John Gibson (Fox News) wrote this article following Chris Martin's outburst at shareholders, calling them the greatest evil on earth. Here is what Mr Gibson said in return:

A Rush of Blood to the Head?

Thursday, May 19, 2005

By John Gibson

This is a little monologue Thursday on how good it is to be rich. And maybe how good it is to be young, rich and famous.

Take the singer Chris Martin (search) from the pop music band Coldplay (search). He's also the husband of Gwyneth Paltrow — everybody's idea of perfect beauty these days — and the father of the baby Paltrow just gave birth to, the darling little Apple.

So Chris Martin and his band have a new record coming out, and he's getting pressure from the company to deliver the thing on time. And when it turned out to be late, the company's stock price went down. That caused even more screaming and more pressure on the gentle psyches of the otherwise pampered rock band.

So Chris Martin said — get this — "Shareholders are the greatest evil on Earth."

Now you youngish people who are pouring your salary into 401(k) (search) plans so you can take care of yourself in your old age, and depending on your status as a shareholder in stocks or mutual funds or bond funds or real estate investment trusts — your singing idol says you are the "greatest evil on Earth."

Think he's not serious? Sure, he is. He's talking about shareholders demanding profits from oil companies, from financial institutions, from wood products companies, from power companies. All of which he is certain, evidently, cause further damage to the planet where his little Apple is going to grow up.

Shareholders are bad because they want and demand profit, and they put pressure on managers and the managers go put pressure on the guy drilling for oil or the guy trying to make another rock 'n' roll hit.

Evil, evil, evil, evil shareholders. All of you — evil.

It's nice not to worry about your stock and mutual fund accounts, right? Your accountant calls every few days to say the record company has sent along another few million. Enjoy life. Don't feel the pressure of shareholders. Just enjoy life and tell all your fans who are shareholders that they are scum.

Oh sorry, not scum. Evil.

Coldplay's new record retails for about $20. Wanna give him some of your money now?

I didn't think so. That's My Word.

New Wallpapers Available

Coldplay dropped in on the tiny Harvey Theatre in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y., last night (May 16) to tape an episode of VH1's newly revived "Storytellers" show. The show will premiere June 8, the day after the North American release of Coldplay's highly anticipated third Capitol album, "X&Y."

After pounding through the rockers "Square One" and "Politik," the Chris Martin-led band settled into the "Storytellers" format. "It's quite strange to owe your entire life to four-and-a-half minutes of music, but I all think we do," he said before Coldplay's breakthrough hit, "Yellow," adding that the song was named after the book that happened to be nearest to him when we he was finishing writing it: the Yellow Pages.Bassist Guy Berryman admitted that new single "Speed of Sound" was written in an attempt to copy the drum sound in Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill," while guitarist Jon Buckland said he labored for more than a year trying to come up with a part to play in "Warning Sign." "I wound up playing maracas on the recording," he revealed with a laugh.

Drummer Will Champion confessed his own embarrassing moment when he said he initially thought the now ubiquitous "Clocks" was "absolute rubbish." Later, Martin owned up to being so frustrated during the recording of "In My Place" that in lieu of using a complete take, the band edited together different versions until achieving the desired sound.

Before closer "Fix You," Martin said the band had re-watched the Bee Gees' "Storytellers" appearance, and that in an attempt to emulate the group, would unleash a four-part vocal harmony. Said singing added gravitas to the anthemic track, which Martin called "probably the most important song we've ever written."

After the performance, which also included "The Scientist" and "Til Kingdom Come," the band stuck around to answer questions from the audience. Referencing the fact that Capitol parent EMI experienced a financial downturn when it announced "X&Y" would be pushed back from its early 2005 release, Martin said, "Deadlines mean nothing to us. We'll sink the whole company if we have to."

Asked what each member of Coldplay brings to the table, he answered, "For some reason this combination of four people just works. All these things combine to make us the 78th best band ever."

Coldplay will remain in New York for a show tonight at the Beacon Theatre, which will be cybercast by AOL Music.

Chris Martin's Tribute To Kylie

He has been a tireless campaigner against the trade rules that govern the lives of farmers in the Third World. He has also attacked the media, public schools and even poked fun at his wife's pregnancy.

Now Chris Martin, lead singer of the pop group Coldplay, has turned his anger on shareholders and profits. And his chosen target is EMI, the company that releases his records.

In a politically charged attack that has been welcomed by anti-globalisation campaigners, Martin said that he did not care that the corporation's profits might be dented by the delay in recording Coldplay's third album.

Speaking to the media in New York, Martin - who is married to the American actress Gwyneth Paltrow - said: "I don't really care about EMI. I'm not really concerned about that. I think shareholders are the greatest evil of this modern world."Martin said the album, the group's first in three years, was delayed because the group felt their first eight months of recording sessions had produced songs that lacked the "spark" of earlier hits such as "Yellow," "Clocks" and "The Scientist."

"It's very strange for us that we spent 18 months in the studio just trying to make songs that make us feel a certain way and then suddenly become part of this corporate machine."

On Monday, the band recorded for the cable channel VH1 and Martin told the audience: "Deadlines mean nothing to us. We'll sink the whole company [EMI] if we have to."

