Coldplay's Charlie Brown featured on '2013 GRAMMY Nominees' album

In honuor of the upcoming GRAMMY awards show the Recording Academy is releasing a 22-track record featuring the nominees for this year’s Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album.

The album, out on January 22nd, features the Coldplay track Charlie Brown and tracks from other artists like Bruce Springsteen, The Black Keys, Gotye, Katy Perry, Frank Ocean, Hunter Hayes and Adele. A portion of the proceeds from each album will go to the MusiCares and the GRAMMY foundation. Winners for each category will be announced at the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards airing February 10 on CBS.

Fans who buy the album in stores or pre-order it at grammy.com will also receive an entry to win a trip to see the 2013 Grammys in person on Feb. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

A reminder that Coldplay landed two GRAMMY nominations, with Mylo Xyloto competing for best rock album and the song Charlie Brown battling for best rock performance, it was announced from various media sources, including Coldplay's official site. This takes Coldplay's total career GRAMMY nominations to 26. Mylo Xyloto co-producer Markus Dravs is also up for Producer of the Year. The 55th annual Grammy Awards are to be staged in Los Angeles on February 10th.

Few live albums present an accurate picture of what a live concert is really like, writes Altsounds in the latest online review of Coldplay's Live 2012 film. Johnny Cash achieved it with ‘At Folsom Prison’ and so did The Who with ‘Live at Leeds.’ The secret to success when releasing a concert in purely audio format is recording the entire thing; fan interaction, cheers and gasps of the crowd and leaving very little – if anything – out of the recording. Production needs to be skin-tight and it always helps if a band is seemingly designed for live purposes.

Can you remember before Coldplay released Mylo Xyloto and declared that they don’t care what the haters and critics thought about them? The attitude they held before the band softened to appearances on X-Factor and mainstream TV is still there in this live album and it quickly becomes clear as Martin belts out ‘Yellow’ early into the album that Coldplay with an attitude is so much more infectious than mainstream pleasing, goodie-two-shoes Coldplay.

Coldplay is probably one of few bands today that has to be seen to be believed but now you can actually hear them to be believed. Coldplay announced as 'most popular act' of the last decade on Last.fm

Last.fm is celebrating a decade of scrobbling with a data haul encompassing the last decade of music – and Coldplay have come out winners, it has been revealed by MusicWeek in the past few days.

Coldplay have been crowned as the most popular act on the platform over the last 10 years while Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit was the most popular track. British music dominated both artists and tracks of the last decade, with half of the Top 10 Best Artists of the Decade hailing from the UK.

Along with Coldplay, three other British acts – The Beatles, Radiohead and Muse - dominate the top spots on the list and seven of the Top 10 tracks are performed by British artists including Oasis, Kings of Leon and Muse. Despite the strong British presence on the list, Lady Gaga is the only solo artist to appear in the Top 10 Artists and Top 10 Songs list from the past decade.

Also of note, Pulp’s reunion in 2010 caused the biggest spike in scrobbles beating the likes of the Spice Girls, Led Zeppelin and The Police. Music fans went wild with excitement at the band’s reunion after 15 years apart. "We are really excited to be releasing such rich data about the last 10 years of music," said director of Product at Last.fm Steve Whilton. "We have been able to provide a unique and vivid insight into 10 years of music listening, with our listening history captured from over 600 music platforms and hardware devices across the world. Some of the highlights include the most listened to artists, the top loved tracks and the most deleted 'guilty pleasures' of the last decade."

Coldplay have landed two GRAMMY nominations, with Mylo Xyloto competing for best rock album and the song Charlie Brown battling for best rock performance, it has been announced today from various media sources, including Coldplay's official site. This takes Coldplay's total career GRAMMY nominations to 26. Mylo Xyloto co-producer Markus Dravs is also up for Producer of the Year. A number of other UK acts have been named in the 81 categories. Mumford & Sons are in the running for six Grammy awards including the best Americana album. Adele, who dominated this year's event in February with six wins, is only up for one award this time – best pop solo performance for a live version of Set Fire To The Rain.

Ed Sheeran is nominated for song of the year for The A Team, while Florence and The Machine could take two prizes for best pop group performance with Shake It Out and best pop vocal album with Ceremonials. Sir Paul McCartney is shortlisted for two prizes - best traditional pop vocal album for Kisses On The Bottom and best historical album for the reissue of Ram. Muse are up for best rock song with Madness and best rock album for The 2nd Law.

The Chemical Brothers are shortlisted for best dance/electronica album with Don't Think and Iron Maiden are in the running for the best hard rock/metal prize with the track Blood Brothers.

*Meanwhile, 2Day FM, the Australian radio station that hosted Coldplay's intimate concert and exclusive interview in Sydney only two weeks ago in their studios were successful in making a prank call (listen) posing as members of the royal family to the King Edward VII hospital in London where the Duchess of Cambridge was staying after being admitted with acute morning sickness on Monday.

Presenters from 2Day FM posed as the Queen, Prince Charles and the corgis barking in the background, convinced staff they were the royals, were connected to the duchess's private nurse in the early hours of Tuesday morning and given an update on her condition. The central London hospital said confidentiality was taken seriously and telephone protocols are under review. 2Day FM said it was surprised to be put through but "sincerely apologises".

In a statement, 2Day FM said it "sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by the inquiry. The radio segment was done with the best intentions, we're glad to hear Kate is doing well and we wish her all the best."

The presenters behind the call, Mel Grieg and Michael Christian, said: "We were very surprised that our call was put through, we thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents. We're very sorry if we've caused any issues and we're glad to hear that Kate is doing well."

UPDATE 7th December 2012: The nurse at a London hospital who took this hoax call about the Duchess of Cambridge has been found dead. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said in a statement they were "deeply saddened" by the death of the nurse, named as Jacintha Saldanha. King Edward VII hospital paid tribute to "a first class nurse" who was the "victim of a hoax call."

Details of the pregnant duchess's medical condition were unwittingly revealed to two Australian DJs. The DJs, from Sydney radio station 2Day FM - which says it is preparing a statement - posed as the Queen and Prince Charles. Mrs Saldanha, a duty nurse, answered the telephone because it was 05:30 GMT in the morning and there was no receptionist on duty. The BBC understands Mrs Saldanha had not been suspended or disciplined by the hospital.

The St James's Palace statement said the duke and duchess "were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time". A palace spokesman later added that "at no point did the palace complain to the hospital about the incident. On the contrary, we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times."

The hospital said in a statement: "We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time." It added: "Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII's Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues."

Scotland Yard said officers were called at 09:35 GMT on Friday after reports of a woman found unconscious at an address in central London. They said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Coldplay round-up: MX album art raises $800,000 (£500,000), Chris @ 12-12-12 concert (streamed live), Spotify charts

Coldplay have raised more than $800,000 (£500,000) for charity by selling off their graffiti-covered wall which featured on the sleeve of the Mylo Xyloto album. Phil Harvey confirmed the sale on Twitter this week, saying: "Take a bow Coldplay fans. An incredible £610,000 raised so far from the Mylo art sale."

Coldplay displayed the large piece, a collaboration with street artist Paris, at Proud Galleries in London ahead of an auction in aid of Kids Company, a charity which helps at-risk children in the capital. The huge artwork sold to an anonymous bidder from the Far East for $800,000 on Monday, while other art works by the band and behind-the-scenes photographs from their life on the road raised another $176,00 (£110,000), taking the total to $967,000 (£610,000).

Chris will take to the stage on 12th December for the '12-12-12' show, which aims to raise funds for those effected by the events of the recent super storm which hit the East coast of America. Starting Starting at 7:30 p.m. EST, on December 12, "12-12-12," The Concert for Sandy Relief, will be broadcast live from Madison Square Garden via a global network of US and International television stations, Clear Channel radio stations and leading web sites. Every single penny from ticket purchases and donations will go to serve the victims of Hurricane Sandy through the Robin Hood Relief Fund. The Robin Hood Relief Fund provides money, material and know-how to local organisations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the recent storm.

Finally, Streaming music service Spotify has revealed some charts of the most-streamed tracks, albums and artists for 2012 in its Review of the Year - and Coldplay have been revealed as the most-streamed band.

Gotye feat. Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ was the most-streamed track globally, while David Guetta’s ‘Nothing But The Beat’ was the most-streamed album. Rihanna and Guetta were the most-streamed female and male artists. There’s an irony here: the most-streamed female artist and band - Rihanna and Coldplay respectively - both kept their last albums off Spotify when they went on sale elsewhere, with high-profile holdouts Adele and Taylor Swift also the third and eighth most-streamed female artists respectively for the year.

Meanwhile, Spotify released a top-10 chart of the most popular apps on its platform in 2012: entirely startups/discovery apps, rather than artist apps: TuneWiki, Soundrop, We Are Hunted, Last.fm, Pitchfork, Digstr, MusiXmatch, Billboard, Filtr and Moodagent.

Coldplay's Live 2012 concert film has now been released worldwide. It documents the Mylo Xyloto world tour, which has been seen by more than three million people since it began in June 2011. The disc includes footage from Coldplay's shows at Paris's Stade de France, Montreal's Bell Centre and the band's Pyramid Stage headline performance at Glastonbury 2011.

