During the Ghost Stories Live 2014 release week, we have all received an unexpected and very welcome surprise in a form of an official music video for the third track off Ghost Stories, Ink. This is not just an ordinary music video however, it's a 'groundbreaking interactive story about a lost traveler who journeys to the ends of the world in hopes of finding his lost love' (Via Blind.com). Ink has been rumoured as the band's 4th single from Coldplay's latest album and has even received radio airtime on US stations along with BBC Radio 1 & 2. We could be forgiven in thinking that it wouldn't receive an official video other than Royal Albert Hall inspired live compilation which slotted in very nicely with the other videos from the artistic Ghost Stories era. The band visiting the fantastic well-renowned group of designers, Blind within their Los Angeles studios a few months back was a very purposeful meeting, judging by the outstanding video they helped to produce for the band.

The official video, which will be part of the Ghost Stories Live 2014 film set, has been edited by Phil Harvey we believe, in memory of the brave soldiers who fought during the first World War.

The montage is just that and to quote, "In memory of all those from all nations who fought in the first World War". We think it fits quite well and is a great tribute, featuring a song we never would of expected a video for prior to the Ghost Stories Live 2014 announcement.

The Munich Ticket Rush

Many Coldplayers, particularly from around Europe were part of the Munich show ticket rush early this morning! Tickets went on sale for the one-off live show in Munich this December. Tickets are priced at 100 Euro's each! (Just under £80 / $125) for an intimate setting at the BMW Welt in Germany, where the capacity barely makes four figures. The ticket sale was not announced by Anchorman on the official Coldplay social pages but as with all Coldplay concerts, it was a battle to get tickets and due to the limited numbers, fans who couldn't progress further than the ticket selection screen missed out.

Tickets are still expected to be released gradually over the coming weeks, as long as the status is yellow on the Eventim ticket screen. Congratulations if you managed to purchase tickets for the Live 2014 celebratory show! Tickets, as you may know, are not allocated so be ready to line up early for the front row's and chat to the Coldplayers also doing the same on our new meet up thread for Munich (please also read the sticky/announcement)

Coldplay's lead singer, Chris Martin and lead guitarist, Jonny Buckland wowed an audience in LA last night, in support of the AIDS charity, amfAR. The two Coldplay legends performed Viva La Vida and Paradise and gave the host of celebrities present a laugh as Chris was cracking out his usual jokes!

The host who welcomed half of Coldplay to the stage was none other than Gwyneth Paltrow! Chris' ex wife had nothing but words of praise for Coldplay's frontman as he was described as "Father Of The Year since 2004" and described the stylish Jonny Buckland as "incredibly talented". People.com described the moment when Chris introduced the pair as Bieber and Timberlake! The announcement of the BBC’s new music awards ceremony took place this morning, as tickets to see Coldplay perform along with the likes of Calvin Harris, One Direction, Ed Sheeran and more went on sale right away to the delight of many Coldplay fans who have a chance to be part of music history at Earls Court, London on December 11th!

Usually, an event with such a popular line up would be sold out almost immediately but with the instant release of tickets upon the show announcement, it was a calm ticket rush indeed on seetickets, the company who is not the most popular around these parts (Online mayhem for the Albert Hall tickets sale in June).

The BBC award ceremony is the first of its kind for the British Broadcasting Company and looks set to rival The Brit Awards, which has experienced a decline in viewers in recent years. The new BBC Music Awards are on a smaller but sweeter scale, with only the three awards : British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year and Song of the Year being given out. With the BBC having such a star studded line up (like the many stars who recorded the new BBC music anthem), they may become THE award ceremony in the UK, at the expense of their ITV rivals. Nominees (which will certainly include Coldplay in one category) and voting information will be revealed closer to the event itself.

The Ghost Stories artwork exhibition, announced by Coldplay and the Czech born artist, Mila Fürstová who has created the artwork we have seen throughout the 'Ghost Stories' will be on the way to London this December for fans to gaze upon!

The works on display will be up for sale, with the money raised going to Kids Company, the long term Coldplay supported group who work with vulnerable youngsters in Bristol and London. Coldplay have been donated to the registered charity which is 'close to their hearts' since 2007 and have donated over £1 million (est $1.6m) each year since 2009, according to reports.

Government funding cut for Kids Company

Unfortunately, some bad news was recently revealed for the future of the wonderful organisation. The UK government has cut back on funding to the charity, resulting in Kids Company, who employs 563 trained staff to plan for possible closure. This is taking into account Coldplay's donation of £1.3 million this year, which founder, Camila Batmanghelidjh had to ask for in advance just to pay the bills. She commented (from the London Evening Standard) :

She said: “I can only sustain it until the end of the year. There’s no way I’m going to continue without proper government funding.”

She said she was frustrated she had to “beg on behalf of society” for funding to deal with problems that should be paid for from public funds.

Ghost Stories artwork for sale!

However, all hope is not lost. The Ghost Stories artwork at the exhibition this December will be for sale, with all proceeds going to the Kids Company. Fingers crossed, this will help a great deal! Albumartists.co.uk previews a listing of items for sale at the exhibition

'The Oracle knows everything'. The Coldplay Oracle, the ultimate source of wisdom, answers fan questions on the official Coldplay.com website and runs #TeamOracle where Coldplayers across the globe can give advise to real world personal situations. Coldplaying.com takes a look at some highlights from the 'Ghost Stories' era (so far), revealing facts that may have gone un-noticed or making you think 'Oh yeah, I remember that'!

Ghost Stories facts

The oracle talks about Chris' magic tricks, the 'Midnight' promo release strategy, the apparent 'female vocals' on 'Another's Arms' and the out of focus image, one of the very first graphics to appear from the 'Ghost Stories' era.

10 April 2014 / submitted by Karolyn, Ecuador

Q. Hi Did Chris learned the magic tricks he did in Magic video? I mean, he really did that? Thanks, love you.

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

Chris was actually taught the magic tricks on set by magician, Joe Labero.

6 May 2014 / submitted by Johnny, United States of America

Q. I know Magic and A Sky Full Of Stars are the first two singles of the Ghost Stories era. What does that leave Midnight? How would this be classified?

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

Singles are usually taken from an album - but not always - and released for sale. Midnight was what they call in the biz, a promotional track.

The band premiered the video on the website but it wasn't released as a single. Promo items such as digital downloads are commonplace but of course in this case, there was also the limited pressing of a 7" for Record Store Day. That doesn't make it a single though - despite it having a video.

19 May 2014 / submitted by Helen, Australia

Q. Dear Oracle,

Is it true that the female vocals in Another's Arms are from Silver Chord by Jane Weaver?

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

I have known Jane for over 15 years and am jolly pleased to see people interested in her work after so long. Another's Arms does feature a small sample from Silver Chord but it's not Jane's voice as far as I can tell. I'm beginning to think that's a computer generated vocal.

July 30, 2014 / submitted by Maria, Bulgaria

Q.Hi Oracle!

I've noticed something a bit strange on the banner for Ghost Stories on iTunes - Chris' face seems to be blurred or at least not focused by the camera when the photo was taken. Is there a reason for this? Was it done on purpose for Guy, Jonny and Will to stand out?

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

I think they all look a little out of focus. It's just the way the photo turned out - probably because it was taken with little lighting. Incidentally, that photo was taken by Phil on his iPhone.

The humble beginnings

The Oracle tells us about the early band mechanics, from their early band names such as Pectoralz and Starfish to tracks like 'Brothers And Sisters'. Starting off with the unlikeliest of questions from our very own regular forum poster, Linus (before he registered on Coldplaying may I add! ;) )

March 26, 2014 / submitted by Linus, Sweden

Q. Dear Oracle,

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I would really like to know... Was Chris high/drunk when he wrote Ode To Deodorant?

Thanks,

Linus

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

Given Chris doesn't take drugs and rarely drinks alcohol, he was neither. I once asked Chris - granted, I didn't know him very well at the time - if the song was about drugs but it really is about deodorant.

9 April 2014 / submitted by Sam, United States of America

Q. Hello, Oracle!

A while back I saw something (that I believe Jonny wrote) that said at "Coldplay"'s first gig, they played one song twice because they only had a few songs. Do you happen to know which it was? Thanks!

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

On the 16th January, 1998, "Coldplay" played - under their previous name of Starfish - at The Laurel Tree, Camden.

The setlist was:

If All Else

So Sad

Panic

Vitamins

High Speed

An Ode to Deodorant

I'm afraid I don't know which song was played twice. If I find out, I'll update this post.

June 5, 2014 / submitted by M Davis, United Kingdom

Q. Is Brothers & Sisters considered to be an EP? Safety and Blue Room are listed as EPs on the website, but Brothers & Sisters is not.

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

That's because the Brothers & Sisters in our Recordings section is referring to the song - not the EP.

Fierce Panda released the Brothers & Sisters EP (which the second image in Recordings is of) and then a re-recorded version appeared on the b side of Trouble (the first image) released on Parlophone.

Rare and live

'Easy to Please', 'Twisted Logic', 'Rainy Day' and 'The World Turned Upside Down' are just some of the great Coldplay songs which were never played live. Oracle goes over 'Proof', the 'Crests of Waves' soundcheck in Paris and 'Prospket's March' during the Viva era. Both never made it onto the live stage, unfortunately.

