Coldplay to perform at MusiCares Person of the Year tribute, LA in honour of Paul McCartney (10th February)

Coldplay, Tony Bennett, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, Katy Perry, James Taylor, and Neil Young among artists added to performance lineup for GRAMMY Week MusiCares Person of the Year tribute, honouring Sir Paul McCartney, it has been confirmed via the official GRAMMYs twitter account.

The impressive star-studded cast will come together to honor 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year honoree Paul McCartney during a sold-out gala on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles, two days prior to the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards. The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week. Proceeds from the dinner and concert will provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

The GRAMMYs website continued: "Hosted by actor/comedian Eddie Izzard, artists set to perform are current GRAMMY nominees Tony Bennett, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, and Katy Perry; GRAMMY-winning artists Duane Eddy, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, James Taylor, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse; two-time Latin GRAMMY-winning artist Sergio Mendes; and the cast of Cirque du Soleil's "Love" Beatles tribute show. The evening will also feature a special performance by McCartney.

Past MusiCares Person of the Year honorees include: Bennett, Bono, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins, David Crosby, Neil Diamond, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Sting, Barbra Streisand, Taylor, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, and Young. The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards will take place live on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network from 8–11:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Mylo Xyloto now available to stream on Spotify three months after its release

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto has snuck on to Spotify after shunning the streaming music sphere since its release in October last year, writes MusicWeek today. It appears that (at the time of writing) MX has not appeared on rival streaming music services such as Deezer and rara.com, nor has any official statement been made from the band or Spotify itself. The album lands only days after the back catalogue of Bob Dylan – another streaming stay-away – was made available to Spotify users. Continuing the news, TheNextWeb website wrote: "Back in October, we pondered whether Coldplay’s decision to say no to streaming was a good or bad thing for the UK band. Whatever the right answer may be, the band’s latest album has finally appeared on the music-streaming platform. As Music Ally reports, Mylo Xyloto went live on Spotify some time this morning, though no official announcement has been made yet.

As we reported a few months back, a source at Coldplay’s record label, EMI, said that the company was “a little embarrassed” by the band’s decision to not release its album on Spotify and other music-streaming sites. It’s thought that Coldplay has been trying to keep its Mylo Xyloto album, which was launched last October, intact and playable in its entirety, rather than breaking the tracks up for separate listening. Though as we noted at the time, once you purchase an album on any service, physical or digital, you can listen to the songs in any order and as standalone tracks.

Whilst Coldplay’s back catalog has always been available on Spotify, it seems the intention was always to delay the new album’s launch on the streaming platform, to help maximize sales elsewhere – including on Apple’s iTunes Store. Indeed, the album was heavily promoted on iTunes when it was launched. Coldplay’s manager Dave Holmes has argued that the album would’ve sold far less copies if it had been available on Spotify from the start, though he has previously indicated that it would eventually make it on to streaming sites.

Also reporting on Spotify today were the Sydney Morning Herald, who wrote that Spotify is the most successful music subscription service in the world, and is growing fast, but there is a question over whether this surge can continue. It has 3 million paying users – up from 1 million in March last year, and is the market leader in a fast-growing sector. But it is beset by criticism. Spotify is clearly still trying to convert users from the free, ad-supported model to paying for the service. More than 20 per cent of its active users pay for the service and, helped by that, Spotify has paid $US150 million ($142 million) in royalties to music labels and publishers.

However, the problem is that $150 million is not a lot when divided up between all the recording artists on its service. A number of smaller, independent artists have also criticised Spotify for its perceived low payouts. Mercury prize-nominated Jon Hopkins caused a stir in November, for example, with a tweet claiming he had been paid just £8 ($12) for 90,000 plays of his songs on Spotify.

The company is fighting back. Ken Parks, its chief content officer, says there is "not a molecule of evidence that there is any cannibalistic effect" on iTunes sales. In fact, he suggests that the album holdouts are harmful. "They are punishing the people they need to embrace: the 18- to 24-year-olds, who were previously paying very little or nothing at all."

Nevertheless, the danger for Spotify is that more high-profile artists will look at the sales of the albums that were not available to stream last year – Adele's 21, in particular – and see cause and effect: they sold so well because they were not on Spotify. A domino effect of album holdouts would hamper the company's drive to sign up more paying subscribers this year and beyond.

Spotify's new apps platform may help. Inspired by Facebook, it enables developers to create applications that live within Spotify's own desktop software, building new features on top of its streaming music catalogue. Mr Parks believes artists will start launching their own Spotify apps this year. Spotify also sees its close partnership with Facebook as important. Users who link their Spotify and Facebook accounts are three times more likely to become paying subscribers – and the company suggests that artists who keep their albums off Spotify are missing out on the viral buzz. Coldplay to play two intimate Sydney shows in February, streamed live via Facebook

Coldplay are expected to announce an Australian tour for late 2012 during a quick visit to Sydney this month, that is according to the Adelaide Now... website earlier today. They are indicating that Coldplay will head to Sydney directly after performing at the Grammys on February 12th, where they will play intimate shows for 2DAY FM and Sunrise during their two-day visit on February 16th and 17th, which is being sponsored by Huawei Mobile.

Coldplay played at Splendour In The Grass six months ago on the eve of finishing their record Mylo Xyloto, which went platinum in Australia after selling 70,000 copies. Coldplay will be hoping the tour gives Paradise [artwork pictured] the push it needs to make it to the top of the charts, which would give Coldplay their first No.1 single in Australia. Chris Martin has joked he is jealous his wife Gwyneth Paltrow beat Coldplay to that feat - with her Huey Lewis duet Cruisin' reaching No.1 here in 2000.

Meanwhile, speaking of chart news, Ed Sheeran has taken the top spot in the Official UK Album Chart at the expense of Coldplay last weekend. The singer's debut album '+' is just ahead of Coldplay's 'Mylo Xyloto', which is up one place to Number Two. Adele, who topped the chart last week, is down two places to Number Three, with Bruno Mars at Number Four and Rizzle Kicks at Number Five, according to the Official Charts Company.

Coldplay will tour Australia in 2012, according to promotors

In breaking news, according to the Music Feeds Aus website, it has been revealed that Coldplay will be touring Australia later this year on the back of their latest album Mylo Xyloto.

Promoter Michael Gudinski let news of the upcoming tour slip when speaking with Triple M Melbourne’s Eddie McGuire. Eddie revealed the information on his Hot Breakfast show this morning: "I was sitting next to (promoter) Michael Gudinski last night and he said Coldplay are coming out later this year."

