Coldplay banned children’s choirs from their Christmas record, amongst other things, Will Champion has confirmed. The band have released single 'Christmas Lights' and made a list of the predictable festive pop sounds they didn’t want on the track. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, which you can download drummer Will said: "Funnily enough when we were writing this song we thought about all the things that take a song from being a great Christmas song to being a huge Christmas song, and we had a long list of things that we would absolutely not put in our Christmas track."

Chris Martin interjected to add: "You threw all my lyrics out didn’t you?"

Will continued, saying: "About the reindeer and stuff? It’s been done before. A children’s choir, that’s a no-go, and sleigh bells. There is a fine line between good and cheese."

Although Chris is pleased with the group’s foray into festive music, the singer insists he isn’t going to worry about what the reaction is to ‘Christmas Lights’ – which has already charted in over 10 countries. He said: "I’m not going to get all paranoid about it. It’s Christmas! Start worrying in January."

Coldplay singer Chris Martin is nominated in the Best Song category for next year's Oscars. Chris wrote the track 'Me And Tennessee' which has been nominated for one of the prestigious film industry awards after it was used in his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow's movie 'Country Strong', about an alcoholic country singer trying to stage a comeback. The track is one of 41 long listed in the Oscars category, which will be whittled down to five when the full nominations are announced in January. Other pop artists nominated for Best Song include Janet Jackson and Alanis Morissette. Coldplay are presently in the studio working on the fifith album, and while 'Me And Tennessee' was written on his own, Chris said he likes the brutal honesty his other band members - guitarist Johnny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion - show when he presents them with his lyrics.

He said: "Jonny's delightful, he's the easiest to convince. It's when you have to take a verse to Guy or Will that things become very tearful. You can forget there are other people in the world. I'm so lucky that we have that group, in as much as there are a lot of people who don't like us in the world, but there would be a lot more without this filtering system. Think of the rubbish that doesn't get out, if you don't like the stuff that does."

Coldplay have now confirmed the concert together with Jay-Z on New Year's Eve, at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas resort to see in 2011 we can reveal. Chris Martin and Will Champion confirmed the show during the interview with Radio 1's Fearne Cotton in the Live Lounge earlier today. You can discuss this event at the Coldplay Live forum now.

The event is being organised by celebrity party planner Colin Cowie and will be invite only with no tickets being put on general sale to the public. Guests will be treated to separate sets from Coldplay and Jay-Z before the two acts take to the stage together. Beyonce Knowles is also said to be planning to perform in Las Vegas on the same night so she can be with her husband to celebrate the landmark date.

Chris Martin has joked that their new album sounds like tango meets X Factor winner Matt Cardle. Coldplay's frontman spoke about the album during a special appearance on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge this morning (December 17th) to perform their festive single 'Christmas Lights'. Earlier this week, Chris spoke to BBC and said the follow-up to 2008’s 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' was a concept record. But appearing on the radio today he played down the comments, adding (with tongue in cheek): "We don’t know what it is at the minute. It’s like tango meets Matt Cardle, if you can imagine. You heard it here first."

It's a natural progression from the band's last album - and they have retained the same cast of producers and engineers. Chris and Will also said they didn't know what the album would be called and claimed it was not as bad as some people might expect.

As previously reported on, the band are due to play two intimate concerts in aid of the homeless charity Shelter in Liverpool on December 18 and Newcastle on December 20.

Reading through the latest articles on Coldplay's concept album news, we've come across an interesting set of stats based on Coldplay's Last.fm trends, courtesy of KROQ. The band have amassed almost 200m scrobbles since Parachutes.

With just four albums the band have still managed to rack up an enormous 174,927,900 scrobbles spread across 3,272,423 listeners (that’s an average of 53 scrobbles per listener). 2005's X&Y has proved to be their most popular album to date, taking in 31,055,432 scrobbles, narrowly piping 2002′s sophomore album A Rush of Blood to the Head which has 30,360,549 scrobbles.

2008′s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, despite being home to Coldplay’s most scrobbled track (“Viva La Vida” with 8,752,315 scrobbles), comes in at third with 25,320,204 scrobbles, although we may see it rise to the top over time.

The recent Christmas single, Christmas Lights, which was released on November 30th with an accompanying video, has already gained 104,002 scrobbles and has entered the band’s weekly top tracks, coming in at #9 this week with 12,171 listeners.

As announced first via Coldplay's Messenger this evening, the official site has confirmed details of a live photo and video blog from Liverpool and Newcastle from this Sunday (and Monday) with the official behind-the-scenes view at the two hidden Crisis gigs. Hello Mat, how are you?

Good thanks, just on my way to watch the band at Top Of The Pops.

