Q. Dear Oracle, I saw a GIF yesterday, which showed Coldplay crying and they were wearing their Mylo Xyloto clothes.Could you tell me whether that was real and if it was,why were they crying? Thank you, and Happy Birthday Will

The Oracle replies:

The picture is real but without the context you would get the wrong idea. They're not crying - they are pretending to cry. That photo is from an episode of Saturday Night Live where everyone during a skit (comedy sketch) is crying at Adele's Someone Like You.

Q. Hi dear Oracle! Recently, I saw The Simpsons episode Million Dollar Baby from the 21st season, where our beloved band made an appearance. In the episode, homer wins $1,000,000 in the lottery, but, because of the taxes he had to pay to the government, they left him with $685,443.22 on his pocket. With that money, he bought stuff for his family like a washer machine for Marge, a huge star projector for Lisa and a trip on airplane to experience zero gravity with Bart, etc. One of the things he paid for was for a private Coldplay concert. So, my question is, all that have been said, How much does a private Coldplay concert cost? I want to know cause I'm turning 22 next week. I'm willing to pay the airplane tickets and the hotel suites. (At least we know is less than $700,000). PS: Please, tell Chris, Jonny and Guy that they have to come back to Colombia and Happy Birthday to Will! A huge hug for You and the guys. Best Wishes from Bogota, Colombia!!!

The Oracle replies:

The Simpsons episode hasn't got any truth to it whatsoever I'm afraid. Despite whatever costs Homer shelled out and what was left, that doesn't mean in reality that it would be under $700,000 to hire the band; there is no price as the band are not for hire. By the way, I think any band would need more than a week's notice to pull together a show. I was going to suggest that you look for a Coldplay tribute band but it really might be too late for a booking.

Q. Dear Oracle, Can you please tell me more about the remix at the end of this video? Who made it? is it available for download? I can't get it out of my head! Thanks.

The Oracle replies:

It's not a remix; it's The Scientist playing backwards.

Q. Hi Oracle! I was watching an old interview with Chris and Jonny (from 2005, I think) and I was surprised when Chris mentioned that Jonny is an astronomer. Is this true or was he joking? Thank you for your time! V

The Oracle replies:

Jonny did indeed study astronomy (& maths) at UCL.

Q. Hi Oracle! Do you know what is Guy's favorite song to play? why?

The Oracle replies:

On the last tour one of Guy's favourite songs to play was Charlie Brown. It was the anticipation of the wristbands - knowing they were about to start flashing.

Q. What's the next big thing, oh great Oracle?

The Oracle replies:

I hate the fact there's a name for this given there are cabaret clubs etc. that offer the same but I have a feeling it's going to be destination restaurants a.k.a Destaurants. Destaurants plan to keep the customer in one destination all night by providing a dining experience & entertainment.

Q. Okay this question probably has a real obvious answer but where can I view the art that was in the Exhibition Room? I thought it would be on the hypnofeed. How do I find all the other awesome stuff? Mahalo!

Q. Hello Oracle, I've been a Coldplayer since I was 8 but there's a little problem, I've never known what was the name of this intro (if it has) that the band used during their AROBTTH tours for Yellow is? (0:00 - 0:55)

The Oracle replies:

It hasn't got a name and it is exactly what you said; an intro. It was an extended intro for the AROBTTH tour but still part of the song rather than a separately named entity. There isn't an official studio recorded version (single, album etc.) but obviously it is available on Live 2003.

Q. Hello Oracle! I was wondering if the hidden track The Escapist (one of my favorites by my favorite band!) was inspired by the Jon Hopkins song, Light Through the Veins? If not, where did Coldplay find the inspiration to create the track? Thanks in advance, Iris.

The Oracle replies:

It sounds like you may not know that The Escapist was written by Jon and Chris back in 2007. The original version was longer but they trimmed it down for the album.

Q. Hello, Oracle. I have a very serious problem. I was talking with a very close friend of mine, and she began sharing one of her ideas for a book she wants to write (we are both writers). I was trying to criticize her idea, but it turned into insulting the idea unintentionally. She is currently mad at me, and I really want to apologize, but I don't know the best way to do so without high risk of injury. I wrote a letter of apology that I will give to her, but I really don't know how else to be sincere about it. I feel terrible. Is there anything else I can do? She's one of the best friends I've ever had, and I would like us to still be friends. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

The Oracle replies:

Where you went wrong was to criticize instead of critique. Nobody like criticism unless it's constructive. Think how you'd feel if it was the other way around. Then think about how she could make it right. When you know what you'd need to hear, see if you can put that into words. Failing that just tell her what you told me. Send that letter!

Q. In the credits for Yeezus it says Chris Martin wrote on the track Guilt Trip. I remember Chris was in Paris a few months back when Kanye was working on the album. Is this Coldplay's Chris Martin?

The Oracle replies:

As you probably know Chris has collaborated with Kanye before (on Homecoming) but no, that's not our Chris. It's DJ Premier & his real name is also Chris Martin.

Q. Most Coldplay fans know that 'Til Kingdom Come was originally written to be sung with Johnny Cash. I would like to know if Cash had not passed when he did, would he have been on the track on X&Y?

The Oracle replies:

That's not quite accurate, Greg. The song wasn't written to be sung with Johnny; it was written for Johnny to sing. If he hadn't died the song would not have been on X&Y at all, it would have been on the planned Johnny Cash album.

Q. Hi Oracle! If I wanted to buy the comics, should I even though I'm not really knowledgeable on comics? Enjoy your summer x

The Oracle replies:

I'm not into comics either and haven't a clue about such things but I think if you have an interest in the artist you will find the comic of interest too. That's what I found with both my only previous experience - a DC Comics Prince comic back in 1991 - and Mylo Xyloto.

Q. Hello Oracle, Do you and Coldplay guys know the Athlete Band (the band of the singer Joel Pott)?

They have great and harmonic songs as Coldplay. I would like to watch a presentation with the two of them together. Is it possible to happen? Thank you!

The Oracle replies:

Did you know that the same guy who signed Coldplay later signed Athlete? They were label mates for a while. There isn't likely to be a collaboration but I'm sure they will both be on the same bill at festivals again as they have in the past. Athlete have been touring their 10th year anniversary show recently. I was sent their demo back in 2000 and know the man who managed them back then and subsequently signed them to Fiction well but I don't know the band. I met one of the guys in a pub near me a few months ago. Nice chap.

Q. Hello there! I have gotten the amazing opportunity to study in London for a semester, and I was wondering what your top 5 favorite places were?? These could be places to eat, drink, relax, think, etc. Thanks! Sammy

The Oracle replies:

I hope you don't mind me presuming that as a student you'll prefer me to suggest places that won't break the bank. Some of these are my favourite places but not all are "top 5" in terms of the best. Eat: Bistro 1, (3 locations). Drink: The Nicholson chain (various locations) is competitive for booze or Flat White (Soho) for coffee. Relax: Any of the parks. Think: Hampstead Heath. I also recommend the British Library where you can do all 4! Most of London's major museums and galleries are free admission with a voluntary donation. They have lockers or left luggage so I suggest checking in your belongings and taking a leisurely stroll around the magnificent exhibits. Here are a few other ideas: Live music: Barfly (Camden). Shopping: Westfield Centre (Shepherd's Bush or Stratford) for High St. shopping. Spitalfields or Borough for markets. Night Club: Ultimate Power. Cinema: Everyman (various locations). Views: Southbank for street level landmarks, Primrose Hill for elevated. There are obviously so many things to do in London but it's certainly worth considering both tourist attractions and discovering off the beaten track experiences. There are plenty of theatre, cabaret and comedy nights to unearth without necessarily being West End prices. One other thing, if the good weather continues, try outdoor film screenings or a visit to the infamous Globe Theatre - take a cushion! Have a great stay, Sammy.

Q. I'd like to know if the Coldplay studios (Beehive and Bakery) are only used for recording or for mixing also? I love the sound of the band! Thanks in advance!

The Oracle replies:

With MX a lot of the mixing took place at their studios as they went along but when the album was finished, its final mix took place in New York as their favoured mixer Michael Brauer works from there - though Spike Stent also mixed MX.

Q. Is Coldplay allowed to play Gravity at a concert even though the gave the song to Embrace? And do you think they would remember how to play it?

The Oracle replies:

Anyone can play anything live regardless of who had the "hit" with it so yes, they can play the song. Plus as the song's original writers, it would never be an issue to perform or record Gravity. I'm sure they can remember how to play it though from time to time they do forget certain parts. It comes back... a bit like riding a bike - you never totally forget, just get a little rusty.

July 18, 2013 - submitted by Christina, United States of America

Q. Dearest Oracle, I have been trying to find a specific version of Yellow that I heard. It was acoustic and slower than the original and Chris sings with a lower voice. The live 2012 is the closest I have gotten but it isn't the whole song. Is there a version of the whole song like that? It's my absolute favorite. Thanks, Christina

The Oracle replies:

There are acoustic versions of the song available on CD, but they won't be identical to the version you seek. Live 2012 has a slower intro and then built into the climax. There's an acoustic version on the God Put A Smile Upon Your Face EP but the most well-known one out there was from Jo Whiley's Lunchtime Social (Radio 1) that was available on a promo CD called Acoustic.

July 18, 2013 - submitted by Erick, Mexico

Q. Hello wise Oracle. Is there any official bootleg or any way to buy or get a recording from a show of the Twisted Logic Tour? Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

An official bootleg would be a contradiction, Erick. A bootleg is - by definition - an unauthorized, unofficial recording. There isn't an official recording (audio or video) of the Twisted Logic tour, though there are clips online such as YouTube.

Q. Why can't I buy all of the comic books together anymore, instead of buying each one separately?

The Oracle replies:

Q. I recently wondered about the twitter account @hypnofeed. Is this account run by Coldplay (perhaps Anchorman?) or is this a fan account?

July 16, 2013 - submitted by Travis, United States of America

Q. When Chris is writing songs in between albums/on tour, how does he resist the urge from sharing them with fans? I'm sure there are obvious reasons, but I think that having an amazing song that had to wait for an album would be like winning the lottery and not being able to tell anybody about it! Travis

The Oracle replies:

Yesterday I answered a question that mentions the new songs played at the tail end of the Parachutes tour. Historically it's happened quite a few times since such as Wedding Bells, Spanish Rain / Don Quixote... They also previewed tracks from AROBTTH and MX at live shows before the albums were available.

Q. Dear Oracle I am an aspiring music writer, and I am currently writing material, something is bugging me though, does anybody gonna give a shit about my music. I have the feeling no matter how good it is with so many great musicians in the internet it's hard to stand any chance?

The Oracle replies:

With an attitude like that, you will get nowhere! C'mon man, where's your fight? Seriously, yes, it is tough out there but the very first reason you should ever make music is for yourself. Therefore if you give a sh*t about it, that's a very good start. Work hard and stop worrying about the competition. If you want to stand out, just be better than the rest. Write every day and don't give up. Imagine if Neil Young or Bob Dylan or Janis Joplin or Robert Plant or Ray Davies or Thom Yorke or Chris Martin et al. had given up at the first hurdle. If a chance is all you think you have then make sure it's a talented chance and be the best you can. I'll be watching out for your name...

Q. Hi Oracle, I was just reminiscing about seeing my favourite band ever, playing my favourite venue ever- Coldplay at the Royal Court Theatre (Crisis gig). Have you seen your favourite artists at the venue you favour most?

The Oracle replies:

Funnily enough I was at that gig and when I was there I told the band that the last time I'd been there was also my first time there to see a band that shaped my life - Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1984.

