Coldplay's new innovation: Flashing wristbands for the MX tour

wristbandmadrid1a.JPGWith the banks in crisis Coldplay have found a decent way to keep their fortune safe – becoming the music world's answer to telly's Dragons' Den, writes The Sun, in an article featuring the business models that the band have chasing recently.

The band have already given cash to a feature film about the The Stone Roses' Spike Island gig. Now they've invested in a Devon-based electronics firm RB Concepts. Entrepreneurs Clive Banks and Jason Regler approached the group after coming up with a flashing wristband that can be used for audience interaction at gigs.

The company approached the band, who said they would like to try the wristbands out during the launch of their latest album, Mylo Xyloto, in Madrid. The LED wristbands were handed out to members of the crowd at last week’s live event and lit up during the band’s first song as part of a world ‘first’ interactive experience. “It was a huge challenge to design, manufacture and deliver 17,000 wristbands at very short notice, but we are now working with the hottest act on the planet,” said Mr Banks.

The new technology aims to increase audience participation at live events. He said: “The big thing is audience participation and this means bands can relate more to the audience. It means there is a lot more audience participation, as opposed to it being static.”

RB Concepts boss Clive said: "It is huge to be working with Coldplay. The next move would be to have the wristbands at sporting events and night time events. The big thing is audience participation, this means bands can relate more to the audience. We are looking towards using it at the Olympics."

Not only that, according to an article on the same subject written by the UK's Midweek Herald, "Coldplay will be unveiling something even more innovative when they begin their European tour next month." No idea what that might be. Any guesses? Let us know in the Coldplay forum now! [thanks Skuze23, _Tash & Jason-DeBord]

The Madrid concert - which was held at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas - kicked off Coldplay's European tour and saw them perform a set which showcased songs from new album 'Mylo Xyloto' as well as their extensive back catalogue. The band are also celebrating after making iTunes chart history, with 'Mylo Xyloto' setting the record for the highest first week album sales ever on the music downloading service's worldwide stores.