19 May 2014 / submitted by Lea, Germany

Q. Dear Oracle,

did Coldplay ever played Proof live? I really like this song, it's not very popular, but very perfect. I can play it on guitar and piano now, it sounds fantastic!

Greetings from Munich!

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

Yes, Proof was played nut only a handful of times during March, 2003.

June 12, 2014 / submitted by Ma edeh, Iran

Q. Hi!

I just wanna know why Coldplay played Crest of Waves for sound check? Does it have a particular reason?

Thank you :-)

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

I was at the sound check in Paris on 28 May where the band played Green Eyes & Crest of Waves. Green Eyes was played later in the proper show - as it was again tonight in Tokyo.

Sound checks are a rare opportunity to try old songs and if they work out, they may make an appearance in the show or at a later date but sometimes they play songs at sound check just for fun.

July 29, 2014 / submitted by Raoul, Italy

Q. All-knowing Oracle, I think the only Coldplay song that has never been played live is A Spell, A Rebel Yell (which I love). Is there a particular reason? Will we be hearing it someday?

Keep on oraclin'!

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

There are more songs that have never been played live. Famously, Twisted Logic was never played on the Twisted Logic tour.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall ever hearing U.F.O, Up With The Birds, Ghost Story or All Your Friends played live either. I saw a clip of Prospekt's March at a soundcheck but not sure if appeared in a set. There are a few b sides unplayed too.

There's no particular reason - it can be one of many but it's doubtful you'll ever hear A Spell A Rebel Yell.

And finally...

Do you remember the news of Coldplay scraping their upcoming album inbetween the Viva and MX eras? The Oracle talks about this :

August 5, 2014 / submitted by Stuart, United Kingdom

Q. Is it true that the band nearly finished a new LP and then scrapped it to start again?

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

Yes but it wasn't Ghost Stories. It was after Viva, the (non) album before Mylo Xyloto if you will. They'd recorded many songs - most of which were more acoustic sounding than anything. They changed direction and the concept of MX was born.

'Home, home, where he wanted to go'? There seems to be a bit of a mix up between the classic films and the Coldplay eras!

18 March 2014 / submitted by Valentina, Denmark

Q. I was watching a recording of the Viva La Vida tour concert in Madrid and as the ET soundtrack music started I actually wondered why the band chose that particular track as introduction? Do they just like it or is there a reason that fit within the Viva thematic?

THE ORACLE REPLIES >

That music is not from E.T; it's from Back to the Future - one of the band's favourite films.

Jonas Åkerlund, who has directed two Coldplay music videos for the 'Ghost Stories' era, both 'Magic' and new single, 'True Love' tells us the story behind the larger than life music video. Jonas chats to Coldplay.com about Chris Martin's idea for trying out the audacious acrobatics during the 'Magic' music video, a Back To The Future reference we seem to have overlooked and Chris' charms bringing the Cloverfield actress to shoot Coldplay's new video. The interview is a follow up to part 1, where the Swedish director talks about the Magic music video.

A week ago, we had the first view of the behind the scenes filming for 'True Love', which you can watch below via Coldplay's official Youtube channel.

Having made the video for Magic, how did the True Love one come about?

Well, between these two videos, we kind of kept in touch. The editing took quite a long time and I also helped them with a campaign for Target.

Ah, did you direct the A Sky Full Of Stars advert?

Yes, exactly. So we stayed in touch and we kept talking and listening to more music and discussing what we could do. And then we started to talk about True Love. And it kind of came about in the same way as Magic did. One thing I said early was that I wanted it to be very different in tone from Magic. But related somehow because it has a story.

Do you prefer your music videos to have a story?

Actually I don’t prefer it, it’s totally what works with that specific moment and song. Obviously Coldplay’s music - at least in my mind - you really listen to the lyrics and you make up your own story. That’s what I’ve always done when I listen to Coldplay.

Where did the idea for the body suits come from?

Well, Chris actually came to me when we were shooting Magic and said he went to a circus show with his kids and saw these guys performing in these outfits. And he said, “I love it, we’ve got to do something with it!” So, I found the guys with the outfits and we created our own ones. But I wrote the story not really thinking about the outfits. I just wrote a story that I think worked for the music - basically a pretty simple love story. But then there were these outfits, which made it very different.

There’s a running theme in the video about life as a large person: not being able to get on the bus, or sit in your theatre seat. Is it meant to be an exploration of what it is to be overweight?

Well, the way we approached the story and this whole idea was way more about just being different in the world, where life is a struggle and then you meet somebody who understands you and then it all falls into place. Then you understand that they are very talented, and that together they are stronger. That’s what I was kind of going for as a message or as part of the story. I wasn’t really thinking about the overweight thing. Although of course when you say it, that’s what it’s about as well.

And like Magic it’s about a couple coming together with a happy ending. So there is a similarity with the narrative. Was that deliberate?

Well, I liked the idea of making two completely different videos in tone and look, but still have them kind of belong to the same family. That’s what I was going for. And we did the same thing with this one as we did with Magic, with me writing a proper short film script rather than writing a standard music video treatment.

And again Chris acts it well.

Yeah, absolutely. And all those years of yoga were paying off, because that outfit was pretty brutal to have on and then do all these tricks, like spinning around!

Ah yes, how does that spinning trick work?!

Well, I shouldn’t tell. It’s another magical trick!

Did you have a choreographer for this video?

Yes, we actually had one of the best choreographers in the world! Her name is Blanca Li. She’s a fantastic ballet choreographer out of Paris. And once again we were so lucky, because a few months ago Coldplay did one Paris show and I spoke to Blanca - who really is one of the best in the business - and I asked her on the phone if she’d like to go and see the show, and she was like, “Yes!”. So she went and she met Chris and they hit it off. And she then came to Los Angeles and helped us figure it out with these outfits.

And how did Jessica Lucas come to be cast for the female role?

Well, we knew we were going to be shooting in Los Angeles, and we wanted to cast someone from there. We actually did it like you would on a movie: we had a list of great actors and then me and Chris sat down and discussed it. And we got stuck on Jessica, because we’re both big fans of her movie Cloverfield. So I managed to get her to come down to have lunch with me and Chris. He put on his best charm and we got her!

Did you tell her about the body suits before she agreed?

Er, yes! Literally about halfway through the lunch I got out my computer to show her a photo. And we thought she was going to stand up and leave!

But she carries it off really well. You almost forget they’re in suits by the end.

Yes, absolutely. That’s a good effect.

How many of the suits did you make?

It’s actually less than you think. Three for him and three for her. He’s got his skateboard outfit, his janitor outfit and his tuxedo at the end.

The skateboard scene did seem like a dream come true for Chris as a big Back To The Future fan.

Yes! Exactly. We did it really early in the morning because we didn’t want any paparazzi to take pictures of it. That would’ve ruined it. We didn’t want any pictures of the suits to come out and people having opinions about it before the video was done.

Keeping videos under wraps must be a lot harder these days, with cameraphones and social media.

Well, for me, because I work so much in Los Angeles, I have the same crew, so I don’t get so much problem. But if you’re on location, there’s always paparazzi. There’s more paparazzi now in LA than anywhere else! So, yes, that can be a problem. But we got away with it for this one.

Before you go, we always ask Coldplay.com interviewees about their favourite Coldplay song. What’s yours?

I’d have to say - because of a long story - the Scientist. That’s probably a lot of people’s answer, but all I can say is that it was sent to me to possibly do the video and I had never heard it before. I was in a car in Sweden and just popped in a CD. That song was amazing from the first time I heard it. It just stuck with me. It became the theme song for me and my wife.

Coldplay release quirky music video for 'True Love'

Many of us have been waiting this week for the official video for Coldplay's new single, 'True Love'. The music video for the 3rd single off 'Ghost Stories' was surprisingly premiered at a later time in the day than previous videos and we finally got to see what the strange suit was that Chris Martin had mailed to him!. The Russian acrobat inspired video, which Chris Martin described as 'a bit silly' sees the singer and his soon to be ballet partner, dressed in larger than life sumo outfit which dominated the theme of the video.

Jonas Åkerlund is the director once more for the 'True Love' video, as he was for the band's 1st single from LP6, 'Magic'. Jessica Lucas is the co-starring actress alongside Chris Martin, who has appeared in popular films such as She's the Man, Cloverfield and That Awkward Moment. Like the video for 'Magic', it was acting based with a fun quirkiness about it but not the emotional heartbreaker the song itself potrays. This may disappoint fans of more 'literal' or 'emotionally tied' videos such as the ones for 'Fix You' and 'Viva La Vida'. The message broadcast was one of 'darkness turning into light' with the optimistic phrase 'Anything is possible' ending the sequence as it continued the positive and light hearted theme of the band's last three videos, after the first dark and mysterious 'Midnight' video. Watch the video for 'True Love' below.

Ghost Stories on Spotify soon & new LA show announced

Over three months on since the first release of the new Coldplay album, Ghost Stories, Anchorman on www.coldplay.com has announced the plans for the emotional sixth LP to be made available across major music streaming platforms such as Spotify. It's available immediately to stream through Beats music as part of the exclusive agreement they have for the announced LA show in September which was revealed today.

Ghost Stories on Spotify

Mylo Xyloto, when released, was not available to stream until four months after release and Ghost Stories is following in it's footsteps. There were rumours of Coldplay's latest album not even making a later appearance with other high profile albums such as Beyonce's still not available to stream. At the time of the Ghost Stories release, Spotify were working to reach an agreement to bring Coldplay's new album to their service.

