ANOTHER SPECTACULAR LINE-UP FOR 2006 TEENAGE CANCER TRUST CONCERTS

The sixth year of Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall once again looks like producing some of the live shows of the year – and this time there’s an extra show – a Saturday night treat with The Cure playing their first UK date with a new line-up and their only confirmed show of 2006 so far.

Previous Teenage Cancer Trust shows have featured show-stopping performances from The Who, Coldplay, Oasis, Eric Clapton, Kaiser Chiefs, Paul Weller, Doves, Franz Ferdinand, Sir Tom Jones, Stereophonics, Richard Ashcroft, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Keane, Bryan Adams, Madness, UB40, Ash, Jools Holland, Solomon Burke, Nigel Kennedy and Roger Daltrey.

Indie sensation Feist, vocal goddess Jann Arden and hip hop legend Kardinal Offishall [pictured] are just some of the talented Canadian artists who will present at this year's Juno Awards in Halifax.

Born in Amherst, N.S., raised in Calgary, and living in Toronto (before her move to Paris), Feist is no stranger to Canada's great landscape.

The talented singer-songwriter-guitarist took home two Junos last year for best new artist and best alternative album for her 2004 record, Let It Die. This year, in addition to presenting a Juno, she is also nominated for single of the year for "Inside Out."Critically acclaimed songstress, Jann Arden is doing double duty as a presenter and a nominee. Her self-titled album is nominated for pop album of the year and she is also nominated for the producer of the year for her song, "Willing to Fall Down."

Toronto's most celebrated MC, Kardinal Offishall, will also have to balance the challenge being a presenter and a nominee. His latest album, Fire And Glory is up for the rap recording of the year Juno Award.

The final star-studded list of Juno presenters, unveiled Wednesday, includes many more Juno nominated musicians.

A total of 18 artists and personalities will present seven Juno Awards - airing on April 2 at 7 p.m. on CTV.

Other Juno Award presenters include k-os, Jully Black, Hot Hot Heat, Joel Plaskett, Kalan Porter, Rex Goudie, Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle and Bob Hallett and many more.

Hosted by 2006 Canada's Walk of Fame inductee Pamela Anderson, the two-hour broadcast also includes performances by top Canadian and international artists.

The broadcast will feature performances by Bedouin Soundclash, Black Eyed Peas, Broken Social Scene, 2006 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Adams, Buck 65, Coldplay, Divine Brown, Hedley, Massari, Michael Bublé and Nickelback.

This year's winners will be anybody's guess with such talented nominees.

Leading the way with a total of six nods for the 35th Annual Juno Awards are multi-platinum rock icons Nickelback.

Michael Bublé and jazz Queen Diana Krall tied for the second most nominations with five each.

Nominated for three Juno Awards each are Montreal's Arcade Fire, first-time nominee Kalan Porter, rock icon Neil Young and Canada's internationally-acclaimed Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

Detroit rules in "Coachella," a concert movie compendium of performances from the six years that the Coachella Music & Arts Festival has thrown up its many tents in Indio, Calif.

With Tennessee's Bonnaroo given more to jam bands, and the Burning Man preoccupied with personal expression rather than rawk-and-rawl, it's left to Coachella to carry the torch -- sometimes literally -- for the music itself.

In a film that's not short on fine performances, the two best come from the reunited Stooges, with Iggy getting down like it's 1969, and the band that might not have existed without him, the White Stripes. The Stripes' Jack White says "Funhouse" was the record that made him want to do what he does, which is play the twisted blues so powerfully and soulfully that on this night he and Meg White may have constituted the best band in the land.

Those who make a yearly pilgrimage to Coachella may be left wondering why some of the more storied sets are not represented; neither last year's appearance by Coldplay nor the legendary 2002 performance by perennials Queens of the Stone Age is included.One will have to visit Coachella Web sites to ascertain who is playing at which edition of the festival, since director Drew Thomas, whose credits include the less raucous "A Supernatural Evening with Carlos Santana," does not identify the year on-screen. That leaves the impression that one concert was big enough to accommodate the Stripes, Iggy, the goofy but often ethereal Polyphonic Spree, a subdued and sensuous Radiohead, Bjork and Flaming Lips, whose onstage shtick is beginning to resemble a Pink Floyd show directed by Monty Python.

