Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood.

Yet now based in the UK, after marrying Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, she says she doesn't miss the Hollywood lifestyle - and wonders why people are so confused by her decision to move here.

"The UK is so self-deprecating," she says. "They ask, 'Why would you want to live here? Well, my husband is here. I think the people are agreeable. I like the friends I have. And life here is not as hectic as New York or as vapid as Los Angeles."

Of course some things have changed for her. "My beer's not as cold as it used to be for a start. And I eat curry all the time. And I never thought I'd be sitting at home enjoying repeats of The Two Ronnies!"In many respects she shares a great deal in common with that other convert to the British way of life Madonna - Paltrow even went to the music star's wedding to film director Guy Ritchie in Scotland.

But unlike Ritchie, who has gone on record to say he doesn't like his wife's music, Paltrow is full of praise for her husband's work.

"I listen to Colplay," she asserts. "And my daughter is obsessed with Coldplay but she can't stop listening Madonna's Hung Up at the moment."

Clearly a family-orientated person, the star of Shakespeare in Love says she has calmed her working schedule since having daughter Apple in 2004.

But that hasn't stopped putting in a career best performance in her latest big screen outing, Proof.

Adapted from the play by David Auburn, Paltrow first took on the role at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002 - and gained rave reviews playing Catherine, the daughter of a mentally-ill maths genius who fears she may have inherited more than his talent for numbers.

Despite a strong cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Paltrow gives a powerfully raw performance and admits giving her feelings free reign on set made for an emotionally exhausting shoot.

"I was completely drained every day," she says. "When I was doing the play, I was using up all of my resources but that was a two-hour period and then it was finished. What I found so difficult about the film is that we would be doing a really emotional scene all day. It was hard to be in that state for hours and hours at a time.

"Of course, it didn't help that it was the first anniversary of my father's death," she adds. "And I was newly pregnant so I felt really sick."

With such a jumble of emotions going on inside Paltrow's head, sharing the screen with a screen legend like Anthony Hopkins, who plays Catherine's father, must have been a daunting experience?

"Probably in any other circumstances I would have felt more trepidation," she says. "But because I had done the play and I was so prepared I felt I knew what I was doing. I was just excited about it.

"I admire Anthony so much. He has so much power as an actor and he's a lovely guy. We had a great chemistry together. I definitely think it raises the game any time you work with someone who is better than you. I felt very lucky to work with him."

Born in 1972 to parents both in the film business - director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner - Paltrow says she was never in any doubt that she wanted to be an actress.

"I always wanted to be an actor from the time I knew what it was. But my parents were gently discouraging, they wanted me to do something more academic or more noble.

"But my father said that he never remembered a time when I didn't want to be an actor. It's funny because in some families there are children who are absolutely disinterested in what their parents do and then there are some that really connect with it. In my mind there was never any doubt that I was going to do it."

The theme of inheritance from one generation to the next is a key theme of Proof - as is the bond between father and daughter. So did she spot any similarities between her screen relationship and the one she shared with her late father?

"I think the only way in which it compares is that my father and I understood each other very well. We were similar creatures, and Catherine and her father are similar creatures. There's a lot of love between them, and it's the same with me and my father. But the similarities end there!"

And despite her rollercoaster ride on Proof, Paltrow says it was one of the best experiences of her career.

"It was exhilarating. I had spent such a long time being in the character's skin that I got to understand her experience in a lot of ways. I felt very blessed to be able to do the part in two different mediums. It made me feel that I never rehearse anything enough when I do a film. How can I ever do a film again now without doing a play of it first?

Coldplay singer Chris Martin isn't one for false modesty. He reckons their fourth album "is going to be the greatest piece of music ever made".

An arrogant claim, undoubtedly, but the band have sold more than five million copies of third album X&Y [pictured] since releasing it last year. And they arguably enjoy bigger success in America than any other British band has for around a decade.

Pop legend Prince is reportedly set to re-form the New Power Generation and make a surprise appearance at this week's Brit Awards.

According to a report in the News Of The World, the singer has been confirmed to perform at Wednesday's ceremony at Earl's Court in London.

The report claims the singer will play three tracks, but has not yet decided which hits from his back catalogue to include in his set.

Brit Awards organisers have still not confirmed Prince's appearance, but claim there are more last-minute performers to be announced for the ceremony.