Coldplay were last in Australia for the Splendour In The Grass Festival in July 2011, the band flew over for a one-off show. Alongside Coldplay the festival featured the likes of Pulp, Kanye West, Jane’s Addiction and The Hives. Guy Berryman told the Brisbane's Courier Mail last year: "It's not really the sort of place you'd come to for a day, but we'll be back at some point in 2012 to do a proper tour."

Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto just '60 copies away' from regaining #1 spot in the UK album charts

Coldplay are battling with the UK’s leading solo artist (Adele) to top the UK artist albums chart this weekend with just several dozen sales separating the two artists. Adele's latest album 21 remains in the lead in pursuit of a 21st week at number one, but Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto was trailing it by only around 60 sales up to the end of trading on Thursday, according to Official Charts Company figures.

Little more than 1,100 sales further behind is Atlantic act Ed Sheeran’s + in third position, while Elektra/Atlantic’s Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans is fourth in the week to date. Rhino’s Chris Isaak rounds off the top five with a new entry at five with Beyond The Sun, which is set to become the American’s highest-charting album in the UK since Wicked Game in 1991.

Global Talent/Polydor act Cover Drive’s newly-issued Twilight is comprehensively in charge of the singles market, being around 18,000 sales ahead up to the end of business on Thursday of closest challenger Titanium by Positiva/Virgin’s David Guetta featuring Sia. The Island/Lava Jessie J single Domino, which topped the chart for a second week last Sunday, is now third.

Coldplay to play Secret Policeman's Ball, Radio City Music Hall, NY on March 4th (for Amnesty International)

Coldplay, John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Mumford & Sons and Russell Brand are among the acts who have signed on for the event at Radio City Music Hall on March 4. The concert will benefit Amnesty International, as it has since it started back in 1976 with celebrities like John Cleese. Over the years, Bono, Sting and others have participated. This will mark the first time it's being held in New York City. Amnesty International spokesman Andy Hackman says the organization wanted to do something really special for its 50th anniversary. "The Secret Policeman's Ball is letting America in on the party: The British-based music and comedy festival is coming to New York City in March," writes the Wall Street Journal, who have just published online a short press release on the event.

Since John Cleese and friends brought together a star-studded mix of comedians and rock stars for The Secret Policeman’s Ball in 1976, the legendary Amnesty International show has championed the right to free speech for people across the world. The New York event - the first Secret Policeman's Ball to be held outside the UK - will help spread Amnesty International’s message to an even bigger audience.

"The Secret Policeman’s Ball is a reinforcement of the fundamental rights we’re all entitled to as citizens of the world," said Andy Hackman, of Amnesty International. "It’s an honour that so many luminaries have agreed to join us and celebrate the right to life, liberty, security and freedom of opinion and expression."

"We are so happy to be involved with the 2012 Secret Policeman's Ball," said Chris Martin. "We have followed and supported Amnesty International - and the amazing work they do around the world in the field of human rights - for years, and it is a pleasure to be asked to contribute to such an inspiring event."

Tickets for the event will be sold via Ticketmaster, with an American Express customer pre-sale running from today until 29 January, and the general sale beginning on 30 January. Lately he's been being a jerk and not a really good friend. The tickets are under my name and they check i.d's. Well I have to say that if you buy something for someone as a gift it'd normally be bad form to renege on it. Paradise does represent different thing to different people but you can't re-write its dictionary definition. You're right in some ways as a place of extreme beauty, delight or happiness may not always be achievable. The first meaning of paradise I encountered was at church when at primary school. Heaven was commonly referred to as paradise - I suppose it fits - though these days that's the last thing I would think of when thinking of my own paradise. The Maldives is the closest I came to feeling I was in a real paradise but then I also visited a local island where locals lived and it was anything but in comparison. It opened to my eyes to how man-made and false paradise can be too.

Blimey Sharon they've only just got going on the MX campaign so it's not likely they'd be heading back in the studio so soon. January always starts gently with family time and holidays before getting back to work. Work for the guys is all encompassing with promo, rehearsals and preparing for the upcoming tour. There will always be writing going on regardless of the schedule but no new recordings to be released at this early stage.

I replied: "Ah yes, it's a mystery as to why that tag doesn't take you to a bona fide Oracle entry. As you haven't told me where you are travelling back to, I cannot help much. Personally given how many people in large crowds are trying to get home after stadium shows (or matches), I wouldn't advise anyone to rely on a train to get you home without sacrificing the end of the show to ensure you get on the tube and make your train on time. It's up to you but I'd imagine the show would be finished by 11pm.

Coldplay news round-up: Professor Green, Kelly Clarkson covers Fix You, Jimmy Kimmel Live taping

British rapper Professor Green [pictured below] has found a mentor in our very own Chris Martin after he opened up to the Coldplay frontman about his dad's suicide during a moving chat, that's according to The Sun this week. Professor Green endured a tough childhood, and lost his father as a teenager when he took his own life. He recently enjoyed a meal with Chris, who quizzed him about his upbringing, and Professor Green reveals he vowed to be a shoulder to cry on if he ever found himself feeling down.

He told The Sun, "Chris is clearly a brilliant mind. He took us out to dinner when we were on tour with their band and I really enjoyed having a good chinwag (talk) with him. He's very inquisitive. We went for dinner and he was asking me questions about growing up. Somehow we got on to the subject of my dad and obviously, with him having committed suicide, it all got quite dark. But instead of switching subjects we ended up talking more. It resulted in him saying, 'Well, if ever you are thinking about committing suicide, just phone me and we'll go for a pizza and just talk'."

Kelly Clarkson has covered Coldplay's Fix You during a concert in Albany, NY on 17th January. You can watch the performance at the Coldplay forum now. On the cover, Idolator wrote: "Just like Taylor Swift did on her Speak Now tour, Kelly Clarkson is incorporating different covers in each one of her stops as she travels the country on her Stronger tour. Though Swift’s picks were decided upon the city she was in, Kelly is leaving it up to her fans. And her fans have good taste: while in Albany, New York, Clarkson delivered a wonderful cover of Coldplay’s weepy “Fix You”, and a few days prior at Foxwoods in Connecticut, she put her spin on Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” and Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”."

