The tickets to Elbow's show Saturday at the Avalon read "all ages," but perhaps it should have been billed "for mature audiences only."

It's not that the Manchester, England-based quintet's lyrics are laced with expletives, but its thoughtful, mostly midtempo rock is not recommended for those suffering from attention deficit disorder. Elbow's music is aimed at listeners who appreciate subtle musical flourishes and clever wordplay without being hit over that head with a hammer of power chords.

That isn't a bad description of Elbow's sound. The quintet has been frequently compared to fellow Brits Coldplay, whose Chris Martin has said he borrowed from Elbow's "Grace Under Pressure" for his "Fix You." The similarity proved valid Saturday, only Garvey's vocals -- which range from a throaty monotone to a soothing higher register -- sound more like Peter Gabriel's than Martin's. While Garvey is a personable frontman, he doesn't exude the sort of charisma or showmanship that make Coldplay and Gabriel such compelling live acts. That became clear three songs into the set when singer-guitarist Guy Garvey led Elbow through "Leaders of the Free World," the title track of its recently released V2 album. In the song, Garvey's weary protagonist is "sick of working for a living" and "just ticking off the days 'til (he) dies." Yet he still has the strength to dismiss the titular leaders as "little boys throwing stones" until "they're knocking on the doors of your homes." While punk rockers may have delivered similar ethos nearly 30 years ago over machine-gun guitars and a ranting vocal, Elbow stretched it out into a simmering six-minute-plus exercise that never quite reached the boiling point, but made you believe that Garvey's narrator is at the end of his rope.

In spite of the brooding nature of some of Elbow's material, Garvey turned out to be quite the good-natured host. Apologizing for the band's absence from touring, Garvey noted that guitarist Mark Potter and his brother, Elbow keyboardist Craig, both recently became fathers. (Later in the set, he dedicated the intimate ballad "Newborn" to the new arrivals.) When a member of the audience shouted, "Dads rule!," Garvey asked, "Does that make us 'dad rock'?"

However, there were a few moments in which Elbow turned up the heat, breaking from its usual somber balladry. "Mexican Standoff," from the new album, rocked with an enticing mix of Bo Diddley and Latin-flavored beats. On another number -- which sounded like an eerie Tom Waits track, only with the gruff vocals replaced by Garvey's croon -- the bearded frontman pounded on a pair of drums while lights flashed along with the beats. Then there was the celebratory set closer "Forget Myself," which inspired fans to clap along. If Elbow can continue to come up with more songs like that, then perhaps it could really give Coldplay a run for its money.

Source: http://today.reuters.com

Mum & Baby 'Doing Fine'

For the latest off-spring of the Coldplay front man and his wife, the Oscar-winning film star Gwyneth Paltrow, it is a legacy their newborn boy will bear even more publicly. Yesterday the couple announced the birth of their son, and that they had called him Moses.

The child arrived safely this weekend, according to the actress’s spokeswoman Emily Yomtobian who could neither confirm nor deny whether his passage into the world had been hastened through a Caesarean section.
The Campaign to Make Poverty History announced today the MTV broadcast premiere of its new campaign to reach and engage millions of Americans in the fight against global AIDS and extreme poverty.

“The “ONE Click Spot” will air as part of an MTV News report during the highly-popular “Total Request Live” on Monday, April 10 and stars some of the biggest names in music and Hollywood, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Gwen Stefani, Dave Matthews, Coldplay, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Orlando Bloom, Heidi Klum, Salma Hayek, Jewel, 50 Cent and Bono.

In the spot, each clicks their fingers to show that every three seconds, a child dies of AIDS and extreme poverty-and that millions of Americans have the power to come together as ONE and save lives in Africa and the world’s poorest countries. The :30 spots in support of ONE will continue to roll out across MTV, MTV2, MTVU and MTV Overdrive, inviting viewers to visit http://WWW.ONE.ORG to learn more about the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty and what they and America can do to help create hope and opportunity for the world’s poorest people.

“MTV is honored to host the ONE SPOT across our platforms in our continuing efforts to bring awareness to global AIDS and poverty,” said Ian Rowe, vice president of strategic partnerships and public affairs. “It is possible to end extreme poverty, so we hope it will be another tool to engage our audience on these dire issues and inspire them to be a part of the fight.”

The MTV broadcast builds on the success of the historic Live 8 events and airs on the one year anniversary of the 2005 premiere of the first “ONE SPOT”, seen by millions across MTV Networks and Viacom outlets. Close to 1 million people attended 2005’s Live 8 concert in Philadelphia, joining with the 3.8 billion people around the world who turned up, tuned in or logged on to ask America and the world’s leaders to deliver a historic deal on debt, HIV/AIDS and trade for Africa at the 2005 Gleneagles G8 Summit.

