Grammy-winning British band Coldplay will play at this year's Juno Awards, alongside Canadian rockers Nickelback and the crooning Michael Buble.

"Our celebration of the Canadian music industry and its talent continues to attract world-renowned artists to our stage," Melanie Berry, president of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, said in a statement Tuesday.

The academy organizes the event, and will be announcing more performers as the date draws closer.

"Wait until you see what else we have in store," said Susanne Boyce, president of programming at CTV, which broadcasts the event live. These three world-class acts underscore how the 2006 Juno Awards continues to grow in both prestige and popularity as Canada's pre-eminent awards broadcast."

Coldplay broke into popular consciousness in 2000 with their hit single "Yellow," and is preparing for a second North American tour to back up their recent album X&Y, which debuted at number one in Canada and 31 other countries worldwide. Their current single, "Talk," is doing well on the Canadian charts. The band will take a break from their tour schedule to play at the Junos, said singer Chris Martin. "Our Canadian fans are extraordinary -- we love Canada," he said in the statement.

The acts announced Tuesday are the first that have been confirmed for the 35th annual Junos, the country's most prominent music awards ceremony. The event will be held April 2 in Halifax at the Metro Centre, a smaller venue than recent Juno locales, which promises to provide an intimate setting. The nominations for awards will be announced Feb. 15 in Toronto.

Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon has reportedly been approached to present an award at next month’s Brit Awards.

The Legally Blonde star could be joining the likes of Madonna, Take That and Paris Hilton to dish out the gongs. Reese is movie world hot property at present. Last week she picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Walk The Line - the biopic of country legend Johnny Cash. When organisers for the Brits discovered her love of guitar bands and that she would be in the UK to promote her new film, they couldn’t wait to get in touch.

Reese has a huge fanbase as well as bringing some Tinseltown glamour to the ceremony. If she accepts the offer, she can sit back, relax and listen to a glittering line-up of musical talent including Gorillaz, Jack Johnson, Coldplay, Kanye West and the Kaiser Chiefs.

It's been far too long since we've had any real new releases to talk about, but that all changes this week. In fact, if anything, there are too many new records to talk about.

The list begins with Cat Power's newest effort, The Greatest. Clearly inspired by Feist's Let It Die and Smog's A River Ain't Too Much To Love, the new Chan Marshall disc isn't as biting as You Are Free, but the indie queen's new direction is a solid one.

Richard Ashcroft [pictured] is back with Keys To The World. Those of you hoping the lanky former Verve frontman would go back in the direction of his drug-soaked former life are in for some disappointment. This is upbeat, piano-driven pop that makes it fairly obvious that Ashcroft has been hanging with Coldplay’s Chris Martin pretty frequently of late.Brit-pop survivors Starsailor are making a return with On The Outside. The droney rockers are a little less miserable than in their previous incarnations. Possibly looking at the dance-y state of affairs in the U.K. has led them to stop moping.

Surprise, surprise, Bob Pollard is back. Bet you thought it was going to take the former Guided By Voices frontman years to assemble his first post-band solo record. Well, probably not. From A Compound Eye has been finished since early last year, but between finding a new label (Merge) and purging every last bit of GBV material from the vault in 2005, it was held until this week.

Not one, but two Rilo Kiley members have solo projects out this week. Jenny Lewis' Rabbit Fur Coat sees the singer moving in an alt.country direction with help from Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, M. Ward and Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes. Blake Sennett, meanwhile, is back with the sophomore effort from The Elected, Sun, Sun, Sun.

Other Tuesday releases include Marty Casey And The Lovehammers' self-titled debut, Saint Etienne's Tales From Turnpike House, Duncan Sheik's White Limousine and Yellowcard's Lights And Sounds.

Animated band Gorillaz have been signed up to play at this year's Brit Awards.

Damon Albarn's band are the latest act to be announced along with US artist Jack Johnson. Jack, whose music combines blues, folk and hip-hip, is a huge name over in the States and the Brits is where he will be making his UK debut trying to wow British music lovers.

BPI and Brit Awards organising committee chairman Peter Jamieson said: "The addition of Gorillaz and Jack Johnson to the bill means this year's show will be one of the strongest yet. This is a show not to be missed," he continued.

The two acts join a long list of music talents lined up to entertain the crowds including Kanye West, Coldplay and the Kaiser Chiefs. Gorillaz have two nominations for British Group and British Album for Demon Days.

"Obviously we're very pleased," said the band's drummer Nick Hodgson after learning of his band's nominations. "It all sounds brilliant. It's great to be up for the album and live awards. It means people appreciate what you do."