"The artist or their representatives have decided not to release this album on Spotify. We are working on it and hope they will change their mind soon."

Why was this the case then? One reason could be the size of the royalties. Major artists/bands have criticized the streaming service for the amount they receive from having their work streamed. Holding back albums is another reason and it seems to be the promotion method for Coldplay's new album, where the record label concentrates on maximizing sales via iTunes and Amazon before allowing the streaming of the album. Adele's last album, 21 is also a prime example of this method.

Beats music, only available in the US, will be the sole streaming service until after the band's upcoming LA show, according to Coldplay.com

For the first time ever, Ghost Stories is available for streaming, exclusively at Beats Music (US only). Download Beats Music at www.beatsmusic.com.

Following Beats Music's exclusive, Ghost Stories will be released to all other major streaming services worldwide in the coming weeks.

Ghost Stories three months on

Now that Coldplay's 6th LP is over three months old, we would like to see what you think of the album now, further down the line. Your favourites upon released were O by a distance for 1st place, Always in My Head as a second choice and not much to choose between Ink and True Love for third place.

Coldplay release Ghost Stories, the album and the film!

Coldplay fans across the world were in for a treat last night and today, as the hype is now pure delight, beaming from the faces of Coldplay fans! Their sixth LP, Ghost Stories is now available to download worldwide

The Ghost Stories film / TV special was aired for the first time, in America last night on TV channel, NBC, planned just before Coldplay release Ghost Stories in the US and the UK. Sky Arts in the UK will air a making of Ghost Stories and a repeat of the film tonight, rumoured to featured additional tracks not shown on NBC! For times in various countries who have yet to air the film, click here.

The film was an smashing success with all fans! It started off with a serene moment as the large stone doors of the 'mega arena' within the film, covered in the wings of the Ghost Stories art, began to open and Coldplay performed Always in My Head to any empty arena as Chris began to soar into the air finishing on flawless transition which saw Chris close his eyes to magically appear within the magnificent 360 arena (which cost Coldplay over $4 million), as the band delight the clapping audience with Magic, the 1st single off Ghost Stories.

Next, Coldplay performed of the most powerful performances of Grammy winning Clocks which captivated the audience with the red lights and laser show. Clocks was followed by a warming speech from awestruck Chris Martin who explained how much fun it is to be a part of such shows and his gratitude towards the enthusiastic and friendly crowd in Los Angeles. The band went on to perform the beautiful True Love where Chris really channeled the emotions of lost love to the 'heartbreak beat' while Jonny's 'slicing solo' was a joy to behold!

The tempo was soon raised with the anthemenic, Viva La Vida which saw hundreds of lucky Coldplay fans jumping around, having the time of their lives and Coldplay making full use of the stage where the climax of the hit song, saw the roof begin to twist around. Pure delirium! Chris communicated with the audience after a small break, mentioning the band's fifth member, Phil Harvey and how they basically created the album in Guy Berryman's living room! The film was about to become even more cinematic the haunting voice on Another's Arms began to play with the woman underwater visuals we saw originally in the trailer appearing on the 360 screen. Around the middle of the track, Chris ran out of the Ghost Stories arena, out into the open, towards a road where he proceeded to catch a Taxi. Chris was on a mission towards a pier where Another's Arms ended to form a very intimate version of Oceans with just Chris, his guitar and a bench on the end of the pier!

The compelling moment on the pier ended as Chris decided to jump off, into the Ocean to which led on to A Sky Full of Stars back at the arena. The performance which we were about to see was talked about in very high regard by Coldplay fans who went to the secret filming back in March and they were spot on! The euphoria and energy, Will Champion's brilliant drumming during the wonderful performance was reflected greatly within the edit, as fans joyfully danced without a care in the world in a sea of star shaped graffiti!

Before the final song of the NBC version, Paradise, Chris gave his thanks to the rest of the band (including the handsome Guy Berryman!) and joked that he has finally introduced the band after 15 years! The boys then finished off with Paradise, which has been one of the highlights of the new tour!

Coldplayers were left quite puzzled after, as Midnight was advertised in the trailer for the film but was not shown on the NBC version! One of the new fan favourites, O, did not make the final cut either. I can confirm though that Canal+ in France did air the mentioned songs and Sky Arts are believed to be doing the same. To watch the Ghost Stories film, please visit our Coldplay multimedia forum (register on the top right of the forums). Versions of the film (hopefully the full film) will be available after airing in their respective countries.

Q. Hi Oracle, My fiance & I are getting married next August and we want to have Yellow for our first dance as a married couple. Are there any releases that feature an acoustic version we can buy?

The Oracle replies:

There are acoustic versions of the song around. The most notable being from Jo Whiley's Lunchtime Social session back in 2000. Whether you will be able to buy it remains to be seen but the track featured on Coldplay Acoustic, a promo E.P.

Q. I am a big fan of both Coldplay and Kings of Leon, so I was just wondering whether the bands are friends? And have they ever met?

The Oracle replies:

Yes and yes. Chris was a late comer to KoL but as I was at one of their first UK shows back in 2002 (yes, I am showing off), he and I used to chat about them when he discovered their music. They have since become friends and I believe, mutual fans.

Q. I just saw a picture in which Chris kisses Jonny. Is it real?

The Oracle replies:

That photo is from when Coldplay performed at the Hollywood Bowl, 2003. Someone (with too much time on their hands perhaps) has made it look like a longer kiss by editing the speed.

Q. Hey, so I was listening to Chris' interview with Howard Stern and he joking came up with a song called Play the Game by Howard's request. Now, that song was good and I could see millions of people liking it if Chris developed it more. So my question is why doesn't the band release more b-side songs that their true fans would absolutely love? I would love to know so please get back to me. Have a good one.

The Oracle replies:

Quality control, Michael! Are you SURE you think that was good? Chris was just mucking about. I'll be honest & say I disagree. Chris is more than capable of writing brilliant songs so I'm hoping he leaves those fun / off the cuff ones where they are. Now... B-Sides on the whole are on the decline due to the practical non-existence of the physical single. Coldplay aren't the only band not to have a plethora of B-sides from their most recent album. It's just a sign of the times but hopefully we will see more of them again in the future.

Q. Does the band ever experience stage fright or get nervous?

The Oracle replies:

The band don't have stage fright - that can be pretty debilitating as an extreme anxiety. They do get nerves but not before every performance - for example, the Paralympics Closing Ceremony was a big deal so they were nervous. That was more about getting it right and nothing going wrong than the size of audiences though. Generally the band get adrenalin rushes and excitement about playing live and it takes a while to come down from that after a show.

January 29, 2014 - submitted by Ayesha, United States of America

Q. Dear Oracle, It's that time of year again where I must search and search for scholarships and fellowships to help finance my higher education. They have the capacity to put me on track of the career choices I am bent on pursuing. This year I feel more confident being a college junior and having an excellent internship under my belt. However, I am not good at "selling" myself in my personal statements, and they are probably the most important parts of the applications. I've had to work two jobs for the past three years to help pay for college, so these scholarships could help me ease some financial stress off my shoulders. As I am somewhat lacking in imaginative writing skills, I am a bit worried about my chances. Do you have any advice on how to talk about myself and my potential under an imposed word limit while remaining honest and "myself" so to speak? Many thanks, Ayesha

The Oracle replies:

If you're so bent on your career choice, you will need to show confidence. Self-deprecation and humility aren't the way forward when you want to get ahead. I know it worked for Chris to a degree but in your case, you have to prove you want that place and are deserving of it more than someone else.

See this as your one shot - after all you only get one chance to make a first impression.

The key is to strike a balance as you don't want to be over confident - cockiness isn't attractive!

Here's what I suggest. Ask employers, colleagues, family, friends, peers & teachers if they're willing to say one positive thing about you. Compile these and work out a strategy of how to work them into your application. Good luck.

Q. Hello Oracle, I was always wondering what was said in the end of the song Yes and I just figure it out. Is Chris just saying random stuff or is he saying something? Please reply! I really want to know what it says :) Thank You Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

I can't help think you're confusing what's the end of Yes with what is in fact a hidden track - Chinese Sleep Chant. We haven't published lyrics to that song.

Q. Hi Oracle, I just saw a video of Coldplay playing Animals Live. I noticed Chris didn't have any shoes on??? What's that about?

The Oracle replies:

I chose this question for the simple reason that it amazes me how two people from different parts of the world can send in a question around the same time that both feature questions about videos that lead me to reply with clips from the same Big Day Out performance. How mad is that?!? You see, the question I previously answered about me seeing another live video of Sparks with Guy sitting down was

. It also shows Chris with no shoes on. If you were watching Animals live, I'm thinking it may have been like

from the same day. Spooky eh? Anyway, that means the answer to this question is: it was hot there back in 2001.

January 28, 2014 - submitted by Ben, New Zealand

Q. Hello! My question is about

(and others) of Sparks: Guy is sitting down. I've looked up a few videos of the song played live in that time era and Guy is always sitting cross-legged on staged. Is there a reason why? Although sitting down with a bass is slightly easier than standing up, I can't think of any reason why he would be sitting. What's your opinion on this? Big thank you!

