Coldplay have left it to the last minute to decide the final tracklisting of 'X&Y' - with the band unable to decide whether to include the song 'Talk' after struggling with its recording for months.

The song was one of the tracks NME heard last year while the band were in a London studio working on 'X&Y', released on June 6. The version NME heard borrowed the riff from Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love', building to a completely new song.

However, during the difficult recording sessions which have seen the band scrap huge amounts of material, the song was one of the ones that caused most difficulty – to the point that it was completely left of early versions of the record sent out to their British label. At one point it was being talked about as a potential comeback single. NME understands that now the group have found a mix they're happy with, but have been unable to decide what to do with it.

Chris Martin told NME.COM: “From that early version we went and did a whole other version of it. A whole other song. What happened with the song 'Talk' is that it was all going great and then someone said 'That should be the first single' and we all just freaked out and scrapped it all. I hate choosing singles, it's so hard. We've just mixed it and it sounds great. I think we've had such pain getting to that place, I’m not sure anyone quite knows what to do with it anymore. When we heard it mixed properly, it sounded mega."

Chris also told NME.COM that the title of the album is inspired by the extreme nature of his day-to-day life. He continued: "It's a cooler way of saying ying and yang. If I'd called it ying and yang we'd have been in trouble! 10% would walk away. But another 20% would come. We’d be a lot bigger in the Far East. My whole day is a mixture of optimism and pessimism in its most extreme forms. And that’s what 'X&Y' is to me. It's two sides. I like the fact they're very strong letters, very clear. Very hard lines, it looks great when you write it down. And it looks great when you see the artwork. It's fucking amazing. I can say that because I didn't do it."

Coldplay's next show is when they headline California's Coachella Festival. From there, they return to the UK in June for a Glastonbury headline slot on Saturday June 25, followed by a massive arena tour.

They are calling it "glum rock" - a glut of melancholic young pop stars whose music is providing the soundtrack to a downhearted generation, report The Independent.

At the centre of this sombre gathering can be found Coldplay - the inspiration, it is being claimed - for a new wave of bands determined to reverse Bing Crosby's homespun wisdom by accentuating the negative and eliminating the positive from pop music.

The thesis is being expounded in a vicious new parody by the comedian Mitch Benn in his series Crimes Against Music, which is being broadcast on Radio 4 this week.

In it he identifies four bands: Keane, Snow Patrol, Embrace and the Thirteen Senses, which he says are guilty of sounding uncannily similar to Coldplay. Others have added a fifth band to the list, Athlete, whose current hit "Wires" is about the singer's baby on a life-support system.In the new series, Benn laments: "Everything sounds like Coldplay now. No other sounds can be allowed ... Very restrained, not too much row ... This could be Embrace, Keane or Snow Patrol, Thirteen Senses sound like this as well I'm told..."

Benn's conjecture has prompted a flurry of debate in the pop music world where the miserablist tradition can be faithfully traced from Leonard Cohen to Morrissey and the Smiths, to such giants of modern-day gloom as Radiohead.

But according to the NME editor Conor McNicholas, imitation is the inevitable result of Coldplay's runaway commercial success.

"This always happens when you get a very successful band. A&R men will jump on the bandwagon - forgive the pun. The same thing happened post-Oasis," he said. But Coldplay, he believes, will still stay one step ahead of their sound-alike rivals. And while some of the bands - such as Snow Patrol and Athlete - have earned their place at pop's top table, others may be less deserving.

"The Thirteen Senses have never really broken through. They seemed like one Coldplay band too far," he said.

Coldplay's frontman, Chris Martin, is almost as famous for being married to the actress Gwyneth Paltrow as for his music. The band met at University College London in 1996, signing to EMI's Parlophone label in July 2000. Their debut album Parachutes reached number one in the UK, and by the end of the year it had gone platinum four times.

Heart 106.2 FM DJ Harriet Scott said Coldplay have helped return guitar music to the charts and that their new album is among "their finest work".

"The success of the recent South By South West music showcase in Texas only proves that the demand is bigger than ever for guitar-based music," she said. "It was in the wilderness for so long while dance was exploding in the Nineties that it's only natural to see a return."

For the record companies, she argues, it all boils down to the bottom line. "You only have to look at the huge fall in EMI's share price when they announced they wouldn't be able to finish their album this quarter to see how important a band like Coldplay are. It's natural to see a number of bands with the same sound being popular and successful as well. I'm all for it."

The music journalist and broadcaster Paul Sexton believes there is life after Coldplay.

"There was a point after Coldplay happened where it looked as if the New Solemnity would dominate A&R, but mercifully we seem to be over that. The current British wave sounds much more 'anything goes', especially in groups like The Go! Team and Do Me Bad Things," he said.

The Record of the Day publisher, Paul Scaife, believes the greater danger lies elsewhere. "I'm more worried about the endless crooners and pop-opera bands," he said.

