Coldplay have enough documentary footage to make their own 'Let It Be' style movie of the making of 'X&Y, nme.com can reveal.

The band have documented the entire recording process of making of their album, but singer Chris Martin joked that there would only be enough for a "five-minute DVD".

He said: "We've been documenting stuff from the beginning, but we just don't release it at all. There's a vault in London with 500 hours of us in the studio. One day we'll be able to whittle it down to a five-minute DVD. We could make our own 'Let It Be'.

"In fact, it was really depressing. I was watching an episode of The Beatles' 'Anthology' where George says to Paul 'I'll play whatever you want to play, or I won't play anything at all if it'll make you happy'. And I remember that right at the beginning of the album Guy said exactly the same thing to me. I remember thinking 'This album's going wrong!'. This was before we started again."

More details on this story here

Coldplay Day On Radio 1

If you're a Coldplay fan, you are probably aware that there are 233 hours (give or take a few) until X&Y, the band's third album, hits stores on June 6th. You might even be counting those hours — because Coldplay most certainly are.

"We're in that period where it's like we're waiting for exam results — we've worked as hard as we could and now we have to wait for this period until things get marked," frontman Chris Martin explained. "And so it's probably the healthiest thing for us to go around and try to convince people that it's good."

"Even when you get exam results, there's a sense of relief, even if you get a bad mark," bassist Guy Berryman added. "I mean, it's been so long in the making, and it's been such an emotional ride, with many, many hours spent in the studio. So it's nice that it's finally coming out."And Berryman's not kidding about the "many, many hours" that went into the album. In fact, the final version of X&Y is actually the third version of the record the band made ... and it's absolutely nothing like the record they started making last year (see "Coldplay Album Preview: X&Y A Complex Stadium-Rocker").

"We set out to push ourselves forward in every direction — and we ended up with an album that sounded like we'd gone backwards rather than forwards," Berryman said. "So we had to step it up a few notches and work hard at it to get it right."

The record was initially scheduled to hit shelves last year, but when Coldplay weren't happy with the progress they had made, the tunes were scrapped, and that date was pushed to January of this year. But as 2005 approached, the bandmembers were hoping for — they called it a "flat," "passionless" recording — and the tunes were once again ditched. As January came and went, the band knew it had to knuckle down and finish off X&Y — but as expectations for the record grew larger, completing it became tougher and tougher.

"We were thinking too much about the fact that it was going to get such a big release, and that we're going to have to tour it and do all these interviews," Martin said. "And we were getting a bit intimidated by that."

But the light bulb finally went off with a song titled, fittingly enough, "Square One."

"The song 'Square One' is exactly that. It's a call to arms for the four of us. A plea to each of us not to be intimidated by anything or anyone else," he said. "When we finished that song, it felt very much like we could do our own record, and we didn't have to think of anyone else's demands."

Inspired by the tune, they buckled down and ran through the rest of X&Y in about a month. And now, as the hours tick down ... is there anything the band would change about the record?

Actually, just about everything.

"We kept [adding] finishing [touches to] the record until it was way too late. That's why we don't listen to it at the moment, because we'd just find something to go back and change," Martin said. "That's the case with everything we do. We're just last-minute sort of people."

Source: MTV.com

Coldplay @ Myspace

Since their formation in Los Angeles in 1998, the fiercely original quartet Rilo Kiley has become an unqualified favorite of savvy music fans and critics across the country and around the world.

