'Endangered: The Story Of Fierce Panda' movie coming through PledgeMusic

The story of much-loved indie label Fierce Panda Recordings will be told in a new movie released via PledgeMusic, it has been revealed this week. Created by Document Films, ‘Endangered: The Story Of Fierce Panda Records’, will be released in February 2014 to tie in with the 20th birthday celebrations of the label. A soundtrack album condensing the best of over 250 Fierce Panda single releases will accompany the film, whilst a retrospective book is also being mulled over.

The film casts a wry glance back at the early days of Coldplay, Placebo, Idlewild, Art Brut, Hundred Reasons, Keane, Kenickie, The Maccabees, Ash, Embrace, Three Colours Red, The Bluetones and many more who came through the fierce panda A&R factory (with a small ‘f’) lo-fi production line. There will be brand new interviews with various artists and funseekers recalling their beginnings along with footage from the archives, including Coldplay's Will Champion

The PledgeMusic campaign launches this week and offers music fans the chance to contribute towards the release of the soundtrack to ‘Endangered: The Story Of Fierce Panda Records,’ alongside a range of ‘Pledge Plus’ premium offers, including a DVD pre-order facility, a range of exclusive merchandise and a chance for fans to have their name in the credits of the both the film and the CD soundtrack release, among a range of other incentives.

“Fierce Panda do things other record companies don’t do, they come at it from a fan perspective, they’re not business people and that’s what allows them to take risks and be creative and to be a bit more out there. It was a huge part of a wider puzzle – a massive stepping stone. It was definitely what got us played on the radio and then got us a headline slot at the Bull and Gate which at the time was the biggest gig we’d ever done.” - Will Champion

At the heart of the film is the notion that small labels such as Fierce Panda are fast becoming an endangered species, battered by illegal downloads, a collapsing retail system, a major label-propelled pop culture and a never ending recession. As fierce panda chief Simon Williams puts it, “Like Santa Claus, the tooth fairy and Eskimos, if the kids don’t believe in us how can we exist?”

Filmming and editing duties are being handled by Document Films, makers of the award-winning Creation documentary Upside Down. Since forming in a Tottenham Court Road pub in 1994 with a business plan to release one record (the ‘Shagging In The Streets’ EP) and then call it a day, Fierce Panda has released material from 60 acts that have moved onto bigger labels, from Art Brut to Winnebago Deal via Coldplay and Keane.
