We'll undoubtably have plenty of preview material in the run up to next weekend's Glastonbury festival, but already there have been several interesting articles 'worthy' of attention (see what we did there?). We already know Coldplay will take to the stage at 10.15pm (BST) on Saturday, according to official festival website. And, we might be hearing Coldplay perform 'Singing In The Rain' once again, as the forecast for the festival is not looking good.

With the village of Pilton, Somerset already drenched after heavy rain in recent weeks, a repeat of last year's heatwave has been ruled out - the Independent write that 'muddy mayhem' could make a return this week. Wellies and rain coats will be essential packing as more than 170,000 campers arrive at the Worthy farm site from Wednesday. Coldplay are also mentioned several times in a nicely written article on the Guardian website on who the acts themselves will be watching at the festival.

Meanwhile, Elbow, the band playing immediately before Coldplay on the pyramid stage on Saturday, are planning something special, according to the Metro.

'When you play Glastonbury everyone does something special, even if it's only a little thing. We have some ideas but haven't yet settled on what we are going to do this time," Guy Garvey said.

Davide Rossi, violinist who contributed to Coldplay's fourth album Viva la Vida, and whose latest contribution are string arrangements on the new single 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', has rejected critisicm of Coldplay and their release. Writing on his Twitter and Facebook pages he commented: "Everyone seem to criticize Coldplay for their new single. I just think they are masters in turning a simple stupid sample in the most symphonic piece of music. I'm proud to be working with them." [thanks Steph589]

Speaking of 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', the new single is now #14 on Billboard's US Hot 100 chart, up from #29. Commenting, they said, "Coldplay's single [ETIAW] jumps from #29 to #14 in its second week. This was the song's first full week of sales availability. It's vying to become Coldplay's third top 10 hit, following "Speed Of Sound" and "Viva La Vida." Digital sales rank: #7 (136K).." [thanks Loki0012]

Coldplay are planning to release a physical edition of new single Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, the official site has confirmed today. ETIAW will be pressed onto physical formats for June 27th. The track will be available on CD, limited edition seven inch blue vinyl and two bonus digital releases.

If that isn't enough, Coldplay will add brand new track Major Minus, to accompany ETIAW. An iTunes exclusive bundle will be announced next week, containing as yet unannounced tracks. Looking on the Digital Stores website where the items are available for pre-order, Rolling Stone says about ETIAW: "The first single from Coldplay's upcoming fifth album, which gets in touch with the enthusiastic, imaginative spirit of early hip-hop while sounding like a mixture of U2, the Velvet Underground and rave music," and MTV said: "Vaguely trance-y, slightly meditative and most definitely sunny, ‘Teardrop’ is basically four minutes of pure, unadulterated uplift."

Will Champion and Guy Berryman both appeared on Steve Lamacq's afternoon show today on BBC6Music where they spent time discussing their forthcoming Glastonbury appearance and, perhaps more pertinently for the fans, the fifth album. You can listen again on via the BBC iPlayer if you are in the UK. Alternatively you can download the interview via our Multimedia forum now if you are having difficulty with the stream.

During the interview Guy Berryman told the listeners that the original concept ideas for LP5 are completely different to those today, and that the album is likely to have either 10 or 11 tracks to it. Speaking on Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Guy also said that the song was an example of a different approach the band are taking but is by no means indicitave of the overall era, since all the songs are different to the next.

Will, also speaking on LP5, told Steve Lamacq that the title of the new album is not yet 100% confirmed, but was more cagey than Guy on providing any further details of the record. He did describe next week's Glastonbury slot as important due to the expectation of headlining rather than 'playing in the sunshine', referring to the band's early Glastonbury appearances.

Q. Dear Oracle, I've noticed that Coldplay have not performed what in my opinion is one of their best live songs, Lovers in Japan, for their past few gigs (eg. Rock am Ring, Pinkpop), so I was just wondering, is it coz there can no longer be the massive rain of paper butterflies onto the audience anymore since they're playing open-air festivals now, so they decided to cut the song from their set list? Please bring the song back Coldplay, I absolutely love it!

I'm assuming that you watched clips online because there IS confetti on the festival tour. I won't say which song in case it spoils it for others who are going to see them. Also, just to point out that Lovers in Japan obviously isn't dependant on a confetti drop; I mean it could still be played without confetti! If my memory serves me correctly, during the first Viva dates there was no confetti during the song but Viva la Vida had red, white and blue confetti.

Hi everyone!! Just came back from Pinkpop & Coldplay! they played a great set great energy! and they played trouble!! Only thing missing was an energetic crowd we were jumping and singing throughout the whole set but didn't get a lot of people to join in.. Still.. amazing night and coldplay was outstanding once again! I hope they play princes of china next show !! so in need of that song! oh and you guys should check out Selah Sue also! She played before coldplay .. amazing artist she rocked the place!! [thanks tom043]

On the train back from Pinkpop. SUPERAWESOMENESS. Treasures gained: a handful of MX-confetti AND A FRICKIN' COLDPLAY GUITAR PICK! I'll try and upload some pix later tonight when I'm home. A couple us waited for 3 HOURS before finally getting to the front area, and we were nearly crushed to death by the hundreds of people behind us. And where we were standing the crowd were all screaming and dancing! Don't be too quick in judging us.. And Chris looked extremely happy with us, just sayin'. [thanks Ireentje]

The only non-single that got most of the crowd's attention was Charlie Brown. The majority of the crowd just lost their focus while they were playing songs like Major Minus, Cemeteries of London and Politik. I thought it was an outstanding performance though and they played Trouble! The strange thing was that most of the people actually were at the festival because of Coldplay (and maybe some other bands who play on other days). It was kind of disappointing to even see people leave during Politik. [thanks kj91]

What is that with the bad crowd?? At least from my point of view, and I was way up front this was a superb atmosphere an the guys from Coldplay looked very happy. Just remember that this is a festival, and not everybody has the same taste of music. The perfomance was once again superb, even though Chris admitted some little, as he called it, "fuckups"... And I have to state once again, ETiAW is one hell of a live concert song! [thanks PeeJay]

I got back home late last night after a long day at Pinkpop. I had a wonderful time. I don't think the crowd was bad. If it was a bit more subdued compared to Werchter two years ago, I think it was because of the time. Coldplay was scheduled at 9pm, which is very early. It was still light when they started their set. At Werchter, Rock am Ring, the headliners are on a lot later in the evening and that automatically creates a different atmosphere. There's a longer build-up. [thanks Bye]

At the front we were going nuts, I've jumped all the time and All the guys looked very happy with us indeed! So yeah, at the back people might've been a bit lame, but at the front it was great! And they were amazing!! They really were, I think they were better than at Rock am Ring, and I can't wait to see the high quality video's of it! It was a shame thought that it was still light when they started. But I just, loved it to bits, and loved meeting Coldplayers and being there with Coldplayers! [thanks 2GreenEyes]

Q. Dear Oracle, I really need to know, have Coldplay lost their touch? I know that they've collaborated with Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson to write Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, but do they now need to rely on other people writing their music for them? Is this the direction the band is headed?

The Oracle replies:

Er, Peter Allen is dead so that's impossible! There has been NO collaboration. I don't think people are quite understanding the song's composition. To clarify: Chris was inspired to write Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall after hearing some chords in a nightclub scene in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's film Biutiful (2010).

The chords in the film are part of a track that is based on I Go To Rio written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson, released by Peter Allen in 1976. If you look at a clip on YouTube you'll hear the chords for yourself. As for other people asking if Ritmo de la Noche by The Sacados should also be credited the answer is "no". Firstly, that is a cover of Chocolate's song by the same name who sampled I Go To Rio. Secondly, they both came later in 1990 so hopefully they should have credited Peter & Adrienne.

Q. Dear All-Knowing Oracle, Is there any chance that the band might officially release the alternate mix of The Escapist that plays over the end credits of the film The Escapist? Possibly as a free download for their fans? (Hint hint).

I'm afraid that's not likely. We're moving forward with the new album campaign you see. I thought I'd ask Jon Hopkins to give more info on its existence: "That version of The Escapist actually only appears at the end of the film. It is a different, longer version which was how it originally sounded. I wrote it with Chris in LA back in 2007. I mixed it in surround sound at Air later that year. We then trimmed it down for the album version, and Rik and I mixed it to normal stereo."

