It was Sunday 5th May and after playing a more compact setlist at the earlier 5PM show, the band were ready to arrive on stage at the planned time of 10PM Eastern time. for the 'big one'. The boys wasted no time and started off with Always in My Head, a song that seemed made for these sort of venues. As missing_an_eyebrow pointed out on reddit, all of the classics have been slightly revamped for the Ghost Stories tour to give them more of an understated and mellow feel such as Fix you which Chris Martin played for Mick Jagger who recently sang at the funeral of partner, L'Wren Scott who had taken her own life in March. Other highlights of the wonderful evening included God Put a Smile Upon Your Face which if you were wandering, starts off in old school style to how the studio version sounds then turns into the rock behemoth at the end we became so used to during the Mylo Xyloto tour. Not sure whether there was any guitar smashing this time though! Another's Arms sounded as haunting as ever and with a slightly more mellow touch than previous performances. Chris had his usual funny chat with the fans in between the former two tracks, talking about places to visit in New York :

Til Kingdom Come proceeded the show to which Chris expressed his sorrow of Johnny Cash passing away since the track was originally written and ready to record before we passed away and dedicated as for each live performance of the sincere hidden track off X&Y to the late legend of music.

The final part of the show was finished off by the atmospheric Oceans, the magnificently energetic A Sky Full of Stars which must of been very hard remaining seated in the theater at that point! And finishing off with the first live performance of Life is For Living since 2011.

That was not all though. The band appeared back on stage to which Chris Martin asked the audience not to film and upload to Youtube (the radio broadcast had ended as in Germany)  as he previously insisted back when A Sky Full of Stars was given its debut on the Ghost Stories promo tour as the boys went on to play True Love for the first time on the tour! Chris started the forth track off Ghost Stories with a heart symbol made by his hands with Will playing on the drum pad and Jonny's guitar having a 'banjo-like quality to' according to thedrpepper08 on the Coldplaying forums who also added the song was "Very laidback but also completely different to any other song I've heard on the album". Chris bellows out "Once upon a time I was yours, you were mine" in the broken heart themed track.

Coldplay scheduled a Video Shoot performance yesterday afternoon (March 22nd). Different to a normal gig, there were many more breaks, pauses and repeat tracks. Below are the first four Coldplayer reviews from the shoot. It appears that not only is a DVD being filmed, but there will be an NBC special on Coldplay later in the month...

It wasn’t a typical concert which goes from song to song, because they had to repeat some segments, do some shorter segments, and do technical shooting. They didn’t play the whole album which I think they did last night, but they played 6 new songs. The theater was set up in an in-the-round style with a very small stage in the center.

I was first row directly next to Chris (maybe 6-8 feet away), so I could see his amazing piano playing. While I love Chris, my seating location meant that I had to watch the other guys’ backs much of the time, although Guy and Jonny were good about turning around for at least a few songs. Nevertheless, it’s the closest I’ve ever been to any band, so I’m not complaining! The whole setup was so beautiful, with trees surrounded by candles, paper stars hanging from the ceiling, and a 360 degree video screen around all the back walls displaying images for each song. Chris confirmed that this will be a DVD and an NBC special in about a month. It sounds like the videos will tell some story or journey, as he briefly explained when they showed a clip of him diving into a pool of water. Someone yelled at them to ask when they are going on tour, and Chris said he doesn’t know and that they want to play in small settings like this for a while (who knows whether he didn’t want to leak any info or whether a tour is not in the works).

The setlist as I remember it was Paradise, Always in my Head, Magic, True Love, Midnight, Another’s Arms, A Sky Full of Stars (twice!!), plus a tutorial from Chris on how to sing the Sky Full of Stars chorus for the filming. They played a 10 second snippet of another song which I assume was a retake from yesterday. Then they asked for requests and ended up playing Clocks and The Scientist. At the beginning Chris did an aerial scene complete with flying and flips, all while singing (for the life of me I can’t remember which song it was for, but it was at the beginning).

All the new songs are wonderful, and I even like Midnight (which I didn’t care for before after watching the video). Every song seems like it could be a hit, especially A Sky Full of Stars. Overall it was a surreal experience and I am so thankful to 1iota for making my day (or year!). To be front row in such an intimate setting was a dream come true, and I can’t wait to hear them again tomorrow and buy the album in May.

Chris was hilarious today. He is the best "warm up man" ever. They opened with Paradise, then played the new album, then closed with Clocks and The Scientist by request.

The DVD will be amazing. Chris was explaining the concepts behind the visuals and there will be other non-performance clips included. I am so freaking happy right now. Ended up front row behind Will and with a dead on view of the piano. Still recovering from having Chris sing right at me.

Since this was to pick up shots they didn't get yesterday, we didn't hear every new song, no Ink or Ocean. Of the new, new songs, stars and True love. I can't say enough good things about Stars. It has the potential to be one of my very favorite live Coldplay songs. I can't wait to hear it again.

True Love is a ballad, I think it's a bit dark lyrically and it's in the same restrained vein as the other new songs I heard. There is a distinct sound to this album and it's a sound I happen to adore. (Full disclosure: MX is my least favorite album and a big reason why is I thought it was just too much so I love the change in direction.)

Always in my Head was performed as it was during iTunes fest. I really love the stripped down sound they have moved to for GS. Another's arms, also same as iTunes with Chris at piano and projections of women under water. it is also another darker song lyrically.

