Global hip-hop wonders Black Eyed Peas and Vancouver rockers Hedley are the next acts to join the lineup for The 2006 JUNO Awards broadcast, it was announced today by CTV and the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). The two groups join previously announced artists Bedouin Soundclash, Broken Social Scene, 2006 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Adams, Coldplay, Michael Bublé and Nickelback.

For all its radio hits, Coldplay has always seemed like the poor man's U2.

In concert, at least in Saturday night's show at TD Waterhouse Centre, singer Chris Martin and his band mates gave that and a run for its money.

Coldplay delivered a steady stream of fan favorites, augmented by a gorgeous assortment of spotlights and video effects that were enough to make one forget that all the songs basically sound the same.

Compared with the odd lack of energy at U2's arena show in Tampa last fall -- maybe the band was just having an off night? -- Martin was a captivating front man for a band that looked like it was genuinely having fun.

You get the feeling Brit-pop kings Coldplay can generate lush, larger-than-life soundscapes in their sleep. The quartet has been consistently gorgeous since 2000 debut Parachutes and especially on 2002 followup A Rush of Blood to the Head .

But after two albums that dedicated great chunks to the soul-shredding intricacies of heartbreak, 2005 album X&Y was bloated with what’s-it-all-about head-tripping, big themes that tired listeners more than titillated them. The fact that Martin married actor Gwyneth Paltrow and had a daughter leading up to X&Y is not to be underestimated.

That said, Coldplay is a lot more enjoyable and engaging live than on album. Martin is a Gumby-bendable frontman, all spastic energy and playing to the crowd. Before his set even started, he threw flowers into the audience and apologized for canceling a Tampa date last September.

Coldplay and the Foo Fighters have been announced to headline Sunday and Saturday respectively at this year's Nokia IW Festival.

Lindsay Weatherston, from promoters Solo, said: "Coldplay and Foo Fighters are two of the biggest acts in the world today.

"It is truly fantastic that in only our fifth year we have attracted acts of this stature. We really feel that the IW Festival is now firmly back on the map. The Island should feel very proud."

She added: "I watched Coldplay at Glastonbury last year, thinking how incredible it would be to have them at our festival. They are the perfect IW Festival band."

The festival is to be staged at Seaclose Park, Newport, from Friday, June 9, to Sunday, June 11.

Acts previously announced include Friday headliners The Prodigy and Placebo, along with Goldfrapp and The Rakes; Saturday acts Primal Scream, Editors, Dirty Pretty Things, The Kooks, The Upper Room and 747s; and Sunday performers Richard Ashcroft, Lou Reed, Maximo Park and Kubb.

Coldplay have confirmed that the fourth single to be lifted from their multi-million selling X&Y album will be The Hardest Part and BBC Radio 1 reports that it will hit the shops on Monday April 3rd.

Full details of the new single are expected to be confirmed shortly but HMV as a 12" vinyl version listed as The Hardest Part Live EP, with details to follow.

The band are also planning to record two of their shows in Canada for a future DVD, lead singer Chris Martin explained on their official website, "Several of our all-time favourite gigs have happened in Canada so what better place to film our shows".

A band of Berwick High School students will play in front of music royalty next month after making it to the final of a major national competition.

Loose Wire have been picked from thousands of bands to perform at the awards night of the Make It, Break It competition in the Paul McCartney Auditorium at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts on April 8. Among the audience will be the competition judges — Chris Martin of Coldplay, rapper Ms Dynamite, DJ Mark Radcliffe, producer Steve Levine and promoter Harvey Goldsmith.

Not bad for a band whose live experience to date consists of exactly three gigs!

Coldplay fans turned out en masse in Washington on Thursday night to send birthday wishes to the band’s curly mopped frontman, Chris Martin.

Nearly 2,000 posters emblazoned with the message, “Happy Birthday Chris!” were raised during the concert’s encore at MCI Center, The Washington Post’s J. Freedom du Lac reports.

A stunned Martin, whose voice was frayed because of a confessed tequila binge the night before, took in the message and bowed to the crowd.

Coldplay will film its March 22-23 stand at Toronto`s Air Canada Centre for potential use in an upcoming DVD. Taking a page from the Beastie Boys, who drafted fans to shoot footage for their upcoming movie 'Awesome: I ... Shot That,' Coldplay is launching a contest to find five fans to handle the same duties.

