It's a wrap - new photos emerge of Princess Of China video shoot following its completion

More photos have emerged over the past 48 hours from the Princess of China music video set, which was recorded in Los Angeles over two days this week, which Coldplay have been shooting with Rihanna. Not only that, some websites are saying that the single will be released in June so the video may be released sometime around then.

The photos, of extras involved in the video along with Chris Martin were discovered via the Facebook page of actor/stuntman Marcus Natvidad and also, more recently, an article as featured in this weekend's The Sun, which has the following pictures of Rihanna and Chris dressed in what they call 'Star-Wars inspired costume'.

These are in addition to the photo of Chris Martin that was tweeted by Phil Harvey on the official Coldplay Twitter account yesterday when he said: "It's a wrap on #princessofchina PH". Read on for a round-up of the photos, and also some of your comments of your thoughts of the video shoot...

The Sun's article continued: Chris Martin would make a decent Luke Skywalker. The Coldplay frontman larked about in his Star Wars-style costume on the set of his and Rihanna's video for new single Princess Of China. Rihanna, dressed as a geisha, looked a bit like Princess Leia. She should keep the outfit for Kablah-blah lessons with her new bloke Ashton Kutcher. Rihanna and Chris – who have become good pals since teaming up for the song – spent two days filming the promo in LA. There was no sign of Chris's bandmates. They were fiddling with their lightsabers in the Millennium Falcon.

I have a general gripe against green-screen videos, they look too artificial. if they were to go on location (China!) that would be cool, but time and money are probably an issue. that's why the video for paradise was so cool, it was all on location. but still, video looks interesting, has some potential. As a Chinese, i must say, yeah, i'm very frustrated. The people in the pics are no Chinese elements. Thanks to the people who understand the difference between Jap and Chn. I know it's a shame for our country that can't bring the band in, the MV shooting or the shows. But it's not we fans here can do. The gov does so. If one feature concerns only one of the songs of a concept album, I think it can still be considered as a tight and cohesive concept album. I think 'oppressive Orwellian world' would be a feature of Major Minus and not Princess of China. But that's just my interpretation. Who knows what the 'warriors' ior whatever in the photos are up to? It's just some pictures taken outside of the set (though yes they look quite scary). I think whatever the form/external appearance (elephant costume, giraffe costume or whatever costume) is, the Paradise video fits the concept behind the song (basically, the sense of feeling hopeless and misplaced and sudenly finding your paradise, your own source of solace - that's what happens to the elephant; it could be a bloody giraffe, the core idea would still be the same). The question is, as far I as understand the matter, is how these people in the pictures fit in in a song called 'Princess of China' and in the overall idea of the album. [thanks suzanafg]

I really want to see this now that I've seen the ninjas. I can't even imagine what it will be like. Very curious indeed! I liked what they did with Paradise. Remember we all thought that model was gonna be in it, but it turned out to be really great and funny? From the look of these pictures I think this could be the same! I don't know why everyone is so worried that this is more Japanese than Chinese. The song has nothing to do with china, other then the title. People, so much negativity over something that is basically someone's artistic idea...? This is a VIDEO for gosh sakes, let's enjoy whatever the guys have decided.....You will either like it or you won't, but I guarantee the world will keep spinning. If I had been told weeks in advance that Coldplay in elephant suits was to turn into one of their instant classics, I probably would've scratched my head and said Hmmmmm......when in reality, Chris' rather spur-of-the-moment vision is one of their best ever (IMO of course)..... I for one can't wait to see POC results and be damned with the political correctness, racist remarks, rather boring critiques based on a few photos and literally something that doesn't even exist quite yet. It's ART folks, and this is COLDPLAY......nothing more needs saying. Relax and learn to enjoy the simple things with a touch of humor and the sheer joy that being a COLDPLAYER brings to our lives. And btw the lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with China, neither does the music, or very minimally. So depicting Chinese culture accurately is not that vital, although it is disrespectful to mix China and Japan. The worse thing would be if all the ninjas would start dancing and stuff LOLOLOL even though it's a "sad" song. Chris already acts like Eminem when he sings it live. But so far I have absolutely no idea how they will pull it off. Like, is it going to have a storyline? How are Chris and Rihanna going to interact? And it can't have a happy ending. So the mission of the ninjas and their leader Chris Skywalker to save the Princess who he dumped has to be unsuccessful. So very confusing. And that director's previous work doesn't look promising. I wonder if Chris has in some way been confused about Japan and China - I mean Lovers in Japan with all the butterflies (butterflies and China make sense) and Princess of China (with all this strong Japanese influence even though the song title says China). I wonder if Rihanna's character and the other geishas are in trouble / threatened or captured by these Ninjas etc. and Chris (and the other samurais) then fight them and win. This is the first time I saw the pictures, I thought people were joking about this. All I can say is: What the fuck. It looks like they are just throwing everything stereotypically "Asian" into a video. What does the concept of the story actually have to do with Asia? The only "Asian" thing about the song is the riff. The story and Mylo Xyloto as a whole have nothing to do with this. I didn't like the Charlie Brown video, but at least it made sense with the themes of the record. Japan is not the same thing as China. This is like saying the USA and Germany are exactly the same country because they both contain mostly white people. It's nonsense. China and Japan are actually very different nations that have thousands of years of separate, unique history and have shed a lot of blood fighting each other. I think Chinese people would be incredibly frustrated with this. It would be like someone making a video about France and containing nothing but German icons. But anyway, I will not rant any further. Jeez, what are you worrying about? So what Ninja's and Samurai's are Japanese and not Chinese? It's almost the same as saying that Paradise or The Scientist aren't correct. An elephant can't ride a bike!! and people can't walk and sing in reverse!! I'm actually getting sort of excited how this video's gonna look like, it could either be a total flop or a really great one. Coldplay filming Princess Of China video with Rihanna in Los Angeles - latest news

Coldplay have begun filming the new video for Princess Of China in Los Angeles on Thursday 22nd March, various sources are confirming on Twitter in the last few hours. The video will feature Rihanna, and she posted some behind-the-scenes images from the music video shoot.

In one of the pictures, Rihanna is dressed up in a gothic-style outfit while 'flipping the bird' at the camera with a long gold nail. The other close-up photo shows Rihanna blowing smoke out of her mouth, while showing off her geisha make-up. She tweeted the images with the words: "Gangsta goth geisha #thuglife #princessofchina."

Meanwhile a picture of Chris Martin also emerged from the video shoot of him wearing a leather jacket [pictured]. Once the tweets were released from Rihanna, immediately #princessofchina began to trend worldwide across Twitter. Not surprising, given she has over 15.3m followers.

Coldplay news round-up: US record sales share, NME Charlie Brown 'review', Flaming Lips/Chris Martin collaboration

Coldplay, Adele and folk band Mumford And Sons are leading the British invasion of the American album charts - Brit artists have netted the highest share of US record sales in more than a decade.

Combined, they accounted for nearly 12 per cent of all albums sold in America last year (11), a jump of more than one percent from 2010, according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The rising popularity of U.K. artists has been attributed to the remarkable success of Adele, who sold nearly seven million copies in the U.S. in 2011. Adele's debut 19 sold nearly one million copies, while her sophomore effort, 21, sold 5.8 million. Mumford and Sons' hit album Sigh No More sold 1.5 million records, while a further 27 UK albums sold more than 100,000 copies in America, including Susan Boyle's Someone to Watch Over Me and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto [pictured].

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor says, "These results prove that the risks UK labels take investing in British talent help British artists break internationally and generate important exports that boost the UK economy".

NME have reviewed Coldplay's latest single (can we call it that yet?) Charlie Brown online this week. Sadly though, they hate it. Or at least the person, most likely someone on voluntary work experience or a resident NME blogger, hates it. You posted your thoughts on the review in the Charlie Brown sub-forum over the last few days. Here's what NME had to say about the song:

You can’t call a song ‘Charlie Brown’ and make it worse than the Peanuts theme. I don’t care if you’re Chris Martin. I don’t care if you’re a member of your very own Coldplay gym, or if you recorded it in a church, or if your wife’s doing a recipe book especially for vegans who teach Bikram yoga to monks. If you call a song ‘Charlie Brown’ and it sounds this half-arsed you are officially Out Of The Club.

Meanwhile, Chris Martin will feature on a collaborative album alongside American band The Flaming Lips for Record Store Day this year, that is according to various sources this week, including Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. The song 'I Don't Want You To Die' will form part of a compilation called 'The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends'. Documenting a 'series of unique and experimental sessions' according to a press release, the album will also include collaborations with Bon Iver, Yoko Ono and Ke$ha. Bogus Coldplay ticket site shut down by UK Trading Standards

A gang of online fraudsters have been using a Wandsworth Council-owned building as a bogus mailing address to dupe hundreds of Coldplay fans into buying non-existent concert tickets, Wandsworth Guardian. The gang set up a string of websites promising tickets for acts such as Coldplay, JLS, Barry Manilow, Westlife, Il Divo and comedian Michael McIntyre at some of London’s best venues including the O2 Arena.

The websites that trading standards shut down were: coldplay-tour-2012.com, barry-manilow-2012-support.com , il-divo-live.com, jls-tickets.com, live.net, michael-mcintyre.com and westlife-concert-tickets-support.com. They were rumbled after a woman from Aberdeen contacted bosses at the O2 because her JLS tickets had not arrived. Staff at the venue then traced the gang’s "registered" address to a council day centre and tipped off Wandsworth Council's trading standards team. The team contacted Google to de-list the websites from the company’s search engines and asked banks to stop them being able to process cash payments.

Chief trading standards officer Christopher Roe said: "As soon as we got wind of what was happening we were able to step in and put a stop to this unpleasant scam. Unfortunately a lot of people have paid money for tickets that are never going to arrive, but at least we have managed to stop the criminals pocketing all the cash and ensured that £40,000 is available to help pay back the victims."

Almost £40,000 was frozen in the bogus company's account before it could be pocketed by gang members - this will now be reimbursed to customers who have lost out. The fraudsters have now been put out of business, but not before they swindled around 1,900 people from all across the country.

It is understood the gang hail from the Indian subcontinent but they have yet to be traced. Jonathan Brown, secretary of the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (STAR) said: "Ticket crime cynically preys on the enthusiasm of fans to see their favourite entertainers, but can be avoided by taking care when buying tickets. Meanwhile on the subject of tickets and live shows, one of Coldplay's official ticket outlets, Ticketline, at the time the UK tickets went on sale in November 2011, are indicating that Coldplay's 3rd show at the Emirates Stadium in London on 4th June has been cancelled. No confirmation from Coldplay.com yet and We have no idea whether this is a mistake or if some kind of announcement is due to confirm this, but here are some screenshots of the website at the time (it is still the same as of 8am Monday morning, GMT).

UPDATE: Coldplay won their first round matchup against Arctic Monkeys, but are set to lose out in the second round to Coheed & Cambria by quite some distance. Why so much? Coldplay have been drawn against the Arctic Monkeys in the first round of MTV's Musical March Madness tournament, which sees artists battle it out against each other for online votes. [thanks Coeurli & _Tash]

Although the Arctic Monkeys took an early lead in the contest, Coldplay are now ahead by the slimmest of margins. (EDIT: Coldplay are 0.27% behind - vote now!) Here's what MTV have to say: #2 Coldplay vs. #15 Arctic Monkeys: Given Coldplay's run of MMM disappointments (they've made it out of the first round once), perhaps this one shouldn't surprise us, but, dang. Thanks to the surprisingly fervent support of their fans, it's the Arctic Monkeys who hold the lead, though their grasp on victory seems to be slipping by the hour, as Coldplay rallies to close the gap. Who advances? We think this one is headed for upset city, and we're taking the Monkeys to move on.

