Robbie Williams has sold the most albums in the UK so far this century - notching up sales of 6.3m.

Coldplay [pictured] are at number two, with sales of 6.2m albums, while Dido is in third place, with 5.7m albums.

The figures are based on albums sold in the UK from 1 January 2000 to 11 October 2005, but exclude greatest hits, live albums and downloads. They were compiled by the Official UK Charts Company for C4 show The Biggest Selling Artists of the 21st Century.

Eminem and Westlife are fourth and fifth respectively, while the Top 10 is completed by Norah Jones, Blue, Anastacia, the Stereophonics and Oasis. Kylie Minogue, Will Young and Craig David are just outside the Top 10.Williams is currently number one in the UK album charts with his latest release, Intensive Care - his sixth solo studio album. The 31-year-old first entered the chart as a solo artist in August 1996 with his cover of George Michael's single Freedom. He released his debut solo album, Life Thru A Lens, in October 1997. It was followed a year later by I've Been Expecting You.

Williams has released four more studio albums since then - Sing When You're Winning (2000), Swing When You're Winning (2001), Escapology (2002) and latest release Intensive Care. He has also released a live album Live At Knebworth (2003) and a greatest hits collection (2004) but neither of these counted towards the millennium chart. The live album is the only one to date which failed to top the British album chart.

Coldplay are battling to avoid a messy split caused by growing rifts within the band.

Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion [pictured] and Guy Berryman are currently enjoying the success of their third album X&Y - but bad tempers and big egos are threatening to tear the group apart. A gruelling tour schedule to promote the album means they spend all their time together, which isn't helping.

Will Champion reveals, "We're all getting on each other's tits at the moment. I suppose that's bands all over."

Channel 4 are showing two weeks of music programmes leading up to the broadcast of the Hall Of Fame ceremony on November 17th.

This Sunday (6th November) will see a three hour special featuring a countdown of the biggest selling albums since 2000. The show starts at 8pm. Coldplay will feature three times with Parachutes, A Rush Of Blood To The Head [pictured] and X&Y. But where will the albums finish?

Madonna, the queen of pop herself, kicked off the MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 in style by emerging from a giant glitterball amid an army of hunks to perform her latest single Hung Up. Clad in a purple leather jacket and, er, not much else she whipped the crowd in Lisbon into a frenzy, and one lucky member of the audience walked home with her sunglasses after she hurled them into the crowd.

Host Borat Sagdiyev then took to the stage, perhaps immediately breaking up a longstanding friendship with Madonna by labelling her a “transvestite”. Let’s hope black belt Guy Ritchie wasn’t watching…

First up was the Best Album award and Green Day fought off competition from the likes of 50 Cent and Coldplay to snatch the prestigious gong.

Best Pop quickly followed, with Sugababes on hand to present the award. The Black Eyed Peas scooped the gong, with Gorillaz and Gwen Stefani among the disappointed.

Following an electric performance from Coldplay, Snoop Dogg walked away with the Best Hip-Hop award. The ever-controversial Pussycat Dolls – who in the build up to the ceremony said they would like to snog Madonna – then performed their massive hit Don’t Cha.

But it was already starting to look like Green Day’s night when the punk rockers returned to the stage to collect the Best Rock award.

An extraordinary feat of technology then saw Gorillaz take to the stage as frighteningly realistic 3-D animations to perform Feel Good Inc. De La Soul joined the animations in a set that left the audience open-mouthed.

Akon was the next live act on, with System of a Down picking up the Best Alternative award after his performance. Craig David then stepped up to present the Best R&B gong, but was left disappointed when winner Alicia Keys delivered her thank-you speech via a video message.

Chemical Brothers nabbed the Best Video gong from under the noses of Gorillaz and Beck, among others. Super-smooth John Legend was on hand next to hand over Best Female to a surprised Shakira.

A serious incident involving Borat stealing Chris Martin’s trousers, then trying to sell them back to the Coldplay frontman then ensued. For the sake of common decency the less said about this the better.