I'm very lucky to have seen Coldplay in some of my favourite venues (some that no longer exist): Manchester Roadhouse, Borderline, Camden Falcon... One of my favourite venues around the world is Amsterdam's Paradiso but sadly I didn't see anyone I particularly like there. I won't say who because the band love him! Ha ha! There have been stand out gigs in amazing venues over the years and some have luckily matched with my favourite artists: Tori Amos at Free Trade Hall, Ryan Adams at London Palladium, World Party at Royal Albert Hall but sadly some venues don't do my favourites justice - that's especially true for Prince. I like the smaller intimate venues so the nearest for him have been aftershows such as Bagleys & Indigo in London but they're not on my preferred venue list.

Q. Hello Oracle! How are you? I found this video from a live concert from the Parachutes era playing A Rush Of Blood To The Head. As you can see, the lyrics are different comparing with the album version, so, the question is: How many AROBTTH songs were composed and played during the Parachutes era? Thanks for seeing all our questions and for answering them!! Greetings from Franco :)

The Oracle replies:

In 2000 and 2001, Coldplay toured the live circuit almost continuously to promote Parachutes. It was from October that they started to introduce new songs that were being written on the road for their second album - In My Place being one of them. Some of those songs didn't make it such as Animals. In April 2001, A Rush Of Blood to the Head and God Put A Smile Upon Your Face were introduced followed by Murder and Idiot which again, didn't make the final album.

Q. Dear Oracle, have you ever requested the band to play a song for you, be it in rehearsals or soundchecks or even a studio? Would Chris sing you Green Eyes if you asked him nicely being the nice man he is? :)

The Oracle replies:

Ha! Yes, I have - once. My birthday a couple of years ago I asked for Politik even though I wasn't going to be at the show. Chris asked the band's P.A to call me so I could hear it. I was told not to answer my phone but when I listened to it back it was terrible audio quality. Thankfully Roadie #42 came to my rescue and sent me an amazing version by MP3. It's my favourite recording of the band live ever. Previous to asking, Chris has dedicated that song to me many times as he knows it's my favourite. I've had a few dedications over the years at soundchecks and shows but the very first time was Don't Panic back in 1999 at a tiny venue. He said it was for me and my new haircut and hastily added that there was nothing wrong with my hair & that's not why he was singing Don't Panic.

Over the last few months we have seen many instances where fans have met Coldplay around their Bakery and Beehive studios in North London. This prompted Coldplayer oldmuckers pose the question on the forums, "Are the Bakery visits getting out of hand?"

As of 19th July, 64% of Coldplayers say yes, the visits were getting out of hand. Most recently there have been rumours that there is now a bodyguard standing by at the Beehive but this has not been substantiated.

Thanks to everyone who has voted and made a contribution to the discussion so far; below are some of the comments from that thread, as are the latest poll results, and of course some new photos of fans with Coldplay near the Bakery just yesterday (Thursday 18th July)...

The opening argument...

Oldmuckers wrote: "This is a debate that is growing among coldplayers and one that I find very interesting. I personally can see both sides of the argument and an curious to hear other’s opinions. Are too many fans starting to visit the bakery too often?

Is it becoming a distraction to the band or even worse an invasion of privacy. Or is it just a part of fame that they seem to graciously accept? I will give the guys credit… they do always seem happy to take time for the fans visiting them but when, if ever, will it become too much? It very well could be a much appreciated show of support that motivates them or it could be a growing irritant that they are unsure of how to handle. After all if one of them were to lose their temper with a fan, even after being extremely generous to hundreds of other, which story is going to make the papers.

This is where the band creates the music we all love, a place of great interest to fans that anyone would want to see, but it is also where they work… it is an interesting question that really calls upon how much access we should have to those who choose to be public figures and what that means in terms of the private process that is artistic creativity. Answer a simple yes or no in the poll but feel free to state your reasons in the comments."

The debate... (warning: long!)

Apparently there's a bodyguard at The Beehive now... [thanks The Master]

I visited The Bakery today (19 July) and met Will, there was a guy who looked like a bodyguard/security who was waiting outside in a car with blacked out windows. A woman came out of The Bakery and got in the car which then drove off. All this had happened before Will had even arrived. When I met Will he was walking to The Beehive, he came up to me and said hello. He seemed happy to see me and was very nice. I guess it might get a bit annoying for the band when there is a large amount of fans who are being instrusive. I was the only fan who was there so I quietly waited for someone to turn up. If you are thinking of going to the studio just be calm and patient as I'm sure that's the way the band would want you to be. So yeah I think these visits are okay as long as the fans act respectfully. [thanks SevenSixFiveFourThree]

When i went, they seemed more than happy about it, i mean i met will first and when they all came out jonny and guy walked out and came to me! so im guessing Will told them i was there. If they were getting annoyed im sure they would have crossed the road, walked fast and not come towards. Then when i saw Phil when i was walking back, he even asked if i had seen the rest of the band and that chris would be back that afternoon, if i wanted to see him. In all i think they are grateful that people are coming to see them, and its not like we waste their alot of their time. When i went i spent the whole of 30 sec with Jonny and guy and when i saw Will and Phil they were asking me questions. Thats my opinion anyways! [thanks mayurshikotra]

So as you guys probably already have seen "abcdefghijkANNA" visited the bakery yesterday: She took pictures with all the guys, got a ton of autographs and actually sat down on a bench with Chris.

I know you can't really judge how the guys feel about fans visiting just by looking at the pictures. But... there is not a slight indication that the guys don't like fans visiting them or that they feel uncomfortable about it. Especially Chris sitting down on the bench and having a chat with the girl, doesn't seem like he doesn't enjoy fans visiting the bakery. Maybe he just wanted to be polite but if people see the pictures they will clearly think the guys have no problem with fans visiting and it will encourage more fans to go there and give it a shot. So if they dont want fans to go there (which i honestly think is not the case) they are definitely sending the wrong signals. [thanks cheeetaz]

I'm afraid all the attention and enthusiasm people get after meeting them and telling their story in the Bakery thread, may be encouraging to some to go try and meet the band. Plus sharing info about who is in the studio now, when they come and go, where have meals - it all helps more people to find them. Of course it lies on each person to decide how to behave, but I think this forum community shall have its policy about it, like it has about not sharing officially released songs. Like some very general guidelines about things, that are not encouraged to be done. Personally, I have little problem with the whole thing. I only cringe when people tell about shouting for a band member, while he's walking two blocks away. Somehow, I find that disrespecting. And knocking on the door, disrupting them from whatever they are busy with, talking with them for a long time - that is kind of impolite. But on the whole, I think that guys see talking to fans as part of their job. And they obviously don't mind people coming to see them - as mainly they are nice, supportive and coming only in that short period of time, when band is not touring/having rest/recording somewhere else. [thanks lafinion]

How are you going to tell whether they are being disrupted when you knock on the door? A sign on the door saying 'MAKING LP6 MOM JUST LEAVE ME ALONE I'M BUSY' (or something to that effect)? I think it's great that this sort of discussion is happening. I think fan etiquette isn't really talked about enough tbh, especially considering some of the gross postings that have been made on this board (and I probably used to be a huge culprit) Let us first point out the obvious: 1) it will continue as long as the band allows it to especially as so many people know where it is now. 2) those people are not doing anything legally wrong unless harassment/stalking starts. [thanks Cobalt]

Coldplay are big boys, aren't they? It sure is nice to care and discuss about that, but in the end Coldplaying only represents a very very tiny part of the whole fandom and people are gonna go there whether we say that it's good or not. We actually can't do anything about it. Once it's out, it's out, and the band is very well aware of it. It sure seems that lately it's been a bit too much but if the band is getting annoyed with this, they'll discuss the matter between them and then will find a solution (hire security, ask their crew to tell the fans that the band's not here, shorten each meeting...). I don't think that our opinion on this forum will matter to the craziest of fangirls, and tbh this forum seems really reasonable compared to the average tumblr or to fan forums for other bands and artists. I mean, ever since visiting the Bakery has become some sort of "trend", it looks like there's a post suggesting it might be too much every 5 pages or so...

I obviously don't like to hear stories of fans going too far (going there several times in a short period of time when they've already met them, ringing at the door etc etc), but as I said, once it's out, once it's out. We can't do much about it. And then again, as a fan who loves them deeply but has never met them, even if I think that things are getting out of hand, if i have the chance to go to London there's a 99.5% chance that I will go to the Bakery. I can't see that not happening. If the band specifically asks everyone to stop, then of course I'll listen to them, but as long as there's no declaration from them, I don't see why I wouldn't go if I had the opportunity...

I wouldn't go there just to get a signature from them. I mean, it's just a note on a CD. Hell, I'm not even sure that if a meeting would actually occur (sing Hallelujah) I would think of asking them my brain would be too busy trying to make me stand and breathe and yeah i totally understand people saying they feel weird about asking for an autograph, because i would feel weird too. To me, the point of going to the Bakery is to see the place where the magic happens AND to have a chance to actually interact with them. Tbh, i don't want much from them. A picture would be awesome, an autograph sure would be super cool. But the chance to talk to them, even for 2 minutes and tell them that their music means a lot to me and that i can't wait for the next album holycrap just thinking about it i get emotional. Everyone has told them that already, but i wouldn't care. I'd visit the Bakery to have the chance to tell them that I personally think they're awesome and I love them, but not to get some trophy from them. it doesn't change the fact that when going to the Bakery we're doing something a bit stalkerish, but honestly I think the intention is still worth mentioning. I wouldn't support anyone who goes there just to get an autograph and say "i met someone famous". I feel sorry to read stories where people would focus just on getting something signed by the band...

We just know that today, at the moment when a fan visited, there was a bodyguard in front of the Beehive, but she hasn't given any other detail regarding this yet. She did meet them, they did come to her, but yes, a bodyguard is a sign that should be taken into account. I'm just waiting for a full "fan story" report before jumping to conclusions (she also said that there was a lot going on that day, the bodyguard could have been there because, idk, something important was happening or something, but yeah the first thing i thought too was that it was a sign there are too many people going). [thanks Coeurli]

I voted no but I think the yes threshold can be close to be reached. Let's say that more or less 30/40 fans (including me ) have met the band so far (from the MX Exhibition), and I'm just just approximately counting fans that went intentionally to the Bakery and have posted their photos/reviews online: I think they don't represent a problem for them...now. Fans just ask them an autograph and a picture, or maybe a handshake, and this just takes some minutes of their life. Maybe it's too easy to find where the bakery is: i just need to google "Coldplay Bakery" to find where they daily work. So I think the number of fans going there just to see them could rapidly increase, given the facility of the word of mouth and internet and forums; should we keep the bakery location more secret? up to you. [thanks The Goldrush]

Is it a distraction/annoyance to the band? who can say, but I will point out that they could easily hire so security and be whisked into the building without ever actually being "rude" to fans (indeed not acknowledging them at all), and since they seem to choose to go totally the opposite route, I'd guess they're ok with it, at least for the time being. They're not the only band with a studio complex in a location known to fans and this kind of thing is fairly common in those situations (though I've never heard of a band that interacts with those fans the way Coldplay does here). I guess what I'm saying is that while it's not something I have any interest in doing, and there have been stories of some fans doing some really inappropriate things (the fans ringing the bell after the Christmas Lights shoot for example), it's just something that's going to continue to happen as long as the band are headquartered there. They've encouraged the fan presence by the level of attention they give, and as long as they do that, the numbers of fans there will probably continue to grow. All anyone's really doing is standing around on a public street, so even if the band wanted to do something to curb it, they'd be somewhat limited in their options as the fans aren't actually doing anything illegal. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me the "can't do anything about it" thing comes in to play in that no matter how much we discuss things here, in the end it won't make a bit of difference as far as people turning up at the bakery, so it just seems kind of fruitless to have a discussion on the topic. Consider what's probably the most widely community accepted standard here: The prohibition on posting images of the band members' children. Virtually everybody who posts here agrees it's crossing the line, yet those pics do end up posted here from time to time. To put it bluntly, the censure of a bunch of people who post here doesn't mean much in the scheme of things, so there's no real use getting bent out of shape over something beyond our control. In fairness, I don't see Thom Yorke or any of the other radiohead guys (with the possible exception of Colin) responding to that type of fan the way Coldplay do though. They're reserved in general, which tends to breed the same attitude in their fan base. In contrast, the Coldplay guys are go to an almost unreasonable length to accommodate fans outside their studio, which breeds the opposite fan reaction. [thanks fakfak]

I don't see too many Bakery threads/posts (Because I'm never in here) but I do remember once a girl made a thread about meeting the entire band individually, not once, but also the next day. She said she explained to them that she traveled so far etc. blah blah and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity (Taken twice) blah blah and the band were nice enough to pretend it wasn't weird and ridiculous. Like you just got your photos, what more could you want? What more can you achieve by going back? Enjoy your holiday. But it doesn't surprise me that a fangirl can take such advantage of people they love, what did surprise me a bit was that in that thread not one person replied with, "Twice? Really?!". It was just excitement and congratulations. I mean sorry for the constant Radiohead comparisons, but if some Radiohead fan posted that they'd get a sharp dose of "Leave them the fuck alone". Well actually you'd probably get that for even posting 1 set of photos with Radiohead, but c'mon, 2 days in a row? That's acceptable to you people? OK...