Plus, LFDianne wrote: Still processing what happened tonight. I really have no words yet. It was beautiful and perfect. Somehow I ended up in what I thought was THE perfect location, very front row between Chris piano and wills drums. Omg. Chris sat in front of me for Midnight, crazy. Chris plays a laser harp thingie too, right in front of me. They wheeled out the viva bell and drums, right in front of me. Made eye contact with Chris many times and he laughed, I also got the googly eye thing. Lol. Stage was magical, performance was gorgeous. How can I ever top this tomorrow? And Ghost Stories is stunning.

Coldplay performed the whole of the Ghost Stories album during a secret show at a Sony Studios location in Los Angeles last night (21st March). More on this including new photos and Coldplayer reviews is at the Coldplay Live forum now.

It was a surprisingly low key return for the biggest band in the world, if you can ever call performing an internet broadcast to an online audience of tens of millions low key, writes the UK's Daily Telegraph, in a review of Coldplay at last night's iTunes Festival at SXSW in Texas. The Telegraph continued: Coldplay took to the stage casually attired in their trademark student garb of trainers, black jeans and tight T-shirts - only singer Chris Martin standing out in a pristine white top. An array of instruments were clumped together centre stage, and band members focussed moodily and intently on setting up a gentle, swaying breeze of slow bass, shuffling drums and tinkling guitar as Martin crooned sweet nothings about someone always being in his heart. Given the hype and expectation, it was like opening the Super Bowl with a lullaby.

Dispensing with the paint-spattered costumes, flashing wrist bands, graffiti set and batteries of multi-coloured special effects that marked their triumphant 2012 Mylo Xylto tour, the stadium superstars seemed intent on presenting themselves as the house band at a chill- out club. Four new songs were all characterised by a quality of undemonstrativeness, gliding gently in the shimmering, supple textures of spacey ambient pop, sounding like music to do underwater yoga to. There was not a stirring, singalong anthem amongst them. Even the stage lighting was muted, blues and reds bathing the band in washes of single colours. Last time round, Coldplay threw everything they had at the audience with a conviction that sometimes bigger really is better; this time the guiding principle might have been less is more.

Even in stripped-back form, the songs proved powerful and persuasive. Delivering rousing versions of half a dozen of their biggest hits with Martin’s enthusiastic charisma focussing the band’s intense drive, Coldplay ensured the audience was reverent and attentive for quieter, more intimate new songs like Magic and Another’s Arms.

I’m not convinced this understated new direction is an entirely accurate picture of their forthcoming album, Ghost Stories, though. Coldplay are an extremely self-aware band, and they are not about to reveal their whole hand before a big game. The Moody Theatre in Austin, Texas is an intimate venue that holds under 3,000 but Martin was acutely aware of the potentially vast internet audience beyond, even inviting them to “singalong world!” I’m not sure that was ever going to work under the circumstances. I have previously attended the iTunes festival in person in London, but for its American debut I tuned in from my living room in London on AppleTV. It meant I had the best seat in the house but audience participation routines don’t have quite the same effect when you are hunkered down on a comfy sofa.

Coldplay closed their set with the epic Fix You, rather awkwardly introduced with a reference to “everyone involved with the Malaysian airplane”, as if this uplifting anthem required a disaster to lend its compassion context. It was the only moment when I wondered if they might really be losing touch with their everyman instincts. If so, encore of new song Midnight represented a tantalising glimpse of a possible future, with Martin hunkered down, duetting with a tremulous emotional intensity to his own vocoder shadow while his band mates conjured up a luscious electronic pulse from a trio of synthesisers. It was enough to demonstrate that Coldplay have the skill and confidence to dispense with all their usual songwriting tropes and still shoot straight for the heart.

Christmas came early for Coldplay fans who got tickets to the band's only major British show this year, writes the London Evening Standard in a review of last night's Under1Roof charity gig. It was also a gift for charity Kids Company, following the £400,000 raised for vulnerable children by Coldplay's O2 gig in 2011.

The Evening Standard continued: Chris Martin’s admission in the programme that it might turn out to be "passionately ramshackle" was accurate in the case of support act Lily Allen, who confessed she hadn’t brought a band for her comeback. Martin stepped in for an acoustic duet of The Fear, though Allen shared more pop chemistry with surprise guest Robbie Williams on Dream A Little Dream from his chart-topping album.

Allen has the number one single with a cover of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know — featured on the John Lewis advert — and she was joined by the band’s Tim Rice-Oxley on piano. “This guy is earning a lot of money off me right now,” Allen pointed out.

The audience singalong to her fragile vocals was good practice for Coldplay, who were on remarkable live form for a band who have been shut in the studio. “I see we still have the best fans in the world,” said Martin following their noisy chanting during the opening Clocks. Whether roaming the stage or at his piano, he was a hyperactive frontman who looked thrilled to be back.

There was a live debut for spooky ballad Atlas from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, though no other clues to the band’s current direction. Their previous direction still sounded spectacular during the chiming guitars of Charlie Brown and uplifting anthem Paradise, while the audience’s illuminated wristbands made it a communal pop experience like no other.

Coldplay’s Christmas Lights was a subdued finale, though Martin couldn’t resist a rendition of White Christmas, featuring fake snow, to send us home with some proper festive cheer.