The Oracle replies:

Sparks is an acoustic song so I can't think of any reason why Guy would be standing either apart from it's "usual". I personally never saw Guy sit on the stage in those days. I can only actually see two videos of Sparks from this time where Guy is sitting down. As both were in Australia, perhaps it was heat or jet lag? The clip you sent was from Australian TV on a very small stage. The intimate setting lends itself to a cross-legged performance. The other one I found was the polar opposite. The Big Day Out was in front of a large crowd on a huge stage. It was a stifling hot day and they were under the sun. Back then the focus was very much on the songs rather than the performance so curious as it may be, I'm afraid there's no story. Nice little video find though!

Q. I saw that the next edition of Q magazine will feature an article on Coldplay's triumphant return. Is there big news coming?

The Oracle replies:

The new Q magazine (issue 332 March 2014) has the headline "COLDPLAY - Q gets inside their triumphant return" on the cover. I can see why it is slightly misleading as it's referring to a past return, not a future one. There's a small feature about the Under 1 Roof gig from December. I suppose as it was the band's first live appearance in quite a while, it was billed as a return.

January 27, 2014 - submitted by Tahj, United States of America

Q. Oracle I have been a fan of you the first time I heard Clocks piano ballad, which, actually was about when the song was first released if I can recall. If I met Chris Martin in person I would ask him this question I'm asking you and that would be, what inspired you to make the song Clocks.

Tahj.

The Oracle replies:

Clocks isn't what I'd call a ballad, Tahj. I remember back in 2002 Chris mentioned that Clocks was inspired by Muse and their piano driven music of the time. In 2008 The Independent newspaper spotlighted Clocks in its Story of the Song feature which will tell you more.

Q. For the past two years I've had a crush on a guy, who (if I consider his personality would be the last person I'd prefer ending up with). I just can't get him over my head nor think of anyone else. He's the first crush I've ever had. I keep on daydreaming that one day he'll ask me out for a date and things like that. Am I really stupid? Please advise.

The Oracle replies:

Attraction is a funny thing. They do say opposites attract. We can find ourselves drawn to someone who annoys us or as you say is everything you'd prefer not to have in a partner. Who can say for sure what it is about someone. It may be chemical (pheromones), physical (appearance) or spiritual (auras) not to mention good old astrological signs. Whatever it is, ask yourself what would you say if he did ask you out? Would you say "yes"? If so, ask him out! You could be missing out on finding out why you have a crush - he may not be what he seems so perhaps don't judge him. Get to know him better and you may see a different side to him.

Q. Dear Oracley, last weekend me and my friends watched Coldplay Live 2012 (which btw is amazing), but for some kind of reason none of us could understand (or even translate) what Chris says at the end of the film. The only thing that we could figure out it was something about chocolate. Could you help us? It seems that Chris' super-british accent took us by surprise!

The Oracle replies:

I can indeed help. Chris says: "I'm going to celebrate the end of this video with a Cadbury's Button. Do they exist in the future? I dunno, me watching back this video outtakes, are you still eating buttons in the year 2032? Or have they come up with some new kind of new space food chocolate thing which you just inject through your nostril? Without the calories but with all the taste and flavour of that crunchy Button you're about to hear now (we then hear him bite the chocolate). Cheers. (he laughs).

Q. Oracle, please please please I beg you... Answer this question because the answer is killing me.

It is not Coldplay related... I went to see Let it Be musical. During the breaks, 1 fragment of 2 songs were played in the background (during the commercials). One of them is "I am a believer"... But the other one I have no idea what song it is. It sounds like Bob Dylan or Bob Geldof, I dunno. Do you know which song I am talking about? Gracias, merci, danke, thanks, arigato, tack :)

The Oracle replies:

I'd guess it's Bob Dylan because they tend to play music from a similar era during musical intervals. That said, I'm afraid I have no idea what it is. I was waiting for a film to start yesterday and heard some haunting music. I wanted to know what it was so I used the Shazam App to discover it was a piece from Sleepy Hollow. My phone was on silent of course and I always switch it off once a play / film / musical / gig is about to start.

Q. Hi there, I was wondering how to go about getting a valuation of the Safety EP. My copy is signed by the band members and contains a message from Chris that reads 'Dear Matt thanks for hanging wid us, lots of love Chris' (I did my work experience with the band in July 2000). I have never considered selling it but am struggling to pay my way through a second university degree. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Matthew

The Oracle replies:

You can get it valued by an auctioneer but it's likely the CD is valued at £1000 and the note probably at £500. Anyone who has sold a copy on eBay has benefited from starting at 99p with no reserve. Those that start higher with reserve, don't get half as much as it could fetch. NB: Just adding a note because I know there's part of this Q that will spark a question that I already get asked. No, the band do not offer work experience placements. This was back in 2000 and hasn't happened since, nor will it. Sorry!

Q. How many wedding proposals have you received?

The Oracle replies:

Are you proposing, Paul? Would you believe since my residency here, I have had one proposal of marriage and two offers of a lifetime of happiness - presumably without paperwork. Q. Hi Oracle, I was wondering whether you could recommend some bands or music? Lately I've loved listening to lots of melodic songs (this is the reason why Coldplay are my favourite band). What bands or artists would you recommend that I may not of heard of that are very melodic? Thanks, Andrew.

The Oracle replies:

In our end of 2013 Team Oracle, I invited everyone to share their favourite music of the year. Here and here are the links in case you missed them but I'll throw in some melodic artists that are new(ish) to 2014. Check out: Hozier, Rae Morris and you may like today's Hypnofeed - Longfellow.

Q. Hi Oracle, sorry for wading in on this one but I agree with Teresa about Guy playing keyboards on Speed of Sound. In the shot at 0.59 he is facing in a different direction to Chris and you can see his guitar.

While I hate to disagree with the mighty Oracle and will take any punishment if I'm wrong but please just take another look 'cos it is driving me mad as well now!!

The Oracle replies:

This is the final part of a Guy Speed of Sound video trilogy. When you see the video's stage set-up, there are two keyboards. The one on the left is the main keyboard that Chris plays, the one in front of Guy to the right is a synth. If you've seen the band live, this is usual. Three people wrote in to question my reply but if you re-read the question Teresa sent, you will see I am correct. The keyword was open and indeed the video does open with Chris on keys. Case closed.

Q. I'm making a short film for my audio/video production class and an upcoming film festival and I was wondering if I could have permission to use more than 30 seconds of the song, Fix You?

The Oracle replies:

No - well, not from us. Signed bands / songwriters do not own copyright to their songs so they cannot grant permission.
You'd have to get in touch with Parlophone Records and Universal Publishing.

Q. Hello Oracle, I was wondering if it is possible to read all of the Oracle questions and answers there have been. I was trying to find the very first Oracle entry and searched some with no luck. I'm not saying that I'm going to go back and read everything (or maybe I will), I am just curious when it started, how it started, and what it was like at first. Is there a simple way to read through from the beginning? Thank you for your time!

Q. Hello Oracle! Is this book official? Or reliable about Coldplay's story?

The Oracle replies:

There are NO official Coldplay books including this one. Martin Roach actually wrote the first unofficial book, Nobody Said It Was Easy, and Viva Coldplay is an updated version of that. I don't really want to advocate any of the unauthorized books to be honest. This Viva Coldplay book is what I'd call "copy, cut & paste" where all the information is already out there and has been put conveniently in one place. You won't see any exclusives and there is absolutely no involvement from the band.

Q. Once again not a question but a comment about Teresa from India's message about Guy, keyboards, and Speed of Sound. She may have been watching this video of Coldplay's performance on VH1 Storytellers during the X&Y era. It does feature Guy on piano which, Chris says, was "a rock and roll first." And a mighty fine job he did. Thanks and love, Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

Nope, Teresa was talking about the official video. In fact, she replied: Thanks for clearing up that Speed of Sound gaff Oracle! That was clearly my bad. I'll have to join you in detention then. I'm still confused by the shots at 0:34 and 0:59 though..is THAT Guy playing a second set of keys or do I really need new glasses? :) Sorry for the nagging questions! It truly is one of their best videos. Teresa, if you're reading this, maybe time for new glasses...

Q. Happy New Year Oracle! :) I have a question about Speed of Sound. Why does the video open with Guy on keys and not Chris? In most of the live versions I've seen, however, Chris begins the song on piano. Is there a live version with Guy on keyboards, as it is in the video? Thanks in advance! Love from India.

The Oracle replies:

Eh? Which video are you watching, Teresa? You can join me for detention (see last but one question). It doesn't open with Guy; it's Chris on keys. Maybe the lighting and haircut threw you. Videos aren't always factual by the way. There is an interesting fact about Guy and this video though. Mark Romanek who directed

Q. Not a question but a reply to the Beatles T-Shirt question. I thought it was to do with Red Nose Day as they were wearing the RND t-shirt which happened to have The Beatles on it. Thats all :) Mayur

Q. Hello Oracle! :) I was listening to one of my favorite Coldplay songs the other day, and I noticed when the lyrics: "There's a tiny little crackle on the telephone line, Saying what use the metal if the metal don't shine? She said bring me back a ring cause I really want one.." are sung, there is a very deep voice audible in the background. Who is that? I didn't think it was Chris because you can hear him singing clearly in his normal-high voice. (if you can see what I mean). Thanks so much for answering! Much love, Christianne

The Oracle replies:

We've had a similar question to this before. Unfortunately,

is one of those songs where it's hard to know who was singing what because there are so many voices. You can hear Will & Chris taking lead vocals and Jonny often sings low backing vocals (as do Will & Chris). In this case I'd assume you can hear Jonny & Will.

