TORONTO - After spending 18-months holed up in London writing and recording a new album, Coldplay unleashed its newest torch songs to a ravenous Toronto audience on Wednesday playing a steamy and sweaty set.

The band, led by frontman Chris Martin, seemed thrilled to reveal the material to its ardent fans. For their part, devotees gobbled it up with fervour, hooting, hollering and clapping their way through the hour-a-half-long show which mixed equal parts new songs and old favourites. "Thanks for having us back. You're a wonderful country," gushed Martin, dressed all in black.Tried and true tracks from the band's 2002 album, A Rush of Blood To The Head, made up a large chunk of the show, part of a series of select gigs in North America to build buzz for the band's forthcoming CD, X&Y, out next month.

The crowd didn't seem to mind, blissfully singing along with The Scientist, In My Place, Clocks, Politik, Warning Sign and God Put A Smile Upon Your Face.

New songs - What If, Till Kingdom Come and the current radio hit Speed of Sound among them - were met with polite but eager applause.

Tickets for the sole Canadian stop at the waterfront's Kool Haus were snapped up in under one minute. Outside the venue, scalpers were commanding upwards of $200 a ticket. Some entrepreneurs snagged $500 each on EBay in the days leading up to Wednesday's concert.

The band has been in town all week promoting the upcoming disc.

On Monday, police were called in to disperse an excitable crowd of 1,500 that had blocked Yonge Street traffic outside a radio station where Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland were doing a short acoustic set.

For those unable to take part in this week's Coldplay fever, Martin told the crowd the foursome would be back in Canada in August.

As well, the concert was filmed by MuchMusic for a special on the band next month.

Coldplay's Chris Martin has been beating himself up for believing tabloid gossip about his fellow celebrities.

Since marrying skinny Gwyneth Paltrow Martin has been under the media spotlight and according to ContactMusic.com hates it when the papers invent stories about him and his family. He is often forced to control his anger when fans quiz him and about the crap they have read.

However, this does not stop him from reading the gossip columns and often flicks through a showbiz magazine. He has said: "If a celebrity magazine is in an airport lounge, I'll have a look. I like gossip as much as the next man. But then, I'll bump into someone I've read about and I'll say, 'Oh, I read so-and-so...' and I curse myself, because I hate people coming up to me and going, 'Chris I read that you're macrobiotic, is that true?' And I say, 'Well, no, not really.”

TORONTO (again) - It's an event many Toronto music lovers won't soon forget.

15-hundred people turned out for a performance by members of the band Coldplay yesterday, blocking off a portion of Yonge Street outside the studios of our brother station, 102.1 The Edge.

Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland were supposed to play two of their new songs, but delighted fans by playing a few more of their big hits.

Edge program director Alan Cross called the event "legendary." Cross says so many fans were gathered on Yonge Street, that the band’s S.U.V. had to be escorted down the street by four mounted police officers.

TORONTO - Coldplay's Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland were greeted by a screaming mob of fans Monday, the first day of a three-day promotional blitz in the city to talk up the band's new album, X&Y.

"I can't think of anything except how many people are standing behind me," said a beaming Martin when he was asked about making the new record during a stop at MuchMusic. "It was hard. Judging by the (screaming) it was worth it."

While X&Y won't hit stores until June 7, the British band is busy hyping the CD across North America by making surprise visits to radio stations and putting on a few select concerts in small clubs. Aside from MuchMusic, Martin and Buckland visited The Edge 102.1, a local rock radio station, where they performed acoustic versions of two new songs in front of a frenzied audience.Martin showed off his falsetto, previewing A Message and Till Kingdom Come, a song originally written for the late Johnny Cash which will appear as a hidden track on X&Y. "It's a tribute to him," Martin told the crowd. "A lot of our parents are real country and western heads." They also performed The Scientist from Rush Of Blood To The Head and Don't Panic from the band's first album Parachutes.

The outfit landed in Toronto on Sunday and will stay through Wednesday night, when they perform at the Kool Haus. The show sold out in less than a minute. Scalpers are commanding a whopping $300 for a ticket.

Rebecca Lain of Burlington, Ont., was one of about 250 fans outside MuchMusic hoping for a glimpse of Martin. "They're really good. I just really love them," gushed the 18-year-old, holding a disposable camera above her head hoping for a shot of Martin or Buckland. "He's really hot." She said she's been trying to snag one of the 2,300 concert tickets, but "$300 is just too much money."

Martin didn't reveal much about the new CD, saying only that the band threw out a bunch of songs during the recording process. "That's what always happens with us," he said. "We do something, we think it's brilliant, and then we play it for someone else and they remind us that it probably isn't brilliant. So we take it back in and we work on it."