In February, the EMI share price fell after the company warned that its profits would be dented by the delay in releasing the album, now entitled X&Y and due for release on 7 June. Sales of the new album and revenue from the subsequent two-month tour of North America in the summer are expected to play a role in determining EMI's profits.

Martin's views will be seen by many as a logical extension of the work done by him and the group in support of Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign, which is aimed at helping farmers and crop growers in the Third World. Oxfam said it did not wish to comment on his remarks.

A spokesman for Globalise Resistance, one of the leading anti-globalisation groups, said: "His comments reflect the fact that everyone has to work for someone else; everyone is a slave to shareholders and he is being exploited just like everyone else. He will have created more money for EMI than they will ever have created for him in return." He said Coldplay fans should respond by downloading the band's music for free from unauthorised file-sharing websites.

While many recording artists will sympathise with Martin, few have been tempted to bite the hand that feeds them in such a public fashion. Steve Randall, guitarist with dance collective Faithless, told The Independent: "While I don't expect anyone to feel sympathy for pop stars tied to lucrative record deals, he has raised a very significant broader truth, which is that capitalism and the profit motive are not the best ways to organise the world."

EMI, the world's third-largest record company has issued a statement suggesting it is relaxed about his opinions: "We don't expect or want our rock stars to be stockbrokers."

The group was formed in 1998 and has become hugely popular in the US. Their first album, Parachutes, sold nearly 6 million albums, while their second, A Rush of Blood to the Head, sold more than 11 million.

Martin on...

* ...celebrity: "Fame isn't all it is cracked up to be. Everything is subservient to celebrity. Great things get ignored because they're not famous but people can tell you who's dating who."

* ...Third World poverty: "I'm a father who travels a lot and has seen how rich nations exploit poorer ones through crazy trade law and huge debt."

* ...Gwyneth Paltrow: "This is all very weird because she's a big Hollywood star and I'm just the bloke from Coldplay."

Coldplay's Twisted Logic 2005 Tour

Coldplay was at the top of their game for their performance at the HFStival at M&T Band Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday night.

After a long day of performances by groups including Good Charlotte, Billy Idol, Garbage, Social Distortion, New York Dolls, and Interpol they took the stage at about 9:45. Their set almost didn't happen at all when, after Billy Idol's set who played right before Coldplay, the administrators told everyone to leave because of severe weather warnings. It had been pouring rain for about and hour and there had been several lightening spottings but, after nearly another hour, the storm passed and the Boys from Britain took the stage.Chris Martin was his usual energetic self, crouching behind a speaker for the beginning of their opener Square One' and emerging as the song built. The song sounded amazing and the crowd loved it, despite the fact that Coldplay was the "one-of-these-bands-is-not-like-the-other" of the festival. The band, each dressed in black, Johnny in a truckers cap and Will with a large number 44 on shirt, then played 'Politik' to the delight of the crowd. The crowd sang along as best they could but Chris improvised the lyrics in the verse to include "give me festivals by HFS" and "give me Coldplay in the rain." In the piano outro Chris quoted, and briefly sang, Billy Idol's 'White Wedding' before ending the song.

Next, the lights went yellow and so did the band with Chris, instrumentless, jumping around stage and standing on speakers. The next song they played was the new song 'Low' which was incredible and features backup vocals from both Johnny and Guy. Chris played electric guitar for this somewhat uptempo, energetic piece.

Next was 'Clocks' and although it was done without the trademark green lasers it had never sounded better. Chris was rocking his stool back and forth and yelping into the microphone. He told the crowd to clap along saying, "I know we're foreign but give us a chance."

After the song he told the story of when they first played at the HFStival in 2001 (I think) where everyone apparently thought they were "the worst thing to ever happen to the festival" although that was surely just Chris being modest. He introduced the next song as 'Fix You' and told everyone that if they wanted to mosh they could take a break for awhile but if they wanted to kiss someone that now would be a good time. 'Fix You', with Chris using an organ sound on his piano, was perhaps the best song of the night. Lights and cell phones were held up from many of the 50,000 fans as Chris serenaded them. The song, an absolutely beautiful tune, built to the full band after an extended period of just Chris and his haunting vocals.

Chris announced the next song would be the last and Will began the familiar intro of 'In My Place'. Chris seemed to be having the time of his life, as he does everytime he performs, and ran into a security corridor which ran perpendicular to the stage. Fans reached out their hands to him and screamed as he ran to the end of it and back, laughing all the while. The song ended and the four took a bow as the crowd, still soaking wet, cheered and called for more.

Unfortunately, an encore was not in the works as the last band, Foo Fighters, had to play their set but Coldplay fans were just thankful that the severe rain had not stopped them from hearing an incredible set from one of the greatest bands in the world.

[thanks Ethan]

Chris Martin Hits Back At MTF Critics

Chris Martin has hit back at cynics who have criticised his political campaigning for Make Trade Fair - insisting everybody should be involved in politics.

He is proud he's used his megastar status to make a difference to the plight of poverty-stricken Third World countries. And he has defended his actions as well as those of fellow stars and charity ambassadors Bono and Sir Bob Geldof, because he's adamant music and politics go hand in hand.

He relayed this fuming message to dissenters: "I would say, first of all, don't be such a stupid cunt, because to say politics and music don't mix is to say that politics and gardening don't mix, or politics and plumbing. Politics concerns everybody."

Coldplay Pictures (Avalon)