Finally, Coldplay are recording an mini-concert outdoor taping for Jimmy Kimmel Live on 7th February, a day before their charity appearance at Club Nokia (iHeartRadio) on 8th February. The tickets for Jimmy Kimmel went on sale a few days ago but were apparently sold-out within one hour. The promotion for this event has been low key (we didn't know about it until tickets were gone), but you can read and preview more on this new show is at the Coldplay Live forum now. Coldplay and Rihanna to duet on Princess of China performance at Grammys 2012

Coldplay and Rihanna will duet at this year's Grammy Awards, it has been revealed today via several news sources, and the initial source - Rihanna's twitter account.

Rihanna confirmed the news over Twitter that she will join Coldplay to perform their collaborative track 'Princess Of China'. She wrote: "My friends @ColdPlay and I will be sharing the stage for a performance at this years Annual Grammy Awards!" Then she added, "WE reached 2BILLION views on @youtube !!! THANK U!!! I'm in a great mood, and I got some GREAT NEWS!!! PRINCESS OF CHINA #GRAMMYS2012."

It has been reported that that the pair may also perform together at next month's BRIT Awards. The 54th Grammy Awards take place on Sunday, February 12th at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Coldplay could be set to headline a show at Slane castle later this year, it has been reported. The band are reportedly in talks with organisers over an 80,000 capacity show for the summer.

Coldplay tops list of 2011's highest-selling rock performers in UK (Paradise, ETIAW and Mylo Xyloto all feature)

Coldplay have been named the country's highest-selling rock act of the last 12 months, according to statistics released by The Official Charts Company today.

Coldplay's chart-topping track Paradise was the most popular guitar anthem of 2011 and was the best-selling rock song last year after it sold more than 410,000 copies, according to the Official Charts Company. Coldplay boasted two songs in the top five rock singles of 2011, with aforementioned Paradise at number one and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall at number four.

Coldplay also claimed the best-selling rock album in the UK for 2011 after their fifth studio LP Mylo Xyloto scored sales of more than 908,000, despite only being released in October. Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher was placed at the second place in the album rundown with his debut solo offering Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, ahead of Florence and The Machine's Ceremonials and Foo Fighters' Wasting Light at three and four respectively. The Mumford and Sons' hit album Sigh No More rounded off the first five.

The Top 10 selling rock singles of 2011 were as follows:

Clear Channel Media, Entertainment Los Angeles and the official site have announced that Coldplay will perform live at a special iHeartRadio Benefit Concert on Wednesday, February. 8th 2012 at Club Nokia at L.A. LIVE. Coldplay's attendance at this show has immediately sparked rumours that they will be at the Grammy's (and possibly performing) just four days later on February 12th also in LA. Proceeds from the iHeartRadio show will benefit A Place Called Home and Youth Mentoring Connection, two Los Angeles based youth charities. The iHeartRadio benefit concert will be presented by Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Los Angeles radio stations KIIS FM, 98-7fm and MYFM.

Coldplay, the seven time Grammy award winning group, is known for their activism and international charity work. The group released their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, in October 2011 and also performed at the inaugural iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. Tickets will go on sale to KIIS FM, 98-7fm and MYFM listener loyalty club members on Thursday, Jan. 19,at 10 a.m. PST and to the public on Friday, Jan. 20,at 10 a.m. PST on ticketmaster.com. iHeartRadio will partner with A Place Called Home and Youth Mentoring Connection to raise money for the two Los Angeles based charities. A Place Called Home provides a safe haven in South Central Los Angeles for underserved youth. They provide programs in education, arts and well-being to empower youth to take ownership of the quality and direction of their lives. Youth Mentoring Connection matches at-risk youth with caring adult mentors to help them awaken to their power, unique gifts and purpose. The structured group dynamic provides the resources youth need to reach productive, conscious adulthood.

Coldplay early favourites at Brit Awards 2012, NRJ Music Awards voting, Paradise for Grammy nominees album

Coldplay and Adele have been named as early favourites to nab the major awards at this year's Brit Awards by bookmakers. Coldplay are favourites to win Best British group at 1/2, just behind are Kasabian, who are 4/1, then Chase & Status and Elbow who are both 7/1 and Arctic Monkeys, who are ranked at 8/1 to win. You can vote for Coldplay at the Brits website now!

Meanwhile, Adele is the overwhelming favourite to win the award for Best Award for her monstrously successful second album '21', with William Hill giving her odds of 2/7 to take home the award. The 'Someone Like You' star's odds are far ahead of the other contenders, which are Florence & The Machine at 5/1, Coldplay, who are 7/1 to win for Mylo Xyloto, Mercury winner PJ Harvey, who has been given odds of 10/1 and Ed Sheeran, who is rated at 12/1 to win with his debut record '+'.

Coldplay have also been pre-nominated in the International Group / Duo of the Year category at this year's NRJ Music Awards, due to take place on January 28th in Cannes, France. In this category, Coldplay will be up against Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta feat. Usher and LMFAO. Each category at these awards had six pre-nominees which were whittled down to four for the awards voting. To vote for Coldplay in their category click here now.

Also looking ahead to the Grammy Awards, where Coldplay have already been nominated three times, it has been announced that they will also be featured on the forthcoming 2012 Grammy nominees album. Coldplay will contribute the track Paradise to the compilation, which also features tracks by fellow Grammy nominees Katy Perry ("Firework"), Adele ("Rolling In the Deep"), Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks"), Mumford and Sons ("The Cave"), Maroon 5 ("Moves Like Jagger" Featuring Christina Aguilera), and Foo Fighters ("Walk").

The album will be released on Universal Republic on January 24, with a portion of sales benefitting the Grammy Foundation and MusicCares Foundation. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday 12 February. (Mylo Xyloto was not eligible for any awards, as it was released after the cut-off date of 30 September 2011.) Coldplay's nominations are as follows:

- Best Rock Performance (for Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall)

Awards news: Coldplay nominated (and will perform) at Brit Awards 2012, and double wins at European Festival Awards

Coldplay – for Mylo Xyloto - have been nominated in the Best British Album category alongside Adele, Florence & The Machine, PJ Harvey for Let England Shake and Ed Sheeran for +, at this year's Brit Awards 2012, to be held in London on 21st February. Coldplay are also among the bands nominated for Best British Group and are up against the likes of Elbow, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian in the best band category.