Yes I posted in the thread earlier about the girl who just had to go back again the next day, to meet the exact same people, in the exact same circumstances, except a day later. The only thing I found funny about it was that you could tell from the pictures they were a bit like "OK, this girl, again..." If there's people doing it over and over, if they've already met them, I just don't understand it either. I'm just that way that I don't care to meet any of my favourite musicians (Which from reading about people's obsessions with meeting Coldplay, I feel lucky) but if anyone really feels that the way they inspire you means you definitely need to meet the band, I don't get how that could mean you need to meet them over and over again. It just sounds like an empty hole trying to be filled. [thanks Reilly]

I voted yes in the poll because I remember when I was a teenager I had a crush on Alejandro Sanz and I remember him moving from his house after the first album success because a lot of people had discovered where he lived ( I know that's not the same here, but his home was the place where he worked on his music ) and he was unable to concentrate on his work. So I know that they are very graceful with the people who is going there, but I am worried that this matter will end up annoying them and as a consequence their working time would be affected. Furthermore I went to London the summer of 2011 and I went to visit the John Keats museum (I love his work) that happens to be very close to the Bakery and just because I knew that the band was on tour I dared to go and pass in front of the place were they create their music, otherwise I wouldn't dared to go, but just because I am like that. But of course everyone is free to do whatever they want and think is appropriate. [thanks rousi]

it's tricky, because obviously the band and their crew would indicate in some way if the fan meetings were getting to be way too much. on the other hand, i don't think anyone wants it to get to that point, either. Coldplay fans seem to be fairly respectful in general, and it's possible that while the recent number of people visiting the Bakery seems a bit overwhelming to someone like me, it may not faze them if they're used to being around a large number of fans (though there's a distinct difference between being surrounded by fans in a venue and having fans come to a private place of work). personally, if i had a chance to visit, i would probably stop and get a picture of myself near the alleyway, but if i didn't happen to run into anyone outside, i don't think i would wait around... it may seem like a moot point to "debate" this sort of thing, but it's good to know where everyone stands on where the line should be drawn, right? [thanks coldplayisawesome]

I agree that fan etiquette isn't talked about enough, I mean me, myself, rang a doorbell (this was early October last year I think), I am ashamed of this, I mean the shutters were down at the time meaning no one was in but I couldn't resist and I think it shows a lack of respect and understanding of privacy, when the truth is Coldplay are my heroes and some of the people I respect the most. I do however, think that Coldplay fans are overall very respectful and have good 'fan-etiquette', as perhaps compared to the Justin Bieber fandom or One Direction fandoms overall. In the end, the truth is we all love Coldplay and everyone who goes there is only going there for that reason. [thanks Mollyxyloto]

I was there the time that the door bell was rung, I was with a few girls older than me and they were talking about how somebody rung it and asked if the band was coming out i think and were asked to sit at a bench not so far off. On seeing the band come out people were running like crazy across to see them. I'm kind of ashamed of myself for following but I was a really big fan back then and meeting them was like the dream so i can understand why people do it. The lady who rung the bell was rude to Chris saying how she was disappointed the band weren't on the boat and was rushing round all the band members getting photos and signatures from each of them. I hung back because it scared me a little how determined some people are to get photos, anyway Chris pointed to me and said to the others to let me have a photo and was checking that it was alright. The band stopped and chatted a little while and asked everyone where they were from, apologised for how cold it was on the boat etc. and they said they had to go somewhere and generally they didn't seem to mind. I wouldn't want to go back even if i was still a big fan I just don't see the point and repeatedly going to the same place to find a person does kind of border on stalking to me. [thanks Cyan Kat]

when even Phil Harvey on at least one occasion said that "the boys were inside the Bakery (or was it the Beehive) - wait here for x minutes, then the entire band are leaving". And someone (Phil Harvey?) said the other day that "Chris is here not today - he will be here on Thursday" - well it could be seen as an encouragement to return that Thursday. And the fans did. The band members have said that being in a band and everything related to it - be it recording / giving concerts / talking to fans and signing stuff - all this is a job for them. They are thankful to their fans for "having given them the best job in the world". So they are kind to their fans visiting them. It is quite different when being in a hurry to catch a flight or train - or being with family somewhere - then they want to have some privacy. Chris once said that it was difficult sometimes - he could not even walk down the street with his wife - then the couple would be surrounded by / chased by paparazzi. My conclusion: It seems to be okay with fans visiting the Bakery / Beehive and asking for a signature/a photo there, but not when meeting them in the airport / with family, because then they would like fans to respect their privacy. [thanks nancyk58]

As some of you may remember, I visited The Bakery on my 19th birthday last month on the off chance of meeting the band and I luckily met all of them. When we arrived at The Bakery we met another Coldplayer who met Phil earlier in the morning who told her that all of the band would be here by 12:30; and Phil wasn't wrong, they were here by 12:30. We met all of them, and then Chris and Phil a hour later. If Phil or the band weren't too keen on fans meeting them then I'm sure he wouldn't have told a fan a specific time that the band would be arriving. When we met them they seemed rather relaxed by the situation and looked genuinely pleased to meet us; we even started talking about football to them (particularly Will) and they engaged with us really well. We respected them in the fact that we didn't go knocking on doors, we didn't shout them, we didn't hover outside the entrance to The Bakery, we just waited patiently and quietly on the bench till someone appeared. One question I will ask is this.....I know that all us Coldplayers don't all live in the UK, and that's great because it just shows the vast amount of support they have all around the globe, but if you were in London for a day or two, would you take a quick visit The Bakery on the off chance of meeting someone.....? I understand both sides of the story and I do think it's a fair point to raise, and this thread has made for good reading, but I'll never forget the day I met all five of them. [thanks ColdplaySheffield]

I am late to this thread, but I voted yes even if it doesn't change the fact that people would still do it. Here are some random thoughts: 1) The Bakery/ Beehive aren't a listed sightseeing place in London, so I would assume that it is not fine for people to visit it whenever they can. It's not a holy place, it is simply a working place. 2) I don't agree with the fact that since the band doesn't seem to mind, then it's ok to visit. I mean, who wouldn't get irritated if they are interrupted from walking the street to their work place everyday by people shouting their name, asking for autographs & such? Perhaps they are just so nice to disappoint anyone, but that doesn't mean taking advantage of that. Some of them might be in a hurry, or simply not in a good mood. I know Guy is usually shy & quiet. They can't be ready everyday to meet fans, even if they were the best type of fans. 3) I have read a story of people waiting outside Chris' home I have seen 2 videos of him & people asking him to say hello to their friends & that made me furious. What on earth do you think he is? a talking doll that you own? Come on Chris, hold this sign, see what I have for you, say hi to tons of people you don't even know. Then dare call this respectful act of fans. 4) The theory of: if they are not ok with it, then they would hire a security doesn't make sense. The norm is that people should be able to work without the need of accompanying security all the time. Would you pleased if they had to hire one to keep fans from jumping at their faces all the time? Yeah sure, they are rich & can afford that, but forcing them to do it is a thing I can't understand. 5) They are celebrities & that's the price of fame! Oh well, so why not punish them for being successful & famous? [thanks Safy]

For now, I doubt having occasional fans spring up at their doorstep isn't too obstructive during their recording sessions, but it's too early to really see how much of an impact or interference it has on them. If they really got tired of people coming up to the bakery, I would imagine the guys would most likely have a sign indicating that they're busy and need no interruptions. Perhaps even a security guard would be at the door. But for now I see no reason why fans shouldn't be able to take a mellow trip to the bakery if it's so easily accessible and the guys welcome fans with open arms. Again only time will tell, but for now it's not out of hand. [thanks Ghostly]

I think the biggest problem are the fans who go there over and over and over again and wait around for several hours. And those people don't all live in or near London. Why would you spend several hours waiting on a bench when you're visiting London when you've already met them before? That's just stupid and it doesn't make any sense. [thanks Tash]

So, I told myself I wasn't going to reply to this thread... then I realised that as small as my opinion is... I think it's worth an airing. I remember I was living in London when the first rumblings of 'finding' the Bakery appeared on the forum, very few people took notice, most people were simply excited to know where it was. The times I visited the area were simply due to visiting friends & going to one of my favourite pubs for trivia night & a pint. Now, mostly due to the fact we are currently between tours & albums, the fans kind of want something to focus on, and the focus has quickly become meeting the guys at the Bakery/Beehive. Honestly, posts on a forum are not going to stop fans from trying to meet the band, pretty much all it will do is stop people from posting their photos & experiences. Regarding fan etiquette, I've found over the years, through different fandoms, that there is never a way to enforce any kind of etiquette beyond the simplicity of "Just be nice!". We are all free-willed human beings, if someone wants to do something, then they will go do it (& frankly, many fans don't care what other fans think). Having a few years behind me (I'm in my early 30's) and having 'grown' up through fandoms, I think another misunderstood part of fandom is age. A 16 year-old fan is going to act & react differently to a 30 year-old fan etc, each could behave well or badly depending on the situation. There is quite a bit of research out there about fandom and the psyche, the way the brain (& therefore behaviour) reacts to obsession & passion etc. And finally, this is freaking Coldplay guys... if they didn't want to be disturbed, then they would find a way for it to happen. Yes, they are very kind & generous with their time, surely they get some enjoyment out of meeting fans. Should fans be rude to them, no. But as I said before, you cannot control another person's behaviour. In the end, the only actions we can control are out own. We all live in little glass fandom houses, I don't think any of us should think that stone throwing is ok. So, there's my 5 cents/pence... [thanks blondeisotope]

speaking as someone who has visited the Bakery I would feel very awkward if I said that I don't think anyone should go. I've, as some of you know, had a 'Close encounter' with Chris. He was walking with Moses and I didn't say hello because I was; firstly terrified of saying something, and secondly didn't want to bother him when he was with his son. I had my son with me, who is also a fan and since all this madness has ensued, people meeting them, talking to them, even with their kids... Now if I am completely honest, I have regretted it ever since. Regretted not stopping him, if only for a second to say. Hi.. I love your music. Now it seems there is a guard on the door. Does this signal the end of the casual fan turning up? Will fans soon be standing behind ropes? If it becomes too much will they have to move to another place? Somewhere less accessible? Will they get big gates put in? Not come out and see anyone? I sincerely hope this won't happen. But if as someone seems to suggest there are now guards on the doors, then it seems the natural progression. I would never suggest people don't go. I completely understand the desire to do so. I would love to go back one day and meet them. But not if they are hiring guards. That small step seems to shout to me... keep away. I would love to tell them what they mean to me. But ONLY if they are happy to do it. Can you imagine if you turned up and they were irritated or angry? Told you to go away as they were busy? It would be dreadful. But I can see a time when that happens. So right now, yes I do think there are too many people going to the bakery. HOW or what to do to stop this I have no answer. As I said above I don't think that the visits should stop! Far from it. Just wish there were less of them. [thanks Comicforce]