Coldplay's 2011 headline appearance has been voted the top Glastonbury moment by BBC Radio listeners this week. More discussion on this is at the Coldplay forum now [thanks Tash]

Coldplay's performance on the Pyramid Stage beat competition from Radiohead and Blur to top the vote. The shortlist was compiled by various BBC radio personalities including Nick Grimshaw, Dermot O'Leary and Jo Whiley. Radiohead's (2003) and Blur's (2009) Pyramid Stage appearances polled second and third respectively, with Bruce Springsteen's performance of Thunder Road in 2009 coming fourth. Sets from Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z and Elbow also featured in the top ten.

Jo Whiley - who submitted Coldplay's set - said: "Coldplay at Glastonbury 2011 is my absolute favourite moment. Knowing how much it meant to them - to be headlining a festival they grew up with and that they performed at in their infancy as a band - it was probably the biggest, most important gig of their careers and lives. Watching it and seeing them absolutely nail it with every song and with the staging and pyrotechnics, creating the most incredible atmosphere for the Glastonbury audience and not putting a foot wrong, or rather laughing when things did go awry. It made my heart swell right out of my ribcage. I could not have been happier for them. It was the perfect Pyramid headline set."

For some time, the British band has been a well-oiled entertainment machine, and last night at Barclays Center their vast array of bells and whistles took up almost as much focus as any of their songs. There probably isn’t a crowd in the world that Chris Martin can’t coax into excitement and even though the band is due to play a New Year’s Eve show at Barclays with Jay-Z tonight, the front man was determined to get the party started early. “No one ever spares a thought for poor old December 30th,” he chirped. “Tomorrow’s just a ‘warm down’ for this show!”

Indeed, for the first half- hour, it was more like being at a pageant than a pop concert. Crowd members were given light-emitting bracelets upon arrival, which flashed in sync to opener “Hurts Like Heaven” and numerous other tracks, thus creating a spectacular human light show. Gigantic blasts of confetti also accompanied the rousing chorus of “In My Place” and the release of huge inflatable balls rounded off a robust run-through of “Major Minus.” It’s a shame they weren’t in town a month ago because, with tricks like that, they would have been a smash at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But thankfully, Coldplay allowed their chops to slowly cut through the choreography. Almost 15 years on from their formation, they still have a small army of naysayers who gleefully write them off as wimpy and whiny. It’s an accusattion that the quartet make a point countering by giving songs like “Violet Hill” and “God Put A Smile On Your Face” a thunderous make over. It’s here that the Chris Martin show temporarily takes a break and the other members of the band get their chance to shine, especially guitarist Jonny Buckland, who can elicit a truly remarkable palette of sounds from his ax. The only thing that stands between him and guitar-hero status is the fact that he dresses like a soldier who’s just been kicked out of the army for being too unfashionable.

But the quartet rarely indulge themselves musically. Instead, the main concern is taking the show to the crowd — in every possible sense. Aside from the main stage, the band also utilizes a second stage in the middle of the arena from where they deliver an electronically driven version of the Rihanna duet “Princess Of China,” with Ri-Ri adding her part via a pre-recorded video playback. Martin even throws in an acoustic encore from the back of the arena, while standing touching distance from the delighted fans stuck in the cheap seats. If it all sounds like one pandering gesture after another, that’s because it probably is. But there’s no denying the outcome. As the house lights go up, 18,000 visibly excited fans walk out singing the band’s harmonies in unison and go home feeling that they weren’t just spectators to Coldplay’s show, but that they were actually part of it. Now, that really is entertainment.

Coldplay quite literally lit-up Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium Wednesday night during a tour-wrapping show in which Chris Martin dropped big hints that his band won't be back for some time, writes Billboard in another featured review of Coldplay's show at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia (21st November). This was a proper open-air event, complete with fireworks, giant inflatable balls, glowing hearts and butterflies, lasers and confetti, all framed within a sea of glowing light. And the British four piece -- Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion -- pulled off a joyful, exuberant set.

It's almost unimaginable the leap this band has made from the melancholy of their first album, 2000's "Parachutes", to the stadium-fillers they are today. They're surely the mainstream rock group of their generation, a group who can shut down parts of a city on the other side of the world like they did here, and count small children and grandparents among the fans...

In Brisbane, like on the earlier dates in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, they gave a workout to songs from across their canon. There's a big push for their new album "Mylo Xyloto," its title track the opening number of more than 20 tracks played. Early on, Martin thanked the crowd for coming, and promises "that we're going to play for you the best fucking show in our life."

The biggest rise accompanies the older stuff - "The Scientist," "In My Place," "Violet Hill," but there's a lot of love for the new. Rihanna appears dynastic across three big screens during "Princess of China." But there's a strangely muted initial response for "Yellow," the audience not tuned-in to the stripped-back piano reworking of the first verse. Normal service is resumed when the familiar guitars drop.

In an age when every band is desperately trying to harness technology to connect with a mass audience, it seems Coldplay have actually cracked it. On entry, ticket holders were given a wristband with a chunky element which, during the performances, activates into a pulsing light. The stadium becomes a sea of flashing color; everyone is part of the show and there's a neat memento to show your friends. In years past, bands used to asked audience members to wave a lighter in the air. Since the '90s, fans held their phones aloft. That's all so old-school.