Acts such as Coldplay, James Blunt, Kaiser Chiefs, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall, Gorillaz, Jack Johnson and Paul Weller have already been confirmed to appear at the show.

Chris Martin almost revealed all to 7,000 US fans on Tuesday night when his trousers fell down onstage.

The singer was mid-performance in Anaheim, California, when the wardrobe malfunction left him almost naked. Martin turned to his wife Gwyneth Paltrow in the VIP area and quipped, "You can only really get away with this if you've got an arse as good as Brad Pitt's".

The actress, who dated Pitt from 1995-1997, blushed at the joke as the rocker began singing an impromptu song about his backside. His baffled band members played along to the invented lyrics, which included, "It should never have come to pass that you caught sight of my ass".

After the performance, 28-year-old Martin said, "I realised I had to make a joke of it. Luckily it went down pretty well - just like my pants!"

Paul Weller says Coldplay "bore the shit" out of him.

The singer, who will collect a Lifetime Achievement at next week's Brit awards, also admitted he can't stand listening to 'You're Beautiful' singer James Blunt.

He stormed: "I don't get Coldplay and James Blunt. They bore the shit out of me. I've met Chris Martin and I don't want to slag him off because he's a lovely lad, but his music is too fucking bland."

Weller also lashed out at U2. The former Jam frontman insists he's never been a fan of the Irish rockers and can't understand why singer Bono is viewed as such a saintly figure. He told Britain's Arts and Books Review magazine: "Never liked them. That whole thing of Bono becoming the Pope, what the fuck is that all about? Pseudo-American rubbish."

Morris, who has two kids at Park Hill Elementary, is the chief auction contributor for the school fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Park Hill Golf Club, Colorado Boulevard and 35th Avenue. Auction items include: Forty Licks CD box set signed by the Rolling Stones, a Fender guitar signed by Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers signed CD set, a Van Morrison signed photo and tickets for the sold-out Coldplay show on Feb. 19.

“They’re all artists that I know and have played for me over the years,” Morris said. “They’re gracious enough to donate things.”

In addition to the silent auction, the evening includes dinner by Croc’s, two drinks and entertainment by Hazel Miller. Tickets: $25 at the door.

Britain’s Glastonbury music festival is the longest-running annual outdoor fest in the world. Happening almost yearly since the early 1970s, the phenomenon regularly attracts gigantic crowds, the coolest names in pop music, and, more recently, the cameras of acclaimed British director Julien Temple (“The Filth and the Fury,” “Absolute Beginners”).

For several years, Temple turned up at the fest to shoot bands and fans making rock history. The result is a documentary film, “Glastonbury,” due in theaters in April in Britain and later in the United States.

Not simply a concert on film, the movie explores the history, sociology, and meaning of the annual phenomenon. And crowd-pleasing performances by queer-inclusive bands like Scissor Sisters and gay audience favorites like David Bowie, Bjork, Coldplay, and Radiohead will make sure rock fans in other countries feel like they were actually there.

Back when actor Zach Braff of the medical sitcom "Scrubs" was shopping around a movie project, he sent out a screenplay that he'd written and, with it, a mix CD of songs he wanted to use in certain scenes.

The story, as told in show-business circles, is that several studio executives tossed the script and kept the CD.

As if tipping his hat, Braff wound up using a typically wistful Simon and Garfunkel song, "The Only Living Boy in New York," on his soundtrack. Rock band Coldplay, the late English folk singer Nick Drake, and former Men at Work singer Colin Hay also appear on the collection. But most of the 13 tracks are performed by artists with smaller followings: Thievery Corporation, Bonnie Somerville, Iron and Wine, and Brothers.The anecdote could be "myth," says Glen Brunman, chief of the Sony Music division that would eventually put out a more finished version of Braff's mix. But Brunman tells the tale anyway to make the point that Braff's faith was not misplaced. Audiences have not only embraced "Garden State," Braff's debut as a big-screen leading actor, screenwriter and director, but they're still buying the 2004 movie's soundtrack.

Anchored by countercultural bands such as the Shins, Remy Zero and Frou Frou, the "Garden State" album sold more than 650,000 copies in the United States in 2005, according to year-end figures from the research firm Nielsen SoundScan. It has passed the 1 million mark since its release 18 months ago and continues to sell 4,000 to 5,000 copies every week, Brunman says.