Well, congratulations on the video.

Aw, thank you.

When did you first hear you were doing it?

Phil rang me, probably about a month before we shot it. He just said, "We don't know exactly what we're going to do yet, but I think we want something very low key for this. We're busy on the album, so it's got to be something small." And then I spoke to Chris and he said, "Really, I just want you to come along and we'll walk along Oxford Street and you can film us with a Handycam. Really simple."

And then from that little acorn…

Exactly! It was supposed to be a tiny little video. And then after a couple of days, Chris suggested doing something like the Beatles' video for All You Need Is Love, with a lot of friends and family in the studio, doing something which wasn't too obviously Christmassy, and not too cheesy. Just something which was fun and felt like it was a kind of family Christmas event.

What happened to that idea?

Well, then they talked to the techies in the studio and they pointed out that the band are right in the middle of making an album and everything's set up how they like it, so it could disrupt the flow of the recording. So, then we thought about finding another studio to do it in.

But that didn't happen either?

No. That was when Will mentioned that he'd been to Willesden Music Hall before and that he loved that as a venue. He suggested we did it there, so that it felt more like something on stage, with a nice Christmas vibe. But all the music halls around town were booked up, for Christmas. And then they suggested getting Misty Buckley involved.

What was her role?

She's this incredible designer. She did the Take That Circus tour and she does Glastonbury every year. She's sickeningly young and talented. So she came in and we sat down and tried to work out what we could do without being able to book a music hall, and we came up with the idea of building our own music hall and putting it in a really interesting location. And that was the start of the video that it became.

And that decision was made with just a few weeks to go?

Yeah, this is with three weeks left. Misty was right in the middle of several other things and I was finishing off something too. And it still wasn't definite at this point. So Chris said we should all come into the Bakery and have a chat about it with the band, and we started brainstorming and watching things online and Misty showed us some of her designs. The band got really excited and said, "Yes! This is what we're definitely going to do. Let's start from tomorrow."

The band were quite involved in it all, then?

Yes, that's what's great about working with Coldplay. Whenever I've worked with them, they'll brainstorm and have hundreds of ideas and then you just try and take the best ones and put them into the video. So Chris would just come out with these ideas. Like he'd ring me up in the middle of the night and say, "I really want there to be three Elvises playing strings, in jumpsuits." I thought he was joking. And then two weeks later, there they were!

What other ideas did Chris have?

Well, it was his idea to be lying on the floor next to the piano as the beginning of the video. And he wanted some kind of illusion quite early on. So we got in touch with this illusionist. He suggested a few things - some of which just didn't work with our one shot idea - and we ended up kind of using the levitation idea. I think Chris's starting point was that we wanted to do everything live and real as much as possible, and to try and do it as one shot if we could.

And then you had to find a location.

Yes. We talked about doing it in tunnels under Waterloo, then Chris suggested doing it on a rooftop and we managed to secure the roof of John Lewis in Oxford Street. But then Chris thought it'd be good to do it by the river, to tie in with the line about where the sea and city meet. Then we got down to the South Bank - and this is now about five days before the shoot - and he loved it. So it'd gone from being this tiny little video we were going to shoot as mates walking down Oxford Street at midnight, to being something quite huge. That was great, but also borderline terrifying.

Was it a stressful experience?

Yeah, that would be a fair description! The band and the crew were absolutely lovely and patient, but it was one of the hardest shoots I've ever done. I think I probably put pressure on myself because they're friends, as well as people that you're working with. So, I was desperate not to let them down. It's always pressure when you're working on a film or music video with people who professionally you want to do a good job for, but when it's with mates, and they're trusting you with their money, you really don't want to cock it up!

It would've been awful if, after all that, the video was rubbish.

Oh God, it would've been horrible. When we finished that night, because it was such a complicated shoot and we were all freezing - particularly the band and the Elvises who weren't wrapped up - I really wasn't sure if we had it right. The band were incredibly patient, though. It was so cold. I think a lot of other bands would've just walked.

But you're pleased with the video?

Yeah, I really am. It's such a beautiful song, we just wanted to do it justice. But the response has been fantastic.

Chris was being very mysterious about the new album, BUT I do remember him joking about February 9th as a release date for Christmas Lights. I'm just wondering if this is a secret coded release of information for us very intrigued fans?? I hope so! :) Thanks, Chris

A couple of people have written in asking why Chris mentioned a February release date in radio interviews on the night Christmas Lights was released. Just to clear this up he was referring to the fact that Christmas Lights isn't a song that you can release at any other time of year, such as February. A few fans got excited thinking he was talking about the album; he wasn't. I guess this would be a good time to answer another question I was asked: "Is Christmas Lights inherently a love song with Christmas context or a Christmas song with love context?" I'd say it's the former and as it wasn't written for the next album it made sense to release it at the start of the festive season - although some shops seem to think that is in October...

