack prior to his opening gig for Coldplay at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, Ashcroft rattled off a host of songs by Al Green, Marvin Gaye and The Beatles as part of his own personal pop vanguard.

“I was saying to Chris Martin that the difficulty with us [as musicians] is that we are, essentially, just painters. But unlike most painters, we have to keep looking back at our work all the time and hear it reflected back to ourselves. Whereas normally, you finish a canvas and ‘Fuck! It’s gone.’

“This game is all about survival, and it’s not about this one song, or these 10 songs I’ve written. I’m writing music all the time in my head when I’m walking down the street. I’ve been doing it for 17 years, whether I’ve been making a record or not. Music is my survival.”

Greenhouse-gas emissions are clogging up the atmosphere. Children are forced to work in mines using dangerous machinery. Tomatoes are being modified to look more tomatoey.

One night you get fed up. You can't just watch everything go down the tubes. It's time to take a stand; every choice you make tomorrow will be environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

It's a very chic goal. Coldplay's Chris Martin would be proud. His band is featured on Sound Environment, two CDs whose proceeds go partly to the World Wildlife Fund. If Margaret Atwood knew about your goal, she might pat you on the back. Atwood has spoken publicly about the need for developers to build environmentally friendly communities.

But will it make any impact? You're just one person.

That's true, of course, but your decisions can be like a ripple in a pond. If you buy an energy-efficient car, you're not only saving fuel, says John Bennett, the Sierra Club of Canada's senior policy advisor on energy; you're also encouraging manufacturers to make more energy-efficient vehicles, and you're showing friends that a fuel-saving automobile is a viable option.

Plus, says Bennett, you're pressuring politicians to put more environmentally friendly regulations in place: Legislators are more likely to take on manufacturers if they feel there's public support.

So individuals can make a difference. Every single day.

You resolve to start the next morning, and firm up your commitment by going to bed wearing your new organic hemp-flax pajamas and clutching a copy of Greenpeace: The Inside Story.

7:15 a.m. The alarm clock goes off. Is it battery-powered or electrical? Many batteries contain mercury. When mercury is released into the atmosphere, it can be converted into the more toxic methylmercury, which accumulates in fish, according to Environment Canada.

As methylmercury goes up the food chain, it gets more concentrated. Among its risks, methylmercury can harm children's neurological development. You decide to junk your battery-powered clock (taking the batteries to a safe-disposal site, of course) and buy an electric model that day.

But electricity isn't much better if it comes from a coal-fired plant lacking adequate mercury controls, says Pollution Probe's executive director, Ken Ogilvie. Bullfrog Power, meanwhile, offers Ontario residents green electricity from wind and water. You sign up online, thrilled that tomorrow when your alarm clock goes off it won't hurt fish or pollute the air.

Now that you're up, you shuffle to the bathroom to pee. Do you use regular toilet paper or recycled? The latter, of course — saving trees one whiz at a time.

An equally life-changing question: to flush or not to flush? Canadians are among the highest water users in the world. That's partly because water is so cheap here, Ogilvie says.

You don't want to be a poster child for water waste, but not flushing grosses you out. There is another path: Most toilets use 13 litres of water per flush, but some models use only six, says Canadian Tire spokesperson Maeve Burke.

You have your period. Do you use regular tampons or pesticide-free organic tampons or reusable cotton pads or the tiny plastic cup known as the Keeper? You want the world to be a better place, but you're nervous about trying new products. You stick to organic tampons.

Now you need to wash your hands — but with what kind of soap? Regular or biodegradable and pesticide-free? Did you have to ask? No one wants to increase the world's store of pesticides, and soap that breaks down is vastly preferable to soap that just sits in the water.

7:30 a.m. You're still feeling groggy. A shower would wake you up, but you panic, unsure if a bath is better for the environment. It depends on how long you shower for and if you have a water-conserving showerhead.