With the polls now open so you can vote for the final results, Hodgson added he was looking forward to the February 23 ceremony. "I hope people vote for us because we've never won anything we've been nominated for before," he explained.

However the Kaisers will face stiff competition in every category with the likes of Oasis, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys all picking up nominations.

This weekend's Sundance Film Festival in Utah sees the long awaited first showing of the documentary film 'Glastonbury', which features footage from the last 30 years of Europe's most famous festival.

The film's director Julien Temple has spent the past few years collecting footage from every single Glastonbury Festival, ranging from professional outtakes from the film Nicolas Roeg made about the 1971 event to amateur home videos collected from the attendees themselves, often retrieved from forgotten corners of closets and attics.

The film interweaves images of impromptu art happenings, skeptical local residents, shots of energetic young music fans, and stirring performances by music legends - all the things that Glastonbury is best known for.

Glasto boss Michael Eavis has already seen it and told Virtual Festivals: "It's very bold, very brave, and will raise some eyebrows. And it's very good, Julien's done a good job."Despite being unable to make it out to Utah for the film's premier, Michael revealed that someone would be there on Glastonbury Festivals' behalf.

He said: "I've got a guy going out to assess the reaction to the film at the party afterwards. If it goes down well then it could be a huge success in the States, which would be brilliant. But I've told him only to ring me and wake me up if it's good news. You don't want to wake up to bad news do you? My wife's a midwife, so if we get a call in the middle of the night it'll be good news either way; either someone will be having a baby or the film will have done well!"

The Sundance Film Festival is a proven springboard for independent movies. Last year it featured Brit flick 'On A Clear Day' and surprise box-office smash 'March Of The Penguins'.

Director Julien Temple previously had one of his film's showcased at the festival, his Sex Pistols documentary 'The Filth And The Fury', back in 2000.

He's also famed for producing music videos for The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Scissor Sisters.

'Glastonbury' has been entered into the World Documentary competition category at the film festival and will have to fight off the challenge of Israeli border police and women prisoners in Surrey - the subjects of two of its main rivals.

The film is set be premiered in the UK in April.

"Coachella," a documentary on the Coachella Valley's most important two-day tourism event, arrives at the Regal Palm Springs Stadium 9 on Tuesday for a one-night-only screening of a film that is generated raves.

Variety calls it, "An excellent overview of the ambiance and showcased talent at arguably the best annual U.S. rock festival."

The film, which premiered Thursday at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, features some of the most important artists to play in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival since its debut in 1999 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. It features one song each from 25 artists including Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the White Stripes, Bjork, the Pixies, Oasis, Morrissey, the Mars Volta, Kool Keith and Prodigy.

It also captures the annual festival's ambiance by showing the uniqueness of its fans and their interaction with the performers and the interactive art pieces that help define the festival.Promoter Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice, which produces the film and the festival, said first-time director Drew Thomas and his crew began filming the festivals to document the bands in its first year. He said they began trying to capture the flavor of Coachella after deciding to seek a theater release last year.

"We think it represents what going to Coachella is like," Tollett said. "That's the main thing we're trying to get across - not necessarily to put it next to other festival films throughout the years - (but) the feeling of going to the show."

Festival documentaries have been rare since MTV began producing musical biographies, and record labels and publishers became more proprietary about the music and images of their artists.

"Coachella" doesn't include appearances by such major past acts as the Cure, the Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Moby, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and Beck, although Beck and QOTSA leader Josh Homme are interviewed in the film.

Tollett said that was only partly due to licensing problems.

"It's a combination of what we were able to film, what we could afford to film, what film came out that wasn't dark," he said. "It mostly just comes down to your resources."

Goldenvoice wasn't able to secure last year's headliners, Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails, even though Coachella gave their most recent CDs a huge boost.

"It's been difficult," Tollett said. "No one's been hard to deal with, there's just been a lot of bureaucracy. I didn't realize how slow that it was."

But "Coachella" captures the multidimensional feel of the event, starting with its brief history on the east valley.

The film starts with reggae rapper Spearhead speaking intelligently about the war in Iraq, which is representative of the level of discourse at the festival.

This festival isn't just a lot of ranting and raving about youth-oriented liberal politics.

The early segments also capture the fun and confusion of the early hours of the event. Viewers see a concertgoer who has lost a friend who has all her money. There's a woman who says she was trying to find a hotel online and "everyone was laughing" at her futile efforts. And there's a guy walking around with his head in a small aquarium of water, reflecting the need to have lots of water on the hot Coachella days.