Coldplay haven't shied away from taking the long haul to Australia. They played arenas - and the "Sound Relief" Sydney show -- on their 2009 tour. And they headlined Splendour in the Grass festival last year when it was still in Woodfordia, Queensland. Martin clearly has fun working this crowd, and working colloquial expressions into the songs.

"God put a smile upon your face," he sang. "50,000 Queenslanders in this place." Actually, it was 52,500. "Thank you for the greatest job on earth," Martin enthuses. "We're in the greatest place in the world." And during a pause in "Clocks," Martin drops the line, "We come from a land Down Under."

One of the biggest cheers came in "Miss You," which segued into "My Happiness," one of the indelible songs of Brisbane rockers Powderfinger, which broke up in 2010. The members of Powerfinger became friends with Coldplay when they supported the Brits on U.S. dates a decade ago. "We miss you Powderfinger," Martin tells the audience. The last leg of a tour is typically cause for a good celebration. Though on this night, Coldplay had more reason to party. "This is the last big show for three years or so," Martin told the stadium crowd. "I don't want to stop."

(Coldplay has three arena shows lined up for the end of December, but after that their schedule is cleared.) They also played a mini-set at the end of a catwalk and later at the far end of the venue. "You can't come to the other side of the world and not visit the back of the stadium," says Martin as he launches into "Us Against the World" on the acoustic guitar, as each member clamours on stage to growing applause.

The anthemic "Fix You" arrived during the encore, a song Marin dedicated "for all you boys taking part in Movember," a cancer fundraising initiative where all participants leave their upper lips to sprout hair during the month November. In the afterglow of this show, an online poll conducted by the local Courier Mail newspaper found almost 1,000 music fans rated this show as the city's best ever stadium performance. Bettering shows by AC/DC, Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and other luminaries.

Coldplay now moves on to the U.S. for a trio of arena dates culminating in a New Year's Eve pairing with Jay-Z at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

And here they are with all the bells, whistles, pyrotechnics and flashing wristbands that money can buy, playing to more than 50,000 fans at a rare Suncorp Stadium concert last night. But the moody atmosphere of their early days has lately been replaced by a band sounding positively chipper on most recent album Mylo Xyloto, a pop record down to the Rihanna duet.

They do play loads of songs from it in their first Brisbane appearance since 2009 but there is plenty else to go around in a show like this, with early favourites like In My Place and Yellow having the throng singing along for all they were worth...

Whatever you think of their records, Chris Martin is an energetic and charismatic frontman. But it takes more than that to reach to people sitting hundreds of metres away, and Coldplay manage to do it with their vast circular video screens, laser light beams and the kaleidoscope light effect of the light wristbands given to every member of the audience.

And then there was the confetti! As a spectacle it is dazzling, even by the high standards set by Radiohead on their visit here. And by the clever use of all these effects, you somehow feel like you are getting close to Coldplay, even if they are just four men looking like ants in the distance.

"It's gonna be a good one, boys!" cried Coldplay singer/guitarist/piano guy Chris Martin, accurately, to his cohorts during opener Hurts Like Heaven, writes SMH in our first featured review of Coldplay's show at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia (17th November). What do you want from a stadium rock show? Erupting fireworks, dazzling lasers and confetti cannons in overdrive? More-original spectacular sights such as 50 thousand raised fists illuminated by flashing multicoloured wristbands (supplied on entry and triggered by the band)? Anthems that can fill such an expansive venue and a frontman who can seemingly connect with everyone in it?

These Brit rock world-beaters not only provided all this before the end of this evening’s second song (the lush ballad In My Place), they somehow seemed able to keep the rain away, too...

Having instantly put a smile upon most faces by arriving to the stirring orchestral theme from the Back to the Future movies, the band spent the rest of the evening giving everyone, from first-time gig-goers to those who think they’ve seen it all, a large-scale concert experience as impressive as few others.

If it sounds like they might as well have been playing any old nonsense and no one would have cared, such was the enormity of the spectacle, that wasn’t the case, either. Even with a set skewed heavily towards good-not-great current album Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay had plenty of their biggest (in every sense) tunes ready to drop at regular intervals: the achingly pretty The Scientist; after a sweetly muted piano-and-vocals-led intro, a vigorous Yellow; the pounding march of Violet Hill.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Mylo Xyloto tunes stood up well, too. The aforementioned Hurts Like Heaven, formerly a rather goofy album opener, became rousing and vibrant, while Major Minus cantered along on a raw groove of aggressively strummed acoustic guitar and whipcrack beats (despite a botched - deliberately for comic purposes? - intro).

Martin even played an impromptu verse and chorus of Elton John's Rocket Man in tribute to the band's current hotel neighbour.

Most of the show was bombastically performed on the main stage in front of an elaborate graffiti backdrop and five huge circular screens. Some came more intimately presented at the end of a runway stretching into the crowd. There was even a brief, beautiful acoustic mini-set on a tiny stage towards the back of the stadium. Pretty much all of it was unforgettable.

Coldplay play their second and final show at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Why? Because the group, who have previously described themselves as ‘one of Britain’s premium soft rock bands’ and reluctant stadium fillers, put on a display that was bursting with so much colour, fireworks and bells and whistles that it probably would have cured you. In fact, anyone who wanted to see one of the world’s biggest bands cement themselves as bona-fide live superstars should have been there.