For a low-budget independent film with a boutique soundtrack, Braff's offbeat, melancholy love story has become something of a mainstream phenomenon.

"For a lot of kids, it was very a generational film," says singer/songwriter Cary Brothers, whose ballad "Blue Eyes" is in the movie and on the album.

Like "The Graduate" (1967) and "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "Garden State" makes virtual co-stars of its songs, which double as atmosphere and as commentary on scenes and characters.

In "Garden State," Braff plays Andrew, a depressed young man who fails at acting in Los Angeles and bottoms out on a dismal trip home to New Jersey. Then he meets a vivacious young woman, Sam, played by Natalie Portman. Their halting, sometimes comical progress as a couple is not unique to boy-meets-girl movies, but the depiction of it often has the submerged, unreal air of a dream.

The music Braff chose — from the abstract lines and swirls of the Shins' "Caring Is Creepy" to the whispery vocals of Frou Frou's "Let Go" — contributes to that sensation, and sometimes creates it.

Well before he found backing and a distributor for the movie, Braff was casting around for the right songs and thinking about movies such as "The Graduate," which showcased Simon and Garfunkel, and the oddball romance "Harold and Maude" (1971), featuring songs by Cat Stevens. Brothers says that he and Braff were "music-geek friends" in Los Angeles at the time and "talked a lot about those films."

Sony Music, a blockbuster-obsessed major label on most days, took a low-key approach to promoting the soundtrack, which was doing well by word of mouth in the summer and fall months of 2004 that "Garden State" spent in theaters.

Sony did give the soundtrack a push, however, through the "Garden State" DVD, which came out at the end of 2004. The DVD includes a music video of the Shins, a promotional spot for the soundtrack and, of course, all the music in the movie itself.

‘Talk’ available on vinyl on March 6

Borrowing the riff from Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love', the utterly hypnotic 'Talk' is driven by Will Champion's insistent, metronomic beats and Jonny Buckland's ethereal chiming guitars. However, the new 12" release sees the eight minutes Thin White Duke Mix of the track and on side two, the FrancoisK Dub mix and the over 11 minutes long Junkie XL Mix.

'Talk' came out as a single in November 2005 and was the third single to be taken from Coldplay's multi-platinum selling album 'X&Y'. The limited 12" version of the single follows the band's performance at the Brits, where Coldplay are nominated for not less than four awards.

The original version of 'Talk' appears on Coldplay's multi-platinum third album 'X&Y'.

The 12" single comes out on March 6th.

U2, Ireland's greatest non-drinkable export, was the surprise big winner at the 48th annual Grammy Awards on Wednesday at the Staples Center.

The adventurous, socially aware rock quartet pulled down a leading five trophies, including album of the year for "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," overshadowing leading nominees Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West, who came into the night with eight nods each.

"This is a big night for our band," U2 singer Bono said simply, holding aloft a golden gramophone at the performance-packed ceremony.

Coldplay did their best to drum up some steam, closing the show's first segment with a mesmerising performance of Talk [pictured], with singer Chris Martin striking out for the audience, grabbing outstretched hands as if to say, "C'mon, stay. It's going to get better."

Carey's career had been rejuvenated in the past year with a smash album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." The pop diva ended a 16-year Grammy drought with three trophies in the pre-televised portion of the ceremony, but lost twice to U2, once to Green Day for record of the year and once to former "'American Idol" Kelly Clarkson for best female pop vocal performance.

A slate of unexpected duets marked this year's telecast, typified by a pairing of jazz man Herbie Hancock and pop thrush Christina Aguilera, and U2 with Mary J. Blige. The 3 1/2 -hour show opened strong with Madonna lending vocals to the hit single "Feel Good Inc.," while the 3-D animated Gorillaz offered a take on Madonna's "Hung Up." The colorful mash-up had the blond pop star in skin-tight gear, appearing winded while making aerobics moves with backup dancers in tow. The cartoon characters, though, were just warming up.

Grammy is the night when the music industry puts on its happiest face, something that's getting increasingly harder at a chaotic time when CD sales have dwindled to a trickle, major labels have been ordered to pay huge fines in a pay-for-play scandal, and indie record stores are disappearing faster than gift bags backstage.

