More questions answered by The Oracle... (circa. 4700! questions now answered - submit yours now!)September 19, 2013 - submitted by Raj, CanadaQ. Why is the latest song called Atlas and not Carry Your World? I wonder since it's mentioned so much in the chorus, wouldn't it make a better title overall? The Oracle replies:I don't think it's necessary to name a song after a repeated refrain or chorus. In this case, I feel Atlas is the perfect choice. It may help if you have an interest in Greek Mythology to make the connection but here's why it's actually a very appropriate moniker. Atlas was a Greek God who DID carry the world.September 19, 2013 - submitted by Justin, United KingdomQ. I've read that Atlas is strictly a stand-alone release to appear only on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack? Does this mean the song will not appear on LP6? I was just wondering because generally, I prefer to buy complete sets of things, such as TV Shows, and if Atlas turned out to appear on LP6 that would negate the purpose of buying Atlas on its own from iTunes. Yes, I'm very fussy haha! The Oracle replies:Atlas will not be on the 6th album so feel free to buy the track.September 19, 2013 - submitted by crests of waves, HarveytownQ. via twitter: ‎‏@crests_of_waves Do you think the band will ever release a Greatest Hits album? Have they considered it before? The Oracle replies:Their label have probably considered it but the band have never keen on the idea. One should never say never so let's say for now, they are more than happy to release new material.September 18, 2013 - submitted by Ashlyn, United States of AmericaQ. Hi there:) Quick and easy question: Does Coldplay ever play random shows in the U.S. that aren't on their tours? The Oracle replies:Not random in the sense that they turn up unannounced and play but they do perform at smaller clubs, radio stations, TV programmes & once a barbecue - all of which were part of promo and tickets were available to the public by either competition or (as with TV) applying for studio tickets.September 18, 2013 - submitted by Neil, United KingdomQ. What's the music Coldplay come out to just before they start other than Jay Z is it Star Wars??The Oracle replies:No, it's the theme from Back To The Future by Alan Silvestre. John Williams wrote the theme from Star Wars.September 18, 2013 - submitted by Coldlight, TurkeyQ. Hi Oracle :) Sometimes we get news from Coldplay because of the mailing lists. And sometimes there are competitions. This time is for confetti T-shirts. But I wonder, what we should write to this kind of mails. I really wonder if the words are important or not or should we give our adresses. Thank You!The Oracle replies:The words are totally unimportant. The winners are selected at random and not remotely based on content. It's simply the address for competitions rather than an opportunity to write something you think would increase your chances of winning. All you need to do is send your name & address (or else we wouldn't know where to send the prize) but that really is all that's required.September 17, 2013 - submitted by Alexandre, SwitzerlandQ. Hello, I would like to know how many copies Coldplay sold by albums? In advance thank you.The Oracle replies:The combined sales of their 5 albums are close to 60 million copies.September 17, 2013 - submitted by Linah, NetherlandsQ. Dear Oracle, Do you play any instruments? If yes, did you ever play with the band? And why did Coldplay chose you to be the Oracle, because you have a musical background or because you're a fan? Big hugs! The Oracle replies:I'm afraid to say I gave up piano (& recorder) playing when I was a child and am pretty useless at guitar & drums. I can hold a tune though. I'd say I'm musical rather than musician. I'd love to play with the band - tambourine perhaps. I am the "chosen one" for both the reasons you mentioned plus we have history. You could say Coldplay is my specialist subject.September 17, 2013 - submitted by Mary, United States of AmericaQ. Dear Oracle, I was listening to music on Pandora and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall came on. I noticed that the cover for it had 3 men with beards and what looked like halos? Who are these guys and what is it supposed to be? Thank you!The Oracle replies:I have no idea who they are or what it is supposed to be because: 1. Pandora isn't available outside of the U.S so I can't see the image. 2. That's definitely not our official cover for ETIAW.September 16, 2013 - submitted by lisa, United States of AmericaQ. Did Chris write the music that plays at the end of the pilot for Derek? The rolling movement of the solo piano seems a bit CM-ish, though I did not see his name on the credits. Thank you.The Oracle replies:No. I think you mean Gymnopedie No.1 by Erik Satie. Coincidentally, Chris played another of Erik's pieces on the Viva tour - Gnossienne 1, which is one of my favourite classical works. The other beautiful piano tunes in that episode are Nuvole Bianche & Dietro Casa by Ludovico Einaudi. Coldplay have featured in Derek as I have previously mentioned here.September 16, 2013 - submitted by Carla, United States of AmericaQ. Dear Oracle, I will start College soon (p.s which kinda scares me) and don't know how I feel about it. Any advice for all of those, including me, who will soon be starting their life on their own?The Oracle replies:The first thing to remember is - as you said "all of those" - you're not alone. The majority of students arriving on campus will be in the same boat. They won't know anyone else and will be feeling all sorts of emotions. It is a huge step but think of it as one of adventure and an exciting leap into the unknown. The other thing to bear in mind is you had a first day of junior and high school and presumably got through those. I'm sure we've all been in situations that although different, require the same kind of strength (e.g., standing up in class, performing for a team, playing live music...) Recall that strength and maybe on your first day keep an eye out for someone who looks like they're feeling the same and make friends.Good luck to you all!