Fronted by a pair of gifted songwriters in Blake Sennet and the charismatic Jenny Lewis, dubbed by Entertainment Weekly as "the heiress apparent to Patsy, Petula, and Chrissie," the band is about to burst into even greater trajectory thanks to "More Adventurous," their brilliant third album and first on their own Brute/Beaute imprint through Warner Bros. Records and an upcoming tour supporting Coldplay. On the heels of "More Adventurous," featuring the band's new single and video "Portions For Foxes," news of Rilo Kiley's resonant and revealing sound spread fast. "The music is immensely rich in emotion, color and musical range," raved The Los Angeles Times, while Rolling Stone observed, "This L.A. quartet packs big-city country music and meticulously breezy arrangements into eleven sweet, heartbroken songs." "The tightest thing to emerge from the indie rock Petri Dish in years," was how Time Magazine put it, while the Boston Globe singled out the band's "deft alchemy...emotional revelation, narrative craft, and musical muscle." "More Adventurous" ended up on 2004 Best Of lists for Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, The Los Angeles Times, Harp, Paste, Tracks, The Village Voice and a host of others. But it was The Minneapolis City Pages which perhaps put it best: "They don't make 'em like 'More Adventurous' anymore."

Now concertgoers across the country will have a chance to see one of the best live bands on the road today when Rilo Kiley embarks on a major venue tour opening for Coldplay later this summer. Dates are listed below.

Comprised of Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Blake Sennet (guitar, vocals), Pierre de Reeder (bass) and Jason Boesel (drums), Rilo Kiley released two independent albums, including 2002's acclaimed "The Execution Of All Things," before putting together their own Brute/Beaute Records through Warner Bros. last year.

"More Adventurous" was recorded with an array of young, innovative producers, including Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint), Jimmy Tamborello (Postal Service), and Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Rocket From The Crypt). The result, according to Interview Magazine, "…swings through a spectrum of moods, from the confusion bred by beleaguered hearts to a cheeky send-up of selling out, all buoyed by Lewis's tender voice and Sennett's soaring guitar work."
Chris Martin has spoken to Yahoo! Music about the "fear" he's experienced as a father, on the eve of the release of the new Coldplay album "X&Y".

In an exclusive interview, Martin spoke about his daughter Apple and the impact she has had on the music of the band and his relationship with wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

As the band release their comeback single "Speed Of Sound", Martin also revealed the other pressures and inspirations that fuelled the band's follow-up to the globe-conquering "A Rush Of Blood To The Head".

Speaking about fatherhood, Martin explained the affect on "X&Y". "I think being a dad definitely, well, anything that affects your life affects your lyrics. And being a dad definitely affects your life and makes you see everything, I think, in more extreme colour. I worship my daughter. So that's a great source of happiness," he explained. "But, also, you have all this fear about it and all that stuff. And, I mean, everything that happens to us influences our lyrics."

On the subject of the recording of the album, Chris said the band decided to go return to their roots. He said: "We really went back to basics. I think some of the stuff that comes along with being a big band isn't necessarily that healthy for creativity or for your relationship.

"When you start travelling separately, you start being sort of naturally divided. So it took us a while to think well, really we kind of miss each other, and we, and we don't really need all this paraphernalia. We booked out a tiny studio in North London and just went back in there with the most bare of instruments, and rocked. Not rocked, soft rock, we soft rocked."

Elsewhere in the interview, guitarist Jonny Buckland explained the musical influences that had impacted on "X&Y". "We listened to a lot of electronic records while we were making it and before making the album. We got heavily into Kraftwork and Depeche Mode and Yoda."

Martin also gave his verdict on the album, showing his usual mixture of uncertainty and bashfulness. "I think we're far too close to it to know if it's our best work yet. Every parent, when they take their kid to school, secretly thinks that their kid is the best. Ours might be the one that actually is the troublemaker and not very good at all…"

Source: Dotmusic

Coldplay Back on Top of Filter Weekly Radio Chart

Music giant EMI's profits have fallen after its major artists Coldplay and Gorillaz delayed the release of their new albums.

Both missed out on bonuses from the British label to make deadlines imposed on their new LPs, so they could perfect their work.

But the delay has had an adverse effect on the world's third largest music company - which today announced its full-year pre-tax profit fell from $300 million (GBP162.3 million) last year (04) to $259.5 million (GBP141.9 million).

Shares are subsequently down 2.1 per cent to 236 pence (448.4 cents) at the London Stock Exchange.Coldplay's Chris Martin caused controversy earlier this month when he blasted EMI's concern about the delay.