It has also been confirmed via the official Brit Awards twitter account that Coldplay will be performing at the awards. Rihanna will also be performing - but organisers are tight lipped as to whether there will be a duet for Princess Of China. Meanwhile, Coldplay were handed two awards at the European Festival Awards yesterday, including the marquee gong for Best Headliner. Coldplay, whose 2011 festival season included another headline spot at Glastonbury, also picked up Festival Anthem Of The Year for their track ‘Viva la Vida‘. Elsewhere, Hungary’s Sziget Festival, which was treated to performances last year from the likes of Prince, Kasabian, Interpol and Pulp, was named Best Major European Festival, while Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Back to the Brit Awards 2012, Rihanna has admitted that she'd love to duet with Coldplay on Princess Of China at this year's BRIT Awards, that is according to The Sun, giving us the best indication that the duet is still not yet confirmed despite reports to the contrary from the same source. Rihanna, who collaborated with Coldplay on Princess Of China as featured on the latest album 'Mylo Xyloto, revealed that she is just waiting for Coldplay to ask her to perform with them. Speaking to The Sun, Rihanna said: "I think Chris Martin is a special guy. His songwriting is just beautiful and I am a huge fan. If they want me to sing with Coldplay, I will be waiting for the call. I'd love to perform with them."

Back in early December Coldplay and Rihanna were rumoured to be teaming up to perform Princess Of China together live at the Brit Awards 2012. The reports last month said: Brit organisers are keen to get both acts on stage to perform the track, which is taken from Coldplay's latest album Mylo Xyloto, live together for the first time. A source told The Sun: "Coldplay are really looking forward to performing Princess Of China with Rihanna already. Brits bosses set their sights on getting them on stage together early doors. They are two of the biggest acts around right now."

Coldplay in talks to headline Slane 2012 according to Irish reports

Coldplay want to headline Slane this year, the Irish Daily Mirror are writing today. Coldplay are reported to be in talks with organisers over an 80,000 capacity show at the famous music Mecca. The Mirror continued:

Coldplay stole the show at last summer's Oxegen festival when they thrilled fans with a dynamic performance of their biggest hits. Now the stars want to join the elite cast of big names who have headlined the event over the years.

A Slane insider revealed last night: "Coldplay would be mammoth - they are the hottest ticket in music right now. Talks are underway but as is always with Slane, you can't be sure until it's officially announced. One thing that is certain is Coldplay would be big box office. Everyone's still talking about their performances at Oxegen and Glastonbury last year."

The group have made a huge impact with their latest album, Mylo Xyloto, and tickets to their world tour sold out in record time when they were released last September. Over the years a Slane headline slot has become the ultimate accolade, with acts including U2, Queen, Robbie Williams and The Rolling Stones selling out the venue. As always Slane supremo Lord Henry Mountcharles was keeping his cards close to his chest last night. Asked about the Coldplay coup he said: "I have absolutely nothing to say about that at the minute." But music industry sources say Chris Martin and the band have made the show their No1 priority for this summer. A insider added: "They are playing loads of gigs but Slane would be the ultimate. Chris Martin hasn't stopped going on about the Irish crowd since Oxegen. He really believes 80,000 fans at one of the world's most iconic live venues would be their finest hour."

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto is back in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 US albums again after a four-week absence as it climbs 12-8, despite sales dropping 48% to 44,000, according to MusicWeek this week. In what amounts to a New Year clear-out with seasonal records either plummeting down the chart or disappearing altogether plus only a handful of new entries, a number of albums released in 2011, including Mylo Xyloto, take advantage by reclimbing.

Meanwhile in the UK singles charts, Coldplay have been ousted from their position at the top of the charts by rapper Flo Rida and his new single Good Feeling. Paradise, track three from Coldplay's latest album Mylo Xyloto, went to number one at the start of the year, fending off competition from the Christmas number one, Wherever You Are by Military Wives.

Coldplay had originally bagged the first number one of 2012, but will now have to make do with second place as the Get Low rapper has stormed into pole position. Flo Rida and Coldplay are both trailed by UK R 'n' B artist Taio Cruz, who comes in at number three with his new release Troublemaker, while X Factor runner-up Olly Murs, previously at number two, is now in sixth place with Dance With Me Tonight.

In tour news, Coldplay's 'Mylo Xylototour' had the best debut of all the new tours this month, finishing at No. 2, that is according to MarketWatch a couple of days ago. Coldplay will embark on the 31-date North American tour in April to support their 2011 album of the same name. In addition to Coldplay, tickets to the Red Hot Chili Peppers (No. 4), Neil Diamond (No. 5) and the joint tour from Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw (No. 6) all went on sale during December, catapulting each to the top of the rankings. A while ago after Mylo Xyloto was released, New York Times (Blogs) featured an article on Coldplay, entitled I Like the New Coldplay. Sue Me.. We were expecting something from NYTimes to be anything but positive. While there's little news going on in the world of Coldplay at the moment... we saved it for now...

I mentioned to the magazine’s editor that the new Coldplay record was pretty good. He told me to leave his office. Actually, first he said, “Oh, I’m gonna tweet this.” Then he kicked me out. Coldplay has assumed the mantle (passed down from Hootie and the Blowfish, Dave Matthews Band, and guys like that) of Relatively Pleasant Pop Band That Inspires Reactionary Hatred. Sixteen million people bought that Hootie record, and I never met a single person who admitted to owning it. I don’t know how Coldplay earned the enmity of the cool people. But I know it’s real. Coldplay — worse than cold weather? Worse, even, than cold sores?

I say no. Coldplay is not worse than cold sores. But before you dismiss me as just another middle-aged, upper-middle-class tool who wears $125 jeans with a blazer, let me present my credentials: I saw the Clash on the ‘‘Combat Rock’’ tour in a college gymnasium, leaned on the stage right in front of Joe Strummer as sweat dripped off his face during ‘‘Straight to Hell’’; own original pressings of “This Charming Man,” “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” the Hib-Tone “Radio Free Europe”; I have the vinyl of every Niagara record on German import. I was cool. You must believe me.

But I think the end of the Coldplay hatred might be in sight. Maybe you remember a time when Madonna was the scourge of the culture. Despite the fact that “Holiday” and “Into the Groove” were irresistible, the cool kids weren’t having it. It was only through some weird confluence of Sonic Youth patronage and postfeminist studies that Madonna could be appreciated ironically. We were “dancing” to “Madonna” at a “club” — get it?

Now — and here’s Coldplay’s big problem — there is no ironic way into this band. These guys have been the definition of earnestness since their inception. But it hit me while listening to ‘‘Mylo Xyloto’’ — at the behest, I’ll admit, of a very hip and earnest 12-year-old — it’s just pop! It’s just a pop record with melodies and hooks and only one truly bad song. I couldn’t be less interested in the concept that supposedly unifies the album — a Nazi resistance movement somehow related to Bronx graffiti taggers, or something? And the lyrics are banal pop-album boilerplate.