Q. Bonjour Oracle, Think this is an important question that 20,000 people want to know. At 02 concert in London, December 16, 2008 Chris, Guy, Johnny and Will wore a Beatles T-Shirt during the Encore... Why did they wear it?? Merci beaucoup...

The Oracle replies:

Other than the band being fans of The Beatles perhaps Sir Paul McCartney was in attendance. Other than that, this fact probably isn't the reason but is interesting nonetheless: Dec. 16, 1969, John and Yoko begin a worldwide billboard campaign with War Is Over (If You Want It), Happy Christmas from John and Yoko.

Q. Dear Oracle, During my free time in between classes at university, I usually sit in the computer lab in the department pertaining to my field of study. Yesterday a professor made a remark about my weight for the second time (the first time being in a full classroom). Although this time he was more subtle, his remark still really bothered me. I can't help but think that I should spend my time elsewhere to avoid running into the professor. Would I be right in doing so? And, should I respond to the professor or just be silent if it happens again? Thank you in advance, S

The Oracle replies:

I can understand why you are trying to avoid your professor, but it's not right to avoid him. His behaviour is totally unacceptable. You need to address the situation to resolve it. I don't think you should stay silent. The way I see it, you have two choices, you either go to the headteacher or you respond to it. Whether you say it privately now or publicly the next time it happens is up to you. Maybe even take a friend with you if you decide to confront the situation but either way, you say loudly, clearly and assertively that you find his comments offensive, inappropriate and unprofessional. Tell him you will not tolerate it and won't hesitate to report him if he continues to make personal comments.

In the meantime, it may be worth speaking to people who were in that full classroom to see if they'd be willing to confirm what happened if you take further action. Personally though I'd be going straight to the top. I know that might make classes awkward but that's his problem, not yours.

Q. Hello Oracle how are things doing? :) So, I was searching for tweets with Guy Berryman and found this. Is it related to Coldplay? Much love =D

The Oracle replies:

There are a few Coldplay related links. Glenn Moule is the drummer with the band Howling Bells. Howling Bells were fans of Coldplay. After hearing Coldplay's AROBTTH, they coveted Ken Nelson as a producer. Indeed, they ended up recording their debut album in Parr Street Studios with Ken producing. The band then went on to support Coldplay a few times and they became friends. Just before the North American tour, Anchorman interviewed Juanita Stein here. It just so happens Juanita contributed vocals on Up With The Birds. The tweet you ask about was posted back in May 2011.

Q. Hi all-knowing Oracle, A question about the Paradise video. Why does Chris Martin in the middle of Africa riding a unicycle come out of character and take his elephant head off? Take care, RK from Canada.

The Oracle replies:

Because it was blooming boiling hot in that suit - especially in the heat of the weather! I think the real question is why it was included in the video. There were discussions about keeping Chris' identity anonymous but there was also the feeling that perhaps people wouldn't believe it was really Chris unless they saw him so the decision was made to keep that reveal in the video.

That's an interesting question for what is most people's first Monday back at work & school. It will give you some insight to the role of Oracle. I don't avoid difficult, painful questions that may evoke sadness or reignite a bad memory. Life is a journey and whether we're sharing our favourite music (see the last two Team Oracle's) or opening up our emotional wounds, we're all in this together. The Oracle replies:

Well, my film viewing experiences can be broken down into categories but the "best" film I have seen wasn't my favourite: Favourite film seen at cinema - Alpha Papa; Worst film seen at cinema - Hangover III; Best film seen at cinema - Gravity; Favourite box office film watched at home - Behind the Candelabra; Best cinema visit - Catching Fire premiere. Q. Dear Oracle, I'm a 19 year-old guy from the Netherlands. I'm a bass player. But it feels like I'm in some kind of trouble. Since two years ago, I started feeling different. I don't feel like I'm completely a guy, but I'm afraid to show it to everyone. This is not a good thing. These feelings are increasing, and it's hard for me to hide them, yet I have to. I want to feel free about myself, but I'm afraid nobody will like the true me. What can I do?

The Oracle replies:

If you don't feel you have anyone to confide in, there are organisations that can help you deal with gender identity issues. There are some local to you too & will treat your call with confidentiality. Remember, you're not alone. Above all, never be afraid to be yourself.

Ooh I'd totally forgotten about that Christmas message. I was thinking as we've had a couple of Christmas song questions recently (well it is less than ten days away) the band have performed enough to give people a Coldplay Christmas fix: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Last Christmas, White Christmas, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Jingle Bells and of course Christmas Lights.

Hellow I'm very very frustrated because in tumblr someone put a photo of some cd's and dvd's of Coldplay and I saw a cd next to the left right left right soooo I want to know which see the is next to left right left right I want to know which cd is. Here is the link of my tumblr - is the second picture. Please help me to find out the name of the cd. Thanks. The Oracle replies:It's not the second photo now as I didn't answer this immediately but the cd next to Leftrightleftrightleft (you missed a "left" off) is a bootleg. I can see the cover is a black & white MX era photo but I'm afraid I don't know what the CD is as it's unofficial and therefore not one of our releases.December 12, 2013 - submitted by Ed, United KingdomQ. I know you have said that you wouldn't tell us the set list for the Under 1 Roof show, but can you give us a pointer in how long it will be and when the whole concert will finish? Cheers. The Oracle replies:Wouldn't if I could but couldn't because I don't know. The Eventim (pka Hammersmith) Apollo probably has an 11pm curfew so there should be plenty time for everyone to make their onward journeys home. There's a lot to fit in but Coldplay will be on for an hour. I'll leave it to Anchorman to give the full who's on when list of stage times.December 12, 2013 - submitted by Tori, United States of AmericaQ. Hey Oracle, I was wondering what the name of the egg-shaped guitar Chris uses in this performance of Yellow was? I believe it's also one of the guitars that the band the Rolling Stones used. The Oracle replies:It's been a while since I answered this question. I first replied to it in 2009 and again here in 2010. And yes, here is Rolling Stone's Brian Jones playing one.December 11, 2013 - submitted by Luiz, BrazilQ. Hello great Oracle. Now that Coldplay left the EMI label, which label can we contact if we need information about the band? Thanks!!!The Oracle replies:The band haven't left EMI; Parlophone (the band's label) is no longer part of EMI but the band are still on Parlophone. It's not usual to contact the label for band information. The label have a website with info of course but it's here - the band's website - where all information can be found, including contact details. Facebook & twitter are also good places to leave messages or find out info.December 11, 2013 - submitted by Grace, AustraliaQ. Hello Oracle! You recently answered a question about the Shiver lyrics. I had honestly never thought about it like that, I always thought it was a question rather than saying don't shiver. But now I'm a little confused, the lyrics are "Don't you shiver", which without commas is "do not you shiver", which doesn't makes sense... Am I wrong, because I think that'd explain a lot ahaha thank you and I hope you can understand my explanation! (p.s I'm sorry if this is a silly question!!)The Oracle replies:Hello (again). You mean the apostrophe. It's true an apostrophe replaces the letter o but it doesn't have to be taken literally or rather, gramattically. We simply do not go around (see what I did there) necessarily saying things in full or with regard to the sense without that apostrophe. To illustrate what I mean, The Human League had a massive hit in the 80s with Don't You Want Me. Nobody would say "do not you want me?" but somehow it works with the "don't". There are many examples of apostrophe use that challenges the rules.December 11, 2013 - submitted by Grace, AustraliaQ. Hello!! I'm not sure about you but I really love animals. I know Chris has a white little Maltese dog called Daffodil! But I saw this photo of Phil (Hi Yasmin!!) and I was wondering what the name is of the gorgeous black kelpie of theirs? Also is that Daffodil behind him/her? :) Thank you so much OracleThe Oracle replies:I have no idea who that dog is. It may be a family dog but it definitely isn't Phil's dog - different breed and colour. That doesn't look like Daffodil behind - I don't even think that's an animal.December 10, 2013 - submitted by Reyes, SpainQ. Hi there! I was wondering, did Chris know how to ride a monocycle before the Paradise video, or did he have to learn? Thanks very much, lots of love from Spain! The Oracle replies:Yes, he did. Mat Whitecross mentions the fact in this interview along with more interesting facts about the Paradise video.December 10, 2013 - submitted by Marianna, BrazilQ. Why the song Shiver doesn't have the interrogation point at the of the line on the chorus: 'don't you shiver'??The Oracle replies:If I said to you "don't you worry" that's obviously different to "don't you worry?" There's no question in Shiver. It's saying don't shiver.December 10, 2013 - submitted by Millie, United KingdomQ. For the under one roof concert, do you know Coldplay's set list? I'm not going, unfortunately... also, is there going to be a live stream? Thank you Oracle! :)The Oracle replies:I'm afraid we won't be announcing the setlist in advance - I honestly don't know it but as per, if I did, I wouldn't say. We're not streaming it but I'm sure we won't keep you in the dark.December 9, 2013 - submitted by Philippa, United KingdomQ. It's almost Christmas and I'll be playing Christmas Lights on repeat. I'd like to add Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas to my playlist. Any chance of a Mince Spies re-release? PLEASE!The Oracle replies:I'm afraid not. This time of year is when I get asked this question the most - not surprisingly - but it's not likely to ever see the light of day as a re-release. It is a rare item from their very early days and I think that's what makes it a very special item. I just looked and there's one on eBay but it may set you back a few quid.December 9, 2013 - submitted by Sagnik, IndiaQ.