Last word from the Coldplay blog: 1.10am: So, we made it to the cars *just* in time. And now we're back in the UK. Everyone seemed very pleased with how the show went tonight, and spirits were high on the flight home (not least because the clock had just ticked into band PA Vicki's birthday!) Thanks again for reading. We'll see if we've got any more photos worth posting in the morning. Goodnight!

I really need to start working this morning, I will hopefully write more when I get home and post some pics as well (though I'm really not sure if they're worth posting, it was almost impossible to take any as I was pushed from basically everywhere, not in a bad way, but if you can't stay firm with the arm you get a blurred pictures fest ). Just reading around tough, as much as the people really enjoyed the gig, almost everyone was let down by how they didn't even say goodbye at the end. I've read the blog and I saw it was just because they had to catch the flight, but 99,9% of the people there didn't, so I can totally understand how they tought the band was coming back again, especially because we stayed there for other 5 minutes trying to calling them back even when the lights were already switched on and the roadies were on already on stage. I was in the second row and saw Chris taking a mic and say something just when he was going away but the sound was switched off and no one heard anything, not even us there in the front, so yeah it was a bit of a meh moment to end the gig like this. Well, just woke up after a bunch of sleeping hours. My feet are broken... too much time standing in the very first rows could be sadly painful! But I was waiting for that concert as much as I could bear! The gig was amazing, Chris' voice seemed better than the two festivals in Germany, and there was a sense of knowing-more-than-before-about-how-to-perform-the-new-songs. I was surprised to hear a lot of Italian fans singing the new songs, especially HLH and Charlie Brown. Will's performance was literally terrific, but Jonny Buckland's one was the best one ever heard by him. I think the new songs are so good as performed live, but Charlie Brown is still my favourite, and it seems the band is agreed also: they plat it with more energy than the others. Great renditions of GPASUYF (even if Chris' intro has to be rediscussed because it doesn't really fit), Politik, Cemeteries Of London, In My Place and Lost! were probably played in a slower way that the past. But hearing Life Is For Living was the most sensational experience of the night! Very very good show, one of the best I've seen so far and surely in the TOP 5 of the shows performed in Italy. I fell in love with Charlie Brown, it's marvellous, even if Major Minus has the most terrific impact since 3 or 4 years for a Coldplay show. Just a complaint: no greeting from the band at the very end of the gig, but then I've read with Denise they had to reach the airport quickly, so... I forgive them! [thanks coldpatrix]

Hi there everybody. I'm fucking destroyed. 16 hours waiting for coldplay. 1 km run. Front row dead center achieved. Ill and sick. Wtf. It was incredible. But it was a nice gig. I really like Hurts like Heaven, UATW, Major M and Charlie B. God put a smile was AWESOME. I rocked as always during Politik (WTF, thanks coldplay for having given to us this wonderful piece of music). I cried for Life is for Living, and it's the second time I cry for coldplay. It was ASTRONOMICAL. Thanks again Phil for listening to us. The most beautiful moments were when Will was greeting to me at the beginning of the gig, or when Chris pointed me cause I was not singing ETIAW, then I started sing it (Sorry guys, but I cannot love that song ) But the greatest one was during Life is for Living. Really guys. It was one of the best moment of my entire life. I was so full of joy. (even if there was such a poor number of people singing during that, what a shame). Anyway, now I'm at home, more ill and sick, but happy for having seen them again. I'm a little bit disappointed for the length of the concert, for the fact that Glass of Water was took away and for the classical Italian disorganization. But well, it was a festival. And yep, as always, I'll never stop hoping in a full band return for Shiver. Not only half the band as I heard in Liverpool and Newcastle (epic howewer..). Here from Italy, happy for being on the live photoblog again, for the 4th time, goodbye everybody, see u soon guys. [thanks axe]

I arrived home today, a bit tired but happy. It still feels a bit surreal to see them live, even if it was for a third time for me. I loved that they played Life is for living, I loved the new songs and I enjoyed ETIAW much more live than recorded. But I was expecting them to come back for the second encore, I wasn't prepared for the concert to end after the first one, so I was left a bit dissappointed. I agree with Denise, that it seemed like they were looking at the clock. And it felt like they were less personally involved. But maybe that was only my impression after seeing them in Liverpool, which can't be compared, of course. I was also dissappointed by the people around me, who were chatting, phoning and taking pictures of themselves all the time. Especially during the more quiet songs, like Us Against the World, I could hear the people talking and not the music. And I was not so far away from the stage. Nevermind, I'm happy to have been there, especially because I won't be able to travel for quite a long time again. And I didn't take any pictures or videos and concentrated only on the show, so thanks everyone for yours! [thanks wisna]

Q. Dear Oracle, At the Rock Am Ring festival Coldplay performed a new song called Charlie Brown. My question is: who is he, and why has Coldplay dedicated this song to him? Greetings from The Netherlands!

It's definitely not dedicated to a real person. The only Charlie Brown I know of is the comic strip creation by Charles M. Schulz. Given the lyric that led most fans to think the song was called Cartoon Heart, I'd say it's named after him.

Q. Hi Mr the Oracle, I saw that the Rock am Ring festival was broadcast, but I didn't know it, and I am quite disappointed to have missed such an opportunity. So I wanted to ask you, do you know if others shows of Coldplay are gonna be broadcast? Thank you very very much!

Yes, quite a few of these big festivals will be televised. They may only be showing in certain territories as is quite normal. I don't have transmission times for the globe but I will endeavour to get some/all of them and ask Anchorman to post them. BBC always show Glastonbury for example so maybe you have a big TV company who broadcast such events. It may be easier to look at your local TV listings around the time of the festival.

Q. Hey this might be an impossible thing to ask of you, but could you please please please ask the band or someone who can speak with them if they would be willing to play I Ran Away immediately after they play Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall in their live setlist? The drums at the end of ETIAW reminded me of I Ran Away, so I figured that unless there was some hidden reason why they can't or are unwilling to play the song, that they could play it (using the drums outro at the end of ETIAW as an intro to I Ran Away.That might be hard to do if the guitars aren't tuned right though. Please please try to do this, even if it seems impossible or out of place (since they're debuting new music not old). It would be appropriate to play the song because it would be a new thing, since they have NEVER played it live. Thanks to the infinitum power! Lisa

Hmm, that is never going to happen Lisa. I know what you're saying, it's a slightly similar drum pattern granted but way slower. ETIAW is a pacey, upbeat song and is the perfect set closer, there is no way that I Ran Away would fit straight after as it would be an energy stealer if I'm honest. They're playing some old tunes as well as new but I Ran Away isn't a likely choice. I know fans have been almost campaigning to hear this song live since 2008 and maybe one day... but not one in the very near future. I'd put money on it.

Although Javier was the first actor to be nominated for an entirely Spanish language performance, one could argue that as Marion Cotillard won an Academy Award for her performance in La Vie en Rose, marking the first time an Oscar had been given for a French language role that no, the language wasn't the reason Colin won. I have to say that both were worthy contenders in my opinion. Maybe there should be a best actor/actress in a foreign language award?

Given its massive bill (six headliners included), two months offers ample enough time to formulate your Lollapalooza schedule. So right on queue, the Chicago-based extravaganza, which is set to take over Grant Park 58 days from now, has revealed its day-by-day breakdown. So what’d we got?

Friday features a clash of the UK titans as Coldplay and Muse play opposite ends of the park to close out day one. You can discuss this in the Lollapalooza thread in the Coldplay Live forum. And if that schedule wasn't enough of an "ouch," dance-inducers Ratatat and Girl Talk also hit the stage in the 8:00 hour. Another nasty conflict comes before the two main headliners: Bright Eyes opens for Coldplay, while A Perfect Circle plays before Muse. But all is not lost, especially with that swing slated for the North End featuring The Kills into Mountain Goats into Bright Eyes. Other solid picks for Friday include Sleigh Bells, Cults, Delta Spirit, and Smith Westerns.

On Saturday, Eminem and My Morning Jacket headline the festivities, with Cee-Lo Green opening for the former and Ween the latter. As for the day’s big conflicts? My Morning Jacket vs. Beirut, DFA 1979 vs. Big Audio Dynamite, and Lykke Li vs. Atmosphere are a few of the more nasty ones.