But a song like “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” sounds just fantastic, and for a super-catchy pop song, it’s pretty unorthodox: no snare drum till three minutes in! I mean, it’s no “Frankie Teardrop,” but if you’re looking for permission to like Coldplay, go ahead. Brian Eno produced it, you know.

Rihanna 'waiting for the Coldplay call' to duet at the Brits 2012 (plus Paradise and Abu Dhabi news)

Rihanna has admitted that she'd love to duet with Coldplay on Princess Of China at this year's BRIT Awards, that is according to The Sun, giving us the best indication that the duet is still not yet confirmed despite reports to the contrary from the same source. Meanwhile in other news, more background to the rise to #1 of Paradise in UK's singles charts comes from Music Week today. They wrote: Topping the chart for the first time on its 10th appearance, Paradise is Coldplay's second number one, following 2008's Viva La Vida. The track - which has moved 14-17-20-13-11-12-7-2-5-1 thus far - sold 108,390 copies last week, raising its overall sales to 528,159, the later tally including 118,547 copies sold when it was not eligible for the chart, having been used as an inducement for fans to pre-order parent album Mylo Xyloto.

While the album is still a little short of becoming Coldplay's fifth million seller, Paradise is very much on course to become their biggest selling single, with only the aforementioned Viva La Vida (603,652 sales) ahead of it. Had Paradise been eligible for the chart since its release, it would currently be on its 16th chart appearance, and would have shattered the record for most weeks in the Top 40 before reaching number one, a record held by Celine Dion's Think Twice which was on its 13th week in the Top 40 (and its 16th in the Top 75) when it reached number one in 1995.

In the Middle East, a lack of public transport at Coldplay's New Year's Eve concert in Abu Dhabi meant some fans had to walk almost three hours to find taxis when the event ended just after midnight, according to The National. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) said that such problems would be avoided at future events. Both the Abu Dhabi Police Department and TransAD were not available for comment.

Shuttle buses and taxi drop-off points will help ease traffic to the venue during the rest of the two-week stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race, however, ADTA said. "The Coldplay concert aside, we are confident that the transport options in place - taxi, the park-and-ride complimentary shuttle bus from the Corniche and the amount of parking available around the Destination Village vicinity - will be sufficient to handle the level of traffic coming to the village," an ADTA representative said in a statement.

The Volvo Ocean Race Destination Village opened on Saturday. Additional taxis were on hand and shuttle buses were provided from the Corniche car park adjacent to the Hilton to the concert site, but it was not enough for the estimated 25,000 attending. "We walked the streets for almost three hours and no one would pick anyone up," said Michelle Leboutte, who had travelled from Ras Al Khaimah with her husband for the concert. "We finally got a taxi after 2.30, and then we realised our hotel was a minute away and we'd walked all the way from the Breakwater to our hotel."

Coldplay's Paradise tops the UK Singles Chart in its 10th week of release

Coldplay’s Paradise has displaced the Military Wives and Gareth Malone’s Wherever You Are to become the first official UK Number 1 single of 2012, BBC Radio 1 and the Official Charts Company can reveal.

Originally released on October 30, ‘Paradise’ debuted at Number 14 before steadily climbing up the Official Singles Chart and peaking at Number 2 a week before Christmas. Paradise is only Coldplay’s second Number 1 single, their first being ‘Viva La Vida’, which reached Number 1 in the Official Singles Chart in 2008. ‘Paradise’ reaching the summit of the Official Singles Chart is a double cause for celebration for the London-based band because, not only has it become the first Official Number 1 of the new year, it has also earned frontman Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion their first Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award - to mark the 60th anniversary of the UK’s Official Singles Chart, every artist who reaches the top of the Official Singles Chart will be presented with an Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award. The award is a partnership between the Official Charts Company and BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show - which is broadcast from 4pm to 7pm every Sunday afternoon and hosted by Reggie Yates.

Austin City Limits Taping: preview of Coldplay New Year's Eve airing in the US

While Coldplay perform in Abu Dhabi on New Year's Eve there will be another show many Coldplayers will be looking forward to on the same day - the airing of the Austin City Limits Taping in the US. By the time the playback starts on PBS, Coldplay's entourage in the Middle East will already be waking up to their first breakfast of 2012. Below is the preview as written on the ACLTV website. We're not aware of any live streams yet of the show but keep an eye on the Multimedia forum for updates on recordings, where you can also download the preview and a full version of Paradise from the show now (discussion is also at the Coldplay forum too...)

ACLTV continued: When we recorded Coldplay for their second episode of Austin City Limits, we knew we had a special show on our hands. So we decided to expand our usual 60-minute show into a 90-minute special to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and we‘re thrilled to share the entire show – airing this December 31st at 11 p.m. – with the world. That’s right – the entire show, with no songs cut. There were a few nips and tucks in editing, of course, as there always are. But every song on the setlist is included, from the quintessential hits “Viva La Vida,” “Clocks” and “Yellow” to new classics “Paradise,” “Charlie Brown” and “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” And since this is a New Year’s Eve celebration, you’ll want to stick around until midnight for the traditional NYE countdown. (Not that you’ll want to change channels before then. Or afterward, for that matter.)

Paradise on track to become Coldplay's second UK no.1 chart single (and the UK's first of 2012)

Coldplay's second single from the Mylo Xyloto album, Paradise, is currently sitting top of the midweek singles chart in the UK and is only days away from being the first UK no.1 single of 2012, according to reports tonight. Coldplay's last no.1 UK single was coincidentally the second single from the last album, the title track Viva la Vida, back on 22nd June 2008.

The Official Charts Company have released confirmation that Coldplay are currently at no.1 with Paradise, and are just ahead of Olly Murs, who is currently at no.2 with his single 'Dance With Me Tonight'. Last week's chart topper Military Wives are at no.3 with 'Wherever You Are', while Flo Rida and X Factor winners Little Mix are set to be at no.4 and no.5 respectively.

The Military Wives Choir may have held the No. 1 Christmas single but Coldplay has knocked them out of the top spot mid-week, and Paradise, which was originally released back in September previously peaked on the Official Singles Chart at Number 2, is currently in the lead.

Chris Martin was forced to boot out an intruder who broke into the grounds of his house – to serenade passers-by with a few Coldplay songs, that is according to The Mirror today. How reliable the news story is, is anyone's guess.