I reread my previous post & realized it seemed more angry than I thought. At first when I joined this forum I loved reading about fans meeting the band. I was naive to think they were accidental, like someone who was passing by near the bakery & had a chance to meet the band. When I discovered that some of these encounters are intentional, I got uneasy with them, hence my reply. Maybe I am just silly, but I think that no matter what a person is (celebrity or random people) , we all deserve our privacy. I would think that most people would love to walk to their work or home uninterrupted. Maybe it's good that people are showing their respect & love for the band, but too much of anything is annoying. Nowadays, it doesn't seem like that to me, but more of a trend going among fans that everyone must follow. Like, if someone has done, so why can't I do it too? It's a trend that won't stop easily, even if the band were forced to add security on the doors, or even accompanying security when crossing the street! It is a working place after all, to them at least. It is not a museum. People in the neighbourhood might not even be interested in the band, but they might get annoyed by the increasing number of strange people waiting on benches for a door to open to jump at someone screaming their name! What we usually read are one sided story from the point of view of fans. We can't form an opinion about that the band actually encourages their fans to come to visit. How would we know if one band member or the other thinks " this fan is a bit creepy/ I have to go somewhere right now/ this is annoying but I should not disappoint them". I know I can't tell that this actually what might be going through their minds at some point, but it's a possibility that has to be considered. To me, I wouldn't go anywhere unless I were invited. I am a conservative person that wouldn't even visit a friend without being invited so yeah!! [thanks Safy]

Q. Dear Oracle, I saw in Wikipedia the 3th track of Don't Panic Single is Bigger Stronger Live. What version is it?

The Oracle replies:

When Don't Panic was released - in some territories - as a 4th single, Bigger Stronger Live was one of the b sides. It was recorded at Rockefeller Music Hall, Oslo, Norway on 1 December 2000.

There was also the Trouble Norwegian Live EP which featured Trouble, Shiver, Sparks, Yellow and Everything's Not Lost recorded from the same show.

Q. Hi there Oracle, What sort of things do the band eat while they are on tour?

The Oracle replies:

Oh the most delicious food! The band and crew are catered for by Eat to the Beat. The team work tirelessly round the clock to provide varied fresh and tasty menus. The band do tend to stick to the healthier options when they're touring but how anyone can resist some of the amazing desserts is beyond me! Check out the sample menus on this blog which will give you an idea of what food on the road is like when on a Coldplay tour - Eat to the Beat catered for Strictly Come Dancing's tour too.

Q. Hey Oracle, a few months ago Coldplay had an exhibition of some of their pieces from Mylo Xyloto. You could buy prints of them which were signed limited editions and also digital prints. I wanted to know if it was still possible to get the digital prints of pictures of the band because I want to get one for my mums birthday in August. Thank you all knowing oracle!!

Q. Dear Oracle. Last year I made a trip with my sailboat named "My Own" to a small Danish island called Anholt. It was a perfect day with perfect weather, the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, and me and my boat were totally alone on the sea. Then I heard Us Against the World and it drives tears in my eyes up to this perfect moment. Did that ever happen to you by hearing a Coldplay song? Love from Germany, Beate

The Oracle replies:

I wouldn't be surprised if many people relate to this, Beate. I can't pretend that I am immune to the emotion of Coldplay songs by my close proximity to them. I have to confess that yes, that has also happened to me. There was one song I went through a patch of avoiding - which was hard as it was on the set list at the time! Other than that, two different songs on separate occasions I was just happily watching the band and they started playing and before you knew it, tears were flowing quite unexpectedly. It felt a little bit embarrassing but music has that power - whether it evokes a memory or ignites an emotion. *The idea of taking yourself off on a sailboat trip sounds idyllic by the way.

Q. Hi there, I recorded my demos and have been offered 2 gigs this summer which is amazing. I have got friends to play the parts and the first venue is Proud Camden which is an exciting venue. Did Coldplay ever play that venue, I know they did a lot of Camden shows, what about Fiddlers Elbow as that is my 2nd gig. Peace.

The Oracle replies:

There are so many venues in Camden and out of those two, Proud has the better reputation and is good to get. The band have never played there - it wasn't really used for gigs back in their day. Proud was where the band held the Kids Company charity exhibition last year. It's within part of Camden Market as is Dingwalls where they did play when they first started out and again in December 2011 for Radio 2. I used to live near the Fiddlers Elbow pub and in all my years of working in the music industry I have never been. I knew they had live music but it's not really a venue I'd consider. There are other places that are known to be on the regular Camden circuit that showcases up and coming talent such as the Barfly. However, a gig is a gig so it's not to be sniffed at. Good luck.

Q. The guys rarely ever play older songs on tour, besides Yellow. Do they go over and play some of their older material in the studio for fun or do they stop playing the songs since they are no longer part of the concerts? Have a good day.

The Oracle replies:

Following on from yesterday, they do try out old songs when choosing what to put in the set but actually, it's more likely to be at a soundcheck or rehearsal. I recall them rehearsing Such A Rush several times at Antwerp's Sportspalais production rehearsals back in 2005. Anchorman had the enviable thrill of hearing Bigger Stronger getting a run through at the Dingwalls soundcheck in 2011.

Q. Hi Oracle! I just few a simple question that I'm sure won't let me sleep at night until it's answered. I been very intrigued by Coldplay's older songs specifically from their album Parachutes and I was wondering if they still play the songs on that album or in upcoming concerts? Thanks! :)

The Oracle replies:

They've never not played Yellow on tour but apart from that they haven't played (m)any from their debut album for a long while. They have been known to perform songs from it on occasion (such as Shiver) but nothing has featured on the permanent set list.

July 8, 2013 - submitted by Nikhil, India

Q. Hey Oracle, I know that Coldplay's first name was Pectoralz. I would like to know the meaning of that word and how many instruments does Will Champion know to play? And I'm 14. Nikhil, India.

The Oracle replies:

Coldplay's first name was not Pectoralz, it was Starfish. Pectoralz was the name of a spoof band that they had as a joke. Basically they took the word pectorals (as in pectoral muscles) and changed the 's' to a 'z'. It was all done in fun and they chose that name because Pectoralz was a boy band and most boy bands at that time were all about abs and pecs. Will plays many instruments but the exact number isn't known. He started playing piano & violin at 8, guitar at 12 and drums at 21 - yes, really! As a multi-instrumentalist he also plays banjo, mandolin, tin whistle etc.

In the latest of our LP6 build-up articles, we focus on the news that Will Champion has given hope to a 2014 album release, telling Coldplayer mayurshikotra near the Bakery recently that it may be released next year. Will also said that the song 'Car Kids' had not been discounted at this stage.

mayurshikotra said on the messageboard: "Got there just before 12. There were people coming in and out of bakery and beehive. About 20 min of waiting I saw a bike come in to the bakery drive way. I looked around so see who it was and was Will. Wasn't sure if he was going into to their or beehive so waited and he came out on to the street. I asked if I could take a picture and he was very kind and took one with me and asked him to sign my AROBTTH and MX cover. I then asked how new album was coming along and he said good. And when I asked him about when they think its going to be out he said he wasn't sure but hopefully next year. He was just about to leave and I quickly asked him about Car Kids and he said it was on the back burner at the moment BUT they may rethink it soon. After that he said thanks and left."

Your latest comments from the LP6 thread from the messageboard:

Has there been any news on who will be producing lp6? I know it was said that Eno would not be involved this time. The source on that being someone who met and talked to the band at the bakery... could still change though I guess. I'm wondering if they will just keep it "in the family" and just use Rik Simpson and Dan Green. It seems like with every album the band becomes more closely knit unit / team and I really love that about them. Maybe it is time for them to let Rik Simpson step up and be the head producer on the new album. It would be easy to argue that he has earned it. Maybe Markus Dravs will be involved again if he is available. Is he working on the new Aracde Fire album still? I don't think Mumford will be back in the studio any time soon. I guess it depends on what stage Coldplay is at right now with lp6. If they are still just working on ideas or there to write then there might be time for Dravs to come in later.

Or maybe, as much as I love the Coldplay "faimily", it is time to bring in some fresh blood. Maybe a bold choice no one would expect? Like U2 working with Danger Mouse or Beady Eye working with Dave Sitek. Or a possible reunion... what is Ken Nelson doing these days anyway? Although that could be seen as a step back... Who would you like to see produce a Coldplay album? My not so bold but I think interesting choice would be Scott Litt. Coldplay loves to pay tribute to thier idols and what better way to channel a little REM then to work with the man who made some of thier best albums. Might be a good fit for what is supposed to be a "quieter" album as well. One word: Nightswimming - well, two words crammed togther anyway. Of course I would love for them to find thier "own" Scott Litt or Brian Eno - a name that will be associated with them for years to come. [thanks oldmuckers]

One thing I know I don't want: Brian Eno. Not because I think he's bad (he's not) but because they need to move on. [thanks aschall]

I've said it before, but I have always thought Coldplay would really work well if they created there own label like The Beatles did with Apple. Then, not only could they release music whenever and however they wanted, but they could also sign their own acts, which I think is something they would be very good at. Plus, it'd give them an outlet to work with said artists (Guy could produce some of their records, Chris could write them some songs, etc). [thanks Cheese Nip 2]

I would assume for now everything is very in-house, i.e. Rik Simpson and Dan Green. Will said the album might be out next year, which essentially means other producers might come in later this year to work on the material. It doesn't seem like they need to produce anything soon, so I would suspect Markus Dravs to again be involved in a smaller capacity but at a later stage, along with Davide Rossi (as a player of course) and probably Jon Hopkins, too. [thanks Miha]

But what upset me was if we remember back to parachutes, AROBTTH, X&Y they released singles with many other songs on them that did not make the album. Mylo Xyloto only released 1 song that didnt make the album, Moving to Mars... Hopefully they don't do that again.... Because as we know Mylo Xyloto was a different sound again to their previous albums. Well each one has their own sound. Parachutes with a slower take. AROBTTH a little more faster, rockier. X&Y more "spacier". VLV had a "different" sound. Just meaning the sounds were different. And then Mylo Xyloto was a more upbeat album. All different sounds. Lets blend a few? [thanks HurtsLikeHeaven42]

They will never repeat themselves like they did with the first three albums. I hope they do something different to Parachutes, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, X&Y, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, Mylo Xyloto. Different. [thanks Jonny and the cake]

I want something different too, but it's just that everytime is harder to do different things. I mean, maybe I don't want them to do exactly the same album, but if they're not gonna repeat themselves, I just prefer that the new music is similar to that era. Anyways, if we look at bands like The National for example, they do the same kind of music album by album and I like it a lot, just because they do what they know to do at their best. [thanks The Envoy]

They're working on LP6, we don't know when they will actually start to record songs though. Chris has hinted that they'd try to "go back to their roots" but we should never really trust Chris when it comes to info. Will said they might release it by the end of this year but i think it has like a 10% chance of actually happening. But it shows that at least they're really focused on LP6 right now. That's all we know. [thanks Coeurli]

I can't wait and you're absolutely right about Chris. He said the same thing for LP5 and we got MX. I like MX and I think Charlie Brown is one hell of a track but I expected something different. Oh well! Still enjoying MX as of late but I'm excited already! I hope at least the single drops 4th quarter this year! [thanks jomarr]

Random LP6 thought! I'm going to guess that the title for lp6 will be eight words long. The even numbered albums (AROBTTH and VLVODAAHF) have long titles (seven and nine words long, respectively). The odd numbered albums (parachutes , X&Y, and MX) have short titles (one, three, and two words). There's a pattern with the odd numbered albums that has the number of words start with a number, (one) then add two (three) and then subtract one, (two). So seven words plus two words is nine, and nine minus one is eight. So eight words. Sorry if that was confusing since i actually confused myself. And for the previous thought, I actually like the production on MX. It might have been a bit much, but it was still good. [thanks WarningSign42]

Q. Hi Oracle, I've been reading the MX comics upto the latest issue 5, and I'm confused about exactly how each of the songs fits into the plot line of the Mylo Xyloto comic series. The song Major Minus is obviously a reference to the antagonist, but what about the others? Up In Flames, for example? Princess of China etc. I'm not sure there is even a "China" in the fictional universe of Silencia.

