Audacious rescue deals Farc a blow

In an operation of unprecedented audacity, the Colombian security forces have rescued 15 hostages from the hands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). The rescue operation that freed Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other Farc hostages was months in the planning and hinged on a turncoat high in the rebels' ranks.

Colombian authorities described it as "an unprecedented operation that will go down in history for its audacity and effectiveness".

The initiative has dealt a mortal blow to the left-wing guerrillas' plans to secure the release of hundreds of rebels in prison.

"Thank you to the army, from my country of Colombia, thank you for your impeccable operation," said Ingrid Betancourt, the most famous of the hostages in guerrilla hands, as she landed in the capital Bogota to be greeted by her mother and husband.

"The operation was perfect." Not a shot was fired by the Colombian security forces as they managed to free the most closely-protected hostages, guarded by the cream of Farc rebels.

:) my country is very happy about this... also France... we were together on this. Let's hope all the other hostages to be released soon.

66a.gif Thank you to the army, from my country of Colombia, thank you for your impeccable operation. The operation was perfect. This morning when I woke up, I prayed at four in the morning and put myself in the hands of God... I am Colombian, but I am also French. My heart is shared. I carry all of you in my heart. I thank all of you for your prayers. I thank you for the time you have devoted to me. I thank you for the fight that you have given in my defence, the protection and love that you have given to my children...

All Colombians who go to France know they're welcome because France shelters us, protects us, fights for us, and I know that with President (Nicolas) Sarkozy, with all French people, with all Europe, with the whole world that has supported us, we're going to keep fighting for the freedom of those who are still left behind... Do I still dream about serving Colombia? Yes. Of the presidency? Only God knows. Right now I just want to feel like another soldier, another Colombian soldier at the service of the motherland. That is my greatest happiness. Thank you. 99a.gif

I'll tell you why this was big news all around the world: FARC are one of the main terrorist groups in force in the world right now. They're responsible (in big part) for the great amount of internal refugees in my country right now. The main income for their organization is the illegal drug trade which obviously affects countries all over the world. (Ahem, Specially Europe and the U.S. where the demand is ridiculously huge) This has to include, definitely the Russian Federation.

The release of Ingrid and others hostages (including tree american) among many other huge blows they have had in the last few years thanks to mr. President Álvaro Uribe has weaken them terribly and hopefully we'll get rid of the freaking FARC shit anytime soon. The release of these hostages has made thm lose lots (if not all) of any political power they had before. They're not in the possition to demand anything right now.

And yes Aleja, we hope our country to be a better place soon. :)

that was really good news, and kinda emotional. we've been waiting for this for SO long. :)

it might be a small step against the FARC, but it's HUGE at the same time. and it can only get better. It was a well done operation !

I don't know where from every pound of drugs here, but I guess the lion's share of drugs here and in the Europe are receiving from Afghanistan

So, what about symbol of Red Cross, which was used in freedom operation? It was just a mistake or a part of "an unprecedented operation":dozey:

Nobody cares too much about the red cross thing... A soldier used it cause he was afraid and he did apologise. So did our president. The important thing is that they're all free and the FARC shit is gonna finish soon. :nice:

We the Colombians are going to march tomorrow and some people is also going to march in France too...

But that is a great mistake. It may bring freedom for 15 hostages but it may kill 150 hostages in the future...:dozey:

I remember the hostage-takers kill doctors and rescuers in a Beslan school in September 2004....:(

Of course this isn't good for the ICRC, its credibility and reputation as an impartial organization worldwide but I believe that in the last instance for a great purpose like this rescue it can be justified. Not even a single bullet was shot and some of this people have been captive for more than 10 years. Anyways... Our president took a huge risk with this and it was all worth it and as I wrote before, there was a public apology to the Red Cross Comitee.

I know the rescue in Beslan was so terrible, many children died... also the capture of a theater in Moscow many years ago... it makes me think... why can't people just get along and stop hurting others. :(