Coldplaying's Secret Santa 2013, sign up now! More questions answered by The Oracle... (circa. 4700! questions now answered - submit yours now!)September 12, 2013 - submitted by Delivia, IndonesiaQ. What will you choose your family or your dream? The Oracle replies:I assume we're talking family in the sense of Mum, Dad, siblings. Obviously if you're a parent, you have to consider your children but your dream may provide them with the best life opportunities so it would be a compromise but if possible, never a sacrifice. Personally, I have to say - as selfish as this sounds - dream. I think the main thing is to live the life you choose but always with consideration for others - family, friends, everyone.September 12, 2013 - submitted by Karen , MexicoQ. Hi Oracle! Do you know if Chris read The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to write Atlas? I think this song really reflects Katniss' feelings over the book. The Oracle replies:Well, as I mentioned t'other day, this isn't a case of a previously available song being selected for the film, it's a brand new track written specifically for Catching Fire. With that in mind, I'm not sure how Chris (or anyone) could ever write a track for a book to film adaptation without reading it. What I'm saying is, knowing him as I do, I don't need to ask him to know that the answer is yes.September 12, 2013 - submitted by Carlos,Q. Hola querida Oracle. Is it ridiculousness to move to London with nothing and try to have a music career over there? I choose London because I believe my music would be more appreciated over there. Where do you think is better to start a music career, London or L.A.?The Oracle replies:I actually think the best place to start a music career is in your home town city. Performing on your local circuit is very important. I think once you have started to build a fan base you can progress. Get yourself known for where you're from has certain appeal. Think Arctic Monkeys, R.E.M, Oasis and countless others who started at the roots before they branched out - like my botanical analogy? For me, the step of a huge move to London or L.A should only be once you've established yourself and have a great sense of your identity based on the place you're from. It's a huge part of the writing experience - write about what you know. I can only speak of London as I live there but it's is very expensive and incredibly tough to break into music from nothing. Here's what I'd be asking myself: Where would I play? Why would anyone book me to play? Who would come and see me? Why? How would they hear about me? Who would play my music? Or write about it? Or buy it? How would I fund my move? My living expenses? My music? I know there are many artists/bands who get their big break from their careers starting at college/university so if that's an option it could work. To move solely for the purpose of your music is a massive risk and a huge financial commitment. I'm all for taking a leap into the great unknown but as you can start sharing your music online these days it makes sense to wait a while - it may well be that Germany or Japan appreciate your music more.September 11, 2013 - submitted by Jayymes, AustraliaQ. Hey Oracle! I was at the concert in Sydney 17 November and Chris said something about 'showing your Beyonce fingers' when Princess of China was playing? I don't know, probs heard it wrong haha. The Oracle replies:Sounds like you sort of heard right actually, though I think he said "give me your Beyonce hands" rather than fingers. Unless it was the hand flicking she did in her Single Ladies video I don't know what the move is. FYI: He didn't mention Beyonce's hands at he 2nd Sydney show the following night.September 11, 2013 - submitted by Kaylie, United States of AmericaQ. Did Chris have to learn to ride a unicycle for the Paradise video? The Oracle replies:No, he already knew how to ride one.September 11, 2013 - submitted by Walker, United States of AmericaQ. Dear Oracle, If you were sitting in a theater that had all of its lights off and you heard two people playing piano and one them happened to be Chris Martin, would you be able to decipher between the two?The Oracle replies:I'd like to think yes. If they were both playing the same thing and I knew that one of them was Chris that is! I think it's easier to decipher guitarists and sometimes drummers. Jonny certainly has a very distinctive sound and style. Outside of the band I reckon I'd easily be able to spot Prince on guitar, Flea (from Red Hot Chili Peppers) on bass & even Phil Collins on drums.September 10, 2013 - submitted by Forrest , United States of AmericaQ. When Chris plays older songs (Shiver/Scientist/See You Soon/etc.) does he try to emotionally put himself where he was when he wrote the song? And if not, how does he sing with so much passion and sincerity during every performance? Thank you Oracle! The Oracle replies:Funnily enough, the songs you mention aren't actually that personal - emotionally speaking - to Chris these days. The Scientist certainly isn't autobiographical in the first place. I'm quite sure that Fix You will always be a song that's easy to evoke the emotion rather than be in the original one. I'd wager that certain melodies and lyrics would be hard to sing any other way. There are many people who have the same raw emotion and find it difficult to sing certain songs- Amy Winehouse was visibly affected by some of her tracks from Back to Black.September 10, 2013 - submitted by Patrick, United States of AmericaQ. Dear Oracle, I have a question about two of Coldplay's album covers. For A Rush of Blood, I either see the cover with the band and title written sideways or I see it without any writing at all. For Mylo Xyloto, sometimes it is shown with MX on a plain gray background or I see the one with the colorful background with Mylo Xyloto written out. Wouldn't it be better marketing to have one, universal cover for an album, such as with Parachutes or X&Y? Thanks for your time! PatrickThe Oracle replies:As far as I know, there is only 1 official sleeve per album. Sometimes there may be a slight difference for limited editions, tour editions etc. The Mylo album did have a choice of 2 covers from the 1 booklet. You could pick which image you wanted on show by reversing it.September 10, 2013 - submitted by Lynnaya , BulgariaQ. Via twitter: Do Coldplay like all their songs? The Oracle replies:There are some songs that the band no longer like but did at the time of writing or recording. To give you an example, Chris thinks Ode to Deodorant is "shit" and half of the band don't like to perform Speed of Sound. As a whole, they're not entirely happy with X&Y in retrospect but I'm sure we all go phases of like/dislike.September 9, 2013 - submitted by Salete, BrazilQ. Dear Oracle: The new song Atlas (beautiful and perfect) is based on Greek mythology? Coldplay is using Greek mythology as inspiration for the next album? PS: I love this idea. The Oracle replies:Atlas is a standalone track written for The Hunger Games' 2nd cinematic installment soundtrack and its lyrics relate to that. Without giving too much away, the title Atlas relates to the weight of the world the main character carries - that's the only Greek mythology link. The song was inspired by the book/film and written specifically for Catching Fire. Being a one off, it's not an indication of album 6 - not that I'd discuss that yet of course...September 9, 2013 - submitted by Sophia, BrazilQ. Asked via twitter: @sofiaiwaszewicz Can they recognize a Coldplay fan by distance without them even showing it?The Oracle replies:I noticed you tweeted that you flooded Coldplay with questions and said you knew you had no hope of an answer. SURPRISE! You can't tell who is a Coldplay fan just by looking unless they are wearing a band t-shirt or customized clothes. Obviously if they are at a gig they're easier to spot. That said, there are fans that the band recognize by sight. Myself, staff and crew also spot people who we have seen before at various gigs, TV show tapings etc. Some we know by name.September 9, 2013 - submitted by Sydney, United States of AmericaQ. Darling Oracle, please help me! I have a friend that I would give the world for. He is going through a tough time in his life with school, parents, and family. I promised him that I would always be there for him no matter what would happen to him, but just recently he moved to Tennessee, and the only way I can contact him is through hand-written letters (I don't have a phone...)! My question to you is, how can I possibly be his shoulder to cry on if I live across the country with almost no means of contact with him? I love this kid, and I don't want anything to happen to him! Please help! The Oracle replies:If your friend hasn't got the Internet at home he could always use computers at his local library where you could chat online or at least send emails. If he has it at home, you could chat online face to face with your preferred video calling application. There are still public pay-phones so you could call him from one of those - get a phone card to keep an eye on your call budget. Do write him letters too as I am sure they will brighten his day and after all, this is how people used to communicate in the days before telephones and the world wide web. Maybe you include a photo every now and then. Letter writing is a dying art so it would be nice to keep it alive and has a personal touch you can't quite recreate online. Hopefully he'll make new friends too and will have their support as well as yours.September 5, 2013 - submitted by Helen, AustraliaQ. Dear Oracle, Do you think Coldplay would still be where they are now (in terms of success and "making it" as a band) if they kept the name Starfish? The Oracle replies:I'd certainly hope so! It really shouldn't matter what a band is called and plenty bands with terrible names have been successful. People do see past a name especially when the band are backing it up with amazing songs. Plenty of folk think Oasis a bad band name but who cares? Of course I feel a hypocrite because I hate(d) the name Starfish but I have no doubt that upon hearing Bigger Stronger any feelings of negativity over it would have evaporated.September 5, 2013 - submitted by Daliah, United States of AmericaQ. Does Coldplay have certain lessons or morals or a background to all of their songs? The Oracle replies:No songs are preaching in any way so rather than lessons, I'd rather go with messages. Many of the songs reflect real life & feelings that people can relate to but of course there are powerful lyrics in some tracks that are very definitely saying something worth listening to - How You See The World No. 2 springs to mind immediately.September 5, 2013 - submitted by Jonah, United States of AmericaQ. Dear Oracle, Why is the band always rushed to and plane or hotel after every concert? Any reason in particular or just because they like being out before the crowd is?The Oracle replies:Can you imagine the traffic with 60-80,000 people all leaving a stadium at the same time? There are also time restrictions of some flights where take off must be before midnight or the plane will be grounded. It just makes perfect sense to leave before the crowds. I remember once flying over the venue a good half hour after leaving (that was because the airport was very close - it's not usually that fast) and still the streets were blocked with cars and people. It takes quite a long time to empty a stadium.September 4, 2013 - submitted by Andreea via twitter, United KingdomQ. Did the band members ever make a major wrong decision w/ the potential to ruin their future& hopes? How did they cope w/ it?The Oracle replies:The first bad decision was to call themselves Starfish but they rectified that of course. I jest of course. Or do I? There was one huge bad decision that Chris made a very, very long time ago. To be fair, he was under a lot of pressure and it was a panic decision. It has been reported so I'm not speaking out of turn but Chris booted Will out of the band temporarily. Thankfully it didn't last long and he begged him to return which luckily for all of us, he did. Yay!September 4, 2013 - submitted by Travis, United States of AmericaQ. Oracle, what do you think would be the opening song of a hypothetical musical that consisted of only coldplay music? What song do you think would close the show? The Oracle replies:Ooh I like this! IF ever anyone ever did write a Coldplay musical hopefully it would be a long-standing one like We Will Rock You rather than the ironically titled Viva Forever. Personally I spent about 2 seconds thinking of my response to this question as it seemed like a no-brainer. That is to say there are only 2 contenders in my eyes (ears?). Opener - Politik, Closer - Everything's Not Lost. Maybe I should go and write it...September 3, 2013 - submitted by Greg, United States of AmericaQ. The band played Glastonbury in 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2011 to kickstart that campaigns for the albums released in those years. This beckons (yes, I use this word because of the song AROBTTH, used incorrectly?) the question of why Viva was left out. There was a festival that year, and it would've been a banger of a show. Was it simply because they weren't invited, or did they choose to not go?The Oracle replies:Although the band played Glastonbury the years you mention, it's not quite as you say. They certainly didn't play because they had albums due out but it made sense to play when they did have new music coming. Their first appearance was in 1999 (first band on the Sunday on the John Peel Stage / new bands tent). The following year they were invited to play the Second Stage and yes, it was good timing with the release of their debut album, Parachutes (July). Their first headline in 2002 was initially an invite for Saturday but they were keen to close the first night. Coldplay felt very strongly about not headlining too soon. In fact, Michael & Emily Eavis persuaded the band to take the top spot as they were rather reluctant. 2002 was an interesting year because AROBTTH was behind schedule. Its release was originally pencilled in for June but due to its delay, the Glastonbury set was songs from Parachutes and new material that hardly anyone knew. There was a mini UK warm-up tour before the festival but the performance went down brilliantly considering AROBTTH wasn't released until the end of August. Of course MX hadn't been released when they played the storming set in 2011 - voted the top Glastonbury moment by BBC Radio listeners - but they had a larger catalogue by then. There was only the 2005 appearance that the album (X&Y) was released before the festival. As you say, 2008 was the year Viva was released and there was no show at Glasto (I'm a poet & I didn't know it) but the band were also conscious they didn't want to appear every year. They LOVE Glastonbury festival but obviously had to say "no" a couple of times.September 3, 2013 - submitted by Salete , BrazilQ. Dear Oracle: The twitter @OracleColdplay is official or fake??The Oracle replies:It's official. Feel free to ask a question there and if it's chosen, I will answer it here and tweet a link. Give it a try... I won't be replying to questions on twitter though - only here on this very website. #Exciting.

Got a question? I know that each member has their own warm-up routine before shows, but what about warm-down routines? It must take a while to come down from playing in front of tens of thousands of people. Thanks so much Oracle! The Oracle replies:There isn't time for a cool down because the band rush from the stage into a car with its engine running and are whisked off to either a plane or a hotel. That's the routine therefore all they can really do is sit. It does take a while to come down after the adrenalin high of a show so depending on where they are there may be a late supper, a drink or two, an aftershow party, chit-chat, a phone call home or possibly all of the above.September 2, 2013 - submitted by Zach, United States of AmericaQ. Hey! I'm a huge fan of Coldplay (of course ;>) but I'm also a huge fan of the rock band Foo Fighters. In a recent interview, the Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl was asked about Coldplay. He answered, "It's not that we hate them, we just love to make fun of them. If it hurts their feelings, well, sorry." So does Coldplay have an opinion on Foo Fighters? It'd be so cool if they did!The Oracle replies:I can promise you that not only are Coldplay fans of Foo Fighters, they are friends. Dave Grohl is one of the nicest men in music - fact! The fun poking is all in jest and there are no hurt feelings.Recent Coldplaying tweets you might be interested in:

Coldplaying's Secret Santa 2013, sign up now! There was a Coldplay song being played in the back ground towards the end of Secret Diary of a Call Girl on Channel 4, what was it? I did not recongise it from the past songs. Please help it sounded great! The Oracle replies:Just before the band started recording A Rush of Blood to the Head, Chris was invited to sing on two Faultline tracks: Where is My Boy? and Your Love Means Everything Part 2. The latter is the track you're looking for.August 29, 2013 - submitted by Alejandra, PeruQ. Dear Oracle: is Guy or Chris singing in the timeline year 2007 video? It doesn't really sounds like Chris. The Oracle replies:There are a few videos on the 2007 Timeline so I assume you mean the one that plays as you click 2007 - 'Til Kingdom Come in Buenos Aires. Guy wrote the note that accompanies the video but it is Chris singing the lead with Will providing harmonies. Guy's mouth is too busy playing harmonica. I know what you mean though, Chris' voice does sound a little different in places.August 28, 2013 - submitted by Eleanor, United States of AmericaQ. Hello, I'm a massive fan of Coldplay as well as Mumford and Sons. Did any of the Coldplay guys go to Glasto this year? Also have they played on the same bill before with M&S. Thanks and I hope you're enjoying your summer. The Oracle replies:Yes, Chris went to Glastonbury. Both bands have been on the same bill but only at festival type shows (i.e., the Secret Policeman's Ball) not at a regular show as support or anything. Jonny went to see Mumfords play the War Child show at The Garage in London last month I'm sure he didn't mind that they were introduced as "the biggest band in the world". Happens to the best of them.August 28, 2013 - submitted by Sriram, SingaporeQ. Am I allowed to name the album that I am making Random Acts..?The Oracle replies:Ha ha ha, I see what you're doing, Sriram. Nice try. Yes, you can if you want to...August 28, 2013 - submitted by Natalie, United KingdomQ. Hi! I was wondering why Chris often mentions the song Bitter Sweet Symphony by the Verve. In one interview he said that was his favorite song. And in another video, he told a DJ to play it. It's kinda weird to me, because that song is kind of a rip-off from Viva la Vida. Thanks! The Oracle replies:Chris is a fan of The Verve and that really is a song he loves. Bitter Sweet Symphony was released the year before Coldplay formed and ten years before Viva la Vida was written though. Maybe it's the strings that make you hear a similarity. The Verve actually sampled from The Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of The Last Time by The Rolling Stones.August 27, 2013 - submitted by Oryx, CanadaQ. Hey Oracle! I was watching a documentary the other day on Coldplay. The part about how they started was pretty inspiring (well, the whole thing was). My question is what kept the band going and motivated all those years before their big break? The Oracle replies:The band's career took off very quickly. There were no "all those years" before their big break - more like a few months! They were doing what most new bands do; writing, recording and playing live. They'd got themselves a demo and had sent it out to key industry people but their break came after appearing live at In The City music convention in Manchester. Our archived timeline shows the band's relatively short history prior to their record deal.August 27, 2013 - submitted by Nathan, United KingdomQ. Hi there, I was just wondering when you will next be playing in London. I saw the 6th December, but wasn't sure if that was an old gig? Please let me know, All the best, NathanThe Oracle replies:Coldplay played Dingwalls in London on 6 December 2011 so yes it was an old gig. All you need to do to check dates is look at our live section. This is where you'd find a current touring schedule - if we had one - and also the interactive map showing where we have previously played.August 27, 2013 - submitted by Pipa, BelgiumQ. I heard that they sometimes go home between two concerts, but do they also go to the UK for one or two days when they are touring in America? The Oracle replies:The band travel home in between European concerts but it's far too far to commute to work when they're touring the U.S. That said, they do tend to set their base in New York and travel back there when it makes sense to.Recent Coldplaying tweets you might be interested in:

Where's Coldplay? http://t.co/MYHSwAw4ld (tip: download image and use zoom)
— Coldplay news (@coldplaying) August 30, 2013

Video: Postcards From Far Away piano cover (by gln2d3) http://t.co/rPCOj2YyDQ
— Coldplay news (@coldplaying) August 31, 2013

Multimedia update: Coldplay - Amsterdam live (Reykjavik, Iceland 2001) [MP3] http://t.co/o0NYUJ3oGy (rare!)
— Coldplay news (@coldplaying) August 31, 2013

Coldplay's Oracle answers questions on the London tube, Will in Game of Thrones, R#42 and more...