The Oracle replies:

Although the character of Mylo, comic and album are intrinsically linked, they are not running alongside each other in tandem. There are themes reflected in the music but that doesn't mean that every song is represented in the comic and vice versa with characters and storylines not mentioned in the album.

Q. Dear Oracle, I just read that Adele's likeness has been debuted at M.T.'s Wax Museum in London, so I'm wondering if Coldplay is already on display, or, have they ever been approached about it? Does the museum need their permission? Happiness to all! Sandy

The Oracle replies:

Coldplay don't have waxwork effigies. As far as I am aware, anyone can be made into a waxwork and a sitting isn't always required. However, the sitting is a fascinating process.

Q. Hi Oracle! Just wondering, what was the first oracle question you answered? Thank you. xx

The Oracle replies:

The first question was sent by Rachel: Is it possible for me to make "Coldplayism" a religion as well? Worshiping this miraculous band, of course. ANSWER: Although there is technically nothing to stop someone from worshiping Coldplay, Coldplayism may be seen as a cult or parody religion. There may also be an issue of copyright with using the name. And remember, as Oasis once said unto us, "Please don't put your life in the hands of a rock n roll band".

Q. Hi Oracle, I always wondered if you're a guy or girl. Anyways, Paris did the artworks for MYLO XYLOTO right. Did he painted it all by himself or he had help? & also how many piano, guitars etc have he painted during that period? I'm guessing like alot alot. Sounds like he's half octopus. Ku, Malaysia.

The Oracle replies:

Paris did indeed have help on the mammoth task of the MX art. His girlfriend Milk worked on it with him. He roped in lots of friends for the ETIAW video. You can read more about it here. I don't know how many instruments in total were painted but possibly 3 keyboards as well as drumkit & almost all the guitars - but many of you have noticed that Guy's bass remained graffiti free. In answer to whether I am a boy or a girl - I'm neither.

Q. What are Coldplay up to at the moment? It's all a bit quiet and I missing the lovely CM lots. However I did meet Andy Murray today in Starbucks how unreal was that?! Love you all and missing you all xx

The Oracle replies:

You know, this n that... It's not been all that quiet considering they're not out and about touring and such. It's been a pretty busy week with charity appearances, the Nordoff Robbins Silver Clef Awards and general sightings (of Chris) for the keen observer. Oh I do hope Andy Murray wins Wimbledon. C'mon Andy!

Q. Did Coldplay change discography? I mean, I'm really confused because I know they have a contract with Parlophone who was owned by EMI but now is owned by Universal? I really don't understand the situation... Greetings from Argentina!

The Oracle replies:

I can understand your confusion as it was a tricky transaction because yes, you're right that EMI was sold (to Universal) but Parlophone wasn't part of the deal. Yesterday (2 July) it was confirmed that Warners completed its acquisition of Parlophone.

Q. Hi Oracle! How's your summer? In regards to all the driving questions, I was wondering can any of the guys drive? Chris said that he doesn't own a car so can he drive? Thanks in advance!!

The Oracle replies:

Good thanks - though the sun has disappeared (again) today. The driving is a hotter topic than I imagined! Chris can - and does - drive, yes. All the guys drive. Actually, come to think of it, I have never seen Jonny drive but pretty sure he can.

Q. Hi Oracle,I would like to know who's that guys who appears in Shiver video. They doesn't look like Guy, Jonny and Will, except Chris. Flavio, Mozambique.

The Oracle replies:

They look really young don't they? I know the video was made 13 years ago and the guys were only around 20 years old but I can assure you that it is Jonny, Guy & Will.

July 1, 2013 - submitted by Jake, United States of America

Q. Does any of the band members drive them selves to their gigs, or do they take a taxi or limo? I know they take trains and stuff but I saw a comment earlier you answered that said Chris takes a car sometimes. Does that mean he drives? Or does he get driven to the concerts?

The Oracle replies:

They are driven; it wouldn't be appropriate or advisable to come straight off stage all hot & sweaty with adrenalin levels at a high to drive. Chris has taken the tube to the O2 when they played there but getting a tube home wouldn't be a viable option.

Q. Hey Oracle! I'm writing a novel currently and I was wondering if I was allowed to use Coldplay's name in the story? The protagonist is listening to Coldplay during a thought-provoking ride through New York City.

The Oracle replies:

Yes, you can. However, if you were to mention the name of the Coldplay song they are listening to, you could not. The band do not own copyright to their songs so permission would be needed from Universal Publishing.

Q. Hey there! I am a huge Coldplay fan, but I am also a big fan of the Killers. I was reading about Brandon Flowers, singer for the Killers, when I read that he has performed with Coldplay before. When and where did this happen? Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

It was a benefit show at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Wednesday February 18th in aid of War Child.

June 27, 2013 - submitted by Tyler, United States of America

Q. How did the band feel about Charlie Brown being the theme song for UEFA Euro 2012? Because of this, were the band given anything? Such as premium seats to the matches?

The Oracle replies:

I'm sure they were chuffed but they don't get asked for permission for such things. There are licenses that cover the use of music in sports shows etc. The band won't therefore have been offered tickets in exchange but I'm pretty sure if they had wanted to go, they would have been able to procure tickets ;-)

June 26, 2013 - submitted by James Burke, United States of America

Q. Hello Oracle! I was wondering if when the band plays 2 shows at the same venue 2 nights in a row if there is any variation between the setlists between the two nights. Thanks, James

The Oracle replies:

I know that Bruce Springsteen & Radiohead, for example, have different set lists from show to show but their production set-up allows for such vast changes daily. Coldplay have many effects, videos and lighting that are incorporated into the concert so it’s not possible to mix it up too much. There is the occasional tweak to which songs are performed on the B & C stage.

June 26, 2013 - submitted by Regan, United Kingdom

Q. Hi there, i was just curious to know when Coldplay do shows in the UK but outside London do the guys travel together to wherever the show may be or do they travel there on there own? (For example a show in Manchester?)

The Oracle replies:

It depends on which mode of transport and where they have been previously / are off to next. For example, if they were playing T in the Park one night and Oxegen the following night, they would fly to Scotland and then leave together (by either ferry or plane) to Ireland. When they played the Crisis gigs in December back in 2010, Chris travelled up to Liverpool by car the night before to go to a gig and the rest of the band followed by train the next day. I’ve flown back from Manchester with them and on other occasions we’ve taken cars so it’s not set in stone. Generally though they fly together or share cars with whoever lives nearest to one another.

Q. Hi Oracle, Could you please tell me what Chris and Jonny were talking about at the end of the Shiver music video. I truly hope you get to read my message.

The Oracle replies:

I’m afraid I have no idea! I would wager they don’t remember either. Probably something about the video.

Q. Hey, I was listening to Zane Lowe's first play of Christmas Lights and he was describing a "pink, origami-like" packaging. Chris said, that they made only 100 of them. Can I see a photo of that awesome artwork?

The Oracle replies:

Here is what it looks like inside but outside it was just plain pink envelope style. I have seen one but don’t actually own one myself.

June 24, 2013 - submitted by Ben, United Kingdom

Q. My friend and I were at the Under 1 Roof gig in December 2011 (superb night it was too) and we're having a disagreement over Alan Partridge which I'm hoping you can settle. He is saying that Alan interrupting Coldplay during Christmas Lights wasn't planned and was very rude. And as a lifelong Alan Partridge fan (and possessing common sense) I'm saying it was obviously planned and was part of the joke. Please tell me I'm right so I can shut him up once and for all. Thanks Ben

The Oracle replies:

You're both right in a way. Steve Coogan aka Alan was due to interrupt the song yes, but not as early as he did. It wasn't his fault though, someone in the crew had told him the wrong time to go on and so it cut the song shorter than expected.

June 24, 2013 - submitted by Daire, Ireland

Q. There were no Irish concerts on the last tour, not going to lie but I'm kinda disappointed. Didn't 'Coldplay' play their first gig in Ireland at Dublin Castle?

The Oracle replies:

Although the band didn't manage to include Ireland on the full tour schedule, they did perform at Oxegen Festival there in July 2011. One of their first gigs as Coldplay was at the Dublin Castle, but not the one in Ireland. It was the less than 200 capacity pub in Camden of the same name.

Chris Martin spent the weekend taking in the sights and sounds of Glastonbury on June 30th and then performed the next day at a charity event called 'A Curious Night At The Theatre' on July 1st held at London's Apollo theatre.More discussion and photos/videos/tweets on Chris at these are here and here respectively at the Coldplay forum [thanks chommy_16, jeremyy, Tash, Wabbit, gai & wisna]At Glastonbury, according to Daily Mirror, the Rolling Stones, who headlined, booked out 10 rooms at Babington House hotel, in Somerset, and flew a string of celebrities, including Chris Martin, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker and model Kate Moss, there by helicopter. The following day, Chris performed at the A Curious Night theatre event, which was held to support an autism charity - he was a surprise guest and sang without a microphone and played acoustic versions of Paradise and Viva La Vida to finish off the evening. FrankieBazaar on Twitter wrote: "Chris Martin was brilliant #curiousnight tonight. The event also included acting performances by Dame Helen Mirren, Matt Smith, Ben Whishaw, Niamh Cusack and Andrew Scott.

Chris Martin was brilliant #curiousnight tonight. Imagine the surprise from the audience when on strolled Chris Martin with a guitar! He performed two songs - Viva la Vida and Paradise - without a microphone, during which his trousers came undone (cue anecdote about them doing the same thing when he performed with Rihanna) and the audience joined in when his voice cracked on a high note. He informed everyone that so far an enormous £83,000 had been raised, and he wanted it to reach £100,000 by the end of the evening. By the time he finished his set, he'd pledged £10,000, Jude Law matched him, and undoubtedly most of the audience were keen to reach into their pockets too if they hadn't already."The event raised over £100,000 in total, with one donation worth £6,000 for tea with Matt Smith at The Ritz. The money will go to two charities, Ambitious about Autism and The National Autistic Society. Actor Jamie Campbell Bower, 24, said he was supporting it because of his own battles with mental illness. The star of Sweeney Todd said: “I have been through depression and anxiety, it’s an ongoing battle and an uphill struggle. Acting is a difficult world to be in and I found I had to not let it over ride who I am. It’s about owning it and being okay with it and accepting it’s part of me.”Made in Chelsea star Francis Boulle said: “My older sister is actually autistic so I’m very involved with The National Autistic Society, it’s something I feel quite passionate about. Being a business owner, I know that there is so much people with autism can add if they are given the opportunity and flexibility in the work place. I don’t currently employ anyone autistic but I am seriously considering it for the future when the right person comes along.”Photos of Chris Martin at Glastonbury, Pilton, UK (June 30th):Photos of Chris Martin at 'A Curious Night' charity event in London (July 1):

Coldplay pick up Best British Act at the 2013 Silver Clef Awards - review/photos/tweets

As expected, on Friday night Coldplay received the Best British Act at this year’s Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards in London (28th June). Chris and Jonny were present to collect Coldplay's award, and they were also nominated for the Best Live Act award. More discussion, photos and tweets on the awards is at the Coldplay forum now [thanks Tash]Ex-Verve bandmembers Nick McCabe and Simon Jones presented Chris and Jonny with their Best British Act award. Chris said on stage: "We’re so thrilled to receive this from you. Why aren’t you still in The Verve? We’re so psyched to be on stage with two legends."Others award winners included Vampire Weekend, Jessie Ware, The Kinks' Ray Davies, One Direction, The Bee Gees' Barry Gibb, Labrinth, Alison Moyet and classical performer Alison Balsom. The Clash picked up The Silver Clef Award (for outstanding contribution to UK music). The award, which is the main prize of the entire event, has previously been won by legendary British musicians including Queen, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, as well as some more unlikely choices such as M People and Dido. The star-studded annual event, which is now in its 38th year, raised a total of £480,000 at the ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Nordoff Robbins provide over 50,000 music therapy sessions annually, visiting community establishments such as schools, day centres, hospitals and care homes, in addition to the work done at their main centre and units.Bee Gees star Barry Gibb had said earlier that he would like to collaborate with Chris Martin. The legendary songwriter - who was honoured with the 'Lifetime Achievement' label at tonight's ceremony - has been responsible for a number one hits in all decades spanning between the 1960s and 2000s. Asked who he would like to write a chart-topping hit with in today's music industry to continue the run, Gibb told Digital Spy ahead of the awards: "It could be Chris Martin, but it might be Paul McCartney. You never know when your roads are going to cross. I have a communication with Paul - I'm going to do a seminar at the Liverpool Performing Arts on songwriting. That's what life does. You gravitate towards one another and either something happens or it doesn't."Latest tweets:

This @coldplay signed guitar is up for auctioned later & Chris Martin will be here to collect an Award #O2SilverClefs pic.twitter.com/T2ikEFBi1L
— Nordoff Robbins UK (@NordoffRobbins1) June 28, 2013

Best British act just presented to the incredible Coldplay.
Coldplay are the highest ranked Brits on an annual global Forbes celebrity power list, reports the Independent among many media sources today. Coldplay are ranked at number 14 in the newly published Forbes list of the world's most powerful celebrities, three places above X Factor supremo Simon Cowell.