Last week, Coldplayers around the world watched the Live 2012 cinema screening ahead of the physical release, and this article focuses on the many reviews coming in from fans who went to see the new Live 2012 concert film in theatres around the world. We had so many reviews, we decided to spread them about a bit over several articles - read on for our second selection of reviews and images from around the globe...

Venue: Stratford London. Absolutely fantastic. Second best to seeing it live, which I did in London. But I didn't see myself which was the only bad thing. I wore my mx jacket and sang and clapped. I found it fascinating when the interviews came on and thought it broke the concerts up perfectly - not ruin it as people are mentioning. Now like ever coldplayer I look forward to watching it all again in solid surround sound and blue ray as loud as humanly possible. And see and possible extras such as cadburys buttons-the return of!!!! That's why Chris is the ultimate show man. So much energy and effort. Johnny is immaculate. Will is crazy and guy is smooth. Can't wait for the next album boys. 10/10. Hope everyone enjoyed the film. [thanks ah2k10]

In my city, I didn't expect that many people coming. The room was a bit less than half-filled. Just before the screening, a man (who then said that he was a dj for NRJ Grenoble - they are making people win tickets to Australia, btw, too bad I don't have the time to participate) tried to warm up the room...which was pretty difficult already They weren't really into it, for the large majority. When he asked if some us went to Paris, about 5 of us raised hands and shyly cheered. Some of the songs during the movie ended with a few claps (some initiated by me or the guy next to me, damn what a fanboy he was REALLY into it, sang a lot and everything , sometimes it was also initiated by the claps from the movie, that sounded very...close and real, in a way ). But, yeah, for the large majority, most of the time, it was all pretty dead That was a disappointment, definitely, but I tried to not let it get in the way of enjoying the film Coldplay's hotness worked making me stare at the screen and focus on nothing else, of course! seen it in haarlem/netherlands tonight and loved it all the way.its cool to see the arena and all from their perspective and the lights and all. i did love the talking in between,makes it more a film instead just a concert and also the way its filmed. even made me emotional every now and then. and now waiting for the dvd to arrive and watch it over and over again. The film was really amazing! The audience wasn't cheering or clapping along here either but it's a cinema and not a concert venue. So I wasn't expecting that much from the audience. The most important part is that I saw the film and it was absolutely breathtaking, I really felt like I was back at a concert, and it really seemed to be longer than 96 minutes but it wasn't. I gotta admit I wasnt expecting anything from this film but WOW!!! Amazing!!!!! Easily 10/10! I didnt quite know what Chris was saying about the chocolate buttons at the end because i was too busy humming up with the birds lol, I hope they leave it on the DVD and its not just for the cinema version. My cinema showing was about quarter filled, and during the first half of the film people were texting and on their mobile phones, but during the second half it was dead quiet, everyone was glued to the film. The only downside was not including their best song, The Scientist. I hope its on the DVD version or better still on the CD. [thanks likeafire]

Ok then, I think I might get a bit emotional here so feel free to skip my message. I've never been to a concert and I don't think I ever will (can't afford it). So this was my only chance to get "closer" to the band. To my surprise, the room was full of people and we were singing, clapping, and basically being happy. We didn't know each other, we probably will never meet again but in that moment, in that place, we were all united. It's not only music, Coldplay is not just a band. I felt a bond around us. As for the show... what can I say. I love every single song, word, gesture... everything. Because it's about them - the person behind the artist. I admit I cried right before, during and after Up In Flames, because I felt their solitude in the hotel rooms. I don't think they will ever see this but I want to thank everyone for putting this beautiful film in cinemas, you made me feel as if I was in one of your concerts. Thank you for your inspiration. I live in the darkness but, tonight, I've been glowing in the dark. [thanks Karmen]

Just came back from the cinema, man it was AMAZING. And it was pretty cool that the cinema staff turned up the volume REALLY high so that my ears started to tingle as if I actually was at a concert. I went to the cinema together with Fraetes, Phil (not the Coldplay Phil ), mc_squared, Volker41, Danceteacher, katja, Yellow_Girl, Dark_Sofie, Jacky and her best friend. We really had trouble to not stand up during the movie, jump around, scream and sing along It was so cool to have so many Coldplayers around me! Oh, and it was rather funny so see what other kind of people sat around us: Some wore suits and some wore xylobands And it seemed that everyone picked a yellow one LOL, figures! So I don't want to say anything about the movie since some people couldn't go to the cinema today and have to wait for their DVD so I don't wanna spoil them...

I will only say that the movie was amazingly done, there was live footage and little intermissions that were rather... emotional (and oftentimes in b/w) that got me all teary eyed The movie really shows some interesting stuff that happens behind/after the stage, and makes you realise that the members of Coldplay are just as human as you are, even if they seem like rock gods on stage. They all feel the same about the show as we do, and they all have their problems to deal with, like the stress of being apart from your family (there's a rather touching story of Will in the movie) etc. 16,70€ was rather expensive for 110 minutes, but oh well And there was something VERY funny after the credits has been played hahah! Anyways, it was totally worth it, after the movie was played our whole seated line of Coldplayers threw up their hands in the air and applauded, totally influenced all the people around us and made the whole theater cheer and clapping their hands, which was pretty epic! NOW I WANT THAT DVD, I need to analyse every pixel of this movie! [thanks Twisted mind]

I've screamed all time, ETIAW was amazing, all people singing and clapping! During Fix You I was in heaven. During GPASUYF I was singing so laud that all cinema was looking at me!!! I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who dislike Rihanna, infact no one was singing PoC and after the show I've eard many people saying: "she was dressed like a bitch". 8/10 [thanks joseki]

Will Champion to appear in new 'Game Of Thrones' series in 2013

Will Champion may be swapping the stage for the small screen after reportedly bagging a spot on the upcoming new series in fantasy show, Game Of Thrones. (Full discussion on this new article is at the Coldplay forum now [thanks Tash])

You know your show is a big deal when you need to cast a drummer and Will Champion shows up. While there are few other details about his character, Entertainment Weekly reports that he is expected to make an appearance in the third season which is currently being filmed. And Will Champion isn't the first musician to appear in the hit fantasy drama as Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody confirmed that he had filmed a set of scenes back in July. While little is known about Lightbody's role also, he will be joining Champion in the third season. Game Of Thrones returns to HBO on March 31st, 2013.

Former Misfits star Iwan Rheon, Mackenzie Crook from The Office and Ed Skrein, who starred in Plan B's film Ill Manors, have also had parts confirmed for the third series. The programme is based on a series of books by George R. R. Martin.

Past series have featured battles between powerful families in the fantasy continent of Westeros. There has been some criticism over the levels of sex and violence that are featured. Game of Thrones has been nominated for Emmys and Golden Globes and Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, has won an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.

BBC Radio 2: Coldplay to play December concerts in Glasgow, Manchester and London?

DJ Chris Evans has this morning announced on his breakfast show that Coldplay will play three UK concerts in December, in Glasgow, Manchester and London. Listen back to the announcement on BBC Radio 2 here (fast forward to 2h20m30s). The exact dates according to Chris Evans are as follows:

3 December - Glasgow

4 December - Manchester

9 December - London

It is not clear yet whether these shows are linked to charity events or are standalone Coldplay shows as part of the ongoing Mylo Xylotour, BUT the three dates are EXACTLY the same as the ones in 2011, so we are questioning the validity of this announcement and whether this is actually an on-air blunder. Coldplay's Live 2012 concert film to get a special one-night-only release in cinemas

Live 2012 - Coldplay's first live concert film for nine years, is to get a special one-night-only release in cinemas around the world, it has now been confirmed on the official site. More than 50 countries will screen the full feature length film on Tuesday, 13 November. Confirmed listings and links to book tickets can be found at coldplay.com/cinema now.

The JA Digital production for EMI/Parlophone, is directed by Paul Dugdale, previously responsible for Adele’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall and The Prodigy's World's On Fire concert films. The film documents Coldplay's acclaimed Mylo Xyloto world tour, which has been seen by more than three million people since it began in June 2011. Live 2012 includes footage from Coldplay’s shows at Paris's Stade de France, Montreal’s Bell Centre and last year’s triumphant Pyramid Stage headline performance at Glastonbury Festival. Several trailers for the film, including full videos for Yellow, Charlie Brown, The Scientist and Don't Let It Break Your Heart can be seen here.

The countries currently confirmed to show the film are as follows: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain and UK. More countries are expected to be added soon.

Chris Martin said of the film: "The Mylo Xyloto tour has been the most fun we’ve ever had as a band. It’s felt very uplifting right from the start; partly because we are proud of the music, the LED wristbands, the pyrotechnics, the lasers and all of that stuff, but mainly because of the amazing audiences that we’ve been playing for. Over the years, our crowd has become more and more a part of the concert itself. They’re loud, diverse, full of soul, and make the songs sound much better than we can on our own. We wanted to try to bottle the incredible feeling that they give us, and hence our concert film."

Director Paul Dugdale added: "Seeing this film on the big screen highlights the epic scale of the concerts, and I’m thrilled that fans can experience Coldplay Live 2012 in fantastic visual quality with incredible sound, in cinemas full of fans. With insight from the band and a glimpse of what life on the road with Coldplay is like, this is a unique opportunity to witness Coldplay in all its cinematic glory on the big screen."