The first single from the album, Speed of Sound, is quickly climbing rock radio charts. It broke ITunes records by topping the downloading service's worldwide chart on its first day of release.

According to u2log.com, fans at the first of four Chicago U2 gigs in May got an extra treat as many reported that Coldplay was among them in the ellipse.

Bono made an extra point of welcoming Coldplay and thanked them for being there. Edge had pulled out a piano as some of the crowd thought Chris may come out for a little ditty or two.

Hundreds of extra tickets for the Glastonbury music festival are to go on sale for Orange mobile users, it emerged today.

Orange customers will be able to buy one of these last remaining tickets through the Orange World homepage from 9.30am this Tuesday.

Previously, the 112,000 £125 festival tickets were snapped up in less than three hours in April by eager fans.Ticket sales were restricted to two per person and those turning up at the event, from June 24 to 26, will have to show photographic identification matching the names printed on their tickets.

Acts as diverse as Kylie Minogue, Van Morrison and Goldie Lookin’ Chain are will perform at this year’s Glastonbury.

The main Pyramid Stage includes the former Australian soap star, Belfast legend Morrison and Newport rappers Goldie Lookin’ Chain as well as New Order, White Stripes, Coldplay, The Killers, Doves, Elvis Costello, The Undertones and Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson.

The Zutons, The Coral, Ash, Kaiser Chiefs, Jools Holland and The Thrills are also on the Pyramid Stage at the festival in Pilton, Somerset, in June.

Lest anyone have any doubts, romance is still very much on the mind of Coldplay bandleader Chris Martin.

As the English quartet played a rare intimate club gig at Metro Friday night, Martin's wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, sat in the balcony, enthusiastically cheering her husband on. He frequently looked up at her -- especially during the hyper-romantic hit "Yellow" -- and she responded by lighting up like a schoolgirl, gazing back adoringly and leaning closer to him every time he turned her way.Ironically, despite a title that evokes the male and female chromosomes, the band's third album -- which arrives in stores on June 7 and is pegged by the music industry as the most important release of 2005 -- "X & Y" is the group's edgiest, most experimental and least love-song-oriented disc yet, as evidenced by the half-dozen new tunes that the band performed during its inspired 80-minute show in Chicago.

Coldplay shot to the level of arena headliners on the strength of an impressive string of unforgettably catchy mood-rock hits from its 2000 debut "Parachutes" and the 2002 follow-up, "A Rush of Blood to the Head." Eager to entertain and seemingly thrilled to be returning to live performance, the group deftly interspersed transcendent versions of those signature tunes--"Clocks," "Politik," "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" and "In My Place" -- with a generous sampling of its new material.

Paranoid about the music leaking on the Internet, the group's label has refused to send reviewers advance copies of "X & Y" -- even though the purpose of "surprise" club gigs like Metro is to start generating enthusiasm for the album -- and the venue's staff confiscated everyone's cell phones to prevent concertgoers from illicitly recording the new tunes as they were performed onstage.

This was also ironic, given that Coldplay chose to introduce its first single, "Speed of Sound," as a ringtone download.

That tune is already on its way to joining the list of the group's anthemic radio hits, but the live versions of other new numbers such as "Square One," "Low," "Fix You" and "What If?" found the band moving toward a more ethereal and atmospheric but still stadium-shaking sound, challenging itself as well as its audience.

If the band's earlier formula was a 50/50 split between U2 and Radiohead, it has now halved those ratios and added 25 percent Pink Floyd and 25 percent early '70s German art rock. (Before taking the stage, the group serenaded the capacity crowd with a recording of "Hallogallo" by the German band "Neu!," and Coldplay's new song "Low" shares a title with the best album of David Bowie and Brian Eno's "Berlin Trilogy.")

Whether or not these intriguing new sounds will produce the blockbuster the music biz is hoping for is anybody's guess, but the Metro show proved that the material will certainly translate in the arenas.

Guitarist Jonny Buckland created gorgeous waves of sound--thanks to his tastefully layered effects, he often seems to be playing lead, rhythm and a keyboard part all at once -- while Will Champion propelled the music with metronomic precision and dynamic fury, living up to what may be the coolest drummer's name in rock history.

Then, of course, there was Martin. He hunched over his black upright piano as if crushed by the weight of his emotions. He flirted with his female fans as he caressed his acoustic guitar. He did awkward but endearing twirls as he danced around Metro's cramped stage, and he dared to let his voice soar to a falsetto that could have been disastrous but which succeeded in taking his best songs to a whole other level.

It is easy to see what Gwyneth and so many others love.

Singer and campaigner Bob Geldof has denied reports he plans to stage a Live Aid gig to coincide with the UK hosting July's G8 summit of world leaders.