To close out the festival, you’ll have your choice of rock (Foo Fighters), hip hop (Kid Cudi), or electronica (Deadmau5). If you chose option one, then a camp out might be warranted, especially since Arctic Monkeys The Cars, and Titus Andronicus all play Q Music Unlimited prior to Dave Grohl and co.. Sunday features less noticeable conflicts than the two other days, but The Pains of Being Pure at Heart vs. Jay Electronica and Best Coast vs. Portugal. the Man are hard to swallow.

This summer will be Lollapalooza’s seventh year in Chicago as a destination festival, yet the three-day music event is celebrating a 20th anniversary.

There haven’t been 20 Lollapaloozas — the tours took a hiatus from 1997 to 2003, and 2004’s was canceled due to low ticket sales before the event was reborn on Chicago’s lakefront the following year. But the website and marketing for the concert package include a “time capsule” with photos and recollections from Lollas past, back to its 1991 founding by Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell as a traveling, multistage festival.

The festival’s daily capacity will remain at 95,000 people, but this year they might have more room to roam. Charlie Jones, a partner in Lollapalooza’s organizers, the Texas-based C3 Presents, told the Sun-Times on Monday that changes to the layout will add several acres to the festival in Chicago’s downtown public park. (The footprint isn’t growing; the festival instead will utilize space it was allocated last year but did not use.) Much of that extra space will be in the softball fields west of Columbus Avenue, which last year was closed to traffic for the festival; Perry’s Stage, a tent for electronic acts curated by Lollapalooza founder and Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell, will move there and double its capacity to about 15,000, Jones said. “That part is simply responding to the demand,” Jones said. “When we started, Perry’s area was on one of those little tiny shell stages in the north end by the rose gardens. Every year it reaches capacity, and we keep moving it. ... This is going to be the biggest tents you’ve ever seen.”

Other changes will include adjusting the schedule to improve foot traffic in and out of the main stages in Butler Field, which traditionally get jammed in the evenings. Jones said the festival is also adjusting the perimeter and tightening security to avoid a repeat of last year’s rash of fence jumpers.

After arriving on the radio on Friday (June 3), Coldplay's 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' (ETIAW) blasts onto Billboard's Rock Songs airplay chart at No. 21. The song registered 3.9 million audience impressions on 58 stations, according to Nielsen BDS, despite having been released more than halfway through the May 30-June 5 chart tracking week. All according to Billboard online today.

The track concurrently launches on the Triple A adult alternative airplay chart at No. 23 and Alternative Songs at No. 28. "The reaction from our listeners has been nothing but positive," says Julie Pilat, program director of alternative KYSR (98.7)/Los Angeles, whose 24 first-week plays of "Waterfall" translated to the song's highest audience (589,000) of all BDS-monitored stations. "Fans are eager for as much Coldplay music and information as they can get their hands on. They've already started hitting us up for details on the full album and touring specifics. I expect this song to be another multi-format home run for the band," Pilat predicts.

Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, better known as BDS, is a service that tracks monitored radio, television and internet airplay of songs based on the number of spins and detections. The service, which is a subsidiary of ACNielsen provides the basis for Nielsen Media publication Billboard in the United States,

Billboard projects that "Waterfall" could open with as many as 70,000 to 90,000 downloads sold in its first week, setting up a possible top 40 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 to be released Thursday (June 9). Coldplay has scored six top 40 Hot 100 hits, including the No. 8-peaking "Speed of Sound" (2005) and No. 1 "Viva La Vida" (2008). All charts will be refreshed Thursday on Billboard.com.

ETIAW arrives ahead of Coldplay's forthcoming fifth studio album. The group's last full-length release, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," has sold 2.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, swelling the band's career U.S. album sales to 15 million.

Q. Hey Oracle! I watched the live stream of Rock Am Ring on Saturday and loved all of it, the boys reminded me why they're my favorite band in the world. All the new songs are great. I know that someone has said that there will be "no video" for ETIAW. So I guess my question is two-fold. First, why not? And second, does this mean that it isn't the lead single from LP5 (or even will be on it)? Thanks Oracle, you rock! -B

As you rightly notice there is no video - at the moment. That doesn't mean that whoever told you there'll be "no video" is correct. There MAY be a video. There may not. Oooh I'm annoying aren't I? It must appear that everything is shrouded in secrecy right now but it's not meant to be. I just want to clear up that no album track listing has been announced so whether ETIAW appears on the album remains to be seen and is not for me to speculate upon. Until the album is mastered and totally ready it would be pointless. ETIAW is a single. It's irrelevant whether it's a lead single or not as the album is still a while off. A single does not have relate to an album or appear on one, it can stand alone (as Christmas Lights did) but that doesn't mean that it will or won't. Ah sorry for being slightly cryptic guys, you know I couldn't say even if I knew (which I don't).

It's not a secret, it just hasn't been officially announced yet. We want to wait until it's absolutely finished too, which it isn't. Also, a vague time scale was given after an EMI rep quoted it.

Is there any secret conection between Coldplay and this restaurant?

Very rarely do Coldplay produce a song that divides the Coldplaying community right down the middle. But as many of you will have read on the forums over the last 48 hours, their latest single Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is now that song.

We've seen some of the media reviews earlier, but now it's time to see what you, the fans, thought of the song. Well, you could say it's like that old Marmite adage; with ETIAW you either love it or you hate it. Some of you sound like you would rather eat copious amounts of the vitamin B-rich yeast extract than listen to the song again. On the other hand there are others who are positively brimming with excitement about seeing it live, especially after seeing it streamed online from Rock am Ring. Whatever your predicament, we know you will all be very interested to see whether it makes the final LP5 tracklisting later this year.

We have had so many comments about the song in the ETIAW subforum, both good and bad, that it's been almost impossible to keep up with them all. The polls, however, speak for themselves. Since it's been released, I've listened to Live 2003 a couple of times, Rock Am Ring live yesterday evening and ETIAW - in other words, I've listened to ETIAW probably more times than would be recommended, but I still love it! I don't think I'llever set my virtual foot in the negative ETIAW thread! Compared to some of the older songs, I think ETIAW stands proud in the Coldplay catalogue... To me there's real passion, and happiness for life that inspires this track, which makes it really enjoyable. I think the track could do without the bit that was sampled... But it goes well with the track, it doesn't remove anything from it. If Chris wrote ETIAW or was inspired to write after hearing the original song, it makes some sense to include the sampling. That said, I'd like to hear an official version without it. I'm watching the Rock am Ring concert again (it took me 6 hours to download!) and I'm definitely looking forward to Every Teardrop is a Waterfall!! [thanks WH25]

As a Coldplay fan, I find this single very disappointing. This is weak, way under Coldplay's full potential, so is Chris' singing. It's as if they only want to please the people who listen to hit radio and be number 1 in the hit lists. I was wrong at first by comparing ETIAW to gorgeous songs they made before, such as Spies, AROBTTH, Trouble and I Ran Away, songs that don't use (catchy) melody samples that aren't even their own (something they shouldn't need at all). I was afraid they would be going this "big band with big hits" way. While I, and many other fans that have been following them for a longer time, am a huge fan mainly because of their moody, stripped down and goosebumps-inducing sound and deep lyrics, and also blowing-away rock, things ETIAW definitely doesn't have. Now I realise that they can still do it, and ETIAW is just some kind of experiment and it proves that they can do whatever they want, although ETIAW could have been made by any commercial pop band. However that makes me afraid that people who are not fans will know Coldplay as a band that makes stadium-filling big songs, and they are missing out on the real Coldplay. [thanks Tryptophan]