Actually neither are right; I recall Harmless first being written during the A Rush of Blood to the Head recording sessions. It was certainly post-Parachutes and pre-X&Y.

Of course I know Elvis Presley sung lots of Christmas songs, but I answered him that it might have been a mistake in the transcription or reading of the video script: Maybe the script writer intended to show THREE ELVES (like Santa's helpers) and someone read THREE ELVIS??

Hahahahaha! That's funny! If you listen to the lyrics of the song - or you can read them here - you will hear (or see) there is actually an Elvis reference in the song so it's no mistake.

A few people have asked this and apparently the word on the street is that it was a single shot video. There might have only been one camera (to be confirmed) but I can assure you that the video was not filmed in just one take. They didn't 'wrap' until around 3 in the morning. FYI: For those who wish to know, 'wrap' is the term used when the final filming has taken place. My favourite example of the word being used is at 3 minutes 55 seconds in

Erm, not sure why you would think he should be. Ian was present at some sessions at Parr Street Studios during the recording of the album but he didn't produce or co-produce it.

Slightly concerned as there is no definite chance of actually getting in to see the show and I am travelling from quite far away. So I wondered how many are actually allowed in the audience? Congratulations. Yes this does seem to be a concern for many fans. It is usual for TV shows to oversubscribe as they like to make sure they have enough audience members; their approach is better to have too many and turn some away than not enough. I am pretty sure that was mentioned at the time of registering for tickets. To be perfectly honest even if you know how many people will be allowed in, it won't help as you don't know what time any other fans are planning on arriving... It is indeed a risky venture but if anyone is planning on getting there very early, please make sure you wrap up as it's bitterly cold.

This is the Top of the Pops Christmas special and will feature acts who have had singles out this year. Coldplay obviously weren't releasing this year due to their recording sessions but with the arrival of Christmas Lights came the invitation to perform on the show. So... that's a yes they will only be performing Christmas Lights and yes there will be other acts there.

I'm afraid not Laurene as this is a television show's taping; there will be a lot of activity on the day. It's quite an involved process with hectic goings on co-ordinating all the acts who will be performing. I'm sure you understand that this is a great opportunity to see the boys up close but there will be direction given from the television crew.

Lots of TOTP questions coming in... Whether from Devon or within London I expect everyone will be in the same situation so don't worry about that. I would also guess as with the majority of tv shows there will be a cloakroom system where you can check your belongings. I can assure you that you won't be expected to leave anything randomly lying around. I didn't attempt to get tickets but hey, I'm pretty sure I could go if I tried really hard ;)

Ha ha, a few people have been asking this. In the Christmas Lights video the words above the stage curtain say CREDO ELVEM ETIAM VIVERE. This means "I believe Elvis lives" in Latin.

Coldplay have announced their fourth festival headline slot of 2011 with the news that they will be playing in Poland for the very first time - at the Open'er Festival on Thursday 30th June. Here's what Anchorman had to say earlier: We're pleased to report that Coldplay will be heading to Poland in 2011 to headline the Heineken Open'er Festival in Gdynia, on the north coast of the country. The band will be performing on the opening night of the festival, Wednesday, 30th June. Weekend tickets for Open'er are on sale now, costing 370 PLN or 410 PLN with camping. Coldplay topped the bill for this year's Christmas Top Of The Pops with a one-off performance of their festive single, Christmas Lights, and will be seen when the show returns to BBC One on December 25.

The BBC audience included Coldplayers from the forum who were lucky enough not only to get tickets but to listen to Coldplay performing Christmas Lights four times. Here are some of their reviews...

They were great! Chris gave someone (from here I think) a flower and someone else got a plectrum from Mr Buckland. It was brilliant to see the boys so close and Chris was just chatting with the crowd and stuff. Chris sang live but the rest of the boys mimed. It was a great day tho and a brilliant experience! I forgot to mention there were snow cannons and some of the stuff from the video (piano, gramophone, etc.). They also wore the clothes from the video and Chris introduced Phil saying something like "this is Phil, he's in charge of our band. He's the fifth member of Coldplay" (Phil was one of the Elvis's). Just got back home from my afternoon at the BBC. Its well worth it, had a good chat to Phil before he got up on stage as on eof the violin playing Elvis's. I had the three Elvis's infront of me!!! As the band came of stage I shook hands with Chris and Johny!! Overall it was a good day. Plus we got to hear Christmas Lights live 4 times. Chris seemed in good spirits this afternoon!!Cracked a few jokes with us all! Im looking forward to Liverpool after todays little performance! The queue was over 300 people, some got turned away apparantly, but I thinks everyone from the forum managed to get in. [thanks Kris.W]