They wrote: Chris says: "I had a guy the other day who climbed over the gate of our house and started singing Coldplay songs to his friends on the street." As you do. The 34-year-old let him murder three or four of the band’s hits before intervening with the words: "Listen, you’re just not doing that right. He politely left. It was bordering on intrusion. Still, it’s nice that people like the songs." Very true, Chris. But for future reference, people, it would be better if you liked Coldplay’s hits in your own home than in Chris Martin’s garden.

Kelly Clarkson can’t say the name of Coldplay’s new album, but she loves it, writes Canada's National Post today. Clarkson’s favourite record of 2011 is Mylo Xyloto, and she was quoted as saying: "Coldplay’s album, the Xylo Mylo. I don’t know how to say it. I call it Xylo Moto. I’m like, I don’t know what the hell it is, but I love that album, it’s such a great cardio album. That ‘Teardrops’ song [Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall], Paradise is awesome. … [Chris Martin has] got some great cardio songs."

Coldplaying will have loads of previews to Coldplay's New Year's Eve concert in Abu Dhabi over the next few days, but for now here's one interview with Jonny Buckland [pictured] written by The National based in the United Arab Emirates today, entitled, 'Jonny Buckland: Coldplay likes to make people feel good'...

It's not only the UAE that remembers Coldplay's 2009 performance at the Emirates Palace hotel. The guitarist Jonny Buckland says the group still holds vivid memories of the rain-soaked show, which was punctuated by a thunderstorm that short-circuited some of the stage lights. While the band took it all in good spirit - they even broke into impromptu renditions of Singing in the Rain and Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head - Buckland says his onstage grin masked some serious concerns. "I remember the Abu Dhabi show very strongly," he remarks drily. "It was scarily rainy and there was lightning. I could feel the metal in my belt pack - on stage you wear one - and I could feel it rumbling as the static was going off it."

Despite the unexpected fireworks from above the stage, Buckland describes the group's two-day stay in Abu Dhabi as "a wonderful time", in which they spent their downtime sampling the opulence of the Emirates Palace hotel. "It was just simply unbelievable. I never stayed anywhere like that and probably never will again," he says. "It made Buckingham Palace look like a two-bed semi."

While their last UAE show was at the tail end of their wildly successful Viva la Vida world tour, this time they return at the beginning of a new global jaunt performing songs from their number one-selling fifth album, Mylo Xyloto. With a bunch of American and European shows under its belt, Buckland says the band is satisfied with the performances thus far - although there is always room to fine-tune certain parts.

"We are always tweaking the show, even today we're discussing what the songs will look like," he says. "But of course, this time the songs are very different, there are more new ones but there are also some old ones that we're going back to."

Buckland is speaking from Belgium during the first leg of their European tour, which saw them revive the old Coldplay classics Shiver and Daylight (from the albums Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head respectively) among a healthy smattering from Mylo Xyloto. The group also retained the two-stage set up from its previous tour, with a small "B Stage" placed deep in the auditorium where the group would play a handful of songs for the benefit of those sitting in the back-rows.

Buckland says that while each tour retains its own vibe, the deeper changes had been among the band's members, who must now juggle their careers with raising families. "As we go along, we enjoy ourselves even more. The older you get, you realise how lucky you are," he says. "We all have kids now, so everything is more arranged … It's not the same as back when we were 22, when we would be on a tour bus for four months."

While the shows are now bigger and the group is travelling and staying in more plush surroundings, Buckland is proud the group has never lost the euphoric element of their live shows. Making people happy is something Coldplay takes seriously, he says. "We want people to go away from our gigs feeling good. Because sometimes it's quite an effort coming to a show with all that traffic and queuing up, we just want people to feel like it's worth it."

The Abu Dhabi show also marks the second time Coldplay is performing on New Year's Eve after closing off 2010 in Las Vegas. Buckland hints that a Coldplay New Year's Eve show could become a regular feature, with the setlist reflecting the celebratory nature of the evening. With Coldplay set for a fully fledged American and European tour in April, Buckland says he will be going straight back to the UK to spend time with his family, as opposed to prolonging his visit to Abu Dhabi.

However, he wouldn't discount the possibility of frontman Chris Martin's spending some time in the capital, given his love of the beach and watersports. "Chris loves surfing but I am a bit of landlover myself," he says. "Actually, to be honest, the ocean kind of terrifies me."

News round-up: Coldplay 'Best Rock Band' of 2011, Moncton festival date, Apple iTunes giveaway

Coldplay have been voted the 'Best Rock Band' of 2011 in Digital Spy's end of year poll. The continued, saying that Coldplay beat runners-up Foo Fighters by a considerable margin on the tally, in which over 100,000 votes were cast. Leicester rockers Kasabian took third place. Elsewhere on the poll, Bruno Mars won 'Best Male Artist', ahead of Ed Sheeran and Will Young, who took spots two and three respectively.

The Wanted were named 'Best Pop Group' of the year, beating One Direction at two and The Saturdays at three. X Factor winners Little Mix took fifth position, below JLS and above Take That. Coldplay released their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto in October this year. It topped the charts in over 11 countries and has already been certified platinum in the UK.

Digital Spy also commented that Chris Martin recently claimed that he felt the group was hated by the world, adding: "Some people misconstrue our band just to be a commercial venture. They question the soulfulness of Coldplay because we've done okay."

Coldplay may be coming to Moncton in July, that is according to Canadian newspaper the Chronicle Herald this week. They said online that 'Atlantic Canada Rocks' reported on Friday that Coldplay is slated be at Magnetic Hill on 21st July, 2012 as part of a two-day music festival. "The source indicates that a deal is ‘nearly final," the website says. Not only that, Atlantic Canada Rocks reported that Coldplay will be announcing more North American dates in January or February, according to its sources.

Apple has kicked off its annual 12 Days of iTunes giveaway on Monday 26th December with a free Coldplay album for UK iTunes users. The album, featuring three tracks and three videos, is available for nothing from iTunes. The set was from the iTunes festival and Coldplay entertaining the crowd at the London-based event. It's certainly more useful than a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

As the name suggests, this is the first of 12 offers in the coming days, with some exciting content up for grabs. The Coldplay 12 Days of Christmas content is available now from iTunes, and will no doubt be a welcome boon for people cradling their new iPads and iPhones and sending their thanks to a very generous Santa. You'll have to be quick though – we're already 9 hours into the offer and it will be gone at midnight when Day 2's offer will replace it. We're betting it won't be Two Turtle Doves...

Er, no, we're not. Those costumes weren't bespoke by the way, they were hired from a regular fancy dress hire firm and that's why you will sometimes see other people at concerts wearing the exact same ones.