ETIAW is incredible live! There is so much energy in the performance, and they all really seem to love the song. Chris kept smiling and even Guy (who I always find looks very serious on stage!) seemed really into it. It makes it an even better performance when the band is excited about what they are playing! While it may not be a musical masterpiece, it is still far better than half the crap out there. It is an uplifting tune with good lyrics, a catchy melody, and some lovely instrumental bits. It's going to be fantastic for the festivals this summer as it is fun and easy to dance and sing along to. My first listen was about a 6-7. Didn't really know what to think about it. Then I found out about the sampling. Listened a few more times. Kind of grew on me. It sounds like Glass of Water and A Spell A Rebel Yell mixed together. I enjoy the song immensely. Very joyous and well constructed. But I do hope that LP5 will take on a different tone. When I heard the teaser for the chorus bassline, with the Radiohead-esque electronic sound, I was pumped. I'm just hoping for a slightly darker, more serious sound in LP5. It is truly a very different and a bit too mainstream sound... I gues there's nothing wrong with the band wanting to reach a different and bigger crowd. I personally don't love it, and think is only a very fun summery dancin song, easily forgettable... but I think there's nothing to be afraid about 'cause all the hard-root fans trully know Coldplay and know that we'll still have them back...meaning we will hear the regular coldplay sound in the future. So, let them have their moment, it's O.K. we haven't lost them. Lyrics, for example, sound tipically deep and meaningful. Kudos for the band, keep up the great work. [thanks starearendil]

"So you can hurt, hurt me bad but still I'll raise the flag" LOVE this lyric. Also in the beginning it mentions escaping into your favorite song. Who hasn't done that? I know people have been trashing the lyrics but I think they are beautiful. I think people are stuck on this idea that since it is the new single and it's been awhile since the last Coldplay release it needs to be a monumental, groundbreaking masterpiece. I really dislike the song... First I was like...it's nothing special but it might work. But now, it's one of my least favorite Coldplay songs...Probably next to that old song No more keeping my feet on the ground...Which I can't stand. Anyway... Having heard the other songs on YouTube I really hope that Every Tear won't be on the album...Or if it is, that it will be a bonus track... Or at least NOT a single. I'm one of the fans who really likes ETIAW. Everyone is definitely allowed his or her opinion, and I can understand why fans who were waiting for the next "Yellow" are disappointed. However, spare some thought for the marketing aspects behind the single's release. The single is meant to get people - some of whom may never have listened to Coldplay before - interested in the festival shows and in LP5. So the song had to be accessible to the casual listener, and the band went the danceable route to make it so. No, it's not "Warning Sign" but it's not crap, either. I have to smile a little and wonder, if media such as this had been around in 1967, we'd have had Beatles fans dissing "Sgt. Pepper" and longing for the times when we had lyrics such as "beep beep and beep beep yeah!" And seeing the videos from last night makes me even more eager for the album! [thanks JillyBlue]

I think the song is the sound of four people playing very tightly together and is actually a magnificent celebration song. If it is indeed the last song on the album, what a great way to end what could still be a rather intimate affair (we have heard only ONE song!). Also, in understanding Chris' statement about making a final push to be the biggest band in the world, I think they have succeeded in making an organic sounding, yet large, pop song along the lines of U2. Love the energy, and am completely intrigued by their promotion (or lack thereof) for the album. Bands get tired of their tour/record cycle and want to switch up their sound and their strategy. They have redesigned everything, from stage, to clothes, to sound, and haven't spoken one word about it like in previous campaigns. They dont need to repeat themselves or build hype after months of magazines and reporters living with them at the studio in building to the album release. They will simply let the music speak for itself. When a band the size of Coldplay say they want an album to come out with less fan fair, it's hard to imagine how, but somehow, in typical Coldplay style, they have achieved just that. A large affair without any fan fair! Kanye tried this promotion style with his last album and in some respects it failed, the gamble didn't work out with regards to album sales. But Google Coldplay and see how many sites are making the story up for the band. They haven't had to do interviews with anyone and yet EVERY music source is writing long articles about the new single and forthcoming album. They are already getting all the promotion they need. It sounds so forced. they're trying so hard to make this ridiculous dance epic summer singalong that will make everyone happy, but they tried to hard to do that instead of just making music the natural way it feels like they have the past four albums. this is so much more processed / commercialized sounding. I love the album Viva, along with all their other albums, and the song Viva was my least favorite on that album, it was popppish but at leassst it was original! That song sounds so much better now!!! I think the reason why I am so disappointed with it is because I was expecting it be something it wasn't. I first was thinking it could be something along the lines of acoustic, because as you said matts05, Chris has said the new album would be along the lines of intimate, and acoustic. The next thing I was thinking the song might be was a "punkish" song. I just got that kinda feel from the Artwork for the song, and the pictures of the band in the new clothes. But instead we got a dance song.. I guess I was just too hyped from all the little teasers the band put out weeks prior. I applaud the band for going down a new path. I tend to enjoy things that are new, and fresh. Thats why I loved VLV so much. It was a new sound, to a familiar structure of songs the band are well known for. I always loved Coldplay for singing about big things in life. Talking about the good, the bad, and the mysterious. This song talks about dancing the night away.. (Hmmm). I am baffled as well. I like it. Is it The Scientist? No. Is it Clocks? No. But it's really, really catchy, and that's what Chris is best at, giving us songs to hum and sing along with. No, he doesn't write Arcade Fire type lyrics. But give him a break. Will it be on the album? We don't know, but I think Coldplay fans saying they're going to give up the band completely if it's on the album is a bit shortsighted. It's ONE SONG, people. I don't totally dislike the song. That said, what a real fan does in my opinion is trusting the guys, that does not mean welcoming whatever they release as if it was gold even when it's not that good, but thinking that if they wrote that song they had their reasons, be trying sth different, having a festival tune, or whatever, they had sth to express. I really can't understand those who question their skills in such a dramatic way for ONE song that they don't like, especially because the other new songs show the guys are still great. At first I was incredibly skeptical, maybe because I had built up the return to an unimaginable level, so I voted it a 6, maybe a low 7. After repeated listening, each time raising the volume just a tad bit louder, I would give it a solid 9. It's not a Yellow or CLocks...yet. I disliked Violet Hill when it first came out, but after listening to it in the context of the entire album, I fell in love with it, so maybe that's how it will become with this song. Also, Coldplay stated a while back that the album would be about Spray Paint Art...and Nazis. I actually listened to this song, picturing war refugees in Germany during WW2, and their expressions toward the war ending, and being able to sing and dance again. Their teardrops were a waterfall, but they were free, and thus joyous and hopeful. It's not the Coldplay I'm accustomed to, but I do like it, and with each listen I like it more and more. I'm also no big fan of this song. So happy that the other new songs played at the festivals are way better than this one. I would also agree that it is the most flat song Coldplay ever made....I think Coldplay just did this track to jump onto the dance trend in popular music and as a seller for the new album. It does not even come close to Viva la vida, although I always considered this to be one of their worse songs. ETIAW starts in the beginning with this awful sample which I always associate with Verona Feldbusch (German fans will understand). Afterwards the verses always repeat this "stolen" melody, the vocals are not interesting, it is overproduced etc.. Yeah, live it functions a bit better but that does not change the fact that it will be on the studio album and sound very cheesy. The only things I appreciate about this song are the drums at the end and that it will be the final track on the album so I don't have to skip! [thanks Sparks22]

I'm more than willing to point at the exact reasons this song rubs me the wrong way. The lyrics are juvenile and a definite step backward, though unfortunately that seems to be a theme with most of the new songs. The music seems more than sampled, its nearly a direct copy, and its not pleasing to the ear, sounds like a cheap dance track from katie perry. The song goes nowhere, you keep waiting for it to take off and it just goes flat. I'm not hearing analysis like this from the people who love it so why they feel the need to brand people with a negative opinion as "not true fans" is beyond me. And no the fact that its "pop" is not a problem for me, I happen to be a fan of hanson, a pop band to the core. Media reviews of Coldplay's new single 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' have been largely positive, but what comes with that is the controversy of claims that they copied a '90s dance track, according to sources such as DigitalSpy, Toronto Sun and the Scottish Daily Record. Soon after the new track debuted on radio stations and online yesterday, various people commented on YouTube that the song bares a resemblance to dance song 'Ritmo De La Noche'.

However, Coldplay have already confirmed on their recordings page that the band collaborated with Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson for the track, whose song 'I Go to Rio' was sampled in 'Ritmo De La Noche'. Allen and Anderson received a writing credit for the track, as the band confirmed on Coldplay.com: "'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' contains elements of 'I Go To Rio' written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson."

Coldplay's spokesperson said: "Chris was inspired to write the song after watching the film Biutiful by Alejandro Gonzalez. In the film, there is a nightclub scene - during which a track is playing in the background, based on 'I Go To Rio' by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson. As a result, Allen and Anderson are also credited as writers on 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'."