This was a really good experience - much better than the night on the Thames for me. I really enjoyed being able to see the band up and close (a first time for me), and they also seemed in very good spirits. It was a lot of fun. Chris continued to make me feel he could moonlight as a stand-up comedian. What he told everyone about the boat cruise was hilarious - something to the effect of, "lots of drugs. just a massive orgy. some of the spice girls showed up as well". I nearly died laughing. Everyone else in the band looked good. Jonny and Will seemed in good spirits. Guy seemed like himself - haha. I'm so glad I was able to make it (or rather chose to miss lecture to make it...). Had such a great day after such an early start. We left home at 6:30 and got to the BBC at 8:15, no idea why we got there so early but we were fortunate to be first in the queue (numbers 1 and 2). Which mean't we were first into the studio and we got a spot right at the front; directly infront of Chris. We had our Christmas Lights Glowing and our Sparkly Trees on our heads; When the band came on stage everyone went crazy; Chris asked if anyone was in the video - I spoke up and said I was he then said it was good fun with lots of drugs and some of the spice girls, they then began to sing the song...but OMG he was right in front of me, less than 2 feet away. I have been fortunate to meet him in person before; but nothing can beat being that close to him and watching him perform, just mesmerising. Had a total awesome fangirl moment, Chris asked me if his collar on his shirt was straight; I said its a little up, he then bent down and asked me to straighten it for him, which I gladly did. Had so much fun being right there; singing away and dancing to the song; but i'm dreading seeing myself on camera on Christmas Day. I got a little annoyed when people kept asking for things; especially Will's drum sticks even before they began to shot the performance, I felt like saying "well how is he mean't to play the drums without them." I just don't get people, we got to see them upclose for free, what more could people possible need other than that....or is that just me?? [thanks piggy]

I always said Chris has a second career as a stand-up comic, I always find him hilarious anyway. Did u hear what one of the old bags coming in to see Question of Sport said of us as we were all waiting for our coats? "Here are the unemployed... or they're in property". yeah love, my portfolio's £3bn these days and I was sick of counting money so I thought I'd come and see Coldplay this afternoon. Yes I got the picture to Jonny - I always thought it was going to be a long shot, especially after the lady controlling everyone on the way in said "we don't give things to the band, you'll have to see if someone in the studio will". Glad they got it. everyone here I spoke today said they had a great time. [thanks Long Live Life]

That was a really great day!! I got there at about 9.30am, ended up being no. 34 in the queue. Met Phil and Laura and we froze for those few hours!! Met Chelsea and Daniel too....After a bit of an extended wait and a lady who had to contend with a load of overexcited Coldplay fans, we were let loose on the route towards the studio. I havn't been inside the BBC buildings before and it was really great to see everything. I was so happy to make it to the front row where me, Laura and Phil ended up on the Guy's side. Everyone was in a good mood and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! The stage was nicely decorated, although I was surprised to discover that the 'snow' was made of pieces of old newspaper hahaha!! When Coldplay arrived, there was an awesome atmosphere because they were so very very close! All the guys seemed to be in a good mood and bantering with the crowd. I think I got a smile from Will at one point when he was looking in my direction and I smiled at him....but who knows, he could have been smiling at someone behind me. Me and Phil had to make way several times for Fearne and Reggie.... that was interesting. and yeah, that was Phil passing Jonny the group photograph that he'd had printed out! i got there at 9:30 and was number 27!! best day of my life. chris came right in front of me and stared at me for a few seconds . best moment of my life. Also at the end i put my hand out to jonny and he smiled and shook my hand!!!!! wont ever get an experience like that ever again! [thanks izzym]

Today was completely flawless. I wasn't expecting it to be as amazing as it was, to be honest, even though I was expecting to have a good time. But wow, I just had such a great day overall. Oh my GOD, what a FANTASTIC DAY. I'll post a full review to my LiveJournal later, because if I do it here I'll just harp on for ages, but suffice to say that it was so much better than I could ever have expected it to be. It had such a cozy, intimate feeling, almost like a house concert or something. Chris' voice sounded amazing, I thought, and they all just looked really happy. It was great to watch, especially from a foot away from the stage. My mad flailing/fairy lights elicited a smile out of Jonny and--dare I say it--what might even have been a smirk out of Guy?! And I got a handshake from Chris! *faints* But the other thing I -loved- was the feeling of community...I met some of the other Coldplayers, you are all lovely, by the way. It was like some massive, dysfunctional family gathering. Well, that's what it felt like to me anyway. xD It was just lovely. I have warm fuzzies all over. [thanks englishrose]

Coldplay entered the UK singles charts with their new festive track Christmas Lights, which landed at 18th place, following its release on iTunes last Wednesday. This chart position is based on digital sales only as there was no physical release available to buy. It is important to note that they broke the top 20 with only three full days of sales - a good result.