Q. Yesterday I was witnessing my most impressive concert in lifetime (being 44 years old and going to live venues quite regularly) at Festhalle/Frankfurt. As a matter of fact, we didn't receive the magic wristband which is quite a shame because I would love to have a memorabilia. Is there any chance to receive it officially and not just via ebay?

I'm afraid you can see the problem I would have here if I said "yeah no problem, I can send you one". Firstly, there aren't any spare to send out to individuals and secondly, that may encourage people who weren't actually at a gig to ask me for a wristband ... not that I would dare to accuse anyone of lying in such a way bit hey, you never know! Don't waste your money on one from ebay either, it's not like it does ANYTHING at all once you get it home. [although there may be some with a mind of their own...]

Q. Does Coldplay have to go through the strict border crossing security things? If so, do they get tired of it?

The Oracle replies:

No matter whether the band travel on a private chartered plane or a commercial flight they go through the exact same passport control and security measure as the rest of us. I say "us" but having with the band I can vouch for this plus also share a story of a flight back from Paris a few years ago. It was Jonny's birthday and the band had been presented with several gifts that were sent to their dressing room after the plane's hold luggage had already been through security. We queued up taking off belts, shoes and all fluids in clear plastic bags etc. and we had a bottle of champagne for Jonny but it was taken off us as we went through the hand luggage checks. Ours was the only - and last - flight about to depart but it didn't matter who, what. where. why or when, that bottle was confiscated just as it would have been if it was anyone else.I was tempted to open it and drink it there and then. I was gutted.

The C stage - now dubbed the X stage given its shape - is pretty much a permanent fixture these days so yes, I'd say it's pretty certain they will continue to have an acoustic set at the end of the runway to get closer to the crowd and have that more intimate moment.

There's not a lot going on in January to be honest, it's the perfect time for a post Christmas / New Year break. It's been a busy year and 2012 shows no signs of being a slower one. Things will start to kick in before April but it's a case of checking the website as usual for details.

Hi Caitlin, yes the band really did enjoy their appearance on the X Factor. They are fans of the show but it took a long time to decide whether to play. Judging by the performance, it seems they very much made the right decision. It was magical to behold!

Q. Just got home from the club and I heard what I thought was a Coldplay song. Did Coldplay cover any Rhianna songs recently? Possible it was just the house mix. Thanks, the one who knows everything!

Coldplay did cover a Rihanna song recently but that was for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and was an acoustic version of We Found Love so it won't have been that - unless it's an unofficial remixed version that we know nothing about. What you probably heard was a bootleg (that means totally unofficial) mix.

It was possibly Princess of China which is a Coldplay song on their new album, Mylo Xyloto, featuring Rihanna on vocals. Without knowing though, it could have been any of their songs and hers in some kind of mash-up as those do the rounds also.

Q. Dear Oracle, My 10-month-old son listens to Coldplay since the Glastonbury performance, which I taped. Since then, he got familiar to seeing Chris' face on TV and I easily calm him down and put him to sleep to Coldplay songs. My guess is that Viva La Vida and Us Against the World are his favourites. So, here's my question: Wouldn't it be really awesome if the band recorded a baby version of their hit songs? Like, instrumental or acoustic versions of Yellow, Shiver, Fix You and ETIAW? That's not going to happen. Or rather, the band won't be doing it but someone else already has! I've been aware of companies like this for a while now and while I am not intending to direct traffic to their site for to buy you understand, I did once buy my Great Niece a copy of a Rock Baby CD.

Q. Hi Oracle, I was just wondering will there ever be a Life is For Living extended studio version (like the live one)?

That ending came after the Parachutes recording session but has been tagged on live since way back in 2002. Incidentally the live version is available as a recording because not only was there a special edition DVD with a live CD of Coldplay Live 2003, the CD became available for purchase separately some time after.

Chris Martin interview with The Sun as Mylo Xyloto is chosen as the paper's no.1 album of the year

The Sun Newspaper's Friday Entertainment Section, alternatively known as Something For The Weekend, or TheSunSFTW, as seen on Twitter, has published an article interview with Chris Martin following news that they have chosen Mylo Xyloto as SFTW's no.1 album of the year. Read on for the article, entitled 'I don't know who bribed you but we're very grateful'...

The unusually titled Mylo Xyloto – the fifth album from music giants Coldplay – was the sound of a band with a new confidence. And it's rightfully Something For The Weekend's number one album of 2011. "We're SFTW album of the year — that's fucking incredible. Come on!" shouts Chris Martin down the phone, en route to a show in Paris. "I don't know who bribed you and I can't believe we beat Adele. But it's definitely not because of our album title because no one can still pronounce it!" he laughs.

(For the record, it is pronounced My-low Zy-letoe). Anyone who saw Coldplay on tour this year, whether headlining Glastonbury in June or on The X Factor last week, knows the band are at their peak live. "I think the success of this album comes from a group of friends who are very tight at the moment," explains Chris. "The moment we had to play Glastonbury it was a boot up the backside because that's the closest we get to a home crowd. We worked extra hard knowing we had to headline it...

"If you're lucky enough to play arenas, sometimes you relax too much. But with Glastonbury it's playing to people who you haven't played to before so there's new energy which seeps into your own show. We love it there and we always will. It has been a fantastic year for us with Mylo."

SFTW joined the band in Cape Town in October to witness the power of Mylo Xyloto's songs live. The chimes of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, to the singalong anthem Paradise and new single Charlie Brown saw the 50,000 crowd at Cape Town Stadium go wild. It was Coldplay's most pop album to date, influenced by the music the band — Chris, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion — all listen to. "We took off all our shackles and constraints," Chris, 34, tells us. "It's not great we wind people up. Maybe it's our Englishness that meant it took us a while to be comfortable with that. We had to think, we're not playing for people who don't like us — we're playing for the people who like us. Our main producers, Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, are strong-minded, hardcore individuals and they're on our side. They said it had to be a passionate album and reflect what we listen to. It didn't have to fit the indie or pop box. It just had to be true. So Mylo reflects that we do listen to a lot of Rihanna, Lady GaGa and Jay-Z as much as we listen to Arcade Fire and Nick Drake."

With Chris and his film star wife Gwyneth Paltrow being close to Jay-Z and Beyonce, did this influence Coldplay's new sound? "I've always listened to pop," he replies. "And I've been hanging out with Jay-Z for a lot more albums than this one. Mylo gave us a sense of freedom because on our last album we got sued and had so many crazy things thrown at us. It spoilt things for us a bit. Every album is a challenge. We're only making music but we know it irritates a lot of people, who really hate what we do. This was the first time we just accepted it. It galvanised us and gave us a sense of 'Well, f*** it'. Now we don't care what anyone thinks.'"