Robbie Williams then took to the stage to blast out his new single Tripping, and a brave stage dive saw his adoring fans practically rip the clothes off his back.

The Free Your Mind award was then presented to Sir Bob Geldof by Madonna. She made an impassioned speech before handing over to Sir Bob – who went on to call for an end to world poverty.

Borat’s highlight of the night was next as the President of Kazakhstan appeared on stage. One unfortunate member of the audience who refused to remain silent (out of respect, naturally) was dragged up and spanked by the host.

After a performance of My Humps by The Black Eyed Peas the irrepressible Robbie Williams took home Best Male, presented to him by Tatu. Fellow Brit James Blunt then picked up the gong for Best New Act.

Borat continued to wreak havoc during Foo Fighters’ set, crawling across stage behind the band. Dave Grohl interrupted DOA to ask him what he was doing and Borat explained he was lost. Ever the professionals, the Foos carried on and finished the track.

Coldplay were finally recognised for their massive track Speed of Sound, picking up Best Single. Shakira then sizzled onstage, exciting frenzied reactions from her male fans. Shortly after Chris Martin and the boys were honoured for a second time, winning Best UK & Ireland Act.

But of course the biggest, the baddest, the phattest category on the night was Best Group. In the running were Coldplay, Green Day, The Black Eyed Peas and U2. But in the end there could be only one winner and it was… Gorillaz. Accepting the award alongside De La Soul, co-creator Jamie Hewlett said: “They're the best group, and they don’t even exist!”

Coldplay and Gorillaz are hours away from hearing if one of them has won the most prizes at the MTV Europe Awards.

The two bands lead the nods with five apiece - three in the same category - including best group and best song. Live acts in Portugal will include Robbie Williams, Green Day, and Madonna who will give the first live TV performance of her new single Hung Up. Coldplay will also perform.

The Lisbon ceremony is hosted by Ali G creator Sacha Baron Cohen, playing his alter ego Kazakhstani Borat Sagdiyev. Presenters at the awards will include Sugababes, actress Brittany Murphy and Portuguese football star Luis Figo.

As well as best group, Coldplay are in the running for the for best rock act, best song for Speed Of Sound, best album for X&Y, and best UK and Ireland act.

They will go head-to-head with U2 in the three categories they are nominated in - best group, best rock act, and best album for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

Gorillaz add best song and best video - both for Feel Good Inc - best pop act, and best UK and Ireland act to their nod for best group.

The cartoon band, created by Blur's Damon Albarn, will use hologram-style technology to beam three-dimensional performing cartoon characters on stage.

Hip-hop artist 50 Cent has nominations for best male, best hip-hop act and best album for The Massacre.

US rockers Green Day earn nominations in the best group, best rock and best album for their chart-topping latest album American Idiot.

For the first time, the awards will include a category for best African act, with 2 Face, Kaysha, Kleptomaniax, 02 and Zamajobe in the running.

Based around today’s fascination with celebrity, the online creative takes the form of a site created by an obsessed fan in homage to Pat.

All of the nominees in each of the MTV Europe Music Awards 29 categories are voted for by MTV’s audiences online, apart from Best Video and the Free Your Mind Award, which are chosen by MTV.

Viewer can also vote via the MTV Europe Music Awards WAP site for ‘best song’.

Voting went live on 27 September 2005, and will close on November 3 2005. In 2004, the MTV Europe Music Awards generated more than 12mn votes.

Coldplay won Best International Group at the Nordic Awards yesterday (29th Oct).

They attended and performed at the ceremony held at The Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Coldplay's next video is to be shot by famed director Anton Corbijn, the group have confirmed.

Anton Corbijn will film the promo clip for the forthcoming "Talk" single, which is to be the third track to be lifted from their globe-straddling album "X&Y".

Corbijn is one of the world's most famous video producers and photographers, having shot acclaimed promos for the likes of Joy Division, U2, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and The Killers.

Corbijn has confirmed the band asked him to shoot the clip for "Talk", having previously rejected a number of previous offers from Chris Martin and co.

