  1. Ok. I have found my interpretation of the meaning of this song to be quite intriguing and exciting! I totally believe Chris Martin, in addition to being a fantastic artist, is indeed.......a Spy! Spy agencies, or organizations, put some applicants who would be potential spies, or "shepherds", (as they are sometimes referred to), through rigorous testing, before one is ever "officially" contacted by a representative(s) of said organization, for the purposes of gleaning, as accurately as is possible, an assessment of a potential spy's measure of held loyalty, honesty, patriotism, etc. Obviously one cannot glean "accurate and authentic" test results, with these specific "in the field" tests, if the subject is officially aware that he or she is indeed being "tested and evaluated". Not every applicant is tested in this way, however the applicants that are tested, or pre-screened in this manner, are those who the agency feels have the ability and potential to not only work as a spy, but to do so at the "highest level" within the agency, or "program". The testing is extremely stressful, and the level of stress increases, the longer the "testing period" lasts. This type of testing of some applicants can last up to and past one year. Of course it is not very stressful in the beginning, but once the subject realizes that they are indeed being "evaluated", and as the tests increase in difficulty and in duration, the stress can be "off the chain". When I say "realizes", I do not mean a "factual knowledge", but rather a "soul knowledge", meaning that the number of all the testing situations eventually becomes so great , (and increasingly bold), to the degree that the idea that it is all just "coincidence", is eventually smashed; the applicant "knows" he or she is being tested. However, he or she must keep that realization to themselves, as an overt "confrontation" of an "examiner" in the field ends the exam, and an applicant realizes that the ability to pretend nothing unusual is happening, is indeed part of the test, and the longer an applicant can endure the length and increasing difficulty of said test before "breaking", the better chance the applicant holds in actually being hired, and at a higher level. Everyone eventually breaks, because of the nature of the tests and tactics employed, however the longer one can endure, the better for the applicant. How long before I get in? Before it starts, before I begin? How long before you decide? Before I know what it feels like? Where to, where do I go? If you never try, then you'll never know. How long do I have to climb, Up on the side of this mountain of mine? How long before I get in? Before it starts, before I begin? So here we have Chris wondering how long until he finally gets in the agency, or "program", and officially becomes an employee of that agency, and "starts" and "begins" his work. How long before you decide? Before I know what it feels like? He wonders how long it's going to take for them to decide whether or not to hire him, and to finally "know what it feels like" to be an official Spy. Where to, where do I go? If you never try, then you'll never know. He is unsure as to where he is to "go" with his "answers" (meaning which solution, or answer to the particular test item at hand is the best or correct one, or which is the one they want him to choose). He realizes that he must try his best, or he will never know how it would be to be a Spy. How long do I have to climb, up on the side of this mountain of mine? He's in the middle of his test, and wonders how much longer he has to "climb this mountain", or "endure this test". Look up, I look up at night, Planets are moving at the speed of light. Climb up, up in the trees, every chance that you get, is a chance you seize. How long am I gonna stand, with my head stuck under the sand? I'll start before I can stop, before I see things the right way up. Look up, I look up at night, Planets are moving at the speed of light. In this stanza, Chris is gazing up at the night sky, in amazement of all the wonders and "unknowns", that exist in the Universe. He is aware that much is happening up there in the sky, that things are moving extremely quickly, and purposefully, (as things do in the clandestine world), although it does not appear anything is happening, or moving, at all (much as activity in the clandestine world is not seen). Climb up, up in the trees. This could mean positioning oneself in a location with a good vantage point, out of the view of others, when observing whatever, literally or figuratively, as any good spy is generally able to easily do. Every chance that you get, is a chance you seize, meaning when a spy finds any opportune time to best clandestinely observe someone(s), or to secure an object or information, it is crucial not to delay, as the opportunity may pass. How long am I gonna stand, with my head stuck under the sand? means he is wondering how long until "they" are going to allow his eyes to "open", to "see" what he was unable to "see" before he joined the agency, or program, things that are so secret that he would not be made aware of unless he passed the tests and was hired. In other words, how long will he have to remain "ignorant". I'll start before I can stop, before I see things the right way up. Here, he is stating that he is willing to start training immediately, even before he is enlightened and understands "everything" about how things in the world really work, how things really are, and what his life will look like, as a spy. That he will have faith that it will all be ok. All that noise, and all that sound, All those places I got found. And birds go flying at the speed of sound, to show you how it all began. Birds came flying from the underground, if you could see it then you'd understand. All that noise, and all that sound. Here, he is referring to all the sensory input (noise/sound) he has to take in and process while being tested. All those places I got found. That no matter where in the world he goes they always know where he is located, and continue to test him wherever that