Confusion reigns today as Coldplayers try to work out whether we will see Xylobands appearing at future Coldplay shows. If you haven't read the latest, let's recap:

On December 8th, Jason Regler tweeted: "looking like the Xyloband and Coldplay Journey is over!!! time move on" indicating that the Xylobands creator would be no longer involved. But he stopped short of saying whether Coldplay would continue with Xylobands during live shows.

Then he tweeted: "My bad mistake rush Blood XYLOBANDS are Coldplay and so wont be going anywhere a mistake emotions can run too high" which appeared to suggest that Xylobands would continue on the next tour. Both tweets were later deleted, along with Jason Regler's Twitter account.

On December 9th, Coldplay's Oracle was asked:

"Do Coldplay use xylobands only in MX tour or they will use them in next shows as the part of every Coldplay show?"

to which came the following reply:

"There's a clue in their name - Xylobands. They were brought in for the Mylo Xyloto tour as the perfect compliment. The MX tour was very vibrant, full of colour and reflected the look of the album which as you probably know was heavily influenced by graffiti and its fluorescent / dayglo feel. I always assumed they would be retired once the tour was over as then the band would be moving into a new phase."

This Oracle answer was also later deleted. It appeared we were none the wiser.

Then, on 10th December via the Keep Xylobands For Coldplay Facebook page, Jason Regler appeared again and shouted: "XYLOBANDS ARE GOOD AND STAYING WITH COLDPLAY _ WILL BE BETTER AND LOTS NEW TRICKS COMING _ SPREAD THE WORD ITS ALL OK."

Here's the screenshot:

Your selected comments on the Xylobands saga are below. You can add to the discussion here (random Coldplay thoughts), here (Jason Regler's tweets) or here (ask the Oracle) or via the Facebook comments section below...

It looks a little fishy, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the case. Because why would the Oracle answer be deleted? It's almost like someone higher up the chain told both the Oracle and Jason to delete any record of the Xylobands being retired, because something might be in the works for the future, and Jason being the emotional type just flat out deleted his twitter because he didn't know what to do. It's not like the band has control over his personal Twitter account. Unless they have some kind of ownership in his Xylobands company or something? I'm really not sure what the deal is here. Why wouldn't Jason just delete the tweets if the band didn't like what he posted? I had a feeling this would be the end of the xylobands. Bittersweet for sure, but I think they'll do something else to blow our minds on the LP6 tour, as always. [thanks Heavensbee]

The [Xylo]bands were part of the MX production, I'm not really sure why so many assumed they'd be around in perpetuity when the production elements have always changed when the band mounts a new tour. To me the band probably became a bit too gimmick based for their own good over the last couple tours. They're an excellent live band, they don't need all the tricks if they just play hard every night (which for the most part they do). As I understand it, the band do (did?) have a partial stake in Regler's company. As you say though that the band has no authority to delete his twitter account, though a few of his latest post are verging on the sort of thing that can get you a cease and desist order if you are dealing with someone who wants to play hardball. I would guess he deleted it himself for reasons unknown. [thanks fakfak]

Yeah he first sent a couple of tweets, it felt nostalgic but, you know, alright. And then it got weird. The response from fans on Twitter almost got aggressive towards Coldplay. What I loved the most about xylobands was how the band achieved to get the entire audience really involved in the show, which made traditional visual tricks quite frankly boring. I hope they'll find a way to keep that level of interactivity with the audience for next tour. If they don't, then they're going to have to step up their game live. Not that Coldplay concerts weren't amazing already without the bands, but now everyone, consciously or not, has even bigger expectations. They were a great live band, but with MX they've become an innovative and inspiring live band. If they don't find something new, they have to be mindblowing, better than the previous tours, on their own. [thanks Coeurli]

My favorite coldplay show was still the one I saw in Toronto in September of 2002. No special effects, no wrstbands , no nothing. Just 4 amazing musicians playing together. If the wrist bands are gone I will miss them too, but fans will be able to go back to the way things used to be where they realize it now or not.:-) [thanks TraceOddity]

In the event of #RIPxylobands, let's enjoy the memories:

Q. Did you ever have to interrupt a show because of an annoying fan? If not, what was the weirdest fan demand you guys ever received?

The Oracle replies:

Yes! Well, that sounds awful so I shall rephrase it. Chris & Jonny were performing at the Little Noises charity event. As Chris started playing The Scientist, a fan up on the balcony began tapping a tambourine out of time. It was very off putting so Chris paused and asked them to stop. As it's a "yes" that makes the second question redundant. Phew.

Q. Hi after missing there last show in Sydney due to a bad accident at work I'm desperate to see them especially after watching the amazing live dvd. I'm thinking about coming over to England for the Under the Roof show will it be a normal length set or will it be shorter than it usually is?

The Oracle replies:

I'm sorry Jamie but the show sold out. As for the length of Coldplay's set... It's - as you know - a charity event and so hopefully everyone is there to support the great cause and enjoy the music / comedy / magic as a whole. After all, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That said the last Under 1 Roof show was pretty much a full set.

Q. Might be a little bit weird question, but I was wondering if Coldplay writes something on their facebook it gets over 30000 likes and looots of comments in no time. How does their profile react, I mean do they get like thousands of these little pop-ups on their screen at once?

The Oracle replies:

We don't get notifications so no, that doesn't happen. It would be non-stop otherwise. All the comments are read but usually in one session rather than as they come through.

Q. How many music videos have Coldplay made? I know they don't have a video for every song but how many are currently out there? Thanks, Maddie.

The Oracle replies:

I've not counted any live videos but have counted when there are 2 for some - Trouble, Violet Hill - and I make it a total of 28.

December 4, 2013 - submitted by Fred, United Kingdom

Q. Heyy, So I recently got interest from a very large independent label. They said that off the back of my music they would sign me but due to fanbase I'm not signable as of yet. They put me onto a smaller label. My question is that I can't seem to find any bands who have really really made it who are on an independent label. The first label I was talking about said they do a 3 year deal. However, if the first label don't actually get me out there then I may be stuck with them for the 3 years. Should I go with the independent label and then not possibly get signed to a bigger label e.g. Parlophone, Universal. I need help, thanks.

The Oracle replies:

I'm going to get a little tough with you here, Fred. Brace yourself. You don't seem to be remotely excited by the opportunity you have - whether you take it or not. It's great to have ANY interest and offer. If you're not signable yet but have been offered a 3 year deal (er, isn't that therefore signable) it seems to me, they have hope for you. As a very large independent with a smaller label, they're not insignificant. I would hope you would have done more research than it appears. Who else is on their roster? What success have they had previously? Who are you working with? What are their strategies? If you haven't asked yourself any of these questions for starters, maybe you should. Oh and if you can't find bands who have had success through smaller labels, you're not looking hard enough! Now to you... they obviously see some potential in you but they are right. You have no fan base and that will not come just by signing a contract. There is hard work to be done and not just by them. It's as if you think the label are 100% responsible for your fanbase but they're not; you are too! You've got to crack on & write some great material. Radio won't play you and press won't write about you if they don't know who you are so getting fans will help spread the word. 3 years may seem like a lifetime but try to be patient as this could be the exact right route for you. I shall impart another pearl of wisdom. I asked 2 heavyweight managers the same question (on two consecutive days) and their answers will probably confuse you even more but I say there is no right or wrong - go with your gut. "If you were offered one deal but it wasn't the right one, would you take it if it was the only offer you had?" One said no, he would hold out for his artist even if another deal never came. The other said yes, a deal is a deal - take it.

Q. Am I allowed to name my album Canoe?

The Oracle replies:

Er, yes if you want to. I suspect this is a case of lost in translation. Usually when I am asked, "can I call my album...?" it means there has been public speculation about a Coldplay album name. The only connection I can see between Canoe and Coldplay is an article that appeared a couple of weeks ago in the Canadian publication Canoe.

Q. What Metallica film was Chris talking about in this interview?

The Oracle replies:

The interviewer does say the name of the film but you must have missed it as Chris starts answering over it. Some Kind Of Monster is Metallica's documentary film from 2004.

December 3, 2013 - submitted by Forrest, United States of America

Q. Did Chris and the band ever write songs keeping in mind they would be played in large arena type venues? Coldplay's sound has obviously progressed into something more appropriate for those larger shows so I was just wondering if that style was there at the beginning, or if their success was a catalyst for it. Thank you Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

You're spot on, Forrest. They don't write songs in a colour by numbers way but yes, they are very aware of where their songs will end up being performed. It's an interesting progression when a band starts to play arenas and stadiums as not all songs will work in those spaces. That said, if the band do write songs that don't fill the big venues (acoustically speaking), they can adapt by performing them on the smaller B & C stages as they have been doing on the last few tours - 'Til Kingdom Come, Up In Flames, Us Against the World et al.

Q. Hi! Yesterday I found a Coldplay Live 2006 in Toronto, and at the beginning it said that was a production for Parlophone, so I think is kinda official, and by the way is a very good video. So my question is Why is not in Recordings or wasn't released like the Live 2003 or 2012?

The Oracle replies:

That DVD should not be available anywhere. It was never released and therefore I'm afraid the copy you have is an illegal bootleg. That's why it's not listed in the Recordings section.