But the telecast pulled off some memorable moments. Sly Stone, one of rock's most notorious missing-in-action figures, actually turned up and spent a few minutes on stage, Paul McCartney performed on the show for the first time, and the audience was asked to "make some noise" for Delta blues legend Robert Johnson, dead now for 68 years.

Film director Martin Scorsese, famously snubbed year after year by the Academy Awards, came to pick up his first Grammy, as director of the Bob Dylan documentary, "No Direction Home," in the long-form music video category.

In a conservative climate, politics, with one notable exception, was shut out of the glitzy celebration of pop consumption. After performing his mournful Grammy-winning song, "Devils and Dust," Bruce Springsteen said, "Bring 'em home," and walked off stage. Applause was moderate.

Tension was in short supply, however. The curtain-raising excitement of the Madonna mash-up evaporated when Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys struggled with an a cappella reading of Wonder's "Higher Ground," veering so far out of key the song was last heard heading up the Grapevine. The pair then handed Kelly Clarkson a trophy for female pop vocal performance for "Since U Been Gone," triggering the evening's only visible tears.

It got better. Singer-pianist Legend, who won three trophies, sang his romantic ballad "Ordinary People" at the keyboard, backed by strings, although some kind of silvery electronic device plugged into his ears diverted attention from the performance during long close-ups.

It took a half-hour of Grammy time which is equivalent to dog years for viewers before the first "hat act" made itself known in the form of a standard mall rocker from country band Sugarland. The group handed out the country album trophy to Alison Krauss and Union Station for "Lonely Runs Both Ways."

U2 next appeared for an exciting "Vertigo" on a smoke-filled stage, segueing into the spiritual "One" in a screechy duet with an out-of-her-element Blige, who also seemed headed for the Grapevine.

Top nominee West made his first trip to the stage in the televised portion of the ceremony to pick up the best rap album award for "Late Registration." Wearing black leather gloves and white dinner jacket, the rapper-producer plucked a large piece of paper from a pocket and reeled off a litany of names that included God, mom and "my publicist imagine how hard that's gotta be."

A very pregnant Gwen Stefani and Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong awarded U2 its third Grammy of the night for best rock album for "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." Bono's speech was a riddle: "Being in a rock band is like running away with the circus. You always think you're gonna be the ringmaster, but you end up the clown, the freak. But that's OK, because you're in show business."

So that's what he and George W. talk about in the Oval Office.

Another telecast highlight was provided by McCartney, who made his first-ever Grammy appearance. "I finally passed the audition," he joked before picking up his famous violin-shaped Beatles bass for one of the show's hardest-hitting, most exciting moments, a thundering "Helter Skelter."

Awards show perennials the Black Eyed Peas lined up across the stage to hand out the best male R&B performance trophy to Legend for "Ordinary People," a song, he explained, that was a hard sell at first since "it didn't sound like anything else on R&B radio," primarily because it doesn't use drums.

But nothing, though, could compare to the spectacle that came next. Carey, in the throes of gospel fever, backed by a full choir, sang in such a high register that the crystal in the dressing rooms must have trembled.

Clarkson felt the spirit, too, thanking "God and Jesus," but held back the tears as she won the pop vocal album derby for "Breakaway."

A tribute to Stone, featuring an ultra-rare and painfully short appearance by the troubled rock-soul great himself, had a bevy of famous faces including Joss Stone, Fantasia, Legend and, improbably, members of Aerosmith covering a medley of Stone hits such as "Family Affair," "If You Want Me to Stay" and "Everyday People," in a reminder of one of pop's most potent back catalogs.

The autograph-decorated piano will travel across the country to select Hilton properties and music sites in major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Calif. and New York, N.Y.

The grand piano was generously donated to the GRAMMY Foundation by Gibson/Baldwin.

Chris Martin has apologised to his US fans for the out-of-control state of his hair. He says his curly locks become wild during American tours because he refuses to get a haircut by anyone except his UK-based stylist.

He explains, "I look like Michael Bolton right now. The problem is my hairdresser is back in England while I'm out here on tour."

Martin was especially wary of his crop in Los Angeles, because the city's citizens are so well-presented. He adds, "This is a city where everyone has headshot photos of themselves and so I know I'm definitely going to get judged on my appearance."

Music's Biggest Night has finally arrived, with the Grammy Awards taking place tonight, February 8th, in Los Angeles.