He commented: "I have turned down a few previous requests from Coldplay to do a script for their songs, but I liked this song and had an idea straightaway, so that was enough for me to go on. It is always the idea and the song that counts, not the size of the band. I just as happily work with Joseph Arthur, for instance, as with a big band. The only redeeming factor in that sense is that I know the video from the big band will get MTV airplay."

Talking about the new video, Corbijn said: "Well, it is black and white, and slightly strange, as is often the way in my videos, I guess. It will have a certain B-movie feel to it, but I cannot say more than this for now. I always come up with the ideas - except for Nirvana's video - but usually there is some input from the artist. Generally, people come to me for the whole trip, if you like. Whether that is good or bad, I cannot say, but that is what happens."

Gwyneth Paltrow credits husband Chris Martin with saving her from a joyless life following the death of her beloved father. The actress admits she was devastated when dad Bruce died in 2002 - and says she didn't get her "spark" back until she met the Coldplay star.

She is quoted in Britain's Grazia magazine: "My father was the most important relationship in my life until he passed away. "Before I met Chris, I had lost my spark, I had lost my sense of humour. I couldn't find the joy in things. Now I like my life. I'm in a good place."

The screen beauty, who earlier this week hinted she was expecting a second child with her husband, claims she's never been happier since having her baby, Apple. She said: "The most euphoria I've ever experienced was having a baby."

Oxfam campaigner Chris Rose is coordinating The Make Trade Fair presence at all Coldplay's European tour concerts during Autumn 2005 and is writing regular updates of what he gets up to on this blog, part of the Generation Why website from Oxfam.

Gwyneth Paltrow [pictured with Chris Martin] has denied reports that she criticised Britain and that she had plans to return to the US.

According to hollywood.com, Paltrow insists she loves living in London. She had moved there when she began dating Chris Martin in 2002.

Last week Paltrow had reportedly said in an interview: "My husband thinks I'm way too obsessed with cleanliness and germs. I'm just like, 'The street is filthy, could we take off our shoes before we come into the house?' He used to imitate me and say, 'Ewwww, oh my god!' Also, the customer service is just rubbish in England. They'll tell you it'll take two weeks for your Internet service to be fixed! It drives me nuts. And I miss being able to get anything at anytime of day. You can't do that there. It always does rain."

Reports that she had slammed London created a media storm and Paltrow had to come out and deny them. She says, "I don't know where they get off, making up these mean things. But they do."

AUCKLAND - Coldplay may be forced to cancel their only New Zealand concert because Auckland's waterfront arena won't be finished in time.

Coldplay has a concert scheduled at Vector Arena in June but construction delays make it unlikely the 12,000-seat venue will be ready in time, the New Zealand Herald reported on Tuesday. Concert promoter Manolo Echave said he has been told the $80 million dollar project -- due to be finished by the end of this year -- won't be ready until July or August.

Without a proper venue, it's unlikely Coldplay will play in New Zealand this time around, he said.

In a shock revelation, Chris Martin [pictured] has declared that Coldplay's lyrics need improving – and they know how to do it.

Chris claimed in a recent interview that he couldn't pick a favourite Coldplay lyric, because he didn't think they were very good. Speaking to ginger minger, Chris Evans, on BBC Radio 2, Martin asserted: "One thing. They're about to get brilliant. I don’t want to go on about what we're going to do but we're about to get a lot better and part of that lyrically."

Chris also revealed that the band were working on new material, and the process was causing him some stress: "I can't sleep at the moment, cos we're working on new stuff," he said.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s publicist refused to confirm reports that the actress was pregnant with her second child.

Paltrow’s mother, actress Blythe Danner, reportedly let slip that she was going to be a grandmother again at a media awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Her publicist said last night: “We have no comment to make. If and when she is pregnant and they want to come out with an announcement, they will do so.”

Paltrow, 33 and her huband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 28, already have a 16-month daughter, Apple.The pair met in London in 2002 and tied the knot in California in December 2003. There has been various speculation in recent weeks that the pair were expecting their second child.

When Miss Danner, 62, was asked whether she was going to be a grandmother again, she immediately replied: “Yes, I am,” according to the Daily Mail. The paper said she then added: “Well, I think so. I have not checked lately.”