Beginning Monday (March 6), Canadian fans can enter the sweepstakes by watching Entertainment Tonight Canada and then logging onto Global TV`s Web site. Winners will take home a digital video camera that they will use to film the March 22 show. The footage will then be eligible for inclusion on the Coldplay DVD, a release date for which has not been announced.

The band is in the midst of a North American tour, which visits Milwaukee`s Bradley Center tonight. International dates begin June 23 in Brisbane, Australia, and will run through July 18-19 in Tokyo. Afterward, Coldplay plans to quickly get busy working on new material.

Meanwhile, next month will bring the release of 'The Hardest Part,' the fourth single from the band`s 2005 album 'X&Y.' Current single 'Talk' is No. 13 this week on Billboard`s Modern Rock chart.

Coldplay are inviting fans to film their gigs so their footage can be used for the concert DVD.

The project – which applies to their Toronto gigs on March 22-23 – was inspired by the Beastie Boys’ Awesome: I F**kin’ Shot That. It was made by five fans in the audience at one of their shows.

A competition will be launched on Canadian television to select five fans to take on the task. The band plan to use the resulting footage on a DVD of the occasion.

Coldplay underlined that 2005 was their year by selling out three consecutive nights at London’s 18.000-capacity Earls Court last December. It was the climax of their 80-date Twisted Logic world tour adn the sense of occasion is palpable on this download.

As Jonny Buckland plays the guitar intro to Talk, Martin acknowledges that it’s lifted from Kraftwerk’s Computer Love by counting in the drums in German. “Ein, zwei, drei, funfzehn,” he shouts, in an arch nod to Bono’s Spanish introduction to Vertigo.

It's one of those bands the media is supposed to praise. Coldplay issues melodic songs. The lyrics are serious. And, by golly, front man Chris Martin dates Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But Coldplay, which returns to Tampa after Martin wussed out at the last minute with a sore throat several months ago, just doesn't move me. There is nothing sexy, scary or dangerous about their music or stage show.

And what is rock 'n' roll without a little of that?In other words, the group has no mojo. Martin sounds bored when he sings. So how is he going to excite me, the listener?

Coldplay reminds me of a weak knock-off U2, a Grammy-gorged group I feel has been phoning in their performances since "Achtung Baby." Or ever since Bono let his Christ-complex get the best of him. But that's another screed I'll save for another day and another deadline.

Coldplay is also clearly indebted to fellow Brit-rockers Radiohead.

Radiohead was terrific before Thom Yorke let all the critical capital go to his head following the release of the outstanding "OK Computer." Ever since then he's gotten experimental and refused to write killer, off-kilter, pitiful, paranoid tracks like "Creep," "Fake Plastic Trees," "Airbag" and "Karma Police."

It appears Yorke stopped letting it all hang out for the sake of the song. It is understandable, though. At least he did dig deep on a couple of records before retreating to safer ground. Coldplay copied the Radiohead template but missed the crazed core that made their mentor group special.

Coldplay, especially lead singer Martin, remains far removed from the flame. He's probably never even singed his hand. Or hung around people who burn, burn, burn.

For someone who cherishes albums such as "Highway 61 Revisited," "Exile on Mainstreet," "Led Zeppelin II," "Back in Black" and "Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East," Coldplay's success is frustrating.

Coldplay doesn't have a manic bone in its musical makeup. So how can it rumble the hips of anyone in love with the lewd, crude, loud and beautiful fury of "the devil's music?"

In fact, I'll take opening act Fiona Apple over headliner Coldplay. I hope she blows those guys back into their dressing room - and leaves them clutching their bottled waters, afraid and ashamed to go on stage.

Apple is crazier than a hopped-up loon. But the woman is talented, too, which doesn't hurt. Have you heard her latest record, "Extraordinary Machine?" How can you not be drawn to a woman who unleashes lines like "Wait 'till I get him back/He won't have a back to scratch."

That's rock 'n' roll.

Coldplay's Martin could never write lines like that, let alone feel such a statement, put it across to an audience and make them revel in the shared sentiment.

That's a lot for a man or woman to offer. That's why you've got to love a gal like Apple for dancing barefoot on the edge. I don't think Martin and his band mates want to go that far, or get their fans off in that kind of way.

And that's so NOT rock 'n' roll.

