Coldplay's Oracle on Red Rocks, Parachutes, MX clothes, following the Twitterati, Hannover, stage times and more...

oracle.jpgMore questions answered by The Oracle... (circa. 2900 questions now answered - submit yours now!)

September 6, 2012 - submitted by Sam, United States of America

    Q. Dear Oracle, I was wondering if the names of the songs in the parachutes album, were chosen to sort of show someones thought while skydiving for example, or on a less literal scale, doing something that they're nervous about. Please let me know I'm quite curious. Thanks

    The Oracle replies:

There wasn't a deliberate pre-planned theme to the Parachutes album even if the songs' contents seem linked. The time scale between the writing of the first to last song is so vast that it's merely coincidence that they appear to allude to similar subjects - though not unusual if we look at Chris' writing historically. The title definitely represents the feeling they had prior to releasing their debut album. When they were deciding upon a name, they decided it summed it up perfectly.

September 6, 2012 - submitted by Tiffani, United States of America

    Q. Dear Oracle, I was wondering has the band ever played in a place? Like Maybe The Eiffel Tower, or Grand Canyon? Somwehere unique? If so where? And one more question, What Region is Coldplay from?

    The Oracle replies:

Yeah, they played during torrential rain at Red Rocks back in 2003, that's by far the most unique place they've done a show. They weren't the first band to perform there though...

September 5, 2012 - submitted by Brett, United States of America

    Q. Dear Oracle, I'm a huge fan of the band and their music videos, and I know there isn't one for Moving to Mars, but I remember a long time ago watching a trailer for Mat Whitecross' documentary Moving to Mars. The song Moving to Mars was playing throughout the video. Is that video still around or did it get pulled? That was quite a surreal experience watching the video with the song and I was hoping it was still around! Thanks, Brett

    The Oracle replies:

That 'video' doesn't appear to be around these days and as you said, there isn't an official video for the song. Did you know Mat's documentary Moving to Mars opened Sheffield's 2009 DocFest in Novemeber a good two years before Mylo Xyloto was out?

September 5, 2012 - submitted by Rowan, United Kingdom

    Q. Hello dear Oracle, Do the boys ever get tired of wearing their tour clothes? I noticed that they wear the same type of MX clothing on stage and for red carpet/public events. Just wondering if they ever have a day where they're like "hey, let me wear my favorite band t-shirt for once." Cheers! Rowan

    The Oracle replies:

No, they don't wear that garb the entire time; they only wear them for work / band related appearances. They don't travel to the shows wearing anything like that either so don't worry - it's all for "show" and they wear their own clothes the rest of the time.

September 5, 2012 - submitted by Marcos, Brazil

    Q. Why @coldplay stop follow your fans? Well.. We in Brazil are so sad, because they don't follow us.

    The Oracle replies:

Sorry about that but I'm sure you can appreciate the impact of trying to follow 8,226,207 people!

September 4, 2012 - submitted by Wafa, France

    Q. Dear Oracle, I am sorry to tell you that you are mistaken about Paradise performed twice in Paris. I was actually at this concert and Paradise has been performed twice. I am sure of it, I have it on video. Please try to correct your answer to Mimi. She is actually right.

    The Oracle replies:

Er, I did! Yesterday! And I explained why...

September 4, 2012 - submitted by Alex, United Kingdom

    Q. Dear Oracle, On the Coldplay twitter account it shows they follow Sunderland, Man City and Arsenal. Who supports who?

    The Oracle replies:

That's not why those teams are followed; they're followed because of their venues where the band have played on tour.

September 4, 2012 - submitted by Jasmin, Germany

    Q. Dear Oracle, today you answered a question from Tabea and you said there will be concerts in Cologne, Leipzig and Munich. You forgot Hanover which in fact is the nearest "Coldplay-Concert-City" from Husum. Greetings from Hanover :P Can't wait for the 22nd of September!

    The Oracle replies:

Ooh yes, Hanover (aka Hannover) is the last night of this leg of the tour, I forgot all about that! Thanks, Jasmin.

September 4, 2012 - submitted by Tomas, Slovakia

    Q. Dearest Oracle, I'm going to go to the Coldplay gig in Prague in a couple of days. I've heard that Coldplay has changed the times they come on stage...I've been searching all over the internet, but could not find anything relevant. When do the doors open and when does Coldplay start? Please help. Thank you very very much! :)

    The Oracle replies:

We've been announcing the stage times on our Twitter page so it's best to check there on the day.