Meanwhile in the iTunes charts, Christmas Lights reached no.1 in Portugal, Spain, Finland and Greece so far, recording top ten positions in several other countries, including the UK and US. More discussion on the singles and iTunes charts at the Coldplay forum here onwards.

Contestants from the UK talent show The X Factor topped the singles charts for a second week running on Sunday, while festive music fans sent two classic Christmas hits back into the UK top 40. The charity single cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" by the X Factor Finalists 2010 shot to number one last week.

Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" led the seasonal favourites at number 22 in the singles chart, up from 48 last week. "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl charted at number 27.

Q. What did you mean when you said that Christmas Lights wasn't 'penned for the new album' in a response to Peter from Ireland? I looked through Coldplay's release history, and with the exception of the Parachutes album, a brand new single has only been released a month or less before a new album. This makes me think, "well hey Coldplay will have their album out for Christmas!" (And they better if they value my happiness.) I realize you couldn't tell us even if you did know when the next album comes out, but I just wanted to know what you meant in your other response. Thanks! :)

Can I categorically say here and now that Christmas Lights is a stand alone song and has absolutely no bearing on what is to follow. Nor is it any indication of any kind as to when the album will be released. Please don't treat it as any previous single which is usually a prelude to an album; this is not the case. Yes Peter the idea for the song started a while ago and there were snippets of it available on the Internet e.g YouTube via video/interview footage. The song isn't penned for the new album however; it's just a single release that happens to be out this week - "cannot wait" - that we've had teasers of over the past year or so.

London: Coldplay have said there were bad vibes within the band as they concluded their 2009 Viva La Vida world tour. Speaking to Radio 1's Zane Lowe lead singer last night, Chris Martin said: "When we came back from America last time we had some bad stuff happening in our group."

He went on to add that the band are currently working on songs for their as yet untitled fifth album in 2011. "We're going for it. We regard this as our last big shot," he said. "We had a lot of songs and we cut a lot of songs. It's quite brutal - especially if you're the person which brings the songs. Now we're close to what the album might be."

Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland were speaking as they released new single Christmas Lights on iTunes (1 December). Talking about the song Chris said: "We had to pluck up a lot of courage but the problem is that we really like it so that's why we had to put it out. Not to be arrogant - it's not our worst song."

Chris Martin joked that the song was the "end of our career". This Christmas, Coldplay will be playing two special sold out shows for the Crisis charity in Liverpool and Newcastle on 19 and 20 of December.

The Telegraph were the first media source to review the new single. They positively wrote: "But the big one is surely Coldplay’s much anticipated return with “Christmas Lights” (which will be released on iTunes today at 8pm). If anyone can craft an old fashioned Christmas anthem, it’s Chris Martin, and he is taking no prisoners. Like The Killers offering, the mood is caught between doubt and reverie, but when the chorus gets going it brings to mind the ageless folkiness of Paul McCartney’s Mull Of Kintyre. “May all your troubles soon be gone,” sings Martin, to ringing pianos and swooning strings...

“Oh Christmas lights, keep shining on.” It may be formulaic and sentimental, but it has a real warmth and spirit to it, a kind of log fire singalong quality that makes it first real contender for Christmas classic status that I have heard in many years. It is, in keeping with the spirit of the age, a strictly non secular Christmas record. The band perform in a theatre, beneath the Latin inscription, Credo Elvem Etiam Vivere… which translates as I Believe Elvis Lives.

The American Songwriter website wrote: While a recent study shows that the least amount of breakups occur on Christmas, a December 25 split is the subject of Coldplay’s new holiday song. “Christmas Lights” follows a freshly-single narrator remembering the reason for the season by going to Oxford Street, London’s largest shopping district. Spoiler alert: there is no solace to be found in shop windows, because “when you’re still waiting for the snow to fall, it doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all.”

The video features the band performing in front of a vaguely Méliès/Smashing Pumpkins/The Mighty Boosh-like backdrop of the moon. Violin-playing Elvis impersonators sashay across a velvet-curtained stage, and the morose lyrics are counterbalanced by large quantities of confetti, balloons, and pyrotechnics. Considering that Martin sings “Got all kinds of poison in my blood,” we can only hope that Santa doesn’t bring young Apple and Moses any toys with lead-based paints.

Meanwhile, Just Jared, the website that was one of the first to capture photos of Coldplay recording the video and also the people on the Erasmus boat, said: "We adore everything about this video — from the colorful piano to the the “waves” and the balloons to fireworks! 'Still waiting for the snow to fall,” Chris Martin croons. “It doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all.'"