Geldof, who was at the Rose d'Or TV festival in Switzerland, said: "It is kite flying, that's all it is. It is just talk.

"Why would I possibly repeat something I did 20 years ago?" he told TV Plus.His spokeswoman confirmed discussions are taking place about holding shows to raise awareness about Africa. The gigs would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original 1985 Live Aid concert at Wembley.

Geldof's spokeswoman confirmed that the Live Aid Trust had been "discussing the plans to hold an event around the time of the G8 summit". She said plans could be finalised when members of the Live Aid Trust, including original organiser and musician Midge Ure and music promoter Harvey Goldsmith, meet later this week.

She added it was not yet known if they would be joined at the talks by Geldof. "I would expect we will know something definite this week, after the trustees have met," she said. "If the Princes Trust have already indicated that they are prepared to step aside, then it would appear people are keen to see this happen."

London radio station Capital FM has said any clash between its annual Party in the Park and Geldof's concerts would prompt them to scrap their plans for this year. Party in the Park is usually held in Hyde Park in support of The Princes Trust.

Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Princes Trust added Capital and The Prince's Trust were "delighted to support " any concerts organised by Geldof. Prime Minister Tony Blair will be joined by the leaders of the other G8 nations for the summit which is due to take place at the Perthshire resort of Gleneagles in the first week of July.

Geldof was the driving force behind last year's Band Aid 20 single, a reworking of the 1984 fundraising hit record, both of which were organised by Geldof. Band Aid II topped the charts last Christmas and raised £15m for charities in Africa.

At precisely 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9th, Julie Grayauskie, a social worker in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, called Ticketmaster on two phones and logged on to ticketmaster.com on her computer. She had seen Bruce Springsteen seventeen times on the Rising tour and desperately wanted a ticket to his May 19th show at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Forty-five minutes later, she gave up. "You get online right away, it tells you your wait time is less than a minute and it pops up right away: 'No tickets available,'" she says. "It sucks. I don't know how to put it -- I'm so angry."

Within minutes, fans from New Jersey to Colorado to Minnesota were echoing Grayauskie's outrage on Springsteen message boards. "Scalpers rot!" declared one. "I'm sick and tired of being penalized for not being a well-connected insider," said another. For hot tours like Springsteen, U2 and Nine Inch Nails -- and, soon, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones -- professional ticket brokers use a combination of manpower and technology to swoop in and commandeer hundreds of seats at a time. As of Monday afternoon, April 11th, ticketsnow.com was selling 292 seats to Springsteen's New Jersey show -- almost nine percent of the 3,300 seats that went on sale to the public -- with some going for as much as $2,565 apiece...Ticket scalping has been frustrating artists and fans for decades, and in the age of eBay, it's possible for anybody to buy and sell high-demand tickets for outrageous profits. But the bigger problem is that major ticket brokers have become far more nimble and sophisticated -- often using expensive software that enables them to get around ticketmaster.com's security and buy up large blocks of tickets before fans have the chance. "It's one of the worst aspects of capitalism," says Peter Harvey, attorney general of New Jersey, where selling tickets for fifty percent above face value is illegal. The state recently opened a $5 million anti-Internet-fraud crime lab with the FBI, and Harvey promises to use it to prosecute online scalpers.

Check out these prices: Nine Inch Nails on April 27th at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, with a face value of $35.50, now up to $407 at ticketliquidator.com; Audioslave on April 30th at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, originally $35, $177 at stubhub.com; and U2, whose tickets hit $1,500 apiece last month on eBay until the band recently lowered demand by adding more shows.

"It's hard," says Peter Paterno, attorney for Metallica, Pearl Jam and others. "You look at Metallica and Pearl Jam and Rancid -- they try to keep their ticket price really fair, but at the end of the day that just means scalpers line up and resell them. The ticket brokers are not stupid. They've gotten very efficient at what they do."

How do they do it? Just as brokers used to hire people to stand in line overnight at Tower Records to buy tickets for hot shows, now they hire dozens of people to log on to ticketmaster.com at the moment hot tickets go on sale. Some also incorporate more complicated high-tech techniques, like using computer "bots" to override ticketmaster.com's security by automatically plugging in the randomly selected "secret word" repeatedly and at high speeds. Hackers reportedly sell the software for $20,000 and say it allows a single broker to buy hundreds of tickets in minutes.

All this is technically legal in most of the U.S. "As long as there's supply and demand, there's going to be ticket brokering," says Gary Adler, general counsel for the National Association of Ticket Brokers in Washington, D.C. "And you'd much rather have it be done by legitimate businessmen than out of the trunk of somebody's car."