The melodious Belle & Sebastian also are seen messing around on the song, "The Boy With the Arab Strap," which is typical of daytime acts having trouble connecting to the hot and restless daytime audiences.

The film begins to pick up when Thomas shows some cinematic style in capturing Cut Chemist and Nu Mark in a DJ duel that creates a ripple through a tent audience. That provides just a taste of what it's like in those sauna-like tents, where the music is so powerful it's impossible to stand still no matter how hot it is.

Perry Farrell, the Jane's Addiction frontman who has played every Coachella, makes an important point about another of the festival's secrets to success. While you may not be able to trust radio and most music providers to offer a consistently high level of music, "you can put your faith in Coachella," he says.

The film doesn't build to a linear climax and that, too, is consistent with Coachella. The great music spreads out, adding canvases to fill by showcasing diverse musical genres. As at the festival, if one genre doesn't thrill, there's another down the way.

That's how this festival film differs from other festival films such as the "Monterey Pop" DVD, which reveals how rock became a cultural force, but features more songs by the Mamas and the Papas than Janis Joplin.

"Coachella" is filled with historical moments in its two hours. It shows the performance by the Pixies in 2004 that cemented their place in pop music history. There's also the reunited Iggy & the Stooges performing "I Wanna Be Your Dog" as if they were 30 years younger.

And it sidesteps the flaws of other festival films by depicting a representative slice of life without turning it into a showcase for one particular act.

"Coachella" deserves a place in the pantheon of great festival documentaries, although Tollett says that wasn't the film's point.

"You can't re-create those films," he said. "You have to do the best you can based on what your show is."

Halton Council have given permission for a three day music event to take place at the Spike Island park in Widnes this year.

Councillor Rob Polhill said: "This event is set to be the biggest concert here in ten years and it is appropriate that it is taking place at Spike Island, where the Stone Roses played their famous concert."

The festival is believed to be taking place on 27-29 May with former Stone Rose Ian Brown (pictured), Oasis and Coldplay rumoured to headline.

Spike Island, a former industrial site on the River Mersey, was etched into rock history on 9 June, 1990, when The Stone Roses performed there at the height of their heyday.

The Black Eyed Peas were the big winners at the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, France, on Saturday night, scooping the Best International Group and Best International Album accolades.

However, the Where Is The Love hitmakers' triumph was over-shadowed by the absence of Madonna who was scheduled to attend the ceremony, and even failed to record a video message to accept her Best International Female Artist gong.

British singer Robbie Williams was named Best International Male Artist and performed a barnstorming live version of his hit single Tripping.

James Blunt was named Best International Newcomer, Shakira won the Best International Song award for La Tortura and Coldplay singer Chris Martin [pictured] presented Sir Bob Geldof with the Humanitarian Award.

Speaking in French, Chris told the star-studded audience, "I don't live nearby but I would have travel miles and miles to have the honour to present this award to a real hero. José Mourinho [pictured] has given his backing to a comedy record that impersonates him, because part of the sales proceeds will go to Chelsea Football Club's official charity CLIC Sargent.

DJ Mario Rosenstock is famous in his native Ireland for mimicking leading football personalities, which he puts to music. Record company EMI Group plans to provide content for German media giant Bertelsmann's new Internet platform for downloading and sharing music, movies and games, it said on Friday.

EMI signed the first pan-European deal with arvato mobile, a unit of Bertelsmann's services and technology arm arvato, to offer end customers access to 300,000 music tracks from artists including Coldplay [pictured] and Norah Jones.

The software platform, called GNAB, allows makers and distributors of music, games, movies and ringtones to offer legal downloads of large files to clients under their own brands."GNAB is an innovative milestone on the way to a new digital download era," Bernhard Ribbrock, chief executive of arvato mobile, said in a joint statement with EMI.

"Fully authorised P2P (peer-to-peer) will enable consumers to access more music, allow retailers to offer interesting music products, provide new revenue streams for EMI Music and strengthen arvato mobile's position," he added.

Sharing legally copied and bootlegged music and movie files is hugely popular among Internet users and has turned services such as eDonkey and KaZaA into big hubs for music downloads while the music industry has stood on the sidelines.

But easy-to-use services such as computer maker Apple's iTunes have let the music industry discover its sympathy for music downloads and led to a surge in legal online music sales.

A spokesman for arvato mobile said that the firm already had content agreements for individual countries with other music firms, including the world's second-largest music label Sony BMG, which Bertelsmann co-owns with Sony.

Coldplay are set to headline a music festival at Spike Island, scene of an infamous concert by The Stone Roses, according to reports.