may be. The tests are incessant, which makes it all so stressful, and eventually leads to the person breaking down. But, as mentioned earlier, that is what happens to everyone, and when the person ends up in the psychiatric hospital, the candidate is able to be further evaluated, by the agency's own psychiatrist(s), and given written tests, to further evaluate and determine the applicant's suitability for the job. (Fyi, once the applicant leaves the hospital, if he/she is found to be desirable to hire, it is then that representatives from the "agency", or "program" formally approach the candidate, and debrief him/her about what all has been occurring over the length of time that the applicant was being "field tested/evaluated". Interestingly, if the applicant, upon leaving the hospital, is not found to be suitable for employment by this agency or program, the applicant is never formally approached, or debriefed, and left to believe that they were in a state of "psychosis" during the time period in which they were being tested, and that what the applicant "knew" to be occurring, did not, in reality, actually occur (but in fact of course, it did indeed occur). Not very ethical or humane, if you ask me. Anyway, back to my interpretation of these lyrics. Finally, the test has ended, and he is hired and debriefed! And birds go flying at the speed of sound, to show you how it all began. Birds came flying from the underground, if you could see it then you'd understand. Here, the "birds", are actually "missiles", some with nuclear warheads, some without nuclear warheads. The missiles are stored beneath the surface of the earth, and on the bottom of the ocean bed. If people could view one being deployed, then they would understand what he is really saying here. Ideas that you'll never find, all the inventors could never design. The buildings that you put up, Japan and China all lit up. The sign that I couldn't read, Or a light that I couldn't see. Some things you have to believe, But others are puzzles, puzzling me. Ideas that you'll never find. This means that concepts and plans are being made by this organization that no one outside of the agency will ever know about. All the inventors could never design. The inventors in the world, outside of the agency, could never design, or invent, the kind of devices, gadgets, and technological advances that the agency holds, because only the best of the best inventors would be smart or creative enough to invent and/or design such devices, gadgets, and technology, and all of them already work for the agency, so here it is implied that all the inventors in the world, or in a specific country, that do not work for the agency would, by default of not working for the agency, not be smart enough or creative enough to design the things the agency now holds. The buildings that you put up, Japan and China all lit up. The agency has so many employees and so many offices in every country in the world, that if you were to line the buildings with lights, you would light up Japan and China, and every other country in the world. The sign that I couldn't read, or a light that I couldn't see. Some things you have to believe. Things he could not see or understand while he was being "field tested", are now clear to him. And as unbelievable and far out as most of these things are to him, he has to believe they exist, because his eyes have been opened to see these secrets, by the agency, and he has seen it first hand, for himself. But others are puzzles, puzzling me. Even with his "eyes wide open", some things are so far out and so unbelievable, that he cannot figure them out, and they are still a mystery to him. All those signs, I knew what they meant. Some things you can invent. Some get made, and some get sent. All those signs, I knew what they meant. All the strange things he saw, all the comments strangers would say to him that he would encounter on the street, or wherever he was, during the time period when he was being "examined" in the field, he knew what they meant and what was going on, even though at that time he had to pretend he was clueless. He is now letting his examiners, bosses, and co-workers know that he indeed was acutely aware of what was really happening the whole time he was being tested. Some things you can invent. There are some situations that happened to him while being field tested that might seem to have not been possible for a human to arrange, or to make happen, or to invent, but here Chris is acknowledging that yes, even though he doesn't know how it was possible, he recognizes that it must have been possible, because these events did indeed occur. Some get made, and some get sent. Here however he is letting them know that not everything that happened during his field test was made by them to happen, that some things or "coincidences" we're so outlandish, that they could only have been sent by God, hence some got "sent". And birds go flying at the speed of sound, to show you how it all began. Birds came flying from the underground, if you could see it then you'd understand. Ah, when you see it then you'll understand. Again, here he is telling you about the missiles (birds), but this time he adds a very important sentence, which happens to be the last sentence in the song. Ah, when you see it then you'll understand. "When". He is letting the listeners know that WWIII is indeed coming, and when the TV Stations around the world broadcast and all the viewers see the "birds flying from the underground", when they see the flying missiles rushing out of their hiding places from under the ground and under the sea, they can cry out to God for help, but He will not listen to their cries for help. He will sit back, in sadness, and watch what will unfold, as people and governments were warned ahead of time that this was coming, yet the people in the world, and their governments, ignored God and did everything humanly possible to take His name out of every building, every school, and out of everyone's mouth. Galatians 6:7 King James Version: "Be not deceived. God is not mocked".