Overall reaction to the anthemic track has been positive and Scots in particular will appreciate its bagpipesque guitar riff. One Twitter follower decribed it as a "stadium anthem reminiscent of the X&Y days". Another added: "It sounds pretty average on first listen but I think it's gonna be a grower." But another wisecracking blogger wrote: "The new single is so middle of the road it might as well have been a series of white lines and a squashed badger," and another said: "Wow, good song but it is a copy of Ritmo De La Noche." Another wrote: "Even Coldplay can't come up with new things. Year of the copycats."

Now that Coldplaying works again (and my emotions are back in control) - FUCK I loved this show! Even just watching it on tv. I love the new songs, especially Major Minus. And Hurts like heaven (fast!). I loved all of the guitar parts. I loved GPASUYF and Cemeteries. Shed a few tears during (all-time favourites) Politik and The Scientist and one during (new favourite) LIFL. Will was awesome (as usual). I loved Jonny's guitar parts. Awesome to see him loving to be rocking it (and to see Chris loving Jonny loving to be rocking it). I loved Guys big basslines, I loved Chris' gorgeous singing (fix you anyone?). I love how happy the guys looked, I love their outfits, I loved the light show and all the colours, I love the piano, I loved (singin in) the rain, I loved the lightning during Clocks. Idk, somehow I didn't expect them to do this, like BOOM. I'm sure everyone there had an awesome time. Even those big guys with long hair and beer and tattoos. Still not too fond of ETIAW, but could get used to it. Also not too fond of booing Germans, but very fond of a joking Chris Martin. I also loved The Kooks. Anything else? The whole first half of the concert, from Hurts Like Heaven through Violet Hill... I've never seen Coldplay rock so hard. They played all upbeat songs, with the exception of Lost, which still has a powerful beat... Major Minus was freaking awesome. They were seriously rocking hard during that, and then God Put a Smile Upon Your Face was the most epic I've ever heard it. Definitely like that Chris picked up the electric, that's rare. AWESOME SHOW. Any doubts I may have had from ETIAW are put to rest.. I am so happy that they mixed up the setlist from yesterday, hope that continues for the rest of the summer. Song by Song breakdown: MX: Little intro? Good lead into; Hurts Like Heaven: i'm digging it, chorus seems solid, we'll see how it develops from more listens; Yellow: classic, has to be played every show and a good way to get the audience into it after two new songs; In My Place: Fantastic as usual, like the confetti early in the show, makes the stage all pretty for the rest of it; Major Minus: Again, good on first listen, bet it'll get even better.. kinda dark, but it's a cool song.. not sure why "Major Minus" is the title though; Lost!: I like the addition of the balloons for this one, plus Singing In The Rain outro was a nice touch; Cemeteries Of London: interesting to see this guy pop up, but I love it and think it's one of the most underrated from VLV; God Put A Smile Upon Your Face: LOVE LOVE LOVE the new into, Chris fingerpicking the electric sounded soo cool; Violet Hill: was not expecting this to pop up, but they have a big catalogue and I hope they remember that when making their setlists this summer!; The Scientist: my favorite Coldplay song, so happy to see it return to it's full form and not that acoustic version; Us Against The World: Reminded me a lot of Til Kingdom Come but that's not necessarily a bad thing!; Politik: Perfectly placed in the setlist, great energy and sliding into VLV after that mini piano intro/outro was awesome; Viva La Vida: just like Yellow, got the audience to go crazy; Cartoon Heart: probably my favorite new song that they played, that guitar riff was amazing (I know the live stream called it "Charlie Brown" but I think "Cartoon Heart" is the real name); Life Is For Living: WHAT?! Can't wait for more surprises like this one..; Clocks: Well, yeah, not what I wanted to hear, but they had to play it. wow... kinda blown away by this concert. Sometimes, I really don't like it that I don't cry during concerts. Coldplay would deserve that I really loved the moment of Us Against the World, when they stood there on the stage, close together, all happy to play music again and singin these song... Coldplay's long awaited comeback single 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', takes a sample from Australian 1970s songwriter Peter Allen's single 'I Go To Rio', the band have confirmed on their recordings page for the new single. The track was released in 1976 on Allen's fourth album 'Taught By Experts' and has since been covered by a number of high profile artists, including Peggy Lee. Allen, who died in 1992, enjoyed a successful music career in the 1970s and 1980s, releasing over ten solo albums. He has also seen his songs covered by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dusty Springfield and Olivia Newton-John. Coldplay have credited Allen as a songwriter on the list of writers for 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' on Coldplay.com. James Murphy sampled Velvet Underground on LCD Soundsystem's Drunk Girls. Nobody tell me that LCD weren't one of the best bands of the past decade. Samplings are hard to pull off and require a lot of talent to make it their own. Personally I love the new track, I think it's fantastic and could dance/jump/be enthusiastic to it all day. It remind my of LCD's All My Friends in that it follows the same two chords throughout and builds on them to a big ending. Great work. [thanks R_Burns]

An absolutely amazing song - full of euphoria and joy. I love the boldness and the colours, the experimentation and the 'heart on sleeves' pumping thrill of it. Some people only want Coldplay to do sad introspection, but I love that sometimes they just say, 'Sod it, this makes us happy'. Also, I'd love anyone on here who's being negative to write a song that is a quarter as good as ETIAW. Turn the volume up, open the windows and throw your arms in the air for this one. I gave it a 4. That was nice. It might be a 2 or 3 in comparison with Coldplay's overall catalog, even though "Viva la Vida or Death and Blah Blah Blah" was hit-and-miss for me. I gave it a little nudge because if it's anything like "Viva la Vida" (the song), it has live potential, especially since Chris's voice isn't very pure in this studio version. Whether this is the biggest single to come out of the next album may not be relevant, though. Yeah, "Violet Hill" wasn't released so far in advance before the album, but I ended up liking it better than probably half the album, and better than VLV too. But most songs on the album didn't sound like "Violet Hill" at all. But I could be in denial about this just because I'm so disappointed in this lead single. [thanks Corkus]

I think it's worth considering that this song might not be indicitive of the album at all (we don't even know that's it's on there, although I imagine it will be) and maybe they wouldn't have released it first if they weren't playing all these festivals...but Glastonbury, especially, must have been playing on their mind and maybe they wanted to release something summery, upbeat and festival friendly (which it most certainly is). Well, what can I say... obviously, old coldplay is gone forever but that's not bad at all, all the albums are different in some way. After a couple of listens I think that is a fresh song, great for summertime (although it's almost winter here ) and it's a fun song to sing along. I don't believe that every song on this album is going to be like this, or at least I hope so, because even though I like this song I would like to hear the Coldplay I fell in love to. For example, when Beady Eye released their first single "Bring The Light" everybody (including me) were excited for it but when it came out it was quite disappointing actually, and everybody was saying how simple it was and how shit the lyrics were. But when the album came out, it turned to be one of the best albums i've heard. I hope Coldplay had released this song just because they're playing some festivals and they thought this song could be nice for summertime, and then when the album comes out, it will blow out our minds. First impression was...hmmm different, but as the song goes on you realise it is a growing succession of the VLV Album. One may say Coldplay's style in RoBH and Parachutes is missed but, then again, those albums haven't gone away. If Coldplay produced another album similar to the two previously mentioned, it becomes quite ordinary and may suggest a lack of new ideas. The idea that the best of the band has been heard and that they're going backbto their safe zone would have also resulted. This single suggests the work of Coldplay is one of progress. At first listen, I really disliked the beginning pop-ish sample. It really ticked me off from what I thought the song would be like. Hopefully the album isn't too far into pop crap that is popular these days. They need to make music for the music, not popularity. It's called "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" and they said they were going for a more stripped-down, acoustic album. But it definitely is not that at all. It's more of a summer anthem dance-pop song. I was a bit disappointed but I think it's a grower. Just another bit, I'm really used to Coldplay songs having that beautiful ending to every song. Even Christmas Lights had a touching ending to that song. Lovers in Japan had an epic ending with the guitar back to the main beat/melody. But this song just doesn't hit the right place. The drum ending is obviously Will's idea, and I know it's something new for them to try, but it didn't make me think, "wow that song was epic." So I gave it a 7. It might be 7-8 after a few more listens. I seriously hope this song is like the Violet Hill of this album, and there will be some underrated songs such as "Cemeteries of London", "Death and All His Friends", "Strawberry Swing", and "Lovers in Japan". Fun song. I can already see the big festival crowds singing and waving and jumping along to it. Makes me wish I could be there. It's definitely meant to mainly be a live song, and it's going to be one of the highlights of their show I would say. As a recorded single? Not their greatest and not their worst. Just really fun. Once almost everybody has heard it I'll give you my humble opinion. I think the song is catchy, but it's not a brilliant song, really... not the one they'll be remembered. But I think that this one is not going to be finally in next album. Really. At least, I hope so... [thanks locust7]