Coldplay did not make the list at all last year and last featured in 2010 when they were ranked at number 35. Oprah Winfrey returns to the top of the list for the first time in three years, with last year's chart-topper Jennifer Lopez plunging down to number 12. Top-selling singer Adele plummets from the top 100 entirely. Adele made her debut in the Forbes list - based on money and fame - in 2012 at 24, but she has dropped straight out this year.

On Coldplay, the KROQ website added: While Coldplay’s enormously successful world tour in support of the band’s most recent full-length, Mylo Xyloto, is credited as driving the band’s ascension up the Forbes’ power chart (the tour is cited as generating more than $3 million per show), the group’s celebrity associations are also a factor. Chris Martin’s wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, lands at No. 71 on the overall celebrity list, with the couple’s friendship with Beyonce and her husband, Jay-Z (he’s No. 32 on the list) also helped propel Coldplay to the No. 9 position, just ahead of pop star Katy Perry at No. 10.

Chris Martin was mobbed by a group of photo opportunists when he took a break from recent album recording sessions to attend the Hoping Foundation at Café de Paris, London on Thursday (20th June). Chris was at the fundraiser along with fellow celebrities Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, Stella McCartney, Hugh Grant, Noel Gallagher, Jemima Khan and Jessie Metcalfe. But there’s no doubt about – that really is Chris Martin and yes, he really is flashing his pearly whites! And in public too! What are the chances? The Coldplay frontman is notoriously private and is never too happy when confronted with a camera, especially when he’s out and about, so to see him with a smile on his face while out on the street is a rarity. The 36-year-old was leaving the Hoping Foundation event at the Café de Paris where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Kate Moss, Noel Gallagher, Florence Welch, Hugh Grant and Stella McCartney.

And he’d clearly had a great night because not only was there a smile on his face and a spring in his step, but he was more than happy to stop to chat to the fans and be in their photograph, and absolutely laughed his head off as camera phones flashed around him. One fella, who clearly couldn’t believe he was standing next to the Viva La Vida star and put his arm around him like he was his new best mate – a few minutes more and he could well have been!"

Q. Dear Oracle, I was wondering how you would acquire a job like yours. I mean, you said before you went to concerts before you knew them, obviously stating that you didn't know them in college. I am not asking you to tell me all about this either, but you must do something else rather that only answer 2 Oracle questions a day, right? How could someone like me, get into a relationship, with any band, and start working with them, being with them a lot, like you do at the bakery. Thank you for considering your time.

The Oracle replies:

I didn’t actually say many of those things: I didn’t go to their concerts before I met them. I did know them when they were at college. I don’t work at the Bakery and am not therefore with the band a lot. Now I’ve set that straight I think it’s irrelevant to say what else I spend my time doing. Suffice it to say, I do other things, yes. The second part of your message is the most interesting... I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but it’s important to differentiate between working with a band because it’s your job and hanging out with them because you’re a fan. I don’t know enough about you to guide you fully but there are plenty of ways to get into the music industry and the many specific areas within it. These days there are many specialized courses but there were none when I started so I had to work my way up from working for free and a pittance just to get experience. If you choose that route, local venues or rehearsal studios are a great place to start. Helping bands load in and out for shows too but they will probably already have their mates doing that before they progress to roadies. What you do will depend on what you would like as a career. If you see a new band with potential you could help out with promotion, marketing, getting them gigs and helping with their online presence. Many record labels have internships so visit their websites for more details. There are books and articles published on the web so once you have chosen the area you are interested in, go forth and research – that’s what I did. There was a book written a few years ago, How To Make it in the Music Business, Sian Pattenden and the great thing about it was it gave an overview of what money you’d expect to earn, how many hours you’d be working, pressure rating, travel rating and glamour rating (amongst others). If there’s a revised edition, I’d suggest having a quick peruse of that before deciding if it’s for you.

Q. Hi Oracle, Can you tell me who is that guy working as the main Coldplay soundman and testing mics and everything on the MX tour? He didn't quite look like Dan Green. Who is he? And why not Dan Green this time. Thanks.

The Oracle replies:

Dan Green is the FOH (front of house) sound engineer so he's not on the stage testing mics etc. It may surprise you to learn there is a Monitor Engineer (& assistant) as well as a Sound Crew of 6. Dan Green has a FOH assistant too.

Q. Oracle hello! What is your happiest memory with Coldplay? Thanks.

The Oracle replies:

Gosh there are so many that it would be hard to choose one. From the early days I'd say Parachutes going to #1 and hearing their name read out winning their first Brit Award. Since then the happiest moments are usually on tour.

Q. Hola, Hallo, Hello Oracle! I know this is one of the most stupid questions ever, but I have curiosity to know.. Where does Chris gets his haircut? I love it! I know I'm a girl, but maybe I go on a trip to London and I decide to get a haircut, and then when I have my amazing haircut I will say I got it where Chris Martin goes! Hahahaha. Please reply, even if you don't know! Greetings and Cheers from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! Ps: I'm very glad Chris Martin's Mylo Xyloto hairstyle came back, he looks so hot in it! Take Care Oracle.

The Oracle replies:

I prefer the long hair look too - he usually grows it after a tour. Anyway, as far as I am aware, his hairdresser - I have totally forgotten her name - comes to the studio and cuts his hair there. I don't think she works in a salon...

Q. Hey Oracle! In the Roadie entry #175, it mentioned Oldlay quite a lot. What exactly is Oldlay? Is it a spinoff of Coldplay? Thanks, Jacob

The Oracle replies:

In Roadie #42's blog he explains that "For many years, there has been a “crew band” comprised mainly of the backline department, but filled out by anyone who fancies getting involved. Robyn’s tour manager it seems, is none other than Ali McMordie, from seminal punk heroes Stiff Little Fingers. He’s taken the bass spot on the stage and I arrive on the arena floor just as they finish a rousing cover of Anarchy In The UK". Oldplay are the crew band. They jam for fun at sound checks.

Q. Hi Oracle! This is Catalina and Carla. We wanted to know the kind of stuff Coldplay does while they are on their tourbus. Do they play scrabble, have pillow fights, watch a good movie, or just practice their music? Just wondering. Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

The band don't actually have a tourbus and that's not how they travel to gigs but... they read, listen to music and chat en route.

Q. Hey Oracle! Can you please tell me what Chris said about Dads in this video? Happy Father's Day!

The Oracle replies:

After saying "this song is for Jonny Cash (who once stood on this stage himself)" - who 'Til Kingdom Come was written for - he says "this is for my dad also. In fact all the dads in the world. Even Gay Dad* who played here some years ago. And the guy from My Two Dads+"... * Gay Dad were a British band who started around the same time as Coldplay but split up in 2002. + My Two Dads was an American sitcom in the late 80s.

Q. Hey Oracle, This may seem like a random question, but I hope you can answer it. You've talked before about making covers of songs (specifically Coldplay songs) But what are the rules when it comes to covering/performing or even recording an unreleased song? For example, I'm a huge fan of a song called Until the Water Flows Over (I suppose it's also known as Solid Ground) that was never released (why it wasn't, I don't think I'll ever understand). It was played live once, I believe. And the instrumental leaked online some time ago. With what we have of the song, could I be able to cover/perform or record a variation of this song without any problems? If not, what could I do about it? Thanks Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

Rules for cover versions aren't the exact same in every territory but generally speaking you can cover anything but you can't record a song that hasn't been recorded by the originators. Playing it live is also tricky because unreleased songs aren't registered and therefore royalties and monies earned from live performance wouldn't reach the writers. A song in existence whether recorded or not is still copyrighted to the publisher/label/artist...

The Oracle replies:

That globe was bought back in 1999 so I doubt that the globes they stock now - of which there are many - are the exact same model as the Parachutes cover. I think you're better just buying the one you like that fits your budget...

Q. Dear Oracle, My relationship with my boyfriend is starting to fall apart. We hardly talk any more and we used to be really close. Now whenever we have a conversation, everything is boring and awkward, and now I'm starting to become afraid of talking to him at all. It hard for us to even see each other because we live so far away. Please help me, I don't want to lose him... Best wishes, Julia

The Oracle replies:

Julia it sounds like you are desperately clinging to what the relationship was and what you want it to be again. I can understand that but sometimes you have to accept the change may mean the end :-( I will assume you have tried talking to him. If you haven't that is the first thing you must do. Because of the distance, perhaps you could Skype and encourage him to tell you how he feels - rather than demand explanations - for the change in behaviour. It could be that he's going through some personal issues that are affecting your relationship, maybe he's struggling with the distance or it could be - and I am sorry to be blunt - that he doesn't want to be in the relationship any longer and does not know how to tell you. I want to direct your attention to how you described the current state of your relationship by removing the superfluous and concentrating on the nitty gritty: My relationship with my boyfriend is starting to fall apart. We hardly talk any more. We used to be really close. Whenever we have a conversation, everything is boring and awkward. I'm starting to become afraid of talking to him at all. Now, I know you love him but I have to say, this doesn't sound like much of a relationship and certainly not one worth staying in or trying to save. Perhaps only you know that but all I will say is, break-ups are rotten and they hurt (not like heaven) but... sometimes they are necessary. Being happy is the main thing and at the moment it doesn't sound like either of you are so maybe a break is the way forward and see what happens from there. Don't worry though, whatever happens, you're not alone!

Q. Hi Oracle, I wanna get started with getting a little fitter... Any suggestions for a running-playlist (first of all Coldplay songs but also non-Coldplay-songs) ?? Which tracks do the boys listen to while working out? Have a jolly day :) Thanks for answering!

