Chris Martin Voted World's 49th Most Powerful Person, Gwyneth 28th

49. Chris Martin

Voted one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians, the Coldplay front man Chris Martin, 29, may be a rock star (and reputedly worth £25m) but, despite a string of chart-topping albums (including 2005’s bestseller X&Y), he’s not exactly rock’n’roll.

The fact that hummus is his only apparent vice means the redtops moved on to more gossip-worthy pastures long ago.

Even now, with a Hollywood wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Hollywood children (Apple and Moses), he still comes across as a teetotal nerd. Chris’s capital is all earnest philanthro-pop, spiced only with political messages.

28. Gwyneth Paltrow

Once Hollywood’s golden lady, this American blue-blood doesn’t need mass adoration. Since marrying Chris Martin in 2003, Gwyneth has seemed happy to trade the razzle-dazzle for the stability of a loving husband and the role of earth mother to her two children, Apple and Moses.

Over the past four years, her international celebrity has diminished in inverse proportion, one suspects, to her contentment. Yet her bankability remains strong. While some may find her goody-goody image irritating, Estée Lauder made her the face of its perfume Pleasures, precisely because she is the pristine, all-American girl.

With that contract, four films out this year and one scheduled for next year — plus talk of a solo album — expect to see much more of Gwyneth from now on.