What temperature should the water be? "It takes energy to heat water," Ogilvie says. A cooler shower is more energy-efficient than one that's "blasting hot." You turn the faucet to lukewarm and step in.

What kind of shampoo? A conventional brand may contain petroleum-based products that are difficult to filter out of wastewater. But there are many petroleum-free, biodegradable options on the market. You pour some on your head while singing Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come."

It's time to deal with dental plaque. You grab a tube of biodegradable toothpaste. Of course, you don't leave the water running while brushing your teeth. Only a planet-hating amateur would do that.

7:45 a.m. At last, you're ready to go to the kitchen and make breakfast. Coffee and toast with eggs.

But is the coffee fair-trade?

Some coffee farmers in countries like Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are forced to sell their coffee beans to middlemen at prices lower than the cost of production. That creates a cycle of poverty by requiring farmers to rely on loans to produce next year's crop.

By contrast, the coffee in your mug is made with fair-trade beans, which means they came from a co-operative of farmers with direct access to the market, who can thus sell their beans at a fair price. Toronto is dotted with shops that sell fair-trade coffee, teas and chocolate.

Now that you're caffeinated, you poach two organic, free-range eggs (frying them wouldn't harm the environment, unless you have a Teflon pan — see below). For seasoning, you sprinkle some dill from your mini-indoor greenhouse.

In the summer, you'll plant the dill in the ground outside. You wouldn't even consider adding pesticides. Pesticides can wash off gardens into the Don and Humber rivers, which would then funnel them into Toronto's source of drinking water: Lake Ontario.

While poaching the eggs, you put a piece of organic 12-grain bread into the toaster. No pesticides were used growing that grain, you think to yourself happily as you settle down to eat.

8 a.m. After putting your dishes in the sink, you wonder what to wash them with. Most cleaning products don't have ingredients lists, says Rob Grand, owner of Grassroots environmental products. But many soaps contain chlorine and dyes. To be on the safe side, you use dish soap made from corn and coconut oils.

8:15 a.m. You head back to the bedroom to get dressed. Not an easy task if you want to clad yourself responsibly. Often clothes are made in sweatshops overseas where staff are underpaid and prevented from unionizing. Finding out the conditions of workers isn't easy. You promise yourself to ask more questions the next time you buy a T-shirt.

Most of your wardrobe is cotton. Cotton is one of the most polluting crops in the world, according to the Pesticide Action Network North America.

Guilted out of wearing designer garb, you pull on a pair of organic cotton underwear. You check yourself out in the mirror. Yup, still sexy, even in organic fibre.

You put on an organic-cotton red top and organic-cotton khaki pants. For socks, you wear a pair made mostly of wool and recycled polyester. You look for a pair of shoes. That's a tough one, because shoes are often made with glues and dyes that can be harmful to the environment. You put on your scuffed-up boots but promise to look for ones made from recycled rubber next year.

You grab a rain jacket — but which one? You've heard that a chemical in Teflon is also linked to waterproof clothing. A quick excursion onto the Internet tells you that Delaware-based Dupont Co., which owns the Teflon brand, is the North American manufacturer of perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA.

The chemical is used primarily to produce its salts, which are needed to make polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a chemical that's used not only to give cookware a non-stick surface, but also to make fabrics water-resistant. You're a bit queasy about the link between your coat and a frying pan, and you've already made the point of poaching your eggs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began investigating PFOA in 2000 after it was found in the blood of the general population throughout the United States. Media sources recently reported that a board of scientific advisers to the EPA voted to approve a recommendation that PFOA be considered "a likely carcinogen." At the present time, the EPA "does not believe there is any reason for consumers to stop using" products that contain this chemical.

That doesn't make you feel any better. You're slightly afraid of your raincoat.

And what about the fabrics used for coats? At least you have a solution here. You pull on a jacket made entirely from recycled polyester.

8:30 a.m. Time to head for work. You grab your briefcase and close the front door. As you lock it, you wonder if the company that provided the trees for it replaced the ones it had chopped down.

