Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow married Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin because he reminded her of her late father Bruce.

According to contactmusic.com, Paltrow [pictured] says she was struck by the resemblance when she was having a chat with Madonna about love and loss.

She says: "She (Madonna) said to me that I once told her that I wasn't ready to pick the right person because I wasn't ready to replace my father as the main man in my life. It's true. I feel, like I was never really with anybody who was a real contender."

But Paltrow knew she found her future husband when she met Martin because he was so similar to her father.

She adds: "He's got the same blue eyes and curly hair and the long, long muscles."

Coldplay were crowned kings of 2005 last night after scooping TWO top Bizarre Awards.

Thousands of readers voted for Coldplay as Best Band and also named X&Y Best Album. Together with Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman, Chris Martin was thrilled to win. When I met up with the group, he said: “It means so much to us to get these awards because they really count. It means a lot when you know it is voted for by The Sun’s millions of readers. Thank you to everyone who voted for us.”

It has also been an amazing year for JAMES BLUNT, whose massive hit You’re Beautiful scooped Best Single.

As I presented him with his award, he said: “Thanks so much for all the support Bizarre has given me this year.

I’m ecstatic to win Best Single and it has made my year. Please say thanks to your readers.”

JOE SWASH was once again voted Best Actor for his role as Mickey Miller in EastEnders. The show itself beat Coronation Street to Best Soap.

WILL YOUNG was voted Best Male by a mile and said of his gong: “I’ll put this up in my study along with all my other awards. It’s fantastic to get Best Male, so thanks to all my fans for voting for me.”

MADONNA took my Best Female prize, and you voted for OASIS in the Best Rock category.

I appeared on the CHRIS MOYLES show on Radio 1 yesterday to present him with his sixth Bizarre Award for Best DJ.

He joked: “Thank you for fixing the vote for me to win, Victoria.”

The toughest category of all was the coveted Bizarre Shagger Of The Year. DAVID WALLIAMS, CALUM BEST and ABI TITMUSS were all up there, but in pole position at the end of the voting was Formula One ace JENSON BUTTON.

Well done, Jenson — I know how desperate you were to win.

There was only one contender for Caner Of The Year — and the award went to COCAINE KATE MOSS.

And her on-off boyfriend PETE DOHERTY landed the Bizarre ASBO Award — as voted for by you.

BRITNEY SPEARS wins my Sack The Stylist gong for her hideous taste in clothing — not to mention the fact she doesn’t seem to own a bra.

Coldplay are to appear live on UK radio today and will make the one-off performance available to watch over Christmas.

The band are set to perform a 'live lounge' for Jo Whiley [pictured left, with Will] on BBC Radio One, which will feature a selection of classic tracks from the group plus a festive song. Apparently the five-track show will also be filmed and then screened on digital TV from December 23, reports the NME.

The set will be accessible via 'on demand' digital TV and available to watch until January 6, following similar initiatives for the Gorillaz and The Strokes in 2005.

Now that the final traces of Oasis fans have been politely cleared from the Odyssey, an audience of a different nature will be arriving tonight.

The latest sell-out gig in a bonanza week for the venue is Coldplay, with Rod Stewart still set for a Friday festive frolic before Christmas.

And if John Lennon once told the Royal Variety audience in the posh seats to rattle their jewellery, maybe Coldplay frontman Chris Martin will get his devotees to shake their charity wristbands.

Coldplay's social conscience is well documented, and if their setlist is like the other dates on their UK mini tour, which started in Newcastle upon Tyne on December 15 and finishes in Belfast tonight, it will open with Square One and feature Politik as song two.Politik was the song which the band contributed to a compilation CD in aid of Amnesty International, an organisation close to the band's heart, as Scottish bass-player Guy Berryman explains: "Anyone in our position has a certain responsibility. Odd though it may seem to us, a lot of people read what we're saying, see us on TV, buy our records and read the sleeves, and that can be a great platform.

"You can make people aware of issues. It isn't very much effort for us at all, but if it can help people, then we want to do it." Devon frontman Chris Martin defines the finely-measured ethos of Coldplay, their music and their causes.

"We were trying to say that there is an alternative, that you can try to be catchy without being slick, poppy without being pop, and you can be uplifting without being pompous," he says.

"Because we're sometimes playing quieter stuff, it's hard to sound like we're trying to change things, but we wanted to be a reaction against soulless rubbish." Will those chart veterans be strong enough to deny the X-Factor winner his debut (Christmas) number one, we don’t know. Remember if you can a time, just a few short years ago, when Coldplay weren't the world's biggest megastars. A time when being a fan of Coldplay was a pretty smug affair. Private knowledge that you were listening to some of the most perfect songs every written.

And to think, just like so many great things before, it all began in Manchester. "Thanks for having us back in the city where we were discovered," said lead singer Chris Martin at the start of a stunning concert at the M.E.N. Arena last night.

"It's taken us three years to come back to Manchester but finally we've made it. It's a place we signed six years ago so I hope if there are any A&R men here tonight we're still good enough to give a record deal to."

Michael Stipe [pictured] was in Austin, Texas Friday for Coldplay's taped performance on venerable music program Austin City Limits, where early reports indicated he might join Chris Martin and his bandmates onstage for a song. Coldplay is currently making the rounds in support of their Grammy-nominated record, X&Y.

PBS plans to air the hour-long Austin City Limits concert on December 17th. Please stay tuned for details as they develop.

Chris Martin avoided injury when his BMW X5 hit another car in London recently.