“Oh and how funny was it when the show first started and all those technicolor light screens blazed, totally shocking the audience? I screamed out, “Holy crap! It’s a Coldplay concert!” It was only later when Kiran shouted at me, “is that Chris Martin?!?!” that I realized that Coldplay (or at least Chris, Will Champion, and Jonny Buckland) were actually present at the show. I guess they were just making sure their lighting equipment was being treated well.”

“i was at the strokes show last night3/1/06(which was excellent) in nyc and who comes barrelling down the stairs from the private balconies during the encore but a VERY pregnant beautiful blonde….i am like holy sh*t its ….then my friends goes, uhh, look in front of her, and there he was, mr chris martin walking down the stairs with a black sweater with a hood up…people went bananas. i was the closest person to him and her, but couldnt get it together to go say anything. some girl walked right over and spoke with him while she continued down the stairs…he seemed gracious and that was that. i gave him a yell right before he turned around to go down the stairs and he gave me the thumbs up…stoked.

The government has announced a range of new initiatives to help British music acts break into the American market.

These include making new research into the US market available to UK music companies and developing a website highlighting the latest British music. Other moves include a broad programme of gigs showcasing UK musicians. The measures come ahead of the South by South West music festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, which this year hosts its largest ever British presence.

"From the Beatles, through David Bowie to Coldplay, the UK music scene has always led the world," said Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Alan Johnson at a press conference in London on Thursday."But we have not always capitalised on our talent to break America. I want to ensure that Government works with the industry and our best artists to showcase talent in the US."

The initiatives have the full support of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the record industry's trade association, and AIM, the non-profit trade body representing the independent record sector. British acts appearing at SXSW this year include Goldfrapp, Morrissey, KT Tunstall and Corinne Bailey Rae.

Held over a five-day period every March, the festival is regarded as the recording industry's primary showcasing event. This week British singer-songwriter James Blunt became the first UK artist to top the US singles chart since 1997.

The New York Times published an article making the “Case Against Coldplay.” One vote for Coldplay and you may be the deciding vote against an indie rock oligarchy. If you kind of like them, sometimes, well you might as well just be voting for Ralph Nader. So a band of such polarizing effect, may inspire mass hysteria upon their arrival in Oklahoma City right?

Coldplay have quashed speculation they are on the brink of splitting by revealing details of a new "edgier" album.

The band - who warned at the Brit Awards earlier this month "People are fed up with us and so are we" - will signal their commitment to the group by setting up their own recording studio in London. The move was inspired by German collaborators on their latest X&Y album [pictured], Kraftwerk, who have their own studio to keep outsiders away and distractions to a minimum.

Drummer Will Champion says, "We're trying to find somewhere where we can set up and work. In all these years we haven't got a HQ, our own studio or anything like that. We want somewhere where we can sort of hole up and see what happens."

And bassist Guy Berryman hopes the intense recording experience will provide the perfect opportunity to take Coldplay's music to a different level.

He says, "I don't want to generalise it and say 'We're going to become electronic' because I don't think we are going to become truly electronic. I think there's going to be elements of lots of things. It's hard to say, all the ideas are just spinning around inside my head and I've got a lot of new toys to play with. I always like our next record to be a bit harder sounding. Not rock harder just edgier. We'll always have melody."

With a sudden jolt, a giant Cinemascope monitor illuminated the Ford Center stage Monday night, backlighting the shadowy figures of Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jon Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman. Martin leaned on the monitor, intoning the opening lines from Coldplay’s latest album, “X&Y,” to the capacity crowd.

“You’re in control. Is there anywhere you want to go?” Martin sang as a digital countdown commenced on the screen. For the next 90 minutes, Martin and Coldplay took the audience everywhere it wanted to go. It proved that in the three years since Coldplay’s performance at the Civic Center Music Hall, the Oxford, England, group has evolved into something massive: a world-class band that has no problem filling stadiums with spectacle, exuberance and its dramatic, heart-stirring music.

BBC's 6 Music has learned that Abbey Road studios will not be prosecuted over a Coldplay gig it hosted for the BBC.

The recording studio was threatened with prosecution under new licensing laws because it hosted an "illegal" gig organised by the broadcasting corporation.