On a wave of support from the LIVE 8 concerts, the G8 leaders met five days later for a landmark meeting that achieved more than any G8 in history. Leaders promised $25 billion more for Africa and $50 billion more globally by 2010 and agreed to provide write off over $50 billion in crushing debt for 38 of the world’s poorest countries and give access to HIV/AIDS drugs not just to everyone who can afford them, but to everyone who needs them. The G8 also agreed to provide basic schooling for every child by 2015, giving the over 100 million children currently out of school around the world the opportunity to receive an education.

“One thing that all these leaders agree on is that to fight extreme stupid poverty, getting kids in schools is one of the best investments we can make,” said U2 lead singer and DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) co-founder Bono.

If kept, the G8’s historic commitments could save over 4.5 million lives a year by 2010. Today, over 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day, and every day in Africa, HIV/AIDS kills 6,600 people, 8,500 people are infected with the HIV virus and 1,400 newborn babies are infected during childbirth. ONE is helping Americans raise their voices as ONE against the emergency of AIDS and extreme poverty, joining together to ask leaders to do more to change and save millions of lives in the world’s poorest countries.

ABOUT ONE: THE CAMPAIGN TO MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

ONE — http://www.one.org — is a new effort by Americans to rally Americans — ONE by ONE — to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. ONE is a coalition of 2 million people and over 70 of the nation’s leading relief, humanitarian and advocacy organizations.
Coldplay's latest hit is an ode to the assets of Mariah Carey. Except you would have had to have been at the China Club on Thursday to hear its one-off performance.

Chris Martin's band was giving a private concert for winners of a contest sponsored by radio station WPLJ, when he was asked about the competition between Coldplay's "X&Y" and Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" for biggest-selling album of 2005. When WPLJ reporter Brad Blanks asked Martin how he felt about having Mariah on his tail, he replied: "She's not, but one of her boobs is. They do most of her work.
Well I can’t believe it’s over. Several weeks ago I had an idea to try to do something special on the last night of the US leg of the CP tour…to say thank you and to show the guys how much their music means to their fans in the US. In the end I met some great people who showed great committment and determination to help my idea come to life. To the friends I have made I say a big thank you for your efforts…I think we accomplished what we set out to do.

The night started off great our meeting in the parking lot was great…a chance to finally meet the people behind the forum ID’s and countless emails. We had members from as far away as Florida and Ontario. Trying to figure out how we would get 12,000 signs in took a bit of figuring but again everyone stepped up and did what they had to do. As we approached the door as a group the trouble began. A very stern and assertive security guard with and intimidating russian accent shouted “you can not bring those in!!! After some smooth talking by Barbara (AiresLady) the guard agreed to ask for a decision from the top guy. After a few minutes and silent prayers they let us in!!! You can imagine the relief we felt once we got through the door. We had put to much time, effort and money into making those signs and we were not going to take no for an answer. Once in we finalized the plan and found our seats.

View the pictures here

[Review] Coldplay At China Club, NY - WPLJ Intimate Lunchtime Special

United Center, Chicago, IL 31st March 2006

Invevitably, a day with no load in following a party is going to be a slow and quiet one. This is enhanced by the fact that Richard Ashcroft isn’t well today, which means no soundcheck, and no show for him. it’s by far the most Sunday-like day of the tour. There’s plenty of afternoon naps and very little activity until finally, showtime rolls around.

The ‘Powers of Ten’ footage that is shown on the rears screen during The Scientist, is a journey through outer and inner space, as the camera zooms from the far ends of the universe through solar systems and planets, to the Earth, and then down to a guy lying in a park by a lake, continuing into his skin, down to the cells and moelcules in his body. The lake just happens to be Lake Michigan. As the zoom reaches an ariel view of Chicago, there’s a cheer of recognition. With the likes of Google Earth, I guess it won’t be long before a tour shows a zoom in from space to the roof of the venue each night. For tonight though, it’s special.

The show continues the exceedingly relaxed vibe, when a beanbag and popcorn is bourght onstage for Guy at the start of the acoustic section of the show. It’s explained that this is an early birthday present. It has been provided to allow him to enjoy the first half of ‘Til Kingdom Come’, during which he doesn’t play. He sits back with a grin and a bottle of beer and proceeds to spend the majority of the song throwing popcorn at Jonny.

Source: The Coldplayer

[use a spell check next time please!]

