For some, it's the skull ring he wears on one of his recent albums that gives him away. For others, it's the guitar pick that ranchera singer Pepe Aguilar uses to play the metal strings on his instrument.
It's a subtle yet striking detail for an artist who appears on the covers of his album dressed as a charro, surrounded by mariachis, horses and tequila. The truth is, this singer has a rock 'n' roll soul.
Sure, Aguilar can talk for hours about ranchera music, especially about his famous parents, ranchera icon Antonio Aguilar and legendary actress Flor Silvestre. But it's when he talks about rock, especially about such bands as Rush, Pink Floyd or System of a Down, that excitement truly takes over.
"Pink Floyd is the real deal," said the 35-year-old Grammy-winning singer. "The last album by (Argentine rock-pop singer) Gustavo Cerati was awesome, and so was (Mexican hip-hop group) Control Machete's. But I really like Coldplay. Wow, it's been a long time since I heard such a cool band."