UPDATE: Coldplay have now confirmed the two festivals below, as well as confirming their headline slot at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil as was rumoured on Coldplaying two weeks ago. [thanks SarahSchimidt]

According to European radio and newspaper sources (and now the official site) today, Coldplay will be headlining the Rock Werchter and Pinkpop Landgraaf festivals in Belgium and Netherlands respectively, around June 2011. Pinkpop's organisers have set a date of Saturday June 11th, and according to the Metro newspaper, festival organiser Jan Smeets said: "It is still unclear what form the concert will take - they want a second stage somewhere on the field." Coldplay last played in 2009 in the Netherlands when they played two concerts in Goffertpark in Nijmegen. The presale for Pinkpop 2011 starts on Saturday, March 19.

Meanwhile Rock Wercheter have announced on their website that Coldplay are the main act on Saturday, July 2nd. Rock Werchter 2011 will take place at Werchter's Festival Park from Thursday June 30 to Sunday July 3. Tickets for Rock Werchter 2011 go on sale on Saturday December 4 at 9am. Coldplay's fifth album is due out in 2011, but no other details have been announced. We do expect that the band will support the release with a world tour. Already, they’re confirmed to headline the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Germany. More details concerning, well, everything once they become available.

Sir Elton John has called Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher a pair of "stupid sods" after they wasted an opportunity to break America, then contrasted their lack of success to Coldplay's US breakthrough.

The Manchester band, who split last year, attempted to take their music stateside in the mid-90s, but the bid ended acrimoniously. "They were enormous in Britain, they were enormous in America and they went over there and argued between themselves and cancelled the tour and they never broke America," Sir Elton said. "You only get it once, and if you blow it, it's gone. You can't not regret that. I always thought, 'You stupid sods. You'll never get that opportunity again'."

Speaking on Absolute Radio, Sir Elton also suggested that Oasis were just “boys” compared to bands like Coldplay or The Police.

"It's only the cream that rises to the top. It's always the ones with the best work ethic and the best material and the best attitude," he said. "You know, it's the boys from the men. Coldplay, Muse, U2, Police, all those bands. They're the men, and all the rest are boys."

After Coldplay filmed the video for their new single, Christmas Lights (out Wednesday December 1st), they released some short behind-the-scenes films from the video shoot. You can watch all three parts on Coldplay's Ping profile, now. For those who haven't got Ping, or iTunes, or even an iPhone etc etc you can watch the video via YouTube instead.

Meanwhile the tour rumourmill has begun in earnest - according to Coldplayer MrsMartin333, security in and around some New York/New Jersey venues have been told that Coldplay are due to play the Red Bull arena in Newark, NJ, in June 2011. This would be as part of a bigger tour, not a one off date. If this news is true, we can expect at least a US tour around early summer next year. Furthermore, it is believed that Coldplay will be announcing those new dates this week (possibly Monday 29th Nov) - but bear in mind this is not confirmed yet. Keep checking the official site to see if we get those dates this week!

Also in the news, Chris Martin has compared being asked to play Glastonbury to Twilight actor Robert Pattinson inviting you to touch his balls. He said: "That’s like getting asked to dance by Robert Pattinson if you’re a young girl. Imagine if Robert Pattinson called and asked, 'Do you want to touch my balls?'."

Coldplay, who last topped the bill at the festival in 2005, are one of a number of acts rumoured to be headlining the event in Somerset next June. In this interview with Q magazine, singer Chris Martin played down the reports and said it "depends if we get asked".

Coldplay tried to keep the location of the video for their festive single a secret - but were found out when they picked a Thames barge, The Sun writes today. But it was the Daily Mail who were first to let slip the full details on the new Coldplay video, which is due for release on Wednesday.

They wrote on Friday into Saturday: Coldplay treated fans to a sneak peek of the new track yesterday as they filmed the video on the South Bank of the River Thames. The band performed the song surrounded by old instruments on a theatre–inspired stage complete with red velvet curtains and flashing lights. Aboard a boat on the water a group of people were lit up holding balloons which were then released en mass into the night’s sky. The lads also had a troupe of violin-playing Elvises providing a magical, surreal theatre show with loads of tricks packed in like fireworks, levitation, a 100-strong chorus on a riverboat and Simon Pegg.

Website Suite 101 also added that Coldplay invited one hundred lucky fans to be part of the video and sing a small portion of their new song. The loyal one hundred flew to London from all over the globe for this special boat trip across the River Thames and an exclusive first listen to the much anticipated new track from Coldplay. The devoted fans gladly braved the blistery winter chill on the outdoor boat deck holding balloons in the air which were to be released whilst singing in a choir-like fashion.