I walked into Etihad Stadium to the sounds of country-twanged New York sisters The Pierces. Their band was nice for about five minutes…then, it got a bit dreary. The girls were nice and interactive with the crowd; however, their tunes aren’t obviously built for stadiums yet. One of them mentioned that they were playing at the North-Coat (Northcote) Social Club on Thursday – any fans would probably be wise to see them there instead...

Constantly mentioning how good it was to be home, local boys The Temper Trap then flexed their muscles with a solid 50-minute set, which showed that they are slowly building a nice catalogue of arena-fillers. Cuts from their new self-titled album such as Rabbit Hole and Never Again slotted in nicely with early hits Fader and Love Lost, which were piled out early on. And naturally, leaving their biggest hit for last (Sweet Disposition) got everyone in a mighty good mood.

Making the move up to stadiums on this tour, I was worried Coldplay wouldn’t be able to put together a show that would be ideal and inclusive for a stadium-sized crowd. How wrong I was. Aside from the awesome flashing wristbands that turned the place into a giant galaxy of colours – Coldplay bombarded us with an immersive experience full of fireworks, lasers, bright coloured graphics and paper butterflies. And that was only in the first three songs (Mylo Xyloto, Hurts Like Heaven and In My Place). Check out the video below for a small snippet of that. Giant balloons and more confetti then made their way through the crowd for Lovers in Japan, and later in the night, stacks of giant glow-in-the-dark objects made their presence felt in the Etihad stands at the sides of the stage.

Yellow and a rowdy new version of God Put a Smile Upon Your Face (complete with guitar duelling and a guitar throw at the end of the song from Chris Martin) were as stadium-rock sounding as you could get. Later in the night, the flashing wristbands were fully utilised as the words “glowing in the dark” rang true during Charlie Brown, which was followed up by neon graphics en-masse in Paradise. And, to show the love to the punters a bit further back, there was not just one, but two visits to other parts of the venue for some stripped-down segments. The first – at the end of the catwalk – featured Princess of China (with Rhianna singing on the big screen), Up in Flames, and the choice inclusion of ballad Warning Sign from 2002′s A Rush of Blood to the Head.

The second visit saw them venture to the back GA section for Us Against the World and an acoustic version of Speed of Sound (with a false start 20 seconds in!). The band then returned to the main stage to pile out the anthems – Clocks, Fix You and finishing with Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, which soundtracked another multicoloured apocalypse. Chris Martin declared at the start of the night: “You’ve all made such a huge effort to come here, so we’re gonna repay you by trying to give you the best fucking concert you’ve ever seen”. I have no doubt quite a few thousand people walked out of Etihad Stadium last night feeling as though that promise was fulfilled. Bono and U2, be scared. Be very scared. Because every time I see Coldplay (the band who idolise you) live, they take another step towards snatching your crown as the biggest band in the world. Based on the magic they created last night, consider this a giant one.

It was such a simple piece of gadgetry, worn by the bulk of the 60,000 crowd inside Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, that became a bonding element for audience and band as Coldplay opened their Australian tour on Monday.

The multicoloured wristbands, triggered to light up by the beats and guitar riffs of several Coldplay songs, created quite a spectacle, not least during their Australian No 1 (their first here, as singer Chris Martin pointed out), Paradise. The place lit up like a Christmas tree...

Stadiums demand such devices, of course, in order to create an atmosphere of intimacy when in fact, for the majority, there are just four specks at one end of the paddock creating the music. Early on, during Mylo Xyloto/Hurts Like Heaven and the anthemic ballad In My Place, it was debatable whether the accompanying pyrotechnics, including fireworks, balloons and guns firing confetti, would be enough to get Coldplay over the stadium line. They did it, though, thanks for the most part to their stagecraft and a lengthy list of songs that seem tailor-made for such large, willing, vocal audiences.

Show me a Coldplay anthem and I'll show you five more, and all of them got an airing in Melbourne, serving to underline that -- whether you think them cool or otherwise -- this band writes damn catchy pop songs. Since their first visit to Australia on the back of their debut album, the breakthrough hit Yellow has never failed to ignite an audience and it did so here, with guitarist Jonny Buckland's riff giving the song a meatier than usual rock edge as a foil to Martin's lyrical romanticism.

Drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman added power and dynamism to the band's structures. During an acoustic set on a small stage to the back of the arena, all four showed their softer side on guitars, vocals and keyboards on the songs Us Against the World and Speed of Sound.

It was on the main stage, however, that Coldplay showed that they are capable -- and indeed at home -- with stadium rock. Martin, Buckland and Berryman worked the walkways, lifting the crowd during the bombastic Major Minus and Violet Hill. Even more affective were the relatively recent singalongs Viva La Vida, Charlie Brown and, to close the main set, the aforementioned Paradise. They pressed all the right buttons here, ending with an encore that included early hit Clocks, followed by the best ballad in the band's recording career, Fix You, and closing with the passionate, fiery Every Teardrop.

The show lasted two hours but seemed to flash by much quicker than that. Perhaps there was something in those wristbands that made time stand still, or at least slow down, until the last firework hit the Melbourne sky and it was all over.