Chris Martin was shocked to discover President Barack Obama has the band's songs on his iPod, according to Capital FM this week. Chris told the Daily Express that he couldn't believe the American leader would be listening to his music. He confessed: "I met Barack Obama and he said: 'I have your songs on my iPod'. But I thought 'I bet he says that to every pop star he meets'. I can't get my head around the notion that the President would have any of my songs on his playlist. It's just too surreal."

StubHub, eBay's secondary ticket selling site, has launched in the UK. The online ticketing marketplace, which connects buyers and sellers, is set to compete with rivals such as Viagogo and Seatwave, who offer the same service, the Metro are reporting. The UK site is currently offering more than 140,000 tickets to events featuring artists such as Madonna, Coldplay and Florence and the Machine.

Viagogo was the subject of a recent Dispatches programme for Channel 4, which claimed the ticketing site competes with fans for tickets to high profile shows to inflate prices, but StubHub has distanced itself from any unfair practices. "We have a very different proposition which does not include buying and selling tickets on our own behalf, nor benefitting from direct allocations from promoters and venues," Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, GM International of StubHub, told The Huffington Post UK.

Labour MP Sharon Hodgson, a campaigner for the regulation of the ticket selling industry, has questioned the methods and motives StubHub will be employing and called for a government investigation into sites of its kind. "Stubhub say they won’t be buying and selling tickets themselves – but Viagogo were saying exactly the same thing until they were exposed. The government needs to look seriously about how we can rebalance the scales in favour of the event-going public instead of the small number of people who are creaming off big profits."

The UK arm of StubHub was launched last night with a party at Paramount at Centre Point in central London, which was attended by celebrities such as Alexandra Burke, Simon Webbe and Tim Westwood. StubHub was launched in San Francisco in 2000, and was acquired by eBay in 2007 in a deal worth $310million (£197million).

Vivendi’s Universal Music is to face a lengthy in-depth investigation into its $1.9bn bid for EMI’s record labels, as Brussels explores concerns that the tie-up could unfavourably tilt the balance of power in the digital music business. Following a preliminary examination, the European Commission this week privately expressed its serious doubts over the impact on competition from the purchase of EMI, the home of The Beatles and Coldplay.

Universal Music, the biggest recorded music group by revenues, with artists such as Lady Gaga, technically has until today to submit concessions to eliminate these concerns and win an early green light. But so far, no “remedies” have been proposed. Those involved in the process say a full investigation, lasting roughly three months, into a transaction that would shrink the market to three big recording groups is all but certain. Universal and the Commission declined to comment on the case. Regulators will announce a decision on March 23.

Charlie Brown single has been reviewed by Digital Spy this week, and according to them the single will have a release date of 19th March. Here's their 5/5 star review:

Coldplay's Chris Martin may have a regrettable sense of humour when it comes to early morning chatshows and joking about the title of their latest album Mylo Xyloto, but thankfully and rightfully that's where the criticism stops. It may be a fact that people from different parts of the world might struggle with the record's pronunciation, but should they really care when it contains gems like new single 'Charlie Brown'?

"I stole a key and took a car downtown where the lost boys meet/ I took a car downtown and took what they offered me to set me free," Martin confesses over a foot-stomping beat and tapping guitar strums, before the chorus charges head-first into a blissful folk-pop hook of anthemic proportions. 'Charlie Brown' may be Coldplay's most youthful sounding cut to date, but it's their well-worn ear for a stellar riff that's the main attraction here.

Next, Dutch dance producer Tiesto is set to unveil new remixes of Coldplay and Gotye tracks on his forthcoming new collection, according to Gigwise. He has reworked No.1 singles 'Paradise' and 'Somebody That I Used To Know' alongside 'Young Blood' by The Naked And Famous for his new collection, Club Life - Volume Two Miami. A release date for the album has not been announced. "I picked Miami because it’s one of my favorite cities in the world," says Tiësto. "There’s so much to do, the club life there is amazing, it’s a very glamorous city."

Meanwhile, Chris Martin admits he has a habit of saying "a lot of stupid stuff" that comes back to "bite" him, and that he has made many comments that he later wanted to retract such as claiming he plans to retire when he is 40, writes the Belfast Telegraph today, citing an undated radio interview on the Australian radio's The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

The Belfast Telegraph continued: Chris, who celebrated his 35th birthday on March 2, insists he no longer wants to prematurely end his music career. "I think that one thing I've learnt over the years is that I say a lot of stupid stuff that comes back to bite me and that's just another one of those things," he said on Australian radio's The Kyle and Jackie O Show. "I get asked so many questions that it's only human nature that a lot of the answers are just going to be a load of crap."

Chris added that he is unsure of what he would like to do in five years time. He prefers to live in the moment and take each day as it comes. "Who knows, I don't know how I'll feel in five years," he said. "At the moment I feel so grateful and happy to have the job I've been given."

The musician, who has two children with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, is also grateful that Coldplay's latest album Mylo Xyloto has been such a success. However he doesn't believe US President Barack Obama is one of his fans despite hearing it directly from him. "I got to meet him in the summer and he said, 'Oh you're on my iPod', and I thought maybe he says that to all the musicians," he laughed. "I feel like if I was the president I'd say that to a musician."

FInally, Model Christy Turlington Burns is teaming with Starbucks to release Every Mother Counts 2012, the second album to benefit the organization she founded of the same name. Every Mother Counts is an awareness and mobilization campaign to reduce the maternal mortality rate on a global scale. The new collection, available at Starbucks exclusively from May 1st to May 29th to celebrate Mother's Day, features a slew of A-list acts, including David Bowie, Sting, Faith Hill and Lauryn Hill. In addition, there are several previously unreleased tracks, highlighted by Coldplay's acoustic "Yellow," Bono and the Edge's acoustic "Original of the Species," Eddie Vedder's "Skipping" and husband-and-wife team Paul Simon and Edie Brickell teaming on "Pretty Day."

In all, 13 of the 19 songs are previously unheard. In addition to the aforementioned tracks, Alanis Morissette, Patti Smith, Beck, the Dave Matthews Band and more contribute to the collection. "I went to friends first, as I did with the first CD," Turlington Burns tells Rolling Stone. "Bono and Chris Martin were great supporters of the project the first time around, and when I knew I wanted to include men on this album they were obvious choices. They are also both fathers to daughters. Others, such as Patti Smith and Rita Wilson, I've known for a long time, and some, like Edie Brickell and Paul Simon, I only met briefly but was a huge admirer. I generally wanted a diverse group of artists who were parents, or in the case of Edward Sharpe, who will be soon. We wanted to reach a broad audience on this issue with this particular project and with a range of perspectives."

Last month, the 'All Time Low' singers confessed that they would love to work with Jessie as well as Rihanna - which Nathan admitted is one of his favourite artists to follow on social networking site Twitter. Following Coldplay's annoucement that they will be touring Australia from November, The Music (Australia) website are getting excited about the fact that they will be in the same country, touring at the same time, as Radiohead.

The Music article continues as follows: Coldplay’s expected arena tour is set to take place within weeks of Radiohead’s, as two of the UK’s biggest bands visit Australia. Coldplay have already expressed their intentions to tour Australia this year, and a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph indicates that the band will be here in November – with full details to be announced next month. That will coincide with Radiohead’s mid-November tour, which could see two of the UK’s biggest bands in the country at the same time. Neither have indicated that they’ll be performing as part of a festival, but in announcing only five east coast shows Radiohead announcing that. "No shows will be added to the tour."

The Telegraph’s story centred on the fact that punters will be given LED wristbands for the shows, which will be controlled by the band’s lighting engineer. "It’s a little self-indulgent on our part," frontman Chris Martin said, "but we love the way it looks when thousands of people all have lights on them. While Chris Martin put an end to the Mylo Xyloto name-regretting incident this week, an article by The Atlantic entitled, "Coldplay's Lessons for Global Marketing (Yes, Seriously)" has been published online comparing Coldplay as a global brand to other bodies that have 'screwed up a global name'. But it's not all bad: they secretly love Coldplay deep down, as evidenced by their previous entries (linked). Read their article below to find out...

The Atlantic continue: When Coldplay (a band that everybody hates on the Internet except for me) announced that its 2011 album would be titled Mylo Xyloto, the music world had a bunch of questions. Such as: What the heck is a Mylo Xyloto? And, why does Coldplay insist on being so horrible? And, so is this recorded in Turkish, or what? The real answer was much more boring. Apparently, it was a play on Mylo, a name that lead-singer Chris Martin found charming, and Xyloto, a portmanteau fusing the words xylophone and toe. "It's just something that we thought looked really good," Martin explained on ABC last week. "But everywhere we go around the world people pronounce it in the most crazy ways and we're beginning to regret it now."

I wouldn't be writing this for The Atlantic if it were just a Coldplay story (Such. A. Lie.), but it's really, truly also a global marketing story. Coldplay is a global brand. Their songs and records travel around the world, not unlike the name of a Ford car, or an Apple computer. They have to translate for disparate audiences as easily as a C-Am-F-G chord progression. Their last record, Viva La Vida, or Death and All of His Friends, was the global best-selling album of 2008. And talk about a name that travels! Half-Spanish, half-English, and practically gift-wrapped for a global tour. Compare this with Mylo Xyloto, which is neither Spanish, nor English, nor anything really. It looks like esoterically spelled baby-speak. A name that half the world can't pronounce and the other half can't even Google puts Coldplay in the shameful pantheon of global brands that majorly screwed up a global name: Consider Pschitt, a French softdrink; Fartek, a Swedish babywear product; Cat Crap, a lens cleaner in Japan; the Chevy Nova (that's Spanish for "no go" or "doesn't go"). In an interview I conducted last year with Hayes Roth, chief marketing officer at the famous naming firm Landor, he explained that 40 years ago, cross-cultural comparisons of names was a "smart extra step." Now it's mandatory diligence. This is not a band that has demonstrated formidable faculty with words, but next go around, expect some more phonetics in the title. [Article ends]

Reports: Coldplay to tour Australia in November - dates revealed soon (plus Sunrise announcement on Monday 5th)

Coldplay will head to Australia in November to play outdoor arena concerts according to Adelaide Now who report that they have spoken to Chris Martin about the tour and the Xylobands which they will also be using on the tour. The dates will be announced next month according to the article. Read on for their report...

Adelaide Now continue: Fans will be part of the action when Coldplay tour Australia's outdoor arenas in November. If you've seen the Charlie Brown video, you will have spotted the LED wristbands worn by the audience. Frontman Chris Martin told me he couldn't wait to see their Australian fans waving the bands, which have lights controlled by the band. "It's a little self-indulgent on our part but we love the way it looks when thousands of people all have lights on them," he said. "It's such an amazing thing to be a part of."

Martin said it was about time the band had a hit single here with Paradise now certified five times platinum for sales of almost 400,000 downloads. He said he has often joked that he is jealous his wife Gwyneth Paltrow has had a No.1 hit single here - with Cruisin' in 2000 - while the band hadn't cracked it. Paradise was flogged during summer as the soundtrack to promote Seven's ratings hit Revenge. "It's great, anything that can keep us coming back to Australia, that lets us go on tour there is great," he said. The Mylo Xyloto tour details are expected to be announced next month. Good Morning America review: Coldplay 'beginning to regret naming fifth album Mylo Xyloto'

Coldplay are starting to regret naming their fifth album Mylo Xyloto - because their foreign fans can't pronounce the cryptic title, that is according to IFP, Just Jared, GossipCenter and Contact Music today.