You vow when you buy a house the front door will come from Ecoitaly. The Ossington Ave. store stocks a line of upscale Italian doors made of 95 per cent recycled wood.

In the meantime, you notice the paint on the door is chipping. You think, I should strip off the old paint this weekend and repaint. After all, first impressions matter. Good thing you've stocked up on a chloride-free paint stripper that is also biodegradable.

Paints often release low-level toxic emissions because of volatile organic compounds, which until recently were considered a necessary component of the paint. This weekend you will pick up some non-VOC paint and spruce up that front door.

You vow that when you buy a home you will install cabinets made from wheat board, a straw waste product. Your kitchen walls will have tiles made from recycled glass. Your wooden floors, bookshelves and computer table will be made by companies that believe in replanting the forests they take lumber from.

8:35 a.m. Twenty-five minutes until you have to be at your office on the other side of the city. It's too far to walk or bike. How do you get there?

A transit rider creates 65 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than a car user for the same trip, according to a paper by the Canadian Urban Transit Association.

But your work is in an area where public transportation isn't quite up to snuff. Carpooling may be the better way.

"It allows people to share the cost of gas but also cut their emissions at least in half," says Ryan Lanyon, project director of Smart Commute, a partnership between the cities and regions of the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton, with funding from Transport Canada.

Smart Commute runs the Carpool Zone, an online program on which people can register for free to find carpooling partners. Since the launch in November, almost 1,500 people have signed up.

You're one of them. You found a guy named Fred who lives two blocks away and works in the same office complex as you.

Which type of car do you drive?

Yours is a one of the new hybrids, which has a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The electric one is used when the car is moving at 40 kilometres per hour or less. At 41 kilometres per hour, it flips to gasoline. When a hybrid car uses the electric motor, it creates zero emissions, says Andy Acho, Ford's worldwide director of environmental outreach and strategy.

Other companies that manufacture hybrid vehicles include Honda and Toyota.

8:40 a.m. You pick up Fred. En route to the office, you try to drive the car slower than 41 km an hour. With the traffic on the highways, it's easy. Once you've arrived, you say goodbye to Fred in the lobby (no elevator for you) and walk up to your fourth-floor office.

Did you leave your conscience in the parking lot? Well, it is possible to encourage employers to make sustainable and ethical choices. The Toronto Catholic District School Board passed a "sweatshop-free uniform policy" last month.

But many people work for huge corporations where it's difficult to know if the company's suppliers are environmentally friendly or pay their staff fairly. You likely can't have any impact on the company's purchases. Would you go on strike if your employer refused to put recycled paper towels in the washroom?

Though finding a job that matches your green goals may be too hard, investing isn't. Around noon, you get a call from a financial adviser suggesting you invest in oil stocks. Some oil companies, such as Shell, have publicly discussed the importance of cutting greenhouse gases. Others won't acknowledge that burning fossil fuels affects the environment.

You tell your adviser to buy mutual funds from one of the few companies that evaluates firms not only financially, but also ethically — how they treat the environment and their employees.

5 p.m. Finally, the workday is over. On the way home, you make Fred wait while you stop at an organic grocery store and pick up some pesticide-free chicken, romaine lettuce, pears and baby food (your sister and her four-month-old are coming for dinner). Feeling good that your groceries won't further taint your body or your guests', or Toronto's drinking water, you drop off Fred and head for home.

5:30 p.m. Time to start cooking. In order to conserve energy, you don't use the fan over your stove, opening all the windows instead. And you sauté the chicken in a cast-iron pan, having safely disposed of your Teflon-coated skillet.

6:15 p.m. Your sister and her daughter arrive. As you eat dinner you tell her about your conversion to green living. She looks at you like you're crazy but says the meal is excellent. After eating, you serve fair-trade organic green tea. Your sister changes Sarah's diaper in the washroom. She puts the used diaper in the green bin to be recycled into compost.

