4. Coldplay, “X&Y” (Capitol): So much potential to be album of the year but too much manicured pondering to make it that far. Chris Martin and Co. became so preoccupied with outdoing U2 — silly boys — that they lost sight of their own strengths. “Fix You” is easily the band’s most majestic song ever and “Square One” skips along an irresistible groove, but much of “X&Y” is like a vapid blonde...

Coldplay - X&Y (EMI) Perhaps Coldplay’s third album would have been better titled with a gigantic question mark. For Chris Martin’s plaintive voice so frequently soars in search of answers – pole-axed by the big conundrums of life, niggled by the smaller ones. Anyone who ever doubted their place in the world could find something here to chime with their own emotions. Love ’em or loathe ’em (and this was the year in which we all assumed one of those two positions) the quality of the work was not to be denied.
