Grammys: Coldplay Win 'Best Rock Album' For Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends

Coldplay won the 'Best Rock Album' For Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends at today's Grammy Awards, making it three Grammys so far.

"We're not, of course, the heaviest of rock bands -- you may have noticed," frontman Chris Martin said. "We're kind of the limestone of rock bands. Not as hard, but still charming."

There was also some reunion news during the broadcast. Before presenting Coldplay with best rock album, the members of Blink 182 announced they were getting back together after a four-year hiatus. "We used to play music together, and we decided we're going to play music together again," said drummer Travis Barker, still with his arm in a sling following his survival of a deadly plane crash last year.

Grammys: Coldplay Win 'Song of the Year' For Viva la Vida

Coldplay won the song of the year award at the 51st Grammys on Sunday for their hit "Viva La Vida."

It was the second award of the evening for the group after they had earlier picked up the best pop performance by a duo or group for the same track. "Viva La Vida" -- taken from the album of the same name -- was Coldplay's first US number one single. "Thank you and sorry for blatantly recycling the Sergeant Pepper album," Coldplay drummer Will Champion said after collecting the award, in comments directed at Beatles legend Paul McCartney, sitting in the audience. Coldplay had earlier warmed up the awards show with a live performance of "Viva La Vida," appearing alongside Jay-Z at the Staples Center.

The band is also hoping to snaffle Grammys in the record of the year and the coveted album of the year awards revealed later today.

Coldplay have won the first of seven possible Grammy Awards, coming in the category 'Best Pop Performance by Group' for their single Viva la Vida. Phil Harvey has just twittered: best pop performance by group for viva la vida - at least we're not going home empty handed :-)

George Carlin won best comedy album Grammy for "It's Bad for Ya," a recording of his last HBO special. It was the late comedian's fifth Grammy Award. His daughter, Kelly, accepted on his behalf, saying she'd take better care of it than Carlin did with his first Grammy -- which was taken apart in a "chemically induced, altered state," she said. Other winners included the film "Juno," which won best compilation soundtrack; Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman, who won best motion picture song for "Down to Earth" from the film "WALL-E"; and R&B singer Ne-Yo, who won two awards.

With 110 categories, most of the honors are given out in advance of the show, which airs 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Coldplay Turn Grammy Rehearsals Into Comedy Show

If Coldplay were nervous about playing the Grammys with the likes of U2, Radiohead and Paul McCartney, it wasn't apparent at the band's performance rehearsal. During the practice run of their collaboration with Jay-Z, frontman Chris Martin, wearing a "Barack to the Future" shirt, enteratined the Staples Center crowd of friends, family and media with somke stand-up humor.

In an announcer accent, Martin joked, "Welcome to 'American Idol.'" "I would never make it on 'Americal Idol,'" he quipped. "I don't have the cheekbones. I would have to hide behind my band." Despite the several run throughs, he was apparently not satisfied. "Thanks, we didn't pass the auditions," he joked at the end of the set.

Drummer Will Champion told Spinner that if they couldn't joke around at the Grammys, they couldn't anywhere. "I look at these events as a chance to hang out with people," Champion says. "It can often be very insular in music, or even being in a band. So it's a great opportunity to hang out with somebody like [Foo Fighters frontman] Dave Grohl."

Coldplay to Play Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi (Dubai) on 28th March 2009

If you’ve never missed the Dubai World Cup, but are also a devotee of the band Coldplay - you’re faced with a major dilemma this year. Coldplaying can reveal that Coldplay will hit the stage at the Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi, on March 28th.

The world’s biggest-selling musical act for 2008 has confirmed they are heading to the region for the first time as part of their current world tour. Just two days before the band vie for seven Grammy awards, frontman Chris Martin said he was looking forward to playing in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi and urged fans to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment. "It will be amazing and we can’t wait," he said when contacted by tabloid! on the weekend. Live Nation, who are flying the boys in following their final tour dates in Australia, said the concert would be a highlight of the music offerings in 2009. Organised in conjunction with Flash, the company behind successful gigs including Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi and Elton John, the concert is predicted to sell out - a total of 15,000 tickets - in record time…

Coldplay to Perform 'Viva La Vida' With Jay-Z at Grammys! (Backstage news)

Coldplay will be performing a duet performance of single Viva La Vida with Jay-Z, according to the Canadian Press today. They report:

Sir Paul McCartney played a couple of covers and indulged the small crowd on hand in a lengthy jam, while Coldplay frontman Chris Martin cracked jokes and hung around afterwards to pose for pictures the night before Sunday's show.

Chris Martin was good-humoured in his dealings with the crowd. Sitting at a piano on a circular stage in the middle of the Staples Center auditorium, he noodled around on the keys while waiting for the go-ahead from producers. "I'm just trying to show off my skills," said Martin, whose band has seven nominations - second only to New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne. He was joined at the piano by New York rapper Jay-Z, who dropped a verse then faded away as Martin joined his Coldplay bandmates onstage for 'Viva La Vida.' Though Martin was troubled by the mix - "sounds very strange," he said - he kept the session casual.

Edmonton Sun: Coldplay Snubs The West Again

After originally scheduling and then cancelling dates in Western Canada last year, and leaving Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg out of the loop, Coldplay is returning to North America for a 14-date tour in July and August.