Stefan Demetriou, VP Visual Content Strategy and Acquisition at EMI Music, said "We’re delighted that we can bring the full-length version of Coldplay Live 2012 to selected cinemas around the world. The Mylo Xyloto tour is such a visual spectacle that seeing and hearing it on the big screen, and being part of this one-night-only experience along with the most passionate Coldplay fans around the world, is the next best thing to being there."

This is exciting! I'm so torn, though. The ticket is so pricey, costs around the same as the dvd which I've ordered. I bought my ticket the minute sales opened up at the box office, so I was the very first in my city (I bet in the whole country too ). As it was not yet confirmed by the management, I interrogated the poor ticket lady about returns. Other than that, no fuss, ticket cost me $12 as opposed to regular $8. I'm confuseeed. Pathe de Kuip in Rotterdam is sold out online, at least, that's what the website says. I already bought tickets on Friday, when the site was in the air for like 2 hours, and the lady from Customer Service said they are valid (although she sounded like she was 15 and had NO clue what she was talking about). Is there anybody else with tickets already? If so, does your tickets say 'vrije plaatskeuze' or do you have certain specified seats? Live 2012 DVD round-up: worldwide cinema screenings 13th Nov, Jonny talks 'colourful inspiration' behind film

According to various cinema websites across the world, you can see the Live 2012 film exclusively in movie theatres for one day only on November 13th. 'First come, first served with tickets on sale worldwide at the end of October' is the message that has been given out.

So far to date Coldplayers have found listings at cinemas in the UK, US, Argentina, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, France, Lithuania, Denmark and Bulgaria, with more shows expected to be listed across the world closer to mid-November. A word of warning though - a similar screening promotion happened in the US and Canada prior to the Glastonbury 2011 performance last year - when this was pulled from all listings and it became clear that it would not be shown in cinemas. (If you see this happening in your neck of the woods please let us know in the forums!)

Meanwhile, following on from the promotional videos of the Live 2012 DVD, various media articles have been quoting the band members from the promotional preview clips. For example, PopCrush wrote: Coldplay‘s Mylo Xyloto album was created based on a single visual image, a burst of color amidst a dark world. That’s according to guitarist Jonny Buckland, who described the record and its corresponding tour in a new clip from the band’s upcoming Live 2012 concert film and album.

Jonny said the band had a mental image of rays of colour shooting through concrete. "The initial image we started with for the Mylo Xyloto album a rose bursting through concrete, that was was the starting point of the whole thing, this splash of life and color and passion in a bleak, gray place," he confirmed. "Everything else kind of grew out of that one image."

Jonny added that the group made a conscious decision to paint all over their instruments, amps and tour props with the same splashes of color seen on the album cover. "It feels like we're right in the middle of the tour... right smack bang in the middle. We've done quite a lot but there's still a lot more to go. It just feels like something we've never really done this well before. It feels like we're ready to play stadiums now, which I don't think we've ever felt like before."

He continued: "Stagewise, we've got an artist called Paris, and a designer called Misty to help us paint absolutely everything. All the guitars, all the amps, and these enormous 100 metre drapes that we put over the back (of the stadium seats); the whole of the stage floor in painted. Everything is just covered in luminous paint. We wanted to take over the whole stadium and make it feel like it was ours." Chris Martin previously said the film will focus on the crowds just as much as his band: "Over the years, our crowd has become more and more a part of the concert itself. They’re loud, diverse, full of soul, and make the songs sound much better than we can on our own. We wanted to try to bottle the incredible feeling that they give us, and hence our concert film."

Earlier in another Live 2012 DVD preview clip, Chris said: "I see this tour as the last shackles being thrown off of being worried about what anyone thinks. I'd love it if in 20 years we would look back on this and think that's when I feel we started to become really good. We don't tell anyone all the darker side of things but we've been through all the breakups and the addictions and all that. We have a chemistry that no-one else in the world has so we don't mess with it."

UK: Coldplay fraudster spared jail after selling non-existant Etihad and Emirates tickets

A conman has been spared jail after scamming Coldplay fans for tickets that never existed, the Lancashire Evening Post are reporting this week. James Shevlin, 51, has a "disgusting" record for fraud, dating back to the 1970s and has served a prison sentence after cheating a pub landlord out of his identity and livelihood. We reported on this guy back in early September.

But a judge at Preston Crown Court today ruled the public would be best served by handing Shevlin a suspended sentence to allow him to rebuild his life after falling into financial difficulties. In his latest scam Shevlin advertised tickets for Coldplay’s concert on June 2 at the Emirates Stadium London, on the online selling site Gumtree. He also advertised tickets for Coldplay’s Manchester concert, which also took place in June, on the Gumtree website at a cost of around £300.

Using the sites messaging facility, he gave his mobile phone number and an email showing ticket receipts to Shelley Riley, who was buying the tickets for a friend’s 40th birthday. She transferred £240 to Shevlin who sent her an email receipt but as the date of the concert drew near and with no sign of the tickets, Mrs Riley tried to contact Shevlin, who did not answer her calls.

Shevlin, of Tag Lane, Ingol, was arrested and told police he had used the money to fund his day-to-day living travelling to Wales to visit his son. He admitted obtaining £1,541 by deception, asking the court to take seven other offences relating to the same concert into consideration. James Hawkes, defending, said Shevlin’s crime was “unsophisticated”. He said: “This was a man conducting these transactions in his own name, using his own bank account, ensuring that once a complaint was made detection was inevitable.”

In 2007 Shevlin was locked up for three years after stealing the identity of pub landlord Peter Hough. The conman went on a £21,000 spending spree in Mr Hough’s name, treating himself to a Mercedes and running up credit after befriending the landlord when he ran the Smiths Arms pub in Lea Town.

Mr Hough was forced to give up the pub after being refused credit and was left on the brink of financial ruin as a result of Shevlin’s unscrupulous crime. But Mr Hawkes said since Shevlin was released from prison in May 2009 he had not committed any offences of dishonesty for three years “which by his previous standard is not insignificant.”

Recorder Christopher Alldis, sentencing, said: “You are a heavily convicted fraudster with a disgusting record. The offences for which I have to deal with are to do with offering ticket - tickets which you never possessed and never would possess.”

He noted a pre-sentence report which said neither custodial or non custodial sentences had the effect of stopping his offending, but said: “It seems to me that the better option for both the public point of view and your point of view is for me to suspend that sentence. “If that type of sentence enables you to get your life back on track then the public has been well served.”

Shevlin must undergo 12 months supervision and was warned he would go straight to jail if he commits any further offences.

Coldplay to sell original 'Mylo Xyloto' cover art for charity - see new exhibits & behind-the-scenes photos

Coldplay are to hold an original exhibition of their artwork for charity, and they're even going to put some special pieces up for sale

Coldplay are to swap the UK's stadiums for an art gallery, as they exhibit original album art from their latest album Mylo Xyloto, various sources are reporting today including Gigwise, following official confirmation via coldplay.com. The exhibition will take place at Proud Galleries in London next month, and all of the money raised will go to the Kids Company Charity. All of Coldplay have been strong supporters of the charity for a number of years. Frontman Chris Martin was keen to show his support for the cause, and explain how the band collaborated with artist Paris when producing the artwork. He said: "Kids Company is a phenomenal organisation that is very close to our hearts. While we were making the last album we did quite a lot of painting with our friend Paris."

The exhibition will showcase three pieces of artwork by Coldplay and Paris that were painted on a specially created wall in the band's studio. Chris added: "We built a special wall in our studio and sprayed it, wrote on it and threw things at it until it eventually became the artwork for Mylo Xyloto. This exhibition will be the first time that the wall has appeared in public."

In addition there will also be a smaller wall on display, which has been painted by Paris and children from the Kids Company Charity. All of the work on display, including the original 7m X 2.5m wall that formed Mylo Xyloto's cover art, will be on sale to members of the public, with all the proceeds going to the Kids Company charity. Coldplay are also releasing a DVD next month featuring footage of the Montreal and Paris concerts on the Mylo Xyloto tour, as well as their Glastonbury 2011 headline slot.

Coldplay and Paris are pleased to announce an exhibition of original Mylo Xyloto artwork to raise funds for Kids Company. The exhibition will run from 29 November to 2 December at Proud Galleries in Camden, London.

The show will feature three original paintings on canvas by Coldplay and the band's Mylo Xyloto artwork collaborator Paris, as well as the original 7m X 2.5m graffiti wall that became the album artwork. A second wall painted by children from Kids Company and Paris will be displayed alongside Coldplay’s larger wall.

Also at the exhibition will be three high-quality prints of the Mylo Xyloto album artwork (each a limited edition of 8 and signed by the band); three high-quality album artwork prints (each a limited edition of 650 and signed by Paris); and unseen photographs from the Mylo Xyloto world tour taken by Roadie #42. These prints have been produced by Album Artists.

All of the work is for sale - both at the exhibition and online at Album Artists' website - with 100% of the proceeds going to Kids Company, a children’s charity which reaches out to over 17,000 vulnerable young people in the most deprived areas of London.

We built a special wall in our studio and sprayed it, wrote on it and threw things at it until it eventually became the artwork for Mylo Xyloto. This exhibition will be the first time that the wall has appeared in public."

Will Champion added: “The big wall and the three paintings are all one-off Coldplay/Paris originals. The money raised will make a big difference to some of London’s most vulnerable children.”