Lawyers from Westminster Council claimed the concert, which will be aired on Radio 2 in April, was the first live music event to break the law since it came into force in November. Westminster sought legal advice when a former adviser on the Licensing Act, discovered that Abbey Road doesn't have a licence for live entertainment despite assurances to the BBC that it had fulfilled all its legal requirements. However, Westminster council have told 6 Music it will not enforce the law, describing it as "a genuine oversight".Cllr Audrey Lewis, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Licensing, said: "The new licensing laws have ensured there is confusion about the status of many premises and what they now have a licence for.

"Abbey Road studios were not licensed for the Coldplay concert but, after talking to the premises, this appears to have been a genuine oversight.

She said local authorities and premises are still learning to live with the effects of the new Licensing laws, adding the council will be working closely with the Abbey Road to ensure they are fully licensed in the future.

A statement from the BBC said: "The recording of Coldplay at Abbey Road on 13 February 2006 for BBC Radio 2 Live & Exclusive was a private event.

"The BBC was notified by Abbey Road Studios, prior to the event taking place, that all legal requirements had been met."

Abbey Road told 6 Music they hosted the Coldplay concert "in good faith" that they had the appropriate licence.

Their official statement continued: "There was certainly no intention of holding an illegal event and if our licence is not what is required for this type of event, then it is a genuine mistake.

"We have a close relationship with Westminster Council on this and other matters which we value. In recent days we have received different advice from different departments within Westminster Council as to which licence is appropriate for our business.

"Once we have a definitive answer from Westminster Council, if there is a need to vary the licence, then of course we shall do so."

Recording studios look set to become the latest unintended casualties of the Government’s Licensing Act as experts warn they must get clearance costing hundreds of pounds a year to let people play live music on their premises.

The problem came to light following a gig performed by Coldplay at Abbey Road studios this month, attended by competition winners, which is set to be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in April.

Under the act, if entertainment is provided for profit or is put on in public the venue must have a licence. Westminster City Council’s legal team also believes that this show should have been licensed even though only winners of the competition - who did not pay for the tickets - were admitted.A statement from the council’s lawyers said: “If Coldplay had simply recorded some music at Abbey Road for later transmission by the BBC, it can safely be assumed that Abbey Road would be doing it for consideration and with a view to profit. Even if Abbey Road allowed the studio to be used free of charge that would not avoid the fact that the studio would need to be licensed for any other recording sessions carried out on a commercial basis.”

If the decision becomes council policy it is likely to affect all recording studios in the area and could influence the policies of other local authorities.

The Licensing Act, which came into force in November last year, has already caused huge problems for touring circuses, which now have to apply for separate licenses in every area they visit.

Live music campaigner Hamish Birchall told The Stage: “It illustrates just how wide the meaning of ‘public’ is under the act and confirms what a lot of people suspected - that recording studios may be licensable just for going about their ordinary business. If this becomes policy, musicians would have to double check whether a recording studio was correctly licensed.”

Licensing lawyer Dale Collins from solicitors Osborne Clarke, who has advised Arts Council England on the act, claimed Westminster’s interpretation of the law was correct.

He said: “Under the old legislation, local authorities usually treated events as private if a member of the public was unable to pay an admission fee and walk in off the street. But it is conceivable that a section of the public, as specified in the new act, includes those who won the online ticket competition and the celebrities present.

“Even if it is determined not to be public, as it appears the BBC hired the studio this suggests that the event organisers paid those providing the entertainment facility and hence falls within the catch-all provision of providing the entertainment ‘for consideration and with a view to profit.’ So they’re caught one way or the other.”

A BBC spokesperson said: “The recording of Coldplay at Abbey Road on 13 February 2006 for BBC Radio 2 Live & Exclusive was a private event. The BBC was notified by Abbey Road Studios, prior to the event taking place, that all legal requirements had been met.”

Canadian actress and star of Fox TV's Stacked, Pamela Anderson, Monday was named host of the 2006 JUNO Awards ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The April 2 awards ceremony at the Halifax Metro Centre will be broadcast by CTV.

Anderson was named The Most Powerful Canadian in Hollywood in 2005 by Canadian Business magazine, CTV and the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences noted in a news release Monday.

Canadian music rocks, Anderson in a statement. No matter where I am in the world I can listen to Canadian music and feel like I'm at home. This is going to be one kick-ass awards show.

The two-hour awards ceremony will feature performances by Bedouin Soundclash, Broken Social Scene, 2006 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Adams, Coldplay, Michael Buble and Nickelback. Additional performers will be announced soon.