Strange...I experienced the same build-up with everyone all week long, full of unspeakable anxiety. But the moment I sat in my car this morning and blasted the song for the first time, I wasn't thinking about "old Coldplay", or the "new direction" or all the premature negativity around the lyrics or cover art. I suppose my head was quite clear from all of that because I just sat there fully enveloped, mouth dropped open, soaked in a blissfull ambiance of Coldplay magnificence. I listened to it repeatedly on the way to work, so excited to see the comments on these forums; to see how others must be drooling similarly about how the song made them feel. Instead I'm completely taken aback by how downplayed the response is: the "so-so's", the ranking of 4's and 7's, the immediate likenesses drawn to LIJ and VLV (which was a predictable comparison given the early insight) while even some now dissillusioned about the new sound, even putting into question their continued devotion to the band. It's sort-of heartbreaking to see. Perhaps on the flip-side it's heartbreaking for those "old-school" fans to embrace...I dunno. Not this fan. I also don't see the song, as some hyperbolize, as aimed at "15 year-olds". Coldplay's music has always trenscended age groups regardless; and I greatly respect their ability to do that. I think it's also a bit unfair for so many to immediately assume that the rest of the album will share the same mold of this first song. Had VLV been the first song on the previous album perhaps that would've been the same conclusion to draw. However, that album turned out to be quite different altogether (admittedly, more ecclectic perhaps). These are my opinions of course, and I do respect everyone elses' even though I may dissagree. I just wanted to convey my dissapointment, less with the song, and more with the reactions. I'm honestly baffled..it's an amazing song that was completely unexpected even with all of the early rumors about it being "dancy", etc.. It actually leaves me starves for more as if waiting for the punch-line. I'm so impressed by their growth and development, and the culmunating of their talents; reaching in new ways. I just can't help myself from loving this song, and I don't care if it's 'not creative' or 'boring' to some people, it's a lead single and it's a fun one at that. But it also bears the mark of Coldplay lead singles, they're good, but not the best on the album and Jonny always has some killer riff (Shiver, In My Place, Violet Hill). If it's treated like anyone of those songs I'll be perfectly happy.. as a potential album closer I'm not so sure.. but please please Jonny don't let this be the only song where you actually play guitar, please let it carry over for the entire album once! I personally am loving the song but i want to say something to any people who fall in the group of people who think they haven't done enough with the song. for those people who thinks its too big of a change, i just can't understand where you're coming from. i can respect your opinion but not understand it. while i love this song, i also realize it might be the "broadest" song on the album - it's their first single. those songs are always the most mainstream for any band. very few bands would do a radiohead and put out some crazy song - even they don't do that anymore. so i really do think the album looks good if this is the first single. i'm excited and i really love this song! I was taken aback at first because that's not at all what I expected. I was kinda thinking it would be like a LiT kind of vibe. But this works too. Sampling works sometimes (LiT) but LiT was integrated so prefectly and struct a perfect balance between Hopkins and Coldplay. They seem to do it A LOT though. Once every album since X&Y, if I'm not mistaken. Arguably, more that once in Viva (Cough Cough Santarini) (By the way I'm on Coldplay's side for that one). I'm just saying a lot of people may sat that. The haters mentioned above, perhaps? Anyway, it's not the best Coldplay song, but neither was Violet Hill (my least favorite from Viva), which was the first out of the gate from Viva, which was stunning. Is that what they're trying to do, anyway? Come out with the best song right away? I still have faith in something great. Have we forgotten that these guys are geniuses? They know what they're doing. Not really understanding the bashing of this song. What isn't to like? This song is a mixture of classic Coldplay, Viva, and a new direction, I think it's absolutely brilliant. Let me just say this: When Violet Hill came out 3 years ago, the first single off of Viva La Vida, I was NOT too excited. I enjoyed the song, but wasn't in love with it, never have been. But I LOVED Viva as an album. So, if this song is any indication of how the album is going to sound, I think we are all in for a VERY special treat, and an album that will be timeless, as is all Coldplay music. I gave it an 8. Mostly because I love the sound, lack of verse-chorus-verse structure and gradual build-up, but I'm really surprised they went down the 'sampling' route after all the fiasco of VLV so deducted a couple of points as the originality is lacking. It is still better than a lot of current pop songs. Coldplay have definitely confirmed their move towards more mainstream/pop than their alternative rock past with this single. I remember thinking this when VLV was released, but thought it might be short-lived. I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing, but I can also see how others might feel alienated! Ultimately, they'll always lose fans and gain fans as their career progresses. I feel while there may be a lot here that give up on the band, a lot more will come in and take their place. I gave a 8 ! I already listened to it many times and i do like their innovation in this song...new rhythm and new catchy melody. They took the risk to make something different and they did it very well. Ok, it's not mindblowing compared to Fix You and Clocks, i agree, but what if each new song from their LP5 was the same or almost the same as the previous ones ? people would certainly find a way to say there's anything new ! So, innovation sometimes is pretty good as they did it here...just a way to express something new with creation and imagination ;-) Plus, they did something "swinging" in this song...i'm sure more than one person will dance during the festivals, trust me ! :-) So, here's my opinion. But, btw, i just want to specify that i agree with the fact that some people don't like this song or are disappointed (and that's their choice !), but please, is this really intelligent to write some nasty words ?? like "Coldplay is a fucking load of shite and this just confirms it.", for example. Well.. i've learned not to judge coldplay songs on the first day everytime i do it grows on me that much that i regret giving it negative comments . It makes me happy anyway .. the song ... although the lyrics dont make that much sense and could be a bit more complex and flowing. but ah wel let's see what comes out of the album ! I can't understand people being so negative about this song. Two of three posts are angry/disappointed/contemptuous... Well I understand that anticipation made you believe that whatever they put out should be mind-blowing genius and in the way you want it to be. A mixture of Politik and Clocks, or The Scientist and Viva la Vida, whatever. Perhaps when hopes are too high, it spoils impression, because ETIAW is a nice summer song. It's catchy, dance-y, cheerful. It's good for listening in the car and hopping to at the festivals. Music must be different, for different people and different moods. Have you ever had that happy, cheerful attitude in the summer, just having a good time? I had. And I know what's this song about. And people, there is whole wide world around you with a lot of great different music. I'm torn between a 5 or 6. I gave it a 6 because it's a little closer to good than bad, I guess. The lyrics are bad, I suppose, but they're pretty standard Coldplay material. Certainly better than many favorites around here like Lovers in Japan, Glass of Water, Fix You, and so on. The music is nice enough, but my biggest problem is that (in a way terrifyingly similar to many songs on X&Y) the song never really takes off. It's loud and shiny, but I'm a bit bored by minute two. Usually their best arena songs manage to be bombastic but dynamic. Viva La Vida (the song), for instance, surprises with the little bells between the first two verses, before exploding at the end and then disappearing into lovely synth. Even so, I'm not calling this a sell-out. They're already one of the most popular bands in the world. Putting out pop as opposed to say, Clocks 2.0 (or maybe it'd be 3.0 by now) is riskier given the already established fan base. [thanks MasoKnight]

At first I was really excited for the single and once I heard it at first I wasn't entirely sure what to expect and whether I liked it or not. After listening to it a couple of times, I really liked it! I loved the colorful fast paced rhythm of it and I loved Jonny's guitar part! The lyrics weren't so bad and I'm sure it will grow on me. This is definitely the era of a new Coldplay and I can't wait to see how the next album or single will turn out! However there were something I didn't like about it.

