Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
Ive heard of Satriani though Ive never listened to his music. I think the bottom line is Satriani has a case. The songs are similiar and not just a couple seconds as some have said, the songs rhythm and melody run similiar througout and the lead's also run similiar in many parts. Anyone not using extreme bias towards coldplay see's that and will admit it. However the problem is, as others have stated, there is so much music today that there are going to be songs that sound like others, its just impossible for that not to happen. I'm a big coldplay fan, a very big music fan of current and old music, especially rock music of all kinds. Personally I dont see how this can be a total coincidence, the songs are too similiar to me, but even thinking that I know that anything is possible and how can you prove that it wasnt a coincidence? I doubt Coldplay flat out ripped him off, I believe they would have given credit to him, they dont seem like those types of guys, but none of us really know them well or personally. I think that somehow the Satriani song influenced them while coming up with and then recording the song and that made it so the song came out very similiar.

I cant believe the biased bashing of both Satriani and Coldplay, you all come off like trolls, coldplay fans bashing Satriani included. Satriani believes his song was ripped off whether he is right or wrong it is what he believes and every one of us would be upset at that. And for those so biased they are even denying the songs are similiar, you are coming off as coldplay groupies and not music fans. It's obvious the songs are very similiar, the rhythm, the melody and even the lead. That however does not mean plagiarism, it is a hell of a coincidence but it is possible. Coldplay may have also been influenced by the song and didnt even notice the close similiarity, another possibiity, or maybe they did rip off the song, another possibility. I just find it hard to believe if they did use the song that they wouldnt give credit. Coldplay may settle out of court, who knows. It's a great song though whether it was plagiarized or not.

I would just stop feeding the troll. Honestly you sound no better than him when youre blasting a guy who is obviously a great musician who just believes he was ripped off. I understand the troll is getting you fired up, but responding to him and basically getting into a "he sucks because" battle is lame.

I agree about the troll part. Buckland is a completely ifferent type of guitarist than Satriani is. I dont even know Satrianis music but he is very widely respected and considered one of the best guiatarists ever. Complaring Buckland and Satriani is dumb because Buckland is mostly a rhythm guitarist type of player over a lead style. The fact is the songs melodies and some of leads sound very similiar, whether by accident or influence or plagiarism. Like I said before there had been so much music that it is impossible for songs not to sound alike. I'm not mad at Satriani though, the guy may honestly believe he has been ripped off without credit, I dont think we should bash him, but I also dont think coldplay should be bashed until we know the facts.

From what I have read about Satriani he is successful, I admit Ive never listened to him but I have heard the name, he supposedly is one of the greatest guitrists ever. He does successful tours around the world and his albums seem to sell well. Is he as successful as coldplay, no, but not many musicians are. Does he just want to get paid? Maybe, but how do you know he doesnt honestly believe he should be paid for plagiarism? I think you need to put your bias aside. The songs sound very similiar, I was actually a bit shocked when I listened to the Satriani song, I didnt listen to the comparison video, I know viva la vida well enough that I didnt have to, I just listened to the satriani song all the way through. The question will be whether Coldplay meant it or it is just a coincidence. It's really hard to be believe the song was not some kind of influence when listened to but anything is possible. I think many coldplay fans are upset, but to say the songs dont sound alike or there is no possible way Coldplay could have plagiarized someone are just being completely biased. I picked a great time to join.

Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
I hope I dont get flamed on in my first post here because I am very glad I found this forum to discuss coldplay with other fans. I hate to say it but Satriani does have a case in my opinion. I dont listen to Satriani at all but when I heard about this I listened to the song he claimed was ripped off on You Tube and they are more than a little similair. The melody and rhythm sounds alike and even the lead guitar sounds like Martin's vocals at points. The thing is that it is not the 70's anymore, there is a lot of music and millions of songs in music history now, and it is going to be impossible for there not to be songs made that sound similair to others. The question is whether it was done on purpose or not and that may never be known. The thing is if it was not done on purpose what can be done about it? Should a credit on the song be given to Satirani? Should he be payed for plagiarism? If I thought my music was used and credit was not given I would be upset as well, I dont think we should be mad at Satriani. I'm sorry I don't agree with most in this thread it looks like and hopefully am not hated right off the bat here for disagreeing, but I dont see how you cant hear the similarity in the two songs. Another famous plagiarism case in music was when George Harrison was sued because the Chiffons thought his great song "My Sweet Lord" was ripped off from their hit song "He's so Fine." I'm only 28 so I wasnt around when this happened but I love old music as well as new and listened to the two, at first I didnt think there was any similiarty at all, but as I learned more about music and the melody of music I do see the similiarity. It's all about the melody or rhythm of a song that these songs sound similiar, The Chiffons won that case and I would say the similiarity of Viva la Vida and the Satriani song is on the same level. That lawsuit was decades ago though and Im not sure if Satriani can win a lawsuit now, also Coldplay an him may settle out of court. Im sure whether Coldplay meant it or not they see the similiarity's between the songs.
