The Mirror says the Coldplay frontman replaced his voice with a recording of Apple gurgling. An insider said: "He waited for ages so he could get the perfect little gurgle and she sounded so cute. He was so bowled over with his daughter he wanted the world to know."

However the answerphone message had to revert to his voice when he left for America last weekend to work on the new Coldplay album.

According to the official Embrace website "Martin originally wrote the song for Coldplay but as it developed it became clear to him that the song might be better suited to Embrace. As he explains, "We've always loved Embrace and Danny is one of my best friends. When we wrote Gravity we thought it sounded far too much like them for us, but not too much like them for them, so I asked Danny if he wanted the song and that was that".

Embrace frontman Danny McNamara calls the song 'the best song he never wrote". "There was no out and out love song, something there'd always been in the past" he says at embrace.co.uk, "You could say there was a Gravity shaped hole waiting to be filled".

The yet to be titled album is still being finished off under the production of Youth and is expected to be released in September.

Charles, who went blind aged six, kept a largely low profile during a recent bout of ill health - but still managed to collaborate with other musicians.

Charles is considered a pioneer of soul music with hits including Georgia on My Mind, which Coldplay briefly covered in Atlanta on the 2002 tour of America.He died of acute liver disease, which was diagnosed after he underwent hip replacement surgery. Soul diva Aretha Franklin described him as "a fabulous man" who introduced the world to "secular soul singing".

The 12-time Grammy winner played his 10,000th concert on 23 May 2003 in Los Angeles. More recently, he had been working on a CD of duets with performers such as Elton John, Norah Jones and Johnny Mathis.

Born Ray Charles Robinson in Albany in the south-eastern state of Georgia on 23 September 1930, Charles went on to become one of America's most enduring musicians.

After the blood disease glaucoma left him blind as a child, Charles was sent to a school for the deaf and blind in Florida, where he developed a lifelong talent and passion for music.

The young pianist later made his way to the north-western city of Seattle where he first performed as a solo act, modelling himself on the late musical legend Nat "King" Cole. He was a master of many styles, dabbling in country, jazz, big band and blues.

Battling childhood poverty and adult drug addiction, his intense renditions of classic songs earned him the nickname The Genius. His last public appearance was alongside Clint Eastwood on 30 April in LA.

The city has designated the singer's studios, built 40 years ago in the centre of the town, an historic landmark. Charles died in his Beverley Hills home of complications of liver disease, according to his publicist, Jerry Digney.

"It's devastating," Mr Digney told the AFP news agency. "He's been ailing for while now and it started out with a hip situation and went from there to other things, primarily the liver."

Family members and his manager were present when he died. Tributes have been pouring in from those who knew the man and his music.

"People remember the big hits and the visual image of him, but they forget what an innovator he was in the 1950s as a jazz musician," said country music singer Marty Stuart. Fellow country music legend, Willie Nelson, said, "I lost one of my friends and I will miss him a lot."

The biggest-selling download of the year to date is Coldplay's '2,000 Miles', just ahead of OutKast's 'Hey Ya!'. The half-a-million barrier was broken just a week after the UK launch of Napster, whose sales are not included in the figures.The British Phonographic Industry's (BPI) figures also reveal that the cassette single has died as a format.

In the first quarter of 2003, £418,000 worth of cassette singles were sold - but there were no shipments in the first three months of this year. The lack of shipments "effectively marked the demise of the format", said the BPI.

But the UK music industry will be buoyed by the growth in legal downloads. That market was practically non-existent this time last year. BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said: "With 500,000 legal downloads sold already this year, we have hit yet another milestone in the development of this exciting new market for music.

"This is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for the music industry."

The first quarter of 2004 also saw a 47.8% rise in the sales of vinyl 7-inch singles. But CD single sales dropped by almost a third on the same period last year, while CD album sales were down almost 3%.

The BPI said the small decline in CD album sales would "come as a relief in an industry which has seen double digit declines in some major markets".

Album sales account for more than 90% of the UK industry's revenue. The total value of the UK music industry fell 4.3% in the first three months of 2004 compared with the same period last year.

But figures for the full 12 months to March show CD album sales rose 3.8% compared with the previous year, while the overall value of the market grew 3%.

"The fact that album sales continue to show such resilience is a good start to what many had predicted would be a tough year for music," said the BPI in its quarterly review.

Before a meeting in Dublin yesterday for the EU, Bono told reporters "At this point there are no plans for a Live Aid 2".

Coldplay were tipped to play if the plans went ahead.The Sun ran an article over the weekend stating both Geldof and Bono would be involved in a 20th Anniversary performance of Live Aid but Bono suggests it wouldn't go anywhere near solving the problems of Africa. "Right now we're after billions, not millions (needed). A Live Aid 2 would help, but it wouldn't fix the problem."

