What 20th-century physicist should we name our cat after?
Haha I haven't yet but my friend told me what was in it. :P I guess it's somewhat related to that episode, but I've always wanted to name a pet after a scientist. I heard about it and my friend said Claus Fuchs was in it and I was like OMG WAS HE THE NAUGHTY CAT??? cuz Fuchs was a Soviet spy, but he said he didn't know... the joke would have been perfect if he was D:

I'm leaning toward Feynman but my dad wants to call her Fermi. She's a stray that we think was dumped and keeps rubbing up against us obsessively and purring and she's so damn cute we may adopt her. Nobody suggest Schrödinger, please. Such a corny name for a cat.

Yeah, take a hiatus and see how you feel. I feel like it's the best thing in your situation.

Well, just make sure you do a lot of reflection before you decide to re-commit, or quit for that matter. For a long time I fooled myself into thinking that I still loved swimming even though I totally didn't... just think really hard about it. I'm not sure if you do or not, so don't jump to quit because of what anybody here's saying, just make sure you really think.

Do not get into that mindset. Quitting running doesn't make you a failure, at all. Quitting something you don't love anymore is generally the best and most mature thing to do. Focus your attention on something else, on something you actually like. Particularly if you have something you want to focus energy on besides running, telling your parents you want to focus on that rather than running may go over better than you think; I don't know your parents though so I can't be sure.

Well in physics you don't have an axiomatic system, if that's what you mean. You still plug stuff into equations and study equations and manipulate them and so forth. And if you're an actual physicist you try to create equations that accurately describe the world. And I don't know what you mean by pictures, real physicists don't really draw pictures, except for Feynman diagrams.

Take a while off practice to contemplate what you really want to do. If you still want to run, absence makes the heart grow fonder. If you don't, you'll realize it and make the decision to just not come back.

Mark's actually so right here, well done. At a certain point with most things in life you just get burned out and realize you want to move on with your life. I'm not saying you're necessarily at that point right now but absolutely don't rule it out; like I said I tried quitting swimming once and the months in between my almost quitting and when I really did quit were some of the worst months of my life. It's painful but you have to do a lot of debating with yourself about why you're really there and why you do it and what you love to do besides running, et cetera. It takes a lot of personal searching.

Running woes
Like with me and swimming. I eventually realized I had better things to do than petty competition with people who were more athletic than me and after almost quitting once and coming back eventually just broke it off at the end of the season. I'm so glad I did. For a long while I had something of an identity crisis like you're having, though.

Based on what I know of you? Physics, because physics is so mathematical and ordered and you seem to like that a lot. MIT is so great because of so many reasons I can't even start to talk about them, narrow it down a bit. Great in terms of what specifically? :P

Physics is beautiful :wacky: Well yeah there are other schools but MIT is kind of the golden standard for me.

Yes. A lot. I am gonna be hardcore depressed when I get rejected. :p I've actually got As in every class so far through epic work, except Physics, cuz I did kind of poorly on the first test. That's sort of sad cuz physics is my favorite thing ever >.>

Haha okay. Gravity is what all mass does to all other mass and makes mass comes closer cuz it bends space-time n shit. You're probably familiar with it. It gives weight to stuff. Electricity is the stuff in lights, so it encompasses the behavior of light as well. Light and electricity behave really similarly. Magnetism attracts things with opposite charges and repels things with the same charges. Magnetism can be unified with it mathematically so they can be thought of as the same thing. It's way more powerful than gravity but we don't tend to think of it that way because most things are electrically neutral (equal amounts of positive and negative charges) so there isn't much net charge so the electromagnetic force doesn't act very powerfully between them. Additionally cuz the Earth is quite big and we don't have a magnet that big. Traditionally the weak nuclear force is another one but it's more recently been united with electromagnetism into the electroweak force. The weak nuclear force causes decay in atoms and is the source of radioactivity. It isn't actually weak. It's just weaker than the strong nuclear force. The strong nuclear force is the force that overcomes gravity to keep the electrically charged bits of atoms together. It's very strong at close ranges (really close ranges) but basically can't be detected at larger ranges. So in a way it isn't particularly strong, as we deal with it in our everyday lives. But without it every little bit of us would go splattering all across the universe so it actually is pree strong.

Cuz I like learning, and I thought when I signed up I would be learning a lot more than I actually am and also working a lot less than I actually am. It looks really good to colleges though, so even if I had known what I was really in for I think I would have signed up for it. And I'm clever so I'm better equipped for it than a lot of my friends, so I don't have that much right to complain I guess.

Probably. In most places it's only offered at rich private schools though. I'm lucky to be able to take it at my school. :nice:

You're cosplaying?? AS ENVY ADAMS/RAMONA FLOWERS??? I LOVE YOU I may have made a balloon car in like elementary school or something, but not as far as I can remember. Btw I have a shittton of homework but I've barely done any, and I don't know where most of my weekend's gone, wtf? >.>