The band have apparently been approached to play the three-day event in Widnes (near Liverpool), as have Oasis and former Roses frontman Ian Brown. Apparently Halton Council have approved an application to put the festival on, with organisers scheduling the three-day event for this coming May.

Local councillor Rob Polhill commented: "This event is set to be the biggest concert here in ten years and it is appropriate that it is taking place at Spike Island, where The Stone Roses played their famous concert."

According to Gigwise, organisers have earmarked Brown, Oasis and Coldplay as possible headliners for the closing Sunday of the festival. The Stone Roses famously hosted an enormous Spike Island gathering at the height of their fame, on May 27, 1990.

Meanwhile, Coldplay's "X&Y" will apparently be named the biggest selling album in the world of 2005 in the coming days. The band's globe-straddling third LP is understood to have outsold last year's releases from Mariah Carey, Green Day, 50 Cent, Madonna and the Black Eyed Peas to claim the prize.

Coldplay [pictured] have been left fuming after learning tickets for their shows in Las Vegas has been selling for a whopping £700 ($1,260) online.

Ticket prices for the February 3 concert at Sin City's MGM Grand started at £28 ($50), but some internet sites have been selling seats for up to 25 times their face value.

A source said: "Coldplay never charge much for gig tickets because they want them to go to genuine fans. They are very strict about it. They could charge loads more for them, like many other acts do. But the last thing they want is for fans to be priced out of going to their gigs. Unfortunately there is very little the band can do to stop greedy scalpers from buying loads of tickets then flogging them on the net. The sites that offer these expensive tickets are not part of the official Coldplay site."

Tickets for the gig at the 17,000 capacity venue sold out in just seven minutes.

Chelsea Football Club is believed to be considering a £400m bid for the Earls Court exhibition centre in order to relocate from their Stamford Bridge home. A move to a new site would help the champions compete more seriously in revenue terms with Arsenal, who moves to their new 60,000 Ashburton Grove home at the beginning of next season, and Manchester United, whose Old Trafford capacity will shortly be increased to 75,000.

According to sources close to the club, the Premiership leaders have been debating a move for several months after running into problems in attempting to extend the 42,500 capacity at the Bridge, which has been their home for 100 years. Increasing the capacity of Stamford Bridge to around 50,000 remains the club's preferred option but logistical difficulties have stymied that plan.

There would be problems if Chelsea try to redevelop Earls Court because at present the site's planning permission allows it to be used only as an exhibition centre and music venue, where Coldplay have performed several times in the past. A plan to build a sports stadium would require a change of use clause agreed by both Hammersmith and Kensington & Chelsea councils.Earls Court, along with the Olympia arena, was recently put on the market by St James Capital and the company has appointed advisers from UBS, the Swiss investment bank, to conduct an auction for the properties. The Earls Court site, which appears a favoured option for some at the club, is only 15 minutes' walk from Stamford Bridge and is well served by public transport.

If the club were to move, it could partially fund the development of a new stadium by selling Stamford Bridge, which could, some say, be worth more than £500m. A redevelopment of that site could look similar to the scheme at Highbury, where the current stadium is being converted into a residential complex that includes luxury apartments as well as a certain amount of affordable housing in accordance with local planning guidelines.

Since Roman Abramovich took over the club and rescued it from near bankruptcy, his efforts to increase the capacity at Stamford Bridge have been thwarted by problems relating to the exits from the stadium which is surrounded by a cemetery and a property estate as well as a main road. The exits all lead on to the Fulham Road and the police and local council believe this would become too congested and therefore unsafe were the crowds to be any larger than they are at present.

A source close to UBS said last night that it has had approaches for the two sites but none yet from Chelsea.

Chelsea said last night: "We would like to increase the capacity at Stamford Bridge and ideally to a figure of just over 50,000 but there are constraints. Only after all possible scenarios for the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge are exhausted can a debate start about other options."

Chelsea have had sell-outs at most Premiership matches this season but some Champions' League games have been poorly attended, with some sections of the supporter base blaming high ticket prices.

Chelsea believe they have been linked with several moves in the past because property sellers have used their supposed interest to try to get a buying frenzy going. Last night the club said: "There has been speculation linking us with a whole variety of sites in London including Wembley, the Olympic Stadium at Stratford, White City, Battersea Power Station, Earls Court and the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital."

A move to Earls Court - which is walking distance from Stamford Bridge - would be relatively popular with fans who would be furious if the club decided to move further afield.

Unlike at Arsenal, whose move to Ashburton Grove has restricted money currently available for players, in Chelsea's case, with Abramovich behind them, there would be no such financial considerations to take into account.
