Madonna, the queen of pop herself, kicked off the MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 in style by emerging from a giant glitterball amid an army of hunks to perform her latest single Hung Up. Clad in a purple leather jacket and, er, not much else she whipped the crowd in Lisbon into a frenzy, and one lucky member of the audience walked home with her sunglasses after she hurled them into the crowd.
Host Borat Sagdiyev then took to the stage, perhaps immediately breaking up a longstanding friendship with Madonna by labelling her a “transvestite”. Let’s hope black belt Guy Ritchie wasn’t watching…
First up was the Best Album award and Green Day fought off competition from the likes of 50 Cent and Coldplay to snatch the prestigious gong.
Best Pop quickly followed, with Sugababes on hand to present the award. The Black Eyed Peas scooped the gong, with Gorillaz and Gwen Stefani among the disappointed.
Following an electric performance from Coldplay, Snoop Dogg walked away with the Best Hip-Hop award. The ever-controversial Pussycat Dolls – who in the build up to the ceremony said they would like to snog Madonna – then performed their massive hit Don’t Cha.
But it was already starting to look like Green Day’s night when the punk rockers returned to the stage to collect the Best Rock award.
An extraordinary feat of technology then saw Gorillaz take to the stage as frighteningly realistic 3-D animations to perform Feel Good Inc. De La Soul joined the animations in a set that left the audience open-mouthed.
Akon was the next live act on, with System of a Down picking up the Best Alternative award after his performance. Craig David then stepped up to present the Best R&B gong, but was left disappointed when winner Alicia Keys delivered her thank-you speech via a video message.
Chemical Brothers nabbed the Best Video gong from under the noses of Gorillaz and Beck, among others. Super-smooth John Legend was on hand next to hand over Best Female to a surprised Shakira.
A serious incident involving Borat stealing Chris Martin’s trousers, then trying to sell them back to the Coldplay frontman then ensued. For the sake of common decency the less said about this the better.
Robbie Williams then took to the stage to blast out his new single Tripping, and a brave stage dive saw his adoring fans practically rip the clothes off his back.
The Free Your Mind award was then presented to Sir Bob Geldof by Madonna. She made an impassioned speech before handing over to Sir Bob – who went on to call for an end to world poverty.
Borat’s highlight of the night was next as the President of Kazakhstan appeared on stage. One unfortunate member of the audience who refused to remain silent (out of respect, naturally) was dragged up and spanked by the host.
After a performance of My Humps by The Black Eyed Peas the irrepressible Robbie Williams took home Best Male, presented to him by Tatu. Fellow Brit James Blunt then picked up the gong for Best New Act.
Borat continued to wreak havoc during Foo Fighters’ set, crawling across stage behind the band. Dave Grohl interrupted DOA to ask him what he was doing and Borat explained he was lost. Ever the professionals, the Foos carried on and finished the track.
Coldplay were finally recognised for their massive track Speed of Sound, picking up Best Single. Shakira then sizzled onstage, exciting frenzied reactions from her male fans. Shortly after Chris Martin and the boys were honoured for a second time, winning Best UK & Ireland Act.
But of course the biggest, the baddest, the phattest category on the night was Best Group. In the running were Coldplay, Green Day, The Black Eyed Peas and U2. But in the end there could be only one winner and it was… Gorillaz. Accepting the award alongside De La Soul, co-creator Jamie Hewlett said: “They're the best group, and they don’t even exist!”