Q. Hi, The Oracle. I've always wondered, why did Coldplay choose Belsize Park Underground Station to record part of the Paradise video, and was the station closed to the general public when they were filming? If so, how long for? I hope you can answer this question :) Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Our second London tube question of the day. Belsize Park station (ooh - Princess of China remix has just come on Kiss radio as I type this) is the closest Underground station to The Bakery, that's why it was used. It wasn't closed to the public - none of the Underground shots involved closing the stations.

Q. Hi Oracle, I read that Coldplay travelled to their O2 gig back in December 2011 on the tube and that it was weird for them listening to what their fans were saying about them as no one recognised them. Is this too good to be true?

The Oracle replies:

As far as I know, it was only Chris who travelled by tube to the O2. I didn't hear any such thing about him listening in to what fans were saying about the band though... What usually happens is that fans can't quite believe it's Chris on the tube so they convince themselves that it can't possibly be him. It really is the fastest way to travel around London.

Q. Hey Oracle! I just got a new female dog and I would like her name to be something related to Coldplay... Do you have any ideas of a good name? :)

The Oracle replies:

I don't think it's all that important for dogs to have gender specific names as long as it's not totally ridiculous - like Sarah for a male. I think Mylo is a great name for any pet regardless of gender. In the comic book, there's a character called Fly. She's introduced by: "Her? What? Fly is a girl?" Sounds like quite a feisty character... Snoopy is a famous dog - in the Peanuts comic strip - & given he's Charlie Brown's dog, it's (indirectly) a link to the band. I'd also consider Lhuna or Lukas (Coldplay songs by Kylie Minogue & Natalie Imbruglia respectively).

Q. Hello Oracle, I saw a few articles that said Will is going to appear in season 3 of Game of Thrones. It was a couple of months ago and there are already 5 episodes out (Will wasn't there) and there are still 5 episodes left of this season so I wanted to ask is that true? Will Will really be acting there?

The Oracle replies:

As far as I know, Will is due to make a cameo appearance in Season 3 so it's not too late yet as there are still 4 episodes left. I don't watch it so wouldn't know if I'd already missed it!

Q. Hi dear Oracle, I was watching a Coldplay documentary and while Guy and Will were in the studio (I believe it's The Bakery) they have noticed a little sentence written in Arabic meaning Peace and Love. Have you ever seen it dear Oracle? I would really like to know who wrote it and if it is always written there? Thank you very much.

The Oracle replies:

I have seen it; I've got a photo of it somewhere. It's on the wall in the live room of The Bakery. I don't know who wrote it (actually, it's painted) but it was something that the band wanted - it wasn't there before they moved in.

Q. Where has Roadie 42 been? I'm really missing his blogs. Is he okay? I'm a little worried. Is he no longer blogging for the band?

The Oracle replies:

No need to be worried. R42 only blogs when the band are touring or whatever and there's stuff to blog about. They aren't, so there isn't and that's why he's not blogging right now.

Q. Greetings Oracle! I had the amazing opportunity of being able to see Coldplay live during the MX tour when they came to Detroit. I knew they were going to be good, but both my friend and I were shocked at just how good the show was put together and how much we enjoyed it. Anyway, my question is do any other members of the band generally talk to the audience during a show besides Chris? As awesome and funny as Chris is, it would be cool to hear Guy, Jonny, or Will say something during the show. Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

You know what, I don't think I've ever heard anyone but Chris speak to the audience. Obviously all the guys have a mic for backing vocals but other than perhaps talking to each other or relaying a message to crew, only Chris speaks to the crowd.

May 1, 2013 - submitted by Ben, United States of America

Q. Dear Oracle, I've recently online seen some pictures of Chris doing some killer exercises, and I was wondering what is his motivation to do them and stick to it? I am not fat, but I am not in the best shape, and I always start exercising, but I can never stay motivated and stick to it, so what is his motivation? Thank you

The Oracle replies:

I hear you, Ben - it's the same for me. I guess being the frontman of a band is motivation enough but Chris (& the rest of the band) are very health conscious and like to keep fit not just whilst touring, but while they are off campaign - as they are now. The guys are all Dads too which is incentive to keep active but back to you. What you need to realize is that we're not all the same - we have different body shape, metabolism, weight, ability, flexibility, stamina and will power. Results of exercise can take sometimes take a long time to appear. That can slow down the motivation too. Look into what you're trying to achieve and find out what exercises will work best. My top tip is pick an exercise you LIKE. There's no point doing something you hate as it will always feel like a chore. Mix it up and vary your regime to keep it interesting if that works for you. Exercise can be boring so try classes which will keep you engaged. Or you could go running and make a playlist of songs that will keep you going. I think the more you do something, the more it becomes a habit, so you'll be able to get into a routine. There's a lot you can do but keep this in mind: being healthy and fit is important but don't obsess about weight. Like you say, shape is a better angle to see it from. You can tone up and increase your fitness levels and the scales may not change. You'll feel better for it and surely that'll make it worth it? Use your end goal as your incentive to stick to it. I feel like I should go to the gym after that!

Q. Hey Oracle. Recently, Chris was pictured at the Emirates Stadium in London watching Arsenal vs Manchester United. I know Will supports Southampton FC, and Jonny supports Tottenham Hotspur FC, but do you know which teams Chris and Guy follow (if indeed they do?) If Chris was supporting his 'local' team it would be Exeter City (who play in the 4th division!). Picture of Chris at the Emirates can be found here. Thank you very much.

The Oracle replies:

Jay Z has been a fan of Arsenal for some time and has been to their matches a few times. As you can see from the photo, Chris accompanied him at the game against Manchester United last weekend. As for which team the guys support, you are correct with Will & Jonny's teams. I previously mentioned here that Chris & Guy don't have a particular team.

Q. I just bought my first car and I'm thinking of having a personalised licence plate and I want it to be something Coldplay related. I was thinking of getting DL08 BYH after Don't Let It Break Your Heart. But there could be better ones. What do you think?

The Oracle replies:

This would have made an interesting alternative Team Oracle question too. I'm thinking along the lines of using the numbers or letters from songs from songs: 42, 136, UFO, MMIX... Obviously you can also use numbers to resemble letters: F1X Y0U, 5P1E5 or TR0U13LE (think that's too long AS IS V10LET H1LL). Some people use 3 for E so maybe Y35 (Yes) & 5AF3TY (Safety). Well, that gives you something to think on I guess.

Q. Hello Oracle. I am Brazilian and I also have a band. We have enough trouble getting sponsorship to record and to raise money for our career. With Coldplay at the beginning was also well? Could you tell us the difficulties that the band went before launching parachutes? Hugs.

The Oracle replies:

The members of Coldplay were all students when they were trying to get cash together to record their first e.p. Phil Harvey borrowed the money from his Mum (who had spotted huge potential in Chris at an early age) to record the Safety ep. The band also put on a show at Dingwalls in London that they sold tickets for. The money they made from that was enough to pay Phil's Mum back. It doesn't have to be expensive to record your band. I don't know how many members are in the band but if you raise money between you however you can: extra work, a jumble sale (I don't know what you call this, but I mean a Garage / Yard sale) or maybe you could try and record it without cost. There is another way that's proving really popular these days; crowd funding. This is when people collectively chip in to fund a project and are usually rewarded in some way. Here's a good example of one that you can see how it works and if you could try something similar.

Q. Well hello there, All-knowing Oracle. I have a horrible cold right now and I am in a musical. It is nearly impossible to sing well. Then it occurred to me that Coldplay goes on tour for a loooong time and has to deliver a great show nearly every night at the tour's peak. How does Chris keep his voice in perfect condition?! Does he ever get sick? I've seen them 4 times and he was phenomenal every time. Just curious...

The Oracle replies:

Chris does sometimes get sick but he does whatever he can to prevent that from happening and looks after his voice as much as possible. Various before and after show regimes include: not speaking, ginger, lemon & honey drinks, wearing a scarf with something similar to tiger balm on it, throat remedies and certain lozenges, vocal warm-ups, steam machines and after the show he sits in a steam room. Obviously when he is sick he seeks medical attention and follows whatever is advised / prescribed.

Q. Hello wise Oracle! For months I've been wondering why Lovers in Japan isn't a part of the Coldplay Live 2012 movie. It was one of my favorite parts of the gig when those hundreds of huge balls came out. It was one of the moments I was hoping to see again on DVD but unfortunately it's not there... Could you tell me why? Thanks :)

The Oracle replies:

Lovers in Japan wasn't a permanent fixture on the MX tour so as it was only played towards the end of the tour, it was decided to leave it off the DVD.

The Oracle replies:

You can watch the video filmed forward with Chris "singing" backwards here. The soundtrack is therefore obviously reversed too - that is, the original version backwards.

The Oracle replies:

For anyone scratching their heads at this question, Peter Allen (& his writing partner Adrienne Anderson) wrote a song - I Go To Rio - that inspired Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall. Its piano riff can be heard clearly which is why the duo appear on the songwriting credits. Chris was watching the film Biutiful where the song Ritmo de la Noche features in the nightclub scene. Ritmo de la Noche also sampled the piano riff from I Go To Rio. That's the link.

The Oracle replies:

Originally the video was going to be for Spies but they changed their mind so it actually has no relation to anything lyrically or otherwise to Bigger Stronger. I can't really explain the meaning because of that reason. Also, as it was filmed just before my time with the band, I have no clue who the hand belongs to. Mat Whitecross directed this video so I asked him: "it was a guy called Balint, who did the props on the day". A nice nugget of new information!