September 3, 2012 - submitted by Adam, United States of America

    Q. What is the name of the epic classical song that plays right as Coldplay comes on stage? It's kind of the best!

    The Oracle replies:

It's from the 1985 film Back to the Future (one of Chris' favourite films). The film was scored by Alan Silvestri and this is its theme music.

September 3, 2012 - submitted by Celine, Denmark

    Q. Q. Hi Oracle. I read down below that Coldplay's fifth member (better known as Phil Harvey) also was in Paradise video. Since that, have I really tried to find him in the video. Thinks I need a little help. Thank you. Celine

    The Oracle replies:

He was one of the zoo keepers running after the escaping elephant. The other chap is Tim Crompton who you will no doubt have heard of over the years. Here's one example yet he is totally playing down his history!

September 3, 2012 - submitted by Tabea, Germany

    Q. Dearest Oracle, My friend Marina is a big Coldplay fan. She lives in Husum in Germany and I wanted to know if Coldplay comes one day for a concert to Husum or Hamburg or to a town near there. A huge thank you :-) Tabea.

    The Oracle replies:

The European tour has started and although there are 3 dates in Germany in the next two weeks, they're not all that close to Husum. I'm not sure if you'd be able to get any tickets at such short notice but they're playing Cologne tomorrow, Munich on the 12th and Leipzig on the 14th.

September 3, 2012 - submitted by Mimi, Sweden

    Q. Hey!! Last week at the show in Sweden, Coldplay performed Paradise twice (to my delight) and said that the second performance would air on SU2C, which was so cool!! But I just read online that they performed twice last night in Paris too, also for SU2C... Why is that? Please don't say that the Sweden show won't air?

    The Oracle replies:

    * EDITED: I was at the Paris show last night but as we did a runner (leave the venue before the end of the show), 'we' didn't get to see anything after Fix You. We knew about Umbrella being performed but I hadn't heard a word about Paradise getting a second play. Apologies. The band did play PoC twice too so it seems Paris had quite a few treats. MY PREVIOUS ANSWER WAS: I think you are mistaken, Mimi. The band performed Princess of China twice last night - not Paradise. It wasn't for the same reason either.

August 31, 2012 - submitted by Elle, United Kingdom

    Q. Dear Oracle, Life In Technicolour is one of my all time favourite Coldplay songs. I have always wondered why the track on the album Viva La Vida doesn't have lyrics it is just an instrumental track? However the music video is a full version complete with lyrics. Is there a reason for this? Thank you very much for answering my question, Elle.

    The Oracle replies:

Life in Technicolor and Life in Technicolor ii are two different songs. Part ii is the lyric version that was released as a single (from the Prospekt's March EP) and therefore a video was made.

August 31, 2012 - submitted by Nils, Germany

    Q. Hello Oracle, as I read through the recent questions I learned the band arrives at the venue just before the show and are leaving before anyone else does. On the upcoming european leg of the tour there are always 1 or 2 days between two shows. So what do the boys do between the shows? Sightseeing? Thanks for answering :-) Nils

    The Oracle replies:

The band go home after each show as they all have families that they want to spend time with. Travelling back after a show means they will be there in the morning to have breakfast and do the school run etc. Even when they are further afield, they don't have much time for sightseeing these days.

August 31, 2012 - submitted by Lizzie, United Kingdom

    Q. Dearest Oracle, I have an awkward problem. I've lost about 10lbs since breaking up with my boyfriend a month ago (just emotional stuff). It's kind of a big deal since I was already smallish. The real problem, however, is my friend who teases me about my weight. She is overweight, but not overly, but she makes comments about how I'm too skinny, and I'm not sure how to handle the situation. Do you have any pointers as to what I can say to her? Cheers,

    The Oracle replies:

The "heartbreak diet" can't be helped. I'm afraid your friend is probably a little envious at you losing weight (sorry, but that's what I truly think) so if I were you I would just explain that it's not your choice. If you tell her that you'd rather not be going through the pain & suffering let alone the weight loss but ask that she please refrain from making you feel more sad at this difficult time. That should do the trick!