Q. This is Coldplay related btw. I feel like Coldplay and the fandom is literally tearing me up. Since I started liking Coldplay my sisters have hated me because they're into heavy stuff. I don't know what to do :( I miss being close to my sisters.

The Oracle replies:

I find it sad yet weirdly natural that music divides people so much. I get a lot of letters from fans who struggle with their friends or family having different tastes but diversity is a good thing. I'm not sure why those differences turn nasty though. People could learn to respect the passions of others. How about you ask your sisters if they could recommend a song they think you might like. In turn you could perhaps play them the live version of GPASUYF from the last tour or Daylight. If that doesn't work, are there any other things you all like that you could spend time together doing? I know it won't help you right now, but hopefully it's a phase that will pass and one day soon you'll get on in spite of your musical preferences.

Q. Hi Oracle, This is Harry Styles but is that Will Champion's elephant head from Paradise?!

The Oracle replies:

The costumes in the Paradise video were not bespoke. They are universally available as a generic fancy dress prop so no, it's not any of the band's elephant heads - just the same design.

Q. I know you've responded to 9 questions thus far referring to the B-Side The World Turned Upside Down, but I just wanted to take a stab a guessing what the mystery lyric is, because I think I finally figured it out. My guess is that it's: "Searching the meadow well it's ecstasy (ah ah)." Thank you and have a wonderful day! -D

The Oracle replies:

As I mentioned before, Chris doesn't even know what he's saying so it's not a mystery that's due to be solved anytime soon despite multiple guesswork from all over - including my own that as you know was initially what started this particular ball rolling when deciphering lyrics for the website's lyric section quite a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it's not what you suggest but most of us seem to think the first part is "searching your mellow".

Q. Hey Oracle! I'm in a major problem. The thing is that for my birthday a friend gifted me a Limited Edition of the Coldplay cd's, (from Parachutes to VLV) which, was kind of a little bit expensive. For my surprise my family gifted me the same package of cd's. What should I do? Gift them to someone else? Also, I don't have enough space to place EIGHT cd's. Thanks in advance!!

The Oracle replies:

Ooh aren't you lucky? That's a nice problem to have - sort of. Well, you could sell one set on. Or you could gift it. Or you could explain to your family & friend what's happened and ask if they'd be ok with you exchanging the CDs for something else. These things happen and I'm sure they'll understand. There is no point keeping both sets as they're not collector's items.

Q. Hello Oracle, we've got a strange question :) does Chris was riding on a bike around National Stadium in Warsaw during Coldplay's visit in Poland last year 19.09.2012 ?? Thanks for answer, it's really important to us :) Love, Ilona and Przemek.

The Oracle replies:

I'm not sure but it's possible. There are bikes backstage to make it easier to get around but it's not usually the band riding them. That doesn't mean that on the odd occasion they haven't. I'll ask around but it may not bring further answers. FYI the bikes were painted bright graffiti colours.

Q. Hello Oracle, I managed to get two tickets for Under 1 Roof (I can't wait). However, I was wondering if you know what the band will be wearing? Will it be Mylo Xyloto related or Lp 6 related? I have my own MX jacket I have made, I wore it to their gig last year and I was going to wear it again if they were going to 'suit up' as well :) Many thanks, Harvey

The Oracle replies:

I think you should wear it regardless though as it's been 2 years since the end of the MX tour, I very much doubt the band will be wearing their MX outfits for the charity show.

Q. Hi Oracle! Do you recognize us when we have asked something more than one time? Also, Will you ever tell us who you are? Viva Coldplay! Saludos, gracias!

The Oracle replies:

Although I pay attention to names, it doesn't influence me as it's likely that there is more than one person with the same name from the same country. Obviously if somebody says, "Thanks for answering my question, I have another"... The thing is, I try to only reply to one Q per person to make it fair. Occasionally I will see someone has sent two and edit it to show both and reply to both. It's hard to ignore a great question regardless. (No).

Q. I went to see Catching Fire last weekend and heard an instrumental version of Atlas in the middle of the movie. Is it recorded by Coldplay? And is there a full version? Thanks

The Oracle replies:

James Newton Howard scored the film and - as I have mentioned here previously - the incidental music featuring components of Atlas is called We’re A Team. It doesn't appear to be on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Q. Hello Oracle, I have never been in a serious relationship but I think I am falling for one of my good friends. The problem is, he has a girlfriend. I know I should probably just ignore my feelings but I have never felt the way I do around him before. I'm scared that if I don't do anything he'll forget about me. I just have this feeling that we are meant to be together and I think he feels it too. What should I do?

The Oracle replies:

Personally I think you should do nothing - he has a girlfriend. If you think he feels the same, it's up to him to do something about it. The reason I say this is trust is a fundamental part of a relationship. If you two start something or behave inappropriately behind his girlfriend's back, chances are IF you ever get together, you'll have mistrust from the start. Perhaps what you could do is walk away and tell him that you're giving him space to work out his feelings. You don't want to get hurt so put some distance between you and see what his next move is. If it's meant to be, he'll come to you.

Q. I have a Scientist single DVD, but the cover is black, and on the website, under recordings, the cover is white, and I know that the white one is a cd. Was it only released in certain countries? (Also, when I put it in my DVD player, it said it couldn't play because of limitations, does that have to do with the whole releasing thing?) Much appreciation! Have a great day!

The Oracle replies:

The website is showing the CD, not the DVD and its sleeve is white. The DVD cover is black - as you know. DVDs are released according to regions. If you're in the USA (region 1) trying to watch a European release (region 2) you'll have problems. Depending on where you live will depend on what DVD will play, though there are DVD players that allow you to watch region 0 which is almost region free.

Q. Greetings Oracle! So... I've been to many a few Coldplay concerts and it just occurred to me, what do the boys do after they're done performing? Are they totally exhausted and ready to hit the sack, or are they pumped with adrenaline and extremely energised? It seems so crazy to play as much as they do consecutive nights in a row. I remember one show Chris changed his shirt because he was sweating so badly. How do they not lose their hearing due to the extreme loudness? My dad always gets mad at me for not wearing plugs to a concert for the fear that it will ruin my hearing haha, but I just can't imagine what the band is actually going through and how the music may affect their own. Also, it seems like performing at concerts is a good workout... haha! Chris jumps and sweats like a maniac! Hats off for him - he's incredible, as well as Jonny, Guy and Will. It wouldn't be Coldplay without 'em! Cheers, Pieta

The Oracle replies:

The first thing they do is get out of their sweaty stage clothes. Their adrenalin is running high when they come off stage so they don't go straight to bed. They travel back home or to their hotel and at the latter there sometimes may be a late supper. The sound onstage is totally different to what comes out of the speakers to the audience. The guys wear in-ear monitors to not only give a mix of what's going on but to provide a good level of noise reduction. As I said in the previous answer, ear protection is very important. Your dad is right, get yourself a pair of earplugs and wear them.

November 25, 2013 - submitted by Kait, Sweden

Q. Dear Oracle, Wearing earplugs at concerts, yeah or nay?

The Oracle replies:

Absolutely yes. There are all different varieties ranging from very inexpensive foam ones to pricey bespoke ones. I have a reasonable pair that just take the top end off but protect my hearing from noise damage. I take them to every gig whether a small venue or a stadium. I am very much an advocate for wearing them so do take your ear health & safety as seriously as you would other body part.

The Oracle replies:

This clip of Charlie Brown is taken from the Coldplay Live 2012. The majority of the live footage was from their Glastonbury Pyramid Stage headlining appearance, June 2011. The film director, Paul Dugdale, created a montage rather than shoot a straight performance.

Q. Dear Oracle, Just a quick question, but does the origination of the Coldplay Anchorman have anything to do with Will Ferrell's Anchorman? Just wondering if they got the name from there. Thanks a bunch!

The Oracle replies:

Well, Will Ferrell obviously chose the name for the film because he was playing the part of an Anchorman which is what you folks in the U.S call the person who reads the news. We call them newsreaders over here. If Anchorman was named Newsreader it wouldn't have the same ring to it. Q. I found out that at the beginning of the MX-tour Jonny played almost only Fender stratocasters, but later in the tour he started playing Fender telecasters in almost every song. Why did he change?

The Oracle replies:

Jort, I hand this over to the capable guitar tech hands of Matt McGinn:

"Well, this is sort of half-true. We used Stratocasters a lot early on during Mylo, but they never sounded as fat as the Tele's at gigs, which have humbucker pickups rather than the classic single-coils Strats usually come with. In the end we reverted to the Tele's - 'Sunny', his fave, in particular - for most tunes, except Violet Hill (on which he's always played a 1974 Les Paul Deluxe) and God Put A Smile Upon Your Face. If you look at the live DVD footage from Paris Stade De France you'll see Jonny is playing 'Punky' on this track, which is a white, painted Strat with a Lollar Regal Humbucker fitted at the bridge position. We did this so he can do all the nice Van Halen-y dive-bomb bits/feedback, etc. The whammy system has been doctored inside as well; it hardly ever goes out of tune, which is amazing if you look at what he's asking of it! All clever stuff done by the good people at Noden Guitars of London, as always. Unmodified Strats remained in use on the C-Stage throughout the tour however; they sounded pretty on the quieter numbers, when they were more out on their own and not competing with the big main-stage noise. These were hardtails, i.e. no whammy's. Finally, the Tele's are actual Fenders but the Strats definitely aren't! They are Nash S63's, custom built by

Nash Guitars

, near Seattle, then hand-painted by graffiti artist Paris."