And again Western Canada is not in the cards, report the Edmonton Sun. The tour, in support of the band's Viva La Vida album, begins on July 10 in Portland, Oregon with stops in California, Texas and the Midwest before hitting Eastern Canada in July. The tour concludes Aug. 9 in Tampa. In an interview with Sun Media last July, Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland said the Western Canada dates would mostly likely be slotted for early 2009 and were the only dates being planned. But the group instead is mounting a Japanese tour starting next week in Tokyo. "I've got quite a lot of family in Calgary and they would be very disappointed if we didn't play there," he said.

Coldplay To Perform Lost+ Duet (feat. Jay-Z) at Grammy Awards?

The clearest indication yet that Coldplay will be performing a duet with Jay-Z at Sunday's Grammy Awards has come courtesy of arjanwrites music blog.

Today, Radiohead (with USC marchind band), Coldplay (with Jay-Z) and U2 are rehearsing. U2 will open the show tomorrow with their new single. Unfortunately, all of these bands have explicity requested that no audience, media and Academy staff members are at their rehearsals, so I can give you updates about that. But Radio will be super cool no matter what.

Coldplay Makes Dutch Chart History With Single 'Viva La Vida'

Coldplay are making history on the Dutch music charts this week with a single considered their biggest hit ever which was released 6 months ago.

Coldplay have reached a record-equalling 30 weeks in the dutch Top 40 single charts which they've accomplished with their single Viva La Vida. Coldplay are currently tied with (I can't get no) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones, and Only A fool by Mighty Sparrow. Should Coldplay stay in the charts for another week, Viva La Vida will be officially recorded as one of the top 10 longest charted singles of all time in the Netherlands. Viva La Vida held the no.1 position for three weeks.

One can only wonder what Joe Satriani makes of this record. Satriani filed a copyright infringement suit in Los Angeles on December 4, one day after Coldplay was nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including record of the year for "Viva La Vida". He is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Coldplay nominated for 'International Album Of The Year' at Danish Music Awards

Coldplay have been nominated at the Danish Music Awards 2009, to be held on 28th February at Glassalen I Tivoli in Copenhagen.

The ceremony is being organised by the Danish IFPI (the phonographic industry that promotes, safeguards and organises the music releases worldwide) and Coldplay are up for the award Årets Udenlandske Album (International Album of the Year) for their fourth album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends.

Also competing in this category alongside Coldplay are For Emma, Forever Ago of Imma, Only By The Night of Kings Of Leon, Third of Portishead and Santogold by Santogold.

Watch Coldplay's '60 Minutes' Preview Videos (feat. Chris Martin)

In between hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's first interview with Katie Couric on 60 Minutes this Sunday, and Andy Rooney bitching about why his socks won't stay up, Steve Kroft interviews Chris Martin of Coldplay.

Like Sullenbereger, Chris doesn't do much press. In fact, during Kroft's visit to the band's studio in England, Chris shows Coldplay's top secret list of rules posted next to their white board ("6. Always keep the mystery. Not many interviews."). Martin waxes poetic on a slew of topics, reflects on his popularity and does that self-deprecating schtick that rich English people always seem to do: "I can't dance like Usher," Martin says. "I can't sing like Beyonce. I can't write songs like Elton John, but we can do the best we can with what we've got."

Kroft is a respected journalist known for getting to the heart of a story, but will he ask about Joe Satriani's very public allegation of song theft?

Elbow to Support Coldplay on New North American Tour

Coldplay's Twitter has just announced that Elbow will be one of the bands supporting Coldplay during the recently announced North American tour. Here's Anchorman: North America support acts announced. One of them is Elbow (hurrah!). Anchorman

Amadou & Mariam will support from Portland (10th July) to Maryland Heights, MO (24th July), Elbow will support from East Troy, WI (25th July) to Tampa, FL (9th August) and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis will support for the entire tour, as the opening act.

Coldplay will kick off a North American summer tour July 10 at the Amphitheater at Clark County in Portland, Ore. So far, 14 dates are set through early August, with more to be announced. Tickets for concerts in San Diego, Toronto, Charlotte, N.C. and Raleigh, N.C., go on sale Feb. 13. Tampa, Fla., and Houston go up Feb. 21. All other dates go on sale Feb. 14.

Coldplay were recently nominated for four Brit awards - Best Album, Best Group, Best British Single and Best Live act - and for the latter two it is down to a public vote to decide the winner. Please make your vote count for Coldplay at the Brit Awards website here

Voting for the British Live Act (Supported by listeners of BBC Radio 2) opened at 00:01 GMT on Monday 2 February 2009 and closes at 17.00 GMT on 7 February 2009. There will be seven rounds of voting for the British Single category (supported by listeners of participating UK commercial radio Stations & The Sun): Round One (which runs from 00:01 on the 2 February 2009 to 17:00 on 6 February 2009), you can vote for your favourite single from the full list of 10 eligible singles nominated for the British Single Award. Coldplay Announce Massive North American Tour

Coldplay have announced details of a huge tour of North America, which will begin in Portland, Oregon on July 10th.

The tour will also include dates in California, Texas and Florida. The band have also promised that more shows, which will take place outside of North America, will be announced on Monday (February 9th). Tickets will go on sale for on February 14th in some states and February 21st in others.