Camila Batmanghelidjh, Kids Company founder / CEO, said: “The support Coldplay have given us over the years has been amazing. Art plays a major role in Kids Company’s work with vulnerable children: kids who have experienced trauma often find it easier to express themselves using art materials rather than words. Our recent award-winning exhibition in partnership with the Royal Academy demonstrated this very powerfully and poignantly.”

The Mylo Xyloto exhibition will take place at Proud Galleries, The Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH. Entry is free and it will be open from 11am to 5pm each day. For the full list of available works, click here.

The Hurts Like Heaven music video was released online at 3pm (GMT) on 8th October 2012, and since then you have been reviewing the video and voting on our 0-10 sliding scale poll. Below are the latest poll results and many more comments in addition to the ones we posted earlier.

The video tells the tale of two lovers on an alien planet who rebel against a dictatorship. The visual is presented as a comic book, in support of Coldplay's upcoming comic series about a character named Mylo Xyloto, who is "a young Silencer on the front lines of a war against sound and colour in the world of Silencia". The story follows a war, led by the character Major Minus [the name of one of the band's songs on their Mylo Xyloto album] who takes prisoners of the male and female lead. A young character emerges from a window after the message "all hope is lost…or is it" is displayed and puts a multi-colured handprint on the glass. It's revealed his name is Mylo, the lead character in the album's tale. The video ends with a teaser for the comic series, which will be unveiled in full in 2013.

Some people dislike how MX was "mixed" or "produced" given that most songs are quite busy in terms of layering synths with the guitar/bass/piano/drums. Indeed, some moments feel like a "wall of sound". After seeing this video, It's clearer what the band was aiming for. MX is both a soundtrack and rock album. On the surface, there are a handful of pop songs. Dig a little deeper, and you feel the soundscapes, interludes, and narrative of the album. For HLH, I always felt the intensity and rush of the exploding dynamics of the song. Watching this video gives that artistic enthusiasm a back story. I think thats pretty cool. Like others have said, If Coldplay wants to cash out on something, there are much better options. Stadium shows without expensive xylobands, greatest hits records, charging for LRLRL… not $5 comics. They're doing this because they want to tell a story and they want to push their music further. [thanks nathondetroit]

People who dislike the video are generally overreacting. a lot of you guys really have to lower your expectations with coldplay. every one of the MX music videos has been crap! Paradise is way too disney (i know the band don't take themselves seriously but elephants? come on! certainly excited the 14 year olds) and ETIAW was also very cheesy with them jumping up and down etc. and lets just forget CB and PoC. as others have mentioned, they come nowhere near their older videos, much like the music actually. so just accept it for what it is. After watching the video for the first time... I can see why people dislike it. It is pretty much a glorified advertisement for the comics. But I have seen much, MUCH worse attempts than this. In fact, I definitely think it's a great way to share at least part of the story Coldplay have created with this album. I would have preferred if it was fully animated, but meh, I'm not too fussed. I thought that was immensely cool. It captured my attention more than any of their other videos. But I know nothing of the actual comic books so... EDIT: I read through the whole thread and I cannot believe how much some of you are over-reacting. "I have never lost so much respect for this band!!! Absolute fucking sellouts!!!" Sellouts? How much money do you think they're gonna make from this? Let's say they sell a lot more than they really will, like 100,000 copies. Let's even assume that there's no cost involved in making them and they make 100% profit. That still wouldn't be as much as playing a stadium show here, which they've been doing virtually every single night for the past 2 years on this tour. And while we're at it, let's talk about the actual definition of sellout: Noun 1. sellout - an act of betrayal[12]. Yep. We've been completely betrayed. Coldplay has abandoned all their values to make millions more than they already have! Oh no !!! I'm a huge fan of Coldplay, still know all of their songs by heart and all. And I would have never known about any of this comic book business had it not been for this video. Just because you follow every footprint that this band makes every moment of the day doesn't mean that all of Coldplay's millions of fans will do so. Even the big fans just listen to lots of their material, but do not check on news on Coldplay so frequently. It was a fair enough idea to let people know where they can see more of an idea they were really interested in! Dislike the video all you want, but you have very poor arguments to back it up. Just say that you dislike it. Coldplay is, was, and will continue to be one of the most 'mainstream' bands you can possibly listen to. What matters is whether or not the video was beautiful and it entertained you. What does 'intended for the mainstream community' even mean? Some of you guys should stop living in the past. This is a different era of music, a video like The Scientist wouldn´t fit in here. It is naturally that you don´t like everything. Some of you call the video childish, I call it childish that you think your opinion what they should do is a matter of fact. It is important that they try different styles. Besides it is advertising, it looks visually great and fits in to the MX era. With all those colors ... you know what I mean. Music videos are always marketing tools, they're made to sell music. So I don't blame them for taking it a step further and show everyone they've created a comic book series WHICH YOU MUST BUY NOW!!!!!! Seriously though. It's great that they're trying out new stuff (both the comics and this video) and I think the idea behind it is far better than the Charlie Brown video, so I'm happy! But it's still an add and like some people have said, it looks like they're trying to make you buy something, instead of just entertaining you for a few mintues and then you can go do something else. The video would be better if they cut the begginning and the end with the «coming early in 2013, the full story of Mylo».... Why they didn't just write an article to promote their comic book?! About the video. I would have liked a full animated video, but it's ok. I like the multiple reference about the album (Car Kids, Major Minus, Mylo (...)) So wait, if they hadn't announced the comic a few months ago at Comic-Con, but used this video to announce the comic instead, would your reactions be any different? I personally love this video because it really embraces both the comic and the story of Mylo Xyloto. I mean this video is as MX as it gets! Didn't we complain how the PoC video had nothing at all to do with the album? I loved the little touches of the characters' connections, the wild abandon as they color Silencia and the reactions of the citizens to color. It sets up the stage for Mylo's story so well. 9/10 for me, only because they cut Jonny's solos. I'm disappointed about that as well. [thanks wabbit]

I'm of a mixed opinion... On the one hand, I felt like it wasn't brilliant - it was good, yes, but nothing absolutely out of the ordinary. On the other hand, I feel like I'm trying to compare it to all their other videos, when really I should be trying to take it purely on its own merit. And if I go with the latter, then I think I actually really like it. Yes, I agree that it did feel a little like just an advert for the comics, but I also loved the story of it and thought that considering how difficult animation must be, it was actually very good. Overall, I found myself really enjoying it. I think I might be biased because I'm a huge fan of 'individuals fighting back against the horrible oppressive regime' storylines but whilst this is not one of Coldplay's best, I still do like it. Voted a 4. The song is one of the highlights from Mylo (The album is rather mediocre), but this video... I don't know. The idea seemed like a plan, but I honestly don't believe this is a direction Coldplay fits in. Making a comic about your album and including a music video to advertise it seems more of a stunt that Maroon 5 would do. Personally, this looks like another company inspired project like featuring Rihanna. Looking at the music video, it was, well, OK. The artistic style and colours were great, but it felt more like a fan video rather then anything official. Overall it seemed intended for the mainstream community, and that's quite a shame. Hm, every time I start watching it I don't like it up until the middle. I feel it's stretched out. But the very ending of the story when the Car Kids are rounded up gets me - it gets across the drama well, I think; with Aiko & Lela being separated and the robot cleaning the sparks. And then the credits come and ruin all this build up :S Not mentioning the fact the song itself seems to be, what, 2:30 minutes long? Also, I'd love HLH to have two different videos: one for televising and the mainstream consumption, maybe a live performance and the other based on the comics. Also, don't tell ME to open up my eyes, they're already wide open. I know marketing, I fckin study it for God's sake. (Obviously it's a marketing gimmick, of course. From the beginning, I slowly started to be disappointed more and more...I didnt understand the plot, didnt have enough time to read the text, etc... BUT the end completely changed my view! i thought the video itself was great. it's not just a sort of ad, it's also a prequel, and it does a really great job of setting up the story without relying too heavily on text (there are the blurbs throughout, but i didn't bother reading half of them the first time through and it still made perfect sense to me). the entire world of the comic has been successfully set up in less than four minutes, and it has only made me even more excited for the actual comics. the animation was pretty cool, too. the only thing about this video for me is that i watched it once and just knew that it would be better suited to ETIAW than HLH. and now i've watched it several times with ETIAW playing instead of HLH and it really does fit a lot better. I don't know how people can claim this music video is intended for the "mainstream audience". If this video was put on MTV or any such channel people would be like "wtf is this, where's 16 and pregnant?" (cause MTV doesn't play music videos anymore) Mainstream people want a video like Charlie Brown, lights all over the place, people dancing and a couple making out and crap. Out of all the singles Coldplay have released from Mylo, my favorite is Charlie Brown. But I hated the video and I hated that Coldplay did something so mainstream as that video, because I'm used to the different videos Coldplay produce that isn't mainstream garbage. Yes I admit Coldplay have gone a bit mainstream but it doesn't mean that they don't still retain their style that makes them Coldplay. You'll never hear songs with lyrics such as Coldplay's on the radio. Seeing the HLH it shows me that hope isn't lost for Coldplay. Yes it does feel like it's an ad for the comics. But it's THEIR comics. I didn't see anyone flip shit when they released the trailer for THEIR live film. That was an ad! It's saying "look we have a new dvd coming out, so you should like totally pre order it" Every music video that is released is technically an ad for their single. People hear it on the radio and they either buy it or download it illegally.