Two hours later they leave and you go online to check out which protests are happening this week. You scan the events calendar of the Toronto Women's Bookstore, Activist magazine and rabble.ca.

9 p.m. You switch on the TV to watch CBC's The National. It pleases you to support public broadcasting, even if Peter Mansbridge isn't as hot as some of the CNN anchors.

10 p.m. You climb into bed. It's been a long day. You're exhausted from all those decisions but at peace knowing your choices may in some small way help make the world less scary. Plus, it will impress the hell out of your date tomorrow night, an avid outdoorsman. You're meeting him at an organic restaurant. You'll be walking there, of course.

Gwyneth Paltrow beams with pride as she shows off newborn son Moses, the Mirror reports today.

The smiling actress cradled the six-day-old baby as they left New York's private Mount Sinai Hospital at the weekend. But little Moses wearing a pair of cute blue bootees and snuggled in a white shawl - slept through it all. Gwyneth, 33, and husband Chris Martin, below, gave the tot his unusual name after the title of a love song the Coldplay frontman wrote about her. It includes the line: "Like Moses had power over the sea, so you've got power over me."

Two years ago, the couple called their first child Apple. Gwyneth said at the time she liked the name because it was "clean, wholesome and biblical".

The Irish band U2 has given Britain its favourite song lyric, according to a survey released today. The line "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers" from the 1992 song One topped a poll conducted by music channel VH1.

Runner-up was the downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" from The Smiths' How Soon is Now. A line from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit -- "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us" -- came third. Bob Marley's Redemption Song and Coldplay's Yellow took fourth and fifth places. The Top 10 was a mix of the affirmative and the acerbic, ranging from Robbie Williams' uplifting Angels -- "And through it all she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection, whether I'm right or wrong" -- to Radiohead's sour Creep.

More than 13,000 people participated in the poll on the station's website, choosing from a list of 100 lyrics selected by music industry figures.

Singer Nerina Pallot is headed for hits at the age of 30 - but says she'll be snubbed by bigger acts for slagging them off.

Nerina's first single from new album Fires - Everybody's Gone To War - seems set to be a hit. She has compared Coldplay's lyrics to "bad A-level poetry" and slated Green Day and Live8. She said: "I always think I'm the arbiter of good taste, so you have to take me with a pinch of salt."

Her album - out May 22, the same day she plays Edinburgh's Liquid Room - is already winning rave reviews.

Bob Geldof has been voted the best celebrity dad in an online poll.

The Boomtown Rats singer turned Live Aid campaigner – father to Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches and Pixie – gained 23 per cent of votes. He has been praised in the past for adopting the child of his ex-wife Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence after they died.

David Beckham came a close second in the vote with 20 per cent, while dad-of-two Jamie Oliver came third on 17 per cent. The poll was carried out by remind4u.com, a service which can remind users of important gifts and send out cards and presents.

There are certain things in life that stay with you for the rest of your days. No matter how far you get away from them, the moment you encounter items intractably connected with them, that's it: you're thrown back decades as memories come flooding back. I had such a moment late last year; while Proust had his Madeleine bun, I had an advert. I had my back to the telly, but the music - a full orchestra intoning great dark chords - was enough. "Dah Dah Dah! Dah Dah Dah!" A mixture of terror and excitement worked its way up my back, and on the screen a 19th-century typescript spelled out what I already knew: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds was being re-issued.

This month Jeff Wayne and his 53-piece orchestra tour the UK with a stage version of the album, visiting terror upon tens of thousands of twenty- and thirtysomethings, now ready to face up to their fears. For anyone who thinks I'm overstating the case for the record's continuing importance, consider this: when re-released last year, it was only held off the number one slot by Coldplay's X&Y [pictured] due to a distribution glitch. This quote from Britain's Maxim magazine was a bit of a surprise. Turns out Noel Gallagher thinks Radiohead are now more important than Oasis.