Apple vs. Apple Draws To A Close

Coldplay's Chris Martin introduced Bryan Adams, who was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the broadcast of the Award ceremony.

This is Chris Martin's Juno's speech:

"You better be quiet coz I can’t hear myself think. He’s a crucial part of it and that’s kind of all I’ve got to say about him.

He’s fantastic.
Make plans to flee town while you can. There are black holes that suck less than this lineup. How much vile Limey crapness can one venue stand? If you don't know why Coldplay are evil, then you're evil. You also like James Blunt, U2, Morrissey and Travis. And you think the stuff on sale at Pier 1 is "classy." Ex-Verve singer "Grizzly" Dick Ashcroft once boasted to the NME that he was "in the same room" as the Beatles and Hendrix. And so he is. "Hey, boy! Move your arse! More tea and biscuits-chop chop! And clear up Mr. Hendrix's drug vomit while you're at it, you miserable little hippie toe-rag."

[source: Philadelphiaweekly.com]

[Junos] Coldplaying Boardies Meets Chris Martin

So autumjoy had all these grand plans of how to wander around the city looking for the guys. Me, being the paranoid cynical type I am thought this was a little crazy and would never work. I went to the huge (amazing) Broken Social Scene concert Saturday night, and woke up Sunday hardly able to hear, and barely able to move I ached so much. As much as I really wanted to find the guys, I couldn't bear the though of moving more than a couple of feet at a time, and like I said, I didn't think we had much of a chance anyway.

Then Joy called. She'd been hanging out around the Metro Centre, and had met them all on the way into soundcheck. (I'll let her give you the details of that.) I finished getting ready and hightailed it down there myself. Guy, Will and Jonny had already left, but Chris was still inside rehearsing. There was basically no one there besides autumnjoy's family and a couple of other people. Everyone else was at the other end of the building lining the red carpet hoping to see someone...

I had made it just in time. Chris came out in that black hoodie of his. And we all went a bit crazy. I asked him to sign my arobtth cover. I'm shy to begin with, but I wasn't as tounge-tied as I was afraid of being, even though I just sort of mumbled stuff. It's strange... the sort of things I wish I could say is how that album you just signed was the first real cd I ever owned, and how it gets played twice as often as anything, and how the music changed my world and means so much to me. But of course however true that may be it's all cliches and in the end I just go along with other people's conversations.

Chris talks about how cold it is and how can we stand it out there. (The wind was ferocious that day and he was just wearing a thin hoodie) I think I said something about getting used to it and shrugging. Someone told him how they could hear the soundcheck and it sounded really good. Chris gave a typical it was crap kind of answer (have I mentioned how much I love this guy yet?) and promised it would be awesome that night. Autumnjoy's mom got up to courage to ask if she could see Chris's new haircut, to which he said something about how he was still really self-concious about it.

He was so amazingly patient with everyone, and seemed like he was in a really good mood, even if he was shivering. He posed for pictures with people, and signed autographs and stuff. Of course I was so starstruck by that point I couldn't even squeak out a request for a picture, and so he was off.

Seriously. Nicest guy in the universe.

And for the record, in spite of whatever misgivings he had about the haircut, based on what I saw at the actual Junos, I'd say its my favorite haircut of his ever. It looked perfect. No worries.

More on this here [thanks Erin]

I’m just home now (my sister wanted to go downtown to see about getting into a club where Black Eyed Peas was hosting a party… the line was around the block.. we skipped).

I had the most incredible day. I talked to Chris and Guy as they were heading in for soundcheck… soooo nice. I can’t say enough about how nice Chris is. Guy didn’t talk much, but he was sweet too. Got autographs, pictures with the boys, etc… it was … just.. unbelievable.

I’ll upload pics and vids later.

You know, there’s a reason we all love this band so much. It’s not just because they create the most incredible music in the world. Or because they’re pretty damn fine. And it’s not because they check on their fans during a performance (although, that’s a pretty big reason).

It’s because they’re so nice, and so normal. A tech guy unrelated to the coldplay tech guys came out, looked at me, said “weren’t you the one that got a pic with Coldplay?” I said yes, and he went on to praise Chris and talk about how down to earth he is and how nice and kind and friendly and warm… etc…

Thats why we love these boys. They aren’t rock stars… they’re lovely people who play and sing incredibly well.

Well, at least… that’s why I love them.

Goodnight! Like I said.. more pictures and videos to follow.. and pictures of the back of my Parachutes album (vinyl) which is scrawled with siggys now [thanks Autumnjoy]

Coldplay Nominated For Two VMAs