Some big-name artists are fighting back against the scalpers. For the best seats on Springsteen's Devils and Dust tour, promoters stipulated that buyers had to show up personally at Will Call in order to claim most tickets. Other artists, including Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band, allow fan-club members first shot at tickets. But that can backfire: Earlier this year, U2 tried to limit pre-sale tickets to members of its fan club, but scalpers simply joined the fan club to get some of the first seats.

Many artists have even contemplated raising ticket prices for top seats to compete with scalpers. "But then you appear to take advantage of your fans, and you don't want to," says Jim Guerinot, manager of Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt and others. "It's a can't-win situation."

Sir Bob Geldof has confirmed plans for a second Live Aid concert, which will take place on July 2nd.

The Sun claims that the concert will be called Live 8, as a reference to the G8 summit of world leaders in Scotland on July 6th.

Previous rumours suggested that Geldof is hoping to sign up acts such as U2, Coldplay, Madonna and Robbie Williams for the event.

A source told the newspaper, "Geldof has taken on one of the biggest projects of his life with this - but it's a brilliant idea. He's the only man who could pull it off, and it is the best way of forcing Bush, Blair and the heads of the world's most powerful countries to put their money where their mouths are."

"We didn't sit down and say, 'Let's write a stadium album,'" says Coldplay drummer Will Champion of his band's ambitious third CD, X&Y, due June 7th. "But we did gravitate toward that."

And even before Coldplay staged the new songs at this past weekend's Coachella Festival, their big-rock move was paying off: The single "Speed of Sound" hit Number One on iTunes' charts in fifteen countries a day after its April 19th release. Dave Alder, chief marketing officer for Virgin Megastores, says he expects X&Y to match or exceed the triple-platinum sales of 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head: "This is the first event release of 2005, and probably the most anticipated release of the year."Andrew Slater, president of Coldplay's label, Capitol Records, says the disc -- packed with dynamic drumming, fat stacks of layered keyboards, and singalong choruses -- "showcases the group at the peak of their powers."

But climbing to that peak took some work. "We went through so many different emotions and ideas," says singer Chris Martin. "We went down so many different paths." In fact, the foursome spent a year on initial recording sessions for X&Y -- only to ditch almost every note after they listened to the results. Recalls Champion, "We all went to a bar in Liverpool and said, 'We need to sort this out, because it's not right.' It sounded like four people playing different things and then chucking it into a computer to edit it and fix it."

So the band members retreated to a dingy rehearsal room in North London and reconnected. When they began recording again, they did so as a unit, playing live in the studio. "We learned how to be a band again, really," says Champion. "We got back that spark that we felt when we first joined a band together." They also absorbed new musical influences, biting the melody of Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" for the ethereal tune "Talk" (the German synth-rock pioneers granted permission after Martin wrote them a letter) and emulating New Order on the synth-splashed "Low."

The band is planning its most extensive world tour yet, which will hit arenas and amphitheaters in forty cities beginning in late summer. Says Champion, "We're basically hoping to make the best live show ever."

Coldplay, Wilco, Widespread Panic, Oasis, the Black Crowes, Jimmy Cliff, Death Cab For Cutie, the Allman Brothers Band and Franz Ferdinand lead the lineup for the fourth Austin City Limits Music Festival. The event will be held Sept. 23-25 in the city's Zilker Park.

More than 130 bands are confirmed for the festival's eight stages, including Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, the Arcade Fire, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Buddy Guy, Jet, Dierks Bentley, Gov't Mule, the Black Keys, Sleater-Kinney, Doves, Keane and Robert Earl Keen.Produced by Capital Sports & Entertainment, with talent booked by Charles Attal Presents, the ACL festival is named for the PBS mainstay "Austin City Limits," which is billed as the longest-running music show in the United States.

The festival began in 2002, and attendance grew to more than 70,000 per day in 2004. In response, producers announced this year they would reduce capacity by 10,000 daily to make for a better fan experience.

"To us it was simple. Our original model was to provide a good experience [for] bands and the customer, and to create an event that would be around for the city of Austin for many years to come," CSE principal Charlie Jones tells Billboard.com.

"Like any event or festival, when it gets too crowded, it's an unpleasurable experience," Jones continues. "Our customers told us last year it was too crowded and we heard them."

The capacity reduction will affect ticket prices, but three-day passes started out at $85 on April 15 and will still top out at $95 once the bands are announced.

"Our ticket sales are ahead of schedule," Jones says. "Before we released band one, we sold 12,000-13,000 three-day passes. I expect when the bands get released, this sucker will sell out within a week."

Last year, highlights from the 2003 festival were released on New West Records, and a Warner Bros. release from the 2004 fest is set for this summer.
