Coldplay and Gorillaz are hours away from hearing if one of them has won the most prizes at the MTV Europe Awards.
The two bands lead the nods with five apiece - three in the same category - including best group and best song. Live acts in Portugal will include Robbie Williams, Green Day, and Madonna who will give the first live TV performance of her new single Hung Up. Coldplay will also perform.
The Lisbon ceremony is hosted by Ali G creator Sacha Baron Cohen, playing his alter ego Kazakhstani Borat Sagdiyev. Presenters at the awards will include Sugababes, actress Brittany Murphy and Portuguese football star Luis Figo.
Gwen Stefani has four nominations for best female, best pop act, best album for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, and best video for What You Waiting For?
As well as best group, Coldplay are in the running for the for best rock act, best song for Speed Of Sound, best album for X&Y, and best UK and Ireland act.
They will go head-to-head with U2 in the three categories they are nominated in - best group, best rock act, and best album for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
Gorillaz add best song and best video - both for Feel Good Inc - best pop act, and best UK and Ireland act to their nod for best group.
The cartoon band, created by Blur's Damon Albarn, will use hologram-style technology to beam three-dimensional performing cartoon characters on stage.
Hip-hop artist 50 Cent has nominations for best male, best hip-hop act and best album for The Massacre.
US rockers Green Day earn nominations in the best group, best rock and best album for their chart-topping latest album American Idiot.
For the first time, the awards will include a category for best African act, with 2 Face, Kaysha, Kleptomaniax, 02 and Zamajobe in the running.