Geldof also denied the story in an official statement saying "I told the Sun this afternoon it was not true. This only serves to undermine the concerted efforts of those concerned with the tragedy of poverty in Africa."

The newspaper claimed Radiohead, Coldplay and Oasis would take part in the show but we now know that is not going to happen.

The proceeds from Live Aid 2 would go to reducing the international debt of developing nations. Bono, 44, is a long-time advocate for the cancellation of third world debt.U2 took part in the original 1985 Live Aid extravaganza, which was the brainchild of fellow Irish pop star Bob Geldof and was played out across television screens worldwide from concert stages in London and Philadelphia.

The report gave no putative date for the event, but said Bono would make an announcement this week, with Geldof likely to be asked to get involved.

Geldof, however, denied he had teamed up with fellow rocker Bono for a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts. The Sun had earlier run a front page story saying Prime Minister Tony Blair was backing "Live Aid II.

Geldof, the brains behind the original concert to relieve famine in Ethiopia, said in a statement: "I told the Sun this afternoon it was not true. This only serves to undermine the concerted efforts of those concerned with the tragedy of poverty in Africa."

"However, if the Prime Minister wants to organise a Live Aid II, then good luck to him," Geldof added.

Arguably the best track from the monumental second record, The Scientist was apparently too downbeat for Coldplay's burgeoning American fanbase - they got Clocks as a second single instead.

"When me and Jonny (Buckland) went up to Liverpool on the train in November, and we were listening to what we had on the record (we had eight rough done) and we had the feeling that it was alright. And then I was sitting at this battered old piano that was completely out of tune and I'd just heard All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and heard this song called Isn't It Pity with this circular chord sequence. And this is all very anal but I felt I would like a chord sequence that went around and around, and where you don't know where it begins or ends. And this chord sequence just arrived and I thought it was really lovely. And then the whole song just came out and so we recorded it then and there, and the piano and vocal was from the day it was written.

That's it! And the best moment of the entire record for me was when came back three weeks later when we came back to this song, I just heard through a wall this riff and that's what he does at the end, and that's my favourite bit on the record. That was a great moment because it was brilliant."

For the video, Chris Martin had to learn the song backward. As he was walking forwards as normal, he was actually singing it backwards. So when the tape was played in reverse it looks as though Chris is singing it normally.

'Decade: Ten Years of Fierce Panda' features a host of the label's pioneering roster, including early recordings and rarities.

Coldplay's 'Brothers & Sisters', which was released in 1999 exclusively on Fierce Panda, is one of the highlights of the album.

The charity is backing the 'Big Noise' Music website, which launches on Wednesday and will offer 300,000 songs to download. Tracks will cost between 75p and 99p, with 10p going to Oxfam. Acts featured include Coldplay.

"Artists will see their music help some of the poorest people in the world," Oxfam's Adrian Lovett said.

The service - backed by digital music firm OD2 - will be available across Europe, although songs will be priced in sterling.

Competition is increasing in the digital music market, with Napster launching its UK service last week, and Apple's iTunes service is expected to open its doors to European users soon.

As well as Oxfam's service, OD2 also powers download services offered by Coca-Cola, HMV, Tiscali, Virgin, Ministry of Sound, Wanadoo and MSN.

According to rate the music, British R and B sensation Jamelia gave baby advice to Coldplay singer Chris Martin who recently turned father to his baby girl Apple.

Jamelia is also mom to three-year-old Teeja but incidentally she had no idea that Chris's wife Gwyneth Paltrow was expecting their first child at the time.

"We did talk kids and obviously Gwyneth was pregnant at the time, but I didn't know that. In hindsight, I thought, 'Oh! That's why we were having that conversation,'" Jamelia was quoted as saying.

"He kept asking about how demanding the role of a parent was and how to cope with the sleepless nights. Now I know he was trying to work out how feasible it is to have a child and combine it with the life of being a pop star - the touring and everything that goes with it," she added.

Apparently there are two other little Apples in the Martins' circle of acquaintances – the daughters of both Coldplay's booking agent, Marty Diamond, and Gwyneth's Shallow Hal director Peter Farrelly, are blessed with the off-beat name, reports a US magazine.

While Marty told a New York newspaper the copycat baby name is strictly a coincidence, sources say the famous couple asked the manager for his permission to dub their own daughter Apple.

Chris Martin, however, has a very simple explanation as to why he and his wife chose it. "It's a very cool name," he said. The musician made his comments as he left the family's Belgrave home, where well-wishers have left a number gifts – including a large basket of apples – in celebration of the new arrival.