This has nothing to do with the band AT ALL and is an illegal bootleg film. The main clue (apart from us not announcing it and it not appearing in our official discography), the band would never have such an egotistical title.

I reckon a fan took this photo at a festival or something. Thanks to Daniela for the link. I don't think there's a photo just of the two of them - not to my knowledge. I have seen footage from an awards ceremony though - I'm thinking Grammys - where Coldplay & Green Day were sat one row apart. I'm pretty sure there will be an image of this somewhere or perhaps a video. I can't find one but it will exist. This ties very nicely into one of today's previous questions... When a recording contract comes to an end an artist can either re-sign to the label for another period or go elsewhere (or set up their own). The band continue to have a contract with Parlophone. Simon Williams saw the band and offered them a single deal. Brothers & Sisters was released as a one off before the band signed their long-term record deal with Parlophone. Fierce Panda as an independent label offered great opportunities to new bands and many got their break with that first release. If you want to find out more and see a clip of Will talking about the label, visit their Pledge Music page which is raising funds for a documentary: Fierce Panda: Endangered. You can be part of the film-making process too if you fancy.

Q. Hello most wonderful Oracle. What is the band hoping for out of fans in the front few rows? I got brought down by a roadie at the Barclays and didn't realize how nuts I was getting (evidence is on the screen 1:43 into this video). I was standing right in front of Guy and don't know if it was good or annoying to him that I was so crazy since he's so chill. Best night of my life, thanks to you and Coldplay for everything you do.

The Oracle replies:

Ha! That's brilliant. You're in good company, here is someone else going nuts at a Coldplay show. You did good, Brad. The whole point of bringing you guys down to the front is for you to have the best time ever and the band love to see that. It's always great looking out and seeing people enjoying themselves. Don't ever hold back; go for it!

Q. Dear Oracle, First I hope you're doing fine and everything goes well!? I have a question concerning the Oxfam In My Place film project... sadly I found out today that it was possible for fans to participate by sending a pic or video for the film. Is it totally useless to send one through? I would really love to send one... but I know I missed the deadline *damn*. And second I wanted to ask if this will be a real music video for the Oxfam version of In My Place with the band in it etc. or is it a PR-video for the Oxfam campaign? Thank you a lot for your reply :) Have a good day, greets from Austria

The Oracle replies:

The deadline was the final date to submit your videos. The answer to your second question can be seen here as Mat Whitecross has worked hard to turnaround those submissions into a great video.

Q. What made you all want to start a band, and was it hard at first getting along and did you think you guys would become so famous? Thanks :)

The Oracle replies:

All the guys played instruments before they met at UCL. Chris claims he only went to University in London to meet Jonny, Guy & Will, that is that he knew it would be a great place to get a band together - and it was! By the way, anyone who joins a band to become famous is doing it for the wrong reasons. Of course musicians want to be able to make a career out of being in a band but fame - that's a by-product of success. In my eyes, success is a far greater achievement.

Q. I have not heard one thing about Coldplay in so long. I was listening to my two favorite songs off of MX last night, Hurts Like Heaven, and Don't let it Break Your Heart, and thinking these songs are so special to me and make me feel like crying but in a good way. I hope the band will make more music in the near future. Thanks.

SPECIAL RECORD STORE DAY PICTURE DISC RELEASE: We have been updating the news section of the website & tweeting. In fact, today's news (& imminent Coldplay Messenger newsletter) contain info about one of your aforementioned favourite tracks. It's Record Store Day in the UK on Saturday (20th April). There is a special picture disc limited edition release of Hurts Like Heaven and Us Against The World (Live). It will also contain Issue One of the Mylo Xyloto Comic. Q. Hi Oracle! I would like to know.. There's a colour song in each album: Yellow in Parachutes; Green Eyes in AROBTTH; White Shadows in X&Y; Violet Hill in VLVODAAHF; Charlie Brown in Mylo Xyloto. Did they do this on purpose or it's just a coincidence? Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Total coincidence. Violet Hill is a place and Charlie Brown is a name so I don't associate either of those songs with their title's colour.

Q. Hey Oracle, Today, for the probably the 50th time, I watched Live 2012, which is my favorite movie of all time. In the credits at the end of the movie, under "Montreal Film Crew" "Camera Operators" one of the names listed was "Will Champion" - Is that a coincidence or was Will apart of the filming?! Please let me know! Your #1 Coldplayer, Elizabeth :)

The Oracle replies:

Yes he was! When the guys perform the Stage C segment of the show, Will is recording on a hand-held camera before he joins the rest of the band - that's why he has a filming credit.

Q. Hello Oracle, You recently answered a question about whether or not Chris or any of the band are vegetarians. I am curious about the segment of 5:29 to 5:45 in this video. You said that the vegetarian claim is a "common misconception," and I of course believe that you know that for a fact, I'm just curious why Chris wouldn't have set the record straight in this situation? Has he/they only just recently become carnivores? Thanks Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

"We're not so much a big meat band" isn't saying they don't eat meat. You have to remember that the band have no religious or moral reasons for abstaining. What they eat is to keep fit & healthy so they may one or all go through periods of time where they do or don't eat meat. I don't think Chris saw it as a serious question (Cold cut/Coldplay... neither do I) and that's probably why he didn't feel the need to elaborate further.

Coldplay's Oracle on Chris's tinnitus, Up With The Birds, Mylo Xyloto movie and more...

So are Coldplay planning on doing any concerts at UCL? Would they be willing to do one at all? Looking forward to hearing your reply!

Q. what happens with the footage of the concert. I can't find official footage of the concert in the Netherlands. I mean the footage on the big screens:)

The Oracle replies:

The footage on the big screens is shot purely for that purpose - to be seen by the audience at the time. It's not recorded for any other purpose and therefore not officially available. I'm sure there will be plenty of fan recorded videos on YouTube for example.

Q. I've heard that Guy makes all the clothes for each of the different eras? Is this down to his expert modelling skills?

The Oracle replies:

Oooh I don't know where you heard that but it's not true. Guy doesn't "make" their stage clothes.

The band are all involved in the look of the attire they wear to represent the album/tour. They choose styles, colours, designs - including doodling their own ideas for badges, appliques and any other additional bespoke items. They have designers and wardrobe experts who will collate the ideas, source the material / garments and customize them with the band's individual requests. They do sometimes have custom made garb too. Stella McCartney collaborated with the band for Viva's costumes.

Q. Hey Oracle, I was watching a video of Clocks in YouTube and I found this video. At the beginning of the song it is very similar to Clocks I couldn't believe it. Coldplay give permission to that? Please answer me.

The Oracle replies:

No, because as you say it's similar but it isn't the same. That's a very different definition. Music can be inspired or influenced by other music and sometimes it can deliberately or co-incidentally resemble another piece. Unless it is using a direct part, there is no need to seek permission. In this instance the piano riff has similarities to Clocks but it's not a direct copy.

Q. Hello Oracle, I read about Coldplay's show at the Barclays Center on New Years with Jay-Z. I saw that it was hinted that this show would become an annual thing, is there any truth to that? What are the chances of seeing Coldplay at the Barclays Center to ring in the 2014 new year?

The Oracle replies:

I think that appertains to the fact that Coldplay have played a New Year's Eve show the past 3 years and two of those were with Jay Z. The first was 2010 in Las Vegas and the year after the band played Abu Dhabi.

Q. I heard that Mylo Xyloto was planned to be a movie kind of like The Wall was. Then I remembered this when Phil Harvey tweeted about Xylobrytes being some sort of evil minions or something. Can you verify whether this is true or not? If it is true why did they never make a movie? That would've been great to watch.

The Oracle replies:

Phil actually called them "critters" in his tweet but they're alien type beings. I've only got Issue 1 (of 6) as yet, so haven't encountered them myself. I can confirm that a film was very much in discussion and it was such a mammoth undertaking. A reverse decision was made taking many factors into account - one being the impending album which of course took precedence. The film was intended to have been animated - that's a similarity to The Wall though that wasn't 100% animation.

Q. Hi Oracle! A few days ago I heard a rumour that said that Chris Martin suffers tinnitus, a disease that causes the person that has it hear noises, like hum or hisses. Is is true or is it just a rumour? I'm eagerly waiting for you to answer this question. Thank you for your time. Bye!

The Oracle replies:

It's not a rumour, Chris does suffer with tinnitus. It's not a disease though, it's usually as a result of being subjected to loud music. There are varying degrees - I get it frequently but I don't suffer and it passes quickly. Some cases are so severe that the sensation is constant. Q. Dearest Oracle, I was watching videos in French to practice a little bit and all of a sudden I found this song. The piano sounds just like the acoustic version of Lost by Coldplay. Is it simply sheer coincidence, have they asked Coldplay for permission, or what happened...?

The Oracle replies:

It IS Lost? - the acoustic version of Lost! You need to clear a sample before using it. That means La Fouine will have needed permission to sample Lost? in this song, Papa. Not necessarily from the band but their label/publisher. La Fouine will also have had paid a royalty to Coldplay for its use.

Q. Hey guys, I am totally wondering about the Blue Room e.p. and Brothers and Sisters e.p. Are these the first Coldplay recordings or just demos? Thank you in advance! (PS you guys are awesome!)

The Oracle replies:

Brothers & Sisters was a band demo that was released as a single by Fierce Panda. There was a subsequent version of Brothers & Sisters recorded for the b side of Trouble. Coldplay's first release for EMI was The Blue Room. It contained a couple of tracks from their professionally studio recorded Safety ep demo. So to answer your question, both eps are made up of both. Coldplay's demos were all of high quality though so it's hard to see them as demonstration when they were so good.

Q. Dear Oracle, I wonder have you ever meet any friend or closest friend being a fan? Or have you ever seen someone special through the public on the stage when you look all the people, does someone stand out?

The Oracle replies:

Yes and yes. One of my very best friends is someone I met through being a fan; not of Coldplay, this was before they existed. I once spotted someone in a crowd of 30,000. I was also in the crowd - not on stage - but a very long way away from them. It felt like love at first sight. After the show I was at a party and so were they. Q. Hello Oracle, Why is Coldplay not performing at Glastonbury this year? They are always there! Also where do I send my fan mail to Coldplay? I am going to England this fall. What areas of the UK do you love to go to? I have to do to a Manchester United football game! LOVE THEM!!! Cheers, Tim( who is pretending he is from England).