I'm sure there's a lot of people here who have friends who aren't crazy about Coldplay but have songs like viva la vida, paradise, ETIAW, etc. Because those songs are played on the radio as ads. Fans here are just not happy that it's not the video they wanted. Coldplay is finally breaking out of their shell, doing what they want to do and not what others want to do. How long have their fans wanted them to admit they're amazing? And now they are and people are upset about it. I think the video is amazing, and just because it's not what we're used to shouldn't' mean people should think less of it. This video fits with the likes of Strawberry Swing, Paradise, Life in Technicolor ii (my favorite video ever) etc. I could ramble for ever about this and i'm sorry if it's a bit inconsistent, but people really need to stop hating on this era, this album, song, decisions and everything else. My thoughts? It's ok, I guess. My expectations weren't super high for any other MX era material though, seeing as I have been disappointed in the past. Pretty colors and stuff, I didn't mind the level of 3D animation, I thought it was ok. Creating a fully animated video would have taken soooooo much more time, so I don't fault them for that. The storyline is *ok*, doesn't explain much in my opinion other than introduce some of the characters. There was time available if the song wasn't cut. Yeah, it's clear that it's an advertisement or promotion for the comic. Personally, this doesn't fuss me so much. Mmmm some interesting thoughts here people!! I can only say from an 'older' fans perspective comics do not do it for me, I love coldplay for their music, always have and hopefully always will so have no interest in the comics at all. I dont think MX is coldplay at their best either, listen to politik, amsterdam,clocks etc. MX is catchy and lightens my mood and I would have liked it even if it wasnt them, but again HLH isnt my favourite, its too much like CB, I would prefer Major Minus myself. Chris has said this is the most fun they've had making a record but from a fans point of view I hope they get a bit more 'grown-up' on their next album! I haven't been much into this MX thing since the beginning, so I just can't like this video. It's so weird, I like most of the songs from the album but I don't like the 'packaging'. gave it a 4/10. the song is cut short in a very annoying way. I love the song in its enterity so I think I'll look forward to the live 2012 video of it & consider it the official video. I would love the video to be fully animated. It wasn't. It showed that the comics are going to be really good, but it added nothing to the song! The plain ad at the end was quite silly. The video is just making me wanna read the comics just to read them... but I thought the video was def. different. I'm not sure if I liked it or not (I'm so used to seeing Coldplay in their music videos that like everybody else said.. this felt like an ad and not an actual music video) but different because they've never done something similar before and they are the only ones doing this. I also didn't like that it wasn't animated. I think it would have been better if it was animated. The video makes me feel like I could have made the video with an app. myself and honestly it was a matter of time before a fan made a fan-video with the scans of the comic... (scan the comic pages, make it hd, add the comic texts throughout the video, add some cool colorful effect, add where you can order it at the end..) Coldplay news round-up: Christmas Lights on Glee CD, Simon Fuller & EMI, Small Steps Project

Coldplay's Christmas Lights song from 2010 will be featured on Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Volume 3, according to sources at the Huffington Post this week. It is currently unknown who will be singing this song. More on this is at the Coldplay forum now [thanks Tash]

According to Hypable, the album will hit stores on 4th December, 21 days before the big day. The album, the third "Glee" holiday CD, will include some contemporary Christmas songs mixed with classics. The reported tracklist is as follows: "Shake Up Christmas" / "Mistletoe" / "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" / "White Christmas" ("Skinny Love") / "All I Have" / "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" / "Wonderful Christmastime" / "Snow" / "My Only Wish (This Year)" / "Christmas Lights" / "Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree" / "Magic" / "Silent Night"

Next, Simon Fuller is reportedly planning to buy the 60% of EMI's businesses divested as part of the Universal acquisition in Europe in a £350 million deal, write Music Week. The tip comes from The Independent, which positions the XIX Entertainment founder, American Idol pioneer and Spice Girls mastermind as a potential suitor for all of EMI's UMG deal concessions including Parlophone, Chrysalis, Mute and the catalogues of Pink Floyd, Kate Bush and David Bowie. (Last week we reported that Blur were leading a revolt against the sell-off of Parlophone, part of the EMI group, which has been the launchpad for dozens of artists, including Coldplay.)

Fuller will be joined in the EMI bid by founder of Island Records Chris Blackwell, private financiers and a leading mobile telecommunications company, according to the broadsheet. Universal is overseeing the sale and the label's CEO Lucian Grainge has worked with Fuller on several projects in the past, including S Club 7. A spokesman for Fuller's company said: "XIX is a growing company and we'd always be interested in new opportunities in music as they arise. With Simon's track record over 25 years as Britain's most successful music manager we hope his interest in EMI would carry the support of the industry."

Fuller plans to relaunch the Now! compilations series as a weekly television and web show featuring stars such as Jay-Z and Madonna performing their latest hits, alongside a download chart rundown. "Simon can launch new television vehicles using hit songs, there could be a Coldplay American Idol special. He understands the sensitivities that artists have about their futures," an associate said.

A host of global celebrities, including our very own Chris Martin, have kindly donated a signed pair of shoes to the Small Steps Project: London Celebrity Shoe Auction 2012 at www.smallstepsproject.org. The exclusive live event is being held on October 11th at Jalouse Club in Hanover Square, London. Last year over 88 celebrities took part In the Small Steps London Celebrity Shoe Auction where over £20,000 was raised for charity Small Steps Project and in turn provided thousands of shoes, clothes, food and aid to barefoot children scavenging for survival on landfill sites around the world. Chris Martin is only one of two donors to decorate their shoes, Ronnie Wood has hand painted his and Chris has decorated and actually created these shoes. Chris explained, "These shoes come from the beginning of the Mylo xyloto album project. They are sort of homemade and I love them, and am proud to be asked to donate them to this wonderful cause."

Small Steps Project said: "We want to say a huge thank you to Chris for taking a small step and giving us a totally unique pair of shoes (UK size 12). Small Steps is always trying to encourage celebrities to use their status to help those in poverty and Chris Martin is certainly one that needs no encouragement. What a legend."

Herald Sun: Chris Martin tipped to replace Keith Urban on Australia's The Voice next month

Chris Martin will take over from Keith Urban on Australia's 'The Voice' during Coldplay's Australasian tour next month, if the headlines in today's Herald Sun are to be believed. Herald Sun: It's the job that has been linked to almost every musician here and abroad and now a new frontrunner has emerged in the hunt for a Keith Urban replacement on The Voice Australia. Music industry sources say Chris Martin, who is set to touch down here early next month for a series of concerts with his British super band Coldplay, is close to signing a deal and his appearances will be worked around his Australian tour schedule.

Coldplay are due to open their Antipodean tour in Auckland on November 10. They will then move on to Melbourne (November 13) and Sydney (November 17 and 18), before winding up their Xylo Myloto tour in Brisbane on November 21. The visit would also work in nicely with The Voice's filming schedule. Auditions for the second season are understood to be well under way and blind studio auditions are set to begin taping in the coming weeks.

A music source said that executives for The Voice's production company Shine are keen to nail down the high-profile coup and that Martin - who was reportedly offered a spot on The Voice UK's coaching panel last year but declined - would return to Australia next year for live tapings. "The schedules check out and (Martin) ticks all (Shine's) boxes," a music insider said. "He has a huge international profile and the publicity would do no harm to Coldplay's album sales in Australia. Plus, he is married to Gwyneth Paltrow."

A rep for Nine said an announcement regarding Urban's replacement would be made "soon". A Shine spokeswoman said: "Nothing to say on that." In the wake of Urban's defection to American Idol, The Script's Danny O'Donoghue and Kylie Minogue are also believed to have been approached for the coveted coaching gig.

Watch four Hurts Like Heaven videos: Trailer, Full Promo, Making Of, Storyboard (plus comments, screenshots, poll)

Coldplay have posted a 30 second teaser trailer on Twitter for their "Hurts like Heaven' music video due on Monday. "The next single from Mylo Xyloto will be 'Hurts Like Heaven'," they tweeted last night. "Full video coming on Monday - watch the trailer now..."

The clip features comic book style animation set to a futuristic dsytopian storyline and does not feature the band. Digital Spy described it as: "The futuristic animation contains flashes of neon, which have become the band's trademark over the course of Mylo Xyloto's promotions. The story also appears to feature male and female protagonists who, according to briefly displayed captions, fight a villain named 'Major Minus' and his army of 'silencers'.