US magazine Star has reported that the family’s latest addition is expected in the spring and that it was probably conceived backstage during one of Coldplay’s summer festival gigs in the UK. It quoted a friend as saying that if the baby was a boy, Paltrow wanted to name him after her father, film director Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002.

James Blunt's Back To Bedlam has overtaken Coldplay's X&Y to become the UK's biggest-selling album of the year so far.

Blunt [pictured] has sold 1,526,000 copies - 2,000 more than Coldplay - and is currently at number two in the album chart. The debut album has topped the chart across Europe and produced the hit single You're Beautiful.

It is an extraordinary success story for Blunt, 28, an Old Harrovian and former member of the Household Cavalry. He was recently voted Best New Act at the Q Awards.Next month he will promote the album in the US with a series of live dates. His attempt to crack America comes as US critics tire of Coldplay.

X&Y received dismal reviews, with the New York Times calling them "the most insufferable band of the decade" and describing Chris Martin's voice as "a sound somewhere between a yodel and a hiccup".

Martin admitted the reviews were "devastating".

The four major labels, Concord Music Group and the Recording Industry Association of America are teaming for a double-disc compilation to benefit victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. "Hurricane Relief: Come Together Now" is expected in mid-November and boasts contributions from Coldplay, Fats Domino, Barbra Streisand, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John and James Brown, among many others.

Proceeds have been earmarked for the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund.

The album also features live versions of Coldplay's "Fix You," John's "I'm Still Standing," Brown's "Try Me" and John Fogerty's "Born on the Bayou," the unreleased Streisand song "I Believe" and a Dave Matthews Band/Robert Randolph collaboration, "Louisiana Bayou."

Among the notable tunes featured on the disc is the new "Heart of America," penned by Tim Blixseth and featuring Wynonna, Michael McDonald and Eric Benet. The artists will perform the song next week before the third game of the Major League Baseball World Series.Another new tune, "Come Together Now," was penned by actress Sharon Stone with songwriters Denise Rich, Damon Sharpe and Mark Feist. It features nearly 30 artists, such as the Game, Aaron and Nick Carter, Celine Dion, Mya, Joss Stone, Ruben Studdard and Wyclef Jean.

Also featured on the set is an all-star cover of Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven," originally organized by Sharon Osbourne in the wake of the Asian tsunami last year. The song features music by Velvet Revolver and vocal contributions from John, Mary J. Blige, Rod Stewart, Gwen Stefani, Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne, Aerosmith' Steven Tyler and Phil Collins, among others.

"Tears in Heaven" will be available beginning today (Oct. 18) exclusively from the iTunes Music Store, with proceeds to benefit Save the Children. Money from international purchases will be given to tsunami relief organizations.

Fuse will welcome some star power to in-depth interview series 100%, the network said Tueday.

Kanye West, The White Stripes and Coldplay will be featured on episodes of 100% this fall. Past 100% subjects have included U2, Green Day, Usher, Black Eyed Peas, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Audioslave, Beastie Boys and Blink 182.

"100% is like hanging out with your favorite musician," Fuse head of entertainment Robert Weiss said in a prepared statement. "It's very exciting to continue to have the most popular musicians come to us. 100% is dedicated to showcasing a side of musicians that the public rarely sees, with candid interviews about their lives and musical inspirations and of their quintessential videos."

Coldplay's Chris Martin [pictured] beat off competition from U2 frontman Bono to walk away with a lunchbox designed by REM vocalist Michael Stipe.

The two stars became embroiled in a bidding war at a charity auction in aid of the Food Bank for New York city at the Wooster Projects Gallery on Sunday night, but Martin walked away triumphant with a winning bid of US$20,000.

Bono later joked: "It was death by Coldplay."

But it wasn't all bad news for the Irish supergroup. Bono's bandmate The Edge won a lunchbox designed by former US President Bill Clinton with a winning bid of US$11,000.

The auction sold over 100 lunchboxes designed by various celebrities including Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie.