The Oracle replies:

They are far from always there. Their first appearance was as a new band in the John Peel Tent*, 1999. The year after they performed on the Other Stage. They first headlined on the Pyramid Stage in 2002 and again in 2005. They didn't play the festival again until 2011 where they headlined on the Saturday night. We don't have a fan mail address but there's a contact button on this site - the band don't read/reply to those personally though. Without knowing how long you're in England it's hard to suggest places. If you're going to Old Trafford I would say go a little further north to The Lake District. There are plenty of beautiful places of interest in the UK so you won't be short of things to see. *It was called The New Bands Tent at the time, later renamed to John Peel Tent in honour of the radio DJ who championed new music. Incidentally, the bands playing the tent weren't always "new" bands playing for the first time.

Q. Hey I'm big fan of Coldplay in twitter A/Q that was done few months ago. Chris mentioned that falconry - not sure if it is the right word, was one of his hobbies. It also my husband favorite hobby. I really loved to see picture of Chris with his falcon or practicing his hobby? And what they really hunt in England? Do they hunt buzzard too? I'll be grateful of you post picture. And sending Coldplay love from Saudi Arabia. Peace.

The Oracle replies:

Last May there was a twitter Q&A. Chris replied to one about what he likes to do when he has time off with "I like falconry, jousting and looking for suits of armour on eBay. And making up daft answers to questions." The last part of this gives away that Chris was just having a bit of fun. He doesn't count falconry as a hobby (or jousting & looking for suits of armour on eBay).

Q. I heard that Chris had said that the name of the next album would be easier to pronounce. So the name of the next album has already exist. When will the band be ready to declare it?

The Oracle replies:

All he was saying there was that Mylo Xyloto was problematic for most to say. It was tricky to know where to put the emphasis on Xyloto and whether to pronounce it with 2 or 3 syllables for example. The band will not declare the final title (or any working titles) until the album is ready.

March 25, 2013 - submitted by Ryan, United Kingdom

Q. Hi Oracle, Grammatical question. On the album X&Y, track 13 is listed as 'Till Kingdom Come. The apostrophe indicates that the word has been abbreviated from 'Untill' which isn't a word. "Till" (no apostrophe) and " 'Til " appear to be the only correct ways of spelling this preposition. One of my friends has tattooed this on her person and was a bit disappointed when I pointed out (what I believe) to be an error. I'm not sure that it's intended to be a clever rock-star misspelling of the word, possibly just a graphic artist getting a little excited. Could you please advise? Ryan.

The Oracle replies:

The track IS called 'Til Kingdom Come and therefore there is no grammatical error on the album sleeve's track listings. Unfortunately that means your friend has an incorrect tattoo. Speaking of rock star misspelling, I recall telling the singer of Dust Junky's that his band name really ought to be Dust Junkies but he replied that it looked better his way. I suppose (band) names are ok to change but as you say 'til is the correct abbreviation. Anchorman informs me that George Orwell and Julia Donaldson abbreviate until to till. As far as I am concerned that is the word for a cash register (amongst other things).

Q. I have heard from a lot of people that the boys are taking a break for a couple of years. If so, how long is the break going to be and when do you think there is going to be another album or tour?

The Oracle replies:

Although I understand people are anxious for news and perhaps even mild panic sets in at the thought of no new music for a while yet I wonder why this question comes up so much when we look at the discography of the band: Parachutes 2000; AROBTTH 2002; X&Y 2005; Viva 2008; MX 2011. You can see from this that the band have always had 2-3 years between albums so however long this "break" is, I can't see it being any longer. It's not a break per se as much as being off the radar.

Q. I assume the answer is obvious to everybody (or not because..well, I'm asking it !) as no one ever asked this : Do you like Coldplay ? And if so when/how did you start liking them ? Is it before you got your job on this website ? :) Much love from France ! xx

The Oracle replies:

I think it would almost be an impossible to task to work for a band I did not like. Like is putting it mildly - I LOVE Coldplay. I've loved them from the first time I heard them and yes, that was a long time before I worked for them.

Q. I'm a grandmother (meaning old lady) who absolutely loves Coldplay. I have all their albums downloaded to my Zune (yes, I bought a Zune and I love it) and have a Coldplay playlist which is always on and playing, although there are 78 gigs worth of music on my 120 gig player. I even sleep with Coldplay on. Is there somewhere I can find who wrote the lyrics and the music to the songs? I especially love Things That I Don't Understand. Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

All the albums have credits on the sleeve; Coldplay (mainly Chris) write all their own lyrics and music but there are a few songs that credit other writers such as Jon Hopkins. There has also been occasion where the band have used a riff, hook or similar and credit has also gone to the source. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive list but some examples of artists among those credited are Kraftwerk (Talk), Ritmo De La Noche (Every Teardrop), Sigur Ros (Princess of China). By the way, just because you're a grandmother does not make you an old lady! You sound young at heart to me.

Q. Hey Oracle:) I heard a rumor that Coldplay will be playing at Glastonbury this year, is it true?

The Oracle replies:

The thing with Glastonbury is there are always going to be rumours of who will be playing every year. I don't know who starts them but as we played the last one (2011)... The line-up is only announced when it's sold out - which it is - but apart from Emily Eavis confirming that Daft Punk are not performing there's been no other official word yet. Before that starts a frenzy of folk thinking Coldplay are going to appear, that's how rumours could start! As you know, the band are not touring and the MX tour is over. They're not planning on playing at any festivals.

Q. Hello Oracle, I was wondering how Jonny gets that great sound on his guitar? It sound incredible! And where can I get a book or tabs for how Jonny plays songs and riffs exactly the way he plays them? Thanks see ya!

The Oracle replies:

Many great guitarists have a distinctive sound: Clapton, Prince, Hendrix & our very own Buckland. There are many components to creating that sound. The guitarist first and foremost and then their choice of guitar, the effects pedals, techniques and even the amp. Guitarists can choose to play with or without distortion, capo, whammy bar, pick (plectrum) and slides. All of these are contributing factors. We don't have guitar tabs books - though there are some available online, as well as tabs sites but I'd hate to recommend any that aren't accurate. There are also YouTube videos of how to play Coldplay songs - unofficial - but probably worth a look.

Q. The girl I was about to date moved to another country and now a bunch of girls want me to ask them out. and it's driving me insane they are like forcing me and I can't think clearly anymore how do you know you found the one?

The Oracle replies:

Ooh get you Mr. Popular! Look, you can't be forced to ask anyone out so forget all about that. As for finding "the one", if you're a regular reader you'll know I don't believe there is necessarily a "one" for life but that's my opinion. I do believe in falling in love (however long it lasts) and for that all I will say is you will just know. So stop worrying and listen to your gut and heart rather than any other pressures you're feeling from the girls who by the sounds of it are throwing themselves at your feet.

Q. A week or so earlier, you stated that the pictures/videos for the out of place video was due on march 20. the web site says April 2nd. Which is right, because if it's the latter, my pictures will be much better (in a sense...) and better for the clip. thanks, Justin

Q. What animal makes you laugh the most? Mine's a sloth.

The Oracle replies:

I love watching cats do funny things but penguins make me laugh the most without a doubt. Of course I hope they don't hurt themselves but there's something inherently funny about a penguin falling over. There are lots of brilliant web cams in penguin enclosures so if you have to time to watch, I'd highly recommend watching live. I've done it and it's worth the wait for when they slide into the camera.

Q. Hello Oracle, Just thought I'd let you know about the last episode of Derek, Ricky Gervais's comedy set in an old people's home. Watched it yesterday. It was both incredibly sad, and hilarious. But the killer was the extended mix of Fix You. It makes me cry anyway, but with the video...........WAAAAAHHHHHHH!! Can thoroughly recommend it. It's on 4OD. Cheers

Q. Hi Oracle! Can you promise me one thing? That you will say to Chris not to cut his hair. His curls are lovely. Thanks :)

The Oracle replies:

A few years ago in The Bakery whilst discussing the next album (which was at that point almost 2 years in the future away), Chris said he had a very important question to ask me. I felt honoured that he was about to bestow such faith in my reply. "Do you think my hair should be short or long for the next campaign?" Anchorman was also present and said "short" - I reminded him that Chris was asking me, not him. "I think long. I prefer it long. Either way if you grow it now you can always cut it if you change your mind". As you may have noticed, Chris' hair was pretty long just before the official MX photos were taken. It seems he did indeed change his mind so I can't promise you what you ask. See? Things like haircuts are a very important factor and decisions like that aren't taken as lightly as you may think.

Q. Hi dear Oracle: Ive been asking myself ALL DAY LONG, have One Direction copied the Xylobands of the Coldplay concerts? I have seen a photo that is a glow band that says One Direction . (I DO NOT like One Direction). Please answer me , thanks. Greeting From Mexico.

The Oracle replies:

I was a little taken aback by some of the venom towards One Direction for having flashing wristbands at their concerts. Poor lads are just trying to make a great show. I know the Xylobands made a huge impact on the touring scene but there are many effects that many artists use at their live shows; confetti, pyrotechnics and giant balloons - they were not a new invention. Glow bands, LED bracelets and flashing wristbands have been around for many years before Xylobands. However, what makes a Xyloband - Jason's invention - unique is the fact you can control which wristbands flash and when. One Direction weren't the first band to recently (post MX) use flashing wristbands by the way but I am quite sure that Coldplay paved the way to make for an exciting show using them.

Q. Hey Oracle! I've always wondered, how does Guy divide his time between Apparatjik and Coldplay? He works more on Coldplay, doesn't he? And do Jonny, Will and Chris feel bad about him being also in another band? Thanks for answering.

The Oracle replies:

The thing with Apparatjik is that all the members have also been busy with primary jobs; Mags was still in A-ha until quite recently, Jonas from Mew has band commitments and Martin continues with his "day job".

They make it work around their priorities. Guy's priority is Coldplay but when the band aren't in the studio or touring, he's free to work elsewhere as he has done - not just with Apparatjik. It's not just Guy though. Chris, Jonny & Will have all collaborated, performed, guested (or whatever) with other artists.

Q. Hey Oracle, Just wondering if you knew of any groupies that followed the MX tour around for a while.

Thank you:)

The Oracle replies:

Ha! You know what groupies are, right? We don't have ANY groupies! We do have some amazing fans who travel the world and see as many shows as they can. Some of them we recognize the faces of and some we know by name. One such fan is sadly no longer with us but we all knew her from crew to band. Her name was Jennifer John and she was a lovely sunbeam of a person. There is a photo of her outside the O2 Arena in London. I always think fondly of her when I pass it.

Q. Hi Dear Oracle ! How are you? And how is the band? I noticed that the band took photos for their last album MX: here and here. I saw that all the graffiti were painted on walls. So that's my question : Where are these walls? Do they exist? I hope I'll have a reply, take care Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

Yes, the walls exist but the graffiti does not. The walls are in London but once the video / photo shoot was over, the walls were painted over so they are no longer a physical piece of art - only the video and photos remain.

Q. Dear Oracle, Today I heard an interesting question on the radio....and I want to ask you: If you didn't know your age, how old would you think you are? love, Carol.