The music is occasionally interrupted by peace-and-love endorsements from those in attendance and the inevitable backstage interviews where it is universally agreed that Coachella is just the coolest place to play ever, dude.

Yet the pitches can be put out of your mind when followed by a gorgeous, setting-sun performance of "The Boy with the Arab Strap" by Belle & Sebastian and the Brit-pop heat blast of Oasis, who in the end might know only one song but when they get it as right as they do here, they can hypnotize.

Though Thomas had the advantage of cherry-picking his festival to remember, he does us the courtesy of accurately reflecting the overall experience by including performances from Prodigy, as tedious and tuneless as ever, and an appearance by Bright Eyes talent Conor Oberst in which he seems to be auditioning for the role of Timmy in a new version of "Lassie."

The latest version of Queens is slated to appear at this year's festival, which reminds us that this one-night-only screening is really just an infomercial, both for this summer's show and the impending release of this compilation on DVD in April.

Brit-pop matchups don't get much better than last night's Coldplay/Richard Ashcroft double bill at the Air Canada Centre.

It's hard to beat Coldplay's Chris Martin and ex-Verve singer Richard Ashcroft when it comes to riveting frontmen.

Coldplay, who are on the second leg of their North American tour, have visited Toronto twice previously in support of their third album, X&Y, launching the entire tour last August at the ACC and playing a special club show at Kool Haus back in May.

Coldplay obviously love Canada, and the feeling appears to be mutual. Last night's show and tonight's second concert sold out immediately with 17,000 tickets for each performance snapped up quickly, and were/are being filmed for an upcoming DVD.

The story of Peter Pan and the music of Coldplay are not typically seen together in a ballet performance.

However, this Sunday, Volé, Penn State's student-run ballet club, will feature these themes in its spring performance.

Stripay said the spring performance consists of two acts: "Peter Pan" and "Coldplay Ballet".

The success of Coldplay’s third album, X & Y, accurately foreshadowed the repertoire of energy the band brought forth to the Bradley Center in Milwaukee Sunday night. Frontman Chris Martin started the evening with the same amount of enthusiasm as that with which the show ended, illustrating his yearning to one day be mentioned in the same breath as Bono of U2, which he has publicly confessed.

When Coldplay came onto the stage, an explosive combustion of energy penetrated throughout the arena that was felt from the nosebleed seats all the way up to the stage. This sentiment was the catapult of the evening’s brilliant performance. Psychedelic light patterns alternated throughout the concert and enhanced the performance.

The first clue that Coldplay’s return to the Air Canada Centre Wednesday night wasn’t meant to be just another sold-out rock show at the hangar could be glimpsed high in the rafters, where the banners charting the local hockey club’s storied past had been taken down.

Gone was Bill Barilko, patron saint of the Tragically Hip’s “Fifty Mission Cap.” Gone, too, was the pennant for the Maple Leafs’ last Stanley Cup victory - which, admittedly, took place about a dozen years before any of the four London lads in the band had even been born.

Korn will perform at the fifth annual MTV Asia Awards, set to take place May 6 in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition, the band has received a nomination in the "Favorite Video" category for their "Twisted Transistor" clip. Other artists receiving nods include Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz, Coldplay, Fort Minor and Oasis.

Korn guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer recently told Billboard.com that he and Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis have already written five new tracks for the band's next album. While he wouldn't divulge song titles, he did say the material is in the vein of "See You on the Other Side" tracks "Love Song" and "Coming Undone". Recording isn't expected to get underway until late 2006 or early 2007. A full-length version of Korn'a latest video, "Coming Undone", has been posted online at this location. The song comes off the band's seventh studio album, "See You on the Other Side", which has sold 752,000 copies since its December 6 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Korn kicked off the North American leg of their 2006 world tour late last month in the band's hometown of Bakersfield, California. The trek, which also features Mudvayne and 10 Years, will finish up on April 4 in Toronto, Canada.