Contact Music continues: Coldplay have shied away from defining the meaning of the title ever since its release last October, with frontman Chris Martin insisting the group simply "invented two words that you couldn't even Google". But the world-famous British band is now beginning to see the pitfalls of selecting such a bizarre name and Martin confesses he's wishing the group went with something more mundane.

Talking about the success of the record on Good Morning America on Friday, he said, "It's just something that we thought looked really good but everywhere we go around the world people pronounce it in the most crazy ways and we're beginning to regret it now."

When the album was released last October, Coldplay said it was pronounced "My-Low Zy-letoe". Chris said at the time: "The title doesn't have any other meaning. I think we're a band with a lot of history now so it's nice to come up with something that doesn't have any history at all. We've had that title for about two years on a board and any other potential titles had to be written next to it. Other ones made more sense but we just liked this one, that's all we can defend it with."

Coldplay news round-up: BRIT Awards UK chart boost, Pushing the Envelope appeal, Google+

The BRIT Awards effect showed itself on the new UK sales charts for week beginning February 26th for a number of artists including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Florence + The Machine and, more than anyone, Adele, according to MusicWeek this week, in a round-up of the charts after the Brit Awards had finished.

With the Brits attracting its largest audience since 2005, there are also significant gains for Coldplay's fifth album Mylo Xyloto (up from no.11 to no.6, with 15,603 sales this week). Coldplay's performance was of their new single Charlie Brown, which sprints into the top 75 at no.30 (with 11,809 sales) as a direct result. Paradise is also up a place to no.23.

Next, stars including Coldplay, Dame Helen Mirren and Stephen Fry have designed and decorated envelopes for a U.K. literacy campaign, it has been revealed this week. Dame Shirley Bassey, Star Trek's Simon Pegg and Dame Judi Dench also tapped into their creative sides to transform everyday envelopes into works of art for the National Literacy Trust's annual Pushing the Envelope appeal.

Coldplay offered a cartoon depiction of the band, Mirren drew a playful picture of a woman literally pushing an envelope, while Fry doodled one of his trademark colourful ties. Fans can bid on the celebrities' envelopes on auction website eBay.com next month. All proceeds will benefit the National Literacy Trust, which helps disadvantaged families in the U.K. gain reading and writing skills needed for success. Meanwhile, while Britney Spears has set a blazing trail on Google+, as the first personal account to reach first 1 million, and then 2 million followers, when it comes to official Google+ pages, that accolade has just gone to Coldplay, writes The Next Web this week. Introduced in November, Google+ pages have been growing at an impressive rate, outpacing Twitter’s official brand accounts by about four times, but still lagging in comparison to Facebook.

When it comes to Google+ pages, the figure is slightly skewed as it includes the number of people who have followed the page as well. But according to ZoomSphere, a social media statistics site, Coldplay was the first page to cross the 1 million follower mark. Elsewhere in social media, Coldplay has 5.8 million followers on Twitter, a far cry from the top 10 with Lady Gaga leading with over 19 million followers. On Facebook, the official Coldplay page has 18 million followers, which also trails far behind the top 10 list.

Next in line on Google+’s top 10 most followed pages is yet another band. The official Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Google+ page has over 700,000 followers, followed by Pearl Jam, 106 and Park, Team Coco, ESPN, Sugarland, FC Barcelona, Train and Chelsea Football Club. It’s interesting that out of the top 10 Google+ pages, four of them are mainstream bands, all of which fit into the alternative rock band genre, with not a single official Google-related page, or anything remotely geeky in sight for that matter. Google’s own official page has just over 170,000 followers, while the official Google+ page has just over 140,000.

Coldplay round-up: Olympics closing ceremony, Wretch 32, Jimmy Kimmel reminder, supermarket tour (satire)

Coldplay are among the acts expected to appear in "an elegant mash-up of British music" to close the London 2012 Olympic Games, according to Digital Spy this weekend. Music director Kim Gavin said that the August 12 ceremony will be a "fabulous" collection of contemporary stars, as well as classical composers such as Elgar and Holst. "Without saying we have booked anyone, it goes from Elgar to Adele," he teased. "It is not just a pop concert, it is not just a classical rendition. It will be everything that we think is fabulous about British music. We are taking a box of fabulously well-done tunes. We are putting them together to write one piece of music that is fabulously balanced."

Danny Boyle is tasked with creating the London 2012 opening ceremony, while Underworld were appointed as musical directors in December. Sir Paul McCartney, Elton John, Muse, X Factor winners Little Mix and Britain's Got Talent gymnastic troupe Spelbound have all been tipped to appear at the July 27 event. Ronnie Wood confirmed last week that he has been approached to perform at both ceremonies with The Rolling Stones and The Faces.

Gavin added: "Usually it is something classical but in this case it is an elegant mash-up of British music," The AP reports him as saying. "It will not be just about the music but also about what makes Britain great. We are trying to introduce something that is an absolute melting pot of British creativity."

Meanwhile according to 411 Mania, during a recent interview, rapper Wretch 32 took some time out from recording his untitled third studio album to discuss the possibility of working with Coldplay in the future. The rapper also mentioned losing songs and lyrics for his new album when he accidentally dropped his phone in the bath, and how he lays down tracks when he's in the studio.

On Coldplay he said: "I'd love to get in the studio with them. Obviously I understand at the moment they are probably doing so many different things but if it could happen it would be amazing. When it comes to a band like Coldplay I think they emulate everything what music is about in this day and age and this century. I think they have a hint of an old school vibe as well as something slightly futuristic and it just manages to be so current."

Next, a reminder that Coldplay will perform on the seventh annual 'Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Academy Awards' special, televised live on ABC from Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre tonight (Sunday, February 26) immediately following the Oscar telecast and late local news. This show was performed earlier in the month - read all the reviews, photos and videos at the Coldplay Live forum (page 8 onwards) prior to the airing.

Other guests will include Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal, Charlize Theron, Don Cheadle plus many more. Coldplay's block party performance on the JKL outdoor stage will wrap up the special and include a performance of the band's latest single, "Charlie Brown." - which will also be part of Coldplay's three-song set when the band makes its debut on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday, March 2, performing in the show's Times Square studio.

Finally, The Poke must be running out of news if they have to write articles entitled "Coldplay annouce massive UK supermarket tour" - but that's what they've done. All in satire of course. Here's their article:

Britain’s Best Band Coldplay today announced a historic 30-date tour of the nation’s biggest supermarkets. Speaking after the Brits this week, where they won the award for ‘Music to Calm Pets With’ in the Music Like A Humming Fridge category, singer Chris Martin told a packed press conference: "Supermarkets are where our music really belongs. Fans are used to Tesco and Asda playing our songs, unless it’s the Christmas period obviously. But now they can have the pure experience of hearing us how we are meant to be heard, uninterrupted by tannoy announcements."

The rock legends, whose album ‘Hopes + Generalised Dreams = Harmonious Soundwaves’ is released next week, will see their tour culminate at Salford’s massive Tesco Extra. "There’s 185,000 square feet of floor space in that one," sang Martin in his beautiful sonorous cascade. He then switched his piano to Lazer. Tesco chief-exec Philip Clarke said, "It is expected that Coldplay will bring to the retail space a sense of prevalent hopefulness. A consumer will see our mile-long, 7ft-high stack of chocolate biscuits and their spirits will lift, but then, before their spirits crash back to earth with the sudden despair that pushing a trolley round a supermarket on Friday nights brings, Coldplay will come over the speakers and make them feel positive. In fact as the rock-gods’ music ascends towards the poignant arcs that made them famous, the consumer then feels anything is possible. It then buys more biscuits than it can ever eat."

The ambient megaband’s tour, ‘The Locally Sourced Organic Foodstuffs Tour’, includes Cleethorpes, Newcastle, and Liverpool. Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman said, "Most of the really huge stores might be in the north but it’s not our business to investigate any socio-economic reasons behind industrial-scale comfort eating. It’s our business to rock the place out!"

New Year's Day is often referred to as “guaranteed first hangover of the year”. For the British music industry, I’d hazard a guess that the day after the BRIT Awards sees a hilariously impressive spike in the number of email accounts set to auto-respond with “I’m not in the office today”.

Somewhat disappointingly - or indeed not, I find myself fully able to function today. But then, I did have a job to do last night...

From a crew perspective, the show was pretty full-on for under four minutes' worth of telly. Huge pyro, lasers, a huge ‘orb’ crammed with even more strobes, lasers and exploding stuff. Once the band jumped off the stage, the gear was strapped in and the whole stage flown into the roof above the heads of the diners below until the end of the show. Never a dull moment.

I was set up way out the back behind the stage - definitely the furthest I’ve ever been from the band during a performance that I can remember. For the rehearsal day I was pretty incredulous as I heard Will hit his drums in my in-ear monitors a good second or two before the cavernous arena echo of it made its way back into the draughty loading dock where my gear was piled up.

I did manage to make my way out to watch Chris’s rehearsal with Noel Gallagher though. Back in the day, I used to work (and for some time *live*) in a rehearsal studio complex where Oasis spent a good deal of time. I always had a huge amount of respect for the way that Noel carried himself back then. Seems he’s still a gent, too.

Their tune kicks off and Chris is unsure quite how he’s going to fit his piano into the fearsome wall of sound. With a little work though, it all starts to come together.

The piano is right next to Noel’s amps. As you’d expect, this is the place to be for getting the full effect of the Gallagher guitar. Noel stamps on a pedal and starts of a loop of glorious noise. Immediately Chris is on his feet and shouting “what the hell is that?”.

Chris has his iPhone out to record it, excitedly proclaiming it the most amazing thing he’s ever heard. Noel is laughing as the pedal loops away through the stack.

Fast forward to the dressing room on the show day and Chris is handing me the pedal responsible for all the fuss. It turns out that Noel has come in today and motioned Chris over to his dressing room next door with the words “I’ve got a little present for yer…”

Chris is holding it with great reverence and excitement. “Can you record what’s in here immediately? And then give it Rik? We’re going to take it back to the studio and run it through Jonny’s rig and mic it up”. The pedal is only the size of a block of butter, but I find myself carrying it through the backstage in both hands as though dropping it could send the whole place up in smoke.

Where it’ll end up, I’ve no idea, but if it finds its way into a song, Noel could easily be playing on the next record without ever having set foot in the studio. Wonderful madness…

The show went pretty damn well, I thought. You may well have seen for yourselves. They won one, too - which is always nice.

In a further reminder of my previous life, Blur take to the stage to remind us all what a majestic noise they make. There’s an aftershow bar and a boat moored out the back of the venue, heading up the Thames for a boozy night out. I take the quiet option and slip out the back door. It’s been a pretty enjoyable couple days. No point in milking it…

Coldplay has won best British Group at the BRIT Awards 2012 – an achievement that takes their tally for the BRITs now to seven awards. They also kickstarted the awards ceremony tonight (21st February) at London's O2 Arena with a show-stopping performance of the new single 'Charlie Brown' - backed with an impressive pyrotechnic display from underneath a giant pink neon disco ball. No stranger to the title, Coldplay previously took the trophy in 2001, 2003 and 2006 and also took Best British Group in 2001 and 2003 plus British Single in 2006. Coldplay took the title ahead of fellow nominees Arctic Monkeys, Chase & Status, Elbow and Kasabian.On winning the Best British Group, Chris Martin added: "We are so happy to get this award so thank you to everyone who voted for us, have a great night."