The Oracle replies:

There are lots of CDs and Spotify playlists etc. for exercise these days but I like to create my own so I may be able to help - not that I run often. I'll start with Coldplay songs. No surprise to regular readers that my first song would be my favourite; Politik. Great pounding opening to get the heart rate pumping but the dips and crescendos will set a good pace. In no particular order I'd definitely include ETIAW, Talk, Lost, Charlie Brown, Daylight, Cemeteries of London, Strawberry Swing and Major Minus. Clocks & Speed of Sound fit, but they wouldn't be for me - personally. To begin the cool down I'd opt for a slower song such as Everything's Not Lost - otherwise it would be a very Parachutes album free zone! Paradise is good winding down song too. That would be quite a long run though, so make sure you pace yourself or build up to it gradually. I'd advise alternating between running for 2 minutes and walking for 2 minutes. Here's a list of some of the songs (again in no particular order of pop & rock) that I used to jog around to: Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name; Jay Z - 99 Problems; Faith No More - Be Aggressive; Audioslave - Cochise; Black Eyed Peas - Rock Your Body; Max Sedgley - Happy; The Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution; Dizzy Rascal - Bonkers; That's probably around 25-30 minutes so plenty to be getting on with.

You've inspired me to run again, Veronika... I'm afraid I don't know what they guys listen to whilst working out - they don't always have music though.

Q. Which was the first concert that Coldplay used Xylobands/wristbands first time? Thank you.

The Oracle replies:

It was actually the show that I mentioned in one of yesterday's answers. That was the first live gig of the MX album era though not strictly part of a tour. It took place in Madrid's Plaza de toros Las Ventas on 26 October 2011. They looked different - thinner straps and less colours but the technology was the same. Anchorman and myself went to have a look at the boxes of Xylobands waiting for the very first fans to enter the venue. It was both exciting and nerve inducing waiting for the moment of truth when the lights went down. The concert was part of the “American Express Unstaged” series, which paired musical artists with film directors. Coldplay worked with Anton Corbijn who as you may know, has taken photographs of the band and directed the videos for Talk and Viva la Vida (alternative video).

Indeed it was. Chris performed (with Davide Rossi) last Thursday (6 June) in London at a private charity dinner in support of the Ecology Trust and the Aspinall Foundation. Q. Dear Coldplay, We have just bought the Coldplay Live 2012 Concert film. It is an amazing film, that brings back some wonderful memories. We only went puzzled when you say that you started the tour on Madrid. Did you forgot the extraordinary concert that you did in Oporto on the 18 May?? Cheers, Paulo and Cristina.

The Oracle replies:

The Madrid show mentioned in the Live 2012 is not the one you're thinking of. The first live gig of the MX era was in Madrid on 26 October 2011. They played there again on 20 May 2012 as part of the full tour. Once the album was released there were TV, Radio, charity and special perfomances before the tour kicked off proper on 3rd December in Glasgow. Portugal was around the 22nd night of the tour.

Chris also confirmed that they were very much into 'new' songs. I asked fresh/ raw tracks? He said no...just new. With a bit of luck the new album isn't as far off as we once thought. They were 'mid-song' between the beehive and the bakery, with a host of activity going on - from laptops being passed studio to studio..as well as laundry! It was a great experience and one I shall never forget. They say you should never meet your heroes, but with Chris it was a genuine pleasure..."

ColdplaySheffield added: "I asked Will how new material was coming on and he said 'it's coming on very good.' I asked him when he reckons the next time they might be touring and he said 'we need to record some new material first and then we will.' I also asked Will if we can expect any releases or when LP6 might be coming out and he replied "maybe at the end of this year, but we're not sure yet." When he said maybe the end of this year I couldn't believe it! My friend asked Chris what his favourite Coldplay song was and Chris replied "the one we're recording now!" I know it was unlikely he'd answer that question but it was a brilliant, witty answer I must say!"

Q. Hey Oracle, I watched Coldplay's performance for the "Stand Up To Cancer" benefit and it got me thinking, how do international concerts work? Is it just assumed that enough people know English, or is there a form of translations (captions, interpreter) that ensue? I wish I could've been in France that night! Best, Flora

The Oracle replies:

I'd say the fact that people come to the shows means they're fans of the music. They will only have heard the songs in English as that's the native tongue of the band so naturally that's what they write in.

Certainly not all people know the meaning of the lyrics. To some that won't matter at all. I like songs in foreign languages that I've NO clue what they're saying or what it means. I can tell it it's an emotional heartbreaker or whatever but it doesn't deter my enjoyment of the music. Of course English as a language is widely recognised & understood and many artists perform in English so there are no captions, interpreters or sur-titles like at some opera shows.

The Oracle replies:

Prospekt was as real as Anchorman, Roadie #42 and myself. There's no fictional story a la Mylo though.

Q. Dear Oracle, As I'm sure many coldplayers have, I have just listened through Mylo Xyloto in order and it made me wonder, when producing an album, do they write/record/produce the songs in order or do they do them separately then slot them in? Thanks in advance Oracle! :) x

The Oracle replies:

I'm not sure how many others have wondered the same but you're the first to ask, Ben. They don't write, record or produce the songs sequentially. The tracklisting is a vital part of the decision making but an album isn't in order of which songs were written first. Obviously when they're at the demo stage, they will record a song as it's born to get it down but that has no bearing on a finished album.

The Oracle replies:

Me - Oracle - and Anchorman are two separate people and we've both been to countless Coldplay shows. We both love the band. Personally I couldn't do this if I didn't. I have no idea how many times I have seen the band over the past 15 years but it must be over a hundred. My favourite song is usually Politik. Q. After a pretty turbulent flight last week that had me yelping, I was wondering, does anyone in the Coldplay family get the flight jitters? If yes, then I'd love to know how they deal with it. I hope I'm not the only plane-o-phobe (if that's what you can call it!).

The Oracle replies:

They're all so used to flying that they're not phased by it at all but obviously after taking so many flights, there are some scary moments. One I witnessed - en route to Palm Springs. It was a very small plane and pretty terrifying turbulence. I can't imagine it was quite as scary as a flight Chris experienced when he was close to landing in Ghana.

The Oracle replies:

Ooh look! 2 Celines in one day from different corners of the world. Chris did record Dry Your Eyes with The Streets but the reason it was never released has nothing to do with how Chris' voice sounded. It sounded great! I prefer it to the released version personally. Sometimes labels have objections to collaborations - nothing too political or sinister just varying reasons to do with exposure, schedules, other releases etc. It's more a question for the The Streets label rather than Coldplay's...

What a great thing to do! Write down what is going on in your life now; thoughts, feelings, experiences, likes/dislikes, hopes/fears - that kind of thing. It will be interesting to also write down where you see yourself in 5 years time and what you would like to have achieved by then. It will be interesting in 5 years time to see whether your life panned out how you expected or took a totally different turn and maybe even a better direction that you thought or hoped for. I might write one for myself!

Q. I just finished watching Game of Thrones season 3 episode 9, and I am 99% sure that I saw Will Champion playing a drum in the band! Was that him or was I just imagining things?

The Oracle replies:

Yes! After all the months of speculation about which episode he was going to appear in (we have talked about this here before), the episode featuring Will finally aired last night (June 2nd).

Q. Hi I was at the Manchester concert and Chris kept saying Ashley Grey. Who is he or she? Thx.

The Oracle replies:

Can you believe that's a year ago next week? Wow, how the time has flown by! There is no Ashley Grey. He wasn't saying Ash are great either. Chris was channelling his inner rapper saying "that sh*t cray". I assume that cray means crazy but then I am more suburbs rather than urban...

Q. I recently saw on twitter that one of their fans tweeted that Guy was on Pointless Celebrities, is that true?

The Oracle replies:

No. For those who don't know, Pointless is a quiz show where you're trying to find answers that the public are least likely to have replied when polled. This week one of the categories was Famous Bass Guitarists. There followed a list of bass players and the contestants had to say which bassist played with which band. They were trying to get a pointless answer - one which returned 0 correct replies. Guy Berryman's name was one of the answers but none of the contestants chose his to guess. After the round had finished, Alexander Armstrong - the host - wrongly guessed he was in Keane. The interesting part of this is Richard Osman, who is a side-kick to Alexander, is the brother of a famous bass guitarist himself - Mat Osman from Suede.

Q. Hi Oracle, I recently signed up for the Global Citizen and in doing so I found this and the first part of the stop malaria film clip, sounded like the beat off of Lost! I was wondering if they had/needed permission to do that. And is there anyway that Coldplay may support the Global Citizen and that's why the sounds of Lost! are in the video. I know it's not Lost!, but it's similar. Thanks Oracle!

The Oracle replies:

The band aren't associated with Global Citizen, the reason it sounds similar is because it's a sample of Lost! The track is Better by K'Naan and I'm sure he got permission because it's illegal not to have. There is a Coldplay reference if you listen to the song in its entirety...

Q. Who is Claire Smith? I've been going through a 1999 version of Coldplay.com and it said that comments/suggestions and questions about Coldplay should be emailed to Claire Smith. Are you Claire Smith?

The Oracle replies:

No, I'm not - never have been - Claire Smith. Claire made her own unofficial fan site dedicated to the band. I don't know why it would show up on a search through archived Coldplay.com apart from Claire linking to our site from hers - when both incarnations were active. Before Coldplay.com we had Coldplay.org which was a far cry from the site we have today. They've come a long way, baby!

Q. I have noticed that on every album, the band has a secret track except for Mylo Xyloto. Also, the other albums have a song that's significantly shorter than the others, but but on Mylo Xyloto, there are three shorter songs. Why is this so? Thanks, and I'm already waiting for the next album!

The Oracle replies:

There is no rhyme or reason - songs are as long as they are. Album length is more important as the band don't like their LPs to be er, too long playing (which is what LP stands for). A Rush of Blood to the Head didn't have any hidden tracks either.

Q. Hey Oracle, So Mat Whitecross recently joined twitter and he replied to one of the fans saying that Coldplay are doing a dubstep remix of The Scientist. Is it really true? Thanks a ton! Saakshi

The Oracle replies:

Like most of the Coldplay posse, Mat has a great sense of humour. There is no truth in this - the tweet is a joke.

Q. Now having Coldplay Live 2012 in my hands I realized that in the back Violet Hill has an * and the other song no and when I imported the songs to iTunes Violet Hill didn't appear. It is a problem with my CD or every CD have this problem? And why Violet Hill has the *? Love you hope you reply me and I will be so thanksfull. Love you.

The Oracle replies:

Live 2012 is a DVD film with CD. The asterisk (*) next to Violet Hill denotes the song is on the DVD only. That means as it isn't on the CD, there is no Violet Hill to import to your iTunes library.

Chris Martin performed at The Ormeley Dinner held at Bridgewater House, St James, London on Thursday 6th June. More on this occasion, including photos and videos are at the Coldplay forum here onwards [thanks soss, wabbit, Tash, LdySpace, patmol, the_escapist]

Organised and hosted by Damian Aspinall, Zac Goldsmith and Trudie Styler, the event which was attended by numerous celebrities was looking to double the £2.8 million raised by the last two dinners. It’s no surprise Chris performed at the annual event as it is one of Europe’s most important environmental and conservation charity dinners, which is a cause close to the singer's heart.

It is a private dinner in support of the Ecology Trust and the Aspinall Foundation at Ormeley Lodge. The Ecology Trust distributes funds to frontline and unsung organizations battling to protect the environment, both domestically and globally. Whereby the Aspinall Foundation is a charity that sets out to protect threatened species such as elephant, rhino, cheetah, chimpanzee, mountain gorilla, African wild dog, and marine species such as the sea turtle.

Also in attendance were Greek royals Crown Prince Pavlos and his wife Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, while the guest of honour was Prince Charles.

Chris’s performance no doubt went down very well which is why he decided to celebrate with a 'rare night on the town', according to the Daily Mail yesterday. We reckon he went straight home!

Q. My brother and I are convinced that Talk was a credits song in a movie. Specifically, we thought it closed out one of the Transformer movies, but after reviewing the dvds that is not the case. Was it in the select pre-release movie theater version of Transformers or in a different movie? 'We are lost and incomplete' without this information. Thanks.

The Oracle replies:

Talk definitely didn't appear in any of the Transformer movies but then I don't recall it being used either in any film or as the credits rolled. I wonder if perhaps it has been used in a trailer much like Paradise was used in previews for Life of Pi but not actually featured in the film...