1. I was worried in the intro that Chris sounded autotuned, since his voice is great and I really would hate it they messed with his voice; 2. The sampling, it's a large part and I'm scared they'll forget how to be creative and just be lazy when it comes to making music; 3. Chris almost sounds like he's been drowned out by the sound and trying to yell, but now that I think about if they were purposely trying to do it and show a sense of urgency in the music then it worked. I'm not sure what to feel. Really at a lost for words atm. It's not what I expected though, I will give them that. But there's definitely hope. I've listened about five times since returning home a short while ago and it seems to get better every time. It's not a bad song I don't think. I just don't know how to process it yet. I might well be obsessed with it in a week. Not true about the Violet Hill thing I read awhile back. Well, maybe it was here and that people were skeptical about/displeased with it. But for some reason i loved it since the first time I got it off the site and heard it. It had that somewhat hard-rock feel with the jarring riffs that I always listened to with my Dad. Coldplay head to Rock im Park festival tonight... (source: Coldplay's Twitter)

Coldplay played the Rock im Park Festival, Nürnberg, Germany last night (3rd June 2011), with SEVEN new songs added to the setlist, according to Coldplay's band assistant, Vicki Taylor, who also tweeted a picture from behind the stage.

Setlist details are somewhat sketchy at the moment, but it is believed that Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall closed the show. The Fuzzy Man that was seen in an earlier teaser video posted on ColdplayTV made an appearance as the background visual to one of the new songs, Hurts Like Heaven. Read below to see what the man does. There is a video posted in the Coldplay Live forum here, of another new song, as yet unknown. This could be Against The Wall, which is another title rumoured. There are also videos for Fix You, The Scientist, and Yellow.

Just back from the first gig. Here are a few details: 1) Confettis make a return - only in a different form..new confettis are shaped in X's. 2) Balloons make a return - in different colors..red, yellow, blue, green. 3) There were tons of new songs. 4) I LOVED the new song with walking man! Remember that colorful light guy walking in the teaser video..that turned out to be the background visual video for one of the new songs..and that song is amazing!! Not sure about the name - but as he starts to walk..than he runs..than he flies! Song is getting faster and faster. Loved it. 5) VIVA LA VIDA makes a return with a different ending..it starts like the usual one and ends with a slow piano solo of Chris. 6) In one of the songs..Will plays the piano and sings with Chris. 7) I love the new outfits..and I'm sure we will see many variations as the tour goes on. 8) New guitars have words written all over them..and some of the insturments are spray painted all over in grafitti. I just HOPE they are new ones though - and hope they didn't REPAINT the amazing VIVA pianos. 9) There were tons of new songs. 10) Fireworks were amazing. 11) Lasers..everywhere. Lights.. 12) New stage is so colorful..at first it's difficult to get use to..but once you see it with all the lights, pyros etc. everything blends well together. 13) Starting with Cemeteries of London..screens turn black & white and cameras focus on Jonny. Looks really cool. 14) After one of the last songs..as everyone is done playing..Chris stops..Guy and Jonny put away their guitars and Will continues fast solo drumming which sounds rather amazing. 15) Chris has new moves..full of energy. 16) There are certain pathces that looks like dream-cathers on the jackets..and those shapes are also used as lights on the stage. 17) Intro..is the best yet! 18) Outro..Every teardrop..I don't like the song yet..but i'm sure I will get used to it quick. 19) In my place..dance moves..great! 20) New song..not sure of the lyrics..but I think it was going somehting like this: I got one eye watching you, one eye watching you..Chris on guitar..great song. 21) Again i have to check my pictures - but if i remember correct its written "Shit happens" on one of Jonny's gutars. 22) There might be a second confetti shape variation besides "X" one. I feel sleepy and exhausted^^. yesterday I was trying to get through to cping a few times but my internet didnt work so well that i finally gave up and enjoyed the concert instead of spending my time with typing messages. There will be no official video for Coldplay's new single 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' (ETIAW), according to Debs Wild (self-titled 'the link between band and fans') on Twitter this morning. In a response to Coldplayer alejolo, she simply replied "No video".

Assuming there will not be a video, this throws into doubt whether ETIAW is actually the first official single from as-yet-untitled LP5, or whether the song will actually be on the album at all. The song is one that will be clearly comfortable in the festival environment, and may have simply be released for the festivals themselves. No official word has been given yet on how (or if) ETIAW fits into the album, although an article back in November 2010 suggested it may be the closing track, as it was on last night's setlist at Rock im Park festival, Germany.

I think you may be right about ETIAW as not an official single because Debs mentioned on here twitter in a convo with @alejolo that a "song" will not be getting a video. Neither refer to the title of the song though so who knows... [thanks dpkekoa]

I think nowadays singles are dropped months before a new album drops, just to test the waters and do any last minute tweaking in the album before it goes to press... but thats just my opinion. I would suspect sometime in the summer.. maybe mid to late June, or possibly the end of summer.. fall maybe? But that would seem to be too much time if they are playing at least 3-4 new songs at these gigs.. hmmm... I gotta think this one through... in the meantime I don't think ETIAW is the official 1st single. [thanks berrywoman]

I think that it will be [on the album, but I think the people who think it won't also have valid points. I'd rather have this be a standalone, but in the context of the album I'm sure I'll like it at least a bit more. For some reason, when I hear singles alone I often end up feeling weird about them and/or disliking them. But when I hear them on the actual album, I see their merit. Hrmm... I'm kinda torn on this one. On one hand, ETiaW was apparently a song originally on the list to be a LP5 song. It also has the graffiti-inspired artwork and carries themes of the White Rose Movement. But, isn't this album supposed to be 'more stripped down, acoustic and intimate'? ETiaW certainly isn't any of those things, as it sounds like more like a one-time summer hit to be played at festivals and maybe concert openings. Also, I find it very suspicious that the guys haven't given us the title for LP5--I believe we knew about VLVoDaaHF as a title before Violet Hill was released. And another thing--I heard that ETiaW is supposedly an album closer, but to me it sure doesn't sound like one. Maybe an intro track, but not a closer by any means. Off topic: I think it's great, actually, that they've released a song not everyone goes CRAAZY about. It shows that they're creating new stuff, and that they aren't afraid of producing things that won't associate to their previous material.

The Pierces said that they scrapped the first attempt at LP5 and started again, but they recently started reworking some of the scrapped songs to fit the current album. This gives the impression that the original plan was to make a stripped down album recorded in a church but they've moved on from that idea. Bear in mind Chris talked about the acoustic idea 2 years ago. A lot could have changed since then. There were also reports a few months ago about Will wanting to do a rave/dance album, and if ETIAW is anything to go by then that's the sort of thing that they're going for. [thanks Cleggy]

At first I was assuming that it would be on LP5, but as I was listening to the song this morning the thought popped into my head that maybe it won't be on the album. It seems very festival-y and summery, perfect for their festival tour this summer. Also I thought they said (though this was a while back so it could have changed) that this album would be more acoustic and stripped down, so this just wouldn't seem to fit if that was the case. I think it depends on how far off the album is. If it's still a few months away and the band thinks that the song has failed in any way (keep in mind I like the song) then they could decide to drop it from the tracklisting and write it off as a one off single. Even if they could though I'm not sure they would do this. If they are in the stages where the album is already being manufactured then it is, of course, too late for any such changes. I really liked the song. It is amazing. But I think it won't be in the album. Take into account that they have never mentioned the album when referring to the song. And I think this will be a unique song for its style. Therefore, it won't be part of LP5. [thanks the_escapist]

Coldplay's new single 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' will drop tomorrow (Friday) and so far all the reviews (mainly from DJs) we've found on Twitter and other sources have been very positive. Of course "they would say that wouldn't they", you might say. Well, in addition to comments under 140 characters, this is what The Sun wrote about the track online this morning:

"If Chris Martin fancied a sideline writing euphoric dance tracks for pilled-up clubbers, he'd do good business. The new Coldplay single Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is an up-tempo hit. Coldplay played a new friends and family gig for 150 people at the Forum in Kentish Town, London last night (31st May), ahead of their forthcoming festival appearances starting on Friday in Germany. Apparently, SEVEN new songs were played alongside some older songs. You can read more about this at the Coldplay forum forum now; hopefully we will get more news on this soon. In the meantime, one Coldplayer said:

My sources inform me that it was held at the Forum, Kentish Town. About 150 people in attendance as stated earlier. 7 new songs played along with Yellow, In My Place, God put a smile, Scientist, Clocks, Fix You, Lost, Cemeteries, Viva La Vida. They finished with Every Teardrop. No advertising anywhere, maybe some competition winners perhaps aswell? Very positive [reaction] I'm led to believe. My friend wasn't able to get hold of the set-list that was onstage, so cannot be sure of any names of the new songs - aside from the single. One track I'm told though did stand out as a fast and loud number, featuring a repeated line "I've got one eye on the wall and one on you"...