Last week the band did a special Radio 2 gig to just 500 people at Dingwalls, the London venue they performed at in 1998 as an unsigned student band. More than 60,000 fans applied for tickets for the special one-off show, presented by DJ Jo Whiley. Chris says: "I'm glad the crowd enjoyed it as, to be honest, we were fucking awful. We played there 13 years ago and as I stepped on stage my brain regressed to that day. I remembered we were shit the first time as well. We are a very tall band and that venue is designed for bands of lesser height. But it did bring back memories. Though we don't want to go back to 1998 because it was all bad clothes and dentistry."

Playing Sunday's X Factor final at Wembley was a more enjoyable experience, although the band have been unsure about appearing on the show in the past. Chris says: "We were watching The X Factor a lot and thought, 'We'd love to do it', so we finally said yes. We were very nervous because it's such an unknown territory. But it was one of the most fun TV shows we've ever done. Though we could only do it once all of us agreed."

Chris is looking forward to spending Christmas with his family, especially children daughter Apple, seven, and son Moses, five. He won't be seeing the rest of the band in their break. He says: "We're best friends who never hang out with each other except for ten hours a day when working."

So what do you buy each other at Christmas? Chris replies: "I'm the worst at buying presents. I simply don't know what kind of Lego they want."

One highlight the band must be looking forward to is performing Princess Of China with Rihanna at next year's Brits. However Chris jokes: "It's been discussed but no one has said 'yes' or 'no' yet as we need to look at diaries etc. Tell you what, if you think we should do it, then we'll try and do it?"

He adds: "I think it's getting older and wanting to soak it all up while it's happening rather than thinking ahead. The only thing I am sure of is I won't be swearing as much next year. My swearing has been terrible recently. I'm sorry to everyone. But we're all very happy. It's been a great year for Coldplay and we just hope it continues. "And being your number one album is a plus. We are very grateful."

Coldplay round-up: Mylo Xyloto sees X Factor impact, Charlie Brown video shoot insight

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto is enjoying its greatest demand at retail since it debuted at number one in the UK in October with the band's X Factor appearance last weekend lifting week-on-week sales by 132%, according to the MusicWeek website.

MX currently stands as the week’s third top artist album of the week having sold 86,808 units up to the end of business on Wednesday, according to Official Charts Company Data. That is more copies than in any entire week since the album debuted at number one seven weeks ago with 208,343 sales. The band’s first ever X Factor performance is also significantly boosting their fortunes in the singles market with Paradise, which was seven on last Sunday’s chart, the week so far’s second best seller after more than doubling its sales from a week ago. Only one other Coldplay single, their 2008 chart-topper Viva La Vida, has peaked higher in the UK.

Further to the chart updates, Coldplay's management have admitted that they had reservations over the band's decision to perform on The X Factor, that is according to NME who essentially have regurgitated one of Roadie #42's latest blogs. The NME wrote:

The group's official Roadie 42 blog, which is updated by one of their roadies, has revealed there were fears Chris Martin and co's appearance could have alienated their fans. The roadie wrote: "There has been a lot of discussion over whether this was a good idea - not least within the Coldplay camp itself. I remember first hearing that it was a possibility. 'Man, you're handing haters some pretty huge bullets there,' was my first thought."

He continued: "The downsides are obvious. It now becomes effortless for the cool kids to lay out their case against the band. For some, The X Factor is the devil. It is regularly painted as the source of all evil in the current music industry. Indeed, as an angry young man back in my own student days, I'd have ranted at length against it."

The roadie also said that it "struck me that in many ways, fucking up tonight could be more of a big deal than if Glastonbury had gone wrong". His comments come despite the band's frontman Chris Martin praising The X Factor and saying the band were "very grateful" for the chance to appear on the show. Coldplay will play a massive UK tour next summer, playing a total of seven shows at football stadiums, including three nights at Arsenal FC's Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, on the Charlie Brown video shoot: Coldplay will have seen more boobs than Hugh Hefner by the end of this week, write The Sun, who have more news on the Charlie Brown video shoot from earlier in the week. They continue:

The band came up with a winning idea for the video for their next single, Charlie Brown — a warehouse party featuring a load of topless girls. Management placed an advert offering to pay extras £100 for the job — with an extra 100 quid for any girls willing to whip their shirts off and jiggle about. A further £100 was also laid on the table for anyone up for getting sprayed. Although it didn't specify what with. The advert also asked for an army of "edgy Hoxtonian types aged from 18 to 35". The video took three days to shoot in south west London — that's a lot of boobs.

A source said: "There was a huge response. "Of course there would be, it's Coldplay. The venue it took place in was a little chilly but, on the whole, everyone was well looked after. It was a long one though, starting from 9am to just before midnight over three days. The video is going to look brilliant once it's finished."

The band — Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion — are on to a winner with this one as many bands have tried the topless-girls-in-video trick before. Duran Duran did it in the Eighties, Madonna in the Nineties and Lady Gaga is doing it now, even when she's not shooting a video. Chris's mate Jay-Z is also a fan. Just don't do a Skepta. Porn is one step too far.

More Coldplay concert dates for 2012 added across Europe/North America - easy thread finder updated

Second nights on Coldplay's tour in North America in 2012 have been added at Vancouver, Dallas, Philadelphia, DC, Boston, San Jose, Toronto, Montreal and East Rutherford. This is in addition to the official site has confirmed. This is in addition to the two dates which were added to the European leg of Coldplay's summer 2012 tour, taking the band to Spain and Poland, as confirmed on Thursday. The full list of UK/European/North American tour discussion threads is after the jump. Here is the latest information released by Anchorman:

Nine extra dates have now been added to Coldplay's North American tour - all of which are second nights at existing venues: Vancouver on 21 April, San Jose on 28 April, Dallas on 23 June, Philadelphia on 6 July, Washington DC on 9 July, Toronto on 24 July, Montreal on 27 July, Boston on 30 July and East Rutherford on 4 August. See below for the full updated list of shows.

The AMEX pre-sale for the San Jose, Toronto, Montreal and East Rutherford shows began at 10am (local time) Friday from here. The general sales for all the confirmed shows except LA and Chicago begin Saturday at 10am (local time) from 1-800-745-3000, Ticketmaster and LiveNation.