Q. Hello Oracle! If you really have nothing to do now, would you like to answer my question? Yesterday I was listening to the radio, when I heard an awesome, unexpected samba-remix of Clocks! Could you tell me who did it and if it was a direct collaboration with the guys or an independent thing?? Thank you very much, and ciao from Italy!

The Oracle replies:

The version is by Rhythms del Mundo. It was totally separate and nothing to do with the band directly.

Q. Hello Oracle, did Chris have anyone in particular on his mind while writing Shiver? Sort of going through the same thing right at this moment. Do you reckon I should move on or keep trying?

The Oracle replies:

Yes he did. I think the only way to answer this question is to imagine your best mate has asked you the same. What would you advise them to do? Sometimes when it's happening to you, you're too close to see what the right thing to do is. I personally think you know in your gut whether you're wasting your time. Life's too short for both losing a love that could be and wasting time on a love that will never be.

Q. Hi Oracle, I had seen a live performance of God Put a Smile Upon your Face (2006) and Chris said: "This is a song about what it feels like to be the biggest band in the world in the biggest city in the world".

It is really about that?

The Oracle replies:

I wasn't aware of that, no and I doubt he was being serious. I remember at the time the album came out Chris said: "That came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce. We were really getting into things like P.J Harvey and Muse - things with a bit more energy."

Q. Lovely Oracle, since Coldplay's first message in Spanish appear on Facebook, and some people here asking in Spanish... I was wondering, have you ever thought about learning spanish? But I mean, really, Spanish without translator help! There is a lot of people here asking in English, but their mother language are others, (like me! I'm Chilean) So why can't you? Cheers, Arie.

The Oracle replies:

As the band are British - like you - it's usual for us to speak in our mother tongue. That said, we are obviously looking into having Spanish translations - as you saw on Facebook. I did study languages at school - French, Spanish & German and am at the moment learning a little Italian, but I'm not fluent enough to offer to reply in any other languages. Plus not all our readers would understand. English is practically the universal language (after love), well, it is the most widely used so it makes sense for us to stick with it.

May 21, 2013 - submitted by S, Netherlands

Q. Hi Oracle! I hope you, the rest of the crew and the band are doing really well. I have two questions, and I'm hoping you could answer them for me: 1. On Amsterdam, is it Will or Jonny providing the backing vocals? I know that Will provides the most backing vocals, and that Jonny doesn't always like to sing... But the backing vocals in Amsterdam are quite low, and when Jonny sings, he has a very distinct low voice.

I've asked some fans, and most are really convinced it's Will (singing low), but... I'm just not sure. 2. Why is the small Mylo Xyloto title on the Mylo Xyloto CD case printed upside down? I noticed it when I wanted to arrange all of my Coldplay CDs into a neat stack. First I thought it was a printing mistake, but then I mentioned it to other fans and their MX CDs have the exact same thing. Is it a mistake? Or is it just a choice in design? Thanks so much for reading these questions and helping out so many Coldplayers! And, if you answer these ones (or one of them), thanks in advance for that too! Love, S.

The Oracle replies:

Will sings the bvs on Amsterdam live but on the album version I can hear more than one back-up vocal. I can hear Jonny (low) and Will (higher & same as live) and am pretty sure I can hear Chris (over dubs) too.

I'm not sure where you heard Jonny doesn't like to sing much. Jonny sang most of the backing vocals before AROBTTH. You can hear him clearly take lead on the second verse of Don't Panic on Parachutes too. I have a quite a few other albums where when the title spine is facing the right way, it means the CD is upside down on my shelf: Primal Scream - Screamadelica, Ben Christophers - My Beautiful Demon, Cocteau Twins - Victorialand & Associates - Silk to name a few. Who knows why... maybe the creators were left handed.

May 20, 2013 - submitted by Josh, United Kingdom

Q. Dear Oracle, I have no faith that this ridiculous question will be answered but here we go. The band's previous name was Trombolese for a short period.. Freed from Desire just came on shuffle, and it sounds very much like they keep saying Trombolese! Plus this was released in 1996... could this have been the inspiration behind Coldplay's early (and terrible) band name!? Thanks! Josh

The Oracle replies:

Ha ha ha! Josh I swear that I thought the exact same thing. Before I met Coldplay I thought they said trombolese in the lyrics to that song. I had no idea what trombolese meant of course - that's because the lyrics are actually "he's got his strong beliefs". It seems we weren't alone in thinking that by the way.

The timing would suggest there could be a link as it was only a short time before Coldplay formed. To be honest if like me they thought it was an exotic music instrument, I can see why they would chose that as their early (and terrible) band name.

Q. Hi Oracle!, I found this cover of Life Is For Living and I swear this man sounds almost identical to Chris! What do you think?

The Oracle replies:

If they ever bring back Stars In Their Eyes*, this guy has to mimic Chris. That is uncanny. I would have thought it was Chris if not for the odd phrasing and pronunciation. He could have a great career as a tribute act. *There was another Neil Diamond impersonator on the show who was brilliant - Gary Ryan.

Q. Dear Oracle... there's an open mic in my town and I'm wondering if I should perform. I have a song I can play but I'm scared of being judged or messing up! What do I do? Should I do it?

The Oracle replies:

It's good to push & challenge yourself. There's nothing wrong with making a mistake either so don't let that put you off. So what if you mess up? Just carry on as if nothing went wrong. Ok, I know Chris usually stops and starts again if he's messed up but whatever you'd be happier with. You could make a joke out of it. This is hypothetical of course because you may not make any mistakes. There are times we are judged by others but hopefully everyone will be willing you to do well. Take some close friends to support & cheer you on. If you learn the song well, you can only do your best. You're bound to feel nervous but that's natural. Once you've performed you'll probably feel an incredible buzz but that doesn't mean the nerves will go the next time. I think nerves are good - it shows you care. Go for it!

Q. What did the hypnotised on the 24th of December have to do with Coldplay?

The Oracle replies:

You mean the hypnofeed. The hypnofeeds aren't meant to be related to Coldplay. They are random and actually we don't really want any clips linked to the band. The 24th of December - Christmas Eve - was chosen because it was from The Nutcracker which is a famous ballet based around Christmas. I'll take this opportunity to say if you see anything weird / wonderful / sinister / interesting (under 7 minutes) on the Internet, please do submit it.

May 16, 2013 - submitted by Nick, United States of America

Q. Dear Oracle, I can only imagine the countless number of marriage proposal requests the band must get for each show. Up until recently, I always thought a concert was a strange place for a proposal. Then I saw a proposal during Fix You, which sent shivers down my spine. Do you think a concert is an admirable place for a man to propose, or is it unromantic because it requires little work?

The Oracle replies:

I was considering trying to find out how many proposals have taken place at a Coldplay show. You're right - there are so many requests asking for the band's help to make it special. It's not possible to grant such requests - there'd be little time for he music! Add to that number the people who don't ask and then the ones that get swept up in the moment and ask spontaneously, I reckon there are scores at every show. Each to their own I say. It's not for me personally but hey, if that's how & where someone wants to propose, that's their business. I wouldn't do it because, well, I'd be thinking they're hardly likely to say "no" are they? It would totally ruin the show.

Q. Hi Oracle! :) So I was looking around on iTunes and I found this. It's by a band called Mylo Xyloto, and it was released before Coldplay's album Mylo Xyloto was released. There is also an album by that band. I was just wondering if this has anything to do with Coldplay. Thanks so much! :) -- Becca

Strange that there is no artwork, no information and no band photo. This has nothing to do with Coldplay at all and I urge you not to buy that single (1'03!) or album as I suspect it's not going to be what you think. Firstly Mylo Xyloto didn't exist until the band came up with the name. Mylo may be a familiar name but Xyloto is original. Secondly, the "artist" could have changed the details after MX came out but I assure you, that it is not legitimate at all. They have a page on another site and the "album" is dodgy live recordings and video clips. Stay well clear and I'll investigate further.

Q. I am in a band but they don't share same musical interest. They all love The Strokes, The Smiths etc. Although they are great bands they don't get me going like Coldplay, Mumford and Sons and early Radiohead. I am the songwriter yet don't want to put effort into songs if they don't like them because they are Coldplay inspired and not 'indie' enough. What do I do?? Go solo and get session musicians? I am 16 by the way.

The Oracle replies:

I want you to ask yourself why you and these fellow musicians are in this band - how did it come about? There must have been a shared interest to start the band in the first place. Usually a band come together because they share a passion in music - not always the same types of music but it's more than common for that to be the case. The differences in taste could help shape your band into something very unique. It's all very well being inspired by a band as long as it's not sounding like them. Originality is very important these days so maybe you should all be encouraged to listen to each others' favourite bands and share thoughts, ideas and suggestions. You should put effort into your songs no matter who they are for; band mates, friends, audience... However, if the band members don't like the songs you're writing, you need a new band. Going solo is one thing, getting session musicians is another - a very expensive other too. I suggest you either work things out with your band to make a sound for yourselves that draws on all your influences or go solo and perform as a singer-songwriter acoustically until you find like minded people you want to make music with. Good luck.

Q. Quick question: I've noticed that Chris Martin had an = sign on his hand during a concert or something (not sure since it was just a random photo on Bing), and I was wondering whether or not he meant it to be an HRC/LGBT(Q) supportive thing or JUST a thing (like, "Hey, I'm putting this equal sign for balance of the body and mind..."). Crazy curious, and I would appreciate an answer *squeal* It would be epic if you guys (or at least Mr. Martin), supported HRC.

The Oracle replies:

The official logo of the HRC is the equal sign (yellow on blue) and has been around since 1995. In 2002, Chris adopted a different equal sign for the band's involvement in Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign (green on white). I've not discussed HRC with the guys but knowing them as well as I do, I feel I can say they are in support of the Human Rights Campaign.

Q. Can I ask please about your cool website, who done it? What software is it? Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Slender Fungus are the creative types behind the, er, type. I have no idea what software they use. All I could gather is that they need "... really fast and expensive computers (Mac and PC), really good software, a decent connection..."

Q. Hello Oracle! I was reading Roadie #42's blogs and I came across the word "tympani". I was just wondering if this is a word made up by Coldplay and staff (like Xylobands) or is it a typo for the word "timpani"? Thank you!

The Oracle replies:

Tympani is a legitimate alternative spelling for timpani; I prefer the latter to be honest.

Q. Hello Oracle, I'd like to firstly say I saw the guys live on their MX tour and absolutely loved it and I love watching videos of them play at different gigs on the tour. But I stumbled across a Live In Madrid EP containing Violet Hill, GPASUYF, Paradise, Charlie Brown & Clocks. Is this official or not?

Thanks!

This was a U.S only item as part of Google's download store launch. It looks like it's now available in the U.K.

Q. Dear Oracle, I'd like to send some watercolor paintings inspired by Coldplay's songs to Chris Martin. Can you please give me an extremely secure address where I can do so, they are original works of mine and if I lose them they're gone. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. God bless you. Giant teddy bear hugs. Gael.

The Oracle replies:

Please, please don't attempt to send anything valuable in the post; we do not have the facilities to accept any items and cannot guarantee their safety. If you'd like to scan your pictures and submit them to our Hypnofeed section, they will be seen and who knows, maybe selected so that everyone can see them on the site.

Q. So I went to see Athlete on Friday for their 10 year anniversary of Vehicles and Animals, and it was great. And although they may not be as successful as Coldplay, would the band ever consider say a 15 year anniversary of Parachutes, not necessarily a tour but a few one of small gigs. It would be hugely appreciated I'm sure, plus you can't deny that this is not only the greatest song in the world, but must be the best song played live!?

The Oracle replies:

Thank you for the reminder of this wonderful version of Spies. It was a firm favourite of mine since I very first heard it. Anchorman went to see the Athlete anniversary show too and loved it. I'm not sure there would be anything like a 15th year anniversary of Parachutes but it would be nice to celebrate in some way. Maybe we could have a party of our own?