Meanwhile if you haven't already read, amidst growing speculation on the new album content Chris Martin spoke to Q magazine about the inspiration behind it being his admiration for "Anybody who's standing up for themselves. Being able to speak out or follow your passion, even if everybody seems against it," as seen in the 70s graffiti art of New York and the White Rose movement of Germany during World War II, he says. "I've spent a lot of my life playing it a bit safe or conforming to something, even though I didn't agree with it. So I have respect and admiration for people who don't," he told Q.

On Friday, Chris Martin revealed further details on the soon-to-be-finished new record to the UK national paper The Sun, such as the song 'Hurts Like Heaven' which he described as "all Jonny" referring the featured sound of Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland. "It only has two chords," said Martin. "The songs are group-y, it's guitar-y. Jonny is coming out of his cocoon. We're just trying some risky things," Martin told The Sun. Other song titles include 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and "Up With the Birds".

The Christmas single comes ahead of their previously announced concerts next month, two of which are charity gigs for the UK homeless charity Crisis where they will play in Liverpool and Newcastle on the 19th and 20th. Coldplay will also perform a special invite-only New Year's Eve joint concert with rapper Jay-Z in Las Vegas on the 31st of December. 'Christmas Lights' is out on December 1.

Further to yesterday's new Q article revealing the inspiration behind Coldplay's fifth album being old school American graffiti and anti-Nazi movements, Chris Martin has been speaking to The Sun about some of the tracks within said album. Chris said: "We're hungry and very fired up. In five years we'll be in our late 30s. You have to have your best work done by then. I'm trying to make sure there are three songs that start with the same letter. On the last album it was L. It might be U this time. One of them is Up With The Birds. It might be a duet, but we don't know who with yet."

Aside from song titles beginning with the letter U, Chris revealed there are tracks slated for inclusion on the album including 'Hurts Like Heaven' and 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', which will likely be the album closer. Describing the sound, Chris added that guitarist Jonny Buckland is coming into his own. He said: "'Hurts Like Heaven' is all Jonny. It only has two chords. The songs are group-y, its guitar-y. Johnny is coming out of his cocoon. We're just trying some risky things."

Q. Hello Lovely Oracle of the Internet! I was wondering if Coldplay's song Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground inspired Life in Technicolor one and two. Thank you all knowing one!

The song's title appears as a lyric in LiT ii but neither "inspired" the other; it's a recurring theme. It's actually a common saying and fans note that even back in 1998 the band recorded No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground so it's not unfamiliar territory.

Q. Can anybody hire a recording studio for a morning or something and record some music of their own? Is it expensive? BTW have you heard and do you like the new Take That album? Have Coldplay heard it? What do you, and they, think of it if you/they have heard it?

The Oracle replies:

Recording studios are for hire that's how they function as a business so you can hire them. I wouldn't advise anyone to hire one unless they know exactly how they're going to use the time as it doesn't come cheap. You'd have to find out rates directly from the studio as they can vary but the cheapest times are usually through the night - if you have your own sound engineer. Also remember that you may need to pay for extras so be sure to ask as the fee may not be inclusive. I haven't heard the TT album yet but do know the band have and like it!

Q. Hoping you can help with a question: what exactly does a band do during the interim between show and encore? You know, the time when we as the audience are cheering and clapping like crazy, pretending that we think the show is over. What is going on backstage? Drinking copious amounts of water to rehydrate? A jaunt to the bathroom? Finally finishing that poker (or ping pong) tournament? It's always been a mystery to me and I thought that maybe the powerful, beloved and wise oracle might be able to shed some light on the subject! :) Thanks for sharing your expertise!

Well Krista, all the above apart from finishing any sporting tournament - there isn't time for that! Depending on which band, there could be a beer and/or cigarette involved, a change of clothes/costume, reapplying of make-up (Coldplay don't do that one of course) or simply waiting for the moment to go back on stage for the encore. I have seen bands look out from the back of the stage and soak up that incredible energy; it's truly electric.

Hi I've been single for two years after a long term relationship ended. I was hurt badly and don't know if I can trust a man again. I don't think I'm ready to settle down but 3 weeks ago I met a guy I really like. He told me he isn't looking for a girlfriend, just fun. I thought it could be a perfect arrangement. We've tried to meet up 3 times since but he has cancelled because of work. I was really upset by the let down and realise I struggle with disappointment. It's hard work already but I really want to see him again. Shall I be patient or just cut my losses and run? Bernie.