The Oracle replies:

That is a very interesting question. How would one guage that? Tricky. I once met an old man in Peru who had no idea how old he was. He didn't know how many children he had either. What I have worked out over the years is that I don't know how I am supposed to feel at any particular age and am very aware that I don't feel old in my mind. I think I'd be useless at working it out even though the ageing process has shown very physical signs. I may have intellectually progressed and matured in decision making but I suppose I still feel like I'm in my twenties when in fact I am in my... well, let's just say that my twenties are a long way behind me now. I am rubbish at guessing ages and I never get it right probably because I just don't notice. I concern myself not with the age but the person they are. I have many friends who are less than half my age and it doesn't feel strange at all. If I didn't know and had to guess my own age I would probably rely on other people to help me. Thankfully most people put me younger so I'd go with whatever they say.

Q. Hey Oracle! I found a movie on IMDB called Slashed that will be released this year, 2013. The cast list states Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland will be playing Agent Sherbet Bones and Agent Datsun Ford. Is this true? Are the boys really the cast of this movie? It would honestly be spectacular!

The Oracle replies:

No, this is old news and an old film - over 10 years old in fact. You can see a clip that features Chris & Jonny here* plus I have previously answered this question but there is nothing new to add since I last mentioned it. Q. Hi Oracle, In the acoustic version of In My Place being released for Oxfam's video, I could swear that I hear Chris singing "How long must you wait for *him*", and not "How long must you wait for *it*". Is it true that perhaps on an older version of the song, it was "him" and not "it"? RK from Canada

The Oracle replies:

The lyrics have never been "him" in any early versions - always "it" but yeah, for whatever reason it either sounds like Chris is singing "him" or he very well may be!

Q. Why didn't the band have Xylobands at the Paralympics Closing Ceremony?

The Oracle replies:

The Olympic Stadium was fitted with individual LED lighting panels at every seat. It wouldn't have worked if both the panels and Xylobands were used in full force so it was decided not to use Xylobands, though the athletes were wearing them.

Q. Dear Oracle, I've just recently got back from volunteering for Oxfam at Reading Festival. I had a great time, but it made me wonder why Coldplay haven't played there since 1999? I know the guys have a closer connection with Glastonbury, but the way they're performing live at the moment I think they could impress any crowd.

The Oracle replies:

Their first Reading appearance was brilliant and the tent was packed. The day after the same could not be said of their Leeds performance. The gates were late opening and as the band were first on, they were instructed to start playing on time which meant there was only myself & Phil watching until the gates opened. It was an anti-climax and certainly didn't put anyone in the happiest of moods. It was really sad to have gone from the high of Reading to the low of Leeds. Travelling through the night to get there only to play a couple of songs to an empty tent. Once people started to arrive it was great but it really put them off appearing at the festival again. The next time they were asked they had a prior engagement anyway (a cricket match!) that clashed so they couldn't perform.

Q. Hey Oracle, While waiting in the queue outside the Emirates for the show on June 4th a person in an elephant suit was going round with a cardboard sign, rather like the elephant in the Paradise video. I would like to know whether it was Chris, it seems like something he would do after all, please post my question!!!

I assure you once Chris was at that venue, there was far too much going on before the show to put on an elephant suit and walk around outside the venue. It definitely wasn't him.

Q. Hello. I went to see the movie Warm Bodies in the theater yesterday. In it they played a song with lyrics that were similar to the Viva era demo The Fall of Man...'I went out for a ride and I never came back'. Did Chris use those exact lyrics when he wrote The Fall of Man? Also, do you know the name of the song that was played in the movie?

The Oracle replies:

Well, you (may) know I don't like to discuss demos that weren't ever intended to be heard but yeah, it is the same lyric. The song in the film however, is Hungry Heart by Bruce Springsteen.

Q. How many times Chris goes to Gymnastics in a week?

The Oracle replies:

I think you mean how many times does he go to the gym - he doesn't do gymnastics. He's a member of a gym as well as the band having their own gym in the studio. Chris works out almost every day whether it's at the gym or jogging. The band have a trainer to keep them in shape and before a tour or a big show (such as headlining Glastonbury), they push themselves pretty hard.

Q. My nephew, Dalton, has been playing your music on the pianos since he was 8. He is a very talented musician cursed with an unfortunate home life. He is now 16 years old and wants to drop out of high school because he says "To have a backup plan is to expect failure." He wants to be a professional musician, which is great, but thinks he doesn't need school anymore. He refuses to listen to anyone giving him advice from our family because he doesn't respect his parents anymore or anyone else for that matter. I know he would be amazed if the Oracle (whoever it is run by) were to answer a question directly related to him even if this is the real band members replying. Any advice would be appreciated!

The Oracle replies:

I can't really tell him what to do. I can tell him that Chris, Will & Jonny decided to finish their studies despite being in a position where they didn't "have" to. I disagree with a back up plan being seen as failure because we are all susceptible to being affected by circumstances beyond our control. Making it as musician is harder than just being great too. I know many bands who deserved success but it didn't happen for one reason or another. They had to fins a plan b fairly quickly. Having something to fall back on is never a bad thing. An education can be picked up at a later date of course but I would advise anybody to get some qualifications when possible. No reason to give up music but many reasons not to give up school.

Q. Oracle! When did Coldplay get pet a cheetah? Have you seen the photos? Crazy stuff!

The Oracle replies:

Well, you know they played in South Africa in 2011? That's where the photos of the band with a cheetah were taken. Around the same time the Paradise video was filmed (Oct 2011). If you haven't seen them, type "Coldplay cheetah" into your preferred search engine and you'll see the photos we're talking about. Tumblr is full of them.

Q. Is there any chance "Coldplay" might ever have bumper stickers available for sale? I would love to have one, and I am sure many others would too!! Thanks for reading!

No, I doubt it. The only one I have ever seen is in this video.

Q. Dear oracle, Is it hard to get back to your normal life after a tour has ended? Also, do you not see people involved in tours for a long time, or do you guys have a "reunion" before the next tour?

The Oracle replies:

It does take some adjustment to settle back into the normal routine when they've been away for weeks at a time. When they're in Europe they go home most nights though. The band tend to stay away from the studio for a while but it's not all that long so they see each other quite soon after. There isn't a reunion, no - they just go back to work like the rest of us.

Q. Hi O, I have only just got my hands on a copy of the LeftRight EP and I love love love it! esp Clocks but this has been driving me nuts- starting at about 2.58 Chris is singing/saying something that sounds like 'the dust is heckling' over and over- Please...What is he saying? Thank you. PS Did I mention that I love it..?xxx

The Oracle replies:

EDIT: I should've waited until I got back home to listen to my LRLRL before tackling this. My guess at it being in Spanish was correct but thanks to everyone who wrote to say Chris is counting 1,2,3,4 (in Spanish).

Q. Hi, Was Shiver the first song ever performed at Glastonbury 2000? I'm looking for a setlist from that concert. Cheers.

The Oracle replies:

No. Spies was the first song performed that day. The setlist was: Spies, Don't Panic, High Speed, Shiver, Trouble, Yellow, Everything's Not Lost and You Only Live Twice (with a Goldfinger outro finish).

Q. Oracle, I was wondering if there is any footage or audio of the band playing Such A Rush live. It is one of my favorite songs from their earlier works. Thank you, James

The Oracle replies:

It's one of mine too, James. The only footage of Such A Rush live that I know about is on my dictaphone from a soundcheck in Antwerp, 2005. Sadly though they ran through the song a few times, it was decided to leave it out of the set. I know they soundchecked Bigger Stronger at Dingwalls in December 2011 - I wish I'd been there for that - lucky Anchorman was.

Q. I don't get what's the band doing now. And why is their MX tour so short. Can you explain why?

The Oracle replies:

I am getting asked a lot if the band are taking time off. They rarely take time off. It may seem that way because they're off the radar & not out and about performing but they are busy behind the scenes. They're not in the full steam ahead mode just yet, but plans are being made and steps are being taken. It's impossible to be on the road permanently (unless you're a DJ) but the MX tour was far from short. They started performing live during the festival period of 2011 while still putting the final touches to the album. They went out on the road again around the release (October) and didn't finish until December 2012 so that's 18 months of performing live with the MX tour running for over a year of that.

Q. Hi Oracle. In the beginning of this video Chris mentions Margaret, his girlfriend at that time. I was wondering was she the girl in The Scientist video? P.S. Why wasn't Chris wearing any shoes at that gig?

The Oracle replies:

That's how rumours start, Hannah. Margaret (Fiedler) was not his girlfriend; she was a member of the band Laika, watching from side of stage. And double no, Elaine Cassidy is playing the part in The Scientist video. I imagine Chris wasn't wearing shoes for the same reason Will was wearing shorts; it was blooming hot!

Q. Hello, Do you know what the model is for Chris Martin's Martin guitar? Thanks

The Oracle replies:

No, but luckily I know a man who does. Thanks to the knowledgeable Hoppy (Chris' guitar tech for those who don't know) for this very comprehensive answer. "On the MX tour he was playing Martin D-15 M's (FYI: D= dreadnought body shape/ number = style, the higher the number the more fancy appointments, binding, inlays etc/ M= mahogany). He used six or seven in a show, set up for different songs/tunings and all painted different)." He also went on to tell me: "His favorite is a 1985 (I think) made D-28 which doesn't tour. I believe he originally rented this from John Henry's Hire dept. a long time ago and subsequently bought it from them. Amongst the others, he has a vintage pre-war D-28. Also D-42, or 45 K (K=Koa wood) from the 70's (I think!) Also he may have a OO-15CE (OO= body size, small/ C= cutaway/ E=electric) somewhere. He used these on the Rush of Blood tour. He has recently been recording with 2 new HD-28's (H= herringbone, which is a style of binding they previously used on pre-war made D-28's) that have been modified, and a couple of specially made 12 string versions of D-15 M's." He knows his stuff does our Hoppy! Wow, I hope you guitar fans out there found that as fascinating as I did.

Q. Ok, so music related question, I was listen to The Libertines, precisely Last Post On The Bugle and I noticed that there's a verse that goes: "Inside I felt, So, so alone, Locked in a room, Waiting til kingdom come, Although I felt elated, I felt like I was scum." So I thought that maybe Coldplay were inspired by this to make their song Til Kingdom Comes. So did they took inspiration from The Libertines?

The Oracle replies:

No, "until kingdom come" is a well known phrase from a prayer and basically it means until the end of the world / forever.

Q. Hi Wise Oracle! A few days ago I was watching the music video: "The Nappies". It's very funny. But I have a problem: I could recognize almost everyone in that video except from the one with the red wig. It seems to be a woman, but I am not totally sure. Please Oracle, Can you tell me who is this? Thanks in advanced.

The Oracle replies:

I actually knew I had answered this already but I nearly fell off my chair when I discovered (using the search option on this site to search "nappies") that it was way back on August 13, 2009! Blimey, where does time go?