When asked what it meant to win the Brit Award for Best Group during tonight's winner's conference, Chris said: "Oh, everything. All we want to do now is release a fragrance, open a few restaurants and open a theme park, JLS-style. We're hoping to have it tied up by 2016, look out for that. To be honest, most British bands have split up. Blur have gone, Pulp have gone, Take That are on holiday, we're the only British band left on the pitch! But we'll take that."

Chris Martin later joined Noel Gallagher on stage for a performance of the former Oasis man's track 'AKA... What A Life' - Chris took to the piano alongside Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Noel was typically focussed and lead the group through a strong and loud rendition of his track.

Coldplay are expected to take to the stage to perform Princess of China with Rihanna as they did at the GRAMMYs last week, while Blur, who will receive a lifetime achievement prize tonight, are set to perform an 11-minute medley. There are also whispers that Noel Gallagher will be duetting with Chris Martin, and other tributes to the late Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse are planned for the show. The Brit Awards, being held at London's O2 Arena tonight (Tuesday), is set to feature Adele's live UK comeback after the singer took a break to recover from throat surgery. Sheeran leads the nominations with four nods while Adele and Jessie J are up for three each. Adele's 21 is the bookie's favouite to win best British album beating Sheeran's +, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, Florence & The Machine's Ceremonials and PJ Harvey's Let England Shake. Before William Hill bookies closed betting on Friday evening, Adele was the clear favourite with William Hill, at 1/10 to win Best British Album for '21'. Coldplay were at 9/1 and Florence and the Machine at 10/1.

However, Coldplay have been tipped to take home the gong for Best British Group over Kasabian, Chase & Status, Elbow and Arctic Monkeys. Sheeran is expected to be named best British male, battling it out with Professor Green, James Blake, James Morrison and Noel Gallagher.One Direction's debut track What Makes You Beautiful is favouite to win best single - voted for by listeners of Capital FM - over Adele's Someone Like You. Both Sheeran and Coldplay have backed Adele to win the best album prize with Chris Martin telling Radio 2: "Unless Adele somehow deletes her albums, I think we can come to the conclusion that [we won’t win]. I’m pretty sure of it." Modest Sheeran added: "To have the album nomination was the one that surprised me. I won't win it because Adele will win it."

Florence and the Machine is set to perform her latest single No Light, No Light in an Alexander McQueen dress. James Corden, who will host the awards ceremony for the second year running, promised an 'incredible' show. He told Xfm: "The show is going to be incredible. Coldplay are opening, which will be huge. They have spent a fortune on pyrotechnics to make it something really special. Blur will perform for 11 minutes at the end of the show - more than anyone has been given before for the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award. Add Adele, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher and you've got an incredible lineup."

Emeli Sande has already been named the winner of the Critics' Choice and will pick up her gong tonight. The show will be broadcast live on ITV1 from 8pm.

Brits Preview 2: Coldplay planning huge pyrotechnic opener for Tuesday's Awards night

Coldplay's opening performance at the Brit Awards 2012 has become a "logistical nightmare" for organisers, reports are suggesting today (Monday). Coldplay will be the first act to play at London's O2 Arena ceremony tomorrow night (February 21st) and have had health and safety officers worried about the amount of pyrotechnics they are using for the set.

A source told The Sun: "It has been a logistical nightmare and for a long time organisers didn't think they'd be able to go ahead with the plans. People have been running around the arena with clipboards for weeks trying to sort it out."

Meanwhile, James Corden - who will host the event - told Xfm: "The show is going to be incredible. Coldplay are opening, which will be huge. They have spent a fortune on pyrotechnics to make it something really special. Blur will perform for 11 minutes at the end of the show - more than anyone has been given before for the 'Outstanding Contribution To Music Award'. Add Adele, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher and you've got an incredible lineup."

Coldplay are up for the 'British Group' and 'Mastercard British Album Of The Year' awards at the ceremony, but have insisted that they will not win any of their categories.

They are competing against Adele in the album category, and the rockers have already conceded that Mylo Xyloto is unlikely to triumph against the worldwide success of 21. "Unless Adele somehow deletes her albums, I think we can come to the conclusion [that we won't win]. I'm pretty sure of it," Chris said last week. "You can be one of those artists that don't really care about them or you can, like us, love it, and we're always so grateful to be included. It's a kind of Olympics for a band. It's nice to win a medal."

Attention Australian fans! Coldplay could be coming to the Gold Coast in December

Has the Gold Coast stolen the Queensland leg of Coldplay's upcoming Australian stadium tour from under Brisbane's nose? It certainly looks that way, if reports from goldcoast.com.au are to be believed in the last 24 hours.

Metricon Stadium, at Carrara, is front and centre in the race to host a show as part of Coldplay's rumoured December tour Down Under after talks with the band's Australian promoter, Michael 'Chuggi' Chugg. The Sydney Swans supporter and three-time international promoter of the year winnner has steered tours by everyone from Madonna to ABBA, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac.

On the Coast to address a Metricon-sponsored Gold Coast Media Club lunch at Q1 on Friday, he confirmed he had held talks with Gold Coast Suns chief executive Travis Auld and chief operating officer Andrew Travis about possible concerts at the Carrara venue. "I was thinking about it on the plane on the way up. I've lost a lot of fucking money on the Gold Coast. I can't begin to tell you," Chuggi said. "Now you're trying to talk me into doing a big new show in December at the AFL ground. If the Suns win 10 games, I'll think about it."

Coldplay, whose single Paradise is currently the most-played song on Australian radio, performed a one-off show at Splendour In The Grass, at Woodford, in August last year. The band promised fans it would return soon for a full tour to promote its fifth album, Mylo Xyloto. Metricon has been given the thumbs up by fans, bands and promoters as the Coast's newest concert venue after the success of Foo Fighters' sold-out show for 37,000 punters late last year. With Madonna set to tour Australia early next year and The Rolling Stones reportedly planning another Aussie run, Metricon which has also held talks with the Big Day Out and other leading concert promoters could easily become concert central during the AFL off-season from October to January. Unlike Suncorp Stadium, in Brisbane, there is no restriction on the number of events Metricon can host, with applications assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Other stars tipped to announce Australian tours this year include Paul McCartney, Prince, Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead. The always-colourful and notoriously outspoken 'Chuggi' was in fine form at Friday's lunch, his expletive-loaded address rousing more laughs than most stand-up comedy routines. Many in the audience were friends and colleagues from his 50-year career. "I'll start by asking hands up who was born on the Gold Coast," Chuggi said. "That's what I fuckng thought. Ex gangsters, drug dealers, failed musicians, failed promoters, failed real estate agents, car salesman we've got them all. We love the Gold Coast."

Chuggi has been a regular visitor to the Coast over the years from his first visit across the border in the back of a van with Kiwi band The La De Das to checking out Tony Cochrane's Main Event concert with Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston at Sanctuary Cove. He said he could never forget the Coast after suffering a heavy loss in the wake of "the biggest disaster ever" ZZ-Top's show at the Surfers Paradise Raceway.

Brits Preview 1: Noel Gallagher tight-lipped on duet with Chris Martin at Tuesday's Brits - but doesn't rule it out

Noel Gallagher remains tight-lipped on his duet with Chris Martin at Tuesday's Brit Awards, according to The Sun this morning. Here is their article:

Think Florence and the Machine doing You Got The Dirtee Love with Dizzee Rascal in 2010 and Justin Timberlake with Kylie in 2003. But Noel Gallagher and Chris Martin on stage together for the first time this Tuesday will be pure class. Coldplay frontman Chris suggested the idea to former Oasis guitarist Noel before Christmas and they agreed it would be an ideal way to cap a brilliant year of gigs for both of them. I asked Noel if the duet was on and he replied with a nod and a wink: "I couldn't possibly comment."

If it wasn't true, the answer would have been: "Piss off, you Scottish fantasist."

A source added: "Chris and Noel have become good pals over the years. Noel has a lot of respect for Coldplay. He was blown away by their Glastonbury gig when he saw it on telly. They are both up for doing something special."

Noel, up for Best Male, has a number of tracks he could perform, although no rehearsals have been done yet. AKA... What A Life! with Chris hammering away on piano would be quality. I saw Coldplay live in LA last week and they were on brilliant form. They played Beatles song We Can Work It Out at a MusiCares gig in honour of Sir Paul McCartney and it was stunning. At The Grammys they performed Princess Of China from Mylo Xyloto with Rihanna, which was different class too. The flashing wristbands also burst into life during Paradise. Hopefully they will do the same at The Brits. Last night a Brits spokesman said: "There is lots of speculation about the performances next week but we can't confirm anything. You'll have to tune in on Tuesday."

There will also be a ten-minute Blur spectacular to close the show — the longest any Outstanding Contribution act has ever been given on the night. It'll be a night to remember.

Meanwhile, MusicMetric have been crunching data relating to the awards next Tuesday (February 21st) - as Adele, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran have top 'most pirated' list ahead of Brit Awards. According to them this means that Adele is set to dominate on Tuesday night.

By calculating the artists and releases most commonly downloaded by filesharers in the UK, an accurate prediction of who will win at next week's ceremony can be gained. Musicmetric have tipped Adele to win three awards and have her taking home the gongs for Best Album, Best British Female and Best Single for 'Someone Like You'. They also back Ed Sheeran to win Best British Male, Jessie J to win British Breakthrough Act and Coldplay and Foo Fighters to triumph in the Best British Group and International Group categories respectively.

They also name Rihanna as the likely recipient of Best International Female and Bruno Mars as Best International Male, with Nicki Minaj as the winner of the award for International Breakthrough Act. The Brit Awards will take place at the O2 Arena on February 21. Blur will receive the Outstanding Contribution To Music award at the 2012 event.

News round-up: Coldplay resigned to losing to Adele at Brits, Emeli Sandé, Kylie Minogue

Coldplay are resigned to losing out on the Best Album prize at the upcoming Brit Awards after witnessing Adele's 21 dominate this year's prizegivings, Chris Martin hinted the BBC Radio 2 interview with Jo Whiley on Tuesday. Coldplay have been nominated for Best Album for Mylo Xyloto, but they face tough competition from Adele, as well as Ed Sheeran (+), Florence and The MAChine (Ceremonials), and PJ Harvey (Let England Shake). But they're convinced the soul star will win the top honour, especially after she swept the board with six trophies at Sunday night's Grammys. Chris told BBC Radio 2, "Unless Adele somehow deletes her albums, I think we can come to the conclusion that (we won't win anything). I'm pretty sure of it." But Chris insists the band is just honoured to be nominated, adding, "You can be one of those artists that don't really care about them or you can, like us, love it, and we're always so grateful to be included. It's a kind of Olympics for a band; it's nice to win a medal."

The Brit Awards will take place at London's O2 Arena next Tuesday and don't forget you can still vote for Coldplay in the other nominated category to win Best British Group which is a public vote.

Meanwhile, Emeli Sandé has been confirmed as the tour support act for Coldplay's US shows later this year, according to media reports today (Thursday). Emeli - the Brits Critics' Choice winner will travel North America with Coldplay throughout March in a bid to crack the US music market. Sandé told the Daily Star: "Coldplay have been so supportive of me, they treat me very well. I want to take my music as far as I can so I will be doing some shows there in March."