Since the preview clip was posted, Coldplayers have found THREE more videos from the Xperia Lounge website that have been made available as MP4 downloads, as follows: Hurts Like Heaven promo video, Storyboard video, Making of Hurts Like Heaven video - watch them all now ahead of Monday's full video release.

bahh. I don't understand why they keep shooting so low when we know they're capable of so much more. It's just so disappointing to see them kicking good music in the teeth. Terrible song, terrible video. Princess of China is better, and that had Rihanna's Barbadian feces smeared all over it. The comic thing is the worst. The video is not really bad... but it doesn't feel like a real video, everything is just so "immobile", how can you call that an animated ? It feels like a comercial for the comic... I like HLH. The video isn't bad, but seems like it's simply promoting the comic, rather than the song itself. But, it could be our viewpoint. I never cared about comics all that much, so I'm not thrilled about the comic book, but I was hoping something better for the video. If that one is the actual HLH video then I'm really disappointed. I mean, the animation is well done and all but I don't know, maybe it's not my cup of tea, maybe I'm too old for this . I still love the song, though. People have different tastes/opinions. I appreciate the fact Coldplay are trying to create something different or new. It's always comforting to see your favourite band in a creative mood. The story seems cohesive and the plot seems strong, they match with the songs and all, but I can't just find the connection to it. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I like MX the album, but comic books is something I never really liked. The HLH video is intrinsically related to the comic, therefore, I don't really like it. It doesn't mean it's bad. As with any other video, some people will like it, some people won't. Take the Paradise video for example, I love it cause I find it cute and funny, some other people hate it cause they find it childish or whatever, it's just a matter of taste, that's all. its not just an ad, it a prequel to the comic book, telling the backing story first about mylo's parents. i can't believe people dont like this.. coldplay all together have worked really hard on this and the end result will be breathtaking, just because its different and defying the norm. everyone does videos of them just singing or playing instruments, But not this time. its like another strawberry swing, they're joining the ranks of the Beatles. A few months ago, when we learned about the comic book, I wasn't convinced at all, especially by the cover. It did seem a bit childish to me. Then when we got access to a few pages, I was convinced, and since then I've been very much looking forward to the release of the issues of the comic book. People who come here often knew already that it was going to be some sort of trailer for the comic book. Coldplay took a risk, as it kinda puts on the side fans who aren't into the comic at all. But then again, the only singles they've really promoted for MX are ETIAW and Paradise, so this video, the way it is, isn't really surprising. I mean that I don't feel like they were going to promote the song, the music anyway, so they used it to promote the comic book. And from what I've understood so far, HLH is meant to set up the context, the universe in which Mylo lives, so making the HLH video about the comic does make sense. I think the video looks very beautiful, although the pace, especially at the beginning, feels a bit slow for such an energetic song. Oh, and Car Kids! Car Kids everywhere haha!! To me it means they won't release it as a song at all, and the fact that it's been omnipresent on the artwork was probably just a reference to the comic, not the song. Overall, the video makes me even more excited for the comic! I watched the making of video and I couldn't help but laugh at the French accents! [thanks Coeurli]

Thought it was all-right, not really dissapointed. Much better than CB (which was the worst) and PoC (which was better than CB, but that's like saying garbage is better than shit, and at the end of the day, their both pretty rank). My only gripe is that the radio/music video is so short, only 3 mins (usually a radio song goes about 3 and a half mins, no?). They cut short the 2 guitar riffs/solos. But that's a minor thing as we already have the full song. To everyone saying it's an ad for the comic, so what if it is? That shouldn't really come as a surprise as it was already stated that the music video was going to be a prelude to the comic. And I don't see what's wrong with promoting the comic as its their comic which is related to their album. I mean, if it was an ad for some other random topic, then it would be perplexing, but it really wasn't. Even in some parts of the video, like at 1:19 in the video, their singing, "I won't let them take control" and their showing those army dudes walking/marching along, which shows that there is some sense of connection between the lyrics and the video. Also, the part right after that, where they sing, "feel a little bit nervous"...you have those two people (are they the Car Kids?) looking at each other and you can sense that "nervousness and not being able to relax" between them as they are being chased. That's just on the first watch, there are probably more connections. The static animation didn't even bother me either but hey, at the end of the day, if you hate, you hate it. Just pretend it never happened (in my head, the CB video doesn't really exist). At least we got the Coldplay Live Film to look forward too now... [thanks The Red Army]

Since the beginning I was never a big fan of the comics(although I will buy them when they're released) and this is also somewhat how I expected the music video , but it does seem more like an ad than a music video. I also hate it they shortened every awesome solo of Jonny. [thanks 42JTR]

I stopped caring that much about music videos when I realised that often after watching them, it changed the way I thought of the song. If I don't like the music video, I don't watch it again. I couldn't stand the Charlie Brown video, so I don't watch it. And Princess of China...well, I wasn't really expecting much from that video. But I actually like this. I don't need to think of it as a music video. I like the music to speak for it's self. I wish it was a bit smoother and was as energetic as the song, but all in all it's a cool video. (not much of a music video though). It's a good way to promote the comic book. So if you don't like it, ignore it. l like it and it looks like when they said that they were trying to do a animated film and this looks like that. It's promoting the comic, but so what. Hell the album is a year old, so I doubt they would still be promoting that. I'm not a huge fan of comics, but when I heard that they had one coming out I was excited, but then I realized I didn't like comics and stopped caring. Why is it that when and artist does something out of their comfort zone they're called a sell out. Guys, they're selling the comics for like $5, basically only people on these forums are going to buy it, and Coldplay are already super rich. I do not think they made a whole music video just to advertise the comics, even if this video does sort of advertise them. It's supposed to be a prequel to the comics, and that's what it is. The only part that advertises for the comics is the very end, but honestly I'm glad that part's in there, because otherwise how would anyone who's not a huge fan have any idea what that music video is supposed to be? I love the cominc book idea, think the ideas and animation is amazing... However, MASSIVELY dissapointed that the song was edited, I can never watch the video now without thinking about Jonnys solo etc that got cut! Best song from the album and they cut it to shreds! [thanks Jack1505]

Don't understand all the hate. :/ First of all, this is lightyears better than both the PoC vid and the CB vid. Second, it gives us much more insight about the story Coldplay has promised us over the past year (erm, we actually know what and who the almighty car kids are now). And finally, I don't understand why people are being so cynical and saying "Bahh Humbug! They're just promoting the comics!" In a sense, you guys are right, but saying that this vid is exclusively serving the purpose of promoting the comics really degrades all the hard work put into it. While the CB and PoC vids seemed uninspired and bland, this one I really enjoyed because it actually told a story. And I loved how it ended with little mylo in his room realizing what his purpose in life is. And the little hand print ----> awesome! [thanks aschall]

I really like the video. I mean it doesn't work like a normal music video with synching music to motion and stuff but for me that's fine. I really like the glowing colors and stuff and, of course, it's great to learn more about the story. Maybe I'm biased because I like to write comics sometimes but I think the comics are a good way to give another view of the album. This is like the prequel to the album (though maybe they should have made it the Car Kids music video). It confirms many of our predictions that Car Kids is the gang and I guess by wearing the name on their clothes all the time Coldplay must be Car Kids too. I personally wish they had fully animated it, but I can see why they did this semi-animated style. They had the technical ability, as shown by the gloopy bits during the solos and the marching shot. It's meant to be a series of kinetic, bullet-time sequences. I'm psyched for the comics, again, wish it had been fully animated, but I'm alright with this as the finished product. I've a few or maybe just a couple of things about the song and the MX era, depends on how tired I really am right now haha. Anyway, HLH is one of the few songs I like of MX so I am glad to see it got a release. Considering I got so excited for the release of MX last year and then felt so disappointed by the result, I cling to the songs I do like even more like HLH and UATW. No offense to those on this site but it even ruined Coldplaying.com for me for a long time too. So I'm glad that this track is getting heard/seen by everyone. I do like the video, think it's a good concept but lacks a bit of detail to the story they tried to tell. I don't like the future comics due to come out though, think it's a desperate way to get more money out of fans (but that's just my opinion). And it was mentioned in a few posts on this thread about POC being a better video and some disagreeing. All I'll say is everything about POC is utterly shit and it's the worst thing Coldplay have ever done and probably will ever do as a band. Coldplay's Latin American tour dates revealed by Vevo - announcement expected soon

A Latin American tour announcement moved a step closer last night as it appears that Vevo (a reputable source given that they control Coldplay's video channel on YouTube) revealed new tour dates online through their own website and mobile site. While the venues are the same as those previously rumoured back in mid-August, there are still discrepancies over the dates (see screenshots below/after the jump).

There has been no official word yet on the exact dates, but the countries most likely to be host to potential concerts following this latest discovery are still expected to include Brazil (3 dates), Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Peru seemed to have already been ruled out by a promoter recently. Hopefully we will get more more on any new dates soon - the 2010 tour in February/March of that year was announced almost six months earlier. -which means we are expecting an official announcement on the 2013 tour any day now.

Hope is building for Latin American Coldplayers. The Oracle said back in October last year, "There are no steadfast tour plans other than what we have announced. I wouldn't like to say yes or no but if there's a world tour coming, I'd be surprised if they didn't visit you again sometime."

And when asked back in 2010 after the Coldplaying boat trip, whether Latin American fans would have to wait 2 years after touring begins (as in 2007 and 2010) for Coldplay to come back to Latin America, fifth member Phil Harvey said, "We haven’t made any firm plans for touring yet. But personally speaking… I’d like to get back to Latin America asap."

The disc will include footage from Coldplay's shows at Paris's Stade de France, Montreal's Bell Centre and the band's Pyramid Stage headline performance at Glastonbury 2011. Coldplay's Live 2012 will be released by Parlophone on CD/DVD, DVD/CD, Blu-ray/CD and digitally. It is available to pre-order now. Read on for the rest of the official announcement...