Sorry guys, I can't say how they got in, but apprently everyone was politely told before the gig to turn their phones off and refrain from taking any photos. My friend tells me it was amazing not to see anyone holding up a camera or phone filming the concert, as you're so used to it at most gigs these days. I'm taking my exams and they finish on the 23rd of June Coldplay then play at Glastonbury fest on the 25th which means I can stay up and watch it and enjoy awesome show which I'm sure they will give us so to make sure it's an awesome show I want to know if Coldplay might perform any new tracks from the up and coming album? Guy has been in Coldplay (well, Starfish back then) since they began. Will was a happy accident and the last to join. He did a favour by stepping in to drum on their demo but they hadn't got a permanent drummer at that time so he didn't replace anyone.

Coldplay are set to release new song this Friday (June 3), it's been official site on the official site today. The track, entitled 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', will be available digitally at 12pm (BST), except in the UK where it will be released 36 hours later at midnight on June 4th into June 5th.

The announcement follows a number of teaser clues posted on the band's Twitter and Facebook pages. At present, it is not known whether 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' is a one-off single or a track taken from Coldplay's forthcoming new album. Coldplay have yet to confirm when their follow-up to 2008's 'Viva La Vida and Death And All His Friends' will be released, but is it expected to arrive before the end of 2011. The band are scheduled to headline the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset next month.

This is one of the most exciting times to be a Coldplay fan. On the verge of a new album era (soon to be defunct "LP5") we're almost upon the new single, so we're given to believe after Monday's latest video from ColdplayTV. The 'final' video teaser arrived with the following lyrics: "But my heart is beating and my pulses start / Cathedrals in my heart / And we saw oh this light / I swear you, emerge blinking into / to tell me it's alright / as we soar walls / every siren is a symphony / and every tear's a waterfall."

So far on Monday evening we've had several discussion points, the first being the theory that the title of the album is roughly "Mnemonics and Murals". The second point is that something new will happen on Tuesday, possibly being the new single dropping, given the lyrics videos may have "finally" dried up. Thirdly, the lyrics we've seen so far might either be the completion of one song, two songs, three songs, or four songs from a forthcoming EP or even a collection of every song on the new album! Fourthly, there's a new Coldplay song called Shooting Star, according to the PRS database.

The latest lyrics video has now taken the "Walking Man and Lyrics Videos + New GIFs + Screencaps/grabs" thread to approximately 140 pages, 2000+ posts and 70000 page views in just six full days. Read on for some of your latest comments and thoughts on the lyrics/song/arrangement so far...

UGH, I really thought we'd get more than just a teaser today...but at least that one says "finally," which I take to mean we won't have any more bloody teasers. But like some other people, I'm starting to think that all these various teasers haven't been teasing us for one song, they've been lyrics from various parts of the album, and they're gearing us up for an album announcement. I still think it would benefit them (and us) to have one new song to bring on the road with them starting Friday, but I just don't think all these lyrics etc. are from one song anymore. Personally I don't think the album will be called 'Mnemonics and Murals' I still think the initials will be M......... X....... and it'll be released on October 10th in UK. Even Oracle said the release date for the album has always been the same. My guess is they've had the title for a while and found out that the 10th day of the 10th month (due to MX in Roman numerals meaning 1010) is a Monday. Last year Chris said in an interview that he hoped the album would be out for Christmas 2010. I'm guessing an idea of release date was going to be 10/10/10 at that time, but obviously the album took longer than expected... In other news, I heard a new Coldplay song title today called 'Shooting Star'. Infact the title could very well be Mnemonics and Murals because if you go to the coldplay official website and hover above where it says 'exhibition room' I used to think that was a crown but it could be two 'M's put together and that could be their new logo. I'm a member of PRS and there's an online database you can check for every writer in the UK. I checked it today for Chris Martin and there was a new addition (writing credits by all members of the band) a song called 'Shooting Star' and it says 'New Work'. "And finally" ?! So there's a chance it's the last video. Now we even know which song all that teasing was about (Every teardrop is a waterfall). BUT still, it sounds like they can release one or two videos, giving us clearer sound. Yesterday we got a kind of melody, today the bass rythm. Seems like there are things missing. Also, notice the "..." ? That could mean the single is for tomorrow, yes... But it could as well mean the next video is the next part of the sentence. I really don't think that these could all be from different songs. Some of the lyrics do have some differences, but Coldplay did post two videos with "I turn the music up". The trapezes video also included "Maybe" as the first word of every line, just as the other gif with "Maybe the streets alight". I think the lyrics are all part of one song. I think that this last video may be the chorus to the song "Every Tear's A Waterfall". [thanks laxwatcher]

I think they've given us previews of the THREE singles they will be releasing from the album. Makes sense. The first single would be the first couple of videos they posted...the ones with the weird titles with the letter of the beginning of each word. The second single would be "Trapezes". The final single is this one..."Every Tear Is A Waterfall". Makes perfect sense now! maybe they won't even release all three yet. Maybe just the first one. But I do think they have just shown us snippets of the singles they will release off of the album. That's what the "And finally..." means. I'm totally buying into the multiple songs theory in regards to what they've been previewing. The whale noise, the star trek references, the walking man visuals, the "morse code," the random video sounds, the disparate lyrics, and the video visuals simply just don't all fit together into one song. There's just no way. That said, I'm not buying that they've already pegged what songs will be singles over the entire era of LP5, and that they're hinting to all of those right now. I don't think even Coldplay would be able to determine (aside from the lead single) which songs they'll use as singles until the album is released and everything receives some positive/negative critical reaction. Also, releasing three singles simultaneously seems weird and unnecessary. What I'm thinking is that these songs they've been giving hints to over the last few days are part of a three/four song EP and/or a single with a few b-sides that they put out imminently right as these festivals start, which kind of previews what the album will be like later in the summer. That way they'd have more than just one song worth of new material to play at festivals for the next several months, but they don't have to rush an entire album out in the next few days. The video from yesterday and today go together. that pulsating sound you get with the bass I am pretty sure is going to be product of sidechain compression (you can kind of hear it in the one yesterday as well). This basically means there will be a house-like drum beat that goes with whatever this song is, but I am 95% sure the video from yesterday and today go together. [thanks bearcat1229]

I have no doubt that those lyrics all belong to the same song. They fit together lyrically, rhythmwise and why would this be the last video if they wanted to give out teasers and hints step by step? Then we'd know more abotu the album. Plus, there are strong connections between some of the verses. Think the lyrics got better and better and now I find them absolutely fantastic. Btw, judging what locust7 said it is very probable that we will hear several new songs (since the videos and pictures refer to different songs - apparently) before LP5 is released. Oasis released 3 singles between April and October before the release of (What's The Story) Morning Glory in 1995. I think we'll get the single very very soon and most probably a second one before the release of the album in late September/October. ok, sorry if im completely wrong, but im new to posting on here (although ive been a coldplay fanatic for 10+ years)...anyway, i was reading over locust7's posts on the forum, and its absolutely uncanny that the things he says resemble the truth, i honestly think, and im open to correction, that locust7 is someone within the coldplay camp. just a few examples: "the melody and rhythm on this song maybe nothing you ever expected to hear before from them (and it's just speculation)" - obviously they had to say its speculation... "No, I'm sorry... But I don't think it'll be on Monday, that's all I can say (but maybe Tuesday or Wednesday)". Monday has come and gone without a single release...and the most revealing for me: "Maybe the answer of how the LP or the song is titled or are in front of us, and always have been... Lyrics of the song shown regard that music is the issue, could the M word be just "Music"?" Mnemonics and murals, right in front of us no? and the MX on the newspaper on the website and the MM painted with spray paint on the website "You people, all scratching your heads right now, wait for a week, and you'll see...