So, neither Wedding Bells nor that "story kind of thing" (of which Wedding Bells is the beginning, as Chris explained on the Apple Keynote Event) will be part of the next album, right? Not sure how your logic worked that out fella. Wedding Bells has not been released so it's not ruled out for inclusion on the 5th album; it's certainly been considered. Although that implies it will be on the album that's not necessarily the case either. Sorry for being cryptic but as you may know we don't generally reveal tracklistings until the album has been completed.

Q. Hello there! I had heard from a bird that there was a special ten year anniversary album coming out (hopefully) by the end of this year. It's getting close and I'm curious... Was that just a rumor or is it amazingly true?? Thanks!

Wow another rumour. Gosh where do they come from I wonder? This one is not true at all either. The only album the band are working on is their 5th studio album and there are and never have been any plans to release a ten year anniversary record.

Q. Hey! El Caro, I was just wondering, I came across this old interview with Chris and Jonny and Chris was talking about his hand. He was explaining how his hand represents his life. Then he said he will get a "A" tattoo on his hand for his daughter. Did he get it yet :)? And if he did, can we see a picture?

Q. Kind Oracle, I am surprised to read that the band will borrow an instrument for a performance. Each instrument feels and responds differently. I can see using an unknown piano with an hour of practice, but I would think a guitar would be difficult switch out - if you are used to a certain depth of neck and all of the sudden you have to perform on something narrower, it would throw you off some. Maybe the guys are so far beyond that level that you could hand them a cigar box with rubber bands and they would make it work. How common is borrowing an instrument?

The instrument in question was borrowed from one of their crew so it was not unfamiliar...

Chris Martin admits he's been "playing it a bit safe" for a large part of his life, while talking to Q magazine about the almost-finished fifth Coldplay album, due to be released in 2011. Chris said the lyrics on the band's next album are inspired by New York graffiti and the White Rose Movement - a group of German children in World War II who printed anti-Nazi flyers - and he admires people who speak out and express themselves in negative environments - admitting he's not always done that himself.

He told Q Magazine: "I admire it. I've spent a lot of my life playing it a bit safe or conforming to something, even though I didn't agree with it. So I have respect and admiration for people who don't. The ideas come from graffiti art of the 70s in New York, where people were expressing themselves with paint. Then there was the White Rose Movement. Anybody who's standing up for themselves. It's about being free to be yourself and to express yourself among negative surroundings. Being able to speak out or follow your passion, even if everybody seems against it."

Coldplay are presently in the studio in London, recording their fifth album, and although they are still considering what the title will be, Chris gave a hit away. He added: "I don't want to say about the title. It will probably begin with an 'M'. Two words."

Coldplay have today been confirmed to headline Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Germany next June, the official site has announced today. Below is the official news release. Discussion on this new festival date has already started in the Coldplay Live forum now [thanks r25d01].

We're very pleased to announce Coldplay's first confirmed shows for 2011. The band will headline Germany's Rock am Ring and Rock in Park festivals, which take place over the weekend of June 3-5th, 2011. Rock am Ring is based at the Nürburgring racetrack in the west of Germany, while Rock in Park happens at in Nuremberg, in the south of Germany. Weekend tickets, including camping and parking, currently cost 150 Euros each (the ticket price will go up on Jan 15). Day tickets are not available. The presales begins today, for a week, via www.seat.de/rock-am-ring and www.seat.de/rock-im-park. The general sale then kicks off next Monday (29th November) via www.eventim.de/. Other bands confirmed for the event include Kings Of Leon, The Gaslight Anthem and Mando Diao. We have a special announcement of a Coldplay HQ/Coldplaying boat trip next week in London, on either 25th or 26th November. Here is the official annoucement from Coldplay HQ directly to us:

Dear Coldplaying, In recognition of your support for Coldplay throughout 2010 (and long before that!) we'd like to take 100 of your members (50 pairs) on a Festive Boat Trip in London next week. As well as cruising along the Thames, you'll get to have Q&As with Coldplay's creative director and fifth member, Phil Harvey and with two of Coldplay's touring crew (Matthew Miller and Matt McGinn). We also have a few special surprises up our sleeves for the evening.

The trip will take place on the evening of either Thu November 25th or Fri November 26th. Unfortunately, we may not know until the beginning of next week which date it will be (because of one of our surprises...), so anyone wishing to come will need to commit to being free on both nights. This means if anyone comes from outside London or UK, they will need to be staying in London on both the Thursday and Friday night...

We expect the boat to board at around 6pm in central London, and disembark at the same location around 11.30pm (fans should plan their journeys home for that time - and, in case of delay, later). Refreshments will be provided. Please dress up warm as it could well be quite chilly. We will only be able to take Coldplay fans over the age of 16 on the boat trip - with anyone aged 16 or 17 needing to be accompanied by someone over the age of 18.