We're very pleased to report that, on 19 November*, Coldplay will release Live 2012, the band’s first concert film / live album for nine years. It documents the Mylo Xyloto world tour, which has been seen by more than three million people since it began in June 2011. Live 2012 will be released on DVD/CD, CD/DVD, Blu-ray & digitally. You can pre-order it now from the Coldplay Music Store, with an exclusive hand-numbered lithograph poster.

Said Chris: “The Mylo Xyloto tour has been the most fun we've ever had as a band. It's felt very uplifting right from the start; partly because we are proud of the music, the LED wristbands, the pyrotechnics, the lasers and all of that stuff, but mainly because of the amazing audiences that we've been playing for. Over the years, our crowd has become more and more a part of the concert itself. They're loud, diverse, full of soul, and make the songs sound much better than we can on our own. We wanted to try to bottle the incredible feeling that they give us, and hence our concert film."

In the US, premium network EPIX will premiere the tour film as an EPIX Original Concert Event in the U.S. on November 17, on TV, online at epixHD.com, and on EPIX apps on hundreds of devices including Xbox consoles, iPads, iPhones, Roku players, and more.

The film was directed by Paul Dugdale, previously responsible for Adele’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall and The Prodigy’s Worlds On Fire concert films. Live 2012 includes footage from Coldplay’s shows at Paris’s Stade de France, Montreal’s Bell Centre and last year’s triumphant Pyramid Stage headline performance at Glastonbury Festival.

Live 2012 director Paul Dugdale said: “We wanted to make a film that was as intimate as it was epic, punctuating Coldplay's colour-drenched performance with candid portraits of the band. The set is curated from several concerts around the globe, using the 75,000-capacity Stade de France as the backbone. Reports: Coldplay 'Live 2012' DVD to be released on 16 November, featuring Paris, Montreal & Glastonbury footage

Coldplay's tour DVD 'Live 2012' (AKA #ColdplayFilm) is to be released on 16th November and directed by Paul Dugdale, according to reports out today ahead of the official announcement, also expected soon. The DVD is expected to feature footage from the Paris, Montreal and Glastonbury concerts. Read on for the said article, that originated from the Side-Line music magazine today. On Friday november 16 EMI will release the live Coldplay DVD and CD "Live 2012". It's the band's first concert film in 9 years and the film documents the band during their recent "Mylo Xyloto" tour. 'So what?' you'll say. Well, it was shot in Paris, Montreal and in Glastonbury by music video director Paul Dugdale who also produced The Prodigy's "Worlds On Fire" concert film.

Paul Dugdale: "We wanted to make a film that was as intimate as it was epic, punctuating Coldplay's colour-drenched performance with candid portraits of the band. The set is curated from several concerts around the globe, using the 75,000-capacity Stade de France as the backbone. Coldplay set to leave EMI after Universal's £1.2bn takeover includes Parlophone 'off-load'

European Commission says labels that are home to Coldplay, Blur, Kylie Minogue and others must be sold off

Universal Music has been given the green light for its £1.2bn EMI takeover by the European Commission, but will have to sell off labels, such as EMI's iconic Parlophone label, that bring in nearly a third of the British company's revenues – including recordings from Coldplay, Pink Floyd and David Bowie – in order to gain approval. The deal has already been cleared in Australia and Japan and was also approved in the US on Friday. Valuable EMI assets Universal will have to offload include the historic Parlophone record label – bar the Beatles – but also the British company's half share in the perennially popular Now! That's What I Call Music compilation series and its operations in 10 other European countries.

Universal said that despite the large-scale enforced sell-off – understood to account for 10% of the new combined business's global revenues and 30% of the existing EMI operation – the deal will still be financially positive and parent Vivendi is still supportive of the music group's management. But the approval process has been bruising for Universal, which has been forced to make far more divestments than originally expected and has required the Vivendi chairman, Jean Rene Fortou, to join the lobbying effort in Brussels alongside the Universal Music chief executive, Lucian Grainge.

"We are delighted Universal Music will retain over two-thirds of EMI on a global basis, contributing to the accretive nature of the deal," said a Universal spokesman. "With a broad array of EMI artists from Katy Perry, Emeli Sandé [and] Robbie Williams ... to icons like The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Genesis and Bob Seger, we remain true to our vision: to invest in talent and grow the company to offer consumers more music and more choice."

According to music industry sources as many as a dozen parties have already expressed interest in snapping up assets, including Warner Music and BMG Rights Management, the failed bidders for EMI's recording and publishing businesses. Universal will have to sell the labels to companies active in the music industry, or have a "proven track record" – and cannot re-sign any of the artists for a period of 10 years.

In the US, the FTC approved the acquisition with a unanimous 5-0 vote, with no remedies or disposals required. The deal has been approved by regulators by all relevant country regulators. Vivendi said that the deal would be able to "significantly strengthen its ownership of exclusive content".

In an email to staff the outgoing EMI chief executive, Roger Faxon, said: "With [EC] approval and the imminent clearance in America, as well as those already received from other regulators around the world, UMG has cleared the final hurdle in its quest to become the owner of EMI Music."

Meanwhile, Sir Richard Branson's attempt to buy back Virgin Records UK appears to have been thwarted, as Universal Music will not have to divest the business – although it is selling Virgin Classics. "Competition in the music business is crucial to preserve choice, cultural diversity and innovation," said the European Commission vice-president in charge of competition policy, Joaquín Almunia. "The very significant commitments proposed by Universal will ensure that competition in the music industry is preserved and that European consumers continue to enjoy all its benefits."

A major concern for the European Commission was the ability for an enlarged Universal Music to dominate the price of digital music, especially licensing deals with players such as Amazon, Apple, Spotify and Vodafone. "The commission's investigation confirmed that even a customer such as Apple continues to launch new digital music services and that it is not established that it could defeat price increase or other types of worsening of licensing terms by Universal," said the commission.

Bruce Kilpatrick, head of City competition at law firm Addleshaw Goddard, said that Universal had paid a "high regulatory price" but added that the impact of Apple on the music market also helped the deal go through. "With such an extensive remedies package, Universal has paid a high regulatory price for EMI. But it's important to put this into context: this deal would have been blocked 10 years ago, before iTunes was established, so Universal will still be pleased to have secured clearance and will be confident that it can make the deal work for the benefit of its shareholders."

As part of the deal Universal has agreed to drop the clause known as "most favoured nation" – which obliges digital customers such as Apple to extend any favourable term granted to rivals also to Universal – for 10 years. "This commitment will allow Universal's competitors to negotiate more freely with digital customers and further levels the playing field between these competitors and Universal," said the commission. "The commission concluded that competition on the digital music markets in the European Economic Area will be adequately preserved and that the transaction will have no negative impact on consumers."

It has come in for intense criticism from the independent music industry, which is concerned about Universal's global dominance, but there has been a positive response to Universal having to sell off valuable EMI's assets to push the deal through. "Universal are being forced to sell the crown jewels of EMI following their misjudged attempt to persuade the European Commission that there would be no competition concerns," said Alison Wenham, chief executive of the Association of Independent Music. "We congratulate the EC on a very diligent and thorough investigation."

According to the Music & Copyright Blog, Universal has an almost 36% share of total recorded music revenues globally, ahead of Sony Music on almost 22% and Warner Music on 15%. Impala, which represents music companies including Beggars Group, home to Adele, said the remedies were "not tough enough" and that Universal's "arrogance" had paid off.

"Universal's arrogance has paid off for them ... they have destroyed a significant competitor, and that even with these divestments their ability to dominate and control the market has reached even more unacceptable levels," said Martin Mills, chairman of Beggars. "Anyone trying to start a new digital service will be realising that very soon, and we will continue to look to the regulators to monitor ongoing behaviour."

EMI's Faxon said it will be "pretty much business as usual" for business units of EMI that Universal is retaining. However, the parts that are to be sold off, probably over a period of about six months, will be ringfenced as a separate unit managed independent of Universal. Faxon, who said he will step aside on 28 September when the deal is complete, said that an executive will be appointed in a few days to run the businesses as a "hold separate manager".

"His role is to be sure that these businesses continue to be a strong and competitive force on the market, through and beyond the point at which they are sold," said Faxon. "He will report to a trustee whose duty is to assure that the intent of the agreement with the commission is met".

Coldplay news round-up: Swedish House Mafia, MTV EMAs (vote), BBC R1 Teen Awards (vote)

Swedish House Mafia have announced their new album called 'Until Now', and the record, which will be the trio's second compilation, will feature two tracks by Coldplay.

The 22-track record will be the group's second LP and follows on from their hugely successful 2010 effort 'Until One'. The album will feature Coldplay's 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' and 'Paradise'. A collaboration with Tinie Tempah 'Miami 2 Ibiza' will also feature on the album as well as Usher and Pendulum. The group will release the album as the soundtrack to their final tour 'One Last Tour'. Swedish House Mafia will release 'Until Now' on 22nd October.

