    Coldplay Get "The Fear"

Chris Martin has spoken to Yahoo! Music about the "fear" he's experienced as a father, on the eve of the release of the new Coldplay album "X&Y".

In an exclusive interview, Martin spoke about his daughter Apple and the impact she has had on the music of the band and his relationship with wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

As the band release their comeback single "Speed Of Sound", Martin also revealed the other pressures and inspirations that fuelled the band's follow-up to the globe-conquering "A Rush Of Blood To The Head".

Speaking about fatherhood, Martin explained the affect on "X&Y". "I think being a dad definitely, well, anything that affects your life affects your lyrics. And being a dad definitely affects your life and makes you see everything, I think, in more extreme colour. I worship my daughter. So that's a great source of happiness," he explained. "But, also, you have all this fear about it and all that stuff. And, I mean, everything that happens to us influences our lyrics."

On the subject of the recording of the album, Chris said the band decided to go return to their roots. He said: "We really went back to basics. I think some of the stuff that comes along with being a big band isn't necessarily that healthy for creativity or for your relationship.

"When you start travelling separately, you start being sort of naturally divided. So it took us a while to think well, really we kind of miss each other, and we, and we don't really need all this paraphernalia. We booked out a tiny studio in North London and just went back in there with the most bare of instruments, and rocked. Not rocked, soft rock, we soft rocked."

Elsewhere in the interview, guitarist Jonny Buckland explained the musical influences that had impacted on "X&Y". "We listened to a lot of electronic records while we were making it and before making the album. We got heavily into Kraftwork and Depeche Mode and Yoda."

Martin also gave his verdict on the album, showing his usual mixture of uncertainty and bashfulness. "I think we're far too close to it to know if it's our best work yet. Every parent, when they take their kid to school, secretly thinks that their kid is the best. Ours might be the one that actually is the troublemaker and not very good at all…"