The Huddersfield band Embrace sold half a million copies of their first album, The Good Will Out, in 1997, but then disappeared from view and were dropped by their record label. Noel Gallagher [pictured] has laid into Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for resurrecting Embrace's career by writing their latest smash hit 'Gravity'.

The 37-year-old says, "I don't know what the fuck he's doing writing songs for Embrace - but Chris can write a song."

Oasis new album 'Don't Believe The Truth' is released on 30th May, preceded by a single 'Lyla' on 16th May.

Feeder have spectacularly rubbished all comparisons made between themselves and the wave of mellow bands on the circuit such as Keane and Coldplay.

Speaking to Gigwise, drummer Mark Richardson said Feeder’s more restrained sound should not be pigeonholed with such bands.

Clearly a bit fazed, he said: "It's fucking shit to be honest. This band’s been around three times longer than Coldplay, and much longer than Keane, who don’t have guitars in their songs. Comparisons put you in a box, boxes which are restrictive. We’re Feeder, and we just do what we do."

He added: "We use piano on a couple of songs and it’s like 'oh fuck they’ve turned into Coldplay!' which is hilarious."

Chris Martin has been talking about the mysterious reasons behind the name of Coldplay’s upcoming new album ‘X&Y’ and how his band missed out on a huge money bonus from EMI for delivering it late.

Coldplay's new album, the follow-up to 2002’s 16 million selling ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’, will be entitled ‘X&Y’ and will be released by Parlophone Records on June 6. Frontman Chris Martin has revealed where the record’s name came from.

"X and Y is the mathematical formula used when you don't know the answer.” Martin explained to Insideonline, “But, it's also like black and white, or hope and despair, or optimism and pessimism. Everywhere you look there's a tension of opposites."

He went on to reveal thatthe delay in the record’s release (due to the band not being entirely satisfied with the tracks included) not only caused a dip in their record company EMI’s share price, but also meant that the band themselves missed out on a hefty bonus.

"Deadlines be damned,” he explained, “It was all to do with fiscal years and shareholders anyway. Once we forgot about the money we were free to push ourselves to the very limits and make the best album possible."

Chris Martin also confessed that he still often doubts his songwriting ability, something that caused problems when penning both ‘X&Y’ and its predecessor, which nearly spilt the band.

"I still spend at least 60 per cent of my time thinking 'I can't write songs.'” He explained, “I don't see myself as brilliantly talented, but lucky to have met the right combination of people who fit together like a jigsaw so you can't see our individual shortcomings."

‘X&Y’ will be preceded by the new single, 'Speed Of Sound' on May 23 both are out on Parlophone Records.

British rockers Coldplay benefitted from delaying the release of their highly anticipated third album because singer Chris Martin suddenly found inspiration for a stand-out song.

The In My Place frontman channelled the anger and frustration he felt after enduring fruitless recording sessions into penning what he believes is the strongest track on new album X+Y.

He says, "The one benefit of time is that we've had a chance to wait for proper songs to land. The last song that's on the album came out of a conversation I was having at home after we thought we'd finished. I explained that we were still missing that one song. I got really angry and aggressive and this song just came out in five minutes, and a week later it's all done."

X+Y was originally meant to be completed by Christmas 2004 in time for release this month (March 2005), but the band demanded more time from record label Emi because they were unhappy with the production on the original recordings.

Cert to open live shows. Heavy feel with lots of guitars and haunting

lyrics. Chris sings: "Is there anybody out there who is lost and lonely

too?"

2. WHAT IF

Best song on the album and one of the band's best ever. Chris's soft

voice and piano are in full force. When the anticipated guitar sound

kicks in, reminiscent of Yellow, the hair on my neck stood on end. A

Sergeant Pepper ending.

3. WHITE SHADOWS:

Gospel inspired with lots of organ and a very U2 sounding riff. Chris

was listening to reggae great Jimmy Cliff when he wrote this.

4. FIX YOU:

Church organ start reminded me of Procol Harum's 1967 great A Whiter

Shade of Pale. Cello and strings lead to an epic end to the five minute

track.

5. X&Y:

Heavily influenced by Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Strawberry

Fields from the Beatles. Starts with moving, soft vocals and strings.

6. SPEED OF SOUND:

The first single. The opening piano reminded me of Clocks. Drummer Will

shines and guitarist Jon adds riffs that Edge would be proud of. Very

catchy.

7. A MESSAGE:

Acoustic guitar and no doubt which Hollywood actress the songs's

message is meant for. Lyrics include the line: "I'm nothing without you, I'm

nothing on my own."

8. LOW:

Big, festival sound. Will be great live with Guy's thumping bass and

loud mix of guitars, synth and drums. Massive ending makes it

spine-tingling.