It’s been quite a week and a half for live music here in Auckland…Mumford & Sons, The Black Keys, Ben Harper and Radiohead…and now the biggest show of the bunch, Coldplay at Mt Smart Stadium, writes 13th Floor magazine in a not-so-happy review of Coldplay's show at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand this evening (10th November). With the technological showcase that Radiohead displayed at The Vector this past Tuesday, I was interested to see how Coldplay’s arena show stacked up against Radiohead’s. Well, for one thing, they started with a bang. Usually the fireworks are saved for the encore, but Chris Martin and company had them shooting skyward right from the start. And that wasn’t all, there were lasers, there was confetti, there were balloons and there were wristbands that flashed in the dark. Every member of the audience was given a wristband as the entered the stadium and encouraged to wear it as it was “part of the show”. Sure enough after a few minutes of hearing Jay-Z’s 99 Problems, the lights abruptly went out and the wrist bands all began flashing with the band’s very first notes. It looked incredible.

During In My Places cannons were firing off confetti throughout the venue. During Lovers In Japan the balloons came out. There was certainly plenty to see, even if the band itself looked tiny at the far end of the stadium...

Sound-wise, things weren’t so impressive. Where I was sitting, about halfway back along the side, the vocals were mostly unintelligible and the music was muddy. It’s a shame as much care and effort wasn’t put into the music as the special effects. I must say, no one seemed to mind. There was plenty of singing along and clapping and cheering. The songs from Coldplay’s latest, Mylo Xyloto, sound like they were written for stadiums with loads of “whoas” and “Ooooos” throughout the songs. And they performed just about the entire album.

Of course there were the old favourites as well…Yellow got an early airing as did The Scientist and Vive La Vida had everyone up and singing. Chris Martin seemed determined to be everywhere at once, running cheerily from one end of the stage to the other, up the middle ramp and eventually to the rear of the stadium. In addition to the main stage, the band set up on a smaller stage further into the crowd for several songs beginning with Princess Of China, which also featured a video appearance by Rihanna.

Then, for the encore, Martin, and eventually the rest of the band appeared on another smaller stage at the rear of the stadium playing an acoustic version of Us Against The World, which was, for me, one of the musical high points. Although this is a show that has been playing around the world for some time, with the identical set list performed each time, Martin did try to inject some spontaneity into the proceedings. He dedicated Yellow to Christchurch and thanked the many fans who had come from all over the country, particularly the South Island.

At one point they stopped God Put A Smile Upon Your Face and re-started it, apologizing that they had messed it up. I have my doubts. It seemed to sound the same both times, and they have apparently pulled this stunt at previous shows. After performing Fix You as the fourth song of the encores, Martin asked if we wanted one more song…as if there was any stopping him. There were still more fireworks, more lasers and more lights to flicker before we were send off into the night.

The many fans in attendance looked like they loved the show. For me, I found the music rather uninspiring…which is the opposite of the effect they were aiming for. Plus, they just seem a bit too eager to please and the special effects showed that they were willing to go to any length to do just that. There seemed to be a lot of pre-recorded music mixed with the live instruments and I couldn’t help but feel I was being manipulated in some way. I’m sure I was in the minority, and it’s always good to see so many folks enjoying music together. I’m afraid I wasn’t one of them this time.

After exchanging hugs with Chris, Jay took over the stage from Coldplay, who had a riot of a performance with lots of color and movement, in contrast to the rapper who was alone on stage and was mostly standing throughout his performance as he spit his rhymes.

Coldplay kicked off the concert at 10pm and played a 15-song set, to the delight of a packed Barclays Center. The venue lit up as fans were each given bracelets that had multi-colored lights that blinked in step. The crowd sang along with the band as they dished out their hits "The Scientist" and "Paradise", as confetti canons and world map beach balls were rolled out. Rihanna appeared in the screens put up around the arena as the band performed "Princess of China".

Chris told the audience to "please have a good time," and "cherish the people you love" before Jay, in a casual white t-shirt, joined the group for a duet of "Lost". Martin was a bolt of energy as Coldplay dished out one track after another, with their line-up including their hits "Viva La Vida", "Yellow", "Us Against the World" and "Clocks".

When it was Jay's turn to take over the other half of the show, he delivered his 25-song set which started with "Run This Town". The new father ended the night around 1:30 A.M. with some inspiring words, "2012 was a major year for me, it was the birth of my beautiful daughter Blue, it was the birth of this building. Tonight I feel like I'm in the right place. I wish you the best 2013 possible. Peace and love."

In between the two headliners' sets, DJ Cassidy spun Michael Jackson's and Journey's tracks while the crew changed the stage backdrops.

He didn't just play guitar. He hopped and sprang while he did, doubling over or throwing his head back. When he took to the piano for songs like "Paradise," he didn't merely tap the keys. He thumped them, and he bounced on the stool. He bounded down the stage runway with his so-unhip-they're-hip dance moves and then dropped to his knees and bent backwards like a latter-day Springsteen.

He made sure to play to every part of the arena — scampering up to the top tier to perform a couple of songs, taking a few tours around the ramp behind the stage to give audience members back there their due...

If that makes him sound manic, he wasn't. He was just a really effective frontman.

If Martin was a rock 'n' roll dervish, the concert as a whole was just as spirited and entertaining. The band was tight, with drummer Will Champion in particularly vigorous form. Coldplay's songs, when played live, crackled with more vitality than they do in their recorded versions.