Arctic Monkeys March 21st - Phoenix Concert Theatre

Acknowledging the show as the band's proper introduction to Toronto fans ("We couldn't really have it last night," Turner said jokingly), the sweat-soaked foursome lurched into the set's closing track - "A Certain Romance."

Taking a drum-roll beginning and melding it with melodic Jonny Buckland-style harmonies, Turner painted a bleak picture of what life is like back home. "The point's that there isn't no romance around there," he sings.

Allowing for the eternal advantage enjoyed by the headliner over the opener, the Britpop heirs-apparent held their own against the reigning kings of Britpop during a thunderous display of rock 'n' roll dynamism at a sold-out Air Canada Centre on Monday night.

And, perhaps surprisingly, the kids even earned some kudos from their elders in the process.

Oasis, ever reluctant to relinquish their grasp on the crown, even when that grasp has sometimes seemed more tenuous than real, has seldom had anything but a disparaging word for upstarts — particularly serious contenders like Coldplay, who arrive for ACC sets of their own today and Thursday.

There’s another soundcheck today, so we’re all set and ready by 4pm. Chris is arriving separately and is still on his way from the airport.

Will, Jonny and Guy get up and start noodling around. Guy has a fantastic chunky bass riff which he plays over and over, letting Will and Jonny pick up and join in. As tends to be the case when jamming with no vocals, the music gets rather intense and a bit spacey. The tune takes a twist and a lurching turn as Jonny joins in with an atonal guitar part which is slightly grating but at the same time utterly wonderful.

The whole piece falls together and quite frankly becomes the audio equivalent of the three guys off looking for trouble. If this is a glimpse of the promised ‘harder edge’ I’m into it already.

Eventually Chris arrives, and there’s some work to be done on a track they haven’t attempted since the beginning of the tour. Inevitably, there’s a couple of shaky run through as they try to remember how exactly it goes. Soon though, they’re all playing the same parts of the song at the same time, which always helps. There’s some lighting programming to look at, so the guys leave the stage and let Richard Ashcroft’s crew set up. It’s utterly great having Richard back. He’s a proper legend and undoubtedly lights a fire under the guys by going on before them. Talk about a tought act to follow, but you get the feeling that that half the point of inviting him along.

When the Coldplay set gets underway, I watch one of the crowd close to where I’m working . She has a camera in one hand and her cellphone in the other, clearly determined to capture as much of the experience to take him with her as possible. I can’t quite work out what to think, whether she’s missing out on actually BEING THERE, or if it’s a classic example of the age, where so much more than ever, people have the ability to record moments in their life they want to remember. Either way, it gets me wondering how many thousands of digital camera photos, and tiny video clips existing of the Twisted Logic tour.

Maybe I should try to find out…

Being the first show of the leg, the band are soundchecking today. It’s got to the point now, where this seems very odd. The guys are clearly in good form after the break too. Jonny is messing with a guitar sound, and suddenly stumbles upon the riff fro ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’. The whole band fall in behind him and Chris is off in his best Axl Rose impression. Not quite sure whether that one’ll make it into the set tonight…

More DVD shoot preparations are in progress, most notably the return of an old friend for Clocks. I’m not sure whether to spill the beans or not, but someone’ll mention it on the message board, so what the hell. Yep, the laser is back! We’ve all missed it. Lots of alternatives have been tried, but lets face it - Cocks (sp) needs a laser. Now, it’s got one again, and all’s well with the world.The decision to film the DVD in Canada is vindicated tonight by a top crowd. They’re loud and they’re keen. One in particular is loudly keen on Mr Berryman, paying tribute to him with a rather impressive banner. Poor fella looks a little bashful, but deep down, I’m sure he loves it…

It has been a good move also, to put the DVD shoot early in a leg, as the energy levels are plenty high tonight, which will combine nicely with the nervous crackle summoned by a dozen cameras on the night

Next month, the Sundance Channel will air a special on the making of R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe's Hurricane Katrina benefit EP.

Titled "In The Sun," the short film takes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the EP and features interviews with Stipe, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.
