Ink - Catchy, fun and upbeat!
For next article in the series, after we looked back at the rise of first single from Ghost Stories, Magic and Guy's creative brilliance, we move on to one of the more uplifting tracks from Coldplay's new album, Ink. The highly rated third song from Ghost Stories has a fun side to it that contrasts to the tracks that proceed it within the album. Catchy, fun and upbeat, Ink summarized in a few words.
Ink is reminiscent to Strawberry Swing in the build of the song and the popularity. Strawberry Swing was popular from the beginning but it wasn't seen as a focal point within Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, that was until the relaxing and upbeat tune was sealed as a fan favourite as it grew more and more with many fans over the course of the era and was eventually a radio only single with an
As a single choice, it was thought to be the next release after current single, A Sky Full of Stars. Coldplay opted for True Love, with Ink possibly becoming the band's fourth single from Ghost Stories if they decide to continue with the promotion of their latest album, most likely in the new year of 2015.
The mysterious track from Ghost Stories
Ink ended up being the most mysterious track from Ghost Stories, with the studio or the live version not being heard in public until the actual official iTunes stream was made available a week before the global release of Coldplay's new album! The same could be said about True Love, for those who didn't listen to the live version at Beacon Theatre, New York, which was leaked in low quality after the gig.
A handful of lucky fans did hear Ink live a long time before the eventual iTunes stream. The venue was the secret show in LA, which was the location of the Ghost Stories film. Reactions to the song were interesting to say the least! It was described as a 'Coldplay classic' with 'upbeat' and 'Chris on acoustic guitar' mentioned frequently with Ink usually listed as one of the favourites from the show by delighted fans who could only share their experience in written form.
The mysterious cloak surrounding Ink began to unravel when Coldplay revealed an official lyrics hunt on their Facebook and Twitter page, sparking a worldwide hunt for clued up fans! The lyrics for Ink were found by a Coldplayer called Courtney, in a libary within Johannesburg, South Africa
The lyrics were generally praised as one of the best off Ghost Stories, while the opening two lines, starting with "Got a tattoo that said '2gether thru life", did not receive the greatest reception on the Coldplaying forums!
Live highlights
Ink has been played sporadically over the Ghost Stories intimate shows, with the first live appearance outside of the secret shows being in the same place once more, in Los Angeles, that time at the Royce Hall on 19th May, the day of the album release.
The highlight, was no doubt, the magical arena where the guys jammed away to the potential fan favourite. This is part of the Ghost Stories film, aired in multiple countries around the world, originally filmed towards the end of March at the Los Angeles secret show. The screens, which were largely part of the $4 million Coldplay spent constructing the 360 degree stage, beamed a beautiful pattern of the stage and stars surrounding the arena, it was truly a brilliant moment!