One segment did bog down, with a trio of underwhelming songs — "Princess of China," with Martin dueting with a videotaped Rihanna, "Up in Flames" and "Warning Sign." The band, though, immediately bounced back with "Don't Let It Break Your Heart" and the always wonderful "Viva La Vida."

And, oh, the cool stagecraft on display! When concert-goers entered, they were each given wristbands that lit up and flashed at various points in the show, making it look as if the auditorium suddenly filled with vibrantly colored fireflies. Cannons showered the audience with a snowfall of confetti during "In My Place" — the second song of the night. Hey, why wait for the finale to shoot off the cannons? For the remainder of the evening, the confetti littered the stage runway like rose pedals scattered down a wedding aisle.

Neon-shaded graffiti covered some of the set and even some of the instruments. Lights, naturally, zapped and glowed.

All that visual extravagance could have overwhelmed the music or seemed like shtick, but it worked.

Coldplay found a fab opening act in Naturally 7. The seven guys created all the sounds with their voices — no instruments, although you'd be hard-pressed to tell based on the full-bodied songs they produced. Hearing a performer create the equivalent of a drum solo using just percussive vocals was pretty astounding.

"We want to make this the most memorable night of your life," he declared at the outset of a 90 minute performance. "So every year when December 29 rolls around, you will celebrate."

Whether or not the 10,000 or so fans gathered in the Connecticut woods will be holding an annual celebration remains to be seen, but Coldplay made a solid effort at turning an ordinary arena concert into something memorable. Yes there were a lot of props and lasers and suspended video boards that some might consider gimmicky. But sometimes gimmicky equates to memorable...

The pomp and circumstance began at the front door, where each patron was handed a Coldplay-labeled bracelet. It continued when those bracelets lit up on musical cue to the opening song “Hurts Like Heaven” and the arena was drenched in brilliant, bouncing colored lights. The confetti cannons were emptied next, colors equally bright, creating a buoyant feeling in the room during “In My Place.”

In a move that seemed like they were emptying every arrow from the quiver, the band released giant inflatable globes that bounded across the top of the crowd during “Lovers in Japan.”

The music was fine. The pageantry was stunning. There were quieter, more musical moments, just to remind the faithful that this is a solid band with live performing chops and songs that have a flow and grandeur. The best of those moments included “Yellow” which started on Martin’s piano before the band joined in, and “Warning Sign” which was sung with the whole group out at the end of a catwalk that extended across the arena floor.

The band saved the last surprise for the encore, appearing out at the back of the hall to play acoustically on songs like “Us Against The World” and “Speed of Sound."

They made their way back through the crowd to ignite the main stage with closing songs “Clocks” and “Fix You.” Naturally 7 performed an opening set of acapella, beat box and R&B-styled songs that included a cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” and the George Harrison-penned Beatles song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Chris Martin joined forces with R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe for a special performance of ‘Losing My Religion’ during the 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden last night, writes Diffuser in a review of the benefit event. According to NBC anchor Brian Williams, who appeared onscreen soon after to solicit donations, the team-up was a surprise even to those involved with the planning, and Chris himself seemed humbled to share the stage with one of his heroes. "This is really happening," Chris said, strumming the opening chords to R.E.M.’s biggest hit. Stipe handled most of the lead vocals, but the pair harmonized in spots, and when it was over, Chris poked fun at his duet partner’s recent lack of musical output, saying: "He came out of retirement for that song, and now he’s gone right back in."

It wasn’t the only quip in Martin’s three-song acoustic set, which carried the show past the midnight mark and also included the Coldplay tunes ‘Viva la Vida’ and ‘Us Against the World.’ Following ‘Viva,’ the oft-self-deprecating superstar rated his own popularity somewhere below that of Britain’s reigning boy band. "I know you really wanted One Direction," he said, "but it’s way past their bedtime."

I think Chris was great . I think I am one of the few people who liked Viva on the guitar ...really lovely ! He was a bit nervous , which is acceptable considering the Line-up he was a part of! But he has to start to give himself some credit , I thought he would quit all the pop references like one direction and Gangnam Style and talk serious for once considering it was a charity show. But, then again its Chris ... ! I loved his performance and was sooo proud ! Losing My Releigion with Michael Stipe was one of the high points of the show for me . UATW was sooo beautiful , was almost crying! It was all in all amazing , not to mention the suit! [thanks teernabh5]

He was too nervous, if you want to be honest, Viva La Vida didnt work on the guitar and UATW just sounded too disjointed on the piano. I dont really know what he was thinking. The suit seemed a bit inappropriate and he came across a bit goofy whenever he spoke. It was a decent effort though, and a good collaboration with michael Stipe. [thanks Lukestar1991]

I feel like he did get caught a few times in UATW, but otherwise I thought his performance was fantastic. I felt he was in prime performance shape, in my opinion. Maybe it is just because he didn't have to go for any of those high notes. [thanks erynf_1996]

I don't think Viva quite worked on guitar either. I think if you'd have swapped them around (Viva on piano and UATW on guitar) then it would have been better. We've heard Chris do parts of Viva on piano before (a snippet at Glastonbury 2011), and we all know that he's great on guitar in UATW. So maybe swapping them around would have made it better, but it was still good nonetheless. It is Chris Martin afterall, so it's bound to be good! [thanks ColdplaySheffield]

