Band Progress

Featured Replies

Hey everyone!

Kinda just wanted to ask some people for their opinion on the progress of Coldplay. Starting with Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head, I think they had a great start. I loved their first two albums, great tune and melody. X&Y was good too but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two, to this day I consider it their weakest so far. I though Viva La Vida was another great CD, especially for a CD that I see as an experiment album. So far I've been a fan since 2000 and to this day I consider them a really influential band to me.

But lately I feel that Coldplay is beginning to shift to a more mainstream audience, and this concerns me a little. And these rumors that that Coldplay is to tour with Miley Cyrus, and to be quiet honest I dislike her a lot! So I'm against it. Then the whole plagiarism law suit with Satriani. Makes me feel that lately the band is going downhill.

I don't mean to insult anyone or make a flame thread, I would really like some constructive criticism. But anyone else feel a little out-of-place with the possible figure of the band? I do admit that no band is perfect, and I don't expect the world from Coldplay. Yet, it would really disappoint me to see Coldplay sell out to mainstream media.

Like I said, I would really like to see some opinions on how you folks feel about the band. Happy posting and thanks in advance!

First off. those Miley Cyrus rumors are just that...rumors. Don't believe everything you read.;)

Second, the Satch lawsuit is a complete joke. If there are any similarities between the songs it is due to the fact that musically it is a very common chord progression and the melody is one that fits. There have been at least 5 other songs found that sound more like Satch's song. Songs that were released BEFORE SATCH'S. The man has no case, Coldplat are not plagiarists.

Finally, how you see the band is completely up to you. Personally I think they have gone farther from "pop" lately. If you look at X&Y's Fix You, Speed of Sound, Talk, and The Hardest Part, they ring out with more "pop" thn VLV's Violet Hill, Cemeteries of London, and Yes. They have naturally progressed and it seems to me have strayed farther from "pop" to a more experimental sound.

I love Coldplay but im not really loving the sound that theya re doing right now.....and i agree that they seem to be going to the more mainstream audience and just try to make something that sells,IMO VLV is more pop than X&Y...and its really funny cause you know how Chris said that he wanted to make something that wouldnt make 16 year olds get crap from people cause they listen to them....well IMO i think people get more crap because of VLV than their older stuff..

I think thats why i keep loving Radiohead more and more cause they are filling that void that Coldplay couldnt fill cause Coldplays muisc now is more pop...

A great band illustrates the ability to reinvent themselves. I don't think any of the members think much about being pop or mainstream. They even said time and time during this album's release that they felt perfect musical freedom in what they were doing, unobligated to use the same old tricks, or to avoid trying strange new things.

And while X&Y was their "poppiest" album, it was still very brave and quite a long stretch from what they did with AROBTTH. There was nothing particularly safe or compromising about it. And if anything the music and guitar arrangements were more complex than before (see Square One, Talk, X&Y, Speed of Sound, Low, The Hardest Part, Twisted Logic...), who would've thought that a couple years after live 2003, Kraftwerk would play a primary influence in their next album?

And right after they explode to massive popularity, and everyone thinks they've figured out what all coldplay songs will now sound like (safe, synthy, falsetto driven pop songs of the like of clocks/SOS) they come back with the the gritty, pounding rocker that is violet Hill. And while Coldplay injects a certain degree of pop sensibility into all their songs, VLV is a diverse compilation of original and different sounding songs, none of which've would've fit on X&Y. Try comparing any 3 consecutive songs, and notice the stark differences. Viva la vida - Violet Hill - Strawberry swing, LIT - COL - Lost!, or Reign of love - Yes - CSC. Except for the fact that Chris sings in each song, they're all completely different(and that's not even including 42).

In between album's it's easy to fall under the illusion that the band has become stagnant, that they we've reached the end of their musical progression and fresh material with it. If X&Y had been "AROBTTH part 2", some may have enjoyed it more, but they wouldn't be half as great or successful as they are now (same if VLV had been X&Y part 2) .

I think VLV is a prime example that the band gets bored very fast, and so they'll never fail to surprise us with unexpected new things. Of course they'll never pull a Kid A, but that's simply comes back down to the band's general taste in music. That doesn't mean they aren't experimental, as VLV is a much braver album than say Parachutes. And I promise whatever they do next, it will be as distinctly different as everyone of their album's has been from the one before it.

youve said what i wanted to say(:

i don't know! i love them! i love all their songs which includes the ep's and b-sides. the fact that they are more mainstream doesn't matter at all. i say good for them they are attracting more fans and who doesn't want that as a band? i mean if they weren't attracting new people then the old fans would tire of them eventually. but i think they are not necessarily getting better because they aren't bad. they are getting better because they are experimenting with new sounds. if they made like 10 fix you's i would die. so yes they are getting better but not because they were ever bad!

I love Coldplay but im not really loving the sound that theya re doing right now.....and i agree that they seem to be going to the more mainstream audience and just try to make something that sells,IMO VLV is more pop than X&Y...

I don't understand why you say that. I mean, I see why you may not care much for the sound, but when you break down VLV it's neither safe nor blatantly mainstream compared to their other albums. Coldplay confuses one's notions of pop music because they are a very popular band. But how many songs can you think of that sound like Viva la vida? The album sells because it's a great collection of music. Nothing on the album is quite like anything they've done before.

and its really funny cause you know how Chris said that he wanted to make something that wouldnt make 16 year olds get crap from people cause they listen to them....well IMO i think people get more crap because of VLV than their older stuff..

Maybe, Chris will always be Chris, but he also said that he values choruses that can be sung from the rafters, he just wanted to present it differently. And IMO that's succeeded. Their standard of music quality hasn't fluxtuated in the past 9 years. Yes is no more or less accessible than Daylight. (or strawberry swing - green eyes, Lovers in Japan - Clocks, Violet Hill - Politik etc. Viva la Vida - In My Place etc. etc.)

I think thats why i keep loving Radiohead more and more cause they are filling that void that Coldplay couldnt fill cause Coldplays muisc now is more pop...

Well, Coldplay has always been more accessible than Radiohead, I'm only saying it's a natural difference the two bands have always had, and not the result of Coldplay wanting to sell more C.D.'s or writing any music contrary to what they truly enjoy hearing and performing.

Personally I think wtih VLV they really came into their own. I like X&Y but listing to it out you can see that the recorded an album which they thought they need to record as a big band.

VLV is in mind def. neither a pop or a mainstream record, this album could gone horrible wrong for them if it wouldn't have been any good.

Parachutts and Rush are brillant brillant albums but nothing worst then when a band tries with every album to repeat what they did 10 years ago!

Personally I love their attitude they like the music they like no matter what genre, and this is exactly how music should be listen to.

Too many people in the world won't listen to certain artist just because they are pop, rock etc. But you should listen to music which is good no matter from which genre.

Right now I do looking forward what they will do next!