Talking about her Brits Critics' Choice Award, she explained: "The award sits on my piano as inspiration when I'm songwriting. There are always some surprises on the night. I won't be performing at the actual Brits but maybe I will play at some of the after-parties." Meanwhile, Sandé's new single 'Next To Me' placed at number two on the UK midweek chart. Speaking about the cut, she added: "I wanted to capture that simple soul vibe people like Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone did so well."

And finally, Kylie Minogue have said Coldplay performing at the London Olympic Games would be 'spine-tingling', writes the Music-News website this week. Kylie took to the stage at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and has discussed the upcoming sports event taking place in the UK city later this year. Kylie says the experience is a thrilling one and the stage would welcome talented musicians like Sir Elton John and Coldplay. "That would be appropriate; Elton is a living legend. It would be sensational," she explained in an interview with Stylist when Elton's name was mentioned in the running. "And having just seen Coldplay recently that would be spine-tingling as well."

Just one problem Kylie - the opening ceremony of the London Olympics is 27th July 2012 - the same date as the second Coldplay concert in Montreal, Canada. The closing ceremony on August 12th however, is still a possibility...

The British media will get their turn at casting their eye on Coldplay's awards performance this time next week when they head to the Brits in London on 21 February, but the last 24 hours have seen the US papers go over Coldplay and Rihanna's Grammy's medley with a fine tooth comb. Some are even suggesting that Willie Nelson's cover of The Scientist that was shown in the commercial break right after Coldplay had finished was the best Grammy performance of the night! Below are just a selection of their reviews and are merely the tip of the iceberg - we'll get more in on the WikiColdplay page soon. Washington Post: It was not a tough act to follow: A too-long Coldplay performance that made all but the band’s biggest fans yawn. But Coldplay’s Grammy performance was quickly followed up by a better one — a Coldplay song, “The Scientist,” covered by Willie Nelson, in a commercial for Chipotle. The commercial actually debuted online in August, but the contrast of it following a Coldplay performance was a stark one: Grammy viewers tweeting along called it the best Grammy performance, even though it wasn’t even part of the show. Chipotle encouraged viewers to download the song on iTunes, with proceeds benefiting the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation. The two-minute-long commercial, which is the company’s first national television spot, highlighted Chipotle’s sustainable farming practices.

LA Times (Blogs): Coldplay, the band that sounds great when heard in the background of your local grocery store but somewhat boring at every other instance in life, then performed its Rihanna collaboration "Princess of China." Martin was all puppy-dog yearning when he was solo, and his band mates, adept at rocking sympathetically, then joined him for "Paradise." That being said, Coldplay's universe, what with its neon-lit graffiti, seems like a lovely place to take a nap.

Neon Tommy: Coldplay, "Paradise": Great song, great rendition. Chris Martin has such a soulful voice that just hearing him croon the opening notes (you know the ones I'm talking about) transports the listener. The neon graffiti background was visually appealing and in true Coldplay form, and made for an out-there perfomance worthy of the Grammys. Not to mention it looked like a piece out of a concert, not an isolated show performance. Needless to say, the band delivered and made up for the awkward duet with Rihanna.

Dallas Morning News: Foo Fighters, already winners of four Grammy Awards presented before the telecast, ripped it during the band's performance outside the main auditorium. Dave Grohl always sweats up a hard rock storm during the performance. Now we got Rihanna doing "We Found Love" with a bevy of dancers. She sure likes writhing on the floor. And on the other end of the musical spectrum if "Princess of China," her collaboration with Coldplay, also on. Then Rihanna walks off and Coldplay launch into "Paradise." I tell ya, these Grammy performances are like constant flipping the station on the radio dial. Almost sensory overload.

I'll be honest, I thought POC would be a disaster, especially after I saw Rihanna's outfit. But when Chris came out with that acoustic guitar I felt like he was making sure people knew he was a rocker. It's all well and good to perform with Rihanna on the record, but I thought non Coldplay fans watching would think they were some pop group, but Chris playing that acoustic version made me so proud. Contrary to many people on the board, I don't think PoC is selling out. But to those people who think it is, take a look at Chris up there sticking it to the man. That's the way I saw it at least! Admitingly though, Rihanna sounded drunk, and she probally was. I had low expectations for her and she still fell short of them. She seemed unenthusiastic. Sorry Rihanna fans......just my opinion. What is the problem guys? Why do we worry so much about last night? Okay, it wasn't that great, but they were rocking the Grammy's with the xylobands and the graffiti. Chris' voice wasn't good, but we know how beautiful he can sing and what a great person he is. [thanks sjors93]

Ugh, i'm just going to say this because i feel as though i have to. Just because you're a Coldplay fan, it doesn't mean you can't dislike a performance or song. You're no less of a fan if you simply dislike one of the performances or songs. It's better to face the facts than be in denial about a group you love. So how can 50 people say that the performance was brilliant? Don't get me wrong, Coldplay are always above the standard of many artists but you can't say that the performance was a perfect 10/10. I don't want to further hate and list the reasons why because it helps no one but you must open your eyes. People aren't perfect, so don't make them seem perfect but saying a performance was 10/10 flawless when it noticeably wasn't. [thanks Connor!42!]

Paradise was amazing and i think Chris was singing it good as always.. PoC unfortunatly wasn't that good, but mostly because rihanna fucked it up. She indeed looked drunk and het outfit was just horrible. Also i had hoped Chris and Rihanna would perform together, move together on the stage and stuff. But Chris was just standing there with his guitar. And though i liked the acoustic version of PoC, i would have liked it more if the whole band would play it. Sorry for my bad english.. Funny enough i didn't like the short version, so they must have done something good, because i wanted them to go on. Or maybe i was just curious if it would get better.. I voted a 7 btw.. Chris did say he was a bit ill recently, right? I chalked it up to that. To be honest a lot of the performances had weird sound quality to them-I think the acoustics in general were just not that strong for some reason, and a lot of people sounded "off" as a result. I still thought it was a good performance. I'd certainly rather listen to "can't sing" Chris than whatever the hell it was Nicki Minaj was doing. I liked "Princess" on acoustic-the original performance would've fit more with the overall show, but I'm glad they went acoustic for it instead and changed things up a bit, and the segue they did from Rihanna's own song to their duet to one of Coldplay's songs was a neat idea. I actually liked acoustic Princess of China. I thought it was a nice touch in between of very synth-heavy songs, and definetely it was something no one expected. To me Chris sounded very decent on PoC, I didn't hear any major flaws or something besides some variations to the original melody, usual in live performances. Rihanna wasn't flawless, but far from disaster too. Actually it was all nice, neat, interesting. Bombastic? No. I'm afraid the boys stepped into the field, where they don't feel very comfortable, thus the lack of chemistry with Rihanna and lack of contagious energy they usually show during their concerts. But, since Chris was ill, we can easily overlook it. Didn't listen to Paradise, tho. Just a bit tired with this song. [thanks lafinion]

The problem is Chris can't sing Paradise live. He's never been able to do it. He's a better singer than that, but when all people hear is an ehh Rihanna, and a off tune Chris, it sounds bad. I can't wait until they move on from Paradise promo, and go into CB promo. [thanks twitchy517]

I loved the Coldplay performance. Rihanna looked like a groupie from the 1970s (like Sabel Starr for example). Sabel wears a black dress like Rihanna and usually wears shorts like the ones Rihanna wore on stage. Rihanna also wore the same blonde hairstyle of Sabel and other groupies like Shray Mecham, Nancy Spungen. I think you should look up these groupies and see how much Rihanna copied their look. I'm wondering if Chris is reading anything negative and taking it hard. Any fan knows that he is a worrier and paranoid at times and takes things pretty hard. I know he's a big boy and all of that, but I still can't help but get defensive for them/him and feel bad if he's feeling bad. I'm a softie. As for the reviews, it's funny how the are all over the place. One says they rocked the house. Another said it was a highlight of the evening. Another said it wasn't their best performance. One said Rihanna never sounded better (huh?) while others says both had pitch problems. They were all over the place. Honestly, I think it's been a bit overblown. It wasn't bad. I wish the Rihanna thing never happened, but it was fine. Chris came to the states just days ago and has had 4 big events to do....while not feeling well. I'm sure they cancelled the Australia trip next week because he's been under the weather and needs time to rest his voice and get well. To me, Dave Grohl was advocating actual musicianship....people putting their mouth to a microphone and singing and playing an instrument - which our guys do. I know fans have a hard time overlooking the cut down to Coldplay in their video. I know I did, but I think things have been decent between the two since then. As for auto-tune, all you have to do is listen to one Coldplay song and realize that Chris doesn't use it. I'm going to choose to believe that Dave was cutting down the studio tricks that some use to make themselves sound perfect and those that don't play instruments or sing live. I dont think the Coldplay grammy proformace was bad at all. I dont know why people are being so negative. I wasn't so impressed with the Foo Fighters all their songs are sounding the same these days. Dave Gorhl cant sing live thats why he screams. [thanks SpittingFeathers]

It [Paradise] totally sounds awsome live! It does! And why criticize Chris´voice perfomance at grammynight?? I just watched the show on youtube - and he sounded great (even though, he was sick!)!! - and looked great, I might add! But you are correct - Rihanna didn´t deliver - her voice performance in POC was off tune and weak. Chris had to carry that song on his own - and so he did! I just wished, they had song more of the song - but then again...Rihanna didn´t sound great live so I guess, it was fine, they didn´t do more... Coldplay deserved to win in all the catagories, they were nominated in... [thanks fru.overvad]

Chris is my best singer and i think he's the best voice in the world .. I do love it! I'm full of respect and admiration for him, he put passions in his music and even when he made mistakes ... the power of the performance predoninates.. BUT, having said that, I can not deny that I didn't like the Grammys' performance at all. I'm trying hard to be positive about the change they're having but no... the loss of quality and passion, TO ME, is undeniable. I understand everything ... the succes, the tiredness, etc.. but I really hope they will take time to reflect about it!! I also hope that these criticisms (some extreme, actually) could help somehow. Grammy Awards 2012: Coldplay ft. Rihanna, Princess of China / Paradise - your reviews

Rihanna and Coldplay teamed up at the Grammy's last night to perform three songs between them. They played a medley, which consisted of We Found Love (Rihanna only); Princess of China (Rihanna and Chris Martin) and Paradise (Coldplay full band), to a rapturous audience, writes ContactMusic in a mini-review of Coldplay's Grammy performance on Sunday night. Below is the rest of their article and a collection of Coldplayer reviews of Coldplay's performance. Sadly Coldplay won none of the three Grammy's they were nominated for. The lights in the room dimmed as a slower version of Rihanna's hit We Found Love began. The singer, dressed in a see through cropped top and leather shorts, lay on the floor as she sang the first verse and chorus of the song. From there, it picked up speed as dancers emerged and Rihanna took off the long shirt she had been wearing over her ensemble. Towards the end of the song, Rihanna yelled 'Grammy's, make some noise for Whitney!', paying tribute to the tragic singer who died just a day before she was set to appear at the awards show. As We Found Love ended, the lights dimmed once more and Chris Martin emerged, with a guitar, to sing Princess of China, the duet with Rihanna that appears on Coldplay's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto. The song quickly segued into Coldplay's hit Paradise, with Rihanna leaving the stage at that point as Martin quickly joined his band on piano. The unlikely pairing of Rihanna and Coldplay are set to perform again, at the upcoming BRIT Awards, where, it is rumoured, they will sing Princess of China again...