Q. Is it alright if I name my daughter after u (btw she's 5 but it will have to take some time to get used to.)

The Oracle replies:

I have a feeling that Abby and/or Olivia are yanking my chain. It's unclear whether you are thinking of calling her Coldplay or Oracle (or what) to be honest. If she's 5 I'd assume she's already been named but if you do go for Coldplay or Oracle I'm sure a lifetime wouldn't be long enough to get used to it. You're obviously entitled to give your child whatever name you choose but don't be surprised if she decides to change it when she's legally allowed to. I'd be honoured and flattered of course but it doesn't suit everyone. How about Fleur? If this was a serious question, I apologize for ridicule.

Q. I was reading Roadie by JB's right-hand-man Matt McGinn again and I came across a picture where it looks like JB is helping Matt with some tuning or whatever. Anyways, the caption for it read: Hang on, who's roadie-ing for who here? Mayfair Studios, London, 2003. I remember vaguely in some Viva interviews they said the new studio(s) meant they had no time limits, could do whatever they want whenever they want, weren't being charged for each session, etc. So,I searched the Beehive tag and came up with something close to an answer posted on Nov. 23, 2009. You referred to Rockfield, Parr St., and Sarm studios to record the first 3 LPs. (Not disputing it, just so happens on Parr St. website they boast that it's the home of Coldplay's first 3 albums, curious about that info's veracity). So, this got me wondering why the boys didn't have a Bakery or a Beehive back then. Was it simply not a viable economic option then, or did the idea strike them before the Viva sessions? Thanks for the time, Oracle and Coldplayers!

The Oracle replies:

When I listed those 3 studios almost 4 years to the day back on Nov 23, 2009, I wasn't listing them in album order. For example Parachutes was recorded at Rockfield and Parr St., AROBTTH was recorded at Parr St. and X&Y was part-recorded at Parr St. before the rest was completed at Sarm. FYI High Speed on their debut, wasn't part of the Ken Nelson sessions so wasn't a Parr St. track. Obviously this isn't an exhaustive, definitive list as I haven't taken mixing into consideration. Not all bands have their own studios but it was something they aimed to have. They'd been very happy up in Liverpool but it was clear that X&Y hadn't been an easy record to make. It made sense to find the right space in London where they can be creative, productive, comfortable and without time constraints and pressures. The Bakery was that right place.

Q. Alright so I was watching a film called The Wee Man, based in Glasgow. At 1:15:25 it comes to a part at the building which is at the end of the music video for Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. I also noticed in the background I can see a clock tower near where I live so it made me curious to where exactly in Glasgow that building is, and how did the band come across that building as their idea for the music video? thanks :)

The Oracle replies:

That's the beauty of film, Cheggy. It may appear to be filmed at one place but is in fact another. The building used in the ETIAW video is in London, not Glasgow. As you may know, filmmakers often use different locations for certain scenes and even edit the background to match the rest of the film. There's a part in Withnail & I that springs to mind. Paul McGann walks out of Uncle Monty's cottage and the view from the door is spectacular. Having been to Uncle Monty's Lake District home I can testify that the view shown on film is not the view from that door.

Hi Oracle, I heard that Chris played a secret live show in LA yesterday. How come Chris doesn't do intimate acoustic sets more often for the public to purchase tickets? I would give up like 4 toes to see that show. The Oracle replies:Blimey Ethan! There's no reason to hate life or promise toe sacrifice. I don't know what makes you think "all those record label execs" were there. That wasn't the case. On 5th November, Chris played at Hotel Cafe, a small music venue in L.A. Now I have a 23 year old boyfriend and I don't know if I should tell them. Do I keep hiding them or tell my parents. I don't want this relationship to end. Help please? The Oracle replies:No good will come from keeping this secret. You don't have to mention previous boyfriends but at 18 I think it's likely your parents will expect you're dating. How about you ask your folks if you can bring a friend home. When you arrive with your boyfriend, just introduce them, have a cup of tea (or whatever), a chat and then leave. When you come back, ask what they think of him and then tell them you're dating. They'll hopefully feel like you've asked for their acceptance - not that you necessarily need it. The thing is at 18, it's not really permission you seek, but approval. I'm confused to who Roadie #42 is I have read Roadie My life On The Road With Coldplay by Matt Miller who often mentions he isn't Mr 42!The Oracle replies:That's actually inaccurate, Carly. Roadie was written by Matt McGinn, not Matt Miller. Matt McGinn often mentions he's not Roadie #42 because Matt Miller is.November 6, 2013 - submitted by Henry, AustraliaQ. Hello Oracle, Do u know what happened to the Coldplay puppets used in the life in technicolor II music video because I've heard the band still have and bring them on their travels around the world and just saw some pics on the site but I was never sure what's the story behind it all? Thanks for your time, HenzThe Oracle replies:The puppets have a new owner now. They were sold in February 2012 and the proceeds were donated to Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. They joined the band on the road but only prior to sale so the photos you will have seen are from the last tour.November 6, 2013 - submitted by Millie, United KingdomQ. Hello Oracle, I recently sent my postcard to Phil Harvey and I was wondering if I get any confirmation that he's received it? Thank you. p.s- can you reveal anything about LP6? :)The Oracle replies:Thank you for sending your postcard, Millie but I'm afraid we won't be tracking each one. It wouldn't be practical but hopefully it arrived safe & sound. I'm sure you won't be surprised that I won't be revealing any news about LP6 - Anchorman is the news guy around here.November 6, 2013 - submitted by Priscilla, NetherlandsQ. Dear Oracle, I've noticed that Chris' nose almost touches the piano keys when he is playing and not singing. Just concentration or bad lights during concerts for proper seeing? Thnx! The Oracle replies:It's the way Chris immerses himself in the music. He's not looking at the keys most of the time so it's nothing to do with lights. They can all play brilliantly and know all the songs well enough that I'm sure they'd play the right notes in the pitch black!November 6, 2013 - submitted by Merlin, MexicoQ. Me and my best friend, we both like Coldplay a lot, but he says that he hates Yellow because it reminds him to his ex-grilfriend hahaha! What should I say to him?The Oracle replies:Don't say anything - do something. Make a nice new memory to that song so that he thinks of you instead.November 5, 2013 - submitted by Luninefrendor, MexicoQ. Hello Oracle What do you know about We're a Team by Coldplay from the Hunger Games? The Oracle replies:That title isn't a new song; it's the name for the instrumental music used in the film that features Atlas hence it having another writer also credited.November 5, 2013 - submitted by Sarah, United States of AmericaQ. Hi Oracle, My roomate sprays her perfume ALL THE TIME. She puts it on about every hour and sprays WAY to much. It makes the room smell so bad all the time, I can hardly even breath. What should I do? Thanks! The Oracle replies:Is it definitely perfume? I hope it's not that appetite suppressing room spray... Maybe she does it because she thinks your shared home stinks, so if you prefer to assume she's spraying it to mask other smells, get some scented candles or joss sticks to give the place a nice fragrance. If nothing else, it may start an odour conversation. Alternatively, why don't you ask what it is and then say, "I thought so, that doesn't agree with me." Followed by, "do you mind me asking why you put perfume on so regularly?" It may be that she thinks it's worn off so this way if she says that, you can tell her it doesn't. Whatever her reason, gently suggest that given you share your living space she restricts her spraying as it's aggravating your chest/nostrils and affecting your breathing.November 5, 2013 - submitted by yzachris, twitterQ. Good morning. I found on ebay a Coldplay Yellow Fever CD? I'd never seen it before, what is it?The Oracle replies:I've never seen (or heard of) it before either. That narrows it down to a bootleg / unofficial CD. It could be a remix of Yellow but I shouldn't think it's worth spending your money on. Probably just someone trying to cash in so I don't advise you to buy such things.November 4, 2013 - submitted by Graeme , United KingdomQ. Hi, does Chris regret running in to the crowd at Sound Relief? And what did you think of it? ;-) thx.The Oracle replies:Well... Personally for me that was not the best idea Chris has ever had. Possibly the worst! In fact, I'll happily regret it on his behalf. Ok, so I wasn't there but when I saw the footage, I did think it was one of Chris' more risky moments of spontaneity. I've seen Chris react to adrenalin and the heat of the moment before but this was the heat of the moment quite literally which may have explained the not too clever decision to run. The weather was very warm during the band's set & Chris was looking rather hot by the time they got to the closer, Fix You. It wasn't a good idea for anyone to go charging around after playing a full set. Let's put it this way, if we went back in time, I would hope Chris wouldn't repeat it as he certainly didn't feel well afterwards.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I22UAqcKFFANovember 4, 2013 - submitted by Ana, SpainQ. Why is there a old woman in the The Hardest Part's video? Can anybody explain me? I'm a little curious. The Oracle replies:Technically they weren't actually there as it was footage from the 1980s. The story behind the video has been answered here before.November 4, 2013 - submitted by Natalia, MexicoQ. Hi Oracle, have you made a chorus/ participated in any Coldplay video? ThanksThe Oracle replies:Yes but nothing quite as exciting as a Phil Harvey cameo role. Regular readers will know that I was in the crowd at the Bolton show when the Fix You video was shot. I was also in the Christmas Lights video. You can't necessarily hear or see me in either but I assure I was there.

Who wants to join #TeamOracle?