Q. Greetings from Michigan! I was wondering... do the boys ever find embarrassing photos (and such) of themselves on the internet and don't like it? Just like dorky photos where they're making weird faces (not anything more!)

The Oracle replies:

I think we all have photos of ourselves we cringe at. I think you just have to laugh at old photos no matter how embarrassing they may feel now. There is a great example of a "funny" retrospective on this site. In one of the timeline videos from 1999 - Click the March TV icon - there is a picture and footage of Chris' hair. The photo has the caption "Hmm, nice hair" and while the band are looking back at it, they have a laugh over the comment. It shows a gig with the same big hair from that time that is rather similar to one of the Hair Bear Bunch!

Q. Warner Music Group bought Parlophone. Does this affect the group in any direct (artistc, if you like) way, except from the fact that Warner will now sign the contracts rather than EMI? Thanks in advance!

The Oracle replies:

EMI had actually already been sold; Parlophone's sale was a condition of that deal. The band won't be directly affected by the acquisition. The continuation of the Parlophone legacy and brand are central to the future success of this combination, and we are proud to have them join us."

The Oracle replies:

It's always sad when art is defaced and yes, that is the painting - Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People. Last year there was a woman who decided to touch up a fresco - Ecce Homo - with rather alarming results. Q. Hi Oracle! While in church one Sunday, we sang a hymn titled My Song is Love Unknown. Some of the lyrics like "my song is love unknown" and "love to the loveless shown" sounded awfully familiar. I am very curious, were these lyrics used in the song A Message on purpose of is it merely a coincidence?

The Oracle replies:

The words from the hymn were used deliberately - it totally inspired A Message.

My question, where and when is this from? I know the first verse and chorus is how they played it on the more recent MX tour shows, but I never knew there was this full studio version! It's amazing, thank you. :-)) Craig

The Oracle replies:

There are a few acoustic versions of Yellow and not just live. The first studio version was given away via a newspaper back in 2000. It was from a radio session. This version you love is from the Every Mother Counts compilation. A beautiful version for a great cause.

Q. Dear Oracle, For the first time we have the occasion to reveal a good news before the journalists. Is real that Chris will participate, as special guest, to 63 edition of Festival di Sanremo 2013 in Italy next week? Please give to Italian fans the good news.

The Oracle replies:

Not that I know of; I think that is just a rumour.

Q. Dear Oracle, This week, my Mum bought me the Coldplay Live 2012, and when she saw the 2003 DVD, she bought it too... But now I've got a big, big problem : which one should I watch first ? (I can't watch both at the same time :/ ) Greetings from France, Marie

The Oracle replies:

Watch the 2003 show first; makes sense to watch them chronologically.

Q. Oh, Mighty Oracle :) I was wondering if Chris has been noticed when recording videos like Fix You when he was in the back alleys and The Scientist when he was walking down the high street. I'm sure there must be people who are Coldplay fans and would want to meet him if they saw him in the street. Thanks. PS Hey from UK.

The Oracle replies:

I'm intrigued by your "hey from the UK" - I'm in the UK too... Anyway, to business. Video shoots are normally a closed set so there's not generally people there who aren't meant to be if you know what I mean. People in videos are usually extras rather than random folk in the background too. There are some occasions where that's not possible like the London Underground scenes in Paradise. Also Fix You as you mentioned, but that was shot at night and nobody was around. The public are very respectful when filming is taking place and tend not to approach. Maybe they just feel it wouldn't be appropriate timing but who knows? I do know that many people were so surprised to see Chris in an elephant suit that they didn't quite believe it was him!

Q. Dear Oracle, I just heard a new song by Maroon 5 called Daylight, sound familiar, the title? How is this possible? I figured some songs have the same name, but don't musicians check and stuff? Was curious about this for other songs too. Thanks. Justin.

The Oracle replies:

You can't copyright a song title and it's not something anyone would have to check so assume they don't.

Daylight is after all something common unlike Cannonball for example which has been the title for 3 songs that I know of. As you say some songs have the same name, so why not this one?

Q. Greetings Oracle, Has Coldplay ever played any of their songs that they recorded as demos? If not will they? I would love to hear some songs from the Viva la Vida demos live! Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Yes, they have. This is in no way meant to be a definitive guide but off the top of my head here are a few including their varying stages of demo life... They played Vitamins and So Sad in the very early days - these songs were committed to tape only. Ode to Deodorant was also performed yet remained as a demo. In My Place was conceived & performed long before recording for AROBTTH actually started. It was of course eventually released officially but was a problematic song to get right due to how long it had been floating around in their live repertoire. Murder and Animals were played live and although at first intended for AROBTTH, eventually became b-sides (there are a few examples of this, such as No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground). Ladder to the Sun and Idiot didn't make the album or b-sides but were performed. Sweet Marianne and Don Quixote/Spanish Rain also spring to mind as tracks played live but never recorded. Chris has performed Bucket For A Crown & Wedding Bells too and neither of those have appeared anywhere officially.

Q. If you said there were 5th, 6th and 7th members of Coldplay as well then which 3 people would you say would be 5th, 6th and 7th?? Would it be someone already part of the crew or a well known friend?! Just wondering as I would find it difficult to choose :) Thank you! Amy x

The Oracle replies:

The first person for position #6 would possibly be Simon Pegg simply for the reason that before Phil was referred to as the band's 5th member, Simon was often called that due to him performing with them a couple of times. No, seriously I would find it difficult to choose. I think the band would as well to be honest.

There are so many people who have had / still have a valuable role with Coldplay. Some have been around for such a long time too. It's a really tricky hypothetical to get my head around. If I was forced to pick (& this is my own view of course), I'm choosing Tim Crompton, Dan Green and Roadie #42 for having been there from the start and outstanding contribution - or something like that!

Q. Now that Clocks is number one on 6 Music's Greatest Hit, what does Will think about it since at first he thought it was rubbish, like he said in the Q&A part many years back on the Nissan Live sets by Yahoo.

The Oracle replies:

Q. Hi beautiful Oracle, I was wondering is this the original version of The Scientist, that Chris took a month of to practice backwards? Thank-you almighty Oracle Xx

The Oracle replies:

No, Grace. The person that posted that is being sarcastic (a sense of humour regular readers of The Oracle will recognize). What you hear is simply The Scientist reversed. The video was shot forwards but then reversed. This is a version of the original video matched with the song in reverse thus showing that Chris did indeed sing it backwards in the original filming. It did take him about a month to learn but there were a few (backwards) lyrics written on boards in case he needed them for reference.

Q. Hey, I was at a wedding at Bush Hall in Shepherds Bush in London, and on the list of events held/filmed at Bush Hall, it said Coldplay, could you please tell me what Coldplay used the venue for?

The Oracle replies:

I have to say I am struggling to recall any time that the band have ever played Bush Hall because as far as I am aware they haven't! Unless there was a private function, event, ceremony, video etc. I am unaware of. They have definitely played at Shepherd's Bush Empire around the corner more than once.

Q. In the alternate video for Viva La Vida made by Anton Corbijn, it looks like the beach Chris walks onto around 2:36 is the same one he walked on in the music video for Yellow. Is this really the case?

Nope, there was only ever the one video visit to Dorset's Studland Bay.

Q. Oh wise Oracle, I have a question of etiquette to pose to you. My boyfriend and I are both HUGE Coldplay fans (saw the MX tour from the floor and will never ever forget it), so we would have the utmost confidence in whatever guidance you can provide. We are in the unusual situation of sharing the same birthday - February 2 - and while we both find this fact extremely amusing, as the first shared Birthday of our relationship nears, we are faced with a problem: who buys the birthday dinner? Should we just flip a coin, or do you have a more creative solution to offer? Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Following on from yesterday's coin flipping theme... heads or tails? Why don't you just go Dutch? If you split the bill equally it may feel rather unromantic so if you don't fancy that, how about you pay for his share and he pays for yours?

Q. Hi Oracle, The Scientist is my favorite song and has been for years and years and years. I always wondered what the lyrics "Coming up tales" meant, and I had a thought today: is he referring to "coming of age tales" or something of that sort? Is he saying that he is growing up or something? Thanks

The Oracle replies:

It's the other tails; not tales. It's not the rear end of an animal's body either. "Coming up tails" refers to heads or tails. It's the flip of a coin which also explains the next line of the song - "heads on a science apart".

The Oracle replies:

There were quite a lot of different books in the studio around that time about varying styles of graffiti but I'm not sure which they favoured. I'll try and get the names of some the next time I'm in the Bakery but off the top of my head, no particular titles stand out.

Q. Does it take strength to the stop tears or courage to keep you're feelings real and let your eyes flood away?

The Oracle replies:

Better out than in, I alway say. I can't generalise too much as some people find it easy to cry so won't claim it as a brave process. Whether one chooses to cry openly or privately is up to the individual but I find it an essential part of emotional maintenance. I think it's vital to let tears out as I feel it can be detrimental and unhealthy suppressing them. If you're having trouble expressing that side of your nature, maybe watch a sad film, listen to a melancholy song or read something tragic. It may help the floodgates to open.

Q. Dear Oracle, A lot of people seem to be asking this, so I decided to ask it here. Any chance of an acoustic album?

The Oracle replies:

I would never say never. Before MX took the direction it took, the last album's sessions did start out with the idea of making an acoustic record. Obviously that didn't work out and for that reason I doubt the next album will be acoustic. I'm sure we will hear acoustic Coldplay again but whether that's recorded or performance (or both) remains to be seen. Just to let you know, it will be a long time before any details of new material are reported here. I have no idea as yet what the future holds - sound wise.

Q. Morning Oracle! I came across this article about rock star demands... I find this hard to believe "Coldplay demand eight stamped local postcards wherever they go" and as for dreary ... how very dare they!!

The Oracle replies:

I object to their use of the word "demand" more than "dreary". It's an item on their rider - it's hardly a demand. If they think it's dreary for a band to want a local postcard as a memento of where they tour then so be it but it's all media titillation so let's take it with a pinch of salt. I happen to think it's a really good idea. The band have been requesting stamped postcards since their first ever tour. It started with 4 - I didn't realize it had doubled.

Q. Hey Oracle, I was wondering how does the band know which song they wrote will be successful amongst all others. I mean, do they consider certain tastes or points of view before deciding?

The Oracle replies:

I wouldn't use the word successful but personally having worked in the music industry for over 15 years, I can say you do get a feel for what will make a single and what will sound good on the radio. You can also tell (especially when you know a band really well) what will work live. Hearing Charlie Brown for the first time in the studio, myself, Roadie #42 and Anchorman all commented how we could already visualize the crowd jumping up and down. Band, manager and record label have the same instincts to trust which songs will work and do ask for opinion but ultimately the album is down to the band to decide which tracks are in/out and whether they "fit".