There was also the following review from MTV, who said: "Rihanna stormed the Grammys stage on Sunday night with her new blonde do, kicking off her performance with the hit "We Found Love." Ri Ri, started things off solo, with only a piano to accompany her, before she launched into a full out party with plenty of backup dancers around. Coldplay would later join her for their collaboration on 'Princess of China'. The performance kicked off like a scene straight out of the thematically dark video for the track, with the Barbadian pop star leaning against a wall looking troubled under dark lighting with only a piano playing alongside her as she sang the track like a torch ballad. Looking gorgeous — and giving off a Tina Turner vibe — Rihanna rocked the blond locks she introduced recently, wearing a tight, belly-baring ensemble.

The laser lights, LED screens and synths kicked up soon enough, though, and Rihanna welcomed dancers to the stage and lit into a high-energy performance of the dance smash that kept with the feel of the song, devolving into a full-on rave, with the pop star front and center. Like many other performers and presenters at the show, Rihanna took a moment to honor the late Whitney Houston, demanding the audience, "Make some noise for Whitney!" Soon, the tempo backed down and the dancers departed, leaving Rihanna onstage with just Chris Martin strumming an acoustic guitar. The pair then started into the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration "Princess of China."

"Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it," Chris Martin told MTV News of the pop princess' involvement last fall. "And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we've been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music." Coldplay finished things up on an upbeat note with their song "Paradise" and fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

I think you guys are giving Rihanna too much hate! I'm not a fan of her music, but she wasn't horrible. Anywho, PoC was alright but felt awkward to me. I was really hoping that Coldplay would perform Charlie Brown but as you all know, they went with Paradise. I don't like their live version of Paradise at all! To me it feels slow and dragged out. The album version is much better but I can respect Coldplay for wanting to actually play the music instead of using fake recordings. I just think that the string instruments really make Paradise what it is. I thought Chris' singing for Paradise was a bit sloppy but from what you guys were saying, he wasn't feeling well (hope he gets better!). Overall, I think Coldplay needs to take some time off to relax. They've been playing at a lot of shows. Back with AROBTH and even X&Y, Coldplay was a nice fit for the United States. Now however, I feel as if Coldplay has really outgrown the United States. By that, I mean a lot of their hard core fan base lives outside of the United States. I just think of Coldplay as more of a global band now. And I don't think that Coldplay gets enough respect here in the States either. Anyway, I'm SUPER PUMPED to see Coldplay for the 3rd time in July at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C!!! I hope they get plenty of rest before they come so they're totally relaxed and energized. Coldplay! Why not Charlie Brown?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!? WHY!?!?! WHY!?!?! You just released the music video for it AND if Chris really was sick, then why perform a song that he already has trouble singing even when he isn't sick?? Charlie Brown has a lot less high notes! oh well, i just have to put that performance past me. Hopefully an Australian tour announcement in the next 2 weeks. fingers crossed. Paradise is one of their worst songs live. I'm not saying it's shit because Coldplay are already above so many other artists but it's one of their worst. Not too disappointed by all this, I thought POC was pretty amazing, Chris sang surprisingly well. I think Charlie Brown would have been too much in contrast with Rihanna, but even now it showed what different artists they are. They didn't have the right chemistry. Certainly not Chris's fault, he looked confident.

I Loved the Paradise performance. Princess of China was not awesome but ok , I think partly as chris and rihanna had very little chemistry and Rihanna doesn't have such amazing vocals live and chris also was a bit shaky . Overall, it wasn't that bad. Paradise made the Staples Centre look like a Stadium show which was great! I think Coldplay better not venture into duets much after MX. I guess they have figured out by now they are not good at sharing the limelight, especially Chris.. MX is not strong enough like the other coldplay stuff so I predicted they wouldn't win , But I think we can bet on the boys to pleasantly surprise us in the future with a crazy amazing album again like ViVa (Rock not pop like MX which they aren't that strong at )! I think Rihanna has a nice/"diving" voice with lots of natural cool movements, can really "fly" it anywhere; the textures of her voice are very diverse and sensitive - I may suggest that she should try songs like Masquerade by Carpenters. She was a bit nervous in POC than her own song. I like Co.'s shirts; but it is also true Chris need to rest his voice. For the acoustic version, I think you can make it more peaceful/calm [or even making a new version with a few modifications] than the normal stadium style by a band. As by two, there are more details/delicacies to deliver/present. To say the least, it is not an easy acoustic song to sing comparing to the most. So, good try. [thanks RedBalloon]

It is the day after the night before and my opinion hasn't changed now that I've seen the performance a couple of times. I'm still disappointed. I was so hoping for the album version of PoC, not an acoustic one. It just felt to me that they were taking it a bit easy with only a guitar, because there was almost no time to rehearse or something. Of course, they both sung it well, but it definitely wasn't as spectacular as I had hoped. [thanks R23]

PoC was as awkward as I expected it to be. And transitioning from slow-to-fast was jarring in both cases. Paradise was better but still weak compared to them live. They all need a break because they seem to be overdoing it massively. Also: very glad Foo Fighters nabbed the awards in the category that Coldplay were in. Sorry but ETIAW (not rock) winning 'best rock song/performance' verses 'Walk' (actually rock) would've been atrocious. [thanks Nattatouille]

Coldplay needs to keep their heads up. This is why. Rihanna's performance of We Found Love, her singing and dancing. Then having to transition to PoC, a slower song. Having to get into a completing different style and tempo with Chris. An acoustic even. Was a lot to expect it to be perfect. Four performances in a span of four days. Can't expect each show to be flawless. The bands transition into Paradise is nothing not to be proud of. Listened again to the television broadcast and nothing could be wrong about it and so they didn't win tonight. There will be other nights, I'm sure of that. [thanks Postcards]

Sure, Rihanna didn't sound good during POC. (I didn't think Chris sounded bad at all to be honest.) Sure, Chris wasn't in top form tonight, but it wasn't his worst either, and we all know he's been sick. Sure, the whole xyloband thing could have worked a little better. Sure, it's disappointing that they didn't win anything. BUT.... It was a surprise that they were even nominated this year considering the album wasn't even eligible. It was amazing to be nominated amongst so many artists. Come on now, it wasn't their worst performance. Paradise isn't always questionable live! They'll get 'em next year. I went back and watched the DVR, and I thought the boys did a good job. The whole Rihanna thing should have been scrapped. The boys do much better on their own. Chris held up his end of the bargain with POC in my opinion, but Rihanna didn't. Of course, ouor boys are truly LIVE and don't, thank God, rely on lip syncing and other tricks, so all in all, it was great. Coldplay, you are the greatest!! [thanks LdySpace]

That was one of the worst Paradise performances i've heard so far! Rihanna sounded even more crappy near the end in PoC. Pff, huge disappointment. I don't like the combination of songs at all. They should have started with PoC, than Paradise followed by Rihanna's 'We Found Love'. Now this acoustic PoC version sounded twice as crappy after an OK and danceable We Found Love. [thanks Jurr]

Seen Paradise live. Still hated it. The fact that even a lot of the members here who usually defend every aspect of the band are disappointed by this performance just goes to show you how weak it was, both in performance delivery and song choice. Politik was never a single, yet that didn't stop Coldplay from kicking ass with it at the 2003 show. Face it, this was never meant to be their year, especially with their only nominations being weak singles that were released before the album was, which isn't even eligible until next year. Maybe this bad moment could save Coldplay career... maybe they NOW know they have to concentrate all the efforts on music and not on the rest, like AROBTTH times... Rihanna and Coldplay duet was too poor for a Grammy performance, Paradise is now overplayed everywhere and the three prizes for which Coldplay were nominated are now in the hands of who deserved them... PoC performance was average--the synth drop is the best part of the song (plus it would have sounded epic live and it would have given the guys the chance to introduce their Xylobands with a bang). Chris was singing off-key in one part of it. Paradise was below average. Poor Chris keeps having to perform while sick. And no awards. Disappointing night, overall. [thanks ColdplayingfromKansas]

This is my take on the awards tonight, there was nothing really all that bad about the performance, just nothing outstanding. I think chris's voice sounded fine, and paradise sounded pretty good. I do however wish that rihanna's part of the performance never happened. I mean it sucked hard, but PoC was okay, acoustic was nice and the lalalas sounded cool. Paradise was echoey and distorted but that was just the venue, a lot of the other songs sounded like that too. Any small vocal mistakes by Chris were few and far between. I also think that Coldplay should have one at least one of their etiaw awards IMO. Xylobands were cool. It could have been so much better, but it was fine for the most part. IMO everything coldplay did was good (not amazing) and all the bad was rihanna's fault. I'm disappointed but there's always next time. [thanks Car Kids]

Looks like someone at Coldplay HQ had a bit of a brain malfunction... they should have released the Charlie Brown single by now and then promoted it at the Grammys, instead of Paradise which loads of people are sick of hearing by now Also, the acoustic Princess of China was nice, but I would have rather had them play the whole song so the rest of the band could have got a bit more screen-time. Rihanna's performance was bleh... The POC acoustic was great IMO, my guess is they kept it acoustic cause of Chris's voice. Paradise was... safe? Considering Chris is sick, he did pretty good. I was expecting more Xylobands, dunno if the stream I was watching just didn't showcase the color, or if the audience just wouldn't get their hands up. On the other hand, their set with the MX graffiti was great. Hopefully they'll be back to perform next year, since we know MX will be eligible for awards. And am I the only one secretly hoping that Coldplay, or at least the Xylobands will be part of the big finale? Fix You would be a fitting finale and tribute .. Rewatched the performance on the west coast (finally!), in HD versus a little live stream from the east coast airing. Everything looked great, the set and the color was amazing. Sadly, everything sounded weak. Xylobands were pretty good, but not anything like I was expecting (e.g. the Xfactor performance). Better luck next year, and at the Brits. [thanks LVI56]

Interesting how others thought the performance was "bombastic" and yet we criticize it to the wall. Granted it wasn't incredible like some other dozens of performances and shows we've seen the boys do, but it wasn't terrible (re: Nicki Minaj's onstage slaughter-exorcism, anyone?). I rarely comment on these forums, U usually just read other coldplayers comments. and last time i did comment fellow coldplayers picked on me for my bad grammer and composition, so please forgive me....but i feel like i wanted to see if anyone else agreed with me that someone in coldplay's management is gonna lose there job after this album... the decision to go with etiaw for the lead in single was a terrible one, i think we all agree with that now, and the charts also agree... and also the fact that the CB video release was delayed and then released before an official announcement of a CB single release. when do artist ever release a music video before the actuall record is released. by now mx has lost alot of momentum and CB might have been a great single months ago but now it may not chart as high. it just seems to me that there is some obvious disagreeing in the coldplay camp..sometimes a band has to do just that be a band and stick to playing there music and have other people decide when and how to release an lp, and it seems like the band might have to much control over these matters...they should leave it to the experts... or better experts which is my point exactly. Ok, so this wasn't CP's best performance live. But let's face it. The deck was stacked. As soon as they were put in a category with Tony Bennett and the late Amy Winehouse, you knew that was a losing cause. Every year, the Academy has a love affair with someone-this year it was the Foos. No offense to the Foos. When X&Y came out, it was up against the monster known as U2 and How to Dismantle... For VLV, 7 nominations, but Robert Plant and Allison Krauss were the hot acts. Worldwide CP fans know how the boys perform live and what a treat it is to be there. Someone else has mentioned that Paradise was the hit up for the award and that's more than likely why it was chosen. One wonders what the sequence of acts would have been if Ms. Houston hadn't passed away the night before. If CP is playing early, then I'll bet Charlie Brown and the Xylobands would have rocked the house. Instead, it got buried in the middle. The Grammys just aren't what they used to be. It rewards long time acts for staying power-the Foos, the Chilis, Bob Plant, etc. It's all about getting the almighty ratings and putting the hottest acts on. And as a final comment-Dave Grohl hit a home run with his comments. i don't think it was aimed at CP, but maybe the other "Pop" categories. Gaga, Brown, Kanye, Jay-Z. I'm just sayin'.... I love Coldplay, hands down. I've noticed from years ago, they never do their best in the artificial environment of televised performances. Chris almost always seems nervous and hyper and somehow his voice is off. Last night was the same. (I didn't know he was ill until reading some comments above). The music itself was good, the vocals weak, even in the chorus when the other guys sing...they sounded soft and almost non-existent. It makes me sad, b/c I know what they're capable of, yet they never seem to express that on TV in front of mainstream America. I guess that's a good thing. The POC duet was not good either. Rhi was out of breath from her previous performance, and the two voices never meddled well. There were awkward transitions from her song to POC then into Paradise. Good idea in theory, but just didn't work well on stage.