A reminder if you didn't know this week that Coldplay have been nominated for Best Rock Act at this year's MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) in Frankfurt on 9th November.You have multiple opportunities to vote for the band to win (you can vote several times a day by clicking here). DO IT! :)

Coldplay are up against Green Day, Muse, Linkin Park and The Killers. The 2012 MTV EMAs take place on November 11th in Frankfurt, Germany, and fans can vote in all categories on the EMA website until November 9th. Coldplay's Mylo Xylotour is no.1 on Billboard's top-grossing tours list at almost $100m

Coldplay is currently at No.1 on Billboard's latest ranking of top-grossing tours with a hefty box office total ($99.7 million) reported from the 2012 North American and European legs of the world tour supporting "Mylo Xyloto," the band's fifth studio set released last October. The tour launched that same month in Europe and continued through the end of the year, but did not resume in 2012 until mid-April with the kick off of the first North American leg.

Billboard continue: Edmonton hosted the British rock band for its first tour date of the year with a performance on April 17 at the 16,000-seat arena, Rexall Place. Five more dates followed at arenas in Canada and the western U.S. before the tour leg wrapped in early May with a three-show stint at the Hollywood Bowl. All three performances at the Southern California amphitheater were sellouts with almost 50,000 tickets sold for concerts on May 1, 2 and 4.

Two weeks later the band headed back to Europe to begin a three-week sweep through six countries to play stadium shows in nine cities. The first event was on May 18 in Porto, Portugal with a sellout crowd of 52,457 in attendance at the city's football stadium, Estádio do Dragão. The band played sold out concerts at stadiums in Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland before returning to its home country on May 29 with a performance at Ricoh Arena in Coventry, England.

Next on the schedule was a three-show run in London at Emirates Stadium on June 1, 2 and 4 with sellout crowds on each night. With attendance totaling 173,596 for the trip of dates, and an overall gross of £9.3 million ($14.4 million US$), Coldplay joins Roger Waters, The Stone Roses, Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen as 2012 touring artists that have scored a gross of $10 million (US$) or more in a multi-show concert engagement at one venue.

The European trek wrapped following U.K. stadium concerts in Sunderland and Manchester as well as a headlining slot at the 95.8 Capital FM Summertime Ball at London's Wembley Stadium on June 9. The North American summer leg began with two shows in Dallas at American Airlines Center on June 22 and 23 and wrapped with a two-show run at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center on August 10 and 11. During the seven-week tour leg through the U.S. and Canada, Coldplay played 15 arenas selling more than 413,000 tickets at 25 performances.

So far this year, in two North American legs and the first European leg, more than 1.2 million fans have attended the Mylo Xyloto Tour, generating the $99.7 million in worldwide ticket sales. The band is currently on the road in Europe through late-September and is set to play stadiums in New Zealand and Australia in November.

Coldplay to get huge back catalogue sales boost following Paralympics Closing Ceremony performance

Even the 2005 single Fix You, which was not performed on Sunday night, gets a massive chart jump

Following their performance at last Sunday’s Paralympics Games closing ceremony (September 9th), Coldplay look set to dominate this week’s UK Official Singles and Official Albums Charts, according to the Official Charts website today. [thanks Tash]

According to today’s Official Charts Company’s sales data, the band currently have nine tracks in the Official Singles Chart midweek Top 100 and all five of their studio albums are currently in today’s midweek Official Albums Chart Top 100. Of their singles, Princess Of China feat. Rihanna looks set to chart the highest, jumping from Number 51 to 29, while Paradise is up 52 places from Number 92 to Number 40. The band’s 2005 Number 4 hit Fix You is up a massive 97 places to Number 74 despite not even being played on Sunday night, while 2008’s Viva La Vida surges 148 places from 192 to 44.

Re-entering the Official Singles Chart from outside the Top 200, today the band’s 2000 Top 5 hit Yellow is at 58, 2002’s The Scientist is at Number 60, Charlie Brown is at 87, Clocks is at 91 and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is at 93.

Over on the Official Albums Chart, the band’s latest full-length, Mylo Xyloto, is on course to climb 14 places to Number 6, 2005’s X&Y is up 131 places from Number 194 to Number 63, and Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends climbs 138 places from Number 186 to 48. Both 2002’s A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Coldplay’s 2000 debut album, Parachutes, re-enter the Official Albums Chart from outside the Top 200 at Number 53 and Number 61, respectively.

Meanwhile, new figures out in the last 24 hours suggests that the UK viewing figures for the Paralympics Closing Ceremony peaked with 7.5m, forcing The X-Factor to a new five-year low. The spectacular finale to Britain’s summer of sport was entitled Festival of the Flame and featured performances from Coldplay, Rihanna and Jay-Z, with at least five million still watching at its end just after midnight, after more than four hours.

Coverage of the show, directed by Kim Gavin, begun at 7pm with an audience of 2.66m (13.02%) and climbed to 6.26m (23.98%) as the celebrations got underway at 8.30pm from the Olympic Stadium. The event hit a high of 7.48m (28.74%) viewers over the five-minute period from 9.05pm as Coldplay took to the stage for the first time, according to overnight Barb figures supplied by Attentional.

Paralympics Closing Ceremony review: Gentle, perceptive and emphatic... the greatest moment of Coldplay's career (9th September)

You didn't have to be a Coldplay fan to realise that starring in the closing ceremony of the Paralympics would be one of the crowning performances of Chris Martin and co's careers, writes the The Mirror in a review of Coldplay's performance at the Paralympic Closing Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in London last night (9th September). Superbly attuned to sensitivities of human achievement and endurance their questing songs were tailor-made for the patriotic atmosphere of communal celebration. An artillery of lights and effects are nothing without a regard for the human spirit and the better part of ourselves beating at its musical heart.

Gentle, perceptive and emphatic the band were everything the occasion demanded. Tenderly weighted to all shades of emotion, their spirit-raising anthems brilliantly built boldly – set up by David Arnold’s grand orchestrations and the dazzling spectacle of fellow Glastonbury regulars The Mutoid Waste Company. With their high profile pal Rihanna adding more stardust to the proceedings they pulled off the trick that has long defined the greatest pop music...

This was the sound of music to lift the world and open eyes to higher and better things. The all-star finale with the mighty Jay-Z in tow said it all – We Gonna Run This Town Tonight.

It was hard not to approach the Closing Ceremony of the Paralympic Games with some trepidation. The equivalent event at the Olympics had felt slightly underwhelming, perhaps because no spectacle could possibly live up to the athletic spectacles that had preceded it, partly because the air of mystery surrounding what was going to take place led people to expect a surprise that never actually came: if you'd listened to the wild talk of appearances by David Bowie and Kate Bush and holograms of Freddie Mercury, it was hard not to be even more disappointed when it became apparent what you were actually going to get was Jessie J.

The latter issue was circumvented here by announcing who was going to be performing in advance. Nevertheless, you didn't have to be one of those people who thinks Coldplay are the cloven-hoofed musical emissaries of satan himself to have been slightly concerned about how appropriate a booking they were. On one hand, they are one of the biggest bands in the world – a suitably global success for a global event – they stir vast stadiums full of people for a living, and it is a churlish character that claims they are anything other than very good at it. On the other, the key piece of music at the Paralympic opening ceremony – the track that seemed to hit on something vital about the Games to come – was Orbital and the Graeae Theatre Company's retooling of Ian Dury's Spasticus Autisticus, a song that is brutal, startling, furious and many other things that Coldplay's music are not. Thanks to their ubiquity on TV soundtracks – tinkling away as someone departs The X Factor or the DIY SOS tells their tragic back story – a lot of their songs have become musical shorthand for "oh, isn't it a pity", designed to elicit sympathy for whoever is on screen. The Paralympics have incited a vast array of emotions in viewers, but pity isn't among them, as anyone who caught a glimpse of the frankly terrifying wheelchair rugby will attest.

As it turned out, their set got better the more upbeat it became: the triumphant arena-filling guitar riff of Charlie Brown seemed to fit the event more than the more ponderous ballads, while it would take an effort almost as superhuman as the athletes had put in over recent days not to be moved by their collaboration with the Paraorchestra on Strawberry Swing, -– one of their loveliest songs, its melody boasting a subtlety that the bands' detractors would have you believe they don't possess – or the crowd singing along with Viva La Vida while fireworks exploded and confetti fluttered from above.

The staging meanwhile, felt noticeably darker, less cosy and self-congratulatory than the Olympic closing ceremony. There was a lot of stuff with fire and steampunk costumes, rusty vehicles cannibalised from old cars and farm machinery and people pretending to be crows on stilts. A seasoned festival-goer might note that it all had a whiff of the kind of thing you see at 3am in the outlying fields at Glastonbury: a definite improvement on the Olympic closing ceremony, which carried a whiff of a bad night at the Brits.

In the event that you felt bored by Coldplay, there was always something to distract your attention: ice skating, high-wire artists dangling from motorbikes, aerialists twirling from bunches of oversized light bulbs that sprayed out fire, people running out of the mouth of a giant fish carrying huge cardboard cutouts of insects on sticks. There was interpretative dance, which was nowhere near as disheartening as interpretative dance to Coldplay looks on paper. The same was true of Rihanna's solo appearance. We Found Love is a decent pop song that's become rather a victim of its own success: one way of giving it some added interest in the teeth of its ubiquity is to have her perform it while flying around the stadium on what looked like a vast garden swing.

The other special guest was Jay-Z. With Rihanna and Coldplay, he played Run This Town. Not the most obvious choice, but recontextualized by its surroundings it felt weirdly appropriate: as anyone who visited London during the Games and noted an almost tangible sense of excitement in the air knows, that's precisely what the Paralympics appeared to do.