The Oasis guitarist has conceded the albums released by Radiohead have surpassed anything his group have released. Noel also believes Coldplay could yet match the achievements of him and brother Liam.

Noel Gallagher said: "I think I could have said, without any argument, till the year 2000 Oasis were the most important British band since The Beatles. But I think Radiohead have been important and I think Coldplay may yet turn out to be important but not so much now."

Up to 59,999 people, including artists and staff, will be able to attend the event at Seaclose Park on June 9, 10 and 11.

Headlined by The Prodigy, Foo Fighters and Coldplay, organisers said they expected to sell around 50,000 tickets.

Following concerns from some residents about noise, anti-social behaviour and drink-related crime, organiser John Giddings agreed to end the event at 1am on Monday, June 12, not 2am as initially applied for. He also agreed to a condition banning alcohol sales in the main arena after the live music had finished.On Friday and Saturday recorded music and alcohol sales will be allowed until 2am on other parts of the site, which organisers said they hoped would reduce the large number of people leaving the site after the live acts finished.

That will be at 11pm on Friday, midnight on Saturday and 11pm on Sunday.

Noise monitors will be placed around the site in an attempt to limit the impact on residential areas and the council will have the power to stop performances if noise levels exceed agreed levels.

Fairlee resident and IW Council member for Pan Geoff Lumley raised concerns about the increase in numbers of people attending, from around 40,000 last year to a potential 60,000 this year.

However, Mr Giddings argued that the increase in the numbers of people attending was matched by an increase in the size of the site, which now incorporated a second Medina High School sports field.

"If you want to attract international artists of this calibre, then you have to pay them, so by definition you need that many people," he said.

Following concerns raised about security by one Fairlee resident, who told the meeting her home had been broken into during one festival, Mr Giddings said he hoped police would concentrate more resources on protecting people outside the site this year.

"The police are the only people that I know who you can pay tens of thousands of pounds to for a service and you do not have a say in what they do.

"Residents should be protected. The only way this festival will be sustainable is if the urban area which surrounds it is properly protected by the police," said Mr Giddings.

After the meeting he said he was very, very happy at the council's decision to grant a licence.

He added: "We know that we need to pay particular attention to the residents of Fairlee Road and we will do that."

Member for Fairlee Cllr Dawn Cousins, who under licensing rules was unable to speak at the meeting, later said she would continue to tackle any problems faced by residents.

Council leader Andy Sutton said the event had helped to introduce the Island to a new generation of visitors.

"With events like this, we are changing the profile of tourism and giving the Island an international status," he added.

During Coldplay’s lengthy hiatus to record ‘X&Y’ there emerged a slew of bands that, if we’re being charitable, felt inspired enough by ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’s potent blend of pianos, yearning vocals and communal choruses to get out and make their own music.

Though if we’re being cynical, record companies saw a gap in the market and thought “Money, we like it’s smell…” So you had the likes of Thirteen Senses (vaguely political, zero record sales!), Keane (look, no guitars!) and Embrace (Martin who?!), all vying for the coveted ‘Music for BBC Sport Highlights’ slot.

And there, somewhere in the middle, were arguably the most, er, interesting of the lot: Snow Patrol. Perennial indie-underachievers with a neat line in quirky, lovably scruffed albums one minute; the nation’s favourite new lighters-aloft band the next, they’ve had a remarkable last few years by anyone’s standards. Their long-awaited comeback begins tonight.

Just in time for Passover, the world has a new Moses. Moses Martin, the first-born son of actress Gwyneth Paltrow, was delivered in a New York City hospital over the weekend, Paltrow's publicist reported Monday. No other information was provided about the 33-year-old Oscar winner or her new baby boy, but fans suggested that his name had been taken from a song written by Paltrow's husband, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin.