I will say, that in the category of best rock song (or whichever award was televised), Foo Fighters were the weakest band in that category; up against Mumford and Sons, Radiohead, CP and Decemberists, they were the least interesting to me...I do not understand how they swept all those awards. I haven't read everything everyone else has written here. But I wanted to put my two cents in on the Adele conversation. She is a different performer; beautiful voice, with the ability to convey emotion, so much so, that I get chills and choke up every time she starts a song. She chooses not to be glitzy, glammy and over-produced like Rhi-Rhi and Gaga and Katy Perry and Nicky and on and on... I AM SO GLAD TO SEE THAT! She does her own thing, her own way. She was gorgeous and stunning, and I rather look at her standing on stage in a simple black dress singing, than seeing Rhianna half naked and dancing like a stripper. Boring some say, but that is RAW talent. Go Adele. She deserved every Grammy she won! [thanks yeshe]

After 3,5 hrs of sleep my phone woke me up: 2 am, Coldplay time. Start my laptop, find the right link to a good stream and sit around and wait for the boys to appear on my screen. And then finally it started. First I had to sit through 'We Found Love' from Rihanna. Nice song, but performance is too much slut-like (sorry). Then the camera focused on Chris. Lovely clothes, looks good. He starts strumming his guitar and starts to sing. You could clearly hear he was nervous. Nervous about the first performance of PoC live with Rihanna, nervous for his voice when he's sick? On the other hand, Rihanna wasn't in tune at all. She was pretty much gasping for air and trying to deliver anything out of her that would tune with Chris. I was quite surprised by the acoustic version. I expected it to be like on the album: more dancable and probably favoured by younger audience. But thinking of Paradise following, this acoustic version was a nice transition from 'We Found Love' to the second part of their performance. I can't choose which one would have been more appropriate in this setting and which one would have been better to promote. The choice for Paradise was somewhat interesting too. It sounded and looked ok, but again Chris' voice was a little shaky and he had to squeek some tones out of his throat. Maybe they had to do Paradise because it's on the Grammy-album, but I would've prefered to hear 'Charlie Brown'. They could have put CB into the picture more than it is now and realy promote the single. But maybe his voice couldn't handle this song at the moment. It would've been great though if on the screen behind Coldplay they would show the CB music video and also the video for 'We Found Love' when Rihanna performed her song. Hmmm, Deja Vu? After all, I enjoyed watching it (as I do with every single Coldplay-related thing that isn't hatefull to Coldplay). I stuck around till 4 am and went of to bed for 2 more hours of sleep. Energy-wise this nightbreak wasn't such a great idea: I had a tough day at work, but watching and reading about Coldplay when back home cheered me up (accompanied with a piece of chocolate). Grammys preview: Coldplay and Rihanna rehearse 'Princess Of China' ahead of Sunday's awards

Coldplay and Rihanna have been busy rehearsing for the two acts' duet at this year's Grammy Awards on Sunday (12th February). Coldplay will perform 'Princess Of China' with Rihanna at the ceremony and according to Phil Harvey – it should be one of the stand out performances of the night.

"Chris and rihanna just rehearsed princess. Absolutely beautiful. PH," he said on Coldplay's Twitter account earlier this weekend (10th February). Both acts are also due to attend this month's BRIT Awards and could team up once again to perform the track. It is also confirmed by BBC that Chris Martin will join former Oasis man Noel Gallagher on stage at the event.

Coldplay's nominations are as follows:

It was also announced that Coldplay was featured on the 2012 Grammy nominees album. Coldplay contributed the track Paradise to the compilation, which also features tracks by fellow Grammy nominees Katy Perry ("Firework"), Adele ("Rolling In the Deep"), Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks"), Mumford and Sons ("The Cave"), Maroon 5 ("Moves Like Jagger" Featuring Christina Aguilera), and Foo Fighters ("Walk"). The album was released on Universal Republic on January 24th, with a portion of sales benefitting the Grammy Foundation and MusicCares Foundation. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday 12 February. (Mylo Xyloto was not eligible for any awards, as it was released after the cut-off date of 30 September 2011.)

However, the Grammys have been clouded by news that Whitney Houston has died on the eve of the Grammy Awards she once reigned. She was 48. Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice was ravaged by drug use and her regal image was tarnished by erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown. Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said Houston was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton. "There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent," Rosen said. A Los Angeles County coroner's official said early Sunday that her body had been taken to a morgue. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said the cause of death was unknown.

The 54th annual Grammy awards will still take place tomorrow night at 8pm Eastern Time, and the ceremony promises to be the most somber iteration in recent memory. Tribute plans have not yet been finalized, but organizers will doubtlessly be working late into the night to incorporate a memorial aspect into a show set to include performances by Coldplay, Rihanna and Paul McCartney; all can be expected to pay homage to the late star. Others have already begun. “Nothing I could write on Twitter could possibly express what Whitney Houston means to me personally and professionally,” wrote songwriter Claude Kelly, a frequent Houston collaborator, earlier this evening. “Nothing. Speechless.”

Houston was one of the most celebrated artists in recent memory. She sold over 55 million records in the U.S. alone, perhaps best known for her work on the soundtrack for The Bodyguard. But she fell victim to offstage demons, struggling with substance abuse issues while enduring a tumultuous relationship with New Edition singer Bobby Brown.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in 2002 interview. Just 48 years old when she passed away, Houston now joins the ranks of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse–gifted stars gone too soon. If there’s any solace to be taken, it’s the fact that stars like Jackson continue to live on through productions like Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour. Coldplay perform 'We Can Work It Out' at MusiCares Paul McCartney Tribute (new pictures)

Coldplay, Katy Perry, Tony Bennett and Neil Young plumbed Paul McCartney’s vast songbook in taking the former Beatle on a musical journey of his more than 50-year career, writes the Washington Post this weekend, in a review article of the MusiCares Paul McCartney tribute concert in Los Angeles (10th February). They joined James Taylor, Diana Krall and Foo Fighters among others in launching Grammy weekend Friday night by honoring McCartney as the MusiCares Person of the Year. McCartney, who turns 70 in June, was toasted for his musical achievements and philanthropic work two days before the Grammy Awards. “It’s great for me to be here,” he told the crowd in the Los Angeles Convention Center. “It’s fantastic to hear all these fantastic artists doing my songs.”

The dinner menu even reflected his vegetarian lifestyle, from the tomato and fresh mozzarella tower to the main course of grilled seitan and roasted vegetables in puff pastry. Seitan is a wheat gluten used as a meat substitute.

The former Beatle singled out Young’s rowdy version of “I Saw Her Standing There” and “all the others putting nuances on the songs I didn’t know were there.” He was on his feet leading the applause after Foo Fighters tore through the Wings hit “Jet.” Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said, “We love Paul and we’re happy to be here” before launching into “We Can Work It Out.”

It also was a working night for McCartney, who capped an opening medley by the cast from the Beatles’ ”Love” by Cirque du Soleil with “Magical Mystery Tour.” At the end of the evening, McCartney turned the vast hall into an intimate jazz club with “My Valentine,” a song he wrote for new wife Nancy Shevell, and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” two cuts off his latest album, “Kisses On the Bottom.” He was accompanied by Krall on the piano.

He whipped off his jacket and raced to the piano for the Wings song “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five.” He strapped on the bass for a closing medley of “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End,” with Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and former Eagle Joe Walsh backing him. Alicia Keys performed a soulful “Blackbird,” tweaking the lyrics to sing “I’ve just been waiting for this moment to be free.”

“I never knew how much this song is about me,” she said. Perry fooled the audience when her four-piece backing band launched into the opening notes of “Live and Let Die.” She quickly switched to “Hey Jude,” leading McCartney and Shevell in a crowd sing-along of the chorus as Perry conducted with a sparkly baton. Perry wore a large pale pink floral bud hat that would have fit in well at the Kentucky Derby. Bennett lent a swinging touch to “Here, There and Everywhere,” while Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas performed a bluegrass-tinged “No More Lonely Nights.’”

“Hello, sir,” Norah Jones cooed to McCartney as she settled in at the piano to sing the Beatles tune “Oh! Darling.” British comedian Eddie Izzard got laughs with his trademark rambling, this time a whimsical story of McCartney’s life that bore little resemblance to the facts. He eventually got serious, saying: “For Paul McCartney, words are not needed. The music speaks for itself.”

Among the star-studded crowd of 2,800 were Yoko Ono, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, David Crosby, Rosanna Arquette, Bonnie Raitt, Berry Gordy, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, music executive LA Reid, songwriter Diane Warren, Piers Morgan, and actor John Stamos.

Friday’s dinner and auction produced the highest-grossing evening in the tribute’s 22-year history, with more than $6.5 million raised, said Recording Academy president Neil Portnow. MusiCares, run by the Recording Academy, provides financial assistance to individuals in the music industry during times of need. Portnow said the charity served 2,700 people in 2011, the most in a single year.

He said Perry has pledged to donate a minimum of $250,000 to MusiCares from sales of a benefit single she was moved to record after learning more about the organization. Coldplay postpone Sydney/Australia visit later in February with rumours of illness within the band

Coldplay have postponed a promotional visit to Sydney, hinting at plans for a full Australian tour later this year, that is according to various Australian sources including Sky News Australia today.

Coldplay due to perform two intimate shows for 2DAY FM and Sunrise during a brief stop on February 16th and 17th. Coldplay blamed personal reasons for having to pull out, but they has promised to return soon. "We sincerely apologise to our Australian fans for having to postpone next week's scheduled trip," Coldplay said in a statement. "We miss you guys and we promise we'll make it up to you. In fact, stay tuned for a big announcement soon."

It has recently been reported that frontman Chris Martin is suffering jet-lag and a cold, but the band is expected to go ahead with its performance with Rihanna at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Coldplay last visited Australia for their one-off Splendour In The Grass headline set in July. Their single Paradise is currently at number eight on the ARIA chart.

Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher BRITs collaboration revealed on BBC Radio 2

Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher will perform together at the 2012 BRITs ceremony on 21st February, according to a Radio 2 interview on Jo Whiley's show yesterday - so say MusicWeek and the official BBC6Music twitter account. The news was first revealed by BRIT Award presenter James Corden who said in a Radio 2 interview with host Jo Whiley, "I think — and I don’t know if this is true and I'm almost certain that I’m not supposed to tell you — that Chris Martin is going to accompany [Noel Gallagher] on the piano. I just think that would be amazing."