I loved it. I had an exhausting and awful week (semester's finals) and since I watched this performance this afternoon (twice, actually ) all I want to do is: sleep, watch series, listen to this and nothing else. I thought VLV sounded pretty great, although he kinda rushed the end (but he was so excited about his upcoming performance with Michael Stipe that I understand ) and it's weird to hear it without any other instrument or loud "oooh"s. He seemed quite nervous (with such a line-up, and a performance with one of his favourite artists, I guess, that's very much understandable), but damn was he enthusiastic and enjoying himself during Losing My Religion! I mean, it's the case most times, but you could really felt that he was very happy to be there and to perform with Michael Stipe. UATW is lovely on piano, especially the end, imo! However, same as in VLV, it felt weird without hearing Will's voice, or the crowd. Great performance and ohmygod please let next era's clothing be suits, I don't care, Chris won't move on stage it's okay, just daaaammn! [thanks Coeurli]

All three songs were great, although I think the combination of Chris and Jonny, or even Chris and Will is so much better than Chris on his own. Viva was cool, I like the moment when he says "the sound, the sound of drums." UATW was beautiful but lacking in Will. He and Michael Stipe sound good together too. [thanks MosesTheMarshmallow]

I loved the way he arranged each song! Viva on guitar, UATW on piano... And Losing My Religion was beautiful too, their voices together are pretty great. Also, UATW was a perfect choice also considering its meaning: starting over, being alone against all difficulties...!!! He had to sing it! I also loved his joke about One Direction And how he was FINALLY dressed up as he should! I know they'll never use suits for concerts 'cause they're uncomfortable, and if you just consider how much Chris sweats... Suits aren't a suitable choice, no. What else can I say... STYLISH performance. My opinion: Viva on acoustic guitar works better than piano versions, that I have heard. Don’t know why, but for me Viva with Chris alone on piano becomes boring after first verse. With acoustic guitar performance was more energetic and ryhtmic. And with suit on, that was just stylish. Also good idea to perform Losing My Religion with Michael Stipe. Us Against the World on piano is even more calming than on guitar and that worked well in that setlist. But like always, Chris performing alone looks a bit nervous and lost. [thanks CP-EST]

As for the performance. Yeah he looked nervous the first seconds, but after that he performed fine. I enjoyed this acoustic version of Viva La Vida better than other piano versions he has perfomed. This is just my opinion though. I think Chris Martin killed it with UATW, and of course that Michael Stipe duet was great. My only complaint? It was only 10 minutes. [thanks guda4siempre]

He wasn't there to sell his album, to sell the MX theme, so the MX outfit would have been inappropriate. I am biased, I am a fan of the suit. Everyone here who said the suit was appropriate and fitting to the event was spot on. I hate it when people underdress for occasions (even though Chris has done that in the past!) I don't understand what could possibly be inappropriate about wearing a suit to an event like this. Or to any event, for that matter (unless it's a pajama party). But yeah, I'm biased as well. Just watched the performance and I thought he was brilliant! A bit rushed during Viva, but it was very refreshing to hear on an acoustic guitar. Wow, I just went through the whole thread. Thank you for posting those great pictures and videos!!! I woke up a bit earlier (believe me that normally NEVER happens ) and I wasn't disappointed. THE SUIT: first of all, from a fangirl point of view --> flippin hot. But not only that: also very classy and elegant and respectful. I loved Chris' performance, truly. I love how presented himself. And his jokes are always priceless. Viva on the guitar was very, very beautiful, I thought. And UATW on the piano was so great and emotional. WOW. Just wonderful. We are very lucky to have heard these two songs performed in a quite unusual way. The performance of Losing My Religion was also amazing. He persuaded Michael Stipe to come and sing, that's awesome It sounded great, and Chris was a real fanboy. So, I really loved it, it was short, but just great. [thanks m@r@]

It wasn't the world-beating backdrop of Sydney Harbour which momentarily upstaged Coldplay this morning but Chris Martin's dad, writes the Herald Sun in a review of Coldplay's performance outside the Sydney Opera House for Sunrise (15th November). Coldplay also played a secret gig this afternoon for 2DayFm and Max, with the backing of new telco player Huawei. And now it is back to their day job, playing two sold out concerts at Allianz Stadium in Sydney this weekend in front of 90,000 people, before heading to Brisbane for the final concert. Chris Martin's father Anthony, who has travelled with the band on three of their Australian tours, was as popular with the fans as his understated rock star son when they performed on the Sydney Opera House northern forecourt. "He looks after him really well when I'm on tour, I am utterly spoiled," Mr Martin said as his son watched from the stage. I think he would agree we have a pretty good relationship, wouldn't you, boy?"

The band opened their exclusive set for Sunrise with Yellow, the song that launched them onto the world's charts. "Oh we made it at 7.30!" Martin said at the end of the song, referencing the very un-rock hour for their performance. They went on to perform recent single Charlie Brown, Viva La Vida and their biggest Australian hit, Paradise, which just happened to soundtrack the promos for Seven's hit series Revenge.

Chris thrilled fans by spending the minutes between their songs chatting and posing for photographs. Renowned for their activism on Free Trade issues, Martin joked that they would switch to a new campaign on their Australian tour.