He said, "I don't really care about EMI. In the week prior to the album's launch on 6 June, content including band photos, screensavers and selected tracks from the album will be available for download to mobile phones.

The Bluecasting technology has not been used before for large-format outdoor advertising.
Though battered by the failure of rock stars to deliver albums on time, music giant EMI will this week reassure investors that better days lie ahead.

Delays to new releases from Coldplay and the Gorillaz were behind a profits warning issued by EMI earlier this year and the music giant has guided the City to a haul of around £138m for the year to March 31 against £163.4m last time.

Both albums will be on store shelves by June 6 so investors will hope for a less turbulent time ahead, although it remains to be seen whether the company can recover any of the market share it has lost to rival Universal.Other issues that are likely to dominate its results statement tomorrow include action against music piracy and the popularity of legal downloads.

Catalogue retailing group GUS will provide the latest snapshot of activity on the UK high street when it posts on Wednesday.

Investors will be looking for news on recent sales at its Argos chain after GUS said in April that shoppers had cut back on buying furniture and other big-ticket items. However, this contrasted with a good performance from credit checking arm Experian. Stockbroker Charles Stanley is expecting pre-tax profits to come in at £948.5m against £826.6m previously.

Analyst Simon Proctor said attention would inevitably turn to the issue of corporate structure since some sort of break up of the business was likely.

He added, "We believe GUS's management are determined not to rush the process, and we do not expect any significant announcement on this issue."

Mobile phone giant Vodafone is set to provide more uplifting news for the telecoms sector tomorrow, just a week after rival O said it had more than tripled profits.

Analysts are expecting Vodafone to ring in a robust set of final results with strong momentum across all its key divisions.

Fund manager Barclays said Spain, Italy and Germany should continue to be the main growth drivers. It will be looking for reassurance that the new management is starting to improve the pace of performance.

The market is likely to focus on the level of the new shareholder buyback programme. Pre-tax profits are expected to reach £10.2bn against £10bn last time.

Investors will be expecting few surprises from struggling retailer Marks & Spencer when it reports annual results tomorrow.

M&S has issued detailed guidance predicting pre-tax profits of between £610m and £625m, towards the top end of analysts' original forecasts.

The key focus is likely to be on sales and gross margin trends in April and May, particularly after weaker numbers reported by competitors such as Next.

The market will be looking for evidence that the group's food sales have stabilised in recent months.

Analysts at Barclays are forecasting profits of £621m against £751m the year before.

Budget airline easyJet will unveil its first-half figures tomorrow which analysts at Barclays expect to show pre-tax losses of £25m, widening from a deficit of £16m, last time.

The six months to March 31 is a seasonally weak trading period for the carrier although it will have been helped by the timing of Easter this year.

Telecoms group Cable & Wireless could surprise the market with its dividend payout when it posts final profits on Thursday. The group, expected to turn in pre-tax profits of £377.3m against £359.2m a year ago, could beat dividend expectations given its £1.15bn of free cash and lower-than-expected long term spending plans. Analysts say C&W has the ability to pay out more than the expected 3.1p in the full year and are tipping 3.4p.

Source: icwales

Coldplay Featured In New iTunes TV Commercial

It is not clear whether the commercial was created from original footage or if it was taken from Coldplay’s music video for the song, which has yet to debut on the band’s website, MTV, or on iTunes. The commercial ends with “Coldplay’s new album.
Coldplay want Beyonce Knowles to star in the video for their next single Fix You, because their fans deserve more "gorgeous girls".

The band aren't confident people like their promo for Speed Of Sound, the first single from their new album X+y - but they think they are naturally disadvantaged because there are no women in the group.

Frontman Chris Martin says, "I think the only way for us to get a video that does really well is for us to get Beyonce in it. I'm not sure how we're going to do that, though. We're at such a disadvantage because we don't have gorgeous girls in our band.

"So it's much harder for us to make videos.