"Moses," which appeared on the band's Live 2003 album, was reportedly written by Martin as tribute to his wife's father, Bruce Paltrow, the well-known television producer who died in the fall of 2002. Paltrow has spoken repeatedly in the intervening years about her despair following her father's death, and the song includes the line, "Like Moses has power over the sea, so you've got power over me." A 1999 Oscar winner for her role in Shakespeare in Love, Paltrow is closely associated with characters defined by their regal bearing and high society background. But the actress, a former model for companies like Dior and Estee Lauder, has also happily discussed the Russian Jewish heritage she received from her father. The Proof star joked earlier this year in England's Guardian newspaper that her lineage included "like, 17 generations of rabbis - you see, I really am a Jewish princess!"

A close personal friend of pop singer Madonna, Paltrow has also been the subject of rumors suggesting she had adopted her friend's well-publicized interest in kabbala. In January, a spokesperson for the actress denied reports that Paltrow had called a rabbi to perform a spiritual cleansing of her home, which she allegedly believed was "haunted."

Should baby Moses eventually find himself the target of schoolyard taunts inspired by his uncommon first name, he'll have an ally in his older sister, Apple. (Full name: Apple Blythe Alison Martin.) Following Apple's birth, Paltrow told US talk show host Oprah Winfrey she didn't understand the bemused public response to her daughter's name, saying it was "lovely and clean" and carried biblical associations.

The actress appears not to have been slowed down professionally by her recent pregnancy. The Oscar winner has an impressive six films scheduled for release by the end of this year.

Kylie Minogue could headline next year's Glastonbury festival, event organiser Michael Eavis has said.

"Kylie is coming back hopefully. Her people are quite confident. She really wants to do it," said Mr Eavis.

The singer had to pull out of last year's festival after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Mr Eavis was speaking at the London launch of a documentary film about the 35-year-old event, told through the eyes of festival-goers."Kylie doesn't fit the Glastonbury festival image with Neighbours and all that razzmatazz, but her shows are so theatrical they are almost like a circus in a way, which really fits in with Glastonbury," added Mr Eavis.

The festival is taking a break this summer, but is due to take place again in 2007. Faithless and Rolf Harris were among the musical acts at the screening who have performed at Glastonbury. It had its first UK screening at Street, Somerset, close to the festival's home.

Director Julien Temple, whose previous credits include The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and Absolute Beginners, began work on the film in 2002 when Eavis decided to have a permanent record of the festival put on film as its future was in doubt.

Film crews then visited all the festivals between 2002-5 and collected 1,500 hours of amateur and professional footage.

In a statement on the Glastonbury website, Mr Eavis said Temple had done a "brilliant" job. "The most important thing is he hasn't left anything out," said Mr Eavis. "He's really captured the festival - the good times and the bad times, but most of all, the many important things that the festival has come to represent over so many years."

The festival started in 1970 when Eavis sold 1,500 tickets to watch Marc Bolan perform on his dairy farm.

It has gone on to become one of the biggest annual events of the UK music calendar, attracting top bands and more than 100,000 fans each year. Among the acts to feature in the film, released across the UK on Friday, are The Velvet Underground, Primal Scream, Coldplay, and Bjork.

"Making this film has been very similar to being at the festival," said producer Robert Richards. "It's been an intense, life-changing experience, and once all the washing-up has been done, full of happy memories," he said.

Tim McGraw (music) and Faith Hill (music)'s "Soul2Soul II" tour was Ticketmaster's "most requested event" during the first quarter of 2006, based on online page views, information requests and ticket sales from Jan. 1 through March 31. (Ticketmaster is LiveDaily's parent company.)

According to a Ticketmaster press release, the Top 5 was rounded out by Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, David Gilmour and Bon Jovi.

A movie documenting the Glastonbury Music Festival, simply entitled 'Glastonbury', will hit the big screens this week, with its premiere taking place in London tonight.

The world-famous festival is taking a break this year, but will be back for 2007, and organisers had recorded 1,500 of amateur and professional footage of the last few festivals to make the film.

"For such a long time I've been scared of becoming involved in making a film about the festival, because it could be so wrong," Eavis said on the Glastonbury Web site.
