Detroit rules in "Coachella," a concert movie compendium of performances from the six years that the Coachella Music & Arts Festival has thrown up its many tents in Indio, Calif.   With Tennessee's Bonnaroo given more to jam bands, and the Burning Man preoccupied with personal expression rather than rawk-and-rawl, it's left to Coachella to carry the torch -- sometimes literally -- for the music itself.   In a film that's not short on fine performances, the two best come from the reunited Sto

Coldplay's "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" was the top-selling album worldwide in 2008, industry figures showed Monday. The group's fourth studio album sold 6.8 million units worldwide, said the London-based International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents the recording industry worldwide.   "Viva La Vida" sold more downloads than any other album in digital history within a month of release, the IFPI said. Earlier this month, Coldplay, who describe their

Coldplay is to allow one of its songs to be used for an advertisement for the first time.   The band, led by Chris Martin, who is married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow, has steadfastly refused to allow its music to be used for marketing purposes so far. However, it is now permitting charity Cancer Research UK to use the song “Fix You” on a forthcoming campaign.   Paltrow’s father, the director and producer Bruce Paltrow, died in 2002 of pneumonia and complications associated with a recurrence of ca

Taking the stage as the last billed performance after Justin Beiber and Ariana Grande's rousing "Love Me Harder", Coldplay delivered one surprise after another. The band strolled out to a crowd riled into a frenzy chanting "Manchester", following an unexpected video montage of musicians declaring their solidarity with the city. Grande came out with the band some 2:35:00 minutes into the 3-hour show.   All predictions as to the setlist were only partially right. Then again, no one could have see

LONDON — In 2002, Chris Martin [pictured] went to Haiti. What he saw there — proud-yet-poor people facing overwhelming odds — has remained with him ever since. And it's made watching the footage streaming out of the earthquake-ravaged nation over the past few days even more difficult.   "I went there to do a project with Fair Trade, so I was on about 15 farms in Haiti, and Port-au-Prince, these places you're seeing on the news," Martin said. "Sometimes when you see things like this on the news,

Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof announced on Tuesday that he has organized a star-studded sequel to the landmark 1985 concerts that raised hundreds of millions of dollars for famine relief in Africa. But this time, Geldof said he's interested in raising awareness instead of money.   Instead of two shows, though, Geldof has lined up five shows for the July 2 Live 8 event to shine a spotlight on the issue of poverty in the developing world. Among the stars on board are U2, Mariah Carey, Coldplay and