The environment-friendly Coldplay singer had to dole out his particulars after his huge gas-guzzling monster left a ding on a Honda. It was a minor shunt on a busy road near Belsize Park. Nobody was hurt.

And he wasn’t too keen to trade details in the street in London’s Belsize Park, staying put in the driver’s seat as the other motorist talked to him through the window. Gwyneth Paltrow is also thought to have been in the vehicle.

Coldplay are renowned for solid performances of which they held up to last night [19th December] backed by an impressive visual cascade of video streaming and lights which bolstered the energetic performance from the band.

Chris Martin revelled in the North East's enthusiasm, remarking on several occasions how amazed he was with the crowd's response.

Resembling Gollum, from The Lord of the Rings, he leaped and bounded around the stage with acrobatic ease and with almost every song he played the piano like a possessed Liberace.

Coldplay have revealed they are disappointed with only releasing three albums.

The band have said that compared with The Beatles' work rate, they are a lot slower and are starting to panic.

"We just love being creative," bassist Guy Berryman said. "When we're out on the road, it's amazing to play live but we're really missing what we do best, which is creating. We've been together for almost ten years now and we've only made three albums."

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, he added: "When you look at people like The Beatles who knocked out a couple a year, it sort of makes us start to panic a little bit. So we're just desperate to get back into the studio."

Coldplay claim that their fourth album will be very different from the first three

Coldplay say that they’re eager to get back into the studio but are hampered by their extensive touring schedule.

Speaking to 6music band bassist Guy Berryman [pictured] said: "I know a lot of bands say this all the time, but our next record is going to be really quite different from the last three because I think it would be boring for us and everybody else if we did another record in the same vein as the last three.

"It's been said before that we really view these first three albums as part of a trilogy and it's now time to move on. We feel that we don't really have to prove ourselves any more to people - and that gives you an amazing amount of creative freedom to do stuff."

Berryman admitted that they’re considering using more ‘electronic stuff’, but insisted that it won’t be too introspective. He added: "There will always be songs and melodies, it won't be an abstract Tangerine Dream noodling affair!"

Brit Awards, Grammys and platinum discs are all very well but Chris Martin has finally been given the accolade he covets most – a Blue Peter badge.

The Coldplay frontman was given a gold version of the honour in a surprise presentation by show host Konnie Huq. Chris, who works tirelessly for the charity Make Trade Fair, was thrilled.

Speaking exclusively to me backstage at Earls Court, where the band played a triumphant show on Thursday, Chris said: "I’ve always wanted a criminal record and a Blue Peter badge — now I’ve got both. I was very honoured to get the gold badge and I love Konnie Huq so I was pleased to meet her. I was on the show to present an award to a 12-year-old lad who had done lots of work for Make Trade Fair and they surprised me by giving me the badge."Mild-mannered Chris is the last rock star you would imagine to have a criminal record, but his "scuffles" with photographers have got him in trouble with the boys in blue.

Chris took baby daughter Apple to meet Blue Peter presenters Matt Baker, Liz Barker, Gethin Jones, Zoe Salmon and Konnie. But the presenters turned the tables and gave him the top-ranking badge that is reserved for people who have achieved greatness.

The show decided to commend his hard work with Make Trade Fair — which works to give poor nations a better deal on exports — and Live 8.

Chris joins an impressive gallery of stars who have gold badges. The show — which has been running for 47 years — has previously honoured David Beckham, Madonna, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Ewan McGregor and The Queen. The badge is a brooch in the shape of the programme’s ship logo.

Chris has been wearing his with pride ever since he got it: "It’s one of the best things I’ve ever received."

Oasis and Coldplay released their latest albums within seven days of each other; they end the year with a tour that finds them performing within seven days of each other.

Coldplay are winding down the European leg of their extensive world tour, in front of never-ending throngs of cooing fans.

Coldplay, play their last London gig at Earl's Court on Friday night, before jumping on their eco-coach to Newcastle, Manchester and then Belfast for the finale in five days time. The melodic arena rockers then have a well-earned month off following their six week's of slogging, before turning their attentions to the US towards the end of the January.

However, following last night's performance at Earl's Court, some are saying the boys should really take it easy on their break, after Martin and his clan appeared to be tired onstage. Opening tracks such as Square One, Politik, Yellow and Speed of Sound were energetically performed and got the show off to a rip-roaring start.

However, a lull followed as the group appeared to tire badly, and only a rousing The Scientist was performed with any real gusto during a sometimes turgid eight-song stretch. Clocks and Talk eventually regained the crowd's attention for the gig's conclusion, but one was left feeling that on another night, the foursome would have had more to give.

Rumours that Coldplay would be releasing a country album were dismissed today by bassist Guy Berryman.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music's Steve Lamacq, Berryman [pictured] said: "We're all big fans of Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons and Willie Nelson - but I don't think we could ever get away with doing a country album."

Berryman did give some indications of where Coldplay would go with their fourth album.

"I know a lot of bands say this all the time, but our next record is going to be really quite different from the last three because I think it would be boring for us and everybody else if we did another record in the same vein as the last three. It's been said before that we really view these first three albums as part of a trilogy and it's now time to move on. We feel that we don't really have to prove ourselves any more to people and that gives you an amazing amount of creative freedom to do stuff."

However, many in the west London venue seemed unimpressed as the group appeared to tire badly and only The Scientist was performed with real intention during an eight-song stretch which lacked the same level of intensity. Clocks and Talk eventually hauled the crowd back on its feet for the show's conclusion but the globally famous foursome would be among the first to admit that their performance lacked the passion and atmosphere of previous gigs.