The annual music celebration will take place on February 21 and confirmed performers so far include Adele, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Florence + The Machine, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Rihanna and Olly Murs. Coldplay and Adele have been named as early favourites to nab the major awards at this year's Brit Awards by bookmakers. Coldplay are favourites to win Best British group at 1/2, just behind are Kasabian, who are 4/1, then Chase & Status and Elbow who are both 7/1 and Arctic Monkeys, who are ranked at 8/1 to win. You can vote for Coldplay at the Brits website now!

Meanwhile, Adele is the overwhelming favourite to win the award for Best Award for her monstrously successful second album '21', with William Hill giving her odds of 2/7 to take home the award. The 'Someone Like You' star's odds are far ahead of the other contenders, which are Florence & The Machine at 5/1, Coldplay, who are 7/1 to win for Mylo Xyloto, Mercury winner PJ Harvey, who has been given odds of 10/1 and Ed Sheeran, who is rated at 12/1 to win with his debut record '+'.

Charlie Brown video released: Media and blogs report on Coldplay's 'romantic rave'

Coldplay have finally unveiled the Charlie Brown video, which features the Xylobands first seen during the recent European tour and The X Factor final last year. In another vivid video, shot in London, Coldplay are seen performing in the middle of a jumping crowd of fans who are all wearing the Xylobands that light up in time to the music.

Coldplay once again teamed up with Mat Whitecross who directed the shoot. English actress Antonia Thomas and Shameless‘ Elliott Tittensor star as a young couple in love throughout the video. Misfits' Antonia Thomas can be seen walking to the show while a hooded figure leaps over rooftops, steals a car and then comes to whisk her away to the venue where the band are performing. Misfits fans will be reminded of the character Simon, who was Alesha's (played by Thomas) love interest who was often seen wearing a hoodie during the E4 show. The show gets rowdy with couples locking lips in the crowd and the audience getting showered in neon-coloured paint.

MTV: When we think Coldplay videos, we think melodramatic slow-motion visuals (see: "Fix You") that ache with so much emotion you want to re-think every decision you've ever made in your life. But their latest, "Charlie Brown," ditches sad, philosophical dramatics for a crazy night out at a glow-in-the-dark club. The infamous "Peanuts" character that shares the song's name doesn't make an appearance, but instead we get clips of a young couple on a mission to find each other. Quick glimpses offer the pair racing through the city to meet while montages of the band rocking out in full rave attire -- glow paint, glow sticks and glowing instruments -- are interspersed between the suspenseful narrative. Later, the couple whoops it up while recklessly speeding in a car, and that's when we learn why they were in such a rush: they're running late to the band's concert, duh. No one wants to be tardy for a Coldplay party.

Billboard: It seems music stars have voted Feb. 3 the perfect date to release new videos, with Madonna, Drake, Adam Lambert, M.I.A. and now Coldplay debuting fresh clips today. In Coldplay's clip for third "Mylo Xyloto" single "Charlie Brown," Chris Martin and the boys lead a black light rave comprised of mischievous teens covered in neon paint. It's a little less warm and fuzzy than, say, the globe-trotting elephant of their "Paradise" video, but less of a downer than the eternally cool clip for "The Scientist." If it weren't for the shots of Martin spiritedly strumming his acoustic guitar on the dance floor (right, because raves are typically soundtracked by feel-good pop rock), the video plays like a scene straight out of U.K. TV hit "Skins." Good-looking teens making out and partying? Check. Spray paint-related vandalism? Check.

PopCrush: It doesn’t include any cartoons or Vince Guaraldi piano, but Coldplay‘s new video clip for ‘Charlie Brown,’ their latest single from the chart-topping ‘Mylo Xyloto,’ does feature plenty of eye-catching visuals — along with all the soaring melody you’ve come to expect from the band. Helmed by Mat Whitecross, who directed the 2006 documentary ‘The Road to Guantanamo,’ the ‘Charlie Brown’ video depicts the band playing in the middle of a rowdy crowd, most of whom are bedecked with glowing wristbands that light up in time to the music, with pulsing neon lights strobing the audience. Interspersed with the rave clips are scenes of a young couple (the female played by Antonia Thomas from the British sci-fi series ‘Misfits’) who make romance on the streets of London. The third single from ‘Mylo Xyloto,’ ‘Charlie Brown’ finds Coldplay in urgent, uptempo form, and singer Chris Martin indicated it was one of his favorite tracks from the record last year, when he told NME “We know our lyrics are a bit s— … But the ones for ‘Charlie Brown,’ I like them a lot.”

PrefixMag: “Charlie Brown” is the third single to be lifted from Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto, and it follows in the breezy footsteps of the prior “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall.” Anyone who prefers Chris Martin’s band in bittersweet “Yellow” mode isn’t going to find what they’re looking for here—this is the kind of bombastic pop that feels specifically tailored for gigantic stadium and arena audiences. The video features the band playing at the most sanitized rave you’ll ever see in your life, complete with lasers, glow sticks, face paint and a few make-out sessions. Martin jumps up and down like a wild-eyed bobblehead doll for most of it, perhaps in an attempt to relive his pre-Gwynnie youth.

Dose: So your Friday night plans involve stealing a Volvo, picking up your hot ASBO girlfriend and making out 'til dawn at some underground dance party. But hey -- it's OK, it's cool, it's as chill as a '90s Chill Out compilation. It's not like your mom will be sitting home, crying over your preschool graduation photos and Googling the title of the new Madonna album, trying to figure out where you went astray. Or at least she won't once you show her Coldplay's new video for "Charlie Brown." All raves involve nice, adult, superfamous British chaperones, don't you know? (We're referring to Coldplay, of course, who perform their latest Mylo Xyloto single from the middle of a glow-stick-illuminated club full of kids.) But Coldplay's good, clean, soft-rocking fun isn't all that's going on in the Mat Whitecross-directed clip. (Fun fact: Whitecross and the band go way back; he directed their first-ever video, "Bigger Stronger"). Just like Mylo Xyloto, the video for "Charlie Brown" is a sorta vague love story, and fans of UK sci-fi series Misfits will recognize Antonia Thomas as the female romantic lead -- the Xyoloto (?) to one wiry, hoodied thug's Mylo.

Huffington Post: It's not every day you get to attend a rave headlined by Coldplay. Raves are for young folk, and young folk aren't going to Coldplay concerts anymore. They're at, like Kreayshawn house parties or something? But in this shiny new video for "Charlie Brown," off last year's Mylo Xyloto, Chris Martin is officially the coolest cat at what Prefix rightly calls "the most sanitized rave you'll ever see in your life." It kind of looks like a Lite-Brite exploded in everyone's face at this rave, and you know what? It's kind of nice! The kids look happy and healthy, and they're wearing nice practical sneakers, and sure, there's some young love, but it looks responsible. And meanwhile, Chris Martin is in his own world of one, spinning in a circle while no one tries to violate him in any way, having a grand ol' time. So sure, if this is the rave Coldplay wants to play their most dollhousey jam at, we're down. One no-drug, pure sugar pixie stick over here, please!

Hit Fix: For all their yearning ballads and poetic imagery, it turns out that Coldplay just wants to dance. Chris Martin and co. travel to a colorful U.K. rave in their latest video, for the new single "Charlie Brown," although the music itself is very un-rave like. "Charlie" is as Coldplay as it gets: Soaring melodies powered by a catchy circular riff meshing jangly guitars and high-pitched keyboards give way to Martin's sexy croon, as he sings about going out at night to get his freak on. It also includes a lyric that wouldn't sound out-of-place in a Craig Finn song: "Took a car downtown/where the lost boys meet/took a car downtown/and took what they offered me." Things slow down and get acoustic so the hot young couple at the center of the video can make out. Then the video explodes again -- literally -- as they watch fireworks and maybe vandalize a car (it's hard to tell). It's all a bit too silly and overly earnest, but in a very inoffensive way (like Coldplay themselves).

Idolator: If new videos from Madonna, Adam Lambert, and M.I.A. weren’t quite enough for you on this clip-heavy Friday, then we are sorry you’re so picky, but perhaps Coldplay is more your speed. The boys behind Mylo Xyloto may not be the first to spring to mind when you think of a dark club with plenty of fluorescent lights and hanky panky, but that’s exactly what they deliver in “Charlie Brown,” which manages to depict what looks like an awesome, fun-filled romantic night out and still leave us feeling a little glum in the end (in the best way, most Coldplay-ish way possible). So get your Snoopy dance ready and watch Mr. Paltrow & co. in “Charlie Brown” below. Per usual, Coldplay makes us feel ecstatic, energized, and melancholy all at the same time in this appropriately beautiful video for such a haunting track. Which might be exactly what the titular Peanuts character meant when he always said: “Good grief.” But hey, at least the colors are bright!

Spin: Coldplay know how to please a crowd, which isn't as easy or unimportant as snobs would have you think, or else everybody could do it. If there's any justice in the world, "Charlie Brown" will be the most crowd-pleasing song from last year's Mylo Xyloto. Yes, Chris Martin and the lads sound like they're trying to please us — there's one of those whirling "Clocks"-style intro, a language-transcending "woo ooh" hook, and a trace of Arcade Fire's harrowed urgency in the verses — but it'd be churlish to deny how much they succeed. With Valentine's Day approaching, Coldplay has revealed a "Charlie Brown" video that shows exuberant young love in a rave's neon light. Which, as it happily turns out, is yet another hugely appealing way to encounter this song. The MDMA-friendly day-glo color scheme fits the "we'll be glowing in the dark" hook and the swirling vocal intro that recalls the first time electronic dance music was supposed to conquer the States. And the giddy couples tumbling head over heels for each other speak to the sappy, old-fashioned romantic at the heart of every good Coldplay song. Pass the box of chocolates, or the Ecstasy, whichever's handier, and stick around for the piano-and-strings slow dance at the end. [Editor's note: Coldplay went all-out with the editing on this one, attempting to make us feel like we're in the rave with a bazillion quick cuts. There isn't one shot in this video longer than a split second, which we learned while trying to nab a screengrab. Thanks for making our lives hard, Coldplay!]

Exclaim!: Despite Top 40 favourites Coldplay's relatively squeaky clean image, things get hot and heavy in the new vid for Mylo Xyloto track "Charlie Brown." The soft rock anthem has the band rocking out in a small club with a bunch of glow-stick wavers, with Chris Martin pogoing into the frosh with an acoustic guitar in tow, but it's the cut scenes that supply the scandal. In it, a young, romantic, hoodied hooligan pulls off some rooftop acrobatics before smashing a car window to grab his ride for the night. He then picks up his girlfriend (Misfits star Antonia-Rose Laura Thomas), and they canoodle for a bit before heading out to the concert spot. Beneath the lasers, they party it up, and then every neon-paint-smeared patron starts making out. As exciting as it all seems, we can't help but notice we're always seated in the sexless 30-somethings section each time we catch the band in action. In fact, this vid is almost the exact opposite of an actual Coldplay concert.

The NJ Underground: Coldplay have let go the official music video for their new single "Charlie Brown". The track originally appears on the UK group's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which hit stores back in October via Parlophone Records. The Mat Whitecross-directed visual was filmed in London and seems to capitalize on the resurging rave culture. It's about those times when you stay out all night partying at a club that has an internationally known rock band performing in the middle of the dance floor, instead of just a DJ spinning records.