9. LET'S TALK:

Opens with a melody borrowed from Kraftwerk, though Coldplay do it with

guitars, not synths. For me, this is one of the album's highlights.

It's got No1 single written all over it. Vocal reminded me of The Killers.

10. SWALLOWED IN THE SEA:

This could easily be a massive single with its haunting lyrics,

apparently about the loss of a loved one. Chris's vocals are accompanied by a

cello before the rest of the band kick in for a rousing finish. A

touching, beautiful song.

11. TWISTED LOGIC:

A sampe of Coldplay when they are angry. The lyrics are about what

might happen to the world in the future if we don't look after our planet -

or the people that live on it.

NME, What have you learnt from these two gigs in L.A.?

Chris "We've still got so much work to do. I need a day off and we haven't even started.We're still trying to finish the album. There's always things to be done."

NME, Did you enjoy the shows then?

Chris Martin, "I've got a throat infection. Its bad enough to piss me off, but not bad enough to cancel anything."

NME, How did you decide which new songs you were going to play?

Chris Martin, " The last two gigs for me have been slightly like a bad dream Half way through something I think that it shouldn't be happening like this. But we've got to do it. Being in Coldplay and coming back now is very different to what it was three years ago. There's a lot more eyes on us so you don't feel like you have any time to sort things out properly."

NME, But your happy with the new songs?

Chris Martin, Iknow there are some good songs on there... I remember feeling like this on the last record, terrified. You know you've got the songs but live is a different thing because you have to put it all together. Tonight felt like ten different songs, just played, but at the end of the last tour it was a wholw journey. I know when we play Square One its going to be amazing eventually."

NME, Why did you cover Maps?

Chris Martin, "I'd really like to do it properly. It's just so beautiful. It reminds me of driving around South America with Jonny (Buckland). We went on a quick holiday together. Listened to that album and U2's Zooropa, got very depressed and started making music."

Keane star Tim Rice-Oxley was left envious of Coldplay's global success - because he almost formed a band with their frontman Chris Martin.

Keyboardist Rice-Oxley nearly joined Coldplay before the idea was ultimately binned. He then watched as Martin's band shot to the top of the charts around the world. But the release of Keane's debut album 'Hopes And Fears' last year has set the London-based trio on a similar course.

Rice-Oxley says, "Chris Martin and I were friends, and we were both in just-starting-up bands. They were toying with the idea of getting a keyboard player and he asked me, but the idea was junked. It was a two-edged sword watching Coldplay have all this success. We all felt envious. But it's worked out well for both of us."

Coldplay have made a sensational live return by playing a secret show in Los Angeles.

The band are scheduled to play at the Universal Amphitheatre this weekend for US radio station KCRW but played a warm up gig last night (11th March) at the nearby Troubadour nightclub - which holds in the region of 400 people.

It was the first time members of the public have been able to hear songs from the group's forthcoming album “X&Y”, which is due for release in June.

During the 60 minute set, the band played four new songs, including opener “Square One”, “White Shadows”, and piano ballad “What If”.

They also played a host of their biggest chart hits including “In My Place” and “Clocks”, ending with a crowd singalong of “Yellow”.

At the start of the gig the band looked nervous, but by second song “In My Place” all four members were grinning at each other and looked glad to be back.

Singer Chris Martin said: "Well, here we are once again. We can't quite believe we're back and playing a concert, and that some of you waited since about February."

Martin was referring to the fact that although tickets for the gig were made available at 5pm from the venue on the day, the news leaked, meaning some fans were at the venue, waiting outside in the California sunshine from 8.30am to ensure their place.

The show comes as the band ease themselves into playing again after a recording break of about 18 months. Last week the group did an open rehearsal for 40 friends and fans, and are also planning a top secret club gig in the UK in June to precede their massive arena dates.

Coldplay star Chris Martin has jokingly revealed he plans to dress up like Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins for the band's forthcoming tour dates.

The singer clams he wants to climb into a slinky cat-suit and ride a stuffed tiger, just like the flamboyant rocker, when he finally steps out on stage again this summer.

He said: "I'm thinking of donning a skin-tight cat-suit and riding on a white tiger, but take it one better."However, despite his bold claims Martin - whose marriage to Hollywood beauty Gwyneth Paltrow is allegedly on the rocks - admits he is worried everybody hates his band because they have been away so long.

The group have announced a series of UK stadium shows in June and July, but the 'Yellow' singer admits he is worried no-one will come because they have found new bands they like.

He confessed during an interview with Britain's Radio One : "I think we've been away for so long now and the only public feedback we get is tabloid gossip, which is generally vitriolic. So at this point we feel so unpopular and so out of the loop.

"So to me it seems surreal that we're going to play concerts again because I haven't met anyone who likes us for two years.

Quite where these people are going to come from, I'm not sure. But I hope they're out there somewhere."