Q. Hey Oracle, A while back I bought over 50 Viva chair headrests supposedly from the private Viva La Vida jet/plane. I was wondering whether you have any recollection of Viva headrests on the seats because it would be fun to find out if it was possible the boys really had napped against them? Many thanks.

The Oracle replies:

I'm assuming you mean the single use disposable covers for headrests, rather than actual headrests. I don't recall seeing any Viva ones despite quite a bit of travelling with the band during that period. I do have one from the X&Y tour. It's made from a flimsy material and was attached by velcro. The ones you bought will be unused and therefore I'm afraid the band will not have napped on them.

Q. Hey over there in the UK! I'm a senior in high school and a member of National Honors Society. I am creating a video speaking out against drugs and alcohol through a video of testimonies answering what dreams drugs and alcohol could prevent from coming true. Could I possibly get your permission to use one of my favorite Coldplay songs Fix You as the music for my video? Thank you!

The Oracle replies:

This is one of the most popular questions I get asked. It's tricky because obviously many people want to use Coldplay's music for school projects, personal reasons or worthy causes and aren't showing it for any monetary value whatsoever but signed bands / songwriters do not own copyright to their songs so cannot grant permission.

You will have to contact EMI Records and Universal Publishing.

Q. What happens to the instruments that Coldplay uses after the concerts? Are they using the same over again? And on previous tours, what happens to the bass, guitar and the drums when it's over? Example, what has happened to the instruments that they used in Tokyo from 2009?

The Oracle replies:

Apart from the instruments they auctioned during the end of decade sale, it depends. They do still use some of the same instruments in the studio / on tour but they have also acquired newer ones over the past 15 years. Jonny has guitars that he favours - one he sold in that auction he was pretty reluctant to let go of as one can get quite attached to instruments. His absolute favourite he's had over ten years and has played it on most of the albums and tours since A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Coldplay.com has been around for many, many years (we had a different url originally) but the Timeline isn't indicative of when the website started. Q. I know Coldplay used to be called Starfish, but did they have any other names before that?

The Oracle replies:

They had plenty of names but none that they gigged or recorded under. Starfish was the one they settled on from a selection of equally terrible suggestions - sorry guys! The only other name that they ever used live was Pectoralz but that wasn't serious - it was a jokey side project that didn't last, though one of their songs (Call Me) was recorded by an EMI artist some years later after they themselves were signed as Coldplay (obviously).

Q. I know on one of Faultline's albums, Chris sang in Your Love Means Everything pt.2, and Where is my Boy? So, I was questioning whether David Kosten wrote the song + lyrics, or did CPlay?

The Oracle replies:

They're Faultline tracks with Chris featuring as a vocalist only rather than a songwriting collaboration, so no, Chris didn't write the lyrics.

Q. Did Coldplay ever been opening act for someone in early days?

The Oracle replies:

Yes, they opened for a few people including Muse, U2, Embrace and smaller bands such as Mercedes as well as a joint headline tour with Terris.

Q. Is this the address is should use to send a letter for coldplay:

Coldplay

EMI Records UK

EMI House

43 Brook Green

London, W6 7EF

UK

Or should I use this:

c/o PO Box 246

Cheadle

SK8 9AF

I would be so grateful to know, thanks!!!!!

The Oracle replies:

Neither. EMI moved and the PO Box was closed 4 years ago. We don't have a postal address for physical mail; we prefer to receive electronic messages. It reduces the impact on the environment plus we don't have the resources to receive and house letters etc. There's a contact button on the site...

Q. Hey Oracle! I read in a Danish music magazine that Chris has tried to sell one night with Guy for one million dollars for charity. Is this true or is it just another one of Chris' hilarious jokes?

Love from Denmark!

The Oracle replies:

It's absolutely a joke. I've had a couple of people asking for more details on that auction but of course it's not happening. Chris was making a reference to Guy's good looks. They're all good looking - obviously.

Q. Phil Harvey is always referred to as the 'fifth member of Coldplay' but do you know if he regrets not ever becoming an actual member of Coldplay, as in an onstage member? Thanks, and Happy Christmas!

The Oracle replies:

There was never a time that Phil was considering that position, so no, he doesn't. He's as much part of the band as Chris, Jonny, Will & Guy but it's always been behind the scenes. Phil has appeared in videos and onstage as Elvis during Christmas Lights but Phil has never been in the band as a playing musician. He is musical though which is why his input is such an integral part of the role of 5th member.

Q. Hello Oracle! I just have COLDPLAY LIVE 2012 CD and DVD I was wondering why it has a RED NUMBER ON THE BOTTOM LEFT of the artwork cover???? Mine is 15 what does it mean?? Thanks in advance!

The Oracle replies:

That's the parental guidance age. Age restrictions are in place to determine suitability.

Q. Dearest Oracle, Does Will ever get bored sitting behind his drum set? Chris runs freely around the stage and interacts with the crowd. Guy and Johnny move occasionally. I just wanted to know if Will ever yearns to work the stage a little. Cheers! RJ

The Oracle replies:

It's not like many other bands where the drummer stays in the one spot behind his kit for the entire show so, no. Will gets to move to the front, X Stage, C stage (or whatever variation they've had on previous tours).

I'm sure he wouldn't be a drummer if he wasn't happy with the idea of being at the back. Or he could have chosen to stand up like the drummer in Jellyfish.

January 14, 2013 - submitted by Noah, United States of America

Q. Hey Oracle, what type of vocal warm ups do Chris and the boys do before showtime and how close to showtime do they tend to warm their voices up? I'm a singer and it would really help me! Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Jonny, Will & Guy sit in the dressing room with a pre-recorded warm-up session that takes them through various techniques. Chris goes into a warm-up room with a steam machine to practice vocal acrobatics to get his voice prepared. This tends to happen within an hour of show time before they get dressed into stage gear.

Q. Hey Oracle!:) I was just curious if the guys wore makeup during the shows? I used to do plays and I too had to wear makeup for lighting purposes. Do they as well? Thank you, Ethan (Coldplay 4 Life:D)

The Oracle replies:

Although in musical, dramatic theatre and sometimes television performances make up is worn, no, the band don't wear it. Just imagine how much it would run down Chris & Will's faces with the amount of energy they expel.

Q. Hello Oracle! I was watching some videos of Coldplay and came across this funny one. Does Chris write all his songs like this?

The Oracle replies:

Not exclusively, no. That was more in response to how to write a song but I guess it always starts with an idea. Sometimes lyrics just appear and seem to flow out. Sometimes the essence of the idea grows from inspiration and trying different things out. You may notice that sometimes Chris comes up with an idea for a lyric in one song, only for it to end up in a completely different song. The line "poison in my blood" for example appears in both Wedding Bells & Christmas Lights which weren't written all that far apart. That's why lyrics can contain repeated themes - as is quite common with Chris' songwriting: world turning upside down, keeping feet on the ground, the sun, webs...

Q. Do you think that there's the possibility in the future that Coldplay might release a CD compilation of their unreleased studio tracks and demos? Or are these got rid of at the end of each recording session?

The Oracle replies:

An unreleased studio track would be discarded because it either doesn't "fit" with the album as it takes shape or it's not good enough. If it's the former, there's no reason it wouldn't resurface at a later date. This is one reason it's sad to see the demise of the b-side as many of the great songs appeared that way. If it's the latter, they wouldn't be released on any format for any reason. If an artist wants you to hear something, you will hear it - whether live (as is the case with Spanish Rain for example), at an event (Wedding Bells at the Apple convention) or on a further release (the Prospekt E.P). The thing with demos is, they're exactly that - a demonstration. They are a way to lay down ideas without committing to a full production. If it's decided the idea is worth developing, they can work on that to produce a better version. They're not got rid of as there may be a hook or a riff that they could come back to a later date. Generally it's likely an artist doesn't want a demo to be heard. There are exceptions of course. If it's a song in its entirety that was eventually released, and of a great standard, it could easily appear.

The Safety E.P is a good example. That hadn't been the original idea. The band's recording session for their first E.P didn't quite go to plan. Due to time constraints they needed to release something. Their then A&R man decided they should go with 2 of the 3 tracks that featured on their self-financed Safety E.P. as well as new tracks. The exact recordings from that Safety session were released on the Blue Room E.P. While we're talking about demos that are officially released, one of my favourites ever is Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losing Game.

Q. Hi Oracle! How do you become a volunteer for Coldplay? For eg. The people that hand out wristbands and what not. Just wanted to know out of curiosity :) thanks!

The Oracle replies:

As far as I am aware, "we" don't have volunteers per se. There are obviously people who volunteer at the venues to activate and hand out Xylobands (as mentioned previously), but we don't source the volunteers. If you wanted to volunteer at the venue (whether for Xyloband duties or Oxfam*), you only get to see part of the show as there's a job to do so if you're thinking of doing it to see a free show or meet the band, it's probably best you know now that it's not part of the deal. *You can find out more about becoming an Oxfam volunteer from the charity directly but there's nothing currently planned with us.

Q. I'm not a big comic book fan, but I LOVE Coldplay. Would I like their comics?

The Oracle replies:

It depends on whether you like the concept behind the Mylo Xyloto album and are interested in discovering more about characters and themes. The band don't feature though so bear that in mind. You can probably tell from the artwork and HLH video what the visual for the comic is like so maybe gauge your reaction to that as to whether the comic will be something of interest.

Q. Hey Oracle! Hope you're having a great new year, my question for you is, what city was the music video for Christmas Lights shot in? Please let me know!

The Oracle replies:

The video was shot entirely on location in London.

Q. Hi, Oracle! I was wondering... who does the hand on the cover of The Blue Room belong to? This is silly, but I've been wondering it every time I listen to one of the songs on that EP. Thank you!

The Oracle replies:

It's not silly but we don't know - it's sourced from National Geographic and we had nothing to do with taking it. I answered this question back on November 12, 2010 (wow, where does time go?) so you can read more about the sleeve here.

Q. Oracle, I was reading past answers and I saw that Chris has a mix of ginger, lemon, and hot water that he has during concerts. I'm also a singer and I know that lemon irritates the throat since it's acidic. Does Chris know about this? Or does he have the lemon for a specific reason?

The Oracle replies:

Acidic doesn't have to mean irritant or that it's not good; he wouldn't drink it if it didn't work for him. It also works for me. I also find lemon juice is great for clearing my throat. The combination of honey, water & ginger are perfect to soothe and cleanse. If it doesn't work for you though, obviously steer clear. Whatever works.

January 7, 2013 - submitted by Nat, Brazil

Q. Hello Oracle! Can you tell me what are they doing with all those wristbrands? Are they volunteers? Nat - Brazil

The Oracle replies:

The Xylobands arrive in boxes with little plastic tabs that they need pulling out of position before the audience arrives so that's what they're doing - removing the tab that activates them. They're not Oxfam volunteers but the photo was taken by someone who works for Oxfam who was on the MX tour.
