Back Tn The Day When Coldplay Autographed Hats!

I met Coldplay before they were big and got all their autographs… on my hat.

After seeing Coldplay play a small show (about 50 people were there) at First Avenue in Minneapolis (it was a warmup show for songs off A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which hadn’t come out yet), my friend and I were walking around the area before driving back to Madison, WI.

We walked around the corner of the club back to the car. On the far side of the backstage door was a velvet rope with about 10 people behind it. The door was open and Coldplay’s equipment was being loaded onto their truck. Just after, Coldplay walked out the door. They looked at the people behind the rope, turned around and saw my friend and I just standing there. They turned to us and walked right up to us and asked if we wanted to have anything signed.

They were incredibly nice and signed multiple items for us. When Will asked me what I’d liked signed I said I didn’t have anything white but my Notre Dame CC hat on my head. He held out a sharpie and said “I’ll sign your hat.” Before I knew it I had the whole band signing their autographs on my hat (which was still on my head.) To this day I’ve never worn that hat again and have hung it on my wall with pride next to my other autographs.
